I don't think there would be anything wrong at all if people moved to Detroit to do art, or urban farming or whatever. Places where people can live cheaply and have room to work are essential for the creation of new art. I don't think 'ruin porn' is very useful if that's all it is. But if you spend any time in Detroit, the ruination is pretty inescapable. To me it feels less like ruins and more like fallow land, as though all it's waiting for is the right spark. Beyond both these ideas -- Detroit as lurid icon of urban decay, and as unrealized potential -- there's something that the rest of the world tends to ignore, which is that Detroit has real people living there across the whole spectrum of human experience -- the desparate, the scary, the hopeful, the evil and the good. And somehow every 'good' thing that comes to Detroit doesn't really reach down to help the poorest of the poor. Re: (313) OT: Nice article about the current state of journalism about the D
Yea don't get me wrong, I'm all about people coming into communities and trying to make a difference, provided they are actually trying to contribute. As far as the squat scene, I have no idea. I've see it a bit here and there in Chicago (artist kids illegally living in storefronts). I do know that regular people end up doing most of the leg work in the U.S. for this kind of thing before officials catch on or are convinced to help. Occasionally developers will give rental discounts to people in the arts when they are trying to build up 'artist neighborhoods' to drive up business, and eventually housing prices. It's a mixture of things happening organically, and then business/political interests becoming involved in order to profit. Neighborhood 'cycles' are a fascinating subject, though, and unfortunately what is considered blighted or bad more often than not is just replaced with white and expensive. Gentrification is happening pretty fast in many U.S. cities, with things headed more towards a Paris-style model of the wealthy living inside the city and the poor pushed to the outlaying city suburbs. It's happening -extremely- fast in D.C., and many Chicago neighborhoods are becoming barely recognizable from 5-10 years ago. Very OT but it's an exciting subject. -Art On Thu, Nov 26, 2009 at 10:22 AM, Odeluga, Ken ken.odel...@dowjones.com wrote: It seems like time for some of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7aSypQmLRA Albeit sounds more and more ironic every year, to me anyway .. -Original Message- From: Robert Taylor [mailto:rdtay...@channel4.co.uk] Sent: Thursday, November 26, 2009 4:13 PM To: kent williams; Arturo Lopez Cc: Three-One-Three Subject: RE: (313) OT: Nice article about the current state of journalism about the D Berlin was in ruins and became a haven for artists. (313) OT Fu5k The BNP
Bit off topic and only for UK peoples, but this is kinda important. From the Hope Not Hate campaign. Despite widespread opposition Nick Griffin will be on Question Time this Thursday. The BBC have made their decision - they are willing to let a leader of a fascist Party on their flagship show. Last week the BNP agreed to change its constitution for fear of being found guilty of having a racist and illegal membership policy. On Sunday, Griffin attacked and abused his fellow panelists Bonnie Greer and Baroness Warsi for not being white. And yet the BBC still allow him on. Griffin's presence is a stain on the BBC. So I think we need to make a stand. On Thursday afternoon we're going to the BBC to deliver the Question Time presenter, David Dimbleby, thousands of messages of hope from our supporters. Your stories, your experiences and your belief in an open and tolerant society will send the strongest possible rejection of the BNP's message of hate. You can send your message of hope here: http://action.hopenothate.org.uk/questiontime The BNP's goal is to divide us. It's to whip up fear and hatred in our communities and then exploit the anger that they've induced. But we don't have to accept their hatred. m

Re: (313) OT Fu5k The BNP
Seeing as we're discussing this on-list, please could someone explain to me why boycotting Nick Griffin/exclusing him from a debate is the 'right' thing to do? From the opening few lines of the article in The Times: Its an editorial decision based on a feeling for what the public think, and its correct. In 2009 people expect to make their own minds up, and dont want to be cushioned from discussion, however problematic. Please can someone give me a measured response why this is not the way forward? I am happy to be convinced otherwise. I have yet to be presented with anything that challenges my standpoint. Seeing as we're discussing this on-list, please could someone explain to me why boycotting Nick Griffin/exclusing him from a debate is the 'right' thing to do? From the opening few lines of the article in The Times: It's an editorial decision based on a feeling for what the public think, and it's correct. In 2009 people expect to make their own minds up, and don't want to be cushioned from discussion, however problematic. Please can someone give me a measured response why this is not the way forward? I am happy to be convinced otherwise. I have yet to be presented with anything that challenges my standpoint. I also feel the panel will blow it. Sadly, in Sheffield we have a large bunch of neo-nazis (WNP/BPP/C18/ EDL), some of which are Griffin's hench men, anyone who wants to see what the real BNP are like is welcome to request a link from me because there's no way I'm putting it on a public list, the guys who run the site and be seen in pictures with Griffin and acting as his body guards. Not techno, but for fans of early dance music sounds, these two will be playing in Chi on Saturday. I've never seen them live, so I'm not sure if they are sticking to the old stuff or not but this might be interesting. Here's hoping we get some sweet WBMX action. -Art

I don't want to seem like a jerk by naming names, but I noticed a couple of NYC DJ friends of mine in Detroit this year sporting the razor cut reverse mullet as well. _ichie _awtin could be said to be rocking the Bruno as well, and even Ricardo Villalobos, but Ricardo redeems himself by turning it into a sweaty stringie mess the second he starts DJ'ing. While we're busting on DJ's looks, anyone else notice that Sven Vath is beginning to look a lot like Peter Stormare in Fargo -- you know, woodchipper guy? It's uncanny.

Re: (313) OT in pocket: Does anybody know about record shopping in india?
Sam Shipping in/out of India (or anywhere in this region) is a nightmare. You will pay a ton, but use DHL or FedEx (I'm in Dubai and haven't seen a UPS truck yet). The next step would be for you to pack it - like...really overly crazy pack it. Then, when you go to the FedEx Kinko's - have them put their packaging over it, including cushioning. I would also recommend putting a plastic bag inside of your packaging, putting your records in that bag and sealing it. It is not uncommon for packages to be left in the rain. And insure it. Umm. yeah. The main reason for this is because you have a box that is outside of normal regulations (size/weight). This isn't america or western europe, as I'm sure you are aware. Good luck in Bangalore. Be safe - there have been a rash of violent acts towards westerners up north, and it is quickly spreading south. -Mike On Mon, May 18, 2009 at 9:04 AM, Samuel Karmel samuel.kar...@gmail.com wrote: Hi As part of a spiritual enrichment exercise i am traveling to india -specifically bangalore I want to buy up various late 70s - 80s bollywood soundtracks on wax...peepz like bappi lahiri (disco dancer) some of the production is wacko synth madness. Not sure a new PSU's gonna do me any good, but maybe it wouldn't hurt to give it a whirl: - Thor, You must some serious carpet in your place! I would start off by checking the power supply of the unit I believe that the problem could be coming from there. You can try getting it replaced under warranty from Stanton. It's weird that you could build up enough static charge to fry it -- for one thing the chassis is grounded, so any electrical charge should have gone straight to ground. For another, all static-sensitive components (and there really shouldn't be many) should not be vulnernerable because the path of least resistance is through chassis ground.
(313) OT: Stanton SMX-301 DJ mixer zapped?!
Hello 313, Pardon the OT, but I know someone will have insight if they could hit me back offlist. I recently was cleaning my apartment, and this arc of static electricity the likes of which I've never seen jumped off my hand and into my mixer. The audio POPPED loudly and went dead. After that, it would power/light up and bump the speakers but it does not accept any input whatsoever. No bouncing levels, no audio (obviously), no headphone cueing, no booth output. Is this something that could be feasably fixed or should I get a new mixer? The SMX-301 is not a particularly expensive model, but if it's fixable maybe it makes sense to do so. Otherwise, might be time for a new mixer! E-mail me offlist with any insight, sorry bout the spam.

I spent all my time in Kings Cross while I was there. I had fun, but don't remember a lot of it. Never even saw the Opera House or anything else like that. www.SettleTheScore.org When we feel strongly about something, it is our natural desire to let others know. Cool. Glad you find ones that suit you - and thanks for the research, I will try to check out the SE100s as I'll be needing some ear phones myself soon I think. One thing puzzles me though: how did you mannage to return used in-ear ear phones?!?!? :) Ken -Original Message- From: darnistle [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 22, 2008 3:18 AM To: 313 Subject: Re: (313) OT: earbud recommendations? Update to this week-long drama: The Shure E4c-N earphones arrived in the mail. Though they are good earphones, they don't really hold a candle to the Shure SE100s. The Shure E4c-N has much more noticeable bass, but the mids and highs aren't as crisp and clear as the SE100s. Feeling disappointed and thwarted, I decided to return the E4C-Ns and buy the SE100s once again. This time, I experimented with the different earpads for the SE100 and found the right one for my ear. The increase in bass and overall richness was immediate. The bass now is very clear and I'm very surprised that these earphones are able to produce some of the really low bass in certain dubstep or techno tracks. So my final assessment is that the Sennheiser CX300s and the Shure E4C-N are pretty similar in quality, though the CX300s were a little less expensive. Either of them would be a very good replacement for the Sony MDR-EX71SL earphones. However, the SE100s win the prize for clarity and richness!!! This time, I decided to try some other brands and took the plunge and bought the Shure SE100s from a store in town. At $100 it was expensive, but I was curious to see if there was any significant increase in sound quality. The clarity and imaging were astounding!! Truly!! I didn't want to risk ripping the rubber cover since I wasn't sure if I'd keep the earphones. I never got to experiment to see if using different earpads would help with the bass problem. I convinced myself to return the earphones to the store because of the bass issue, but the sheer clarity of the sound haunted me for days after. Instead, I bought a pair of Sennheiser CX300s, which sounded just as good as my old Sonys. They aren't really sound isolating, but they deliver a good, even sound. No complaints at all. I've had the Sonys, cx300s and Shure E2C in the past and I have to say the CX400s I now have are probably better than all these. The E2cs are nice (sound and build) but the way in which the cables go over the ears is a little fiddly. robin... The Shure E4c-N earphones arrived in the mail. Sennheiser CX-300 will do the job very properly – although they're not very solid built. And, when you compare them with any Shure or M- audio, you'll see that they sound much better even though they're much cheaper! Very simple: I took them back to the store. The first place didn't ask why I was returning them. They simply issued the refund. The second place asked and I told them I wasn't happy with the sound quality. They didn't ask any more questions after that. Now that my ears got a taste of the really good stuff, they weren't havin' the Sennheisers, so I went online this evening and finally decided to buy the Shure E4c-N earphones today on Amazon.com ($89!!!), since they got even better reviews than the ones I tried a few days ago! Hello, I use the Shure ES210 and hve been liking those. They don't seem to be producing the e2c or e3c anymore. You'll probably be able to find them much cheaper else ware. http://store.shure.com/store/shure/en_US/DisplayProductDetailsPage/productID.105181400 Cheers, -b -- http://www.mummey.net
Re: (313) OT: earbud recommendations?
Funny that this topic should come up at this time. My favorite Sony MDR-EX71SL earbuds developed a short in the cord last week, so it was time to buy another pair. The last set lasted for more than two years, which is really good considering that I use them daily for hours at a time and am not as careful with them as I should be. This time, I decided to try some other brands and took the plunge and bought the Shure SE100s from a store in town. At $100 it was expensive, but I was curious to see if there was any significant increase in sound quality. The clarity and imaging were astounding!! Truly!! Listening to tracks I was well familiar with was like hearing them anew: all sorts of nuances I'd never heard before were suddenly very clear. The earphones also did an excellent job of blocking outside sounds. I felt like I was in a wonderfully exquisite aural cocoon. My only complaint about them was the lack of bass, even though I tried pushing the earpads further in my ear. It helped somewhat, but not as much as I would have expected. I thought to put on one of the alternate earpads to ensure a better fit, but had trouble getting the pads off. Problem is that those Shure earphones were SO good, I couldn't deny the massive difference in quality. I've tried earbuds, and the ones that were the best balance between price, sound, and comfort for me were the dirt cheap Koss: But earbuds in general bug me -- I haven't found any that were comfortable or held an acoustically valid seal in my ear canals, so my vote goes to these: http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-202-Headphones/dp/B65BP9/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8s=electronicsqid=1221441987sr=8-1 They're very light, only cost $25, and do a surprisingly good job cutting ambient noise. And they sound pretty good to me. I've spent too much on expensive headphones that have gotten broken or stolen, so if it leaves my house it has to be basically disposable. The HD202s have lasted 6 months riding around in my backpack and still look new, despite being light, plastic, and cheap looking. I'm done crying over Grado SR80s when I lose the earmuff and the plug goes wonky. TP told me that he DJ's with a telephone because they work, they're cheap, and no one wants to steal them.

Donnie James does all genres, so its very possible he did some hip-hop. He's been talking to Mike and them about putting out his first release, but its a slow process by his own personal design. He played a sampling of his tunes for me one day and every track was a different genre. All very very good. I'll left a message for Donnie to ask if that was his. I'll keep you posted as soon as I know. On Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 3:16 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Is Donnie James the hip hop guy who samples No UFOs? It's not any big prognostication to say that no matter what he actually release next, some people will say he's fallen off. (313) OT - e.s.t. Pianist Esbjorn Svensson Dies At 44
wow - I just found out about this a bit OT but I'm sure some of you on the list are into e.s.t. one of those young fresh jazz groups pushing things forward http://www.giantstep.net/news/817 e.s.t. Pianist Esbjorn Svensson Dies At 44 On Saturday June 14th, Esbjorn Svensson fell victim to a lethal diving accident outside of Vrmd, Sweden's archipelago near Stockholm. Svensson had been diving in a group at a landing stage and was later discovered at the bottom severely injured. The pianist and founder of e.s.t. (Esbjorn Svensson Trio) died at age 44. Renowned for bringing jazz to a young audience with influences as wide ranging as classical to funk, e.s.t.'s roots began to sprout in the 1980's, and eventually they released their debut album When Everyone Has Gone in 1993. The trio quickly rose to notoriety in the Swedish and Danish jazz communities. Esbjorn Svensson was awarded accolades, including Swedish Jazz musician of the Year (1996), Songwriter of the Year (1998), a Swedish Grammy for 1997's Winter in Venice, Trio of the Year by Jazzwise, the Hans Koller prize as European Artist of the Year and countless more. Musically, he was the light that lit the world because in what he did he was pushing boundaries, said Burkhard Hopper, EST's manager. His music inspired people in all corners of the world. http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/news.php?id=19464 RIP :_( MEK
