Re: (313) Movement 2013
+1 on the underground sound system and visual layout, it sounded AMAZING compared to previous years. That said, I felt there was a bit too much soundbleed between the Electric Forest and Red Bull/Main Stage areas, honestly. And while slightly less so, some soundbleed was still noticeable between the RB/Main area and the Made in Detroit stage setup -- which also kind of shocked me with the sheer amount of house music that was played throughout most people's sets. It created a sort of cognitive dissonance for me, based on the talent booked this year and what I've come to expect from the Made in Detroit area at previous festivals. Now, I'm an old-school and now-reformed househead who has no trouble singing along with 99% of the anthems (it's a soul thing, a body, thing, et al), but that's totally NOT what I'm flying to Detroit to listen to every year. I was kind of disappointed that there wasn't nearly as much minimal or even militant-sounding techno as I'm used to being exposed to -- especially from new (or at least undiscovered-to-me) artists -- at this year's Movement. Nicole Moudaber's set was one of the standout surprises for me; hearing a set like hers that blows me away and I instantly fall in love with is one of my favorite things about the festival, and for that, I'm extremely grateful. To hear a woman playing such a hardcore, relentlessly banging set made me both proud and hopeful that the whole female DJs are just gimmicks mindset will eventually fade out of the public's musical consciousness, though how long that'll take is anyone's guess...DJ Minx had her audience on lockdown as well, but I thought Magda's festival set was kind of meh this year (though her afterparty set delivered everything I'd hoped to hear earlier that day, so I really shouldn't complain...). Despite having tickets to the Bass Ain't on The Boat afterparty (because hey, The Upbeats! They flew all the way from NZ - when am I gonna get THAT opportunity again?), it got relocated to a less pedestrian-friendly spot than the original boat setup had been, so the only one I actually made it to was the Life and Death Detroit gig on Sunday at St. Andrew's Hall.. and oh my GOD, so glad I had my earplugs in!! Nothing can compare to being massaged from my scalp to the soles of my feet by a well-engineered wall of sound in the wee hours of the morning. It took me a couple hours to realize there was a different stage setup downstairs, and I was pleasantly surprised at the level of sound distinction/speaker muffling between the two (even moreso because one was essentially stacked right on top of the other, with the venue above packed to capacity with people dancing and everything that wasn't tied down vibrating along with the beat). Cheers to all the sound engineers, artists, volunteers and talent bookers who pulled this year's level of professionalism off -- especially the massive sound, camera and lighting rigs, nicely designed visual set-ups, streaming video/sound recordings via be-at.tv, Red Bull software/hardware demo room near the Underground stage, etc. Plus, everyone booked at the festivals and the only afterparty I went to seemed to be playing during their assigned slots, and each artist's gear looked like it got swapped out in a timely and safe manner between sets. There weren't any last-minute schedule changes due to talent not being able to get into the country or missing a flight (that I'm aware of, anyway), which I know has caused some headaches for Paxahau in the past. All of the stuff mentioned above requires massive amounts of coordination, party-throwing experience and teamwork to pull off seamlessly, and I know from personal experience how hard that is... especially by day 3, when everyone's sleep-deprived and hungover to the Nth degree. :) Didn't see any people passing out from heatstroke this time around, and the crowd seemed a bit smaller than it was during my last visit in 2011, which was... what, nearly 100k attendees? Curious to know how many people actually went this year... at any rate, it was a vacation well-spent! Hi Fred- Long time 313 lurker here. I just wanted to add some feedback: - Loved KDJ -- especially the fact that he actually spun vinyl. I think he even played some Genesis (Phil Collins era no less) in that crazy set. - Richie Hawtin was really fun. I enjoyed the whole thing. - DJ Minx! Amazing. That woman can command an audience. - Audion -- loved Audion live. He really took advantage of the Red Bull Academy sound. - Dan Bell -- great groove in his set. Made in Detroit's sound was perfect for his set. (And vinyl again!). I can't believe I've never seen him DJ. - Rrose -- unbelievable. My favorite set of the festival despite the crowded underground stage/weather. I was a little disappointed with the MID sound system on Monday. It didn't do justice to what Carlos Souffront had to offer. Detroit notes: Drove by the Packard Plant. I was sad to see how it's deteriorated in the past (almost 20 years). Loved the Heidelberg Project. I'm so glad it's still there (at least in part). Back to lurking…. :-) -Suzane On Sunday, 26. May 2013 at 14:01, Fred Heutte wrote: How y'all feeling out there? Definitely agree! My comments only pertained to trying to obtain SPECIFIC (limited quantity) records that you already know you want. However, rest assured you will find some vinyl goodness at Detroit Threads during festival weekend. ~dp On Fri, May 10, 2013 at 2:40 PM, John Sokolowski jrsokolow...@hotmail.com wrote: One exception is certainly Detroit Threads. Some of these are also exclusive to Detroit, such as Theo's spray painted Skteches, Deepchord DEMF editions, etc. And then on top of that you have people like KDJ who pull out a box full of mint copies of Shades of Jae and JAN to sell at the festival. Sadly, due to rising costs, poor US market, and poor US distributors, the brutal truth is that most of the best new Detroit records are now ONLY available in Europe; basically, although I live in Chicago, when I want new Detroit music, I order from Juno, Boomkat and Hardwax. I don't even bother checking US stores anymore if I am looking for specific records, though of course I do shop at Gramaphone here in Chicago from time to time as well. It seems that the whole EDM popularity over here has not helped with the US vinyl market for underground house and techno at all. I had hoped that increasing vinyl sales would help things, but I can only assume that the rising popularity of vinyl is limited more to indie rock type music, here in the US... ~David On Thu, May 9, 2013 at 10:14 PM, Richard Hester gwrenc...@sbcglobal.net wrote: Unless you happen to be in Berlin, sad to say...

Re: (313) Movement, Music and Detroit
Thanks for the suggestions! I've always wanted to check out Stormy Records, but Saturday has traditionally been the day I make the trek out to Flat, Black and Circular in East Lansing then Encore in Ann Arbor on the way back to Detroit, time permitting, before I check out the festival. Perhaps I'll skip Ann Arbor this year and do Dearborn instead. Regardless, over the course of the weekend I'd like to ensure that I go to stores that carry Detroit techno, since Detroit is still the best place for me to shop for it. Yes... I thought everyone had heard of Delta 9 and Danny tha Wildchild. I read over almost all of the names...probably only 5 or 6 that I recognized. Most of these guys are the locals in each city represented. Mark Anthony was a pretty good disco house DJ in the late 90s...But I am going to assume that most of this is [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is one of them things where each DJ gets an hour, with the exception of the headlines who probably get 2. I see no signs of Paul Johnson, DJ Slip, DJ Funk, Mark Almaria, or Terry Mullan, who used to be all over Chicago's rave fliers along side Delta 9 and DtWC. This appears to be typical behavior of the mid to late 90s rave fliers, with out all the talent and big names. With 19 stages and 3 days of work, I have a feeling that there is going to be a huge let down and a massive sucking sound. A lot of production companies are going to lose $$. Alas, I haven't heard of them either! Of the all the many artists on the memf and the other Xemf link (deleted all the mails so I can't remember what that was) I had heard of exactly one on each (and I did look properly as a sort of game). Then, when I read the description on memf, I realised that their Karizma was not the same one I was thinking of! Of course it obvious that the line ups were local or US national rave DJs and I wouldn't have heard of them. But I'm surprised that you were able to give a decent analysis of the line ups, I'm now so far into my own bunker on these things it just looked like a nightmare to me. Don't take that the wrong way, nothing wrong with knowing a bit more about what other people are actually interested in (even if it's not your thing) rather than just being horrified like me! Re: (313) Movement Pics
I had 'the phone conversation' with TP a few years ago: 1. They don't break. A friend of his has made him a couple, and they last for years. Contrast and compare with DJ headphones. 2. When he mixes he's listening for high frequencies -- high hats etc so the lack of low end is no problem. In fact if you listen to what he's hearing through him, it's not very musical but it cuts through the onstage sonic hash and gives you a good idea of where the beat is. 3. It's a kind of trademark now, but it grew out of practicality. 4. He has loads of stories about people thinking he's talking on the phone when he's supposed to be dj'ing. Re: (313) movement stage sound system reviews
The main stage was basically the small version of the Grateful Dead concert rig, which Meyer Sound and the Dead co-evolved through about 25 years of hard work. It is exceptionally efficient and clean and with proper EQing -- someone take a bow -- it works for electronic as well as acoustic/amplified music. The main problem was that when it was pushed too hard the bass got all mushy and drowned out the midrange in the bowl, which was a function of too much SPL and not any kind of distortion; believe me, at no time was that system really working all that hard. But at moments -- Dan Bell's live work with the crisp sound of the analog gear and the middle of Mark Farina's set are the two that come to mind -- it was really about as good as you can get with open air concert sound. They tried hard, really hard, in the Underground stage, with an unusual arrangement of stacks flanking the stage and a curved bank of stacks along the walls. There was certainly enough power to overcome the un-overcomeable deficiencies of a concrete box, but then the rest is left up to the DJ, and only Punisher, who really knows how to work that room with her sparse but potent beats, got the idea right. Although when TP dropped Plastic Dreams to good effect I knew he knew as well, but his kind of melodic house doesn't work sonically in that situation. The rest I heard in there was from forgettable to atrocious, the less said the better. The waterfront stage was a modification of last year's with the high end now floating in air and some super-modern compact bass bins that really sounded great especially with the Newcleus and BMG. Didn't spend hardly any time in the tents, but there was serious gear there too. Paxahau certainly spares no effort on staging, sound and lighting, so good on them for that. fh - what did you all think of the stages. i thought, unfortunately, the real detroit underground stage had weak sound, and the main stage had great broad range. the hawtin tent was really crisp and rich, but i actually thought the stuff coming out of the pioneer pacha stage might have been great too, though i did not venture into it to listen to performances. -- --- Michael Kuszynski [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.planerecordings.com New York, NY

To be fair, there are 'some' small local events that do better than what you see on that flyer however they are extremely few and very far between. For the most part though, Frank hit it dead on. At least here in the New England area, local events seem to have musicaly gotten stuck in 2000 and never managed to break free. Promoters tend to book the known quantities to be sure that they bring in some numbers. Most people here only know (and show up to hear) the acts that they've already been exposed to. This is one of the main reasons why I'm glad that there are a couple of us doing regular college shows in the area. Promoters generally won't bring unknown acts to this area. So, if you can't bring Mohammad to the mountain bring the mountain to Mohammad... -ant- -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Matt Kane's Brain Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2008 4:20 PM To: Guilherme Menegon Arantes Cc: Klaas-Jan Jongsma; Carlos De Brito; Frank Glazer; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Movement has competition... Re: (313) movement stage sound system reviews
Personally, I thought the Red Bull/Myspace stage (riverfront) kicked the biggest share of tail this time out. The Pioneer stage was also really, really nice - Andy Toth's set was quite memorable there for me. When there wasn't a monkey blowing out the bass signals at the Beatport tent (rarely was that the case when I walked over there), the sound was good. I avoided most of the few artists I was interested in hearing on that side of Hart Plaza simply because they couldn't be HEARD. I liked Guillaume and the Coatu Dumonts' set. Hauling up those bottoms and lining the top of the underground stage was a good idea; it opened up some of the highs and cleared out some of the 'basement mud.' Main stage was fine as long as the bass wasn't pushed too hard/signal overcompressed/ over whatever the f*^ one does to blow the entire mids and most of the highs out of range (maybe they heard them in Windsor?). I can do boom-boom as well as the next person, but way too often it was just a complete waste of what, by all appearances, was some fine technology. Mind you, nothing came close to that wonderful Funktion One setup at the riverfront last year, but everything else was definitely raised a notch. The canopies (vs. the tents) were good ideas too. Let's talk numbers. What I noticed is that there were more people EARLY on Saturday than I've ever seen...and less people mid-day and into the evening on all three nights (not that I stayed all 3). Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looked like a low turnout to me. And, to be honest, despite some nice sets, it wasn't the most memorable fest. I always go. I hope I always will (?) jeff Michael Kuszynski wrote: what did you all think of the stages. i thought, unfortunately, the real detroit underground stage had weak sound, and the main stage had great broad range. the hawtin tent was really crisp and rich, but i actually thought the stuff coming out of the pioneer pacha stage might have been great too, though i did not venture into it to listen to performances.

I'm sure the Detroit purists won't agree, but if for some reason this festival congeals as the US's (other) large electronic music festival (besides WMC), I don't think it's a bad thing at all. I'm still scarred from the late 80s/90s when there was such strong animosity toward any kind of dance music. So getting Myspace sized visibility and year after year momentum can only be seen by me as a positive, as long as it doesn't completely betray its roots. And If I were to be completely pessimistic and assume that in 5 years whatever the festival evolves into only maintains 25% detroit musical presence, that would still be so insanely out of line with the greater dance/festival culture that I'd call it a success. - Original Message From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2008 8:21:28 PM Subject: (313) Movement Update (Redbull, Myspace and Dieselboy) discuss: Detroit - May 24, 25 and 26th will bring Detroit alive with sounds from Movement 08: Detroit?s Electronic Music Festival in Hart Plaza with the Red Bull Music Academy, MySpace promotion and a higher level of production. RE: (313) Movement Update (Redbull, Myspace and Dieselboy)
Virtually any festival of any note in the last few years has grown in this manner. The first few line-ups are always amazing, and then as it grows, costs escalate and other factors concerning the future viability of the project become prominent, and as such other, more commercial aspects get involved. It's also difficult to try to downscale such a project once it gets to a certain size. I think what Gil says has some pertinence - Miami is the only American electronic music festival of any note and that's got unfortunate associations. At least having something in Detroit is a worthwhile start. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 28 March 2008 14:20 To: Gil Yaker Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Movement Update (Redbull, Myspace and Dieselboy) Five years? Well with that announcement, it shows that perhaps they haven't completely gone to the darkside. So I'll wait and see if the yet to be announced additions make up for some of the wackness presented here and on the rest of the announced line-up. Now I know there's a large contingent that see most of this discussion asmindless bickering, and sometimes it is, but the bickering more often than not has good intentions. You're not taking into account the commercial viability of this. In Europe we're lucky because a lot of festivals have considerable funding from various councils and organisations in order to get them to go ahead. The only festival I can think of that that doesn't really run according to commercial foibles is Montreux, and that's been backed from the start by rich philanthropy. Although I've not been, I don't think that is the case in Detroit. It has to be commercially viable in order to succeed in the future. Now, it may be that in say, 5 or 6 years time, the festival may be successful enough nationwide for them to realise their dreams of putting on at least in part the festival that everyone on 313 wants it to be. You may have to be patient for it to happen I'm afraid. They either put on a festival that no-one turns up to and they lose all their money on, or they pocket enough money to be able to do it next year. The fact that Paxahau are doing it I think means that those guys I'm sure will be carrying the flame for Detroit Techno all along, but it'll take time. They either put on a festival that no-one turns up to and they lose all their money on, or they pocket enough money to be able to do it next year. why be patient for something that already happened to happen again? if you think this is the future of where this festival is going, i think you are sorely mistaken. the goodness of the festival already happened, and a large part of what made it so interesting has been banished. and then suddenly in 5 or 6 years when DEMF is trying to straight up compete with WMC (which is stupid anyway, why would someone go to detroit when they could go to florida instead?) why would they switch back? it doesnt make sense. this is not the route to take in order for the festival to be what it should be and has been. The fact that Paxahau are doing it I think means that those guys I'm sure will be carrying the flame for Detroit Techno all along, but it'll take time. interesting that some of the most interesting and the absolute worst of the announced lineup will be on the RBMA stage. considering the people theyve had at their sessions, youd think that they would have better selections. myspace? deez? weakness. tmo On Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 8:21 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: discuss: Detroit - May 24, 25 and 26th will bring Detroit alive with sounds from Movement 08: Detroit?s Electronic Music Festival in Hart Plaza with the Red Bull Music Academy, MySpace promotion and a higher level of production.
