Chain Reaction Kru
I don't know, for the life of me, how anyone cannot comprehend the beauty and brilliance of Chain Reaction/BC et al (Scion w/ Tikiman at the DEMF). Of course, I understand not everyone will like the same things and they're entitled to their opinions but... I've been watching/listening to the archived performance for some time now and am floored as usual. I still can't believe this stuff comes from "ordinary" human beings (which I suppose makes them extraordinary). Brilliant music that celebrates everything I find fragile, beautiful, and truly important in life, this world, and beyond... Ryan Heard [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I think this is pretty disturbing party. Very enigmatic stuff. Some of these kids are playing live for the first time, and some of them might be >really fantastic. >To me it seems like a fucking awesome idea that's gotten into the wrong >hands. well, i know the promoter pretty well, and one of the reasons that he was attempting an all live-pa event was because most of the guys on his label, emp records, play out live all the time. he decided that there were prolly a lot of up-and-coming producers that deserved a chance, and started working on the concept of an all live pa event. different concept, could work - or it couldn't. What made the promoters of this turn it into candy rave massive? Are all >these tweaked out highschoolers even going to care that something like >this has neer been pulled off in detroit history? they're promoting this event just like they promote all of their other events. "gotta catch 'em all" or "jiggly puff" didn't come to the lists' attention because they were exactly that - candy raver parties. he wanted to do something different and in a legal venue, hence st. andy's, esp because of all of the gear that will be there. his production on the night should be alright, and he does actually give a shit about the kids. adding kevin and juan to the lineup was kinda an afterthought to the live concept, to appeal to a broader and possibly older crowd that would like to see kevin and juan, but not at a dirty illegal rave. to tell the truth, if it was at an illegal venue i don't think he would have put kevin and juan on the bill, but going into a legal venue cuts out part of the crowd and therefore he needed to draw in a different segment of the crowd. as for juan showing up, they had lunch yesterday and juan is paid up and has said that he has every intention of being there. we'll see what happens with flights the day of, though. i'll swing through and check it out, i don't know if they're planning on recording the sets. g mailing list http://www.onelist.com/community/detroitscience science office 313-534-7420 science fax 313-534-5155 mobile 313-790-7300 pager 800-200-5176 www.detroitscience.com Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Re: [313] Richie Rich
I felt exactly the same way when he played for four hours in Iowa City. Unfortunately I missed him @ DEMF, although I guess I didn't miss much??? I posted this about Adam Beyer after seeing T1000 and Hawtin here, but it's mostly about Hawtin: >>> this whole discussion reminds me of how I felt about Hawtin and DJ-T1000 when I saw them in Iowa City on separate occasions this spring. I haven't heard Beyer spin, but hear he's very good. However, if it's anything like Hawtin (who is undeniably a technical master), I think I would have the same longing for some kind of melody and drum loops that last more than a bar. As I understand it, this is typical of the European techno DJing style. I don't even feel motivated to dance once the drone sets in. Since seeing Alan spin, I've read his posts with a sense of awe, in that he tends to be the designated advocate for beating techno sets, but his performance here was as funky as any I've heard (I think he clarifies his feelings on this below). He plays music with a funk core, but still tends to have aggressive beats. I did not get the same feeling from Hawtin at all. While I can marvel at what he doing with the raw materials, I don't particularly care for them. Seeing him spin was very cerebral for me, but I don't suspect this would be true for a non-DJ, or someone who doesn't know what it takes to create flawlessly at that speed. I think I have a pretty unusual feeling about this, because it's not often that beats will make me dance. I have to be into the music on some mental level before my body will respond. However, I have a purely artistic interest in watching and listening to someone beat records I don't care for, and tend to enjoy this without dancing. Seth: Silver Apples were/are incredible. I haven't been able to find much (any) of their new stuff, but Brave New Waves covered them as a featured band back in April or March. Check the BNW website (http://www.radio.cbc.ca/programs/bnw/bnw.html) and tune in M-F 12:10-4AM for rather innarestin' and experimental muzak. sorry to digress, detroit. your righteous simian brother, rxdx > Sorry about this, way off topic, but if we can talk about Genesis P-orridge > then I reckon I can squeeze this in: > > Does anyone know anything about the new Silver Apples material which was has > apparently been coming out for about a year? I wasn't into richie's set either. He played in total 3 tracks that got my head bobbin' and they were songs that I've heard many times...vainquer, 69 and vapourspace. I thought out of respect they would let dmay play last. The crowd was into it nontheless, but I think richie would have impressed me and others more if he played music with melodies and deeper songs that were more than just 2 bar loops which he pretty much played. Taking nothing away from richie, I've heard rich play great house music for 3 hours with unreal acid tracks and techno by armando, mike dunn and phuture. listen to some of those archives...people like shake, theo parrish, buzz goree, and fannon flowers played more interesting sets. minto

Richie Rich
Okay, I was hoping somebody would have brought this up already so that I wouldnt have to- but as nobody has really tackled it, and I think it needs some attention: Was anyone else disappointed with mr hawtins set to close the demf? I cant speak on the entire performance because I left after the first hour out of boredom, but that was some of the most boring 4ontheFloor 909 stuff I've heard in a while. I dont remember a single bassline in any of the tracks. Most of the synth stuff from the vinyl got buried under the 909 kick/snare/hihat/ride -which i believe someone did mention briefly as perhaps a fault of the sound engineer. The builds and snare rolls were cheesy and formulated crowd pleasers and I think even the crowd was getting bored of them after the first five or six. Now I hate badmouthing mr hawtin, as i have heard and seen him do plenty of great things for the music community, and I have enjoyed a handful of his sets via detroit parties around '94-95. It was even quite impressive watching him juggle all his stuff at demf and do 909 programming on the fly, but the outcome just seemed pretty boring. Not even any of those trademark plastikman funky rimshot rhythms. just kick,snare,hihat,ride- w/ very little variety in the different beats. Perhaps I am missing something conceptually behind this 'cause I dont really know anything about his ideas for doing the decks/efx/909 thing, and I may be overlooking some fundamental part to this stuff- I've never been too into the bangin' 4ontheFloor stuff as much anyways- so perhaps I'm not the best critic of it. I think just after hearing a lot of great music from derrick w/ plenty of soul and tribally rhythm stuff going on, the 909 just couldn't follow it up for me. comments please... -p
Re: Industrial
Just a quick post 'cos I'm jet-lagged and have to go meet a friend: Why am I not surprised at Alan and Sean dropping all those names? Jesus, you two motherfuckers are too cool. I almost want to go find my Section 25 records and my Code Industry CD :-) (Where's that C.I. Mills remix, Alan?!?) Someone asked what Steven R. Gilmore is up to nowadays. He lives in L.A., up in the Hollywood hills. I saw him last year at a Ninja Tune gig here. Someone else mentioned busting out an old Skinny Puppy tape, and said "Good luck finding a place for it in a Techno set". Well, try the "Download III" album, plenty of Techno flava on that one. Fantastic record. (What's the Puppy-Detroit Kevin Bacon factor? Well, cEvin Key is gonna try and have the Chain Reaction guys mix his next solo album, if that counts. And, um, I introduced him to Richie Hawtin back in February ... hehe) Someone else mentioned Coil. They're playing live at Sonar. 'Nuff said. One last Detroit/Industrial mention: Ironically enough, I'm listening to the new(ish) Speedy J album, "A Shocking Hobby". Lotsa Industrial noises on this one, that's for sure :-) It rules! I haven't gotten to the Digests from the DEMF/post-DEMF period yet. Expect to hear lots of Homer Simpson-esque "[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]" screams from LA when I do. :-) Now back to this mountain of new Japanese pr0n ... (j/k) - Greg P.S. I got a couple of pictures of me in front of the Liquid Room, at least! (Will put them up when I figure out how to suck them out of my new Nikon)

Pooley's Quiet Daze?
Someone mentioned a digest or two ago that Quiet Daze is Ian Pooley. I'm a little shocked by this: the 'November' track on the Time:Space compilation is probably my favourite, but Ian Pooley?... Kind of goes to show how much opinions (well, mine at least) are swayed by knowledge of who the artist is, because I'm sure if I knew 'November' was by Pooley I wouldn't have liked it so much. I know the thing to do is judge the music on it's own merits, but I'm being honest: it's hard not to be influenced by all the stuff external to the track: the artist, the label, the artwork, etc. All this stuff sets up expectations before the music kicks in. And I guess Ian Pooley has produced a track or two that stands up. Cheers Rol Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Re: [313] Beyer's homage to D
The Beyer's homage to the D, on Svek was lackluster prodection in my opinion. Sure he threw in some chords, but the EP was just average overall. A quote from a customer in the record store "this sounds like 20 other records I have, so I'll pass on this one." Lido Hotel is a very good album, not the album of the year though. I vote for either Christian Morganstern's Lydia ep (this record hasn't left my box) or the extremely slept on Terreance Dixon on Tresor, a very good album that I never hear anyone talk about. RE: [313] WARNING!!! Lost my money...
I must say that I had no problems at all with Mark & Johanna, I went to visit them and see the collection for myself (probably one of the best Detroit techno collections in the UK when it was in its entirety...) I had a great time chatting to Mark who is extremely knowledgeable on the subject, I also proceeded to buy £685 worth of the collection... I am sure that any problems / delays are down to the shear volume of emails and calls they received from people wanting to buy some of these amazing records + the fact that they were about to move house... Re: dis poem... again?
Man I don't know, I never picked up that copy, being that there is only one record store in New Orleans and that most of the stuff I pick up is mail-order I have missed certain things. So I could not say, cause I never had the pleasure of listening to that one, It might be though cause this EP is 4 vinyl pieces with all kinds of stuff, all spoken word...Dispoem is listed under Joe Claussel and Matabaruka no catalog number though, sorry. On the Boo Williams - Trackmode, he sampled a pretty hefty obvious chunk of Kraftwerk on the track entitled Spicy, man that record is sweet.

It sent chills up my spine reading all those reports describing all the sensations, seeing the pictures you toughtfully put online, now I'm working on hearing the audio (this connection's way too slow for streaming :-( ) It was definitly the next best thing from being there. *** I guess I'll be joining that large "we'll-catch-it-next-year" team. I only left this country twice, the first one to see UR in London, the second for going to the land of my parents. vinyl warping
Seth Redmond wrote: nevertheless I'm interested if anyone knows the reason behind the generally low quality of vinyl coming out of detroit. I know oil prices are rising and I don't expect virgin vinyl all the time, but I rarely buy an NSC record which isn't at least slightly warped these days. It seems to be a particular problem to Detroit as I've not had the same problems with European labels. Yeah, that's some curse that's been buggin some U.S. vinyls for ages. For some time it was obvious to expect U.S. vinyl to sound shitty, it had a "cheap"-feeling to it, making it more "underground" (as ridiculous as it seems). I've wondered about the differences between vinyl-pressers. Apparently United Record Pressing, that Submerge / UR use, has a better QC. Detroit's native pressing-plant Archer on the other hand... Who knows? I think it is a question of bad luck: some percentage of the pressing amount is warped and some is not. Like BC for example: I think the first pressings of those vinyls were OK, but later they were quite shitty quality. List goes on and on... Sorry about this, way off topic, but if we can talk about Genesis P-orridge then I reckon I can squeeze this in: Does anyone know anything about the new Silver Apples material which was has apparently been coming out for about a year? I had heard rumours that they were going to be working with DJ Hell and a few other notables (which may add some much-needed balls to their work). PLURkids Obscured - Tonight - DIRECTIONS
Hi all, Ok this is basically the info as it will appear on the infoline, so PKU'ers don't need to call it at all :) PLURkids Obscured is at a new (yeah, as in VIRGIN) space. The best part is that it is SAFE. Basically, it is what we always dreamed of having and never did, with a huge paved secure parking lot big enough to hold every car that might come, clean bathrooms with running water, and room for literally 3000 or more people to dance all night. Think Fathom, only bigger and with safer parking. Please respect the space, or no one will ever get to use it again - the owner was really difficult to say the least. All people attending this party will have to go through a map point. There will be two map points to choose from - Tron Records on Woodward Ave in Ferndale, and a gaming store called "The Only Game in Town" two doors up from Detroit Threads on Jos Campau in Hamtramck. ALL PEOPLE ON THE GUESTLIST AND BIRTHDAY PEOPLE MUST GO TO THE HAMTRAMCK LOCATION. THAT LOCATION WILL BE THE ONLY LOCATION WITH FREE TICKETS AVAILABLE. We'd like to encourage people to go to the Hamtramck location as their primary choice, so if you are undecided or don't care then go to that spot. Both map points will open at 8:30pm, doors to the space will open at 9pm. *NOTE: There will be no entry onto the premises of the space without your ticket, and to get past the guard shack to park you will have to have tickets ready to show the guards. Directions to the map points are as follows: PRIMARY MAP POINT: "THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN", HAMTRAMCK - If you know how to get to Motor or Detroit Threads, you can easily find this place. From the NORTH: take I-75 South to the Caniff exit. Go left across the freeway and travel east about a mile to Joseph Campau. Turn right and go about 4 blocks. Look on your left hand side for The Only Game In Town. The address is 10034 Joseph Campau. It is two doors north of Detroit Threads. From CANADA: 375 is closed right now, so you will probably have to go north on the Lodge (10) to Davison Ave East to I-75 South. Caniff will be your first exit, so just stay in the right lane and then follow directions as above. SECONDARY MAP POINT: TRON RECORDS, FERNDALE -- From all points, find your way to I-696 and Woodward Avenue (between I-75 and the Lodge Fwy). Go south on Woodward Ave and Tron Records is about 1/4 mile up on your right, between the freeway and 9 mile. I think 696 is open now, so there should be no problem with getting there, but just in case, from the west you can take 696 to 10 (Lodge) South to the 10Mile/Evergreen rd exit, then go left (east) and it will turn into the service drive for 696 just before Woodward ave. Turn right onto Woodward and Tron is about 1/4 mile up on your right, between the freeway and 9 mile. Map points open at 8:30 pm, doors at the space at 9pm. From 8:30pm until 12 midnight, you will be able to purchase tickets for $25. After midnight, the price will be $30. The first of the headliners is on by then, so come early and groove with us. Birthday people with photo id are in free, and out of state (including Canada) get in for the presale price of $20. All headliners are confirmed and most of them have arrived already. They all tell me they can't wait to play on the 4-corner Turbosound rig, now increased to 54 bins. Once again, artists performing are: - Kevin Yost (i! Records, Pennsylvania/NJ) - DJ Fluid as Afro-Mystic (Om Records, San Francisco) - DJ Steven Sacks (Premium Soulsonic Megajive, San Francisco/Atlanta) - DJ Huggie (Global Energy Musik, Los Angeles) - Adam Caruso (PLURkids, Detroit) - Jonathan Voigt (STATE:AWAKE, Ann Arbor) MOST IMPORTANTLY: This is a PLURkids event. That means we are all about Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. It does not mean that we tolerate drugs, violence, or bad vibes of any kind. We will have people walking around who's sole job is to make sure everyone is safe and having a good time. If you are there to cause a ruckus or sell your shit, don't expect our firm but friendly security to be so friendly when they eject you from the party! Please leave the anger at home, or don't bother coming. If you have love in your heart, come, share it, and be blessed - we'll see you there. Thanks to all the info on the "poetry". Now that you mention Umar Bin Hassan and the Last Poets I know exactly what you mean as I am familiar with their work and what they represent. While I'm at it, I would like to ask the Adelaide contingent: how Claude Young was last night? Cheers C

Re: [313] Previous v Present turnouts in Detroit
hey, Ive got to second this. I am glad that I was not the only one who found it offensive that Derrick and Omar got a lukewarm reaction for DJ'ing, and an utterly confused look for the poetry(which basically nailed everything that is wrong with American society in 5 minutes) while Rich shows up with a 909 and a compressor and the crowd goes apeshit. Not to hate on Rich, but Derrick May deserved alot more love from that crowd than he got. He was playing those great afro-cuban jazz records by the end, just so lush and deep. Hawtin was alright, it was cool to hear Vaporspace and Lyot on a system, but he was not coming with soul like Derrick May. I guess we are just getting old Phred. Still, the cool thing about being old is we can talk about Genesis PO and reference him outside of being "that guy for modulations who invented acidhouse" :) (inside DEMF joke) Take care, Mike NP Model 500 : Ocean to Ocean [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > Yeah, it was hard to hear Omar Bin Hassan over the teenyboppers around > me screaming "Richie! Re: [313] St.Andy's Next Saturday...
I heard that alot of the acts on the bill didn't even know they were preforming. It also claims to have headliners of Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, and Aux 88. Its going to be a total "ravey" event seeing how most of the kids in my high school keep comming up to me for flyers with it and asking me if any one is good...plus the promoters responsible for this have claim to such parties as Jiggly Puff and other bs parties attracting the attention of little candy ravers...I'd be careful in attending this party u'd probably be surrounded by half the kids in my high school who are obsessed with going to their first rave and eating incredible amounts of illegal substances and sitting on the floor cause...the line up though is a follows: Kevin suanderson, Juan atkins, Auxx88, recloose, space ace, nelz, alan toy, project pong, Richie vegas, pakman, dan diamond, ozone, joefuss, kurious george, pbf, cyborg k, catalyst, roman, steven anthony, protoacl, tyco, manic, sidetone, sayan, spoonbender, Mooku & Binx, the fixxxer, Devoid, Darrian, Jiggy, Squirt -stacey

RE: [313] Previous v Present turnouts in Detroit
Umar Bin Hassan also read the same poem the previous day during Moodyman's... And the precussionist was Sundiata. Wild man! Does anyone know who was MCing during Eddie Fowlkes set? The main guy was Bill Beaver, who some might remember as one of the Members of the House (it'd be sweet as hell to have them regroup for an upcoming DEMF). One of the others is called Boots, and the third guy, I recognize, but forget his name. Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
