(313) Recording from PC to MD... was RE: (313) mixer advice

2002-12-06 Thread Chau, Dang
sorry to keep this OT thread going, i'm a fan of my portable MD and thought
Sony's NetMD stuff was pants but found a cool (and cheap!) product that allows
you to get ripped/downloaded/streaming audio from your PC to MD without having
to upgrade your MD

an aussie company xitel produces a USB device allowing you to record from your
PC direct to your mindisc recorder and its compatible with all recording decks.
You plug it in, load up the audio files you want to record from your player of
choice and hit record. i think the MDPort-DG2 sells for about $50 USD, and Sony
sell their products rebadged at an inflated price too!
http://www.xitel.com/

cheers
Dang (not a sales rep for xitel)

- Original Message -

One cautionary word of advice though. If you hope to record to
  minidisc,
then dump the song into NetMD, this will not work b/c of copy
  protection
measures, so you actually need to do it analogue-style. I was a bit
  disappointed by that.

And that is precisely when and where Sony dropped the ball on MD.
 Shame, really.

Especially since this is completely unclear until after you make the
purchase (if you are an idiot electronics impulse shopper like myself
anyway).

2002-12-06 Thread David Gillies
I guess the advantage of the NetMDs is that you can record to them at 32x
speed, whereas with the Xitel MDPort-DG2 its just a straight digital
connection which you can only record to in realtime.

OK, maybe not, but I'm struggling to think of a better one. :) Seriously,
there isn't a bad track on it, and the only one I'm not ga-ga for is the 4

wonderful.

Oh, and while I have your ear, don't forget the new Convextion on DownLow.

the clubbing calendar and this year the line-up is bigger than ever. To
help
celebrate what has been another incredible year for The Gallery, we've

Can anyone give any advice on a good pair of studio monitors around the
£200/$350 mark? I'm familiar withTannoy Reveals but am not so with other
monitors in the same price bracket. I find with my mate's Reveals my mixes
tend to come out too Bassy. I think the reason is I over compensate on bass
during the mix as the speakers don't 'Reveal' the low end frequencies too
well.

Anyone else experience this?

Cheers,

Bergz.

(313) Re: Studio Monitors

2002-12-06 Thread Adam Jay

if anyone cares,
i've been using the Tannoy Proto-J's for well over 2 years now, powered
by my Samson Servo 260 monitor power amplifier.

they are absolutely amazing. i have always loved the frequencies on
them as i don't feel that i have ever under-bass'd, or over-bass'd any
of my recordings with them. and i dont use a subwoofer.

not to mention they usually run about $175-$200 per matched pair.

1 negative point is they are not magnetically shielded, which can really
screw up several computer monitor displays that use tubes (the magnet
from the speakers will destroy the screen). this wasnt a problem for me
when i got them, as i was completely hardware based... and once i
started bringing the computer in my setup - i got a 15 LCD screen which
is not effected by the magnet. now i just run my laptop, a couple
analog filters, and my tannoy's.

if you dont use a big honkin' computer screen in your production setup,
i say check them out. the eq balance is the best i have found for under
$1,000 a pair.

2002-12-06 Thread Simon M Pascoe

I remember somebody in a UK music magazine saying that they used NS10's as
their studio monitors because if they could make their tracks sound good on
them, then they would sound good on anything.

On a slightly related note, does anyone have any recommendations for quality
headphones for monitoring (ie; not DJ headphones) please ?

sImon Pascoe

Jernej wrote;

NS-10 are not recommended as only monitors. All the pro studios only use
them so that people can hear the mix on the same monitors in every
studio, or to simulate lo quality hi-fi speakers... you never see them
used as only monitors. They also seam to be useful as a magnifying
glass for middle frequencies. But in general they sound pretty awful,
and you wouldn't want to listen to them for a long time.

The Gallery's notorious Xmas party is always one of the biggest events on
the clubbing calendar and this year the line-up is bigger than ever. To
help
celebrate what has been another incredible year for The Gallery, we've
invited the king of the airwaves and the most important man in house music,
Radio One's Pete Tong to play a very special Xmas set. Joining Pete will be
two of The Gallery's all-time favourite dancefloor DJ's, Kiss FM's Tall
Paul
and Sister Bliss, the angelic star of UK dance act Faithless..

The Queen of Radio One, Lottie will be hosting T2, alongside Detroit's
techno God, Kevin Sanderson, who'll be spinning a very rare and exclusive
'house' set. Ibiza nutbags, Brandon Block and Alex P will be entertaining
the backroom with their usual antics, whilst the main room support comes
from banging Gallery residents Darren Christian, Steve Lee and Alex
Anderson. Expect all this and much, much more at London's friendliest
all-night club this Xmas.

(313) headphones for monitoring?

 sImon Pascoe

***Simon: Sony's MDR-V600 are good headphones, and
thus good for any type of listening. But, I would
strongly caution you against producing only with
headphones. If you produce with just headphones, your
brain and your ears will work together to make things
sound better than they really are and
psychoacoustically fill in the sonic holes. Then when
you play something on a speaker system that you've
produced while monitoring on headphones, you will find
that your balances will be off (too much/too little of
different frequencies). I broke this rule a month or
so back and it was obvious: I had been working on a
remix for Tristan (Phonopsia) and decided to play with
my rough version during a live PA. All was sounding
great till I dropped in the bassline I had created
and--even over the club's system--it just wasn't
cutting it. Turned out that I had done the bassline
one night while my girlfriend was over; she was really
tired and had gone to bed, and I was working on
headphones so as not to disturb her. So the rest of
the remix, that which had been done on monitors, was
fine, but the balance, because I had done it on
headphones, wasn't all that it was cracked up to be
because my ears and my brain had made it sound better
and more right than it really was. (Over the
headphones, it was like wow, this is a sweet
bassline; over the club speakers--and mind you,
everything else sounded great--it was like uh, what
the hell is this?) Note to Tristan: Don't worry,
I'll be fixing this! :) So, if you want to get a bit
of work done--say late at night--and don't want to
disturb room mates/partners with your work, use the
headphones to get some rough work done (editing sounds,
things like that that aren't frequency and
balance-based) and not disturb them, but it is best to
use monitors and headphones when getting into EQing,
mixdowns, mastering, etc-- monitors to get the balances
right, and then headphones later to listen to the
quieter and more detailed parts, fade outs, listen for
unwanted clicks, errors, etc, and fine tune 'em. Hope
this helps. Take care. Andrew

Is there any way to record without the ATRAC compression? I will mostly be
using the Minidisc to record my DJ sets to then burn to CD on my computer.
Analog input and output is perfect on both ends. I am just worried about
the effects of the ATRAC compression on the sound quality since the end
product will be a CD.

Just looked into Minidisc and it apparently has a built in compression
method which compresses a 74 minute CD to about 160 MB. I had no clue that
 it did that.

Minidisc uses Sony's own ATRAC compression, and newer models offer LP2 and
LP4 compression modes, which is essentially 1/2 and 1/4 compression, so you
can record for 5 hours on one 74 minute disc. That's pretty damn cool,
although the compression is pretty noticeable at LP4. I really love mine.
The compression is equivalent to 160Kbps mp3 on the standard recording mode,
I'd say, which to my ears means that you can't tell - not to open up that
can of worms again. I know it's subjective. Frankly, for DJ sets I think
it's fine. I would never record my music to minidisc as a first-choice
option though.

One other cool thing is that newer minidiscs also support mp3, and you can
cram a lot more mp3s on a minidisc than you can on the comparable price of
smart memory. Of course, the IPod holds gigs upon gigs, which kind of blows
all the other mp3 players out of the water AFAIK.

One cautionary word of advice though. If you hope to record to minidisc,
then dump the song into NetMD, this will not work b/c of copy protection
measures, so you actually need to do it analogue-style. I was a bit
disappointed by that.

Nope. There's no way to do it without ATRAC, but I think you'll find it
unnoticeable. I'd recommend having a listen at your local shoppe if you can.
Your ears will be the best judge of what is acceptible. If analogue in/out
is OK for you, then I'd be surprised if ATRAC is not.

I think people will have these discussions in the awareness that they
are off-topic, but as long as no-one says anything people will try to
get away with it! But if there are protests then people will drop the
topic. I guess 313 has always had a bit of a tendency to do this sort of
thing though - it moves in cycles really.

And no, I don't want to end up creating a meta-thread here :)

Indeed I will be checking them out! The next big WIDE night at Herbal

RE: (313) headphones for monitoring?

2002-12-06 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Brendan

I think people will have these discussions in the awareness that they
are off-topic, but as long as no-one says anything people will try to
get away with it!

I started off thinking this ... then I got (cheap pun intended fully
intended)

... drawn in?

And I thought, actually, this is quite interesting! I may be happy with my
second-hand Pioneer mixer and random choice of dex, but it's nice to hear
people who really appear to know what they're doing discuss the real deal.

Just count yourselves lucky that I haven't been discussing the AKAI/Roland
samplers I'm considering buying in public!

The 2 new Drexciya Projects? (Rephlex/Tresor)

The Transllusion LIFE album on Rephlex is definitely one of the Drexciya
related projects people should check out. It's exceptionally (even for
Drexciya) freaky and odd especially when compared with some of the
straighter output (Other People Place) - but there's some beautiful moments
on it too. There is a Transllusion 12 also on Rephlex that is not so hot
IMO - check out the album first.

I think off topic discussions is what has kept me,
and i believe a lot of people, on this list. Sometimes
a breather from 'track id' or a discussion about
saunderson, mills etc. is needed. There are other
dimensions to detroit music, djing and
producingand I'm sure there are other dimensions
to us as people.

As for headphones, I personally like my big ole Sonys
that have a button that allows me to turn off one ear.

how's that for technical talk;)

strongly caution you against producing only with

 your

 things
sound better than they really are and
psychoacoustically fill in the sonic holes. Then
 when
you play something on a speaker system that you've
produced while monitoring on headphones, you will
 find
that your balances will be off (too much/too
 little of
different frequencies). I broke this rule a month
 or
so back and it was obvious: I had been working on
 a
remix for Tristan (Phonopsia) and decided to play
 with
my rough version during a live PA. All was
 sounding
great till I dropped in the bassline I had created
  and--even over the club's system--it just wasn't
cutting it. Turned out that I had done the
 bassline
one night while my girlfriend was over; she was
 really
tired and had gone to bed, and I was working on
headphones so as not to disturb her. So the rest
 of
the remix, that which had been done on monitors,
 was
fine, but the balance, because I had done it on
headphones, wasn't all that it was cracked up to
 be
because my ears and my brain had made it sound
 better
and more right than it really was. (Over the
headphones, it was like wow, this is a sweet
bassline; over the club speakers--and mind you,
everything else sounded great--it was like uh,
 what
the hell is this?) Note to Tristan: Don't
 worry,
I'll be fixing this! :) So, if you want to get a
 bit
of work done--say late at night--and don't want to
disturb room mates/partners with your work, use
 the
headphones to get some rough work done (editing
 sounds,
things like that that aren't frequency and
balance-based) and not disturb them, but it is
 best to
use monitors and headphones when getting into
 EQing,
mixdowns, mastering, etc-- monitors to get the
 balances
right, and then headphones later to listen to the
quieter and more detailed parts, fade outs, listen
 for
unwanted clicks, errors, etc, and fine tune 'em.
 Hope
  this helps. Take care. Andrew

delete.

that said, the 313techknow yahoo group might be a better place to talk

How about Every Dog Has Its Day 3 - if only for the last track? The

I'm going to go on a bit of a record-buying spree tomorrow -
 the first
in several months in fact. I was wondering if anyone had any
 particular
recommendations for essential records that have come out over
summer/autumn this year? Aside from the obvious, of course, such as:

  - all the new UR/Los Hermanos/Red Planet things
  - The Robert Hood stuff on Peacefrog and Logistic
  - Metro Area album
  - Those Music Box bootlegs
  - The release on OurTime

Anything else to add to my list?

 Thanks!

I'd like to know what the words are in this track. It chants choose and

pretty diverse and interesting over the last weeks.
And even if I don't understand half of the tech

Oh btw., re mp3-players: iPods rock! I got the

I think I got about 30 DJ and live sets on it (thanks

Is Ultradyne playing in the UK at all, or have

who was sub-zero?

On the Techno City Records 1989 compilation There's no way out (of

I often hear it discussed here but I've never bothered to ask if there's any
relationship between 'Final Cut' and 'The Final Cut', which was an
Industrial album from '92 or '93 (they have one compilation appearance
listed here: http://www.discogs.com/artist/The_Final_Cut but it says nothing
about the album, which I believe was also released on Netwerk). IIRC, they
had something to do with Chris Connely of Wax Trax fame, but this goes back
a decade since I've heard this stuff. I remember the very end of the last
song on the the album samples Malcolm McDowell in 'Clockwork Orange' saying,
Is that the end then? I was quite enjoying that!

Any relation between the two? I always assumed there was, but I don't know

(313) vestax pcv series

2002-12-06 Thread Andrew James Hegler
Actually the faders on the PCV mixers _were_ faulty. Although, Vestax offered
to ship a free replacement crossfader for the mixers that had these faulty
ones. It was only the original PCV mixers, I had 2 of them, heh. The new ones
have the updated PCV faders though, and mine works excellently. The one thing
you need to know though, if you plan on using external effects, balanced cables
are a necessity, I got serious balance trouble when I used two standard mono
cables for the sends and receives, but after I bought balanced cables, my mofx
works great with the mixer. I also have an er-1 I tinker with on the third
channel of my pcv 275, all three channels, both line and phono work excellent.
Just be careful with the kill switches, the low end switches can cause a pop if
you don't cut before or after the kick. To sum up, I love my 275, and after
getting the replacement fader, have had nothing but success with it.
-Andy

It was right around this time that Mills transitioned out of the group.

BMI has that song credited to Mills and Srock -- the original two in
Final Cut.

Did i miss something, or was that the first time i've seen Andrew Duke

That is, the 12 version on Full Effect records that came out after the
 album version on Big Sex.

It was right around this time that Mills transitioned out of the group.

Yeah, The Final Cut did release another album on Nettwerk (i think)
without Mills of course.

Funny that this thread just came up. that 12 is sitting on top of a
pile of records right beside me - I decided to break it out when i was
playing some records for friends at a small loft party last week. :)

(313) techno/breakbeat blends

2002-12-06 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight
I'm looking for tracks that have blend of techno/breakbeat/jungle - I'm
think of the RS/Apollo style
- like Point Blank's Mengs theme (jeroen verheij rmx)
- Darren Price
- Wax Doctor
- Ken Ishii
etc.

I seem to remember some Detroit releases had these types of sounds -
jungle/techno mix without the hardcore - more strings

anyone point me to some tracks old or new?

I know Jacob's Optical and the Nu Era/4 Hero stuff - but maybe there are
remixes they've done that might fit

I'd like to find more techno/breakbeat stuff that isn't really dark - more
ah, Time Space Transmat like - sorry I'm fishing for a good description
