Yep, heard something about a Tresor mix compilation coming up as well. If
you are really interested in knowing this for sure, I'll check at home. I
still have an info mail of Tresor in my mailbox somewhere. DBX' Loosing

None of these items are particularly easy to find. A copy of the 2x12"
LP *with* the complimentary 7" single which was originally included,
must be all but impossible. The cd would appear to be the most likely
option so I'll look out for that, especially given my new-found penchant
for digitally dubbing things on to MD and marvelling at the clarity of
the mix-downs ...

Speaking of hard-to-find, there's a copy of Minimal Nation on ebay at
the moment I'm not even bothering to look!

the cd comes up all the time on ebay and gemm and shouldn't really set you back
more than £10 or £15, the vinyl on the other hand, as Ken said, is a bit
trickier...

there's a moral here...never lend anyone any records or CDs. Even if they
return them, their bound to be in worse nick that when you lent them, which can
only lead to resentment (if that's not too much of an insight to my anal
mindstate). Making compilations is much more fun anyway.

Happy New Year to you all btw.

there are maybe 5 people i would lend a record to, and theyre all
people i would trust with just about anything else in my life. i
lent my Halloween III soundtrack (by john carpenter) to a friend
of mine before we had a falling out. he started dating one of my
exes, i had her go through his records to pull it out and give it
back.

Ron's big on the animal references -- he told me the intro to a track

I don't know Ron except for spending an hour with him one day cutting
a record, but he sure seemed to be kind of a goofball. And I mean
that in the best possible sense of the word.

heh, I passed that demo to SSR.

Q-Moog is a mysterious character, at the time he lived in various places,
somewhere around the k'zoo area.
He did 2 ep's on Rhythm-Tech before the SSR album, #2 & #3 on Rhythm-Tech
if memory serves me right. (some of those tracks are also on the album).

Of the album, the vinyl edition was too softly pressed and considered a
missprint by SSR, limited to 500 or 1000 copies. (i forgot), which were all
gone the same day (had to pick up a vinyl copy at the store myself). The
sales were dissapointing, which is a shame, because to me it's still one of

What happened to him after the release i don't know, maybe someone else knows ?

I'll tell you about the shops since nothing much happens during the

Remix - Via del Fuime, in the piazza del popolo/via del corso area (central
rome), off Via della Lungara. A good shop with the different genres divided
in different rooms. The let you listen to all the mixes you want, just ask
them.
Disfunzioni Musicali - Via dei Rieti (i think), near the University in the

electronic.
May i suggest you take a listen to stuff on Nature recs., a good local

QH killed the Music institute party, was playing personal edits of

as you could hope for to open for dmay. but as i understand it, he
doesn't really get the chance to play like that so much, as he's

Oh yeah! I almost forgot about that record, that album was amazing.
Mirabella is so brilliant with that hypnotizing vocal in it "Cuba,
cuba, cuba energy". I wonder what happened to him as well. This album
is the only record i have of Green.

I think that sample's "human energy", off The Shamen's "Human NRG" (first
track on their "En-Tact" album). I know, I'm sad. It's my indie-kid past,
you see.

Anyways... it's weird how Green completely disappeared without trace after
only 2 12"s and then the album (which contains a fair few of the tracks from
the 12"s). It's not like the tracks were lousy. The opposite, in fact. A
lost talent.

Other "where are they now, I wish they'd not dropped off the face of the
earth":

Art Forest
Nate Krafft
Will Weber (un-subbed from 313, moved to Miami??)
Dave Peoples
Walt J
Dave Whiteside
Sole Tech (hmmm, morphed into a house producer, perhaps, if I remember the
rumour correctly???)

I could go on.

2002-07-17 Thread Brendan Nelson
Reckless is still on Upper Street (just around the corner from my house),
but Fat Cat is no more. I'm not too sure about Atlas though - the last I
heard was that it was still going, but that was quite a while ago.

As for second hand shops, there are a few around Islington - most of them
are on Essex Road (if you walk up that road you'll see around three or four
large-ish ones), and there's also one on Chapel Street (by the market)
called Disque. They're all much better for funk/soul/disco etc than for
techno, although there's the occasional surprise to be found.

2002-07-17 Thread Odeluga, Ken
There's also 'Koomba'. On Berwick Street, W1. Same side as Reckless, in fact
no more than 70 yards towards the street market from the Reckless branch
which does indie (there are two on the same street).

Seems quite newly-opened. Great selection of KDJ short-run issues plus very
very comprehensive selection of all things 313, from Delsin to
Environ/Geist/Metro Area (latter sold out at last check), Drexciya, Akufen,
Tresor, Stephen Brown, etc, etc.

No website as yet. Only a boy/girl team so you might have to wait a bit for
service when they're busy - plus I've seen them get a bit strained on
occasion ... but worth checking.

Actually there are no specific "anti-rave" laws like Chicago's, there's a
draconian police force though. Although enforcement is very inconsistent,
depending on what precinct the party is in, who happens to be patrolling
that night, and whether or not the Chief of Police has a hard on for parties
that week. He's been pretty busy fending off calls for his resignation
lately, though.

I just got booked to play a "rave" in Detroit, but I hear that there are
very tight "raving" laws there. Any input?

Also, is Richard Harvey really Ritchie Hawtin? I ask this because when I
was listening to de9 on that new Microsoft player, the whole first half was
either Ritchie, Richard or Jeff according to the track titles on the
player...

RE: (313) Q for US heads, might be OT

2004-01-21 Thread Matthew Mangold
Afaik, that is just a common myth-- similar to the myth that says that if a
police officer with a broken headlight pulls you over, you cannot get a
ticket-- or if you ask an undercover if he 'is a cop' before offering him
marijuana at a party, you cannot get busted for possession.

Breaking the law, is breaking the law-- no sticker makes you exempt.
Remember all the pirate bulletin boards back in the day that made you agree
that you were not a member of any law enforcement agency before they let you
logon and download all their 0-0-1 day old warez? They all got busted
anyhow. Same deal.

If you don't clear your samples, there *is* a risk involved. It just depends
on who you're sampling... some folks out there simply don't mind if you
sample them. I'd stay away from RIAA represented artists, though.

this might be off topic, so my apologies.

I was just wondering, say you press a record in the US and put "Promo Use
Only, Not for Resale, Radio Use Only etc" does that make you exempt from
licensing laws or something?

Or is it that if you get caught you can say "well, we weren't trying to
sell it"

The reason I ask is because you see it on most US bootlegs.
You also see it on a compilation from a well known NYC house label thats
been out recently, that I'm almost 99% sure is a bootleg.
which is extremely cheeky I reckon, considering who the artists are...

anyway, anyone know?

Ta!

well it is and it isnt. it does not exempt you from being sued for copyright
infringement, but on the other hand, it does put you a little bit below the
radar, the copyright owner has to go thru the trouble of finding out if the
"promo" is indeed actually being sold. when we're talking small pressings in
our little corner of the music industry, that little bit can help.

funny, this topic just came up on global darkness, where we were talking
about selling promos/whites...

a prime example is i-f's "mixed up in the hague" cd on panama which was
labelled as promo only. i dont think he was sued, but since then he has
sought legal copyright clearance..so no mixed up #2 cus the licensing would
be exorbitant, but we get those nice reissues like wanexa etc...

you mean that ibadan joint? i think ALL their records that sample
stuff or whatever say that. im not sure if that means its a
bootleg or what. people in the UK do that as well though, i can
remember some 97 era congo natty releases that had a non white
label and said "promo use only" on them. i think that means that
you can have the promos out before actually clearing the samples
or whatever.

2004-01-21 Thread jonathan morse
when I was a kid I used to see that all the time on records and thought that
when someone from a radio station went to a second hand shop to sell them
and pocket a few bucks that the clerk was supposed to be not only an
upstanding citizen, but a champion for artists rights and refuse to buy them
because they were promos but then I became older and jaded and realized
that it probably had something to do with tax deductions for promotional
expenses.

life just isnt the same once the magic and innocence are gone...
