Re: Fwd: (313) looking for acid (house)[when I hear ACEEEEEEEED!!! all I can say is ACEEEEEEEED!!!]
Barada (Bryan Zentz) and, of all people, Mark Farina, have put out some good aciid in the last couple of years. Mark of course is much better known for his downtempo DJing and tracks, but he can really mix just about anything in the right situation. As long as I've known Mark, I've only seen him *play* a real acid set once -- here in Portland, must have been about 1995. He made notes bounce off different walls, collide and fall onto the speakers, do barrel rolls over the dance floor. In other words, just what you want a top-shelf acid house set to be. He's a great DJ, and I'm not criticizing -- just wish he had the inclination and the audience to do it more often. The audience thing is the hard part these days -- the cultural context for acid is long gone and the austerity of the sound doesn't lend itself to the current ear which is tuned to overproduced, overbusy house and flat, affectless techno. Acid house on a really big sound system is an experience like no other. The records just aren't the same at all, even when I crank up my decently sized practice system. I play a lot of acieeed anyway, even the cheesier stuff. At the peak of the west coast acid boom in 1992 my friend M used to say, they're playing that damn 'rocket ships' track again, but you know, it always sounds great anyway . . . And now that I have a 303 I can play along . . . :) -- fred
Re: (313) Juan Atkins officially awarded for the 'International achievment'
I think it's silly to compare - like saying who is more beautiul J Lo or Halle Berry or, um, Christy Turlington? Like saying who is the best rapper of all time - this person or this person. Art is not a sport. I don't think this is the place to play divide and conquer - even unwittingly. I very much doubt that there is any of that negativity. On a global level these awards, while symbolic, count for little - the records are the legacy and all three have made some incredible music and influenced many worldwide. No one can dispute that. i was keepin quiet, but this is a f**king travesty. what has juan done besides make some special records 20 YEARS AGO!!! derrick and kevin deserve this award, because they've put their time, energy and $$$ into making the Detroit festival happen. but no matter what they do, they'll forever be tied to juan- the man who couldn't even make his DEMF gig (and hundreds of other gigs) The man who as recently as this summer blew off throwing the opening pitch at a tigers game and i believe skipped the Metro times Motor City Music Awards after they flew him to Detroit to recieve a lifetime achievement award. Sure, the guy made some influential records. So friggin what. If I were Derrick or Kevin, i'd be disgusted, that after all their recent efforts, they still have to share the spotlight with a person who has done nothing to benifit the city in the past decade. All because some European idiots with too much time on thier hands and a collection of ancient texhno wax felt that made them experts on Detroit civics. friggin shame --- Hi Yussel... First let me say you that if you can keep polited your post, it will be more valuable and respectable. In place of a 'Stupid European', let me explain you why your post is a total non-sense. 1/ Since 20 years now, Techno music is submited to us 'stupid europeans' as a style invented and developped by Mr Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. 2/ Money put into Movement by Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson is not the subject. Not anymore than Juan Atkins is present or not at some partys/events. 3/If you read carefully the letter writing for the guestbook in support to Juan Atkins, you will find the reach point of this support. Juan Atkins was excluded from this 'awards' due to his location. Not due to his participation or not to the Techno music in Detroit or anywhere in the world since twenty years or one year. 4/The recent efforts of Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson are totally respectable and we are (stupid europeans) in admiration on their job to keep Detroit Movement festival alive. Again, it's totally out of the subject. 5/They will be disgusted to share the award with Juan Atkins? Since the begining of Techno Music, they was not 'disgusted' to share the spotlight with the title of 'originators' and this title is certainly a part of their success and the 'international achievment'. Even if it's a minimal part. And again, BIG RESPECT to Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. And I'd like to remember you that 'stupid europeans' have done a lot for Detroit Techno. Do you remember labels like Buzz Records, RS, Tresor, ... And they continue to do it. Majority of peoples who have signed the guestbook are europeans who keep Detroit techno at a high level in Europe. I don't know where you have finding any informations about our 'too much time in our hands'... But let me say you that it is not your problem. Please put your attention in your own life and not in our own life. Too, we are not only fans of 'ancient techno wax'... And we are not 'experts'... But we are supporters and fans of Detroit Techno and this give us the right to defend something we trust and for what we have passion and love. For your information, it's an american who have writing the letter in support to Juan Atkins. You have the right to don't agree with our action, but again I ask you only one thing. Be polited. 313 list is not a place for war between races or locations where you are from. A last word, I respect deeper all americans and all others on this planet. For me we are all the same, black, white, yellow, pink/green/orange if you want ! But some peoples have what we call the respect and the education some have not

Nick Taylor is actually quite well known in Aus amongst the outdoor party scene, and his profile in Sydney is growing rapidly. He's based in Byron Bay (Australia's mecca for hippies - well, trustafarians at least) and while the music he plays is hardly 313 material, he still is a kickass DJ with a great sound. I always look forward to hearing him at doofs because it's a welcome relief from all the psy-trance. He describes his sound as 'psychedelic acid disco'. The jury's out on whether it contains soul or authenticity though - I suspect it might induce taste-spasms amongst a large number of folk here... AW: (313) Kenny Larkin/Dark Comedy album
New Kenny Larkin album! For your interest... the official press release! DARK COMEDY-MUSIC SAVES MY SOUL SELF-OBSESSION, it's the 21st century epidemic. M-m-my generation has become the me-me-me generation and reality has become a TV show which turns our next door neighbours into stars that flicker and die in the blink of an eye. It's Warhol's fifteen minutes reductio ad absurdum, Alice navel-gazing through the looking glass. And while our cathode ray icons relentlessly chant mirror, mirror on the wall ... the myth of Narcissus - condemned to waste away adoring his own image - seems entirely apposite. Earlier this year was perfect timing then for Detroit techno legend Kenny Larkin to deliver his long-awaited new album. After all, it's was roughly seven years since his last release. The Narcissist - 11 carefully considered electronic gems guaranteed to provide an antidote to the superficial whirl. From the swooning synthetics of Fake French to the seductive, undulating groove of In The Meantime, it reflects both where he's been and where he's coming from now. Larkin returns with his second release for 2004, under his alter self, Dark Comedy with, quite arguably, his most impressive, and important release to date. Titled, Funk Faker: Music Saves My Soul, Larkin wastes no time in establishing himself as one of Detroit's most intriguing and multi-faceted talents. Exploring the full range of his musical persona, Larkin pushes himself to tap into a soulful side of him that although present in his earlier releases, finds itself deeply entrenched in, and modeled after African American music from years' past. He unapologetically leaves no ambiguity about his intentions. Which, is to remind others how and why soul music, in it's many shapes, sizes, and guises, undeniably taps the most primal emotional and moral attributes that makes a human, a human being. This is electronic black music in it's rawest, purest form. Stripped of slick, modern day production techniques, polished vocals, and mechanically quantized melodies, Larkin instead focuses on funky, laid back organ solo's, James Brown-esque horn stabs, bluesy guitar riffs reminiscent of John Lee Hooker, and Larkin's self narrative, comical, blues-style vocals. Larkin thrusts himself into a genre not yet discovered by his electronic contemporaries from Detroit, or quite arguably anyone for that matter, by mixing blues, funk, jazz, house, and a pinch of techno. Funk Faker: Music Saves My Soul 's aim is not to be dissected, and analyzed, it's purpose is to be felt. Larkin's unique interpretation of the many black genres of music, that inspired him as a child, leaves the listener with only one option...tap your feet, and move your ass. Witness why African American music, in any form, continues to influence almost every genre of music today. Dark Comedy- Funk Faker: Music Saves My Soul will be released on Poussez in November. -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: Greg Earle [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Gesendet: Donnerstag, 16. I just called it like i saw it. Maybe I'm crazy... if this is all my imagination i'm actually relieved that it's just some bizarre oversight in your communication technique all this time. Personally i'm a fan of direct accountability. i no wait- no one on this list reads anything except dan sicko and technotourist (no offence to either). nahh, if you think there's something great in urb, or WIRE, or XLR8R, or WaxPoetics, or KeepOn, or FutureMusic, or wherever else, tell the list! the articles you wrote about sound interesting.. feel free to plug them, post them online (if you have can, i know that's often not possible), they sound on topic to me. i let my subscription expire years ago when i felt Urb was going downhill... but you're totally right i haven't checked in lately. I always read the Scott Sterling bits back before it got more wide and RB stars were on the cover. I'm not anti Urb, i'm anti blanket tabloid-y Jerry Springer Show dissing of anyone you feel like hating on. I am anti- any music journalist who just thinks they have to be a bitter trash talker in order to be thought of as 'in the know', or worse, someone who has to trash talk in order to make us ignorant zombies look past the haze of blind fan-dom. Most of us here can. It just seemed to me like you're so dead set on debunking anyone genuine love for the music that you want to come after these artists for reasons that frankly I don't think that many people give a care about... I don't think 313 is a place for exposing all the warts you know and want everyone else to know, if it's irrelevant to the records and the music.. it seems like you feel it's your duty to keep trotting that stuff out as soon as someone is getting praised for something. it's like you think you're doing 313 some great service as a hard-hitting investigative reporter that will bring The Light down to us ignorant sycophant simpletons. I just wanted to tell you it's annoying to see it played out over and over. New day, different thread, but the same haytin. I think it's lame you just have also cast us all in a single brushstroke as not up for debate, not willing to criticize, that's a pretty oversimplified view... some of just have an internal ill hater regulation meter, where yours is apparently in need of a tune up. i'm sure you somehow think that your little college radio show somehow makes more of an impact than a national magazine that gives a consistant spotlight to underground music. all i can do is laugh, that's a good one! come one, we've met, it's funny you think i'd think that... I don't think i'm making an impact on sh!t except on how much of my paycheck I spend on bandwidth transfer each month.. ha. Frankly i have no delusions of making a differece beyond a fairly niche group of listeners in town and online, and while i'd love national impact, it's not my lifelong goal and I have no delusions of grandeur about what i'm doing. I'm a nobody! I like DJing and digging and the fact that i have an opportunity to share classic music I find interesting every week is something i do for free, and something i'm grateful I have a forum for, however miniscule it is. The site is basically just a ghetto blog for audio files. By contrast, Urb will always reach 10 million more people, if only because it's advertiser supported so it has funding so it has legs, reach, marketing, momentum. That's what it's for. That's why Urb exists. I'm not saying Urb doesn't have a right to exist, it fills a niche for what it is, and it's great people can have writing for Urb as a fulltime job, cause you're into music like we all are, but you're getting paid to write for it and that's awesome, actually, if you like what Urb is all about. Playing/unearthing/mixing records is, however, more fun to me than writing about them, but to each his own and I am glad there are both writers and DJs. And people who do both. But just so you know my show is making NO more than a tiny tiny difference, but one i'm into making, and that's a personal decision I'm comfortable with. I'm not chasing fame as a DJ (obviously! i missed that boat 10 years ago) and I think it's funny as hell anyone would think I am, especially in this country. I also know I could lose the radio slot at any time, so i try to make the most of it while I still can... Also - I'm

RE: (313) looking for acid (house)
The 2 releases by ½ Jack: Half Inch Jack : EP01 Half Inch Wallbanger Jammin' I Like To Move Mr Digits A suspicious four track EP of proper jacking and slamming Chicago house obscurities, re-edited for maximum contemporary club use by person or persons unknown, but if you've got a working knowledge of UK / US deep house, there are only a few peeps it could possibly be! HALFINCH01 Half Inch Jack : The Crash EP Half Inch The Crash Body Work Circuits The second Half Inch Jack EP follows on from the first, presenting old school house sounds tweaked and re-engineered for 21st century soundsystems. Three tracks of Trax-ian funk. HALFINCH02 are OK, liked the second more than the first, though where they fall in a 'house rather than techno' range I don't want to judge, they're a bit like a Swag or Tejada take on Chicago goodies. Pasted the descriptions from http://www.piccadillyrecords.com/ so you could have a listen there, think they still have stock.

I really like Dusk Til Dawn, although I realise that hardly anyone else does... I think Marsel likes it too, actually? This subject came up a couple of weeks back: ...while everyone else I've spoken to about it says they really don't like the B side track, I'm very much drawn to it. I first heard it blind (went to visit a friend and he put it on without showing me the label) and was really blown away by it. It's a really unusual and distinctive set of sounds used, but I like that, and as Marsel says, it puts me in mind of older Kenny Larkin material. Although there's still something undeniably 21st-century about the sound! Looking forward to hearing it played out too. The way I see it is, Adverts could be a great source of funding for underground artist - we never get any radio play and will probably never reach the shelf in HMV - creative ad people want music that stands out, not the pop pap in the charts - it makes sense that they turn to us. I guess a lot depends on what the advert is but personally I'd find it quite funny to hear one on my tracks, with added minty fresh smiles. It's kinda like people finding it odd/strange that Mad Mike plays golf, man even Jimi Hendrix had to boil an egg at some point. The starving artist is no fun I can tell you. way I see it is, Adverts could be a great source of funding for underground artist I agree, and TV show licensing stuff too Kirk Degiorgio has done some work for Adidas (right?), Aphex did Pirelli, Tejada has done some too. If it's a way to fund a legit underground label or buy new gear to support the creation of a self-published LP for these DIY'ers, then it's kind of silly not to, provided they are comfortable with the terms of said contract (which vary widely!) and it is done w/ integrity. Traxx is from Chicago and has indeed been hot lately; he substituted for Dabrye at the Ghostly/Matthew Dear show in Mpls, and threw down an excellent set. his better performances have a classic quality that draws from both acid house and early industrial music, though he plays a lot of newer cuts along those lines. interesting guy to chat with as well, he's been involved in the Chicago scene for many, many years. - bot - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Friday, September 17, 2004 7:19 am Subject: Re: Fwd: (313) looking for acid (house) JT wrotei'm curious about that dirty criminals album... Re: (313) Minty Fresh Metro Men
the mailman delivers again. :) don't wanna be no yussel here, but since *a* debate is going on... about the commercial... who cares. the real question is are MA tracks any good? first i have to say this: i bought MA#1 when it came out, 2 copies (sold one later for 50euros hehe). i liked and played it a lot and still do so today. i still buy all their records (never bought any of the other neo-disco-dub-boogie stuff or any dutch neo-italo for that matter, seems pointless to me). if it wouldn't have been for theo parrish a bit earlier i guess it would have been MA to get me interested in disco, italo, 80s boogie, etc (to get me interested in things other than techno again!) and to open up a whole new world for me. one could even say that MA started a new (retro) genre all by themselfs. plus certain aspects of MA tracks certainly are original, the pairing of disco sensibilities with (post) detroit moodyness, the production, some sort of melodic minimalism, the pairing of the laidbackness of deep house with again disco-boogie elements ... huge props are due. but today i'm not as naive anymore as i was in 1999. today i can see that MA's style, the sounds, the arrangements, the ideas are *old*. sometimes (most of the times?) the ideas are lifted straight from old tunes! today i rather hear some weak song from the original era than a MA track, at least you can be sure that the original track has some weirdness in it (or something i at least perceive as strange), while the MA track is nicely debugged. not all music has to live up to the high standards of originality, most of the times it's enough that the tune is a good tune and basta (and i own many many good tunes), but i really love and respect songs or tracks that are good (ie which i plainly like) *and* which are new, unheard of, pushing boundaries (or i which at least perceive as such). morgan geists's today's rb tracks fall in this category imo. i'm awfully bad at following up my statements. please forgive my if there should be replies to my comment and i maybe won't respond to them. armin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey. (313) loosefingers vs loosefingers 2
My opinion, There isn't anything wrong with the oosefingers ep pt. 2, but its just ok. Is it something special in my opinion, not really. But the loosefingers ep (part 1 if you will) is a deep house jewel. I even wrote a review just for this list about. Larry Heard is certainly a fantastic producer of deep house, and it really comes through on the first ep -jk On Friday, September 17, 2004, at 01:45 PM, Matt MacQueen wrote: On Sep 17, 2004, at 4:31 AM, Tristan Watkins wrote: The new Abe Duque stuff is about as pure as the original stuff, as is the new Loosefingers release. Matt MacQueen forwarded me yussel's reply to him, which was addressed to 313 as well as Matt directly. Why it didn't appear in the Digest is anyone's guess. Anyway, I just wanted to apologize to Matt, I didn't really think he would reply publicly to private e-mail, which is why I phrased it the way I did (asking which it was). Wednesday, September 15, 2004 Hip-Hop Atoms For the first time, a team of physicists of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has controlled the movement of a single atom back and forth between neighboring locations on a crystal. This will allow to build nanoscale devices atom by atom. Not happy enough with this technological breakthrough, the NIST team also discovered that the atoms were 'noisy' when moving on the crystal surface. They converted the electronic signals emitted by the atoms into audio ones and they were quite surprised to hear something similar to a 'hip-hop' musician's rhythmic 'scratching'. http://mindjack.com/relay (as an aside i wanted to resend what i wrote when i first heard of laura's passing. couldn't find it. suffice it to say that i never met laura offline but always appreciated her willingness to fight for detroit. our numbers are growing...in part due to her efforts.) peace (now from BALTIMORE) lks

The sketchy conditions of listening booths in record stores get you ready for the skanky conditions you encounter when actually playing out. I won't name names, to protect the guilty, but one club I was in had the usual half-falling-out-of-the-shell cartridge, and the floor was littered with trash and what looked like mouse droppings. So be thankful when you at least get two stereo channels in the store headphones :) -- fred
