Who is this Dale character? this dale character is none other than big poppa dale lawrence, one of the more up and coming ghettoelectrobootytech djs in the detroit area. prior releases include spank my flabby white ass you bad boy, thats not protein in your SOBE, and shake your body until all your internal organs are damaged. his next releasesupercalifragilisticexpialabooty should be out this fall ...oh yeah, he also does this theorem thing...but im not too sure what its all about *shrug*. rob ;) Meanwhile, in 2009 (313) news, Detroit Grand Pubahs blew my brains out last weekend, and tonight Telefon Tel Aviv did the same. The Pubahs were out here for a rare (first time since I saw them in 2001!) LA appearance. Times have changed and Andy Toth is no longer in tow; Paris' manager from Holland is the Man Behind The (Old Man) Mask nowadays. They had some sound problems (mic missing, owner of the building demanding the Funktion One rig be turned almost off, etc.) but before an impromptu essaying of vintage Pubahs material with a jet-lagged and drunk Paris on the mic, he essentially laptop DJed one of the best sets I've heard in ages. After having been bored sh-tless the previous weekend by Mnml it was more than a welcome change. A good time was had by all. Tonight Joshua brought his remaining half of Telefon Tel Aviv to town after a long absence from the left coast. They were amazing. Imagine Depeche Mode, Death In June, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark and M83 trapped in an elevator. Really loud. Then I dashed across town to catch John Tejada at Compression, playing to a 2/3rds full room. This just after he played to a thousand people in Berlin. No love from the home team, I tell ya ... - Greg
(313) 9/9/99
Today is the 10th anniversary of Lynn Hasty's 9-9-99 Public Space event at the Park Plaza hotel in LA, featuring Detroit's 7th City label. Tempus fugit, eh? It was a Thursday night. The lineup was: John Tejada (DJ) DBX (Dan Bell) (live) Claude Young (DJ) Anthony Shake Shakir (live) John Tejada (finishing the night by playing a DAT of his then-new tracks) One of the most amazing nights of Techno I've ever been witness to. The kicker? All of 60-odd people showed up. Lynn (who is John Tejada's fiancée) gave up on putting on gigs shortly thereafter. With a turnout like that, who could blame her? With support from all quarters (Dettmann + Klock, Laurent Garnier, Jeff Mills, and Speedy J to name a few) the label collapses techno's boundaries and rebuilds the genre in its own unique image. As stalwarts of the hugely influential label Downwards, Function and Regis have pushed the dance music envelope for over a decade. Sandwell District however is a beast of its own, a label of the here and now. Pushing new boundaries with each EP, Sandwell has earned label of the month in both DJ Mag and Resident Advisor and caused waves within the industry. Re: Re: (313) Business Automotive industry 'If General Motors were to lose out, I think Detroit would go under
Joel Gajewski wrote: As sad as it is for life in Detroit, the US auto industry has not exactly learned any lessons from the 70's/80's when foreign cars started picking up in terms of sales. Plus, they neglect the American market in terms of style, performance and most importantly quality. They should have known that their business plans based on large trucks and SUV's in the 1990's would only last for so long. I'm not from Detroit, so Detroiters, feel free to tell me to STFU. But I do have this observation to make: I just came back from a 2 1/2 week trek to Tanzania Zanzibar. Discounting the usual big Land Rover and Land Cruiser vehicles that are the staples of the safari tour co.'s, when it comes to passenger cars and non-commercial vehicles, I'd say that at least 95% of the total vehicles I saw in that category in the country were Japanese. I don't recall seeing a single GM or Ford vehicle there at all. While being driven to my hotel in Dar es Salaam, we fell in behind a vehicle from the American Embassy. It was a (consumer) Land Cruiser. Oh the irony. It seems so simple to fix - the Big 3 should switch to making good, cheap (so a lot of the population can afford it) reliable small cars that get good gas mileage and that're easy to fix, and do this globally so that an ecosystem can spring up around it and ensure that people can get them fixed easily if they have problems. But at the same time, discounting their world-wide presence for a moment, the US automakers are at the whims of the American consumer. If suddenly tomorrow GM and Ford and Chrysler sent reps to Tanzania and discovered the Japanese blanket coverage there and tried to emulate it, what if consumers back home won't buy them? What if, now that gas is down (to $2.65 for Premium out here in LA; undoubtedly less in other places, and obviously less than that for Regular) a bit, the usual American penchant for overconsumption kicks back in and they decide they want their guzzling SUVs and huge trucks again? The Big 3 are like a lumbering beast, unable to turn on a dime and do the right thing for the environment and the economy, but it's the American buying public that are equally to blame. I don't have an answer to their ills - it seems like a classic Catch-22. I wish I did - for the sake of all my Detroit friends whose livelihoods are affected either directly or indirectly by the Auto Industry. And so that people can go back to going to shows - and support Detroit's music scene. - Greg

People come in from all over for Coachella. They pay $290 to get fry baked for 3 days. Burning Man is up over $200. Sonar and the other Euro festivals are up to $75 a day and higher. Look, I love Detroit people and I know the economy's depressed. But 3 days of great music for under $50 total is ridiculously cheap. End of story.
