[amsat-bb] Re: Funcube dongle software
Hi Robert, (assuming you mean the SDR software, not the Funcube telemetry decoding SW) I have played around a few years with HD-SDR, sdr-radio.com, etc. running on a Win XP machine with 2.5GB memory. Not too long ago I was fed up with their relative large CPU load so I tried SDRSharp. Light-weight CPU load wise, but has all I need. Plug play for the FCD. And I purchased SatPC32, which plugs into SDRSharp, also no large CPU load. That's my SDR set-up these days. Next step to take is to connect SatPC32 to my TS2000 as well, I didn't have time to figure that out yet. For the TS2000 I still use HRD, but it takes minutes for the PC to start up the Satellite tracker of HRD. Once it runs, it's all fine, although I always feight with keppler sets in HRD. Same btw with SatPC32, also there I still struggle how to create a single set of satellites that are spread over multiple URL's (eg MCubed-2 is not in the standard kepler overviews but at a different location). ps: I am (still) about to purchase a new PC, and still doubting which O/S to go for (taking all the various programs discussed above into account on one hand and the upcoming end of selling of Windows 7 on the other hand). Henk, PA3GUO Can anyone recommend suitable software for the Funcube dongle please? Regards Robert G8ATE ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] SATPC32 and SDR Sharp connect?
When I use the DDE tracker plug-in from Ian Gilmour (MM6DOS) as described also here: http://www.pe0sat.vgnet.nl/tag/sdrsharp/ I do indeed see in SDR Sharp the DDE Client. I also can see when I connect it the realtime output of SATPC32 correctly displayed (sat name, freq, ..). However, when I hit PLAY to start the FCD to become active, the DDE information freezes (no updates anymore) and the FCD also does not go to the freq from the DDE. Who can tell me what I do wrong ? Problem fixed after talking with Jan PE0SAT (thanks Jan!) [amsat-bb] Re: Operating linear transponders - Newbie
Peter, When you made 2 contact already you did Perfect. With a capital P. People will respond with how to handle doppler, but reality is that it can be difficult, even when you have an automated setup. Keep going, you're doing just fine! Henk, PA3GUO - Hi all, I have just tried working through AO73, with limited success. I need some very basic help with satellite operation. I have an IC-9100, I set the uplink and downlink to mid-range (435.140Mhz and 145.960Mhz), then call CQ until I hear my own signal which has worked every time, then I get problems. When someone calls me back I panic, what do I do when the doppler kicks in, do I move both TX and Rx, or do I just move my Rx to follow the other guy. I haven't managed to get SatPC32 controlling my rig yet, also, I want to learn the hard way - manually. Can someone point me to an article that explains in detail how to operate. I know this is a very basic question, but we all have to start somewhere. I have managed tow contacts so far. First was AO73 and tonight with FO29. Not sure how I did it, but thanks to ON5NY and EM5SR. Happy New Year Peter G8KEK ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] MCube-2
For those trying to capture the Mcube-2 telemetry, it surely is a lot of fun downloading the 9k6 data at 70cm! The SW that the project team provides is really easy to use and looks nice. Cool demo for your friends when you want to show-case your involvement in Cubesats. With my modest set/up I can decode when the satellite is 20 degrees elevation. A note on the downlink frequency: the published frequency is 437.485MHz, but I have better results a few kHz lower: 437.480MHz. Success! Henk, PA3GUO ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Thanks for the explaination Wouter. It sure is a fantastic transponder! Henk, PA3GUO ps: indeed as stated everywhere: 5W uplink is more than enough for a strong downlink. Hi Henk, What you are seeing is the combined effect of various oscillators drifting over temperature and some static offsets present. It is not so easy to have these offsets quantified as static numbers. The oscillators were designed to be extremely low power, and temperature compensation is therefore limited. we do not have the power on board for PLL based frequency generation. With the current state of the art, this is possible, but not when the circuit was designed. The power budget of a one Unit CubeSat is challenging, and FUNcube is the first 1U CubeSat to include a linear transponder. At the moment we are nice and power positive, but the system was designed with the degradation of the battery and solar arrays in mind. So in the end, I am afraid you will have to guesstimate based on temperature. Interesting; This morning (10:55utc) during an almost perfect North -- South pass, 70 degrees max elevation, (using exactly the same station configuration as yesterday) Funcube-1: - did not show any variations wrt polarization (was a lot yesterday), only slow fading in overall strenth - had weak downlink (SNR much lower as yesterday, could see it even on the SDR display only as of 16 degrees ele.) Henk, PA3GUO -Oorspronkelijk bericht- Van: PA3GUO Using a 2x6 elements beam + pre-amp + an FCD, it is possible to decode packets down to just 0.7 degrees elevation. Rather impressive. Also I noticed that if I have other CPU intensive SW running (HRD) at the same time, nothing is decoded. Visually it all looks the same on the FUNcube-1 Dashboard, signal strenghts etc., but somehow it needs maybe more PC resources (memory?) for the actual decoding, because as soon as I closed HRD incoming packets got decoded, while before none of them was. [amsat-bb] Delfi n3xt decoding
Delfi-n3xt decoded fine down to 5 degrees elevation using a 2x6 elements beam + pre-amp + FCD + SDR#. I like the Delfi-nx3xt decoding software (DUDe) a lot. Together with the RAX/Mcubed decoding SW (from James Cutler) this is the best out there for us (IMHO). Compliments to those teams! (due to the format Delfi-n3xt is easer to set up, as you don't need to have the TNC switch to KISS mode) Less tumbling as Funcube-1, I for Funcube-1 I need to switch polarity regular for strongest SNR, Delfi-n3xt is more stable (can leave it in the same polarization all the time). [amsat-bb] Are you ready for the new satellites?
With a lot of upcoming launches: Are you ready ? Myself, I just installed SDR-Radio.com, from http://www.sdr-radio.com/ Works excellent (so far) with my 'old' FunCube Dongle. SDR-radio.com is free for the FCD. This SDR SW is running here on a 10 year old Windows XP PC (cool: this SDR SW does not hog down the PC!). For simplicity reasons I always use the HO-68 CW beacon (435.790MHz) for validation of my system: antenna tracking, SNR of the downlink signal, doppler correction etc. When either the antenna/pre-amp/receiver/kepler set/computer time/.. is not correct you immediately notice this test to fail. SDR-radio.com provides perfect dopler compensation: the entire pass of HO-68 I did not hear a single shift in frequency (with an extremely narrow software CW filter). The set-up: 435MHz antenna = 16 element DK7ZB, horizontal polarization (only). Plus an SSB pre-amp. For 144MHz I will use a 2x6 element DK7ZB (also with an SSB pre-amp). Antenna tracking is my 18 year old home-build microprocessor system that controls the Kenpro rotators: the KR400 and KR500. Not sure if I will use the SDR set-up (wider rx spectrum, can record and analyze later) or the ('good old trusted') Kenwood TS2000. Trusted as in: less configuration options (compared to SDR), so less errors I can make (read: the trust statement reflects on the operator (me), not the equipment of choice). Anyway: I am very interested to learn about your plans, are you ready for the new sat's: - receiver (hardware of software) ? - antenna (directional or not during the first passes)? - good/bad/funny experiences you want to share? - .. [amsat-bb] Dutch Amateur Radio Satellite User Day - September 28th 2013
Dutch Amateur Radio Satellite User Day September 28th 2013 On Saturday September 28th, the very first Amateur Radio Satellite User Day will be organized. Location The event will take place at restaurant Binnenhof, in the small town of Paasloo, in the North of the Netherlands, a 90 minute drive by car from Amsterdam. Join us! We invite everyone to come over and join us! For both newbies as well as experienced satellite operators it will be an exciting day with interesting presentations as well as exciting activities! Two Dutch satellite builders will talk about their latest satellites, that both will be launched in November: FUNCube-1 (Wouter Weggelaar PA3WEG) and Delfi-n3Xt (Jasper Bouwmeester). Both projects will take along with them engineering models: a great opportunity to see yourself how small and advanced Cubesats look like! Furthermore we have many hands-on sessions planned: take your own radio and antenna to Paasloo, we can help you get started or you can compare yours to that of the others! Of course this is a fantastic opportunity to meet and great each other in person. The OSCAR lunch has a lot of time reserved for that as well. The entire day is free of charge, including coffee and lunch. From those that want to stay for the Barbecue at the end of the day we ask a contribution of 17,50 euro. For those that cannot come over to the Netherlands: meet us during one of the hands-on sessions (see the program details below). Program 10:00 Arrival Coffee and tea, registration 10:30 - 10:45 Hands-on session VO-52 Listen to, and maybe even make a QSO via, the strongest linear transponder currently in space. We do have a low elevation pass, need to check line-of-sight. 2m/70cm SSB transponder, maximum elevation 11 degrees 10:45 - 11:00 Welcome Opening of both the VHF-day and the Amateur Radio Satellite User Day 10:43 11:02 Hands-on session HO-68 Listening to the CW downlink signals of this Chinese satellite. Its linear transponder is no longer functional, but its beacon is great fun to experiment with for reception of amateur radio satellites. Examples include testing and comparing different types of antennas. 70 cm CW beacon. Maximum elevation: 49 degrees 11:04 11:24 Hands-on session FO-29 Listening to, and maybe make a QSO via, the linear transponder of this satellite. A very distant satellite for portable equipment, but with a little bit of effort and luck we should be able to hear our own signals back on downlink. 2m/70cm SSB transponder. Maximum elevation: 73 degrees. 11:30 - 11:35 Welcome Amateur Radio Satellite User Day Opening of the very first Amateur Radio Satellite User Day in The Netherlands. 11:35 - 12:15 FUNcube-1 A new satellite revealed (Wouter Weggelaar PA3WEG) A presentation by one of the builders, about the technology used in FUNcube-1, a project of a series of organizations, including AMSAT-UK. Due to the delayed launch (now planned for November) FUNcube-1 is not yet in space during the event, but very likely Wouter will bring along the functional engineering-model of FUNCube-1. A presentation you dont want to miss! 12:15 - 13:00 Amateur Radio Satellites step-by-step, for newbies and experienced operators! (Ivo Klinkert - PA1IVO and Henk Hamoen - PA3GUO) An introduction into orbits of LEO/HEO-satellites and how to predict their passes. We will also talk about which kind of equipment is needed to transmit via amateur radio satellites. So, a talk on TLE, AOS, LOS, TCA, Kepler and Doppler, RHCP, LHCP, PCs, Antennes, TRX, SDR and Cubesat CW beacons. While this session addresses the basics of satellite communications, we invite the more experienced operators to share their experiences during the presentation as well. For example which software they use, which satellites are favorite, which antennas and rotators are being used and: which transceivers are most popular. 13:00 13:45 Hands-on session FUNCube-1 Engineering model Most likely it will be possible to make in Paasloo QSOs via the transponder of the engineering-model of FUNCube-1. A fun exercise or simply a lot of fun with a satellite of which we really control when it is within reach! 2m/70cm SSB transponder. 13:00 14:00 OSCAR-lunch Extended buffet lunch buffet, where the objective is to meet and great your fellow radio amateurs that share the same interest amateur radio satellites. At the same time a demonstration of the famous FUNcube Dongle and equipment like Arrow antennas, LVB-tracker, etc. 13:45 14:15 Hands-on session LO-19 Receiving the downlink signals of the satellite. Even though this satellite has gone through some rough situations up there in space, we can still hear a very strong (continues) carrier in the 70cm band. A great opportunity to observe the Doppler-effect and to experience how large this effect is at different stages of a pass. Or: compare again the performance of the different antennas that will be brought by visitors. 70 cm

We do have the APRS system up-and-running, and NO-44 (PCSAT-1) and ISS-APRS data packets for example are monitored and automatically forwarded to the internet already. On messaging to twitter email: In case of a malfunction or wrong software setting the satellite may not be able to change its transmission pattern, when it is in space and cannot be reached anymore (e.g. up-link broken). Alternative would be to break it up in two steps: Step 1 Transmit a status in APRS format, and have that captured/received as regular packets. Here is for example how all the ISS data (real-time) looks like: http://www.ariss.net, and here is how NO-44 looks like: http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/pcsat.cgi Step 2 Have a software program running that looks at the the received APRS telemetry, and derive from that a Twitter tweet (every hour, every day, ...). For example if the telemetry says: CAPE 012000105 this could mean I am alive and battery voltage is 10.5 volt and temperature is 12 degrees Celsius. The tweet could be: Hi this is CAPE-2 in space, I feel cold (12C) and my battery is good (10.5V). Just a thought. [amsat-bb] How to measure the performance of my satellite station ?
Since I had been in-active for quite a number of weeks, of course I first wanted to check if my (70cm) satellite station was still functional. The first step I always take is listening to the stable beacon of HO-68, CW @435.790MHz. My goal is to have the antenna tracked automatically, and frequency PC controlled by HRD. When the result is that I hear the beacon, no doppler shift, I know this first step is taken (means hardware and software incl kepler sets seem to work). Now what next ? Signal strength of that CW beacon is one way to measure my station, another way is looking at RAX-2, which transmits at 437.345 MHz (9k6 FM packets, KISS mode). RAX sends these days each 10 seconds a short burst of data. Using the free decoding SW from the RAX team you can: a) analyze the satellite data yourself b) help the scientific experiments of the university by forwarding the telemetry c) test your own station ! http://rax.engin.umich.edu/?page_id=301 An example is this mornings pass, which had a max elevation of 46 degrees. With my 16 elements DK7ZB (http://pa3guo.com/ant_jun_2011.jpg) my station could hear the satellite starting at 2 degrees elevation, and decode at around 8 degrees. See the table below (decode timestamps from the decoding software) 4 May 2012 07:51:38 GMT (6.2 degrees elevation) 4 May 2012 07:51:49 GMT 4 May 2012 07:52:01 GMT 4 May 2012 07:52:09 GMT 4 May 2012 07:52:19 GMT 4 May 2012 07:52:29 GMT 4 May 2012 07:52:39 GMT 4 May 2012 07:52:50 GMT 4 May 2012 07:53:02 GMT 4 May 2012 07:53:10 GMT 4 May 2012 07:53:20 GMT 4 May 2012 07:53:30 GMT 4 May 2012 07:53:41 GMT 4 May 2012 07:53:51 GMT 4 May 2012 07:54:01 GMT 4 May 2012 07:54:11 GMT 4 May 2012 07:54:21 GMT 4 May 2012 07:54:32 GMT 4 May 2012 07:54:42 GMT 4 May 2012 07:54:52 GMT 4 May 2012 07:55:02 GMT 4 May 2012 07:55:12 GMT 4 May 2012 07:55:22 GMT 4 May 2012 07:55:33 GMT 4 May 2012 07:55:43 GMT 4 May 2012 07:55:53 GMT 4 May 2012 07:56:03 GMT 4 May 2012 07:56:13 GMT 4 May 2012 07:56:24 GMT 4 May 2012 07:56:34 GMT 4 May 2012 07:56:44 GMT 4 May 2012 07:56:54 GMT 4 May 2012 07:57:05 GMT 4 May 2012 07:57:15 GMT 4 May 2012 07:57:25 GMT 4 May 2012 07:57:35 GMT 4 May 2012 07:57:45 GMT 4 May 2012 07:57:55 GMT 4 May 2012 07:58:06 GMT 4 May 2012 07:58:16 GMT 4 May 2012 07:58:26 GMT 4 May 2012 07:58:36 GMT 4 May 2012 07:58:46 GMT (11 degrees) ... 4 May 2012 07:59:48 GMT (5 degrees) So at the end my station stopped decoding at 11 degrees elevation, it picked up a final beacon at 5 degrees. We could define a kind of 'Ground Station Effectiveness' as number of packets decoded (not heared!) between a certain elevation threshold (eg 10 degrees). When no packet would be missed my station would rate now for 100% (at 10 degrees). Or more scientifically: the GS effectiveness of PA3GUO's station is 100% (@10 degrees elevation) All kinds of items can bring this number down from 100% to lets say 80%: - hard mechanical stop of the rotor, forcing a full 360 degrees turn during a pass - interference of other signals/satellite during a pass (at the same frequency) - tumbling of the satellite (antenne pointing to wrong direction) - polarization changes (rotation of the satellite) Well, the above shows that my 1x16 elements (horizontal pol) antenna works fine to support missions like RAX. No need for circular antenna (admitted: other satellite give different results for circular (both better and worse) Just sharing some thoughts, looking forward to your feedback / reflections ! [amsat-bb] Re: M-Cubed telemetry decoded
Hi Carl ! MCubed RAX use 9k6, you see that in an SDR, but don't really hear it. Aubiesat is CW, but relative weak. I would start with Explorer 1. Explorer-1 uses 1k2 and you can clearly hear that in USB or LSB. Also its signal is relative strong compared to the other sats. Finally, you can decode it by just playback audio (eg mp3) via MixWin. It transmits every 15 seconds a burst. Downlink frequency is 437.505 MHz. Step 1: see if you hear it (and let us know - I am interested) Step 2: decode it Henk, PA3GUO (antenna: 16 element, horiontal beam, pre-amp: SSB mast-mounted, RX: FCD SDR) FB Mike. [amsat-bb] Re: ARISSat-1 battery eclipse voltage decreasing
Dear Gould / ARISSat-1 team, Thanks for sharing this ! When the battery would go dead (or has very long charge times), to what extend would that also impact the low power mode ? Better phrazed: what are the requirements to go/stay in low power mode ? Is there a (no power) mode, where there is not enough power to go even into low power mode ? A kind of test/emergency mode, where the uplink/xponder and even FM is off but only the CW beacon is still on ? ... another question: Which type of command capabilities are available to the team, only a bare minimum (satellite TX on/off) or more ? Best regards, Henk, PA3GUO The ARISSat-1 Battery voltage is decreasing each eclipse period. It therefore is taking longer for the Battery to charge up to 32.5V to allow the switch from Low Power to High Power when the satellite enters an illumination period. ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Any ARISSat-1 news/updates from the project team ?
Just a kind request to the ARISSat-1 team, Via this amsat-bb a lot of early feedback is provided on the satellite. Often new satellites fail shortly after launch, so it is key to collect as much a possible data in these early days. Many people do this already. However, we also have many questions and report observations, (as an example the high/low power mode switching over VK) without any reply from the project team directly. Btw I have to say that on BPSK topics Phil Karn Douglas Quagliana are really doing a great job in discussing the results and giving feedback (thanks guys - very learnful !). IMHO way to much information is still not made available, or scattered around on various websites, sometimes even in articles of magazines ... Last Twitter post (tweet) was on Aug 3. Last News post to www.arissat1.org was on Aug 5. As an example: I still have no clue on the operational mode switching sequences, like voice... sstv, but also: when will which type of BPSK be transmitted, how long are the transmission sequences, what is the TX off-period. Please don't take this as an offend, I know we are all very busy. But really, if we want to interest new people - we have to step up and provide more and better information about the mission which was announced so widely. From a technical point of view the project seems like a big success; the SDX is working just fine, and we have with a broken (?) antenna still a great uplink capability. Let's celebrate this success and further exploit the momentum that we have now. Would be a nice start to have a daily summary of which parts of the system have been tested, are working, etc. etc. Of course, let me know if I can be of any help ! I've had some issues with decoding BPSK too. Worked fine on the first day, then unable to decode anything. Eventually I reloaded the software and played a wav file through the system. Finally it began decoding again. I don't really know what the problem was. It still will not send tlm via the internet and I can't get sound out...Hence the wav files. Problem is the wav file I have is large so I cant send it to you to try. Perhaps some one has 30 seconds worth that does decode, then we can use that as a standard to check our systems. I've been tracking doppler by hand. Seems to work OK but it's very important to keep the CW in the 'blue' window. I would think jumps would not be good. Perhaps frequent doppler updates. - So very small jumps. I also heard HB9 last night on the transponder, but in low power mode (45 sec)that is difficult. - I'll wait for some daylight passes. Can someone point me to the ARISSat-1 mode schedules ? During the recent pass, ARISSat was the first pass in low pwr mode. During the (short) active periods I could relay short CW beeps over the transponder @5W. Midway the pass the satellite came in the sun and switched on and stayed on. But now the transponder was off. Is there an overview of sequence of modes, eg when SSTV is on Xponder off, etc. ? Henk, PA3GUO, ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] First SSTV transmission via the ARISSat-1 transponder !
Today morning at 02:58utc I succesfully did a short SSTV test using the linear transponder of ARISSat-1: http://www.pa3guo.com/pa3guo_arissat1_sstv_9aug2011_0258utc.jpg Prior to this I did some experiments with CW, starting at 50W, going down to 5W. My TS2000 does not go lower as 5W, but I believe even 1W or lower will be audible. In my opinion the transponder uplink is VERY sensitive. Using the FunCubeController SDR is it nice to see the full downlink spectrum, on the left the CW+BPSK signals, the transponder downlink in the middle, and the FM downlink on the right. Equipment: Uplink HW: TS2000X, 435MHz, 5W RF power + 12 elements beam Uplink SW: MMSSTV + HRD (doppler control) Downlink HW: FunCubeDongle (SDR) + SP-2000 preamp + 2x6 elements beam Downlink SW: MMSSTV + DK3WN Satcontrol (doppler/freq control) + HDSDR (SDR) -- Henk, PA3GUO, The Netherlands ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Re: ARISSat TLM soundcard selection (and submission listings)
Hi Sion, Great suggestion. Another suggestion: Not for us experimenters, but for schools / teachers / others / .. : ARISSatTLM setup under Win7 worked fine, the assumed directory for the TLM storage was indeed used. For Win XP this did not work: I got an error message when starting ARISSatTLM, it looked for the directory on the wrong place (it was created somewhere else). So I moved that directory to the place it was looking for it, and it works. I know there is a heads up on this issue during the install process, but still. For those many new people we try to interest (those 1+ million AMSAT reached with the press release), it would be good to fix this. Just my 2 cents. Henk (btw: the SW overall looks good quite appealing (also important in this case), it seems to incorporate the best ideas of recent other space programs, including Delfi-C3, RAX, ..) Another idea (maybe this is already in place and I missed it) It would be nice to have on the ARISSat telemtry website (latest values) an overview of which stations submitted the data (they entered their callsign under 'tools'). That would highly motivate new people to contribute. Imagine you are a student, and build a receive set-up, and can show your teacher your name/call is listed on the official ARISSat website ! [amsat-bb] WORK-AROUND FOUND! RE: ARISSat TLM soundcard selection
OK ! So there is no way to select between either the soundcard (read output from HDSDR) or the FCD (which is in the system also a soundcard. BUT: here is the work around; step 1: disconnect the FCD step 2: start ARISSatTLM (only th normal sound card is present, which it selects) (not: in the Tuning indicator no signal is seen) step 3: plug in the FCD (into the USB port of the PC) step 4: start HDSDR and now ARISSatTLM shows the output of HDSDR Voila (the French would say) Henk -Oorspronkelijk bericht- Van: Sion Chow Q. Hank (and the -bb) Attached is the spreadsheet previously mentioned spreadsheet to fix TLEs checksums. I've rewritten it since what I was using was still a tedious operation and I didn't want to distribute that to the community. This should be much better, though you still need to remove any leading spaces in the lines. It appears that O/OREOS' TLEs on their website are OK now, possibly because SpaceTrack is publishing now. My apologies for not getting this out sooner; we'll have to wait for the next launch to try this out. During the fog-of-war in the days after launch, I find there are often multiple TLEs for the same satellite. In this case I like to change the IDs so I can have them all loaded in GPredict simultaneously. This spreadsheet will verify that the IDs are the same for both lines, and of course regenerate the checksums. This spreadsheet was created with OpenOffice 3.2.1, and I've exported it to Excel and checked it with MS Office XP and appears to work fine. Please let me know if there are any problems. If, by the time you read this, the posted TLEs are not 6 5, then the TLEs have been updated and you'll have to generate new checksums. The formula is a sum of all numerical characters on the line, including the line number, treating minus signs as a one and everything else (letters, +, spaces) as a 0. Then take modulus 10 of the sum (i.e. last digit +of the sum). Look it up on wikipedia for more details. I've made a spreadsheet to fix this, but it is still a manual operation for me (got to write a script at some point). Hi Joe May not be of much help, but here is a video summarizing HO-68 modes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6oDgUTHCwg Using an 8 elements antenna + pre-amp I can hear the beacon from 0.1 degrees elevation already At 5 degrees it's rock-solid. Without pre-amp you hear it from 10 degrees or so, depending on your radio. We have heared the FM repeater on a portable radio with a simple vertical. Be aware of the doppler shift at 70cm, which is a few kHz (tune around !). Let us know how it works out for you, I find it really a nice easy satellite to use. Dont panic if you do not hear the beacon/transponder. As mentioned already, there are some problems and both maybe be off (I had yesterday a pass where the beacon was on but also one pass where it was off) Success ! Henk, PA3GUO I have a pass in about one hour now from near Seattle. Since, I've never used HO-68, is the beacon: Downlink 435.7900 MHz CW ?? [amsat-bb] Funcube dongle results Jan 16th
Some more FUNCube dongle results: (not much new information, just want to share my few hours time today to spend on the FCD which I really enjoyed) Using 2x6 elements 145 MHz: - VO52 USB downlink great, with and without preamp Using 1x12 elements 435 MHz - AO51 FM downlink great with preamp, without noisier - HO68 CW beacon great with preamp, good without OK. So with the normal antennas the FCD works great. Time to try thew absolute minumum: Outside in the garden, laptop plus a simple vertical for 145 MHz; ISS packet: nothing heared/seen. Was a surprise to me, as ISS is normally extremely strong. Also tried AO51 FM with just a dipole outside: nothing heared/seen. Both passes were 80 degrees elevation. So for now I guess you need either a beam or a preamp. Then again, the unit is the size of a USB memory stick and has a range 60MHz -1.7 GHz - no complaints ! Overal I am still very impressed. The dongle connected to my normal antenna system (beams + pre-amps) gives great results. Just listened twice to a VO52 pass, and listening in USB was very comfortable, audio sounds very nice until 0 degrees elevation (using WRplus). Amazing to be able to watch the entire downlink spectrum, and see a few QSOs in parallel, seeing multiple stations tuning (their signals going from left ro right and back until they hear themselves). Of course everyone else had SDR for satellites already :-) For me this is just amazing. Great work by the FUNCube Dongle team. We often see discussions on how to get SSB for a few $'s and start to compare various conventional transceivers. Well, the FCD is surely an option to reduce cost on the downlink: all mode / all bands. Henk, PA3GUO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFZGlqKPPQo ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Can Radio Amateur Stations support scientific space missions ?
Dear all, After I installed a new 70cm antenna this week I wanted to 'measure' how good my (modest) station is and how it would perform as a Ground Station for supporting missions as the new RAX, O/OREOS, FASTRAC etc. This new antenna is a simple, 12 elements, vertical polarized beam. No circular polarization. How would it work with tumbling satellites ? Two experiments done: RAX: RAX transmits (only) every 20 seconds a 9600bd beacon. I did a 24 hour fully automated tracking and analyzed all the results: when did I decode, when did I miss. Here is the report with the details and positive results: http://www.pa3guo.com/RAX_Telemetry_Analysis_PA3GUO.pdf O/OREOS: O/OREOS transmits every 5 seconds, 1200 bd, but is weaker as RAX. Just to cheer up others with poor results - you're not alone :-) FASTRAC downlink at 145.825: ISS + other QRM and clearly my 9k6 is not sensitive. Quite a few packets heard, nothing decoded. Here I (my station) clearly failed. FASTRAC O/OREOS downlink at 437: lot of QRM (50Hz humm, 50 KHz wide at 437.320) O/OREOS: Yes I did hear it, 4 second packet period interfal, but I could not decode. Others (eg DK3WN) have better results. Seems 4 KHz above official freq, all the time, so I assume its not due to the keplerset (else that would not be 4 khz all the time ?) Your experiences ? Mike: what does your SDR analysis say wrt the frequency ? O/OREOS keplerset: accepted by HRD (go to keplers, click add file (next to the list of URLs and upload the keplerset manually. But: I suspect it to be invalid, some programs do not accept the O/OREOS keplerset, HRD only accepted after I turned off the checksum check. Anyway lot of new signals to hunt for. [amsat-bb] Re: station add help
Hi Jack I have a Kenwood TS2000, which is very similar to the IC910. For this discussion one important difference, the TS2000 has a build in TNC, which can be used on either bands sat mode. Many years I simply connected that build-in TNC to my PC and used Alogger under Windows (via RS232) for packet. Mostly ISS APRS, but also to command RAFT, ANDE, etc. Two years ago I bought a 2nd hand PK96, external TNC, which I connect to the TS2000 (ACC plug) and PC (RS232). Works fine. It allows me to use the build in TNC on one band and the PK96 on the other band. Also, when I use the build-in TNC, I cannot use CAT (doppler) access. So to do AND doppler compensation (HRD) AND packet I need the external TNC. Also with the PK96 I use ALogger. Another option is to feed the audio to MixW, and create a virtual link in SW: connect MixW to Alogger, then you can set up an APRS Satgate without hardware TNC. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSFVTN2KKog shows how ISS APRS is decoded by MixW. Audio can directly be decoded by MMSSTV for SSTV (both TX/RX). A SW only solution gets you running for SSTV. I did SSTV over HO68 this way: http://www.pa3guo.com/ho68_sstv_dec30_007.jpg One year ago I added an interface between the radio PC, to decouple them physically (for 20+ years I was 'unsafe'). For this I use a kit from http://www.ezkits.eu/. This is insurance only, it doesn't add anything new. Then, I use HRD for Doppler control, but it can do much more including decoding of many digital modes. When you connect the audio of the IC910 to a PC and run MixW you are operational to receive APRS already ! Maybe start there and extend then step by step. (oh, you then can also decode 9k6 from AO51) Success ! Henk -- Henk, PA3GUO http://www.pa3guo.com == I'm in the process of adding digital mode to my satellite station which consists of IC910 radio using SATPC 32 12.8A. I will be using a Signalink USB would like to know if this is the way to go. I will be using it for packet, digipeater, SSTV.etc. Two programs that I'm looking into using are MIXW or mltimode. I would appreciate any suggestions or help about moving foreword with this configuration. Thanks for any input. Jack WA1ZDV ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Re: AO-51 short experiment
My 2 cents: A. I like to have MORE APRS satellites, like PCSAT, RAFT, ANDE, ISS. To my best knowledge we do not have an alternative for such services. B. We do need to improve the usage / behaviour. From the RAFT days I recall: - HAMs using 2 second interval beacons ( !! ) - HAMs abusing features in ISS APRS SW (UISS ??) that allows smart beaconing (as soon as satellite is in view launch a salvo of beacons) (cool feature - but it can be abused) Unfortunately, it's just a limited amount of users, whom are difficult to reach. Once I had the idea of a payload / mode in a satellite that would do just what has been done on AO51: on a scheduled time, start a recording on a programmed frequency, store the recording, be able to re-play or donwload. Kind of like a iPOD + wide band scanner into a cubesat (Spy-In-Space). We could use this as a 'debug' tool, and also demonstrate we do pro-active 'maintenance' on our bands and our own usage of those. Just a thought. Most likely technically way-off incorrect ... A very good resource is the website of Mike, DK3WN, in Germany: http://www.dk3wn.info/satellites.shtml Daily reports on satellite reception are posted here: http://www.dk3wn.info/p/ Here is a video showing a recent satellite, HO-68, which has a CW (morse-code) beacon you can easily receive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=USv=o6oDgUTHCwg Success ! [amsat-bb] Ideas, challenges (for a world wide network)
Hi Carlos ! Thank you very much for your report. Listening to the recordings at your site, I hear they have the same slight variation in volume as on one of my own PC's. I do not know yet what is causing this, but useful to get confirmed form your audio playback - thanks ! Honestly, we do not know what we want to do with this exactly. We need to develop new ideas and applications over time and from others around the world. Ideas: - remote monitor cubesat telemetry (scientific application) - world-wide broadcast of FM satellites (fun, demo) - live audio feedback of AO7 CW: stretch the footprint tests via internet - follow satellites while they travel around the world (multiple upstream stations needed) ... more ? Challenges: - fixed antenna vs beams (beams cannot aim at 2 at the same time) - fixed antenna give lower SNR - TS2000 (now) or SDR (only a receiver is needed, no full trx) - HW: it would be nice to have 1 SDR, with eg AO51+HO68+ISS all 3 frequencies monitored AND doppler compensated simultanious (PA3FWM like but then for sats - http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/) ... suggestions ? Today universities that launch a sat need to wait a few hours after launch before they can hear their own satellite. We often do this for them (ANDE-2 over Netherlands, Delfi-C3 over US first). Would be nice to have a system in place that solves this. Kind of like the GENSO http://www.genso.org/ project, but that by HAMs. Henk, PA3GUO http://www.pa3guo.com Carlos Paoli crpa...@yahoo.com.br schreef: Hi Mike DK3WN, Henk PA3GUO and guys, Mike, unfortunately can not monitor your audio stream, the next time I'll be there, your site is very cool. Not sure which to pick, but having both is valuable. For example HO68 is tumbling a lot (looking at my switching between L and RHCP). AO51 has more stable results: 435.300 vs 435.150 ((I always forget which one is what). 73, Henk -- Henk, PA3GUO ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] Useless experiment running today...
OK Today I have a totally useless experiment running: live streaming of audio from my receiver on the internet. http://www.pa3guo.com/webradio.html Not tested against all platforms (Firefox, Mozilla, ...). No clue how many simultanious listeners I can handle. Anyway, I will monitor HO-68 CW beacon today (435.790). Of course you only hear something when it is overhead at my QTZ (Europe). If you dont mind, I would be interested to hear: - if you could connect - if you noticed the 12 second delay - how much better your own station is (a lot most likely) - which browser used Maybe later I will also monitor AO51/Echo Henk, PA3GUO ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org.
