Sure, there's no denying that Derrick is a brilliant DJ and his place in
the evolution of the music that we regard highly will never be disputed.

However, let's remember why the word 'techno' was chosen when it comes to
these sounds. What's Derrick released recently? And how about Marcel and a
whole swag of artists who are ripping it up right now... don't they deserve
the air time? If they're producing excellent music, then yes.

What is Detroit techno anyway these days? Is it a sound or an ethos? Or
both? Or something else all together. That's not a dig, but a serious
question being asked when borders are transcended and sounds cross over and
meld; largely due to two things - the Internet and the reduced cost of air
travel. And what does it mean? Well, yes, there's a lot of crap music to
wade through, but there's the ability for people to access music far more
readily, and this can drive the influence of artists, and beyond that,
these new artists have a playing field to that is far more even than any
other than before. And before I ramble off on another tangent whilst I
should be finishing paperwork so I can enjoy my weekend, I'm just happy to
see a thread with 20+ posts on the list for a change!

2011-11-25 Thread David Powers
I disagree, if you make Detroit inspired music and consider yourself
part of the Detroit techno continuum, then you your music is relevant,
period. Especially if you are from the Midwest. Times change, people
move, and ideas spread across the globe. And "Detroit techno" now
refers to an idea, and to styles of music based on that approach, not

We can continue to talk about the work of Detroit artists, as well,
but the list has little traffic as it is. There's no reason to adopt a
narrow minded definition of "Detroit techno", nothing is gained
through that.

While I think Derrick's a great DJ, he hasn't made music in years, why
shouldn't we talk about stuff that people are making now? I say we
should definitely congratulate fellow list members for their work
getting some real exposure and recognition!!!

It used to be musicians supported one another, what happened?

This is the whole problem with this list, nobody cares about new music
it's like a bunch of grandpas sitting on their porch talking about the
good ole days... Which is ridiculous because there has NEVER been a
better time for new music, despite the fact that it's terribly hard to
make any kind of money at it anymore.

Re: (313) Derrick May - Heartbeat Presents Mixed By Derrick May Ã- Air Vol.2 (CD) at Discogs

2011-11-25 Thread Kevin Kennedy
You know...we're talking about Derrick May, mix CDs...and all that:

FBK and Reel By Real were just featured on a mix by Marcel Dettman
called CONDUCTED.

as memory serves me correctly, FBK IS a member of this list. From
what I know, Derrick May isn't...and based on pushing things
forward...I would probably rather buy this. I don't buy CDs...I make
thembut I just thought since NOBODY BOTHERED TO say anything about
this disc...I guessed I would. Sorry to hijack your thread.

FBK

Do people buy mix cds anymore? Shoot, I don't know...but the liner
notes for this disc are quite interesting...

http://www.electronicbeats.net/music/reviews/marcel-dettman-conducted

cheers...

2011-11-25 Thread David Powers
I guess I personally don't know anyone who really buys mix CD's.

But you're right, SOMEONE must buy them. I suppose if you're name is
big enough, you can sell a lot of anything, and Fabric has a
reasonably big name. But with the number of free mixsets available
from sites like Resident Advisor, there's already more mixes out there
than one can keep up with.

I feel like scarcity made mix CD's a big deal in the past. That
scarcity is long gone, as anyone who knows how to use google can find
mixsets of their favorite DJ's online. And a mix CD does not have the
interest for collectors that vinyl has.

On the other hand, mix CD's are great for impulse buys, certainly I
could see people buying them at a show, though I don't recall anyone
other than m-nus doing much in the way of merchandising at their
events.

Derrick May still slays most dancefloors without having to try too hard. I
wonder if this mix contains any of the ace tracks he's dropped when he played
here (SF) recently.

There's a 4+ hour long mix floating around Soundcloud that proves the man still
has few equals behind decks.

Not sure it had a name as such, more of a dj tool. The track is actually
just those words, no beats or melody, an acapella in fact.

Hello

Nice to have the mp3 but worth mentioning that the BBC is more likely to cover
artists like Derrick again if we all go and click on the 'listen again' link on
the 1Xtra website:

http://www.bb.co.uk/1xtra/allstar/

You don't actually have to listen to it if you're not a fan of Realplayer (who
is?) but it's worth doing for tactical reasons. The show's only available until
early Sunday morning (only just got this message for some reason).

Indeed. Not heard any Derrick mixes for a while so this makes a

System 7 maybe?

There's a rare remix on an Ame mix CD. The Jaguar remix is always cool.

You could play some stuff Derrick digs: Eno, Bjork, Beck a couple of
albums ago, the one with the graphic sleeve.

I had an idea that Tekkon (the film) was up for an Oscar, maybe I am
dreaming. I don't know if that will help the soundtrack any!

Yeah that's a great soundtrack! What I find interesting is that the
Joey beltram track completety owns derrick's on that side. I recall
having to check the tracklisting to make sure it wasn't mislabled.
This was one of the last few shining moments in Mr. Beltram's

apparently, there is another version of the Ghost in the Shell soundtrack
(bootleg?) with a completely different (at least titled) track from May
than the official release
http://www.discogs.com/release/112729

is the Wiggin track on True People the same that's on Innovator? I haven't

I know most (myself included) are not to keen on the various

RE: (313) Derrick May

2006-02-23 Thread Robert Taylor
I have another May story - he played at The Orbit in 92/93. But only for
20 minutes. He was late cos he was supposedly confused about Leeds'
proximity to London. Underworld were on before him and ended up playing
a second set which was even more crazy and wigged out than the first.
May shows up at 1.40am and plays about 40 records in 20 minutes,
starting with Irresistable Force's Flying High played as fast as he
could manually spin it on the deck, whilst cutting in some other record
with beats, before slaying us for the next twenty minutes, grinning
maniacally all the time. The place went mental and Leeds fell in love
with Derrick May

i havent seen him in years, but honestly, he was probably one of the 5
best deejays ive ever seen in my life. he would mix flawlessly between
records to the tune of about one a minute. it was as intense as you
could imagine. im not a big fan of that kind of mixing usually, but man
it sounded like each track was meant to be played just like he did. that
night in the summer of 98 was the night my obsession with detroit techno
really began..

I think he's still brilliant. He played here last time and killed it. I
suppose it has more to do with people's expectations than Derrick's
ability. I know a few kids here thought what he played wasn't techno
because it wasn't "banging" or because they mistook a track he played as
being a trance tune. It was a tune with Ann Saunderson singing on it. I
think it was one of her newer tracks. All the younger techno fans thought
it was "progressive house" or some such sh: so they decided that D. May
sucked.
I know at the Movement afterparty with F. Kevorkian he was fantastic as
well. A welcome relief after Kevorkian's utterly dull bashing loop fest,
May brought back some personality to the music - what could beat
"Everything's Gone Pear-shaped" at 5am with the early morning light
starting to filter through the warehouse skylights?

Also, if you've seen him once and he's blown you away, which he's bound to
do the first time, you'll always compare each subsequent show. Which is
unfair I think - natural but unfair because each event will have different
circumstances surrounding it.

Yeah I'm with you there. It was a real eye opener for me. I'd never
really seen someone mix it up so quickly at times, but still make a
whole that was more than the individual parts. And boy was the mixing
tight. It's hard to describe really but it was just class I guess. I've
seen plenty of good DJs over the years. Some very good. But I guess some
are just gifted and can get those faders up to 11. Its an all time
favourite night of mine. It ranks along side another where DJ Sneak
warped the minds of the crowd at a house night by going techno on them
with some crazy mixing with "Horny Ass Fred". Now that was a track that
could rock a floor.

Anyway that's another story. It's time to take off the rose tinted specs
and crawl back under my stone.

Mark

Everyone seems to have a DM being brilliant story, so what happen

He was brilliant in December !!

It's all a matter of opinion of course, but he mixing was superb, he
started off with some old Chicago & worked into some more modern techno /
house.

The fact that it was *meant* to be a disco / classics set wasn't a problem
for me (or the friends I was with.) It was a pleasant surprise !
