Good room, decent sound, but overrun with a bunch of drunken hipsters

Soundcloud, one of the better gigs I've heard from him in recent times:

(313) Juan Atkins - Electric Jungle

2012-12-09 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Blackmarket Records going for the 'lost' / 'unreleased' tracks gambit.

http://www.discogs.com/Juan-Atkins-Electric-Jungle-/release/4088314

At least one - 'Impulse' - has been released before though.

It was out on the 'Infiniti Collection' on Tresor, in '96.

In any case, they seem fine tracks to my ears, dated mostly by the obviously
real-time nature of the audio quality; which of course is not an aesthetic
fault.

(313) Juan Atkins on NPR

2012-04-14 Thread kent williams
Good: They talked to Juan. Bad: They talked to Moby. As though he is
an authority on anything beyond music licensing and vegan cupcakes.

http://www.npr.org/blogs/therecord/2012/04/13/150573065/kraftwerk-in-new-york-decades-of-influence-on-display

It was gated noise, Atkins says, referring to the sounds Kraftwerk
shaped with synthesizers. I heard those sounds and I'm like, 'Wow.'

I love this quote because really who besides synth nerds and studio
rats would know what 'gated noise' is?

Spoke to Linkwood before the gig, he was sh*ting as he's not played

He played well. Possibly better mixing than Trusme but played in a
more pitched-up kinda way. Like a house dj playing techno, but I
consider that to be a Detroit related style anyway.

I enjoyed the night, even though many people didn't bother coming
because Juan didn't show. Trusme has Rick Wade, Andres and Pepe
Bradock playing in Manchester over the next couple of months too.

Trusme also has a load of new records coming out soon. The latest
hotness (Virbrations) is on those Gilles Peterson 12s that have just
come out on Defected.

Cool, thanks robin I'll let him know job well done:)

Linkwood is releasing a split EP of House/Detroit with me in the near
future, but I will keep that under wraps until I have dates. But we're not
far off.

He has a tune coming out soon on prime numbers.

He is also working on the next firecracker and an LP (which he asked me not
to talk about yet)

Possibly some material working with Trusme too but no real details on that.
Sorry to be a bit vague.

I will say this though Linkwood under a previous pseudonym was called Pylot
and he and I played a live-ish set at a public life 313list party back in
2001.
This set is up on www.goneloko.co.uk

(313) juan atkins (ny) - tonight review

2007-10-06 Thread Michael Kuszynski
So I go to the a show quietly advertised as having Juan Atkins play at
'200 Orchard' on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Three semi-brooklyn looking hipster guys, one of whom wouldn't stop
playing with his hair, mixing old (old) Aphex Twin with proto trance
disco tech-house (beat matching anyone?), to a poor remix of an 808
State track, to what I gather was yet another bad remix (get a trend
here?) of Berlin Sunrise.

Apparently Juan Atkins will not play (Just got home).

As much as I do player hate, and as much as I want to extend a hand to
the guys who put this together (Lauren Flax of some sort of Chicago
association?), overall, despite all my bickering, in all honesty, it
just would've been nice to have a night of real techno, play by people
who really know how to play it.

Not minimal, not glitchy, not
let-reaktor-go-haywire-andpress-record-and-let-a-wonky-kick-and-snappy-snare/clap
drawl on on random arpeggio.

Just straight up techno.

Adios Detroit.

damn, that would be one expensive track to license

Juan still owns publishing on it - at least part of it
I might be wrong but I think Fantasy records set up Deep Space Music

Cybotron's Clear

Even if he sold the publishing rights he'd still be getting money from
the songwriting rights. (royalties are usually split 50% between the
owner of the publishing rights and the songwriter, if the publishing
rights are owned by somebody else that is, correct me if I'm wrong!)

I'm surprised at how much other artists give props and not always the
artists you think - Annie was giving big props to Derrick May and
Underground Resistance in Aus interviews on her recent tour. It's up
to them to carry the legacy and educate new punters on the heritage
of this music.

I think it's a bit like the Oscars. You have to put it in
perspective. Do the best films get nominated, the finest
actors always? It's a good thing but is not always representative.
Denzil should have won an Oscar years ago...( Though I will
be happy if Heath Ledger gets something for Brokeback
Mountain. ;)) The Grammy's are so off kilter most of the time
it's hard to take some of results seriously but it would be
nice for Juan, though obviously not what he fully deserves...
Most of the dance acknowledged by the Grammys is so wack
(Thunderpuss!) no one outside the US corporate arena could
 take it seriously.

Ultimately it's a nice recognition and nothing more. If it happens,
excellent, but to hope for an equivalent to a life time achievement award is
just silly. Many of the most innovative artists and thinkers have only been
appreciated posthumously or in their dieing days. Not to say we shouldn't
try to lobby for their recognition, but to hope that Juan Atkins will be
recognised as something more than the guy who was sampled in Sir Mix-A-Lot
and Missy Elliot in the major music industry's consciousness is hoping a bit
much IMO. Why don't we try to thwart Clear Channel first, and then hope for
'Clear'. That said, if you are one of the few who can vote, do it!

Oh, and what's up with June Atkinson's comments on this:
http://www.discogs.com/release/162067 Prolly nothing to do with Juan, but
silly none the less.

i wasn't being churlish.
i consider the world of commercial music and awards nights as one big giant
pile of wombat poop. i sort of thought that on this matter i was vaguely
on the same wavelength as others on this list, underground resistance and
others interested in independent/underground dance music.

the time for techno to get the recognition and dues it deserves was 1989
and it did - millions around the world danced their asses off to detroit
music. thousands had their lives changed and started buying the records,
djing, making the stuff, starting internet boards, wearing UR t-shirts and
making pilgrimages to detroit and putting on underground parties. how namy
people turn up each year for the demf (or whatever it''s called)?

do you think techno or juan is getting their dues when a fake industry
award show mentions his name 20 years after the fact.
an industry that ignores you unless it wants to steal your songs (knights
of the jaguar) and we're still begging for their acceptance and
recognition.

Another stupid question, whats actually the point? I can't personally see
how voting for a track that sampled Juan Atkins is giving support to him
beyond possibly landing him another royalties pay cheque from the extra
radio play/sales it'll get. Sorry if I sound like an old negative bitter
miser, but its not like the kids are gonna be snapping up the Metroplex back

RE: (313) Juan Atkins Up For A Grammy

2006-01-12 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

yeah, just to clarify

How do I qualify to become a Voting member?
You need to have creative or technical credit on a minimum of six tracks
(or their equivalent) in at least one voting discipline and the album must
have been commercially released in the United States. Qualifying tracks can
be on one album or a combination of albums. In the music video and craft
categories you must have at least six commercial or promotional
videos/albums released in the United States.

Who does not qualify as a Voting member?
Applicants who are credited as Executive Producer, Assistant Producer, AR,
and Production Coordinators are examples of non-voting categories. If you
think you might not qualify, call Member Services at 310.392.3777 or your
local chapter to discuss your questions.

so it's up to all the members of The Recording Academy that have voting
privileges

sorry Mike - were with you in spirit on this one but I don't think there's
much most of us can do to influence this vote
it's one of those behind closed doors type of things

Besides qualifying to become a member, you must also cough up a bunch of
cash every year to get voting rights and the other perks?. I would love
to see Juan walk up on that stage and win an award, but until they give him
credit by winning for best ELECTRO/Techno record what's the point. The
uneducated masses don't know electro from hip-hop from Jazz and probably
never will. What would be great is if he wins he could go up and blast the
audience with a quick dose of knowledge like The music Industry sucks and
you are all sheep!!!. Only problem with that is, he's not Kanye West so no
one would even listen.

Hi Guys, I think its time to see reality...
Of course I would prefer to vote directly for Juan for an electro track he
did...But when u vote for Missy, it means you vote for Juan producer
qualities, specially for an old track, it means, he still timeless producer.
After that I don't understand why we can't vote for Juan thru Missy Elliot
track...Why she doesn't sample him...its the best way to say, that guy rocks
! His music Rocks...If they can do a popular hip hop track with an electro
sample, it shows the power of our music...
I'm not a sampling guy, don't really like that, but, the ones who are saying
its a shame to sample techno to do some kind of other music, are in extasy
for Moodyman music, or the same they have Fix from Orlando Voorn in their
all time favourite ( I'm one of these ones ;-)...
Music is Music, always recycled, transformed, re-born...sometimes in a good,
sometimes in a bad way...we have to admit this fact...
So when Mad Mike is showing up to help friend to get what he deserve...from
Hip-hop or techno, or electro scene...I think its a good thing...
Its maybe better if Juan is coming to get his award than ABBA to get an
award for madona's sampling ;-).
So guys, music is more complicated than just Yes or not, Black or white,
nothing or everything...I think than its not a shame (and finally very
funny) to be the best hip-hop producer when you're doing electro...Maybe
next year it should be Grand Master Flash or...some of you ??? Thats power
of good music.
...just to remind you...Mister Lill Louis did an hip hop oriented album,
and, finally was not a bad one...
...all these words to say, I'll vote, and will be proud for him if Juan is
winning...

Only problem with that is, he's not Kanye West so no
one would even listen.

yeah, just to clarify

How do I qualify to become a Voting member?
You need to have creative or technical credit on a minimum of six tracks
(or their equivalent) in at least one voting discipline and the album must
have been commercially released in the United States. Qualifying tracks
can

be on one album or a combination of albums. In the music video and craft
categories you must have at least six commercial or promotional
videos/albums released in the United States.

Who does not qualify as a Voting member?
Applicants who are credited as Executive Producer, Assistant Producer,
AR,

and Production Coordinators are examples of non-voting categories. If you
think you might not qualify, call Member Services at 310.392.3777 or your
local chapter to discuss your questions.

so it's up to all the members of The Recording Academy that have voting
privileges

I think it's a bit like the Oscars. You have to put it in
perspective. Do the best films get nominated, the finest actors
always? It's a good thing but is not always representative.
Denzil should have won an Oscar years ago...( Though I will be happy
if Heath Ledger gets something for Brokeback Mountain. ;)) The
Grammy's are so off kilter most of the time it's hard to take some of
results seriously but it would be nice for Juan, though obviously not

Yes! This is the one I've been banging on about!

Check check check! It's 4 tracks of brilliant detroit techno.
Can't see what there is not to like about it!

 I love it anyway.

Each of the four tracks as good as the last. I'm sure a favourite will

Yes! This is the one I've been banging on about!

Check check check! It's 4 tracks of brilliant detroit techno.
Can't see what there is not to like about it!

 I love it anyway.

Just giving it the first proper listen, and am pretty stunned. It's

Each of the four tracks as good as the last. I'm sure a favourite will
emerge, but at the moment they're all sounding great to my ears. I was

RE: (313) Juan Atkins officially awarded for the 'International achievment'

2004-09-18 Thread yussel
I have half a second, so let me say this...

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not shy about voicing an opinion,
whether good or bad (and i think i spend a lot more personal time talking
about things I like).

Like most everyone, I'd say there's my online person, in-person person and
professional person- each one being a little more polite than the one
before.

i still stand by what i said. i don't think other people had any business
getting involved with fetroit/Michigan civics issues when they don't live
in the place, come from that place, or know any of the factors involved.
perhaps you
think that my publicly declaring the reasons why juan shouldn't have been
included with derrick and kevin were out of line. maybe it would have been
enough to just tell people to mind their own business. if i was merely
trying to 'expose' someone's dirty laundry or 'prove' how in the loop i
am, i would have just spouted off right away. i didn't. i did hint that
perhaps there was reasons for juan's exclusion, but evidentally some
people can't take a hint. whatever- its just my opinion anyways. but
nothing i said was private knowledge. it's all public.

i'll admit that the way i said things were probably a little flame heavy
(thats that on-line persona that most people have), but speaking up when i
think something is wack is certainly a right i maintain, on this list, or
in person, or (when it's acceptable), in the print.

I don't think that to do my job properly, i have to constantly behave in a
consistant manner in my personal life. when i put juan on the cover of
urb, with derrick and kevin last year, it was to tell a 20 year old story
that is worth repeating. but- perhaps perpetuating the 'big three', as all
journalist in this field do, is what contributes to the widely held
assumption that none of the individuals should be allowed to exist
without the others. that's why i was sure to pose that question to them,
in person, and then print the response. maybe i also feel that it is my
personal responsibility to counter some of the 'myth making' that is
inherent in my job, by stating the contrary in my other communications to
the world.

also- be aware that a lot of my more skeptical opinions of people comes
from working with them on a professional level (or lack of) both as a
journalist and before that as a promoter. i never have and never will air
that dirty laundry in public as it usually involves other people's money.

so i guess this has actually turned into my response in full to this
debate. if anyone would like to further discuss this, please do it
privately (unless you think it's something that would benifit the whole
list. i'm the last person who should tell anyone to take things private.)

have a good weekend all.

We are not our jobs.

Just because Josh works for an techno-related publication, and this is a
techno-related list, it doesn't mean that his posts on here in anyway
represent his position or profession. It's not like he signs his emails

Re: (313) Juan Atkins officially awarded for the 'International achievment'

2004-09-17 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I think it's silly to compare - like saying who is more beautiul J Lo or
Halle Berry or, um, Christy Turlington?
Like saying who is the best rapper of all time - this person or this person.
Art is not a sport.
I don't think this is the place to play divide and conquer - even
unwittingly. I very much doubt that there is any of that negativity.
On a global level these awards, while symbolic, count for little - the
records are the legacy and all three have made some incredible music and
influenced many worldwide. No one can dispute that.

i was keepin quiet, but this is a f**king travesty.

what has juan done besides make some special records 20 YEARS AGO!!!

derrick and kevin deserve this award, because they've put their time,
energy and $$$ into making the Detroit festival happen. but no matter what
they do, they'll forever be tied to juan- the man who couldn't even make
his DEMF gig (and hundreds of other gigs)

The man who as recently as this summer blew off throwing the opening pitch
at a tigers game and i believe skipped the Metro times Motor City Music
Awards after they flew him to Detroit to recieve a lifetime achievement
 award.

Sure, the guy made some influential records. So friggin what. If I were
Derrick or Kevin, i'd be disgusted, that after all their recent efforts,
they still have to share the spotlight with a person who has done nothing
to benifit the city in the past decade.

All because some European idiots with too much time on thier hands and a
collection of ancient texhno wax felt that made them experts on Detroit
 civics.

 friggin shame

---

Hi Yussel... First let me say you that if you can keep polited your post, it
will be more valuable and respectable.

In place of a 'Stupid European', let me explain you why your post is a total
 non-sense.

1/ Since 20 years now, Techno music is submited to us 'stupid europeans' as a
 style
invented and developped by Mr Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson.

2/ Money put into Movement by Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson is not the
subject. Not anymore than Juan Atkins is present or not at some partys/events.

3/If you read carefully the letter writing for the guestbook in support to
Juan
Atkins, you will find the reach point of this support. Juan Atkins was excluded
from this 'awards' due to his location. Not due to his participation or not to
the Techno music in Detroit or anywhere in the world since twenty years or one
 year.

4/The recent efforts of Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson are totally
respectable
and we are (stupid europeans) in admiration on their job to keep Detroit
Movement festival alive. Again, it's totally out of the subject.

5/They will be disgusted to share the award with Juan Atkins? Since the
begining
of Techno Music, they was not 'disgusted' to share the spotlight with the
title
of 'originators' and this title is certainly a part of their success and the
'international achievment'. Even if it's a minimal part.
And again, BIG RESPECT to Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson.

And I'd like to remember you that 'stupid europeans' have done a lot for
Detroit
Techno. Do you remember labels like Buzz Records, RS, Tresor, ... And they
continue to do it. Majority of peoples who have signed the guestbook are
europeans who keep Detroit techno at a high level in Europe.

I don't know where you have finding any informations about our 'too much time
in
 our hands'...
But let me say you that it is not your problem. Please put your
attention in your own life and not in our own life.
Too, we are not only fans of 'ancient techno wax'... And we are not
'experts'...
But we are supporters and fans of Detroit Techno and this give us the right to
defend something we trust and for what we have passion and love. For your
information, it's an american who have writing the letter in support to Juan
 Atkins.

You have the right to don't agree with our action, but again I ask you only
one
thing. Be polited. 313 list is not a place for war between races or locations
 where you are from.

A last word, I respect deeper all americans and all others on this planet. For
me we are all the same, black, white, yellow, pink/green/orange if you want !
But some peoples have what we call the respect and the education some have not

years ago when i felt Urb was going downhill... but you're totally
right i haven't checked in lately. I always read the Scott Sterling
bits back before it got more wide and RB stars were on the cover. I'm
not anti Urb, i'm anti blanket tabloid-y Jerry Springer Show dissing of
anyone you feel like hating on. I am anti- any music journalist who
just thinks they have to be a bitter trash talker in order to be
thought of as 'in the know', or worse, someone who has to trash talk in
order to make us ignorant zombies look past the haze of blind fan-dom.
Most of us here can.

It just seemed to me like you're so dead set on debunking anyone
genuine love for the music that you want to come after these artists
for reasons that frankly I don't think that many people give a care
about... I don't think 313 is a place for exposing all the warts you
know and want everyone else to know, if it's irrelevant to the records
and the music.. it seems like you feel it's your duty to keep trotting
that stuff out as soon as someone is getting praised for something.
it's like you think you're doing 313 some great service as a
hard-hitting investigative reporter that will bring The Light down to
us ignorant sycophant simpletons. I just wanted to tell you it's
annoying to see it played out over and over. New day, different thread,
but the same haytin.

I think it's lame you just have also cast us all in a single
brushstroke as not up for debate, not willing to criticize, that's a
pretty oversimplified view... some of just have an internal ill hater
regulation meter, where yours is apparently in need of a tune up.

i'm sure you somehow think that your little college radio show somehow
makes more of an impact than a national magazine that gives a
consistant

spotlight to underground music.

all i can do is laugh, that's a good one! come one, we've met, it's
funny you think i'd think that... I don't think i'm making an impact
on sh!t except on how much of my paycheck I spend on bandwidth transfer
each month.. ha. Frankly i have no delusions of making a differece
beyond a fairly niche group of listeners in town and online, and while
i'd love national impact, it's not my lifelong goal and I have no
delusions of grandeur about what i'm doing. I'm a nobody! I like
DJing and digging and the fact that i have an opportunity to share
classic music I find interesting every week is something i do for free,
and something i'm grateful I have a forum for, however miniscule it is.
The site is basically just a ghetto blog for audio files. By
contrast, Urb will always reach 10 million more people, if only
because it's advertiser supported so it has funding so it has legs,
reach, marketing, momentum. That's what it's for. That's why Urb
exists. I'm not saying Urb doesn't have a right to exist, it fills a
niche for what it is, and it's great people can have writing for Urb as
a fulltime job, cause you're into music like we all are, but you're
getting paid to write for it and that's awesome, actually, if you like
what Urb is all about. Playing/unearthing/mixing records is, however,
more fun to me than writing about them, but to each his own and I am
glad there are both writers and DJs. And people who do both. But just
so you know my show is making NO more than a tiny tiny difference, but
one i'm into making, and that's a personal decision I'm comfortable
with. I'm not chasing fame as a DJ (obviously! i missed that boat 10
