Last big band I worked with made nothing on the actual concerts, in fact
they lost $10,000 a gig - the only thing they made money on was the t-shirts

I think the point is that people will spend money on concerts as opposed to
records (which in theory they can download for free or minimal cost) and so
artists will draw their living from live performances.
It's a very good point and quite accurate I believe.

Yes, that is very true for Australia, but I have no figures.
Alicia Keys' latest record is considered a commercial failure (to BMG's
dismay, many of the staff believed in what is an extraordinary record) yet
her Australian shows have sold out.
I think people - young people - are putting money in mobile phones and so
don't have as much money for records. They download. Also people spend
money on live shows and download music. Many a musician says that touring,
not record sales, is their main source of income these days.
Australia has always had a strong live circuit though.

Music isn't selling as it used to, period. The market is in
transition and no one knows where it's heading. I think it's some
kind of technological revolution that we don't completely understand as
   of
  yet.
There does seem to be a trend for underground acts to set themselves
up as bands, get a singer, and make something more organic, perhaps
less 'faceless'. I don't think it's necessarily cynical as after all
most grew up with bands like Depeche Mode or whatever (many techno
types here are old goths, weirdly, who are rediscovering their love
of bands like The Cure) and that's a genuine avenue of exploration
for a maturing producer. But at the same time I hear a lot of tracks
with vocals, not songs, and when the music is like that it's not
especially memorable, doesn't stand out, doesn't click. I'm not sure
what I'm trying to say - I'm not a slave to pop structures, but... I
think Technasia make brilliant techno 'songs' with hooks and the vocals
  and everything - superb.
The songs with Charles Siegling and their instrumentals are first-rate.
I am sure with a different marketing strategy (and some money for
   videos, ha
ha) they could have become a techno Daft Punk without changing their
   music at
  all.

Of course! I knew I was forgetting that one from when you mentioned it a
little while back. I got the 2nd Diamons Pearls a couple of weeks ago,
which is by Morten Cargo At Ease (the guys that did the flip to 001). It's
got one really nice track on it but it's kindof a pain to mix (just the
timing of the breakdowns and pace of the beginning), but worth checking at
any rate. Just gave 001 a listen here: http://www.dnp-music.com. Sounds
dope! Note: their store is not secure though!

But, here's something I got if you're interested. (edited)

Dear all,

The IFPI earlier this week asked JetGroove to remove all infringing
material from their site - they responded well to this request.

From a catalogue of 55,000 tracks, there are now only 800 listed on the
site.

(313) records

2004-10-14 Thread alex . bond
Bonjour Kids.

I'm bored.

So I'm going to talk about records.
Apologies to anyone this bores or the 2 seconds it takes to delete this
mail.

I'm nicking Tristan's style, and doing 20 sec reviews.

I've had recently:

Godson EP on Still Music: Killer, playing the inside track on the B. Big
drum workout, great dj tool. Good all round EP

Ultradyne on Black Label: Feckin 'ell. Killer. Playing A1 at about -7 and
it sounds ace. Killer electronic funk. really starts swinging at this
speed. Loving it.

Nwaq Strike LP: Beautiful electronics. soo deep. can't take the Sun
off the cd player.

Yoav B EP : Boogie Down Saturn. Liked the last one, loving this one too.
Rough housey/boogie electronic funk. Good tempo to play with all kinds,
great!

Shed on Delsin: 1 super ace techno track on here, just flicked the rest,
more reports after I've listened properly.

Got some other bits too, but I'm short on free time at the min, not had
chance to check properly.

Thanks

Alex

Really sorry to hear about this. It stinks. Think I mentioned BPI etc. and
their stance in a reply to Brendan in a previous thread.

Your mail arrived seconds after I said there was going to be audio on our

Not that it matters at present as I can't get the thing to work anyway (so
ignore that stuff about checking it, any peeps who were going to). Oh well,

Can they do that without telling you specifically which copyrighted works

Matt

Here in Europe I'm afraid we have to deal with this, don't know how it is in
the states. Basically these people have the legal right to go round
collecting money of all and sundry for playing music. Wherever! If it's in
public they want £. On the net, on the radio, in a disco, in a hairdresser,
in a shop. This money is then supposedly distributed to artists. But of
course no small independent ever sees a penny. So you can have club playing
underground sounds and this lot come along, tax the venue an extortionate
amount and then make off with it to their fancy offices in Paris and no
musician or label gets a penny. Guess if they've got the right to collect
royalties whether they're paying people or not they can shut you down too.

they did tell me.

something on nu-groove (in placid's mix)

and something on de-construction (in paul mac's mix)

but that is neither here nor there.

all mixes have tracklists. maybe that's where i made the mistake.

thing is tho without tracklists no-one can track the tunes down and buy
product from BPI members labels.

Yeah this seems strange, unless you've violated their (or someone they
represent) copyrighted material how can they tell you to take down the
site? Surely if they don't 'own' any of the music on the site all they
can do is report you to the people who do.

There needs to be some sort of system setup where producers can opt
in/out of a scheme which allows your music to be released for
promotional purposes online. What's the difference a mix where each
record is on for under 1 min between audio clips on record stores? I bet
quite a few smaller labels and artists would do so.

I'd say 75% of music I've bought in the past year has been stuff I've
heard on mixes. It's a real shame :(

I'd suggest caution when putting the site back up, they may not take to
kindly to asking the same people again and again.

For crying out loud, DJ mixtapes are one of The Five Pillars Of Dance Music.

BPI act on behalf of artists/labels, but you do wonder how many would be
troubled about the copying in this instance. Other than the likes of
Deconstruction, who are BMG in disguise.

Anyone wanna leave BPI and join my newly-formed BLP Phonographic

At many points in time when I was younger, people used to say to me (more
or less) Do you REALLY think you'll still be listening to this kind of
music when you're 40? [the assumption obviously being that it was just a
fad]

It didn't really matter WHAT it was that I was listening to. Since it
wasn't mainstream pop, I suspect that it was because it was music THEY
didn't appreciate.

the idea that I should grow out of liking a certain kind of music just
because I've gotten older seemed ridiculous when i was younger and it
seems even more ridiculous now.

I'm 35 and I still listen to all the music that was called into question
when I was younger. I listen to a wider variety of music than I did when
I was 12, but that doesn't mean that I don't still enjoy the music I
enjoyed when I was 12, such as disco, which was club music also.

So why on earth wouldn't I still want to throw down some Pantytec when I'm
60?? Maybe there will be some other heads in the old folks home eager to
hear some golden oldies other than Britney Spears and Eminem.

RE: (313) Plastikman on Discovery Channel

2004-10-14 Thread Gerald
Just remember, you can check out the video sometime next week.

Part 2 was mainly about soundlevels in clubs. They tested a dj's
hearing, and for some reason he had a pronounced hearing loss in his
right ear. I wonder why. ;o)
...and the real reason I mentioned part 2 was just to let everyone know
that the doctor who was doing the soundcheck experiment, was...

Dr. Willy Wong!

Cheers!

(313) New Metroplex

2004-10-14 Thread John Sokolowski

Submerge has a new Metroplex, Model 500 - Outer Space.
The clips sound good, but then again you can't always trust clips.

(313) Other records floating my boogie board - 20 second reviews

My investments in electronic music's future, trying not to repeat those
already discussed aplenty:

Blake Baxter : Poetry And Rhythm - Session Two (Nice covers of Depeche
Mode's Enjoy the Silence)

Etiop: Sub + Sub (Recognition Poland) 12: (Newcomer on Jacek Sienkiewicz'
Recognition label. 'Mysticism' has a kinda-acidic bassline, merged with
detuned pads and slightly-clicky beats)

Solo Action: Opulence (Solo Action Germany) (*PROPER* techno. All three
tracks killer)

Analog Fingerprints : Age of Hypocrisy (New Marco Passirani on
Submerge-affiliated label, churning out classic Detroit and full-on rave
sounds. All four track = detonation)

Kirk Degiorgio : EP3 - (Four tracks of kinda-slow Detroitiotechno)

Duplex 100 : Extrapoliert (MJ goes UR)

Horror Inc. : I Plead Guilty (Akufen goes deep dark piano)

Karizma : Strings Emotional EP (Interesting 'deep burnt'-style strings
with
a kinda UR synth taking over the second half. A bit tracky, but good)

Sebo K : Changes EP (Drum 'n bass producer doing acid and old school
Chicago
stuffs)

Ultradyne : The Privilege Of Sacrifice (Sinister stuff Alex! I totally
scared a hungover friend with it Sunday morning. Some of the synths remind
me a bit of Skinny Puppy, which is a big compliment in my book)

DJ Rels : Theme For A Broken Soul (Madlib and Peanut Butter Wolf go broken
beat, and end up sounding something like Theo Parrish were he to do the
same. A few gems on here, solid throughout)

Umod : Enter The Umod (Differently broken beats from Domu. 'For Funk's
Sake'
and 'What Melody' are sick, particularly the latter, which has as much
attention to detail as any track I've hear. Domu's stil on a roll. The 12
of 'Tromboline' is also worth getting for the flip)

Various Artists : Del Alma Sampler Vol.1 (New on Amalgama, featuring a
tasty
Titonton stuff that may be atyically broken enough to not scare away those
who don't usually feel broken beat stuff)

808 State : Prebuild (Ancient rarities unearthed on Rephlex. Particularly
enjoying 'The Ride', 'Sex Mechanic' and 'Automatic')

Population One : Earth 2976 (Old Terrence Dixon reissue on Metroplex. All
three tracks nice. Crappy recording or pressing but still playable)

Mike L Lanoiraude : Mystic River EP (Sounds like a Charles Webster
Remix.
It is a Charles Webster remix!)

Bjork : Medulla (Mostly acapella album featuring Icelandic choruses and
Razell, formerly of The Roots. A must for fans)

Ame : Mifune / Shiro (Two excellent new tracks on Sonar Kollektiv, the
first
reminding me a bit of Attend 1 without being unoriginal)

Ethnic Heritage Ensemble : Running In The Streets (Another Charles Webster
Remix. A slow builder. Really tasty if that's your thing)
