Subject: New Speaker Music

You know, if you're a Detroit techno fan, you know about the Drexciyan
mythology.

Deforest Brown AKA Speaker Music has taken the Drexciyan mythos and run with it.

Is it Detroit techno? No, It's hard to say what it is exactly, There's
some of the relentless rhythm of footwork, but it isn't footwork. It's
avant-garde Afro-Futurist electronic music, an overwhelming sonic
assault.

I have to say that I love anything under the heading of Afro-Futurism,
though I have to say I don't entirely understand it. That's OK by me.
I'm having the most fun when I'm being overwhelmed and confused by new
music.

Re: RIP Techno Tourist & Electro producer Wibo Lammerts

2022-08-18 Thread Ronny Pries
I picked this up almost week ago now. To me, he belonged to the circle of names
I mostly bumped into again and again online. Throughout the last decades. Of
course, I also heard a few of his releases. But I didn't know him personally.

And yet, it keeps circling in my system. Beyond my thoughts revolving around
his family.

Maybe along the lines of what Kevin wrote earlier. About all the things we
didn't tell each other when we could.

I also wonder how content Wibo was with his artistic journey. If he found what
he was looking for within. If he, deep inside, was satisfied with how he was
perceived as a 'creative'.

If that's even a possible thing to achieve for anyone.

Thank you all for somehow being part of my journey for all these years. For the
insights into a different world, culture, its struggle, its fruits, delivering
a sense of space and place. Also for the discussions, the clash of opinions,
for just being humans.

I think we know nothing. And that, especially in the dawn of AI, it's our duty
to figure out more frugal ways of communication. To get a better understanding
about the human condition, the creative drive, the value of communication
through creative work and all that.

And I hope this runs in Wibo's spirit.

As a listener, maybe even fan of Drexciya, I wasn't aware of anything in need

I do wish though:

That if James Stinson was alive today, he'd still be the half of the duo, that
preferred breaking barriers by letting their work speak for itself.

Oddly enough, I’ve got the Impression that the Lo-Fi Deephouse youngsters are

Can we have a serious discussion about the direction of the music?

One thing I've noticed over the years is that it appears that many of the SciFi
and AfroFuturist themes that I associate with Detroit techno have gradually
disappeared from the music over the years.

Why do you think this is? Has the meaning of techno changed in some ways? Is
this a response to the fact that we are living in dystopian times and people
have given up on the future?

(If I'm wrong PLEASE tell me where I can find recent music along these lines,
because I love it.)

Maybe we all should strive to be a little bit more like him.

Re: Keep it real (and on topic)

2020-02-28 Thread Ronny Pries
I won't unsubscribe from the list.

And I wish I could stop right there, yet I'm aware it's an invitation to
rub those thinking about unsubscribing in the wrong way. So...

Don't know how many times during the last week or so I started writing a
reply, then discarded doing so thinking "what's this adding to the
discussion?", "is this gonna make things worse?", "WHY THE FUCK DO I FEEL
LIKE I HAVE TO FIX THIS?". At that point, I always realized I'm not fucking
jesus, it's not my duty to fix anything and who the fuck am I anyway.
Moreso, I have enough shit going on in my life. Things with higher
priorities. Why bother with all of this, right? Maybe some of you can
relate.

Yet, I kept arriving at the same point over and over again.

And I wondered why.

My reasoning so far: Where does it take us, folks with a mutual interest in
the same thing, if we're not able to discuss and settle things without
burning the soil? I mean, isn't this what maturity is be about? Being able
to take a step back from one's own position, leaving room for another to
co-exist. Being able to disagree in a respectful way?

And yes, it's tough. Maybe one of the toughest things these days. This
feeling that one's not able to communicate on the internet anymore without
fearing everything one writes gets ripped apart and re-assembled in the way
maximizing damage. Ever heard about Wiios Laws of communication from the
1970s? They look like this:

The fundamental Wiio's law states that "Communication usually fails, except
by accident". The full set of laws is as follows:

   1. Communication usually fails, except by accident.
  1. If communication can fail, it will.
  2. If communication cannot fail, it still most usually fails.
  3. If communication seems to succeed in the intended way, there's a
  misunderstanding.
  4. If you are content with your message, communication certainly
  fails.
   2. If a message can be interpreted in several ways, it will be
interpreted in a manner that maximizes the damage.
   3. There is always someone who knows better than you what you meant with
   your message.
   4. The more we communicate, the worse communication succeeds.
  1. The more we communicate, the faster misunderstandings propagate.
   5. In mass communication
   , the important thing
is not how things are but how they seem to be.
   6. The importance of a news item is inversely proportional to the square
   of the distance.
   7. The more important the situation is, the more probable you had
forgotten an essential thing that you remembered a moment ago.

Digest those for a moment. Wanna fall for those? I don't. I'm sick of it.
I'm sick of noticing how each and every one holds true for me, too. And it
takes me a lot of stepping back, breathing, reflecting, stepping back some
more and breathing some more to see these patterns at work. Add the 160
known biases to that. Great fun. Not.

The way I see it, it takes two to get upset. One person offering something
to get upset about, another person to follow that invitation.

It's nobody else's but MY responsibility to choose to get upset, what to
get upset about and how I want to deal with that then.

So, what's frustrating me about this entire discussion:

People not acting responsible for themselves, instead blaming each other.
Or even Kent.

Imho, it's exactly this particular lack of responsibility that put the
Trumps of he world in the places where they are. It removes personal room
for taking action. Creating this imminent notion of being unable to
actually do something, eventually letting the idiots in the world win.
Because people stop voting, thinking "what can I do about this anyway?"

I'm sick of it.

I don't think we need to chill.

Especially those who don't want to contribute to one opinion or the other
need to step up and say something.

I'm crossing this off my list for now. If anyone feels like tearing this
apart to fuel a point, I can't do anything about it. But I don't want to
shut the fuck up, acting responsible for others in not contributing out of
the fear that somebody else could actually use my words for their own
agenda. Neither here. Not anywhere else.

Stay sane folks, at least keep trying.

Re: New subscribers?

2018-10-24 Thread Ronny Pries (rktic)
Hello new'- and old'sters.

Was just wondering if I ever „properly" introduced myself here. Apart from „Hi,
I’m Ronny. I like Techno.“

The recent Drexciya thread, articles and thoughts made me think. You know, I’m
a caucasian, born and raised around Hamburg/Germany. Hence my personal
experience of being a victim of racism is about zero. Then again, being a
german, you’ve got to reflect about these things. Imho.

Crap, this is awkward. I have no concept about what it feels like to be
historically oppressed because of the color of skin. Neither was I raised in
economical circumstances as close as those found in Detroit. The weight or
burden of that combination I can at best try to imagine or feel. This is a
tough topic for a cultural ‚bystander‘ wanting to approach it in the most
respectful way possible.

What I do have a personal experience with:
Living with Angst or anxiety if you will. Being risen to function, showing good
manners on the surface. Avoid looking inside by any means. Getting a good whack
of post-WW2 parenting.

For long I thought Techno mainly appealed to me because my parents didn’t get
it. But that’s not an emotional response, right. What I found in Techno was a
strong sense of place. Where I was allowed to breathe, think and feel. True
freedom.

So, I’m aware that if I say „I kinda get it“ it’s still lacking cultural
background. Yet, where can one draw a line? And can anyone relate at all?

Just thinking out loud
Ronny

Hm, yeah - bit too tedious to dig for those. I just wanna browse e.g. labels by
year + genre…

Do we know anyone at discogs one could talk to? And isn’t the database open for
third parties? Maybe something like that already exists somewhere. hmhmhm.

Not sure what wave we are in now, but I recently came across a few new
Detroit labels:

Portage Garage Sounds
https://www.discogs.com/label/1218392-Portage-Garage-Sounds

Vanity Press Records:
https://www.discogs.com/label/980200-Vanity-Press-Records

Clave House: https://www.discogs.com/label/1197543-Clave-House

Anyone know of any others? Always interested to hear what the youngins
are up to!

Hi guys,

i recently finished this track, which is kinda sorta B12/early 90s
influenced. And instead of having it catch dust on my HD i'd rather have
others (hopefully) enjoying it.

And kind of input warmly appreciated!

On a completely unrelated sidenote, Rob Hood is going to play in Hamburg
again for the first time in ages. Oh boy, can't wait.

Well, there are certainly some good events every now and then.
Especially Pudel Golem are the places to watch out for. But the
majority of nightlife these days is powered by boring DJs at excellent
venues. Maybe i became a bit blind for what's going on but the scene has
seen much better days in Hamburg. At least in terms of diversity.

Still hope for a change. But i guess the crowd in Hamburg has always
been driven towards trends.

and Mike Huckaby have been constant guests here as well as other
Chicago djs. In 2 weeks Mike is back again to do his Sun Ra set. And
most of the new Detroit music gets played through the Smallville shop.
It's not the perfect nightlife but believe me it is better than where
I come from.

Hell, no - i'd never change Hamburg for Berlin either. Never. NEVER! :)

I def agree with you there. I do get frustrated most of the times but
still won't complain, could be much worse. It's a general worldwide
phenomena and I don't see things getting better in that sense, still I
find that being a rather small scene is what makes it special and I
wouldn't change it for the trendy Berlin. But then of course I always
have to go there once in a while to get the otherworldly feel...

great to meet others 313 technotourists subscribers.

I went to the Jeff Mills Axis 20th anniversary party in Paris
last week,
and this next friday Derrick May is at the Rex club, so my
Detroit-Techno needs are really fulfil :)

Enjoy,

Re: (313) some tunes

2012-04-19 Thread Ronny Pries
I don't get much about Nova either but i love his first two albums as
well. Mainly because
of his mood and sound, everything is damped, noisey, calm and laidback
while at the same

time flooding the room with lots of bass.

He achieved to create a sound of his own that stood out a mile from
everything else and

it still does.

Which doesn't mean everybody has to dig it.

Whether or not Burial does it for you is a matter of personal taste.
I'm a fan but I can't really explain why except that his tracks are
interesting for textural reasons. And I credit him for rescuing
mournful minor chord sequences from the prog-house people. Like he's
using the same harmonic material but he undersells them, wrapping them
in layers of echo and hiss.

On that Burial/FourTet/Nova tip... Can someone please explain to me
why people find Nova to be such a great track? Personally, I am not
impressed by any of Burials material, and find that, in general,
dubstep/Burial is more about hype than it is about music. I have
listened about 3-4 to Nova, and find it to be less than mediocre,
but apparently 600.000 people seem to think otherwise. So maybe I just
don't get it.

Have a look here: http://soundcloud.com/four-tet/burial-four-tet-nova
Apparently the track had 5 listenings the first 24 hours it was on
soundcloud? Ridiculous.

Anyway, just a couple of thoughts here...

2012-03-02 Thread Ronny Pries
Skrillex seems to be quite bright about what he does. How old is he? I'm
under the impression that he's a guy in the early 20s - if that's true
and he was already able to develop a musical background that allows him
to reassemble everything that worked during the last 20 years of
electronic dance music, that's something i can at least respect.

Funny as at Creamfields fest last year in Oz Derrick and Kevin played
at the same time as Skrillex and the crowds were quite distinct. ;)

Skrillex is such a contentious figure now he avoids interviews or lays
down conditions - it began with a facetious Guardian article. NME just
did a story on this. It's a new trend starting among DJs now, wanting
copy approval, question approval, etc, etc - of course it's never the
real innovators or those with something interesting to say. You have
no idea at some of the diva antics that go on these days... and the
image consciousness. ;)

Since August 1st I've been trying to concentrate entirely on devouring
the oeuvre of Gerald Donald and James Stinson (R.I.P.). We're talking
about 24 full hours of music over about 45-50 albums, EPs, and singles
including all their various pseudonyms. The reason I am doing this is
because I find their music to be relatively tricky to wrap my head
around in general, while so many of my friends consider Stinson/Donald
to be among the best of their contemporaries. Specifically a lot of
Stinson/Donald tunes sound particularly chaotic even to my modern ears
well trained in noise, avant garde, and the repetitive loops of
minimal classical (Steve Reich, Philip Glass) and techno music. I
wondered if completely saturating my ears with only their music would
change my opinion/enlighten me to their supposed genius at all.

To date I am about halfway through the project based on mostly casual
subway ride listening, and I've not been as diligent in avoiding the
fast forward button as I'd hoped I could be. It's really difficult to
stick to one artist who produced a pretty consistent style of music
without listening to anything else for such an extended period of
time. I do occasionally give my ears a bit of a break and allow myself
to hear some non Stinson/Donald tunage.

To date Wavejumper from their 1995 Aquatic Invasion EP remains my
absolute favorite Drexciya tune:

http://youtu.be/imKh_TKqHt4

As a side note, the name I've given this experiment - Drexciyan
Immersion Project - is a kind of funny nod to the sci-fi underwater
mythology that Drexciya built around their music/built their music
around.

just discovered that reissues of the pair's early material will be
surfacing in the near future. Clone Classic Cuts, the reissues

Re: (313) OK Kent, I see your point

Music is universal language and genres are dialects that can be
understood by anyone with a passion for it.

Music is its own meaning... there is no need for it to be this or be
that, if you choose to let it simply be. Nobody dances to a
destination. The point of the dance is the dance.

I don't think you can understand the SOCIO-POLITICS behind it without
at least living there for a few years, if not being from there.

But that only has as much meaning as you choose to attach to it.

Re: (313) beatportal 20 tracks every techno fan should know

2009-09-08 Thread Ronny Pries

As much as i'd love to join the pisstaking, i have to remind you that
they're not talking about 20 detroit techno tracks every fan should know.

Apart from that, those lists are always purely subjective and will cause
mayhem
and havoc whenever and whereever they appear. Still think there are much
more

important records to mention there but then again from a not too stubborn
detroit kind of view the list ain't too bad. It'd be worse. There could
be some

Cirez D track in it :)

Furthermore those are just 20 tracks everybody should know - it doesn't say
the most important, best or anything like that.

I compiled such a list a while ago according to beauty (whatever that
means).

Can be found here:

http://www.ronnypries.de/blog/20-most-beautiful-tracks-ever/

http://www.beatportal.com/feed/item/20-tracks-every-techno-fan-should-know/

Let the beatport hating begin ;-)

Any list like this is subjective, of course. But while Detroit is
represented on this list, it sure tilts towards the european idea of
what comprises techno. Not to put too fine a point on it, it's a lot
whiter that I'd go, and includes some tracks that I think are
reductive and boring. *cough* Swedish *cough*

I'm sure a lot of you can come up with your own '20 _real_ techno tracks' list.

Re: (313) Netbooks; worth it for music applications?

2009-06-23 Thread Ronny Pries

Remute is playing live off his MSI Wind netbook so it's gotta work somehow.
Can ask him for specs, if it's of any interest.

Was wondering if anyone out there had any experience running any music
applications on a netbook? Seems like it might be a nice/cheap
solution for running ableton/serato/whatever and quite a bit more
portable than a larger laptop. Concerned a bit weather a $250 netbook
has a beefy enough processor to handle these apps, but then again
people were running those apps on slower laptops 3 or 4 years ago.
Hmm. I'd imagine you'd have to buy an external soundcard though.
Thoughts?

Re: (313) move d + benjamin songs from the beehive

2008-12-15 Thread Ronny Pries

i heard them playing live this weekend and what shall i say.
it was one of the most remarkable evenings in a long time.
beautiful, deep, moody, funky but always making you wanna
dance.

absolutely amazing!

This CD strikes me as stupid good. where by 'stupid' I mean
intelligent, warm, subtle, varied, funky.

In particular the track Honey is a long form masterpiece -- the sort
of thing I wish Carl Craig was still doing. It starts out with a
looped, syncopated 4 bar loop that is instantly memorable, and slowly
builds up into an elegant dancefloor burner. Towards the middle an
offbeat one-note acid squawk starts that roughs things up in just the
right way. But the star of the show is that one loop, which sounds
like it's run through 10 different filters and effects, that all get
tweaked constantly to keep it fresh.

The other tracks are all over the place, from dubby to beatless
ambient, but always there's a ton of fine detail work to keep things
interesting and the sort of undefinable warmth I'd kill to be able to
put into tracks.

special focus on compressors and mixing effects of all kind, cherrypick
all the good stuff that i'd personally use and write about it. Usually
as long as stuff is fresh. But i'm also providing resources for synths,
presets, soundbanks as well as loops, sounds etc.

Everybody's warmly welcome!

All,

I know we had a list of music blogs, listing releases etc before, and
I want to rehash it and expand this list.

What blogs does everyone read that are 313 related, techno related, or
general producer / synthesizer / studio related?

If you have great blogs that are less related, please reply off list.
Stuff that would be interesting to 313'ers, but not 313.

I just want to add some more blog-power to my bookmarks.

Thanks list!

I don't like them at all, way too big but I use Ableton with nine

Re: (313) By Popular Request: DJ Milton/DJ Urban Rowdy Rowdy Mix Tap

2007-02-13 Thread Ronny Pries

ugh, what a story.

when keeping it real goes wrong or what...

thanks for the tape - the deeon mix has gotta be re-recorded cause the
mp3 i already is lousy, lousy, lousy.

ronny

http://www.cornwarning.com/xfer/DJMilton-DJUrban-RowdyRowdy.mp3

NOTE: This is uploading as I send this message and will not be
available until 0400 GMT, or 10PM US CST (11PM EST).

This tape was produced during the time when Milton was living in Iowa.
You can hear him in the first half shouting out a 319 phone number --
that was his home phone # in Cedar Rapids,IA.

I don't remember dates exactly but Milton moved to Iowa in 1998 or
thereabouts, and became a popular DJ on the Iowa scene. He brought out
several of the DanceMania DJs to shows in Iowa. In addition to DJing
Milton was working with at-risk teens in Cedar Rapids.

Then on, a trip back to Chicago a few years back, he was arrested and
convicted of murder. It turns out that before moving to Iowa, someone
had stolen a van containing all of Milton's gear. I don't know all the
details of what went down, but apparently Milton and others found the
guy who stole the van, beat him, and threw him out of an upper-story
window in a Chicago project.

All of the DanceMania guys grew up in very rough circumstances where
violence was common, but every one of those guys I met seemed very
chill and pleasant to hang out with, Milton included. I used to hang
out with Milton in his studio and help him with software such on his
computers, and he was always a complete sweetheart to me. It's really
hard to reconcile the Milton I knew with the crime he was convicted
of.

Mostly I feel bad for his wife and five children. By the time Milton
gets out his kids will mostly be grown. I hope that he survives
prison and is able to pick up the pieces of his life eventually.

This is from the long series of tapes Milton put out back in the day

thanks all-- some good tips. i'm digging the jpls
stuff (the release on clever, at least), and that
louderbach release (i don't know why i slept on
that!). and yeah... tom points out that omar-s is
representing the stripped down sound outta the d.

martin, any tips on those regis 12's would make me a
happy man. regis going minimal sounds right up my
alley. (he's actually already right up my alley, in
certain moods, anyhow.)

cheers,
d

hi matt,

it's rohformat001 (catnr rfm001), your local shop should most likely
have a copy. let me know wether you can find one or not, there's
currently some trouble with the distributor *sigh* so i'm crossing
fingers the vinyls

made it overseas. if not i'm pretty sure i'll find a way to get it there!

thanks about the mixes, new stuff coming up soon!

ronny

A friend of mine urged me to come to his house last night to hear some
great techno records he'd just bought.

One of the records he was most enthusiastic about was Ronny Pries 'Distant

He said it's that good you've just gotta let it play.

I have to agree that it's a great record, so if you haven't heard it yet
then check it out!

Nice one Ronny !
