Glenn Gregory did a duet with Claudia Brucken for the single "When Your

collaborated for ABC's new album.

Claudia Brucken was the singer from Propaganda, no?

I was going to ask if anyone had any strong recommendations on jazz from
after the 70s. Andrew Hill's album from 2002, "Dusk", is a firm favourite of
mine - I'm listening to it for about the 200th time as I type. It isn't
Marsalis style classic jazz, it isn't noisy art made for Wire readers, it's
just ace. Much like Joe Henderson (yes OK, Jurren so what? ;) Andrew Hill
just focused on his own musical personality, without caring much for
fashion. That's a good signal that Here-lies-great-music if you ask me.
Anyone else got some hot late jazz tips?

RE: (313) Where do you keep all your records?

2003-03-11 Thread Dan Kurzius
i like to use wooden adjustable storage shelves. i'm talking about the ones
that allow you to adjust shelf placement. once i set my shelves in place, i
screw a 1x4 board under each to give the shelves a little extra stabiliy and
keep records from wanting to slide out the back.

you can buy fancy versions of these shelves at places like the container
store or hit home improvement shops. they are all over the place.

here's a pick www.latenightessentials.com/img/misc/records.jpg of 1 of my 3

Hi, maybe a stupid question, but where do you store all of those records?
Just in your livingroom in a cabinet or just stacked away in some corner,
or in crates?

Any ideas, photo's of there records, etc?

I'm moving this month to my new house and want to get rid of all those
crates but I find it hard to find a nice cabinet or something for a decent
price, I'd better buy more records for that money then :-)

I own about 1400 records but there surely are people with a lot more

Re: (313) MM Bootlegs + R&S at LOST

2003-03-11 Thread dan

Two things:

1. I don't think that someone is "asking for it" if they overprice
their releases. Obviously vinyl is hugely important, but it's not our
right to be able to buy records at the price we want. That's a
justification for theft - which is what bootlegging is. I should note
that I'm only trying to outline what I see as the principal, I've
bought bootlegs in my time.

2. R&S at LOST - v. good indeed. Don't know what Maurizio and Mark
look like, but assuming that they have an impassive, vaguely teutonic
appearance then it was probably them (nice polo neck!). They played a
puckah selection of mostly 80s + a bit of 70s, that would have gone
down pretty well at a dedicated roots night. They also played 'King
In My Empire'. Major difference from a roots night was that almost no
one was dancing. I found this a bit strange since reggae is dance
music after all. However, it actually worked really well in the LOST
context, since they have been lacking a proper chill out room for
ages. I think it makes the main room work much better (though moving
the reeking toilets out of the chill out room probably helped as
well).

Dan

 >Amp dog knight - feeling fine is just new

It's new, but somewhat unbelievably, it went for $90 on ebay last week.

And I bought the KDJ17 for $30 last month.. wich is still too much in my

opinion...

Yep, it's deffo too much, but I know it's been going for £40 ish here.

So why would you want to bootleg this?

Well, I'm not too sure really. Was really interested to hear what other
people thought about it. That's my point, I don't get it. Surely they must
be doing it for financial purposes, which, in my opinion, in this small
industry, is bang out of order really? (maybe, dunno what I think really,
just up for a discussion on this slow afternoon).

Re: (313) tone arm wiggling

2003-03-05 Thread dan

I can think of three possible explanations:

1. the height ring is not locked, which makes the whole assembly a bit wobbly
2. the pins holding the arm in place are a bit loose (tighten v. gently)
3. the socket that the headshell sits in is loose - this is really
annoying and may require a new tone arm.

Dan

I also noticed with that table when I cue records or try to scratch the
needle and tone arm move around a lot and usually pop out of the groove.
the
other table does not do this.

I've been experiencing this problem a lot recently. I bought new needles
last year but the problem remains, when I cue the records the needle jumps
out the groove and goes back to the start. Putting 5 p coins on top of the
cartridge sorted the problem out but when I read on 313 about extra weight
damaging records they came straight off!
I've tried adjusting the weight & height of the tone arm but it doesn't
help the problem. I put it down to the fact that I must have been sold some
dodgy needles (they're the standard Stanton ones) & thought trying a
different make might sort it out.

Does anyone know what the problem might be?

there's alot i want to say to the new people, but that's for the

i hope it does well. i'm behind the new guys all the way in hopes

so.

hell, i'd even DJ ;P...

i hope derrick and whomever is in charge provides the festival with
not

only
a good balance of new (*cough*craig gonzalez/matt dear*cough*) and
old(*sneeze*shakeandclaudeyoung) detroit people, but artists also

taking

it

to new territories. maybe bringing some really way out stuff like

Taylor

Deupree or Kim Cascone. some Jan Jelinek, Telefon Tel Aviv or Metro

Area.

there's plenty of exciting, quality new music out there that Detroit
audiences have yet to be exposed to. i hope they have the wide angle

lens

on
to include alot of different styles, rather than just banging it
out.

i hope the visuals are tastefully done and not over saturated with
unecessary loops of inappropriate commercials during an artistic
performance
(in between performances is okay, if you really HAVE to.). i
also

hope
the main thoroughfare doesn't become a noisef_k of bass from stacks
in

every
tent. there HAS to be some sort of limitations on that.

there are many many other things i'd like to see happen, but i'm
happy

with

the outcome and i sincerely hope that they buckle up, shut up, put

their
heads down, work their tails off and present a festival unlike
anything

detroit's seen yet.

How about Kim Bilir's 'Feelin?'

Not particulary Latin in a melodic sense, but to my ear it has that
really dense syncopated percussion and whistles sound like those
massive drum bands from South America (Brazil perhaps?)

Damn fine record anyhow

Dan

Not forgetting Andrew McLauchlan's "Love Story" which came out in 1999 and
has been caned by every DJ since The trouble, Mills aside, is that IMO
a lot of the latin-influenced techno that came out after that just
concentrated on getting some latino-style rhythms and sample presets and
then programming them in that style, without any soul whatsoever. See Adam
Beyer and others for examples.

I played around with a lot of it for around a year or so without any
success, before dipping into the housier side of things and finding far more
diversity. Check Osunlade for example.

Big Black, led by Steve Albini, were based in Evanston IL, though I
believe that Steve Albini was from MT (?). The back cover of
'Atomiser' has a letter addressed to the bassist, David Riley, from
the Electrifying Mojo, welcoming him to the MFA (Midnight Funk
Association) and a MFA ID card signed by the Mojo that says:

"The bearer of this card is a No.1 fan of the Electrifying Mojo; and
a member in good standing who is entitled to special priviledges and
considerations due to members of the M.F.A.; as specified by the
Electrifying Mojo.

CLUB MEETING: Monday thru Saturday 12 Mid to 12.30 a.m."

Sorry for this outburst of extreme (and OT) trainspotterism, but I
thought that was quite cool actually. BTW, Big Black often used a
Roland drum machine in their recordings.

Also, their record label 'Touch and Go' is pretty awesome, with acts
like The Jesus Lizard, Urge Overkill etc. Not very 313 I realise, but
great music nonetheless.

Dan

I second Big Black - weren't they from Detroit? This may be an extremely
tenuous 313-link but doesn't the cover have a matchbook or a membership card
or something (sorry, I haven't seen it in years) depicting the Electrifying
Mojo's radio show?

Re: (313) What! Nothing about Lost? (rant)

2003-01-06 Thread dan

I say Techno! Crikey, that's a bit stiff isn't it?

As Brendan rightly pointed out, if it's good it's good. My point was
that the selecting at LOST was a bit uninspiring, maybe someone else
playing those same tunes in a slightly different order or something
might have made me dance my arse off.

As it happens, I was ecstatic about Drum & Bass in the mid nineties,
but that doesn't mean that I'm a better person than someone who
bought their first D&B 12" last week. No one owns (or should own)
music to the exclusion of others once it's been created IMO. The
important thing is whether people can get to a different place when
they're listening to it.

Presumably you did listen to an awful lot of 'Black' music when you
grew up, none of which sucked, and absolutely none of that stinky
white pop stuff. In which case give yourself a jolly big pat on the
back for being born/brought up in the right place/time, by the right
family/friends. Well done!

If you simply like wind ups, then well done again, good show!

Best

Dan

The nostalgia trend is getting old. (no pun intended)

stuff in the mid 90's and didn't grow up listening to black music and
