Hmmm, what's the catalog number for the Anthem 12? I have Malfunction on two different 12's, one is an actually Malfunction 12 single with two other tracks called Manic and Techno Gangsters (62006-1) on Deconstruction, then it also appeared on the Mindflux EP, with Mindflux and two other tracks called Phoenix and Rhythm Zone (Deconstruction 62162-1). Just curious as to when it might have surfaced first. You people are all gonna give me head noogies for this, but ... Unfortunately, I won't be able to join you all for the love-in, oops, I mean the DEMF :-) The lure of a US $300 r/t ticket to Tokyo (yes, that's not a typo ... $300 ... Track ID
This is driving me nuts. I have a dub of Jeff Mills's set from _I Love Techno_ from last summer, and there's a track on there (near the beginning of his set, I think, although since the MP3 I have just jumps right in I have no real idea) I'd really like to identify. It sounds like it could be by Mills himself, but I don't think it is. It's tribal and trancy at the same time, with a totally wicked, harshly (and trebly) filtered tribal percussion line (sounds like the old Tronik House breakbeat) over the top. Plust it has that boom boom boomboomboom kick drum pattern that Mills seems to love so much. It sorta sounds like it could have been on Reload back in the day, but with more of that Mills feel. Any help would be totally appreciated (I know the description sucks, but hey, it's techno, what do you want/). Tracks like that really make me want to make music. Hell, if anyone has a track listing for that set and felt like sharing, that would be great. Mills is not the world's most technically proficient DJ, but his fucking up is more interesting than most other DJs' perfection. Plus he seems to be finding all the new records that fail to suck in the most intense possible way. ozy PS -- I sent out an e-mail on Mills' recent output a while ago, but I don't think it ever got through. I'll resend it following this. . . . the self-reflecting image of a narcotized mind . . . ozymandias G desiderata [EMAIL PROTECTED] desperate, deathless (415)558-9064http://www.aoaioxxysz.com/ ::AOAIOXXYSZ::

[ I sent this out a while ago, but either you all thought my obsessive trainspotting was too sad to merit comment or it didn't make it through to the list. -- ozy ] The recent mention of _The Art Of Connecting_ has me wondering what Mills is thinking these days. In addition to owning the majority of the Axis and Purpose Maker releases on 12, I own these CD compilations (duplicated tracks marked with exclamation points): o Waveform Transmissions vol 1 (Axis / Tresor / Pow Wow Trance, US) 1) Phase 4 2) Jerical 3) Changes Of Life 4) Berlin 5) The Hacker 6) Late Night ! 7) DNA 8) Man Like o Waveform Transmissions vol 3 (Axis / Tresor, US) 1) The Extremist 2) Solid Sleep 3) Life Cycle 4) Workers 5) Wrath Of The Punisher ! 6) DNA ! 7) Condor To Mallorca 8) Basic Human Design o The Other Day (Axis, Japanese) 1) Solarized ! 2) Gamma Player 3) Sleeping Giants 4) i9 5) Time Out Of Mind 6) Growth 7) Gateway of Zen 8) Medusa 9) Man From Tomorrow 10) Spider Formation 11) Childhood [Maria's Mix] 12) Humana 13) Inner Life (529) ! 14) Eclipse ! 15) Nepta 16) Mercury o Lifelike (Axis / Purpose Maker, French) 1) Yantra ! 2) Condor to Mallorca 3) Global Factor 4) Zenith ! 5) Nepta 6) Babylon 7) Minnia (The Queen's Theme) 8) Detached 9) Systematic 10) Cometh (only) 11) Solara 12) Avenger ! 13) Eclipse 14) With/Dove Stuff that's out there but that I don't have: o Purpose Maker Compilation 1) Dancer 2) Casa ! 3) Bells 4) Reverting 5) Alarms 6) Outsiders 7) Cubango 8) Medicine Man 9) Paradise 10) Masterplan 11) Fly Guy 12) Fuzz Dancer 13) Tango 14) Captivate o The Art of Connecting (Axis, Australia (others?)) 1) Deckard ! 2) Nepta ! 3) Gamma Player 4) 4 Art 5) Pacific State Of Mind 6) Cobolt ! 7) The Bells 8) Java 9) UFO 10) Utopia The thing that confuses me is the way that tracks from one of Mills' releases will pop up on another. What it looks like is that Mills is releasing a whole bunch of collections all over the place without really trying to avoid overlap. I don't get why he feels the need to have the overlap, because anyone who goes to the lengths necessary to find one of these releases (none of which, aside from the Waveform Transmissions records, are particularly easy to find) will try to find them all. Additionally, his albums are always admirably terse (no irony implied) so it's even weirder to have material duplicated from one release to another. I guess I'd be more inclined to buy another Mills album if I didn't already have a big chunk of that material. It's not like Mills doesn't have a huge backlog of unreleased stuff that's high quality -- all of the recent mixes I've heard by him have been filled with amazing stuff I've never heard anywhere else (although I'm only guessing it's by Mr. Mills). He's a puzzling guy. On an unrelated topic, thanks to all who said nice things about the _Mixed Up In The Hague_ compilation a while ago. I picked it up this weekend and it is indeed verrah nice. It's like a cleaner-sounding version of one of those great old Hot Mix tapes TeeP used to send me once upon a time. still alive, ozymandias . . . the self-reflecting image of a narcotized mind . . . ozymandias G desiderata [EMAIL PROTECTED] desperate, deathless (415)558-9064http://www.aoaioxxysz.com/ ::AOAIOXXYSZ::

Re: [313] I'm confused (was Re: (313) Jeff Mills - The Art of Connecting)
The recent mention of _The Art Of Connecting_ has me wondering what Mills is thinking these days. The thing that confuses me is the way that tracks from one of Mills' releases will pop up on another. He's a puzzling guy. I interviewed him recently and mean to really do a reworking of it as I wasn't happy with the way it was presented here, but I think what he is trying to do is present his material in different contexts, according to a theme. I always wondered why he called his albums compilations (eg The Other Day) and not albums, since that is in a sense downgrading them and, yes, that occurred to him also. I think the theme of The Art Of Connecting is how the Internet and new technologies have changed our perceptions of time and space, and I notice that it has been released in territories where the techno scene is relatively young or fresh - Australia, East Europe and, I think, Sweden. So maybe a secondary theme is how techno connects people from different corners of the world? The concept behind Lifelike is that he has selected the material that he feels best respresents his personality. So it's the conceptual aspect that has become the criteria for track selection. I think there is good justification for releasing what has already come out on vinyl on CD as, unlike the UK, in countries like Australia vinyl is very expensive, not to mention turntables, and it's mostly DJs who buy it. Sorry about the late reply to this - I have been sick with bronchitis for weeks and going to Oliver Ho didn't help (awesome DJ by the way, folks - plays deep, intelligent sexy techno!). Did you ever read the Mayday interview in Mixmag? It came out a few years ago. Anyway, he explained it in his usual eloquent manner there. I don't think he has a moral problem with drugs, it's more that it hurts him that people need drugs to feel the music when it should be their own souls and hearts that respond to it. What does it say about your music if people need drugs to feel it? It also pains him to see people self-destructing. I think that's it. what is derrick may's view of drugs? if i have heard it, i can't recall... peace, holly

If that was a crack on the fact that I haven't had any live acts out at the bar it's because I've only been approached by one live act to play [besides Nate Deyonker, I think, who will be performing] and they wanted money. There were always innovators, renegades, HMC was one of them, Voiteck another, and there are yet others, but the scene as a whole has come into its own in recent years, almost everyone in Melbourne would acknowledge that (the promoters, the DJs) - and I know most of them personally - and I think many of the Adelaide posse too, like Bundi. I think the techno scene here is in many ways ahead of other parts of the world now. Every territory develops differently, in some ways faster, others slower. Most of the internationals comment on the freshness of the Australian scene, and I have heard the same said of Eastern Europe (I myself am of Eastern European background, as is Voiteck), with Australians and Eastern Europeans being less jaded than some of the Brits/Western Europeans, and maybe that impressed people like Mills. At no point did anyone say we were regressive or that there was a non-existent scene at any stage. C

petit histoire... Jamaica was one of the few islands in the West Indies which was large enough for slaves who escaped from the plantations to hide from the British. Protected to some extent by the religeously non-racist indigenous people (before they were wiped out altogether), the Maroons (derived from spanish Cimmaron -meaning the wild/untammed) became a tribe who repeatedly resisted the British attacks. (hence Maroon -suburban knight) regarding nannytown by UR, this is a town in Jamaica where Grandy Nanny was supposed to have lived. Actually a great military strategist, this chieftaness of the Maroons has become something of a folk heroine to todays jamaicans. The most famous story about her concerns one of the many attacks upon the town, in which nanny was reported to have taken the cannons and gunshots of the British into her punani, and fired them back at the Britishif only I knew girls who could do that. The CD seems to have more suggestive track titles as well (dollis hill, zero is my country), So I was wondering if this album had a wavejumpers-style concept behind it. if anyone knows for certain, I would love to know Seth The Electric Press From: Counterforce - Lay [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Seth Redmond [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [313] interstellar fugitives Date: Wed, 24 May 2000 12:48:09 +0100 Haye! Haye! The CD seems to have more suggestive track titles as well (dollis hill, zero is my country), So I was wondering if this album had a wavejumpers-style concept behind it. *** Zero is my Country seems to be about the Z-gene that leads to Negative Evolution. Z is short for Zero in the ISF notes inside the cover. *** Your explanation about the Maroons fits right into those notes. *** But this album is full of simbolisms. Zero is My Country starts like a space trip, hence Interstellar Fugitives. Then you have Afrogermanic standing for the Detroit-Berlin connection and you get to hear a plane taking off (simbolizing the trip from Detroit to Berlin). A bit more ahead in the track you hear something like Only U.R. knows in a very distorted voice. *** In Mi Raza, what does the vocal say? I can only figure out something like Que passa la casa or maybe Que passa la raza?. Does anyone know? *** This seems like the works that Mike would do, full of hidden things and everything with it meaning. I *ADORE* this album inside and out, and I'd be willing to have a discution with anyone who wants to talk about these symbols in UR's ISF. RE: [313] RECORD RELEASE PARTY
As I said Gwendal; I'm not against the music you are promoting, totally not, but I guess you picked the wrong list to drop this message. This list is from Detroit, the city where techno and dance music originated, but these people never got the respect they deserve from their countrymen. It's a thorn in the eye of many artists in Detroit (and people everywhere) that the established music industry tries to promote acts like yours who are in fact more rock oriented (at least what image and all is concerned) while that same industry doesn't give a sh*t about the artists who are the real innovators. You are bound to get negative reactions on a list like 313 that is mainly for Detroit techno-minded people. Sorry for lashing out, but please try to include some 'native' artists on the next record release party. And I'm not talking about Moby! Hopes this clears things out a little, John Hmm, could someone back me up on this? -Original Message- From: Gwendal Cobert [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, May 24, 2000 3:27 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] RECORD RELEASE PARTY oh oh... Gwendal It's a record store trying to generate sales of pulply, commericalized dreck on the back of what was a legitimaite, genuine, spontaneous combustion of human endeavor. Disgusting. Of course there will always be commerical minded people trying to make a buck of someone eleses integrity, but it just sucks when it's so blatant. It's even more disheartening when it shows up on the 313 list. It's like someone showing up at an oasis surrounded by thirsty travellers and that one idiot taking a piss in the pond. The important thing to note about that message is that it only says Live Dj's. There's no mention of who they actually are as I assume no one with any credibility would attach their name to such a crass Wal-Mart-like event. Wow, did I ever wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

OK then - distinctions between techno genres etc are quite fuzzy to me, though I'm afraid that without people like Andrew Weatherall (who you probably rank with Oakenfold and Slim) I would still be listening to Aerosmith and REM, and knowing nothing about Juan Atkins... What puzzles me is the fact that you say Trance is a no-no on this list - last week there was a thread about Acid Trance ? or is there some clear genre distinction between the two ? for now I'm completely lost between the numerous genres and subgenres Gwendal -Original Message- From: FC3 Richards [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, May 24, 2000 3:49 PM To: 'Gwendal Cobert' Subject: RE: [313] RECORD RELEASE PARTY it is the fact that we are on a detroit techno and detroit music mailing list. Well, me personally, I always thought it sounded like a tribute to D May's Strings Of Life. But then again, I could be wrong. Cheers C sorry to post about Jeff Mills ... ;-) but I recently discovered him and his CD comps, and found that Changes of Life seems completely different from the rest - is it because I am missing an important part of his discog ? does this particular track relates to some specific part of his career ?

Zero is My Country starts like a space trip, hence Interstellar Fugitives. Re: [313] DEMF/Hart Plaza Layout?
Hey, does anyone know of an online map with the specific layout for Hart Plaza? A friend and I are trying to agree on a good meeting spot... There is a fountain in the middle though, right? Maybe we'll just meet there... no map, but there's a pretty good photo at http://www.ci.detroit.mi.us/photobook/hartplaza1.htm in the photo, you are facing north, the river is to your back (as well as one of the built-in ampitheaters) the floating donut fountain is definately a good place to meet someone - or the oblelisk. kbk Can't believe I'm going to miss the entire first day's lineup plus the fabulous afterparties, but my stupid best friend decided to pick the Saturday before Memorial Day weekend to get married in Grand Rapids. Please don't tell me what I've missed... ; .John. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I also work for an afterhours club so I've experienced her campaign head on. Just an example of the type of person we're dealing with here: a) The owner of the club made numerous calls to her office in an effort to discuss her views and the club with her. Not only did she refuse to speak to him, her secretary flat out REFUSED TO TAKE A MESSAGE. Very professional. b)The owner decided to go to the office of the rave task force Ms. Pupatello set up. A MEMBER of the task force (supposedly made up of local government officials, school principles, etc.) said: We don't have a problem with people dancing. It's the MUSIC you play. It makes kids want to do drugs and has (get ready) SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES in it. These are the people we've elected to run our country...god help us. In a message dated 5/24/00 1:24:03 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: AO, what have you got to say about old industrial stuff from way back when? I used to love industrial. Every summer in the mid-80's during the big Chicago Comicon (this was when I was a comic artist), we'd drive out to the old Wax Trax record shop in Chicago to get the new industrial wax. I was into Ministry, Front 242, Revolting Cocks, all of the Jourgensen/Barker side projects (Lead Into Gold, 1000 Homo DJs, etc.) My radio station got sent all the Wax Trax stuff too, so I kept up with all of it. Nettwerk was big with me too, with Skinny Puppy, Severed Heads and Moev (their first album). I interviewed Severed Heads. Nerds ! I used to play Single Gun Theory every week on my show, that was a fave. Those Stephen R. Gilmore album covers ! Every so often, I'd find the original European/Australian label copies of most of this stuff in different record shops. It was exciting because the track listings and art differed from territory to territory. For instance, the Red Rhino version of Front 242's Official Version was different from the Wax Trax pressing, which was different from the final Sony repress. Now with the EU and FedEx/DHL/UPS, and the advent of CDs all records are the same, everywhere. And with the Net, you can find anything. Aside: Does anyone have a copy of Baby Ford Ford Trax 2x12 on Rhythm King they wanna sell me ? I was a big fan of Factory, too, they were known for that. There are like a zillion different versions of Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division. I still have Section 25 Looking From a Hilltop (UK pressing), woefully out-of-print. A Certain Ratio's back catalogue was repressed a few years back by the late Creation label though. Front 242 was the direct influence for Underground Resistance. I was the opening DJ when they came to St. Andrews on their Front by Front tour, and Mills was there. They were straight-up terroriSoon after, Riot EP. Anybody remember Code Industry, the Black industrialists from Detroit who were on Antler-Subway back in '90 ? Well, before that, they were Code Assault, and they were on my label, Technika. That's how they got that deal. It was the first time I got fucked over in the music business, but not the last. Jeff did a b-side industrial remix on them for me that was the shit in its day. I haven't listened to it in ages. Blah Blah Blah. Alan

Kevin Michael Robbins,[EMAIL PROTECTED],internet writes: There's a dope rave called demf. I think Oakenfold and Sasha are headlining. See ya there. I heard Pete Tong was going to be riding around Hart Plaza on a tricycle, 45s stapled to his forehead, mouthing the words to Last night a DJ saved my Life and begging for loose change. Should be interesting.
RE: [313] industrial
Section 25's Looking From The Hilltops still a fav of mine. I don't think they're out on LP, but all the Section 25 albums have been reissued on CD with bonus tracks. The reissue of From The Hip has two remixes of Looking from a Hilltop plus six mixes of other songs. .John.

Re: [313] RECORD RELEASE PARTY
What is it with all you people pissing and moaning? Music is music in the eye of the beholder. I personally don't enjoy this type of music, but I don't criticize others for their chioce. Leave Gwen be and continue on with your narrow mindset...last time I checked this is a semi-free country we live in. Peace. d
DEMF problem solving
this is a time and geographically based email about getting to the DEMF for those who want to skip it I am going down to the DEMF after a weird last minute scheduling allowed for it, unfortunately I HAVE to be in Toronto very first thing(7 am) in the morning on Monday the 29th, so I miss that entire daythis sucks but between the first 2 days and the after parties, I'll see and hear more than enough real music to keep me happy for a long while . My problem lies in that the last train leaves at 5:30 on Sunday back to TO. This means I'd have to miss the dopest section of the event for me; the electro madness with Adult, Assault, ectomorph, etc. I REALLY REALLY would love to figure out some way to pull off staying to the end of the event on Sunday...does anybody from the windsor/detroit or Toronto area know anything about late night buses making the trip past or close to midnight? I'm thinking all the hard core gamblers might want to go till the last minute on the weekend or something. Any help would be appreciated. See you all soon! -jason GMOrecords http://www.genmod.org [EMAIL PROTECTED]
