since nitzer ebb got play on hawtin's mix cd, they've getting more
attention and Mute is going to be doing some reissues soon.
not sure what just yet but i bet they're be some new remixes
popping up.
kuri
On last week's show (Equinox), I mixed in 12 remix of 242's Tyranny For
You, on top of Mills Circus, and it actually sounded pretty good. This
week I dug out the instrumental version of Murderous by Nitzer Ebb
(check it out @ 42mins in)
 http://www.theiceberg.com/cgi-bin/1groove/playshow.cgi?equinox

First 242 concert: In support of Official Version late 80's at small
basement club called Nut's Bolt's. They had their industrial wasteland
set up - all their electronic gear + various metallic objects; including
a 6'x6' sheet of metal hanging from the low ceiling which Richard 23
would turn around and start wailing on with whatever he could get his
hands on. They also had an oil drum flipped upside down, which was used
for additional percussion + the grand finale - the old grinder into the
 side shooting sparks everywhere.

 Cheers,

 Gerald.

Couple 'o things:
1. I was told Isotope 217 and Laurent are
definitely off the bill. I do not know why. i
would like to know why jeff mills is not on the
lineup. i hope he just shows up somewhere.

2. The Orb was my real introduction to techno
music ('91's the orb's adventure's beyond the
ultraworld) as far as taking it to another level
–– and the first time i heard it, i did not
understand why there was so much talking,
samples, spaceships, etc.., i cringe everytime i
read my cd review i wrote while working at my
college newspaper . . . but i digress.
I would cite Depeche Mode as my earliest
influence, only because it was the first band
that truly got me interested in electronic
sounds, textures, etc. in music. the mid-'80s
stuff is what i got into, though it was after the
fact.
And i went from being a pseudo-metalhead to
loving depeche mode. as one might expect, my
friends at the time didn't really understand. i
made new friends soon after...
but i also was into a lot of wax trax and related
stuff including 242, front line assembly,
ministry, meat beat manifesto (who i think is
sorely underrated), PTP, acid horse, revolting
cocks, even NIN.
hell, i always thought the KLF were pretty good
cheeky fun.
K-L-F!!! uh-huh, uh-huh.

see ya'll this weekend.

i have a tape from a couple of years ago that was recorded at tribal
gathering. the first half is DJ Sneak spinning some really good tribal
techno. the second half is Kraftwerk performing live. i must say that
the live performance by them is way bettr then listening to them on CD.
it was recorded live off the radio. when they get introduced, it isn't as
kraftwerk, it was as the Men Machine. is this a way of them trying to
trick us, or do they just use that as a way to have themselves introduced?
anyway...if anyone can find a copy of this tape i highly suggest picking
up a copy. i don't know if it is just a bootleg or an actual mix tape
release. i just know somebody copied it for me and it fawkin rocks.

i am somewhere in between industrial and finding a suprise in the record
store. i was at a Harmony House in Flint (the one on miller road if anyone
cares) looking through thier industrial and electronic music CD's. that is
where i stumbled up a cd called Detroit: Beyond the Third Wave...it kinda
captured my attention with the artwork and the subject matter. and besides
that it was out on Asterlwerks, fatboy Slims label. so i figured it had to
be good since Fatboy Slim is s damn popular (this was when going out of
my mind was getting steady play on 120minutes and Amp) i read the back were
it proceded to talk about detroit techno. i was like i wonder what this is
like and i bought it. one of the best CD's i have ever bought. i
learned alot from that CD. I still have a copy. and i am looking for a
copy on vinyl. The Claude Young, K-Hand, Stacy Pullen, and Shake tracks are
pure genius. it is one of the few CD's that i have that can manage to
capture my attention and imagination still after all the times i have
listened to it. i wish i had brought a copy with me...this boat ride is
boring. oh, and there are a couple members from this list on it: T-1000
(AO, who also did the art work) and Sean Deason. great stuff guys...

by the extent of love for industrial 313 has. Industrial was what made me
take so long to come around to loving this musicTo me, it's everything
detroit isn't; angsty, soulless, and whiny, plus the sounds stink. the funk
just ain't there. It seems some of the biggest detroit names love(d) it so
I'm obviously not correct on this, but industrial and trance are the only

I don't see how anybody, fan or producer, can come into techno via hip-hop.

There's at least one comp on vinyl; Nu groove the compilation out of Nu
groove Italy (???). Not sure what the exact title was. I think Elbee Bad was
on it... True story of house music. That single is also easy to get: There
was/is some copies circulating in the specialized shops (Hardwax, Sonic

Another vinyl comp from '90 / '91 I remember was from Network. There's a

There were also 2 Network CD compilations of Nu Groove stuff, but... Good

Try Sonic Groove, they still have a good number of Nu Groove releases. At

like to share it with you. This will be the numer 1 site today that
deals with the music and lifestyle we have all grown to love.
Unlike all other dj communitys we specialize in electronic dancemusic in

all it's shapes and forms. May it be hip hop (hey they use samples),
house, techno or drum bass.

At the first beta launch July 1st, the content will be;

1. The DJ database.
Add your DJ info so that you can be found by the promoters out
there. Upload a picture and audiofile. You can log in at a later time
and change your info as it changes.

2. The Live act/artist database.
Add your artist info so that you can be found by the promoters and
labels out there. Upload a picture and audiofile. You can log in at a
later time and
change your info as it changes.

3. Add a party date.
The promoters out there can add info about their upcoming partys and
the visitors can search for them.

4. Add a party review.
Have you been to a great party/club? Wan't to tell the rest of the
world about it? This is the place to be.

5. Add a new record release.
Registered recordlabels can add info about their upcoming releases.
Visitors can then search the base to find the info they need to get
out to the store in get'em.

6. Add a recordreview.
Have you just bought a great record? Why not tell the rest of the
world about it?

7. Add your top 10 chart.

Next to the main sections above you can read som interesting articles by

some of the best known names in the bizz, chat we people who love the
music as
much as you do, discuss in the message board and much more.

---

We are also looking for distributors, vinyl and cd manufacturers in the
USA, clothes manufacturers (club and street), recordlabels,
clubpromoters,
clubowners, dj equipment stores and much more to partner up with.
Do you do anything of this or know anyone who does it, please send us
the contact info.

Do you want to join as a contributor/editor and help writing interesting

articles? Just drop us a mail.

This was all from me at this point. If you want to receive updates on

learned alot from that CD. I still have a copy. and i am looking for a
copy on vinyl. The Claude Young, K-Hand, Stacy Pullen, and Shake tracks are
 pure genius.

I have tried and tried to get it on vinyl and have been told that it isn't
available on vinyl and that it wasn't even pressed.

I want that damned excellent K.Hand track on vinyl.

I still can't figure out the end of the sample.
'come on now baby ...?can't u see that i..?

Shouldn't matter what it's saying but for years i've been curious.

I really like this, can we have a seven degreees of Techno game? I choose
Punk Hardcore. I was in Germany at a giant open air fest called Strange
Noise in the Black Forest in Germany to see a couple Hardcore bands
(Snapcase and Rikers I believe) The first night was a big silly rave party.
I know quite a few kids in Detroit who were into punk throughout their teens
and suddenly got into techno. None of us liked ravers though. I think it
had something to do with the beats. Don't forget that Motor used to be the
Falcon Club, one of my favorite places to be during high school. And theres
a semi-fabled history at St. Andrews for both music forms. The more I think
about it the more similarities pop up.

BTW: the track on Interstellar Fugitives, 'Something Happened on Dollis

Here is the Essay on Alan Oldham for those of you who don't have access to
the Web.

Uninvited: An Essay by Alan Oldham
A lot of people have asked/e-mailed me if I'm playing the DEMF, so I'm
announcing here that I am not. I was not invited to perform at this event. I
got a very odd phone call from Mr. Craig (I didn't know he even had my phone
number) telling me that there would always be next year's event, and pointing
out that he wasn't playing himself. You can't really argue with that point. I
was somewhat mollified by this, until I saw the full line-up, released two
days after I spoke with him. Taking nothing away from the talent that ended
up filling the open slots, I think I've contributed more to the Detroit
legend here in our own city than many of the names that I saw on the talent
list.

I forget exactly how I met Carl Craig. I do remember when he, in 1988, came
over to my grandmother's house to let me hear some halting guitar stuff that
he'd eked together on his music teacher's four-track recorder at school, in a
bid to get me to play it on the radio. He was trying to sound like 4AD. This
is even before he'd hooked up with Derrick May. Far from a Techno Legend,
just a kid with a borrowed four-track. On my radio show, Fast Forward, I
supported his first releases (recorded on Derrick's gear at his Techno
Boulevard loft while he was out of the country) as Psyche and BFC on
Transmat. I still love those records and even played Crack- down out until
recently. I did some art for one of his Retroactive records, I forget which
one. A year after that, in 1991, I was the very first to play a strange white
label he'd given me: 4 Jazz/Funk Classics by 69, the first Planet E
release. At that time, he didn't want anybody to know it was him.

Similarly, I was not invited to attend the 430 West Ten Year Anniversary
luncheon, taking place during the same Memorial Day weekend as DEMF. I didn't
even know about it until a local ghettotech DJ, Disco D, told me. It seems he
was invited. I was very hurt by this oversight even more than the DEMF snub
mainly because I consider the Burden Brothers friends. I have played and
supported their records from the beginning (well, the 430 stuff, not the
Direct Beat records). They don't live far from me here in Northwest Detroit.
I was over at their house a couple of months ago ! We shared the same
distributor up until recently. I valued their insights into the business and
our long conversations about music.

I have known the Burden Brothers since before they stumbled ass-backwards
(via their friendship with Anthony Shakir) into being included on the
Virgin/10 compilation Techno 2: The Next Generation (1989). They didn't
know anybody in the scene besides Shake. The only reason I even knew them at
all was because they lived two doors down from this chick I hung out with
back in the late 80s named Karen Fox (she helped me do the original label art
for K. Alexi Shelby's All for Leesah record on Transmat). Marc Kinchen's
track Love Take Me Over as Area 10 was the big choice off that compilation
to the succeed Inner City's smash hit single Big Fun off the previous,
landmark Techno : The New Dance Sound of Detroit record (Virgin/10. 1988),
but Octave One's I Believe turned out to be the real hit. Derrick May
himself brought the reel-to-reel down to WDET for me to play it before it was
even pressed (this was the episode where Derrick went nuts on-air during our
interview and I kicked him out of the studio; anybody got a tape of that show
?). Thanks to its lyrics, it became a big local hit thanks to my show,
getting many phone requests every week, selling records at Record Time and
putting the Burdens on the map, much to the chagrin of May, who never even
liked the track even though it sounded like something that he would have made
himself. The only reason I Believe was even included on the comp was
because Neil Rushton of Network/Kool Kat personally liked it, even to the
point of releasing it as a single in the UK. The Burdens then spent the next
few years hounding Transmat for their money. (For the record, my involvement
with the Techno 2 comp, besides playing it on WDET, was that I did the
album cover art, which was rejected by Virgin). They went on to form 430 West
around '91, releasing hits from Jay Denham as Vice and Eddie Flashin
Fowlkes, both of which I supported. Their mix of Jaguar is the one I play
out !

I am fully booked for Memorial Day weekend, as you can see by the calendar of
events, and have been since February at least. Would have been nice to have
been asked to participate in my own hometown festivities, though. This is
where having a global profile, as opposed to strictly local, comes in handy.

This was fun ! I'm gonna have to write a book. I've got dirt on everybody. If
the above is any indication, it will be the anti-Techno Rebels. Slash and
burn politics. Hey, Tim Barr, wanna help write it ?

Saturday 8th July

Derrick May
Kevin Saunderson presents E-Dancer (Live)
DJ Rolando
DJ Sneak
Gene Farris
Roger Sanchez Junior Sanchez (not for me but who I am)
This i'm sure is DJ Sneak Gene Farris vs Sanchez Sanchez
Funk D'Void (Live
There's also Tom Middleton on this day.

Sunday 9th July

Slam
Carl Cox Jim Masters
The same ad that i've seen shows it as Slam vs Carl Cox Jim Masters
Andrew Weatherall
Darren Emerson
James Lavelle
Universal Principles
+ some other I can't remember
Death In Vegas Live (+ Special Guests T.B.C.), perhaps ;)
Saturday is the one for me, strong D line-up might compensate for my being
unable to get to the
DEMF. Those of you going have the top weekend that the occasion deserves and
get back on list
next week with every detail of the weekend for those less fortunate that
yourselves!!

Peace Respect,
Niall.
I dunno how it's gonna be worked out, but it'd be nice to see Derrick vs
Rolando perhaps.

Dave Clarke was a hip-hop DJ before he turned to all things techno, and
that'd definately explain his wikkid turntablesque skills of late.

Autechre have also cited hip hop as their earliest influence, esp. Mantronix
and the Mantronik produced Just Ice album. Title of this one escapes me. Was
it Back To the Old School? One of my adolescence hallmarks (among others
;) ), listening to that stuff...
