Re: (313) MM Bootlegs + R&S at LOST
Two things: 1. I don't think that someone is "asking for it" if they overprice their releases. Obviously vinyl is hugely important, but it's not our right to be able to buy records at the price we want. That's a justification for theft - which is what bootlegging is. I should note that I'm only trying to outline what I see as the principal, I've bought bootlegs in my time. 2. R&S at LOST - v. good indeed. Don't know what Maurizio and Mark look like, but assuming that they have an impassive, vaguely teutonic appearance then it was probably them (nice polo neck!). They played a puckah selection of mostly 80s + a bit of 70s, that would have gone down pretty well at a dedicated roots night. They also played 'King In My Empire'. Major difference from a roots night was that almost no one was dancing. I found this a bit strange since reggae is dance music after all. However, it actually worked really well in the LOST context, since they have been lacking a proper chill out room for ages. I think it makes the main room work much better (though moving the reeking toilets out of the chill out room probably helped as well). Dan >Amp dog knight - feeling fine is just new It's new, but somewhat unbelievably, it went for $90 on ebay last week. And I bought the KDJ17 for $30 last month.. wich is still too much in my opinion... Yep, it's deffo too much, but I know it's been going for £40 ish here. So why would you want to bootleg this? Well, I'm not too sure really. Was really interested to hear what other people thought about it. That's my point, I don't get it. Surely they must be doing it for financial purposes, which, in my opinion, in this small industry, is bang out of order really? (maybe, dunno what I think really, just up for a discussion on this slow afternoon).
Re: (313) tone arm wiggling
I can think of three possible explanations: 1. the height ring is not locked, which makes the whole assembly a bit wobbly 2. the pins holding the arm in place are a bit loose (tighten v. gently) 3. the socket that the headshell sits in is loose - this is really annoying and may require a new tone arm. Dan I also noticed with that table when I cue records or try to scratch the needle and tone arm move around a lot and usually pop out of the groove. the other table does not do this. I've been experiencing this problem a lot recently. I bought new needles last year but the problem remains, when I cue the records the needle jumps out the groove and goes back to the start. Putting 5 p coins on top of the cartridge sorted the problem out but when I read on 313 about extra weight damaging records they came straight off! I've tried adjusting the weight & height of the tone arm but it doesn't help the problem. I put it down to the fact that I must have been sold some dodgy needles (they're the standard Stanton ones) & thought trying a different make might sort it out. Does anyone know what the problem might be? G.

One other thing, when I solicited contributions earlier I also meant that I'd like to receive input on how such an event should be run (e.g. time, day of the week, amount of soft furnishings etc) As far as ethos goes, I think Brendan summed it up quite nicely with: "I miss those days when people would just lie around and listen to whatever pieces of sparkly electronic music you felt like playing for them..." Dan. SLEEP MUSIC 1. Why can't you hear this kind of thing played out in clubs? Two obvious answers I suppose, firstly - you can but I've missed it, secondly - because clubs want people to dance and buy beer rather than fall asleep. What happened to all the backrooms? I used to have some wicked sleeps in them. 2. Would anyone in London/UK be intersted in coming/contributing to an event based on this kind of music if I organised it, in a warehouse rather than a club? (Possibly Sunday mornings?) Re: (313) recomended latin/salsa techno
How about Kim Bilir's 'Feelin?' Not particulary Latin in a melodic sense, but to my ear it has that really dense syncopated percussion and whistles sound like those massive drum bands from South America (Brazil perhaps?) Damn fine record anyhow Dan Not forgetting Andrew McLauchlan's "Love Story" which came out in 1999 and has been caned by every DJ since The trouble, Mills aside, is that IMO a lot of the latin-influenced techno that came out after that just concentrated on getting some latino-style rhythms and sample presets and then programming them in that style, without any soul whatsoever. See Adam Beyer and others for examples. I played around with a lot of it for around a year or so without any success, before dipping into the housier side of things and finding far more diversity. Check Osunlade for example.

Big Black, led by Steve Albini, were based in Evanston IL, though I believe that Steve Albini was from MT (?). The back cover of 'Atomiser' has a letter addressed to the bassist, David Riley, from the Electrifying Mojo, welcoming him to the MFA (Midnight Funk Association) and a MFA ID card signed by the Mojo that says: "The bearer of this card is a No.1 fan of the Electrifying Mojo; and a member in good standing who is entitled to special priviledges and considerations due to members of the M.F.A.; as specified by the Electrifying Mojo. CLUB MEETING: Monday thru Saturday 12 Mid to 12.30 a.m." Sorry for this outburst of extreme (and OT) trainspotterism, but I thought that was quite cool actually. BTW, Big Black often used a Roland drum machine in their recordings. Also, their record label 'Touch and Go' is pretty awesome, with acts like The Jesus Lizard, Urge Overkill etc. Not very 313 I realise, but great music nonetheless. Dan I second Big Black - weren't they from Detroit? This may be an extremely tenuous 313-link but doesn't the cover have a matchbook or a membership card or something (sorry, I haven't seen it in years) depicting the Electrifying Mojo's radio show? Re: (313) What! Nothing about Lost? (rant)
I say Techno! Crikey, that's a bit stiff isn't it? As Brendan rightly pointed out, if it's good it's good. My point was that the selecting at LOST was a bit uninspiring, maybe someone else playing those same tunes in a slightly different order or something might have made me dance my arse off. As it happens, I was ecstatic about Drum & Bass in the mid nineties, but that doesn't mean that I'm a better person than someone who bought their first D&B 12" last week. No one owns (or should own) music to the exclusion of others once it's been created IMO. The important thing is whether people can get to a different place when they're listening to it. Presumably you did listen to an awful lot of 'Black' music when you grew up, none of which sucked, and absolutely none of that stinky white pop stuff. In which case give yourself a jolly big pat on the back for being born/brought up in the right place/time, by the right family/friends. Well done! If you simply like wind ups, then well done again, good show! Best Dan The nostalgia trend is getting old. (no pun intended) Mojo, Larry Levan, Ron Hardy, italo-disco, deephousepage, ect.. ect.. All you people that used to be into minimal techno, landstrum that type of stuff in the mid 90's and didn't grow up listening to black music and now you think you know everything about "soul" or your Mr. "deep house". YOU SUCK. fake trendy ass superficial people. on 1/6/03 5:39 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sorry to be the party pooper, but I thought that the LOST christmas party was a bit disappointing, certainly not unique musically. Nonetheless, nice one to LOST for breaking away from the huge party route and doing something a bit different, however, for small parties, SLICES still wins hands down. Dan Quit surprised that nobody of the London area 313-ers did not post anything about the last Lost party... I thought it was an amazing and unique party. How often can you hear in a 300 people venue Steve Bicknell, Luke Slater and Jeff Mills play back to back (kinda) with just soul, funk, disco and 80's house music? The most modern record that Jeff Mills dropped was Move Your Body from Marshal Jefferson! The rest of his records where stuff like Loose Joints, Dan Hartman, O'Jays, Sylvester JD's etc. It was maybe a little bit to full to dance nicely (well there was not really a dancefloor anyway) but still i thought it was one of the best parties i have been to in a long while ... and it is a bit of old news but the Bleep43 New years eve party was brilliant, never had so much fun on NY eve!
