Re: [313] jazz...
In the book "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: The history fo the Disc Jockey" the terms rave and jockey, etc are discussed in relation to their origin. Rave was merely a term for all night party, it first being used around the 20s i think. So, the probability of a radio announcer saying such, would be pretty good, i think. - Original Message - From: "darw_n" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, January 11, 2001 3:32 PM Subject: [313] jazz... > got this off of the MW list, thought some of you might think it to be an > interesting comment... > > From: "pixie" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > > > --- "Hugh G. Well, I can help with web stuff no problem... are we going to have hyperreal host it or somewhere else? I can also easily write a login and upload facility for people who want to add their own webpages. We can have an index of all the sites linked, and a search facility and whatnot, no problem... I have space on a server under my own domain, but we can get a mask like connect.to/313 or something. Or do we want this to be bigger than just 313? a more global name? Re: [313] Detroit Techno & Art
Into this techno related art discussion i would also like to throw chuck close... upon seeing his work, the first thing that i thought (after "wow") was how much it looked like music to me... how the individual pieces containing their own design all come together to make one large image... and from afar it look like on piece, and you don't see all of the pieces until examined more closely... also, the methodology of how most electronic music is created, piece by piece and then assembled to form a whole... also, after becoming paralyzed i think that he had to use some technology to get him around his works or a computer if i remember correctly... the exhibit was a few years ago, so i don't remember the details about the work creation... http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/Exhibitions/Close/default.htm if you go to the link and click on techniques, and then oil, you will see a detail of what i mean... i am referring to most of his work since 1986.. also... bill viola would have to be at the top of my list for integrating art and technology... as far as drawing a connection between rothko and techno, to me it seems obvious that the hard shapes and lines and color contrasts have blurred edges, which i think is reflected in the subtlety of a lot of techno... oftentimes the most important part of a song is the subtle one, not the immediate kick or melody, but the slight changes that merge the two into a piece... ok, enough art crap from me... peace, holly
Re: [313] Good Thread!!
Well... my most *treasured* records would surely be: 1. ron trent- altered states which can bring me to tears 2. rob hood - moveable parts which changed my view of the world my rarest records... no way back and move your body original pressings just for the record another record that changed my life was dj sneak the blue funk ep... and is one of my most cherished... i owned three copies (gave one away) and have another as backup in case anything happens to the first... i have a couple like this... i'm a freak... when i love something, i have to have multiples -- you never know what could happen! peace, holly

Now I don't think he'd say that to a guy somehow. it has happened to me so many times, that i walk into a record store, ask if they have some new release i am waiting for, only to hear, "we don't have that on cd, only on vinyl." finally once i responded: "what, do you think just because i'm a chick i can't be a dj?" it's a pain. but i have found that once people know who you are, the discrimination is gone. i get the respect i deserve from those who know. as far a hard and minimal techno female fans go, i think there are fewer than males because of the aggressiveness of the music. i was really into hard minimal stuff a few years ago, but now i pop in a mixtape and it's too hard for me... maybe i'm just getting old, but i always have associated that music with testosterone... i will always show up to hear a live hard techno dj though... that shit i always get into.. peace, holly

what is techno
yes but the truth of the matter is that if NOONE can give an exact definition of techno then how can techno be an exact form of music?? dustin == techno is whatever i feel it is... also: techno has no snare rolls, big buildups and breakdowns or that heavily delayed goa shit. techno is 4/4 techno is whatever we say it is.

i totally agree... when i look back and think of a set... i think of how it made me feel, as opposed to what exact track they played... and that is what i think matters... besides the fact that i'm too much of an airhead to remember exact records... just this last saturday i dug the only thing out my pocket that i had - a bandaid - and had to write the name of the record on it because i knew i wouldn't remember... 313 real audio sets
Well, everyone... it's 98% sure that I lost all of the sets from the december 313 list party. About 5 days after I got the site up, my isp went down. (Not for everyone, just for me, and you can be sure i was their *top* priority.) I was out of service for 45 (yes, 45 days). Then, last Monday, May 22, I finally got my service restored. On Wednesday, I had planned to announce the ressurection of the site. But what should happen upon walking into my apartment? THE BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH and one ticking drive. Yep, you guessed it, the drive that i use for my server died. And do you know how much they want for data recovery? $1500 to $4500 ! That's outrageous. So, unless anyone wants to donate the money to get disk recovery for that drive, or i happen upon some data recovery guy and bat my eyelashes enough, the sets are gone. I'm really sorry. I feel like such a schmuck for volunteering to host the site, and then having it die, and then having it *really* die. If Josh ever has access to a highspeed ftp server, and can put the sets back up, I can d/l, convert and put them up again. (But this time I will put them up with a realaudio isp) But, on the bright side, at least we have a lot of real audio from DEMF to listen to now... again, sorry i'm a schmuck... this kind of stuff always happens to me... i'm the glitch queen... ya, good plan to go into programming, huh? wise career decision there, holl... ok, i digress... peace, holly

People I've mentioned so far are: Wendy Carlos, Diana Ross, Martha Wash, First Choice, Donna Summer, Grace Jones, Chaka Kahn. I am also aware of Andrea Parker, Marusha, Kemistry + Storm, the Punisher, DJ Rap, Saskia, Sandra Collins, DJ Irene, etc. I know I am overlooking a lot of people... so... anyone... label manager, producer, vocalist, performing artist... whatever. Women in electronic music... or dance music... or electronic dance music. Any ideas? Re: (313) Rave betty Barbie and DJ Ken
I do think people look at the 'old days' with rose coloured specs. As I recall it has always been the case that there were people on the scene who were only in it for the most superficial reasons and who knew nothing about the music, from 1988 (when I first discovered the music) right through 'til now. Re: (313) 312 list ?
ok... i can't intersperse comments very effectively with this email client we have at my office... so here goes... stephen has made a great point: the 312 discussion that goes on here does not have to stop. I just think it would be nice to have an additional resource for 312 information and a separate outlet for discussion. i also believe that a 312 list will attract a different audience, as there are those that are into chicago more than detroit and may not be aware that the 313 list has chicago content and are therefore not currently subscribed. unless you want to change this to be the 313/312 list, i don't see how that audience would ever be attracted to a purely 313 list just based on its description. another one of my main reasons for desiring a 312 list is for discussion of events and happenings in the area. currently, the only postings we get here of 312 events are when detroit people are playing in chi town. now i know that i don't live there... but you can't blame me for wanting to live vicariously in another city... dc is pretty bland... as far as the "additional noise" issue... if you are currently content with the amount of 312 content on this list, then don't subscribe to the new list. and many people here are already subbed to multiple lists, so i know you can manage your mail... peace, h stephen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> on 04/06/2000 05:31:49 AM To:Otto Koppius <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, 313@hyperreal.org cc:(bcc: Holly C MacDonald-Korth/IRM/FRBOG/US) SubjectRe: (313) 312 list ? : Otto Koppius wrote: > Holly C MacDonald-Korth wrote: > > > > I don't see what the big deal is. if you want both, subscribe to both. > > > > what's the difference? > > For one, a difference is that then you'll get *twice* the amount of > noise messages, even though the s/n ratio may be relatively low on both > lists. then subscribe to the *digest* version you list freak! (313) people get fucked..
believe me... people get fucked for money everywhere. however, this happens less frequently in highly developed markets where legal channels are most likely to be used as recourse. the legal system in this country helps give people the ocnfidence that they can do business. i believe that many nations remain in the third world becuase they don't have a judicial system, or any other system that they can trust will enforce contracts. contracts are the basis of our economy and ease of movement of goods. however, in an industry like the music industry, or art or design, where those involved believe the counterparty is not likely to sue (or more specifically, have the ability to outdo their lawyers), the tendency to screw people is higher. case in point: jaguar. peace, holly [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 03/16/2000 11:24:23 AM To:[EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org cc:(bcc: Holly C MacDonald-Korth/IRM/FRBOG/US) SubjectRE: (313) Dave Clarke & Bush : You are right, you shouldn't take shit from anyone. From the standpoint of an artist: Mixshows do *not* sell records. I'm partial to the old days when DJ's would play tracks and tell you what the hell they'd just played between tracks, they'd maybe give you some background on the artist and the label ect befor or after. that's much more helpful to the artist than simple blending a continuos mix of faceless anonymous tracks. So if this actually occured and Richie never actually made it to Detroit then (1995) - what is the basis of references to the dissent between the UR camp and Richie's Plus 8. Why did Eddie Fowlkes talk about Mad Mike and Richie in the manner that he did. And what led to the ensuing issue being resolved between the 2 camps? A_Zed == The events to which you are referring, between Detroit proper and +8 are much older than 1995... the release of "The Future Sound of Detroit" in 1990 spurred the conflict. ^1 peace, holly _ 1. Re: (313) Re: Plus 8 v UR
I am not sure to what you refer to below, but it could be the tax issue. In 1995, after the Oklahoma City bombing, security at the borders was greatly increased. Rich was trying to cross the border and was stopped and questioned about his music equipment. He had tickets on him because he was on his way to NY and the border patrol deduced that he was performing in the US without paying taxes... and Rich ended up not being allowed (or maybe just not wanting to) return to the states until it was straightened out. Re: (313) Let the hype begin: Winter Music Conference
Which to bring up the point of hotels. The Winter Music Conference powers that be decided to book the conference @ the raddison rather than the Fountainebleu this year. This is an even worse location in than last year. The raddison is at roughly 67th and collins. The Fountainebleu is at 44th and collins, which I stayed at last year. And it was a total pain to get from there to the clubs. You really do not want to stay at either of these places. Rather I would recommend finding something south of lincoln road (22nd). -> Not to nitpick, but Lincoln Rd is btwn 16 & 17th Also, I went last year and didn't bother with the actualy con pass, and had a perfectly fine time. It runs $275 I believe this year, and unless you have interest in attending panels. --> Being a longtime vet of the conference without ever having a pass, i have to say, it really is convenient to have one as getting into a lot of events without one is costly and a pain in the ass. also, hotel security was rough on those of us who didn't have one... anyone have the word on any gigs yet? Haven't bought my plane tix yet, but planning to... peace, holly
