Just sounds like a load of other average latin dance records to me.
I'll go listen to the 12 instead of the clips to see if that
changes my mind.

It's a little like a Los Hermanos record but not quite. It's rougher
than the usual LH offerings to my ears. I guess if you dig LH then
you'll like this.

Usually I don't really like the LH stuff, a little too smooth.

jeez, and i thought i was the only one who thought that way about his
productions, although 'mystical rhythm' is a classic. and his track on
planet delsin.

I'm surprised how divisive his stuff seems to be. It's weird.

speaking of planet e, can anyone tell me if the clark track 'jak to
basics' that features on craig's dj-kicks is altered greatly from the
original track on the lofthouse ep?

It's on the Claude Young DJ Kicks as well for comparison. If you're trying
to figure out if you need the album, you do, and in my mind 'Jak to Basics'
and 'Lofthouse' aren't even close to the best tracks on there.

I definitely agree with this, I love melodic techno but feel that the vast
majority of stuff over the past few years has become way too smooth and
polished - just because it's melodic doesn't mean it can't be raw and gritty
as well. I much prefer music to be a bit rougher and with a good bite that
all ultra-perfectly produced and squeaky clean.

Yeah I completely agree. I think as time has gone on it's got easier and
easier to get that polished sound (cheaper equipment and better
software). Which is not necessarily a good thing in my book.

from Vince rocks, it should have come out on Transmat I believe...

it all sounds a bit too smooth, conservative, and generic to
me, honestly. it is nicely produced and nice deep sounds and
all that -- just lacking personality and unique feeling to
really get to me. or something. i could imagine liking some
of it over time, and that the planet e stuff could be exceptional.

I'm generally not that persuaded by his stuff (a lot of it is
almost-but-not-quite for me), although the Headspace 12 is wicked I think.
It's very smooth but it's got more charater to it than a lot of the other
stuff. I love two of the tracks on that one.

about alot of melodic techno, not enough of it has teeth. of course
there's also the melodic techno thats too dancefloor. its a hard combo

Still no re-release of 'Six Nine' by 69? :-(

It's still my favourite 69 track

Or how about being even bolder (= not very bold at all since all these
things sell, even at the premium charged for 4 Jazz Funk Classics) and
pressing previously unreleased stuff like Puntang (my favourite 69 track).
Surely it would be good to have stuff on vinyl which hasn't been pressed
before while repressing previously released stuff?

Alex

It isn't available alas - my point really. I can't really tell you a lot
about this, maybe somebody else on the list knows the facts and will correct
my ill informed and badly remembered (= I may be making it up) version of
things which is: it looked like it was going to come out on RS about 10
years ago, it was on a demo cassette of tracks from forthcoming RS albums,
also on there were Juan's I Wanna Be There from Deepspace which hadn't
come out then and similar tasters for albums by Tournesol, Jacobs Optical
Stairway, Ken Ishii, all of which dropped and some RS classics. I think at
the time there was something about a 69 album coming but whether that was
the Sound Of Music CD compilation of Planet E stuff on RS which people
have mentioned in some recent posts or a whole lost 69 album (unlikely but
an anxiety inducing thought) I don't know. Anyway it's a brilliant track,
I've heard 2 versions the one on the cassette above and one C2 played when
he did Radio 1's Essential Mix of that time. OH MY GOD, after an hour and
a half, as he's building up to the end, he drops this long drawn out (20
minute? seemed like it) version, starting with background noises from the
other version just building for ages before it finally kicked. Definite
goosebump moment.

I don't know but maybe it's a misunderstanding with
the remix (10'') of François de Roubaix who is an old composer of movie
soundtracks (like the samourai with alain delon) from the 60-70's.

i heard through the grape vine that the vocals on Demented were sampled from

IMO it's a good record, but as it has been said there's nothing new.
It's like the new alaska by L.Garnier (back in the old days).

Innerzone orchestra, a great thing done but
I wish carl had find another way to create than mixing jazz with techno.,

It's Carl Craig, Luke Vibert and a coupla other folks I'm not
recalling at
the moment, remixing a French composer, Francois de Roubaix, who
wrote stuff
for film in the '60s and the '70s. He did the score to a film called
Le
Samourai, which is a great film noir, and many others. You can check
all of

that here: http://us.imdb.com/Title?0062229

Carl Craig's mix is almost anthemic, with big trumpets, and a great
Carl
Craig Paperclip People style beat. Only problem is that it's nothing
really
new for him (now that I think about it, it sort of reminds me of
'Steam' off

of 'The Floor', in terms of tempo and beat anyway).

It's a hot record, but really pricy for a 10. The label is called
Cinemix.

Innerzone Orchestra was totally different thing and I think there is an obvious
reason why Carl uses so many different monikers for his records. Nobody can
really expect Carl to do only bedroom listening stuff because he did some
absolute classic soulful deep listening music. Nobody can expect that Carl only
does his future jazz records liek Innerzone or Detroit Experiment. And nobody
can expect from Carl that he only does dancefloor stuff like Paerclip People or
Tres demented.
What I want to say is that he has very different facettes and we should be glad
that he releases those different styles. And Carl Craig is not a musical
machine, so he can make tracks that might seem not to be genious as usual
Music is a question of taste.

PG Cool, some of my faith in this list has restored! I thought all of
 your
were just gaga over anything that carl puts out.

Alex Bond well I guess I'm guilty a little of that. I have to say
though I

 think out
of all the detroit 'heads' I feel he has the most consistency, and to
this day is still making very good records.

I just bought it too! Can't say I like everything Craig does but heard
abt
this and then actually heard it, and to me, it's the bees! Maybe I'm
getting
more, errr, demented(?) in my old age but whilst I've really been very
happy
to avoid 'looped bangers by numbers,' what I think of as the essence of
a
tough techno track - which is really quite an old tradition in techno -
was
never problem with that sub-genre in the first place. The problem was
too

many lazy or just plain talentless producers. But I will always give a
Surgeon record or anything Downwards a listen, ditto, Rob Hood, Mills,
Sativae, Jamie Liddell (sp?) Landstrumm (proly others who/which I can't
think of right now) ... get the picture? So when I heard CC had done
this,
well, we know his rep, his mind (to a v small extent), I expected
something
at least half-good, and it is indeed impressive (to me). It's true that
it
isn't really bedtime listening/for home use, but that's never been the
sole

criteria for a record to be 'good' imho.

 Peace

 k

(but not whilst it's playing tho' ;-)

 I heard tres demented @
dancetracks last night .. It's a damn drum track, and a boring one at
 that.

I think it's real rough s**t. I like it. I'm not too keen on the last
3rd when it dives into that mad rave bit. It's crying out for a
 re-edit...

I also think it reminds me big time of Sleezy D I've lost control -
like a 2003 version... I guess it's the voices, but it's just the
roughness of the whole thing. as someone said yesterday, I reckon it
will sound good on a big rig.

Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Yeah, it's imminent, next week apparently.

The wonderful life track is a remix of the one on Landcruising.

The B side is 'sitting under a tree' w/ Sarah Gregory.
