(313) mix WNUR chicago: Guest DJ Paul Hammond, UK
Sonic Sunset 8 Sept 2006: Guest DJ Paul Hammond, UK Fridays 9:30pm - 12:30am, 89.3 FM WNUR Chicago Download from http://SonicSunset.com Catching up w/ our second to last live radio broadcast, more special programs: Part 1 An deep cross-genre guest mix this week from Paul Hammond, label maestro of Real Soon records UK, also known for being half of the ambient pioneering duo Ultramarine. Paul has spent his career honing his incredible ear for mood and rhythm, creating a wonderful tension between warm soul and unsettling darkness -- in his own music and what he carefully curates for his label. He has a deep knowledge of post-punk and ambient music from its formative years and his mix for us crisscrosses the decades and styles, truly an environmental and emotional listening experience. We've got nothing but respect for this likeminded long time listener who also has his own excellent radio programs for download, check them out at http://realsoon.net -- Thank you Paul! Part 2 If you fused the grit of Theo Parrish, the original mechanical warmth of Larry Heard, and the otherworldliness of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works - you'd arrive close to the sound of Newworldaquarium. We take a listen to his music recorded under various aliases, over a range of years (1993 - 2005), on a number of labels (Delsin, New Religion, Peacefrog, Planet E, etc.). Leading up to that, Dave rolls out a few show favorites, along with ethereal dubstep from Burial, and sweet ambience from Marsen Jules. (313) Mix WNUR Chicago: B12 Records special + important news
Sonic Sunset 1 Sept 2006: B12 Records Special: Soundtrack of Space Fridays 9:30pm - 12:30am, 89.3 FM WNUR Chicago Download from http://SonicSunset.com First an announcement: Due to big changes in our geography and lives, Sonic Sunset is now no longer being broadcast live on 89.3 FM Chicago radio. We'd like to thank WNUR for giving us airtime every Friday night for damn near 10 years! This is a bittersweet but ultimately positive evolution for us. We'll release a few of our last remaining on-air shows, and then continue to record mixes (less frequently) that we'll put up on SonicSunset.com. We discuss this live at the end of Part 1. Thanks to all of our global listeners who download, you've encouraged us to continue even without a local radio broadcast. Now, on with the music, 2 very special shows we think you'll find worth the wait: Part 1 Explore the depths of Berlin's Rhythm Sound extended family of labels, focusing especially on their Main Street imprint – for deep house and dark, eerie detached layers of dub traces. Playing the more downtempo shades of Basic Channel sound, hear the best expression of dub and modern techno today. Fifteen years after they first pioneered it, their unique sound has proven timeless. Part 2 A retrospective set of London's B12 Records. We've been wanting to do this show for many years, and decided no better time in space than now: Expressions of the Future as viewed in 1991 from B12 in London, through a lens that built on Detroit's original foundation, but angled the sound into a unique British unknown. Michael Golding Steve Rutter crafted this vision under numerous artist names on their B12 imprint, releasing one of the pillars of the Artificial Intelligence era, Electro Soma (primarily a collection of their early 12s), on Warp Records. We love the 12 philosophy they adopted, with super-limited colored vinyl among an already- limited total run. The records have gorgeous cutting jobs with massive etchings before and after the grooves, not unlike the look of UR/Red Planet records from that same era. B12 was a key first step for UK's clinical twist on soulful circuitry, we dug deep to play many of their originals we had. Part 1 Matt MacQueen http://sonicsunset.org/ci_20060901_matt.mp3 Phillip Charles - Deconstruction Of A New Era - Sun Ra: The Myth Lives On (Kindred Spirits) Vainqueur - Lyot (Reshape) - (Basic Channel) Rhythm Sound - We Been Troddin (Burial Mix) Rhythm Sound - Trace (Rhythm Sound) Round One - I'm Your Brother [Chicago's Twisted Mix] (Main Street) Round Two - New Day [Club version] (Main Street) Round Three - feat. New music this week from Detroit's South South Million, and Junior Boys turn in a plaintive dark sparkler from their new album. Part 2 We broadcast a classic mix from DJ Beppe Loda, a founding italo disco DJ who played in Chicago for one night on a mini US tour. A pioneer of DJ culture and resident at Italy's legendary Typhoon club from 1980 to 1987, Loda has been searching for sounds off the beaten path since his first gig in 1973. Playing to as many as 7,000 people a night, producing in excess of 200 mix tapes and pioneering the italo synth sound with his MC1 project (just reissued on Synthonic), he has just about done it all. His Afro style (also called Cosmic or Cosmic Afro) is as disorienting, funky and inspiring now as it was then. (w/ former 313'ers Dave Walker, Teep, and _TechnoRebels_ book author Dan Sicko) Just caught up on this. Very promising site. Looking forward to hearing your collective ruminations more frequently! Now to grab that radio show. I think you guys may have outdone yourselves by the looks of that tracklist. thanks tristan! yeah it's fun to sort of 'take public' the kinds of music discussions we've been having (about electronic music, genre- crashing / freeform mixing, social music tools, etc.) between the authors for 6+ years via email, yet now doing it on moodmat.com where others can contribute/debate too. really it's about co-discovery. and hope you enjoy the mix, mine was admittedly a little ambitious but i'll let you be the judge ;) peace

Re: (313) prototype 909 live
wow, no kidding, that's great. this CD - Live '93-'95 - is a great taste of the raw/live PA experience. http://e.discogs.com/release/51094 OBtrivia: I took some shots of them at Even Furthur that ended up in the CD jacket http://e.discogs.com/viewimages?what=Robid=51094 just such a sea of gear, cables, sweat and totally raw/underground vibe was jaw dropping for me at the time. They EARNED their fans the hard way: they toured their asses off with all that kit too. Big raves and also tiny crap venues in rural places with dripping tents and flakey generators, they just wanted to jam by any means necessary. Would be interesting to see if techno fans nowdays can even still relate to that kind of a set, I hope so. 1 Intro (1:19) 2 Babyhead, Providence, RI (7:17) 3 'Cybertech 2,' NY, NY (6:13) 4 Scranton, PA (8:43) 5 Axis, Boston, MA (6:03) 6 'Mecha,' NY, NY (9:01) 7 Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ (2:33) 8 'Even Further,' WI (6:05) 9 Philadelphia, PA (10:19) peace On Apr 26, 2006, at 7:57 PM, /0 wrote: all three of them, no laptops 2am-330am -Joe - Original Message - From: Kent Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: list 313 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, April 26, 2006 8:23 PM Subject: Re: (313) prototype 909 live Whoa. On Mar 7, 2006, at 9:23 AM, Robert Taylor wrote: I think that's DJ Pierre - Atom Bomb yeah i think that's it, might have also been called Doomsday. wicked track, dark warehouse material, sort of a throwback to that era of noisy/scary chicago warehouse material that got called all lumped into the theme of guilt trip house. Alongside big tracks like Hercules - 7 Ways, Sleazy D - I've Lost Control, and Bam Bam - Where is your child. Re: (313) my morning mischief
sorry for the non-timely reply, finally got time to get back to this thread On Dec 6, 2005, at 2:52 PM, /0 wrote: not dancing isn't a fault. if someone pays the same money you did to get into an event which focuses on AUDIO, is your night really diminished because that person doesnt want to dance? do you require that sporting event attendees cheer and scream throughout the game/match? i figured that would stir up some kind of response. Of course it's a combo. You are coming from a 100% me centric view of the party, not a we centric view (which i realize is basically extinct in this country, but it wasn't always that way). I think the difference is in the things you list, it's a clear performer (rockstar) audience (adoring spectators) relationship. in a soccer game, people can't run from the stands onto the field and participate, whether they cheer or not. If you regard a DJ like an arena rockstar, where you just watch them rock out, standing in place - then you're reinforcing that the crowd are just along for the ride, instead of being active particpants in a special event that THEY HELP CREATE how the event feels. A reason, in fact, to attend at all, other than the person on stage. LIke when underground parties were ALTERNATIVES to mainstream nightclubs and rock concerts (where there is typically a more brutal caste system, you had to pay more, dress codes, velvet ropes, etc.) where in contrast underground discos and raves were more about inclusion and participation in making the night, not just spectators who paid to gawk at one person. now of course some events are more tuned to participation than others, i was just making a statement that i think the what do you bring to the party element is dying/dead, unfortunately. at a music-based that plays music specifically designed to make people dance (or think, but STILL it's physical-driven music, played in physically-driven way), there was a time when the crowd WAS the party. The DJ didn't make the party, they just provided the soundtrack. I went to early hawtin parties in detroit / eastern market where he and other DJs would play behind a screen. This was more rare but it happened. But the people controlled the vibe, the fun, the reason you went. It was about what can I add , not what can I get. THis is getting more about party dymanics, (and away from a more 313 topic) but in the not-too-distant-past, the whole temporary autonomous zone that older parties had that made them more special that just typical nightclub live PAs. I'm talking about an underground thing here. A dark room and a feeling and all that good stuff. if the music sucks but everyone else is dancing, are you happy? well, probably moreso than if the music sucked and everyone just stood around with mouth agape. but of course music is the reason people want to dance, so it's hard to have one without the other. not picking on anyone in particular, but people complaining that xy and z wasnt dancing seems ridiculous to me. and thousands of people standing around watching one of the best Djs in the world play dance music for people to dance to seems ridiculous to me. guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one if it ruins your night, you're too damn sensitive i'm probably too damn sensitive in general ;) but i never said it ruined anyone's night. i just think parties are more fun with the participants who understand they are an active role in making the event as fun as much (or more than) the performer who is there to provide a sonic backdrop to their fun. giving the party to the people, not the person on stage, who is just one of a thousand other party participants. music appreciation is ultimately an individual choice, people will do what comes to them - watch or sleep or jack their body. I just prefer more active participants than you that help create something more special than what amounts to watching a DVD. peace -- MM http://sonicsunset.com

I feel the same way I guess as the local music scene of late rarely plays host to any Detroit talent, largely favoring and booking the dj's who play the current so called minimal sound instead. But then again, SF has been a trend following city lately. LATELY!?! ;) But yeah i know you what you mean about people calling certain styles of boring click-house as minimal. It kills me when people use that word to describe 2-3 hour DJ yawnfests of the same boring, quasi-glitch-but-not-quite-ACTUALLY-funky lean house tracks. The tracks are never as interesting enough on their own to make a really great set... well usually, anyway. It's a dis-service to the word.. minimal used to mean it had a mental, introspective element. Less was more. (Now, apparently, less is even less?) Minimal was pure techno. Now, I realize that it couldn't last forever because making GOOD minimal techno is/was a lost art. Rob Hood's Minimal Nation, Internal Empire and stuff on M-Plant. Jeff Mills Growth and Cycle 30 records on Axis, some Shake tracks, the stuff on Molecular records, the early Dan Bell material (which Kompakt basically took that sound an made hundreds more records off of it, but none quite as good). There are bright spots of course, but also the 20 more labels that sprang up to imitate even that sound... eesh) With a good minimal record, at least the way I was taught, it doesn't NEED anything else in it, because every trace element of what's in it is so damn funky to begin with. A good minimal record made you a little freaked out, there was a headspace element to it. Even look at something like Basic Channel - Phylps Trak II a looped groove, not much in it... minimal even... but OH so funky. An old head Dr. Attaman once famously described (probably on 313) upon hearing Movable Parts that Rob Hood has the power to make teeny-tiny atoms funky. Jeff Mills Growth and Cycle 30 records on Axis, some Shake tracks, the stuff on Molecular records, some Dopplereffekt, even some F.U.S.E., the early Accelerate Records Dan Bell material (which Kompakt basically took that sound an made hundreds more records off of it, but none quite as good). There are bright spots of course, but also the 20 more labels that sprang up to imitate even that sound... eesh) With a good minimal record, at least the way I was taught, it doesn't NEED anything else in it, because every trace element of what's in it is so acutely funky to begin with. It has funk and actual INTEREST and appeal in it's very DNA. I'm sorry I'm just not hearing that in the truckload of minimal glitch/cut-up/tech-house I've heard in the last couple years. Same guys, they just sent me a CDR with 3 tracks, to appear on a forthcoming release on ThirdEar. No idea of official release date. All 3 are great and IMHO a couple of them well more abstract than anything on the Psychostasia release. Will appeal to the Theo and KDJ and 'beat down' fans who like to follow that sound clear off the deep end... Re: (313) italo reissues
funny thread to catch up to a few days later. taste is such a subjective thing. yeah most italo i guess (esp, for me, the stuff beyond 1984) is crapola and over the top cheese. but the great ones are great. early stuff very analog drums, overdriven, synthesized, futuristic themes.. crazy synth sounds. It's weird enough (and to an American... alien enough, culturally) to be interesting. like any genre, (ESPECIALLY techno... ) most things in a flood of releases are bad, and a very small amount of cream eventually rises to the top. 95% of it is pretty bad, like laugh out loud bad. . but that's the same with all art IMHO.. of any kind. People take dance music too seriously IMHO... you have to laugh at things that are just ridiculous. there's plenty of fun to be had... i also like to discover/uncover the oddball italo cuts or b-sides that are less well known but also fun to mix with house or techno. some of these are priced at a $2 but are worth more to me because of what i can do with them, or they represent a period of electronic music development i feel is still largely being rediscovered by people who now consider themselves Techno.OR WHATEVER... yet some of even the bad stuff has a certain charm i hold dear in the way i like synthesized, beat-box driven crude early (raw feeling, underproduced) dance music. it's innocent, tiny labels, ridiculous lyrics that make no sense, etc. some of it is just laugh out loud funny to me.. but if the music is kicking, i can deal and it makes it all the more interesting to me. i can understand some Europeans not feeling it because you heard it all along as kids, etc. It was bad radio pop and the worst of it probably tainted the quality of the early years. From an American's perspective (i think there's but a handful of us left on 313 ;) hehe... anyway here in american it hit chicago (and even detroit - most notably there Robotnik's 'Problems d'Amour'... later edited rather lamely by carl craig, but i digress) a handful of years AFTER it was already stale over in europe, and here in chicago it influenced a whole mess o' chicago house producers who liked the beats and (to their ears)... Chip E has said his early stuff was trying to imitate the italo stuff he was hearing... funny. good article in Keep On about that if you can find it. Tons of old DeepHousePage mixes by Hotmix 5, Farley, etc. have italo tracks in them. Just for some perspective, it just worked with what else they were playing at the time, and imports back then made a DJ more exclusive because they were harder to get your hands on. but all that shouldn't make you LIKE to listen to italo, everyone likes what they like. but you should at least understand it's historical importance to dance music coming from chicago and detroit. i think being from UK or europe a lot of that is - AHEM - lost in translation. this was in an era when the dance music world was not globalized to the extent it is now, when you couldn't go google and order a record from some dealer or auction site.. records were imported and a small number of italo would come in and DJs here in chicago scooped it up because it was WEIRD.. and it was robotic yet had elements of disco.. some had terrible raps, etc. (Morgan put some of those on his Unclassics CD.. for example... italo raps are an even more alien species of weirdness!). But many beat tracks of those became blueprints for basic house drumbox rhythms. that's the stuff i gravitate towards anyway... I also get them in filthy warehouses for a few bucks each.. I can't stop liking it just because others choose to pay hundreds for it. People pay way more than for original pressings of motown soul 45s and even weirder stuff so when there is limited original art of any kind, collectors spring up. don't let confuse monetary value with artistic merit to your own ears -- there's a huge difference. A record is only worth what someone is willing to pay... as is the case with rare paintings, sculpture, gemstones, etc. How much someone paid for it shouldn't affect your ability to judge it's artistic merit on it's own account. In one final note about italo.. like any genre of music i feel it's best mixed with other genres that have similar elements but are yet still different. I would tire of an 100% italo set just like i would tired of a 100% techno set, 100% acid house, etc.. it's all about throwing these curveballs into a mix and adding some variety- the better / more fun italo cuts are are weirdo things that don't sound like anything else and have a lot of energy. I've been in a dark room when Theo Parrish drop the odd italo cut here and there and it's just a fantastic accent mark on whatever else he's playing before and after it. It's not all terrible cheese, it's just early dance music that sounds weird enough to be funky... or whatever. Ken - finally about you liking

Re: (313) Re: Galoppierende Zuversicht or Nobody Listens to Techno
yeah fair... massive connections between house and techno, and that is the way i like it too! But just for the record on a historical timeline, the earliest detroit techno things like A Number of Names and Cybotron and early Model 500 took more from european sounds than they did chicago house, and pre-dated a lot of chicago house actually. Clear (1982 !) was not a debt nor offshoot of chicago house. Chicago house (then and even now) still holds disco deep down in it's heart, where when Juan started out there was moreso a self-conscious rejection of that that kind of ethos in his early work. I know you know this Kent, but just in the interest of the public record :) semi related, came across this interesting bit of writing about music owing to Kraftwerk, Clear was on it... naturally http://www.sci.fi/~phinnweb/krautrock/mojo-kraftinfluences.html peace On Jul 5, 2005, at 2:18 PM, Kent Williams wrote: Techno post-dates Chicago House; Dan Sicko mentions in Techno Rebels that Derrick May and others among the originators made frequent trips to Chicago in the 80s to get records. Maybe 'offshoot' doesn't do justice to the creativity of Detroit artists, but it's not like there's no connection between house and techno. For that matter, there's a lot of Chicago house tracks that sound pretty techno, and Detroit Techno records that sound pretty housey. In fact if there's a dominant style among DJs in Iowa it would be to make no distinction between Chicago and Detroit records. I hear house DJs play techno and vice versa every time I go out. This isn't about sampling someone, or stealing an idea or a drumtrack or track title. This is putting out someone's work as if it was your own... it's a different, more disgusting kind of fraud and misrepresentation. It's like signing your name to someone else's painting when you didn't touch the brush or even stretch the canvas. People should be forwarding these emails to Peacefrog. Ask them address these charges on their website. Make them change the label to give Jamie credit. I would love to hear their official response, surely they have one by now. They are heads, they probably knew the rumors, and took Joe at his word I suppose? It's less hassle for them, they just want the cash from the reissue I suppose. And they're such great tracks! This is at the end about accountability. Jamie and others should email Peacefrog and tell them what you think, the global techno community is large, but everyone knows everyone through one of two people anyway... this is a small scene. I love the LHAS stuff and I hope Jamie keeps doing what he's doing with his label... I suppose the ultimate revenge would be for him to just release all those tracks under his own name on his own label... then we all buy THAT version. I love the tracks too, I would rather that Jamie gets the credit (and money) for his art. Clinically Inclined 3 June 2005 Fridays 9:30pm - 12:30am, 89.3 FM WNUR Chicago http://SonicSunset.com Broadcast on the eve of the Kraftwerk tour stop in Chicago, Matt hosts a full career retrospective of their work. Agruably the most forward-thinking and influential pioneers in synthesized electro-pop music, the four composers working from Dusseldorf, Germany have had their music famously described as so stiff it's funky. Kraftwerk created sonic blueprints and themes that paved the way for early Hip-Hop, House and Techno to follow in their robotic footsteps. After an intro of Detroit-y downtempo, hear Kraftwerk's decades of influence still every bit as relevant to modern electronic music today, fusing mechanized beats with emotional melodies and beautifully simple pop arrangements. Part 1 chill Detroit warm-up, then Kraftwerk begins Soul Circuit - Ordinary Mind - Don't Spoil the Tension (Sirkus) Soul Circuit - Not Gilded - Don't Spoil the Tension (Sirkus) Sean Deason - Interlude - Allegory Metaphor (Intuit Solar) Sean Deason - Zig [feat. Re: (313) New Richie Hawtin Mix CD: DE9: Transition
okay i thought i mailed this last week but it got stuck in my outbox somehow. so excuse the lateness not out to bash Rich in particular, but more-so this lame philosophizing. On May 26, 2005, at 2:22 PM, Aleš Hieng / Zergon wrote: The electronic music world is incredibly difficult to stay ahead of. What is branded cool one week, might be slated as dirty the next. and we should all be fearful of being judged by our techno peers to be only at the bleeding edge of cool, because every 60 seconds a new microtrend in techno has born and died. And god forbid you weren't there to get a record (errr, audiofile) released in time to ride that microtrend and be leading a pack that will inevitably devour you as they themselves seek to be EVEN MORE TECHNO than their predecessor, even if for an instant. yuck. i don't think many techno artists worth a second listen operate this way. Endless techniques are used by artists and their management to try to keep themselves beyond mainstream musical comprehension, and therefore slipping from the razor’s edge where legends can be crafted. and where, without a foundation in any form or underpinning substance or soul, it all just collapses under the weight of it's own technical process overhead. it isn't music anymore, it's just simply technology without anything else as a vehicle for artistic expression. in short, music produced in this manner may make scientists and studio engineers swoon, but on the other hand it also simply disappears right up it's own rear end. poof! Legends can be crafted when the artistic product endures for some reason or another beyond a millisecond, it's not just another forgettable technical masturbation. Whether that applies to this work remains to be seen. i'll listen with an open mind but this press release gets at the whole problem i have with techno being so technical and 'of the second' it becomes utterly disposable. the second you've heard it it's suddenly irrelevant because another production method has replaced it. when all that's there is technique, pure technique, once that novelty wears off there's nothing underneath it. what is the real artistic statement? Reminds me of the Emperor's New Clothes. I shouldn't read press releases. -- MM http://sonicsunset.com
