I don't think there would be anything wrong at all if people moved to Detroit to do art, or urban farming or whatever. Places where people can live cheaply and have room to work are essential for the creation of new art. I don't think 'ruin porn' is very useful if that's all it is. But if you spend any time in Detroit, the ruination is pretty inescapable. To me it feels less like ruins and more like fallow land, as though all it's waiting for is the right spark. Beyond both these ideas -- Detroit as lurid icon of urban decay, and as unrealized potential -- there's something that the rest of the world tends to ignore, which is that Detroit has real people living there across the whole spectrum of human experience -- the desparate, the scary, the hopeful, the evil and the good. Re: (313) OT: Nice article about the current state of journalism about the D
Yea don't get me wrong, I'm all about people coming into communities and trying to make a difference, provided they are actually trying to contribute. As far as the squat scene, I have no idea. I've see it a bit here and there in Chicago (artist kids illegally living in storefronts). I do know that regular people end up doing most of the leg work in the U.S. for this kind of thing before officials catch on or are convinced to help. Occasionally developers will give rental discounts to people in the arts when they are trying to build up 'artist neighborhoods' to drive up business, and eventually housing prices. It's a mixture of things happening organically, and then business/political interests becoming involved in order to profit. Neighborhood 'cycles' are a fascinating subject, though, and unfortunately what is considered blighted or bad more often than not is just replaced with white and expensive. Gentrification is happening pretty fast in many U.S. cities, with things headed more towards a Paris-style model of the wealthy living inside the city and the poor pushed to the outlaying city suburbs. It's happening -extremely- fast in D.C., and many Chicago neighborhoods are becoming barely recognizable from 5-10 years ago. Very OT but it's an exciting subject. -Art On Thu, Nov 26, 2009 at 10:22 AM, Odeluga, Ken ken.odel...@dowjones.com wrote: It seems like time for some of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7aSypQmLRA Albeit sounds more and more ironic every year, to me anyway .. -Original Message- From: Robert Taylor [mailto:rdtay...@channel4.co.uk] Sent: Thursday, November 26, 2009 4:13 PM To: kent williams; Arturo Lopez Cc: Three-One-Three Subject: RE: (313) OT: Nice article about the current state of journalism about the D Berlin was in ruins and became a haven for artists. Seeing as we're discussing this on-list, please could someone explain to me why boycotting Nick Griffin/exclusing him from a debate is the 'right' thing to do? From the opening few lines of the article in The Times: Its an editorial decision based on a feeling for what the public think, and its correct. In 2009 people expect to make their own minds up, and dont want to be cushioned from discussion, however problematic. Please can someone give me a measured response why this is not the way forward? I am happy to be convinced otherwise. I have yet to be presented with anything that challenges my standpoint. I don't want to seem like a jerk by naming names, but I noticed a couple of NYC DJ friends of mine in Detroit this year sporting the razor cut reverse mullet as well. _ichie _awtin could be said to be rocking the Bruno as well, and even Ricardo Villalobos, but Ricardo redeems himself by turning it into a sweaty stringie mess the second he starts DJ'ing. While we're busting on DJ's looks, anyone else notice that Sven Vath is beginning to look a lot like Peter Stormare in Fargo -- you know, woodchipper guy? It's uncanny.

Re: (313) OT in pocket: Does anybody know about record shopping in india?
Sam Shipping in/out of India (or anywhere in this region) is a nightmare. You will pay a ton, but use DHL or FedEx (I'm in Dubai and haven't seen a UPS truck yet). The next step would be for you to pack it - like...really overly crazy pack it. Then, when you go to the FedEx Kinko's - have them put their packaging over it, including cushioning. I would also recommend putting a plastic bag inside of your packaging, putting your records in that bag and sealing it. It is not uncommon for packages to be left in the rain. And insure it. Umm. yeah. The main reason for this is because you have a box that is outside of normal regulations (size/weight). This isn't america or western europe, as I'm sure you are aware. Good luck in Bangalore. Be safe - there have been a rash of violent acts towards westerners up north, and it is quickly spreading south. -Mike On Mon, May 18, 2009 at 9:04 AM, Samuel Karmel samuel.kar...@gmail.com wrote: Hi As part of a spiritual enrichment exercise i am traveling to india -specifically bangalore I want to buy up various late 70s - 80s bollywood soundtracks on wax...peepz like bappi lahiri (disco dancer) some of the production is wacko synth madness. I recently was cleaning my apartment, and this arc of static electricity the likes of which I've never seen jumped off my hand and into my mixer. The audio POPPED loudly and went dead. After that, it would power/light up and bump the speakers but it does not accept any input whatsoever. No bouncing levels, no audio (obviously), no headphone cueing, no booth output. Is this something that could be feasably fixed or should I get a new mixer? The SMX-301 is not a particularly expensive model, but if it's fixable maybe it makes sense to do so. Otherwise, might be time for a new mixer! E-mail me offlist with any insight, sorry bout the spam.

Sennheiser CX-300 will do the job very properly – although they're not very solid built. The earphones also did an excellent job of blocking outside sounds. I felt like I was in a wonderfully exquisite aural cocoon. My only complaint about them was the lack of bass, even though I tried pushing the earpads further in my ear. It helped somewhat, but not as much as I would have expected. I thought to put on one of the alternate earpads to ensure a better fit, but had trouble getting the pads off. I didn't want to risk ripping the rubber cover since I wasn't sure if I'd keep the earphones. I never got to experiment to see if using different earpads would help with the bass problem. I convinced myself to return the earphones to the store because of the bass issue, but the sheer clarity of the sound haunted me for days after. Instead, I bought a pair of Sennheiser CX300s, which sounded just as good as my old Sonys. They aren't really sound isolating, but they deliver a good, even sound. No complaints at all. Problem is that those Shure earphones were SO good, I couldn't deny the massive difference in quality. Now that my ears got a taste of the really good stuff, they weren't havin' the Sennheisers, so I went online this evening
Re: (313) OT: earbud recommendations?
Update to this week-long drama: The Shure E4c-N earphones arrived in the mail. Though they are good earphones, they don't really hold a candle to the Shure SE100s. The Shure E4c-N has much more noticeable bass, but the mids and highs aren't as crisp and clear as the SE100s. Feeling disappointed and thwarted, I decided to return the E4C-Ns and buy the SE100s once again. This time, I experimented with the different earpads for the SE100 and found the right one for my ear. The increase in bass and overall richness was immediate. The bass now is very clear and I'm very surprised that these earphones are able to produce some of the really low bass in certain dubstep or techno tracks. So my final assessment is that the Sennheiser CX300s and the Shure E4C-N are pretty similar in quality, though the CX300s were a little less expensive. Either of them would be a very good replacement for the Sony MDR-EX71SL earphones. However, the SE100s win the prize for clarity and richness!!! It is really worth paying the extra money for such a marked improvement in the sound quality!! Making the effort to try the different earpads will pay off when you find the ones that fit your ears in just the right way. {}0+| darnistle wrote: Funny that this topic should come up at this time. I've tried earbuds, and the ones that were the best balance between price, sound, and comfort for me were the dirt cheap Koss: But earbuds in general bug me -- I haven't found any that were comfortable or held an acoustically valid seal in my ear canals, so my vote goes to these: http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-202-Headphones/dp/B65BP9/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8s=electronicsqid=1221441987sr=8-1 They're very light, only cost $25, and do a surprisingly good job cutting ambient noise. And they sound pretty good to me. I've spent too much on expensive headphones that have gotten broken or stolen, so if it leaves my house it has to be basically disposable. The HD202s have lasted 6 months riding around in my backpack and still look new, despite being light, plastic, and cheap looking. I'm done crying over Grado SR80s when I lose the earmuff and the plug goes wonky. TP told me that he DJ's with a telephone because they work, they're cheap, and no one wants to steal them.

Donnie James does all genres, so its very possible he did some hip-hop. He's been talking to Mike and them about putting out his first release, but its a slow process by his own personal design. He played a sampling of his tunes for me one day and every track was a different genre. All very very good. I'll left a message for Donnie to ask if that was his. I'll keep you posted as soon as I know. On Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 3:16 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Is Donnie James the hip hop guy who samples No UFOs? Drexciya's identity was kept under wraps for two reasons -- the people that knew were asked to keep quiet and did, and because Drexciya were famous to at most a couple thousand people world wide - whatever prominence they achieved, they achieved it inside the dance music scene, with a penumbra of renown amongst the chinstrokers who read The Wire.. Thanks to Pitchfork et al, Burial is a pop star to a load of kids who don't know two-step from happy hardcore. Not necessarily a bad thing, but like rich Americans appropriating indigenous music from around the world to make a buck, any time something breaks out to a larger audience, it loses its context, and becomes devalued artistically even as its value as a commodity increases. Plus, blowing up is a two-edged sword. Being the flavor of the month means next month you won't be. While it's a good thing when artists can make a living from their art, once they become ubiquitous they have to deal with living in a hall of mirrors -- their detractors, their imitators, their record labels demands of duplicating past success. When a bazillion people have glommed onto your art as something they regard as 'theirs' your own worst competition is what you did yourself a few years back. It's not any big prognostication to say that no matter what he actually release next, some people will say he's fallen off. RE: (313) My Zoom H4 recorder as terrorist tool (was Re: (313) OT: Portable Recorder (same question as always))
On the other hand Kent, when I recently passed through Newark on my way back from Colombia - I naturally fully expected to be at worst detained for a few days, especially because I had this small 'sinister-looking' ('sinister looking' if you're a homeland security automaton, that is) notebook-sized box, in peculiar brushed gold colour, with a few dials and many levers. It's a BOSS BR-600, the latest in BOSS's portable recorder line. When the 'What is that?' question came, I was fully prepared to have to spark it up and give a little demo. But they just said 'have a nice day'. OnT: I don't think much of the recorder for lengthy recordings - the proprietory file format architecture creates problems in transferring the data easily. However for 'song-by-song' sessions - meaning shorter (smaller) individual files I've found it to be fine. Even after turning it on, explaining it was an audio recorder, they still had to call in 2 levels of management to decide it was OK to fly with. I wonder if they changed the design on the H2 because too many people thought the H4 looked like a Tazer.

RE: (313) OT: Portable Recorder (same question as always)
FFS, I use my work email with 313, we use read receipts, sometimes I forget to turn it off. No big deal! It's not because I want to see who is reading the email. As I said before, get over it! Find something new to moan about.
