[android-developers] Re: Cant unenroll/uninstall Android N beta

2016-11-24 Thread Ken Cleveland
Well today, Thanksgiving... with the wind blowing at 3 knots per hour from
the west... the moon waning in Libra and direct as in not void of course...

My Nexus 6P began working again. Sound is back to normal.

Just as what I wrote in the 1st line above has no significance to the
issue, there seems to be no reason as to why this happened nor how it
repaired itself. But it is working.

In case anyone reads this, all seems fine again... other than it did not
save all my settings requiring much reconfiguration even though it was
configured to save.

[android-developers] Re: Cant unenroll/uninstall Android N beta

2016-11-23 Thread Ken Cleveland
For some reason, after the update this AM, I lost sound. Youtube won't
play. When I say Ok Google, there is no sound. If I hold the phone to my
ear, I hear nothing (other person hears me) but I can press speaker and
then I hear.

No music program works.

I tried unenrolling and no link is sent.

build number is: NPF26F so I know it is not the public build.

This is on a Nexus 6P. All stock other than joining the developer program.

Would appreciate some quick help please, google. Phone number or something.

Thanks,

Ken

Why won't you just give them the APK? It's not like that hurts anyone.

Unless, that is, the apps are not really yours and you don't have access to

[android-developers] Re: Future if android

2016-03-08 Thread Ken Lawton
Are you saying it's surprising that high-end developers targeted what they
considered to be the most likely audience when they invested all that time
and money in their development?

It doesn't get more obvious than that.

The two OSs are completely different. At least different enough that it
makes perfect sense to target where you expect you will get the most
traffic. Then develop for the other OS later, as you find the time and
resources.

Hell, I remember when Photoshop was only available on Macs.

[android-developers] Re: Can Google Play Store took an update from my server to update my APK

2016-03-08 Thread Ken Lawton
Not that I've ever heard of. As far as I know, you have to manually update
APKs on your own.

I've never seen any sort of control panel in the Developer Console that
allows their service to go grab a binary from some external site. I would
imagine that to be a security nightmare.

Re: [android-developers] Marshmallow update

2016-03-08 Thread Ken Lawton
When I said "last update" I meant the one previous to Marshmallow.
Lollipop. When that one came out, I had no troubles.

As far as Eclipse over Android Studio... Yeah, shit happens. But if
that's the way the waters a flowing, I'll have to get with it.

Anyway
Considering I haven't found anyone else complaining about this issue with
the widgets, I've not gotten any reports from anyone using my apps, . I am
assuming that it is something on MY device I haven't found anything with
Google searches saying that 6.0 is to blame.

If you wouldn't mind, and since I have your attention... Could you install
one of my widgets and see if it updates on your device?

That the list of all the stuff I have on Play. Go with the Moon Phase or

Re: [android-developers] Marshmallow update

2016-03-07 Thread Ken Lawton
These are apps that have been running with no trouble at all for like 2
years. Even when the last Android update came out, the widgets continued
along as if nothing had changed.
There is no manner of debugging I can do if my current debugging
environment doesn't show any problems at all.

I guess what I really want to know is if anyone is aware of changes to how
the widget update handler works in 6.0 as opposed to every prior release.

In any case... I cannot even compile for 6.0 (23), unless I change my
authoring environment. I've been using Eclipse all this time. When I
tried to update that to the new set of SDKs, the whole thing broke. Then I
find that the SDK is no longer supported with Eclipse. I have to change
over to Android Studio.

Seriously... That is a serious pain in the arse. I like my environment
just fine. And it took a long time to get comfortable with it. Only for
them to say, "yeah, we're not gonna do that any more."
Having said that, if that's what I have to do, then so be it. Just have to
find the time to work it all out.

[android-developers] Marshmallow update

2016-03-07 Thread Ken Lawton
Don't know if this has been addressed here yet. Any Google searching I've
done has only shown me discussion from things like this from years ago...

I am a developer. I have like 13 apps on Google Play. A few of them are
widgets. They have been out in the wild and working fine for a few 1000
people for a long time.
Marshmallow just came out, and installed itself on my phone.

Every single widget now fails to update. And, it's not just mine (although
that's my biggest concern). AccuWeather, and my AdSense widgets don't
update any more either.

My assumption is that because my manifest is pointing to an earlier release
(as far back as 19), they simply won't work until I recompile them with the
new 23 target.
I expected that something like the AdSense app would have been updated by
now, because they are having the same trouble. But it hasn't.

So what's the issue here? Is it just that I'm going to need to recompile,
or is Marshmallow just not allowing widgets to update anymore.

[android-developers] Admob transition/animation

2016-02-28 Thread Ken Tavin
Hello fellow developers!

I am trying to integrate Admob interstitials/pop ups into a Corona SDK
game. Does anyone know how to scroll or animate the adMob interstitial
itself. For instance, when the adMob interstitial is called, rather than
popping up directly onto the
phone screen, it slides in/scrolls in from the bottom and then up to fill
the entire screen? I've tried searching through online for any official
documentation but have had no luck.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks aplenty

Ken

[android-developers] writing unit tests for some networking code and can't simulate network failures?

I'm trying to write some unit tests to handle network outages to see how

Has anyone ever done this w/ automated unit tests?
Or do you just do it manually by mucking w/ settings after a unit test
starts? This of course doesn't work at all w/ continuous builds :-(

hamburger menu...LOL :-)

I always thought that was for jumping to alternate parts of the application
or to use to stuff miscellaneous stuff in like your contact info, about
dialog, etcaka, a replacement for the viewpager tabs + to get rid of
junk in the options menu.
It didn't seem to be a place for dynamically changing stuff that's more of
a contextmenu that the options menu should be used for.

Yep, you can do it w/ that, but what Google's doing in their apps is
something else...it's actually another panel that shifts up when you scroll
around.

Still, I think the split action bar isn't really recommended. Or at least
it wasn't back in the Honeycomb days when they were pushing the soft
buttons. So confusing...or they're trying to add back the pre-Honeycomb
options menu at the bottom that they told us to get rid of when they added
soft buttons :-P

Yep...the panel at the bottom w/ the Camera button. I thought Google said
not to do this? :-P
It's a weird UI pattern. Almost seems to conflict w/ the other UI pattern
where the softkeys (back/home/etc.) hide when you're viewing content.
Scroll down and the camera panel shows up...touch the bottom of the screen
and the softkeys show up. It works fine if your device has hardkeys for
the home button like a Galaxy S3, but doesn't work well on the N7.
There's even a library for it named AndroidSlidingUpPanel.

[android-developers] Google Drive says Action Bars on the bottom are ok?

Just noticed this recently...Google Drive has a few action bar items at the
bottom.

I thought we weren't supposed to put action bar items at the bottom because
it's confusing to users with the soft button bar (with back, home, etc.)
down there as well?

Haven't tried it w/ a BLE device yet though it supports their Galaxy Health

It'd just be an alternative. People have written back ends in other

[android-developers] I uploaded a wrong apk and has pressed the publish button

2013-04-23 Thread Ken
Hi All,

There is a versioning issue in my apk.

The correct apk has a database upgrade (alter table add column).

The incorrect apk has no such database upgrade but with a same version code.

Now, I uploaded the wrong apk to google play and has pressed publish.

I found I cannot remove the wrong apk or re-upload the correct apk.

How to fix it?

Regards,
Ken

[android-developers] Re: In App Billing Error

2013-01-07 Thread Kandarp "Ken" Patel
Finally solved my "User is not eligible..." situation.

In my case it came down to this change in the licensing system:

The *Licensing keys* are now managed for each app individually. To see the
license
key for an application, switch to the new
design<https://play.google.com/apps/publish/v2> and
go to the *Services and APIs* for
the application

I had been using the old license key (which used to be shared across apps)
in my new app. I finally found this little note on the Google play page,
switched to the new design, went to Services and APIs, and got the new
"app-specific" license key, and entered that into my app, and now
everything functions as it should.

Hope this helps!
Ken

[android-developers] SlidingDrawer backgrounds

2012-07-30 Thread Ken H
This may be a stupid question (I just started getting into SlidingDrawers),
but I have some buttons at the bottom of my drawer in a LinearLayout, and I
want to set the background area around the buttons to a solid color -- the
draw slides over a map and I can see the map behind the buttons...I don't
want to see the map behind the buttons.

I know this should be simple, but simple things elude me.

Re: [android-developers] How To Access Device Internal Storage?

2012-05-11 Thread Ken Plumley
Mark,

Is the Android Dev Guide not correct?

The Android Dev Guide makes this claim:
public static File
getExternalStorageDirectory ()
Since: API Level
1

Gets the Android external storage directory. This directory may not
currently be accessible if it has been mounted by the user on their
computer, has been removed from the device, or some other problem has
happened. You can determine its current state with
getExternalStorageState()
.

*Note: don't be confused by the word "external" here. This directory can
better be thought as media/shared storage. It is a filesystem that can hold
a relatively large amount of data and that is shared across all
applications (does not enforce permissions). Traditionally this is an SD
card, but it may also be implemented as built-in storage in a device that
is distinct from the protected internal storage and can be mounted as a
filesystem on a computer.*

In devices with multiple "external" storage directories (such as both
secure app storage and mountable shared storage), this directory represents
the "primary" external storage that the user will interact with.

Applications should not directly use this top-level directory, in order to
avoid polluting the user's root namespace. Any files that are private to
the application should be placed in a directory returned by
Context.getExternalFilesDir,
which the system will take care of deleting if the application is
uninstalled. Other shared files should be placed in one of the directories
returned by
getExternalStoragePublicDirectory(String)
.

2012-03-01 Thread Ken H
Fixed it.

FYI ~ I moved the whole TTS process from my activity to a class by
itself (other activities are going to be using it anyway), but then,
instead of using "this" for the first parameter of the TextToSpeech()
function, I used getApplicationContext(). I also initialized mTts
after initializing all my sensors and gps and stuff.

[android-developers] Cannot get TTS to work

2012-03-01 Thread Ken H
I've tested the APIDemo TestToSpeech example code on my phone (Galaxy
S2) and it works fine, but when I take the *same code* and paste it
into my app the TTS fails. I see an error in the LogCat saying
"intTts() failed to bind to service".

I suspect the problem is in the line:

mTts = new TextToSpeech(this, this);

because this is the intitialization line, and the status I see
returned in the onInit() is always -1. I'm initializing WiFi, gps, the
phonestatelistener, among other things in this app. Is there a
sequence I need to follow? Should I start TTS before/after something?

What is the second arguement in the TestToSpeech() arguement really?
The documentation says it's OnInitListener that gets call after
initialization, but that just confuses me further (I'm using "this"
for both parts). I'm completely stumped.

[android-developers] Re: first time developer

2012-01-30 Thread Ken H
Read "Professional Android 2 Application Development" to understand
Android (if you know Java you have 70% of it already). Get your feet
wet with something simple. My first Android program was basically a
reference app. Nothing fancy, didn't use anything on the internet or
graphics or anything. But it got me use to working with activities and
such.

While Kristopher was a little dickish in his response (it's not off
topic) he is basically right. Again, get your feet, start simple,
build on your experience.

[android-developers] Android Custom Streaming Media Player

2012-01-19 Thread Ken
I have an application that streams videos from my server. The files
end in .mp4 and play fine in the default android player. The thing is
I don't get enough out of the ads displayed on the app as the time of
the user spent on my app is very less compared to the time spent while
watching videos. So, I was thinking of integrating my own custom video
player to the app I made and display banner ads in it while the video
is streaming.

How can this be done?

Thanks

[android-developers] C2DM Question

2012-01-10 Thread ken
We have some questions regarding the Android Cloud to Device Messaging
Framework (C2DM) services.

1.Regarding to enabling C2DM section in
http://code.google.com/intl/zh-TW/android/c2dm/,

°ßIf the registration is successful, the C2DM server broadcasts a
REGISTRATION Intent which gives the application a registration ID.

The application should store this ID for later use. Note that Google
may periodically refresh the registration ID, so you should design
your application with the understanding that the REGISTRATION Intent
may be called multiple times. Your application needs to be able to
respond accordingly.°®

Can we know exactly how long may Google refresh the registration ID,
by one day or a week? And how can Google refresh the registration ID?
Or our application need to fire off a registration intent to C2DM
servers for refreshing the registration ID in a particular time?

2.When we send out our messages to C2DM servers (i.e.
https://www.google.com/accounts/ClientLogin), we found that the
connection speed varies and can differs by several times (from ~25
messages/seconds to ~100 messages/second).

Is the variation of connection speed to C2DM servers normal?

[android-developers] Android ICS Hardware Acceleration for setLayerType issue.

2011-12-27 Thread kaiping ken
*Situation:
*I porting some Android codes from 2.2 to 4.0, and want to enable the HW
acceleration(the Force GPU Rendering option) in this app. Then I found a
lot of compatibility issues, like incorrect texture, color and drawing,
also sometimes will get java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException then crash.

I try to fixed some of them following this mail(
http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/303813cfe0985a63?pli=1),
some parts were better but still not good.

**
*Problem:*
Recently I got a issue like this. The code try to use an API that was
marked in "Unsupported Drawing Operations" list in SDK, on that View I try
to set its attribute as "view.setLayerType(View.LAYER_TYPE_NONE, null);" ,
but after that the app runing with incorrect texture and crash with
UnsupportedOperationException. Change to LAYER_TYPE_SOFTWARE then eveything
is OK, but as we know using software to render into a bitmap and that will
cost a lots of memory, more bitmap more memory, and that will be a big
problem. I was wondering why using "LAYER_TYPE_NONE" still get incorrect
texture?(If using LAYER_TYPE_HARDWARD will 100% with wrong drawing and
crash). Is it "LAYER_TYPE_NONE" like a automation option? That means it
will automate to choose one of the option between SOFTWARE and HARDWARE ?

Thank you very much.

[android-developers] Memory Leak problem (about activity background)

2011-12-10 Thread Ken Yang
Hi!! Dear All,

I have an app that contains many Activity. (ex: i got 10 Activity
which be named a1,a2,a3,a10)

and all of the Activity(a1,a2,a3a10) have background like this.
http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/
android"
android:background="@drawable/bg_normal">

and
a1 will redirect to a2,
a2 to a3,
a3 to a4,
.

then..the problem is happened
【OutofMemoryError: bitmap size exceeds VM budget (Android)】

I think the problem is background..
I know how to unbindDrawable or recycle a bitmap,
but how to release the memory after I change activity
【startActivity(aX,aY)】.

I have tried to 【view.getBackground().setCallback(null)】 at onPause().
but the heap is still not released...

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
or have a better suggestion?

[android-developers] Re: How to calculate the distance between two degree values? (for example: 350º to 15º = 25º / 250º to 190º = 60º)

2011-09-29 Thread Ken H
I would like to reiterate what JackN said -- you don't have enough
info. But a good place to start would here:
http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html

For those interested, a routine for the distance between two points
(on Earth) in kilometers is:

public double gps2m(double lat_a, double lng_a, double lat_b, double
lng_b) {
double R = 6371;//km
double dLat = (lat_b - lat_a) * (Math.PI / 180.0);
double dLon = (lng_b - lng_a) * (Math.PI / 180.0);
double a = Math.sin(dLat/2) * Math.sin(dLat/2) + Math.cos(lat_a *
(Math.PI / 180.0))
* Math.cos(lat_b * (Math.PI / 180.0)) * Math.sin(dLon/2) *
Math.sin(dLon/2);
double c = 2 * Math.atan2(Math.sqrt(a), Math.sqrt(1-a));
return R * c;
}

where lat_a and lng_a are your start coordinates and lat_b and lng_b
are your stop coordinates.

[android-developers] Re: CDMA getCellLocation() does not work

2011-07-08 Thread Ken H
Yeah, I've read the reference pages, it doesn't help...that's why I
asked.

The reference page doesn't explain why the LAT/LON is not known. The
Base Station ID is known, the Network ID is known. Almost everything
in the telephonymanager returns a valid result but this. Why? If you
Google this you will see that nobody actually gets a result from this
method. A simple note from the Android team explaining that they hope
to implement this sometime in the future would help, rather then let
us spin our wheels trying to fix something that doesn't work in the
first place.

And the other question is why is the result an integer? LAT/LON is not
an integer.

Oh well, I never expected a real answer, but I had to ask...thanks.

[android-developers] CDMA getCellLocation() does not work

2011-07-08 Thread Ken H
Does anyone know why getCellLocation() for cdma will not return the
cell site locations? If I use:

TelephonyManager tm = (TelephonyManager)
getSystemService(Context.TELEPHONY_SERVICE);
CdmaCellLocation cd = (CdmaCellLocation) tm.getCellLocation();
int cdmaLat = cd.getBaseStationLatitude();
int cdmaLon = cd.getBaseStationLongitude();

I get Integer.MAX_VALUE for both the cdmaLat & cdmaLon. Why? Has this
not been implemented yet in Android? If not, will it ever? Why is the
value an integer in the first place? LAT/LON should be a float or
double.

[android-developers] Re: "Installation unsuccesfull" messages

> Any suggestions on where to look?

A possible quick fix, tell your users to:

1. Go to Settings
2. Select "Applications"
3. Select "Manage Applications"
4. Select the "Market" app
5. Select "clear cache" & "clear data" & "uninstall updates"
6. Back out and select "Download Manager"
7. Select "clear data"

This might help, but like TreKing said, it's an ongoing issue.

[android-developers] Can an application control the open / closed state of the status bar panel?

2011-02-02 Thread Ken Cross
I have an application which exhibits two different behaviors, possible
related to Android 2.2 vs. Android 2.1 update 1.

The application uses the proximity sensor to determine when the phone
is "near" the ear. If a "near" condition is detected, I get the
applications window and set the LayoutParams to FLAG_NOT_TOUCHABLE and
FLAG_FULLSCREEN. In general, this has the desired effect of preventing
accidental screen touches by the ear from causing any unwanted action.
However...

With my Android V2.2 phones: If I am in the process of sliding open
the Status Bar at the time the proximity sensor detects a "near"
condition, the Status Bar immediately closes and all is good.

With my Android V2.1 phones: If I have the Status Bar partially open,
detect a "near" condition, and then simultaneously (more or less)
revert to a "far" condition while releasing the Status Bar, the Status
Bar is left in a partially opened state. Meanwhile, part of my
application remains visible, but not touchable. I can simulate this at
will with 2.1 phones, but can not do so at all with 2.2 phones.

My questions:

1) Does anyone know why this behavior is different, and if it is
indeed related to different Android versions?

2) Is there a way that an application (such as mine!) can detect if
the Status Bar is opened, or in the process of sliding open, and tell
it to close?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

[android-developers] Marketplace download failure -- anybody else seen this?

I've had a couple users say they can't download two of my apps. The
apps are 1.2 to 2.3Mb in size and the users seemed to imply that the

has a Cliq, not sure of the others. I told them to clear the cache and
data in the Market and Download manager apps, but the one that tried
that says no joy -- it didn't work.

Should they force close the Market app & Download Manager too? Is
there something else to try? I've uninstalled, downloaded and

[android-developers] No ; Do all android systems support vibration?

2011-01-18 Thread Ken Baltrinic
I am looking at putting my first app up on Android Market and am
reviewing the nitty details like setting up the right uses-feature

vibration. Or is this inferred from the uses-permission:
android.permission.VIBRATE entry? Or does it mean that all android
phones are required to have vibration capabilities? If not, to ensure
that my app degrades gracefully, how does one test to see if the
current hardware supports vibration? I have been Googling in vain

If by "any programming using the WebView" refers to the device as a

I am trying to find out if there is a way to add a global WebKit plugin so
that any programming using the WebView will have my plugin in attached. The

I looked at the example under development Samples for browser plugin but
that only works in the browser and only if you include the code in the web
page. I need it to work on any web page.If you have any ideas I can
take you off list and give you a more clear idea of what I am wanting to
accomplish.

top. It is desirable for this to be there (and usable), as there are
options available to the user if the notification drawer is opened.

We use the proximity sensor to detect when the phone is or is not near
the ear. If it becomes near the ear, we do a few things, such as set
the FLAG_FULLSCREEN and FLAG_NOT_TOUCHABLE. If the phone is moved
away again, we undo these settings.

The problem comes in if the proximity is in a FAR state and the user
begins opening the notification drawer. If, during the process of
opening the drawer, the proximity sensor triggers a NEAR condition and
then FAR again, the notification drawer can get left in a partially
open state. While in this state, touch remains disabled for our
application. Touching the partially open drawer will clear the
condition.

The drawer can be left partially open with a minimum presence
(essentially, a double height status bar) which would in most cases
not be observed by the user. Thus, the user reports a problem that
our app is broken.

The solution I am looking for is a way to tell the handler of the
notification bar/drawer to close the drawer if the near state is
detected. Of course, if anyone has other ideas on how it might be
possible to solve the issue I described, I'm all ears!

Thanks,

- Ken

[android-developers] Locking the notification drawer

2010-12-08 Thread Ken Cross
Hi,

I am working on a voip application for the android.

When I am in a cell call on my android phone (DroidX), I find that the
notification bar at the top seems to be locked. In other words, I can
not slide it down to open the drawer to the expanded view.

My question is, how do I lock the drawer so that it can not be opened
from my application? In my voip application, it is also possible to
be in a call via Wifi and I would like to have the same behavior with
regard to the notification bar / drawer in my app.

Thanks,

- Ken

[android-developers] Re: What is Cursor??

2010-12-06 Thread Ken H
CURrent Set Of Records = CURSOR

This is more of a SQL term then a Java or Android thing. When you
query a database you get a list of records back (think Excel
spreadsheet). A CURSOR would be one row or record from that list. The
important thing about them is they let you walk through your query
result set.

[android-developers] How to disable Gallery center-locked

2010-11-29 Thread ken huang
Hi everybody,

I am so glad I can be the one who join Android`s big family.
Obviously, I am still new to Android.
I am finding a way to display horizontal and circular photos, but I
found ListView and GridView, they all cannot meet the requirement,
they only can display them Vertical.

 Now, I turn to try Gallery this component, but I hope to disable
the auto center-locked, just like scrolling ListView. Can you kindly
to guide me how to implement this, any suggestion is appreciated,
thanks in advance~

[android-developers] Android Market update bug?

2010-10-11 Thread Ken H
I have a Nexus One using 2.2.1 and was notified that four apps had
updates, so I opened Market and clicked "Update All", exited Market,
hit the power button to put the phone to sleep and put it away. The
next day I look in the Market and those apps still say "Installing..."
I can't cancel them and rebooting the phone did nothing. They just
show the progress bar with the hash marks scrolling by...

I can still use the apps though. I don't want to see what happens if I
uninstall mostly because I'd loose the data in the apps. The battery
doesn't seem effected, so right now it appears to be just an
uncomfortable curiousity.

Anyone seen this?

RE: [android-developers] Re: How to debug web page on device?

2010-09-09 Thread Ken Perry

I think you're doing it the same way I am. I use addJavascriptInterface to
add logging class to any JavaScript I write. Then I can use the Android
Java log class to write to the log cat. I tag the logs with the keyword
"javascript" so I get a nice neat list of whatever I want to see.

Debugging webview can be tricky. A lot of the errors print in the
console. Mostly the problems aren't going to be actual JavaScript
errors if it renders fine in other devices but will be due to some
oddity in the way a particular manufacturer implemented webkit. I've
seen lots of differences in the devices. HTC is particularly odd.
Motorola is particularly good. I haven't dealt with the Samsung
variants yet but I hope they are closer to Motorola than HTC.

One way you can debug webview is to put a function in your app that
logs messages from the webview with JavaScript calls. Then sprinkle
those calls liberally throughout the JavaScript and just monitor what
happens. Look for differences in the way the devices render things.

I use this method and have found it cumbersome but effective. I use a
lot of webview stuff so if someone else knows a better way, I'm all
ears.

[android-developers] Javascript, WebView, and arrow keys.

2010-09-09 Thread Ken Perry
The following question has to do with Froyo 2.2 sdk 8 running on an
emulator.

I am injecting Javascript into a web page and in the WebView activity I
get 19, 20, 21, and 22 for key codes for arrow keys. At the Javascript
level all four arrow key values in a keydown handler come in as zero. The
following is the java script code I am using to set the handler and to get
the keyValue.

window.addEventListener('keydown', keyDownHandler, true);

function keyDownHandler(evt){

var keyCode=evt.keyCode;

myLog(keyCode);

}

I will note that keys like enter come in correct for example I get 13 for
enter. I also will note that if I press shift and then an arrow key I get
16 for all 4 arrow keys instead of 0. myLog function takes a String but the
following works

If (keyCode==0){

myLog("arrow key");

}

So the value is coming in as zero is there some way I can fix this. If
someone has time I have a pretty simple example of this problem I could
probably zip up as an eclipse project.

Thanks,

Ken

[android-developers] AutoCompleteTextView and Ajax-like request

2010-09-01 Thread Ken
Hello,

I am trying to implement an AutoCompleteTextView backed by HTTP
requests. i.e., the content of the suggestion comes from a web service
and is obtained by a HTTP request (for example, the symbol lookup
field on Google finance).

Here's the code I wrote to initialize the autocomplete field:

final AutoCompleteTextView field =
(AutoCompleteTextView)findViewById(R.id.lookup_input_field);
List suggestions = new ArrayList();
final MyAutoCompleteAdapter adapter = new MyAutoCompleteAdapter(this,
R.layout.auto_complete_dropdown, suggestions);
field.setAdapter(adapter);
field.addTextChangedListener(new TextWatcher() {
public void afterTextChanged(Editable s) {}

public void beforeTextChanged(CharSequence s, int start, int count,
int after) {}

public void onTextChanged(CharSequence s, int start, int before, int
count) {
String newValue = field.getEditableText().toString();
adapter.valueChanged(field, newValue);
}
});

And here's the valueChanged method of the adapter. The suggestion
retrieval is done in a thread to ensure responsive UI.

public void valueChanged(final AutoCompleteTextView view, final String
value) {
final Handler handler = new Handler() {
public void handleMessage(Message msg) {
clear();
List suggestions =
(List)msg.obj;
for (String suggestion : suggestions) {
add(suggestion);
}
notifyDataSetChanged();
}
};
new Thread() {
public void run() {
List suggestions =
SearchHelper.search(value);
if (suggestions.size() > 0) {
Message msg = new Message();
msg.obj = suggestions;
handler.sendMessage(msg);
}
}
}.start();
}

Here's my problems: a) The suggestion dropdown doesn't always show up
on each keystroke, even though I know the SearchHelper has
successfully requested and returned suggestions based on user input.
b) When I select an item, the onTextChanged seems to be invoked again
and the suggestion dropdown shows up again.

Sorry if someone has discussed this issue but I wasn't able to find
any examples for my scenario.

Thanks!

[android-developers] Retransmissions from PBX after disconnecting from emulator (charging) using sipdroid

2010-08-19 Thread Ken Cross
Hi,

I'm a newbie to Android development but a very experienced developer
in the area of telephony applications. I am working on a sip client
for Android, currently working with the Nexus One, Android 2.2 and
sipdroid 1.5. Connectivity is via Wifi to our PBX. I am using UDP
protocol.

My problem is this. When the application starts, it of course
registers with the PBX (via wifi). The REGISTER is responded with a
200 OK from the PBX and the phone is registered. This works fine when
the phone is connected to the PC and charging. However, as soon as I
disconnect from the PC (now running on battery), the first 200 OK for
REGISTER appears to be never received by the phone. This causes a
retransmission of the REGISTER after 2 seconds, to which the PBX again
responds with a 200 OK which is now seen and the phone registers.

I have gone fairly deep into debugging this but as of yet have found
only dead ends. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I hope this is the right place to post this. If there is a better
place, please let me know.

Thanks,

- Ken

[android-developers] Webview not fit to screen

2010-07-30 Thread Ken
Hi,

When I load a URL in my webview, the page always appears with full
size and I am unable to zoom out (I did call
setBuiltInZoomControls(true)). The webview is wrapped in a
LinearLayout with fill_parent for both dimensions.

Is there a simple way to fit the content of the webview automatically
to the screen? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply guys. At the end I ditched the listview and
replaced with a webview. So now instead of using a listview with
numerous webviews, I have one webview with bunch of DIVs rendering the
individual contents. That works our well.

[android-developers] make AccountManager.getAuthToken() prompt for credentials again

2010-07-28 Thread Ken Hughes
I hope this is a simple problem I'm overlooking. I'm working on an
app which uses the account manager to get an auth token. The first
call to manager.getAuthToken() prompts the user for permission to
allow the application to access their login/password.

I'd like to remove this permission. It doesn't have to be from an
application. If there's some setting within the Android UI to clear
it, or view which apps have which permissions and then clear them,
that's fine too.

[android-developers] How do you handle a pound sign (#) in a string?

2010-07-23 Thread Ken H
I built a music player in my app and just discovered a little quark
while trying to play "#1 Crush" by Garbage. When I send the songs path
to the MediaPlayer, everything from the # sign on gets dropped off. I
tried inserting a "\" in front of it, but that causes everything
*after* the pound sign to get dropped. And I'm having trouble
inserting "\\" in there.

I know this is a simple fix, but, Friday afternoon, I can't think of
it.

[android-developers] WebView in ListView

2010-07-22 Thread Ken
I've implemented a list with each item as a WebView. The WebViews are
loaded in their own threads so the UI doesn't have to wait.

The problem I've ran into is after the list is loaded, some webview
items disappears or repeat after the list is scrolled. I've read posts
from Romain Guy and others about how this is a bad idea. Just
wondering if it's still a bad idea or a solution has been found since
Cupcake.

Thanks!

[android-developers] Authenticating an app

2010-07-19 Thread Ken
Hi,

I wonder if it's possible to authenticate an app with a http server.
THe server API does not require user name or password, but I'd like to
expose the server API to a particular app only (so that it cannot be
abused by other program).

At this point I think it's impossible but figure it won't hurt to
ask.

Thanks.

[android-developers] Emulator loses network connection issue

2010-07-16 Thread Ken
Hi,

I wonder if anybody has ran into the issue where a running emulator
would lose network connection all at a sudden for no obvious reason.
And I am sure the computer running the JVM is still online.

Restarting the emulator seems to fix the issue but it's been a major
PITA for me as it interrupts the workflow.

I am using 2.1 SDK 7.

Thanks.

[android-developers] Re: Accuracy of location.getAccuracy() GSM and GPS - exact Meaning?

2010-07-02 Thread Ken H
> But what does that mean exactly?

You already answered your question -- it's the accuracy of the fix in
meters. If it returns "4" your position is accurate to +/- 4m. If
you've ever used the Google map and seen the blue circle around your
position (which should quickly shrink to your flashing dot position),
then you are seeing your GPS accuracy graphically. As the phone's GPS
refines its calculation and acquires more satellites the accuracy will
increase.

[android-developers] Replicating fastscroll like in contacts

2010-07-02 Thread Ken H
I'm looking for a tutorial on implementing the fastscroll feature
found in the contacts view. I'm using a ListActivity with a custom
array adapter to display my list (I use subtext under the main text
info).

I've seen the List9.java class in the samples directory, but it's not
the easiest example for me to follow -- I'm not ashamed to admit the
concept of the subclassed array adapter baffles me, even though it
works quite nicely. All my attempts to use this have ended with a FC
and an unceremonious boot to the desktop.

Is there one good example out there that explains things? Failing
that, maybe different examples? I'm listing songs on the sd card...you
know, the usual.

[android-developers] Are there default permissions added to apps?

2010-06-30 Thread Ken H
I wrote an app in which the only permission I give in the manifest is
internet access,

but when I check the list of permissions in the Application Info it
says:

Storage
modify/delete SD card contents

Network communications
full internet access

Phone calls
read phone state and identity

My app is a simple reference doc that has a few outside web links
embedded in it. It does nothing to the sd card, let alone the phone.
What's going on?
