RE: New Hood releases
Yeah I get that it makes sense for other labels to put the music out due to costs etc. The comment was more about the fact Hood rarely puts music out on other labels. I would presume the terms you mention that he’d ask for may be hard to agree on, just speculation though. Personally I really like Dekmantel it’s a strong label. RE: (313) Terrence Parker
I have no real information on these no shows (just whats been said here) but I do have first hand experience of booking dealing with him and he was a real gent, his agent was a hard a** though, difficult to deal with if I remember correctly. I hope he sorts all this stuff out as his by far one of the best djs I ever seen. To me, that doesn't matter much. As I have been following this, I've had a couple of feelings about it. One-many people enjoy kicking you while you're down. And, two: This music business has always been a game played by people with honest hearts against those who would rather eat your heart for breakfast. My hope is that he'll tell us all the story in some public way (whether he 'makes his goal' or not). I believe it could be a great cautionary tale-because some kid with a good ear and stars in their eyes needs to know that this business and life have a dark side. I've lived the good times and the bad in music, and can say with great talent comes great pain. I refuse to trash TP publicly. I do think that on its face this issue looks horrible for him and his 'image.' As a believer in God, it also can be difficult for the non-secular among us to not think of Televangelists begging for money before 'God calls me home.' I only hope that he is able to make a resolution. Personally-I've been homeless TWICE, lost 75% of my records, all my memorabilia and two different hardware studio setups already...and I've never, NEVER been able to find an agent willing to work for me. One day it may happen. However you look at this situation-it's really quite sad and painful to watch. If you like being uncomfortable, it's a great drama. I'll keep my eyes on something more positive instead. Missing gigs as a DJ is really hard to live down. As an example, Paul Johnson got a reputation as a no show, and I think that it still effects the number and quality of bookings he gets to this day. I just want people to know that whatever happened, TP is a human being too. There's a tendency -- and I'm not accusing anyone on this list per se -- to pile on when someone's down, and I couldn't see it happen to someone I know and respect and hold my tongue. RE: (313) Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus remix
I agree with some of your points, but for me I'd not mix the unedited track in, just fade and let the song do its work. I've seen DJ Harvey play Africa, around disco house records and he played the original, it worked, it got an enormous sing along and desired effect reached. Carl Craig has done edits in the past under the name C2C4 on Moxie, the Talking heads edit for me is pointless- PLAY THE ORINGINAL - Don't just loop the drums because the vocals really make that track, it would frustrate me on the dance floor that I never got to sing along. I saw Nick Hoppner at the Panorama bar and he drop 'its our life' by Talk Talk, it was the original, the vocals kick in really fast but it worked, the whole place had their arms in the air and were singing along -Original Message- From: David Powers [mailto:cybo...@gmail.com] Sent: 18 June 2013 15:57 To: Paul Kendrick Cc: Rob Taylor; Wibo Lammerts; Daniel Bean; benny blanco(r); list 313 Subject: Re: (313) Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus remix If you are a radio DJ, sure, but from the viewpoint of a serious dance DJ I would definitely would want an edit for these reasons: 1. Most important, at minimum you need to loop up something at beginning and end for mixing into and out of 2. Typical pop song structure is too short for the dance floor, it really makes it's point as quickly as possible and suddenly the song is over. This doesn't create the type of altered state of consciousness you want for dancers; to me dancing is very spiritual and you want music/rhythms that are conducive to attaining a real trance state, without needing drugs. I am not really a big fan of your normal pop music formulate, it's very limiting. 3. For me personally, the chorus is a bit too epic and cheese, I'd prefer to somehow tone it down somehow, filter and otherwise dub it out, and probably would only let it appear once, not multiple times as in normal pop song structure. The verse works for me, but it so clearly leads into the chorus that it probably needs to still occur before the chorus. So, if I was editing it, I would definitely focus on the intro bit, and the bridge with the keyboard solo; that changes it from a pop song into a dance track... 4. The type of production is really a mismatch in a set of house and techno records, basically in terms of the drums. Adding a bit of drum machine really makes it work better on the dance floor. (Remember... This is EXACTLY what the originators of house were doing with some disco records!) Just one man's opinion, I'm sure others disagree, but as someone who has released edits, perhaps the above will explain what it is that drives me to do a bunch of work to alter a song that is already a good song... in a nutshell, the radio pop song form is quite different from the type of form I prefer as a DJ. There might be exceptions when I do play a pop song if I figure out a brilliant way to mix it in, or it's the last song in a set, or for some reason I want to surprise people, but it's not something I would do often. ~dp On Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 3:10 AM, Paul Kendrick p...@dagmar-tara.com wrote: I must say I think Africa is a classic and doesn't need an edit/remix/whateverjust play the original... Surgeon, December 2005 http://www.sendspace.com/file/7ks6tt Terrace did a live set for us and Stefan stayed for a few days to hang out after he had some fun stories to tell regarding Derrick May Carl Craig. Towards the end of the live set there's a full on 303 assault as Stefan's partner in the Acid Junkies was also at the party and jump up on stage and started playing with Stefan, which was a cool surprise. 13th November 2004 http://www.sendspace.com/file/632hqm This link is for Terrance Parker who we brought over and promoted the party as Outlet Collective presents the RUCK, with a few other people involved in the promotion to help. TP was excellent and I don't think the recording does the set justice, I've been told by people that this was one of the fave Outlet parties. As you would think he goes all over the place and shows his skills off to the max, 2 copies of loads of records, he gives a little talk at the end too, which was fun. 9th September 2006 http://www.sendspace.com/file/mirah3 From: Andrew Duke In The Mix/Cognition Audioworks [mailto:andrewdukecognit...@gmail.commailto:andrewdukecognit...@gmail.com] Sent: 16 May 2013 17:06 To: Paul Kendrick Cc: Wibo Lammerts; James Fisher; 313@hyperreal.orgmailto:313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Interview with DJ Pete about Hard Wax etc. Yes, please upload that set and any other goodies you might have, Paul. http://andrewdukeinthemix.com On Thu, May 16, 2013 at 7:20 AM, Paul Kendrick p...@dagmar-tara.commailto:p...@dagmar-tara.com wrote: OK, I'll get on it and get it up loaded. RE: (313) Interview with DJ Pete about Hard Wax etc.
A while back when I was part of a promoter thing called Outlet based in London, we put DJ Pete on a lot and I must say his not only a stand up all round top fella, but an ace DJ, can put on a top live set as Substance and when Scion played for us doing Arrange Process, him and Rene had the crowd moshing. Most funny. If you ever get the chance to see him spin at his residency at the Berghain I would also recommend that, its not only Dettmann and Klock who can do the long sets in the main room, Pete is ace at this too, and is sort of over looked. RE: (313) Scott Hardkiss
Very sad news regarding Scott, I have all the early Hardkiss records and around the mid 90's they were well respected producers and the records were commanding fairly good 2nd prices, adding to their reputation. Some of the stuff sounds very dated now but a large amount still sounds good and could be played out today and get a good response. I don't really remember any of the Hardkiss crew coming to the UK much, Scott Robbie played at the legendary London party The Final Frontier at Club UK once, apart from that I cant remember many other visits, which is a shame as they had their own sound for sure. Sad to hear about his untimely passing as I sure he was still young. -Original Message- From: Fred Heutte [mailto:ph...@sunlightdata.com] Sent: 30 March 2013 01:59 To: 313@hyperreal.org; plann...@lists.fnf.org Subject: (313) Scott Hardkiss Peace, my brother... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIS9C1tA7Hc --- http://newsflash.bigshotmag.com/features/23958/ R.I.P. In the early '90s Scott Friedel was a member of pioneering San Francisco DJ/producer trio Hardkiss which was rounded out by musical partners Gavin and Robbie. The Hardkiss Brothers (who weren't biologically related) helped nourish and influence the era's fledgling West Coast sound - psychedelia mixed with Balearic, house and techno - via Bay Area warehouse parties as well as remixes and productions issued on Hardkiss Music. After relocating to New York City in the late '90s, Scott, who also recorded under the God Within moniker (listen to his classic Raincry below), went on to remix for the likes of Elton John, George Clinton and The Flaming Lips. In 2009 he released his well- received debut album, Technicolor Dreamer, and he also contributed music to various film, television and commercial projects led by Spike Lee, Wes Anderson and Richard Linklater. When I was running Mixer magazine, I worked closely with Scott on Mixer presents United DJs of America Vol. 17: Scott Hardkiss released in 2001. I got to know him well on a professional and social basis. Scott was a singular individual who marched to his own beat; he was an exceptionally talented individual who saw the world with a unique view. He was wildly intelligent and had an incredibly dry sense of humor that always brought a smile to my face. Whenever Scott was behind the decks, I'd marvel at the soundtrack he wove together with strains of house, breaks, trance and beyond that few could replicate. Have a listen to his Essential Mix and soak in the essence of Scott Hardkiss' beautiful musical soul. Rest in peace, my friend. Update, March 26 12:00pm: There has been an outpouring of love from people remembering Scott on social media. (See below.) Wade Hampton (a.k.a. WishFM), who knew Scott during their days on the San Francisco scene, told Big Shot: Scott was a visionary. Although he was as elusive as any DJ could be at the dawn of our EDM movement, he helped build a loyal strong family unit with Hardkiss Family. That's all that mattered to us. As long as we knew he always reaching for perfection, the path we took really didn't matter...and this cool cat attained it all the time. I'll miss my homie dearly. http://www.vibe.com/article/dance-community-refelections-rip-scott-hardkiss-friedel Dance Community Refelections: RIP Scott Hardkiss Friedel Jorge Hernandez Posted March 26, 2013 Influential San Francisco DJ and producer Scott Hardkiss Friedel passed away Monday night at the age of 43. The cause of death has not been confirmed at this time but is believed to be an aneurysm. It has previously been noted that Hardkiss had keratoconus, a degenerative eye condition that required transplant surgery in 2011, and one of his last social posts a few days ago was about him not feeling well. A key player in growing the early '90s rave scene in San Francisco as one third of the Hardkiss Brothers (along with spiritual kin Gavin and Robbie Hardkiss), Scott also had a successful solo career as a DJ and producer. One of his best-remembered tracks is 1993's Raincry released under his God Within alias. In the late '90s, Scott moved to New York and assumed his full-time persona as Scott Hardkiss, purveyor of pop songs touched with Balearic breakbeats and transcendent funk. He went on to do remixes for artists as varied as Elton John, the Flaming Lips and George Clinton. His debut album Techinicolor Dreamer was released in 2009 and was accompanied by remixes from Christian Prommer, Bjorn Torske, Telepathe and Brennan Green. Scott is remembered as an adventurous collaborator by those that worked with him, including Lisa Shaw, Dean Britta, and Q-Burn's Abstract Message just to name a few. In a blog post, Q-Burns (Michael Donaldson) recalls meeting Scott in the

You not going Ken? Id have been up for going if I was able to go...its a great room for exhibitions, but it could have sound problems if not handled correctly and the Tate have failed at the first hurdle so I hope its not a sign of things to come. Nicholas Serota (Director of Tate) says it's not the first time the website has crashed from over demand, so he must have known there would be the same problem. So this leads me to think he doesn't care enough to sort out the problems and in turn couldn't care about the shows them self's and the sound bouncing around in that concrete room. -Original Message- From: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:ken.odel...@dowjones.com] Sent: 13 December 2012 11:43 To: Paul Kendrick; Williams Graham G; 1-11 Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) Kraftwerk: Concerts next year Some Bleep43 folk got tickets I think, Paul. -Original Message- From: Paul Kendrick [mailto:p...@dagmar-tara.com] Sent: 13 December 2012 11:42 To: Williams Graham G; 1-11 Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) Kraftwerk: Concerts next year Hey, Did any of the UK peeps get tickets for the London Tate shows? When a record came out on Electron Industries we'd get very excited as much so as a new UR record, which was a big thing back then. The clear vinyls were all excellent records but the double 12 by Sem is a monster. Mark Brooms a really nice down to earth guy, he use to live in the same area as me in London, Bethnal Green. We'd always end up seeing each other in the supermarket, very techno - haha. His moved out North of London now. Eddies full of very funny stories, years ago towards the end of out door raves Eddie somehow ended up having Frankie Bones living with him in Southend, I think Frankie was getting booked a lot in the UK around this time. The story goes that Frankie stayed for about 4 month but had to return to NYC because he couldn't handle the madness of Eddies life and the scrapes he'd get him into, and apparently Frankie was a broken man when he returned homehahaha From: benny blanco(r) [mailto:be...@blancodisco.com] Sent: 04 December 2012 11:48 To: list 313; Paul Kendrick Subject: Re: (313) Ask 313 Electron Industries / Sem / Octagon Man were always highlights for me when new releases came out in the shops. Man... to get those colored vinyls in clear sleeves seemed highly coveted cause only a handful would ever make it to town. Nice story on Eddie of A13. Closest I got to A13 (the label) was when Mark Broom came to DJ a small tour in the US up in New Hampshire (when I lived in Boston at the time) to play with Spacetime Continuum and then Autechre was the Headliner. Mark Killed it DJ'ing. I was overly obsessed at the time and must carried up 5 or 6 Pure Plastic / A13 releases Mark Produced and had him sign the vinyl/sleeves Soma might be an obvious label to mention too, but there are quite a few releases that were NOT huge by any means.. and still pretty good. Even some of Slam's non single Album cuts are quite worthy. Paul...if I lived yer way... we'd totally be Mates by the sound of your Record Collection.. Seems like the battery of UK Techno labels from the 90's are big sleepers in the larger community of Techno, but seem to be coveted and admired greatly by many of us that remain on this list. That is kinda comforting as I haven't thought about them much unless a track happened to pop up in iTunes that I may have digitally recorded. RE: (313) 313'ers in Tokyo? Techno recommendations?
Disk Union is wicked for new and 2nd hand stuff there 313 section is massive and very good, there are stores all over Tokyo but the one in Shibuya is by far the best an has a DB floor as well as floors for disco, techno, hip hop and Jazz... Lots of the techno stores seems to have shut the last time was there which is a shame... Also I would recommend the fish market and if you have time Kyoto is wicked, 2/3 or so hours on the bullet train from Tokyo -Original Message- From: Lori Draper [mailto:girly...@gmail.com] Sent: 27 October 2010 17:21 To: 313 Subject: (313) 313'ers in Tokyo? Any 313ers have recommendations for other clubs/techno music resources in the city? I've checked out a club called Eleven and scouted the Tokyo Gig Guide, but wanted to hear back from those I trust the most... you guys. I expect record shopping is prohibitively expensive but who knows. New husband is a drum and bass/dubstep guy, but loves techno as well. Thanks in advance for any advice! -Lori

I'm a little puzzled about some of the technical details also: What size is the hole in the middle? Presumably it has to be large enough to accommodate the 15mm-ish spindle CD players use? Do you get some special adaptor for the smaller spindle on a vinyl turntable? I make a CD to be only just larger than the label area on a conventional modern record. So either it only has a few seconds playing time or (more likely) it has a playable groove extending further toward the centre of the disc? But not all tone arms will move this far, some only expect to get as far as the run out groove of conventional vinyl and their range doesn't extend beyond that. Or am I being really stupid not visualising this thing correctly? -Original Message- From: mistamuthaf...@yahoo.com [mailto:mistamuthaf...@yahoo.com] Sent: 09 June 2010 1:48 To: ja...@iridite.com; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) ANOTHER Mills album (and the future of Music Formats??) Because when hood plays at smaller clubs in London there never as packed as when he plays Fabric because these types people wont go and see this type of dj play out of there comfort zone with all there other like minded people. RE: (313) Bloc: Atkins Interstellar Fugutives
When I saw UR in Brighton, (south England) doing a similar show they played Numbers but Skurge mixed it in and Mike played some extra keys over the top and this could explain why Frequency 7 sounded very similar to the original. And no offense to anyone but Ferndale / Madison Heights etc.. That is not Detroit that's the burbs Tim / Planet Detroit * Re. Bloc: there might well be some sheepish non-admissions from some who were in attendance (including me) who missed Mr Atkins due to needing to catch up on their sleep ... I'm admitting nothing and suggesting nothing but I did distinctly hear that he showed up for his spot and it turned out quite well. I wonder if anyone has news about his other bookings (inc. with Model 500) over the Easter holiday in Europe ... ? In other news, Interstellar Fugutives AKA, DJ Skurge, Mike Banks, Ray Seven (and very very sorry, I forget who the lead vocalist was ... although he was effective in my view) were good, imo, although many people I spoke to found their gig disappointing. It seemed that this was not due to any sloppiness, poor sound, content let-downs or anything, more I think that for some, the performance lacked 'oomph'. It's possible that the crew were a bit tired because by the time they played on the Friday night before last, they had already done a few nights that week. One person who spoke to Mike Banks suggested that they'd not slept (much?) for a few days in fact! Personally I enjoyed their set although I'd agree that the playing could have been a little punchier. Many faves (at least of mine) old and new were there, Afrogermanic, Geiger Counter, The Electrocutor, Moor Horsemen On Bolaris, Negative Evolution etc. For me the highlight was the jaw-dropping surprise inclusion of 'Frequency 7' - which somehow the group had engineered to be a very close cover, reverb, compression, chords and all - and then added some extra sass. The serious appreciation from about 10 people who recognized it must been bemused to the the other 3-400 who didn't. I stick by what I said afterwards that this particular line-up has potential to provide some more unequivocally excellent performances in the months and years to come. I do know that he was having some major health problems, and looked unhealthily skinny a few years back when I saw him walking around at the festival... One thing about him, that Terrence Parker said to me a few years back when I asked about Juan. Terrence said that it's one thing to make a few records and show up to DJ at parties and have a few people know who you are. It's quite another to be in the position of being a founding artist in a whole new genre, whose early work attained mythic status in the scene. He thought Juan felt that pressure keenly. There's the man Juan who is showing up to play a show, and there's this giant mythical beast following him around like a shadow. Some people -- i.e. Derrick -- can surf the wave of their reputation and enjoy the ride. Others like Kevin Saunderson, are grounded in family and church, and let the crazy stuff slide. Juan is in a third category. Don't know those guys, can't speak for them, just my impressions from the outside. But I still thought the right way forward was to have a Facebook page for me and a MySpace page for our night. So recently I joined up under a pseudonym so I could start a group. I then spoke to various friends who I thought were well into it and said give me some pointers on how best to do this thing. To my surprise I received the reply oh MySpace is over now, nobody uses it anymore, just do it on Facebook. This is fine for me if true as I've become confident with Facebook (I'll do us a group there anyway as it's a doddle) where I'm scared of MySpace. My impression was MySpace was still used by creative types (for example I thought a band would still have a MySpace rather than Facebook page) but this lot I asked are well into spending time on these things and I know were big on MySpace but now aren't. (313) Kenny Larkin in Berlin this weekend
Off his my space, I think he is promoting a new album which is about to drop on Carl Craig's label...not 100% on that though. My tour is going great so far... Amsterdam was great, despite some weird problems with one of the monitors crashing to the floor in the dj booth the whole night, causing the needle to jump constantly the whole night! D'oh!! Belgium was good also. But, looks like I will be playing in Berlin at The Panorama Bar this coming Saturday. It was added at the last minute. So I have four more gigs to do: Friday Feb.8 : Barzilay club, Tel Aviv, Israel Saturday Feb.9: Panarama Bar, Berlin, Germany Friday Feb.15 : Liquid Lounge Club, Cork, Ireland Saturday Feb.16 : Palais Club, Munich, Germany
RE: (313) derrick may rarities
I second that Ken its a great remix, I've heard KMS play it a few times, not for years though -Original Message- From: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 30 January 2008 16:24 To: 313 Org Subject: RE: (313) derrick may rarities Another good one, imo: http://www.discogs.com/release/14343 Not really a rarity as such, but I've never heard anyone play it myself and I think it would really work well in a house, electro or techno set. Instead of picking an artist whose records comprise significant sections of my collection, I decided to pick one that's not so easy for me, but maybe easy for you guys: Derrick May! Is there anything he's done that's really off the beaten path that's worth the effort to seek out? RE: (313) Russ Gabriel's latest releases
The reissue 12 had a couple of classic tracks on it and nearly everything that Russ Gabriel does is excellent. Most of the stuff on ferox is wicked, it was minimal before the current minimal sound you get today, if you have a look at the track list on this http://www.discogs.com/release/75030 there is loads on Ferox stuff on it, it sums up that period really well.. Most of the stuff on the label is tip top. http://www.discogs.com/release/17543 http://www.discogs.com/release/17991 Both wicked -Original Message- From: Dmitry [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 02 November 2007 08:43 To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Russ Gabriel's latest releases I have this new release: http://www.discogs.com/release/1073327 This is a reissue of classic tracks from Ferox and Russ Gabriel. RE: (313) UR Live in the UK- Report
They played at the Brighton city festival with Laurent Garnier on the same bill. It was a bit disorganised to begin with but the sound and the venue were cool, as were the drink prices and the security. And you'll know this, but when ever you go clubbing out side London people are much more friendly..they were a good crowd. -Original Message- From: Robert Taylor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 29 October 2007 10:11 To: Paul Kendrick; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) UR Live in the UK- Report Where was that Paul? They came on just past midnight and played for about 1 hour 20 mins I think, 5 people on stage including Banks all of them had there faces covered- which still makes me laugh. Banks seemed to be having a keyboard problem and later on I found out that he did as ones of the hired keyboards didn't work, but it sounded fine to me. From memory they played Chaos Order, Cargo Cult, Crackzilla, Attack Of The Sonic Samurai, The Final Frontier - which merged with Kraftwerk numbers and then adonis no way back then back into The Final Frontier, Maroon, Kill My Radio Station and then I Am UR..
