Which mine or the GM executives? Mine is pure opinion, I prefer dark art. I actually live in Detroit, this is nothing new. Bankruptcy? pff whatever. The state's take-over tactic isn't ever going to happen unless Detroit does declare bankruptcy, why? because if the State were to actually take Detroit over it would incur the debt as well. Re: (313) Detroit Guide
I don't know the family but I've heard of her shop before, I doubt it is a scam. If anything I'd view it as an introduction and also a good time to publish such a book. Gewgle maps are pretty creepy almost in my opinion, I've used it to look at my apartment before. You can defiantly look around places like heidelberg.org with their satellite/street view. I wouldn't recommend walking/driving around with a book-guide though. As cliché as it sounds, thieves target people who look out of place and most of the robberies I hear about are for cash and or smart-phones. Read it at home or at the hotel, at the end of the day anything that brings money here is cool with me. Honestly though, the stereotypical Detroiter doesn't expect people to travel here as an end destination unless there is a big sports event or festival. I'm not sure if it will address segregation and etiquette though, I've heard Milwaukee is worse but personally it is the most segregated metro area I have ever been/lived in. Re: (313) DEMF 2012 Post-Op
The local news this morning reported it was the most tickets sold since it went private. It is very interesting to see how the movement brand has evolved. It will be very hard to get a crowd the size of the free festivals but I think electronic music is not going to fade away in our lifetime. Afterparties? Visionquest's need I say more 7 party at the Old Miami was cool, the weather was great and the backyard was bumping until about 8pm Monday. The cover was 10$, drinks were taxed up for the holiday and the sounds were oversexed (sexy lyrics), housed up, and minimal funk basslines. If the partied had continued further I might have just stayed there as it was closer to home. Cheers to the Detroit-Berlin crew for keeping it real. Monday evening at Heart Plaza seemed busy as usual, arabmusik was beating on his Akai, seemed to have a 90s rave sound. To elaborate, breakbeats and shrill monophonic synth lines in the vein of early prodigy--except with dubstep beats--seven minutes was plenty for my Detroiter ears. There was the typically beatport euro minimal stage and the harder sounds of the underground stage, the two stages sound good, beatport had a better sound. Keven Saunderson was at the main stage and Jeff Mills closed. Saunderson's set impressed me, I'm not sure why this is the first time I've really been impressed by him--perhaps my taste has changed or the DEMF vibe has changed since 2000 and his style has remained the same and that is what I really appreciate, can't pin-point it. Jeff Mills played as the wizard, it has been a few years since the last Wizard show in Detroit. He played all the classics and a few unknown old school jams. Towards the end he went into early Axis techno and finished with a seven or so minute 909 drum solo, amazing drum tabs. DS On 05/29/2012 03:05 PM, Arturo Lopez wrote: Couldn't make it this year. Amen to that, I almost lost my pocket calculator (true story not just a pun) today before my big week of finals! I'd imagine that horrible feeling when someone runs off with your moog, or a tube or rare fuse breaks or something. I enjoyed their stage show, I guess that was my original point, for me it was more about the light show and their stage presence. So I totally agree with you Kent. At the end of the day it helps put everything in perspective about how far music technology has come. The NPR link that just went out talks about Kraftwerk as being behind synthesizers on stage, but I wonder if they are really just touch-screen computers. On that note, Claude Young played here last weekend on three CD decks. Vinyl purists may cringe but I thought it was pretty cool. I remember when it was easy to single out new local releases in brick mortar Detroit record stores. A few weeks ago I visited the Dance-zone on Gratiot and the record sales were so slow the clerk kept the door locked, lights off and only opened by request. At this point you are correct about the market being saturated; perhaps seek out newer digital local scenes within the midwest. In Grand Rapids it seems like the most successful is whoever is the most social and the 616 veterans are fading into obscurity along with all the old school drama that's kept many down. Just saying: tons of new kids out there downloading music but I still think the best way to connect with them is by going to events and partying, lots of newer scenes in between Detroit and Chicago now. Re: (313) Releasing new vinyl -- advice wanted
With the way the USD is it might be cheaper to manufacture the records in Detroit and import them to Europe. I worked with Ron one time and these are the only notes I kept: Just remember to keep your bass centered and not panning from channel to channel, it can disrupt the needle. In general the shorter the track the louder it can be pressed and 45 rpm is a higher resolution than 33. Acetate will last as long as vinyl so long as keep hand-oil/contamination free from the surface. I like it very much, thanks! I just started one of those pages myself. I have a one minute wav loop at 240 bpm on there for share--I met an old school European acid head from Belgium last week and he was telling me about the 240bpm free parties in France, its my stab at working that fast, I try to keep an open mind--ultimately it would fall into the idm/breakcore category--I did my best to stay in e-minor. --four track mix 100% samples--did my best to quickly make it sound analog. The idea is to compile a ton of complex loops which I would normally expand into slower LP style songs. Re: (313) Netbooks; worth it for music applications?
One thing to keep in mind the original netbooks run linux, not microsoft windows. I use abelton live 3 and renoise for my music production. This set up is very easy on the cpu, I can make some interesting mixes on my g3 400mhz powerbook. Whenever I need to use midi/VSTi I render the tracks in renoise and do the final mix in live 3. Renoise will work with linux too if you have a netbook without a x86 processor--that would be core! -ds - Original Message - From: Arturo Lopez arturo.m.lo...@gmail.com To: Three-One-Three 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, June 23, 2009 12:00 PM Subject: (313) Netbooks; worth it for music applications? Seems like it might be a nice/cheap solution for running ableton/serato/whatever and quite a bit more portable than a larger laptop. Concerned a bit weather a $250 netbook has a beefy enough processor to handle these apps, but then again people were running those apps on slower laptops 3 or 4 years ago. Hmm. I'd imagine you'd have to buy an external soundcard though. Thoughts? -Arturo

I am not there for that reason (bad economy even though I have a job), none of my west michigan friends have accepted my offers to carpool as of yet. Strange for me as I remember us going by the car loads in the early 2000s. I think I will go regardless for the Jeff Mills homecoming, great line up and cheaper than the plaza. I am bummed about missing Jay Denham today but this should cheer me up. Paxahau keeps increasing the stage budgets and so the stages are getting bigger and bigger, to the point of being bloated. I mean, this is not a good thing. The underground (Real Detroit) stage is a disaster. They built a huge elevated square platform in the middle of the floor and constructed an elevated walkway from the side so the DJs and techs can get to the platform. Stacks of bass bins all the way around on the floor under the platform, highs hung from above. Well, it might have been a good idea outside, but it takes up way too much space and makes it sound like you're inside a garbage compactor. The mids are blasting and everything else is slapping back against the walls, floors and ceiling just like always except moreso. Huckaby said afterwards it was horrible playing in there, I think he cut his set short. How long will it take movement/demf (memorial day weekend electronic festival) to have the integrity of the labor day jazz festival? Will techno have to gain the respect that jazz has--like if it gets its own section in public libraries as jazz does before techno is considered something for intellectuals? 20 years or so?? Re: (313) legit mp3 downloads (artists get PAID)?
Bah, guess, i will add my two cents, I look at owning the vinyl as owning the next best thing to a studio master. Problem is vinyl wears out each time it is played. Digital files never wear-out, and if you dj digitally, you don't have to get an acetate made every time a remix/edit is done. Alot easier to play your exclusive tracks on a limited budget, as most of us are on. -so I have been working on digitizing my vinyl collection, but its time consuming. Most of the vinyl I am after is out-of print, some new music I would rather buy a legit mp3 if the music is recorded digitally in the first place. But for the older records which were mastered from reel-to-reel, vinyl is the only answer because one must do there own analog to digital master, and this is where modern djs have a chance to stand out from the rest, the techno-world needs more Larry Levins and Ron Hardys doing there own remixes etc. On Jun 23, 2005, at 11:02 AM, fab. wrote: Records are great, but they just don't compare to the convenience of keeping things in digital format. That's why i have embraked on the gargantuan task of ripping all my vinyl to mp3 - digital files ARE easier to use, although for me there is nothing like vinyl. the sound, the feel, the smelland the packaging. fab.

(313) FUSE-IN REPORT
Yesterday I hung around my hotel until around 530ish, there was a free party here at the pontchartrain and for about an hour they had free redbull--and smart water that lasted longer. When I was there Keith Stoll was listed at that time slot. The free drinks and urb magazine was a nice bonus... better than tea and usa today. We had to buy wrist bands at cobo hall, I didn't go on friday, because by the time we got settled the acts i wanted to see, had played. Sunday was the first time that there were no techno acts on smaller stages that i was interested in. The tronic marco carola ben sims misstress barbara possie were in the underground stage--packed but not my style at all. Seems like there is a new bread of raver trash in the midwest... Weird vibe this year, this is the first year where flashing pacifiers were sold like at a sports event or circus, vendors going up and down the heavy foot traffic areas, selling that junk. I would not call it a rave, but a circus. Model 500 played live classics, which was very entertaining but lacking new material. Redman made an appearance and did a few cuts, before introducing kevin saunder --then i went back to the hotel and called it a night because I got enough rave at substance in the broderick tower. I wish Carl Craig was the one behind it, not kevin!!! I still had alot of fun, a good 10$ music event. I would detail more but i must pack and check-out.
(313) saturday night detroit fuse-in weekend blurp
I am staying at the ponch with a view of heart plaza, I did not go yesterday, missed the acts i wanted to see, and we ended up watching the festival from the hotel window from the 15th floor, fuse-in looked like they made money, towards the late night the plaza filled up. The Substance, friction detroit party was dope, it was like taking a time machine back ten years with the music from today. Two floors, 4 rooms, black plastic rave decor. daniel bell, kero, and mike huckaby were my favorites for the night. --Left the party around 6 am.

I have a tracker setup on my server that can be used for this purpose. The good part of bit torrent is that as long as someone sticks around to seed the file, you don't necessarily have to be the only one sharing it out the whole time. as a former nicotine user, ssX is newer and better. 1-it is updated on a weekly basis on average in the builds directory, and its native to os x. The only feature that is missing is remembering a search like in nicotine, and the things i like feature. It is alot nicer on the eyes, i have my windows transparent black. It is also very easy to install. I prefer it over any other version including the pc. A downside to nicotine is that the programer is working on museek for linux and not on nicotine.
