Truly surreal.I'll have to check out Dream & Desire as I've not heard of that release before. Is it under Ashram Temple or Manuel's name? From: Charles Prince <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] E2-E4 / UR rareties Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 14:53:34 -0400 Apparently E2-E4 was recorded in one take (i.e. one hour), with no overdubs or editing (apart from those needed for side A & B of the record). Almost inconceivable, isn't it? I also recommend Gottsching's 'Dream & Desire', a bizarre, almost kitschily-beautiful album bedecked with incredible synth work. True phonographer MG talks about E2-E4 & his career at: www.eurock.com/features/ashra/ Just wondering: have all the early UR releases been re-released on vinyl by now? Which ones are left & how rare are they? Which ones are virtually impossible to track down? so you might be a fan then, eh? ;) From: "Stewart Caig" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "313 Newsgroup" <313@hyperreal.org>, "Charles Prince" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [313] E2-E4 / UR rareties Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 20:43:35 +0100 As far as I know the whole of the UR records back catalogue is still readily available, but there are a couple of releases that are rare. UR 46 was only released as part of a double pack on NSC records and is not so easily available. Also the first ever (as far as I know) release by UR was an album called 'Hype Stuff (You gotta Move to)' which featured vocals by Rob Hood, Yolanda Reynolds and a host of others. I'm pretty sure it came out before UR01 as, apart from the copy I have I've never known anyone who has ever heard of it before. Though there is a track on it called 'You've got to show me' that I think was released on Shockwave. Of course you also have the UR Z tracks which are supposedly Assault DJ issue only, SID releases and some other stuff on Shockwave (Acid Rain1). Plus There's the Hipnotech label, which is a UR offshoot that puts out mainly downtempo beaty stuff and lets not forget the album on Network records that had a short track of them live. Any idea on the availability of an edit that I heard Dave Clarke play eons ago. It was a different version of Suburban's 'Nocturbulous Behaviour' straight out of the D. I hate the exclusiveness of tracks that would mean so much to the right people and not just high profile DJ's. While on point, does anyone know of a track by Mills on 'Essence Records'? It only had 50 made and was supposedly called Magma, but it wasn't the one of the same name on Thera. Basically it is a simple string arrangement with the addition of percussion making it one of the most sinister funky grooves I have ever heard. I have only ever heard Claude Young and Surgeon play it. Re: [313] E2-E4 / UR rareties
Stewart Caig: As far as I know the whole of the UR records back catalogue is still readily available, but there are a couple of releases that are rare. couple more for the list: the original UR-021 was the "Piranha" ep, but this has since been replaced by "Crime Report" which was a companion ep to the "Interstellar Fugitives" lp. UR-011 was slated to be the "Panic" ep, but for whatever reason this release was pulled and replaced by Suburban Knight's "Nocturbulous Behaviour". a coupla years ago the pressing plant UR use mispressed a bunch of UR-011's, using the plates for the "Panic" ep by mistake. i've no idea how many copies were produced, but for a short while 5 or so years ago Submerge were selling the mispresses as UR-011-011. rob ps: Tom, yeah i know... choo choo! ;) _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

check out mark 'vistor' broom's 12" on D1 records - a true classic. also, the pt 1 remixes (by, amongst others, octave one) are now available from the same label. otherwise check out label pure plastic for mark broom's and rue east's (mark broom and dave hill) stuff. baby ford's output mostly on his own label ifach. also look out for minimal man, one of his monikers, but don't know what label he released under that name. has also released stuff on reflex. brilliant mark broom and dave hill 12" on warp under name sympletic (i think). released 1995 (?). think it might be still available on vinyl. aidan From: "Bobic Mislav" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Subject: [313] Mark Broom / Baby Ford / Dave Hill / etc ... Actually I have a copy of X-Mix 3 on vinyl and I'm sure the first 2 were also available but I have never seen them. Thought you'd like to know d-JCB Not all the X-Mix series was released on vinyl, and they definately aren't available from !K7 anymore. Hmmm lemme check the network and see what actually was released on vinyl... Looks like probably everything from X-Mix 4 (Dave Angel) on. Good luck finding it. I just bought the new Terrace on, i think, Ifach. A typical Terrace record extremly moody. Dave Hill recorded an excellent 4*10" on some label, under a name i forgot. This was a collaberation with Plaid. Also nice to track down is the first A13 release is woth checking out. I just love that string track with a 303 line on top. Yo Yo Yo Why is there a Metropolis released on Axis and Tresor? Is there some kind of Metropolis collection or something? Anyways, it seems like there was more effort put into the Axis release. Gerald Mitchell
Pick up anything and everything by Gerald Mitchell aka soul saver The 430 west record you mentioned actually incorporates the x2 times technology where 2 songs are on the same side but only one track...a groove within a groove. Great for mixing another song quickly but if the song skips ...ouch an entirely different song might be playing. Gerald is one of the most unknown producers in Detroit and one of the nicest people I have met. All of his stuff has a soulful motownish flavour. Very chordish Detroit Techno/House. He is credited with 1/3 of Jaguar which no one EVER mentions. I would say that the drum programming on this infamous track is his, rather than Mike or Rolando's. I was actually around them when this track was being put together but unfortunately it wasn't under the best circumstances as Mike was looking out for me while a friend spent a night in jail after being beat-up by the police in front of Submerge...for "attempting" to steal a car...our rental! Needless to say this track conjures many emotions for me. Now go buy the rest of Gerald's music! Grindle Audio Architect - Muzak [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Tricky may have gotten caugh up in his own "stardom". Remember, this guy had a somewhat prominent role in the first half of "The Fifth Element" and after that, his music took a dive. Because of bad distributors and record shops, this record went virtually unnoticed when it was released in '97. A criminal shame, because it's a stunningly beautiful record, an absolute gem that deserves to be rated alongside 'Kao-Tic Harmony', 'Icon', 'At Les' and 'Galaxy 2 Galaxy'. I'm not going to stop pushing this record until it is. Jerome Sydenham + Kerri Chandler - 'Saturday' (Ibadan) Album full of great latin/afro-influenced house music from those who do it best. Duplex - 'Autosave' (Ground Zero) Yes, I know it's bad form to list releases on your own label in a top 10, especially when it's the same week that it's being released, but I have to make an exception in this case. Ever since I heard 'Autosave' off of tape in a car almost a year ago, I haven't been this excited about a techno record basically since 'Jaguar' first sent shivers down my spine. Re: [313] Mark Broom / Baby Ford / Dave Hill / etc ...
Baby Ford has done a bunch of great stuff. I find the earlier Ifach stuff that he released to be better than that of late, however he's also done some great stuff on Klang and a superb e.p for Elektro Music Dept. Broom and Hill have hundreds of releases under guises like Rue East and Sympletic and all of the different guises Broom used for Ifach (eggs is eggs, brubaker). Essential Broom is most assuredly the 'Angie is a Shoplifter' LP on Pure Plastic. To me this is the height of Broom's genius, great programming, groovability and moving song structure. Also try and track down the Mark Broom record on Mosaic, it's pretty sweet. All the Rue East stuff seems to blend together in my mind. There are a number of good ep's out by them on Pure Plastic, the last of which has some great twists to it. They share the same sound as Sims and every other tribal tech artist now though, time to move on, or do something different, it's 2001. Actually, the cd was released on Tresor, but Jeff only let them press some of the tracks on vinyl (I believe three tracks were given to the Tresor vinyl release). Six more tracks were released on Axis under the same name. AFAIK there was never a 2x12" on Axis. The cd still has more tracks than both vinyl versions together. gas--"kompression"
I came across these tracks while searching for reinhard voigt stuff on napster. Somebody had a whole single by Gas (which is him, right?). The tracks go like this: A1: Kompression B1: Dekompression B2: Relaxation Does anybody know what release this is or what label? I can't seem to find it in any of the Voigt discographies I've looked at (like on that circonium website or on the force inc/mille plateaux site). The first track is *awesome* and the other ones are good too. I'd love to know more about this releasewell, what I would really love would be to own it, but I guess that's probably a longshot becuase it seems fairly obscure. Thanks to anyone who can help me out on this one.
Re: UR Rarities
> Just wondering: have all the early UR releases been > re-released on vinyl > by now? Which ones are left & how rare are they? > Which ones are virtually impossible to track down? Mad Mike keeps these perpetually in print. http://www.submerge.com has just about everything UR ever did, at something like $4-5 a piece. Can't miss with that. The UR SID stuff you might have to ask about and there are one or two UR 12"s that have been out of print for a long time (Fury and Piranha are the ones that come to mind). A lot of the UR releases can only be appreciated nostalgically or ideologically these days; some sound really painfully dated and some of them were never that good. However there are a couple that remain among the best Detroit 12"s of all time: the Sonic EP, Galaxy 2 Galaxy, Punisher, Message to the Majors, and some of their remixes. Also recommended while you're at Submerge would be the back catalogs of Red Planet and Basic Channel, the former defining modern trance (that sounds awful; don't blame the influencer for the influencees' behavior) and the latter being just about the greatest consistent label in techno outside of KDJ and Sound Signature. (The same is not true, by the way, of Chain Reaction, so those releases aren't really recommended.) Matt
Re: [313] re: gerald mitchell
He also did one of the Red Planet 12"s of recent. Forget the title...but the credit is to someone by a number and I matched it to Gerald since he was given the same number on the Interstellar Fugitives. anyone know of new stuff coming out by him? Everything I have heard 430 West, UR ISF, RP, and Metroplex (GOD what a DEEP record! best Metroplex release in recent times.) minto __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hi all - Just learned that some (all?) of last year's KDJ 5 repressings have two tracks on the A-side I don't suppose anyone on this list wants to sell me one or at least tell me if both tracks are new or if they have appeared elsewhere in the KDJ catalog Matt

Sia Furler, who guests, is a former Adelaide singer - she sang in an acid jazz group Crisp years ago - and has a vocal style so similar to Lauryn Hill it's uncanny, especially on the song Distractions, also on this EP. For those not in the loop Zero 7 have been heralded in the cooler UK press for their chilled grooves - they have remixed Radiohead and Terry Callier in the past, and have been compared to the likes of Air and Kruder & Dorfmeister, etc. It's jazzy and soulful stuff.

Re: [313] Tricky (was: things)
Tricky was one of the most candid and down to earth artists I have ever interviewed, and just for the record, he took an in-depth interest in the experiences of Detroit techno auteurs. He can understand as he was never given the same push as Portishead and it was explained to him by label reps that it was because he was a Black artist doing music not generally considered as 'Black'; Portishead were more marketable. He told me that Bjork was a huge fan of Derrick May and an influence on her work. I personally feel that with Tricky's hip-hop-oriented last album he (and his label) focussed too hard on breaking the US when he will never be able to make 'commercia'l hip-hop and his music will never be grasped by a wider audience because of the way music is racially stereotyped. His influences are all over the place - he's a maverick. No wonder he took an interest in Detroit, then. >Tricky may have gotten caugh up in his own "stardom". Remember, this guy >had a somewhat prominent role in the first half of "The Fifth Element" and >after that, his music took a dive. Some people never get over the "sophmore >slump".
