Chandrima.Pal Posted On Saturday, September 04, 2010 at 08:55:19 PM From Internet blogs to the denizens of Delhi’s South Block, everyone is splitting hair over his compositions. But the man behind it all is ensconced in his Chennai studio, unfazed by the furore around him. Like the proverbial eye of the storm. For A R Rahman, these are the best of times, the worst of times. His art is at its most eclectic, garnering international acclaim heralding him as one of the world’s best. In his own country detractors are declaring that he has lost his touch. He is buying a five-acre plot in Los Angeles to set up his production facility with sound engineer Resul Pookutty. He is also being accused of being indifferent, aloof to his Bollywood projects, delaying them and churning out music that often stumps listeners. With every milestone in the West, Rahman seems to move a step away from home. His fiercest critics are ironically in the industry that has given him his biggest successes — until of course Slumdog. The Hindi film fraternity has always had an uneasy relationship with Rahman, who is still god down south. Many in Bollywood find it hard to accept his artistic ways – he remains in Chennai, works mostly at night, has his own creative yardsticks for choosing projects and delivers only when he is ready. Some feel his best is behind him, others feel he is constantly breaking new ground. “Given his style of functioning and his inaccessibility,” says trade expert Amod Mehra, “Bollywood always had a problem working with him.” Rahman has never made any excuses for the way he functions. And his studio can seem forbidding, or inspiring. “There is a divine energy there,” says Subhash Ghai, who has shared an emotional bond with the composer since his Shikhar days. “It is not your usual sharaab-kebab kind of atmosphere that you encounter in most Mumbai studios.” Ghajini-producer Madhu Mantena, who has worked closely with Rahman since Rangeela, too says watching the maestro in his studio is like entering a very sacred space. CONSPIRACY THEORIES But Rahman’s inaccessibility – which critics say has increased post his international-success – has not helped. “If you are a newbie,” says a producer who has met the maestro and is still waiting for his verdict on his proposal. “You have to make at least 10 trips to his studio to discuss your project with him. Unlike other music composers, money is no criteria for him. There is no saying why or when he will pick one project over the other,” the producer adds. “Now he is zipping around the world,” rues an ad filmmaker who is still waiting for a meeting, “it is almost impossible for one to get his time and consent.” Rubbishing these as conspiracy theories, Mantena points out that Rahman has worked with several newcomers including Abbas Tyrewala, whose Jaane Tu... he had accepted way before Aamir Khan came into the picture. “Besides, he is so dedicated to his work that each song probably goes through more changes than the script itself,” Mantena reveals, agreeing with other insiders like Ram Gopal Varma. “No matter how pressured he is, Rahman will never let a tune pass until he is happy about it.” On the flip side, that can translate into nail-biting moments for the always-in-a-tearing-hurry Bollywood producer. Thus, the notion that Rahman is delaying projects. Mantena denies the maestro kept him waiting for months for the title track for his latest, Jhootha Hi Sahi. “There are nine songs and the time taken was the same as any other album,” the producer says. There were also rumours that the Jodhaa Akbar music launch was delayed because the soundtrack was not ready, though the label and the production house denied it. The Commonwealth Games theme took six months, and then it was back to the drawing board after the organising committee wanted Rahman to make changes. “A single failure does not bring anyone down, not at least Rahman, who still has the mass with him,” says Mehra, referring to the Commonwealth controversy. “However, Rahman has not been showing his best elements on his recent works,” he adds. “You cannot judge Rahman on the basis of one song,” says sitar maestro Pandit Kartick Kumar, who was featured in Rahman and Bharat Bala’s Jana Gana Mana project. Pandit Kumar worked with Pandit Ravi Shankar during Asiad ’82, when the sitar legend composed the then-hugely popular Swagatham. “People have been comparing that tune to what Rahman has created. It is not fair to compare a classic with a more contemporary track,” Pandit Kumar says. “But, yes, maybe Rahman should not have sung the song himself. Just because his Vande Mataram clicked, does not mean he can bring the same energy to every song he lends
[arr] Danny Boyle on 127 Hours
MTV: In terms of the music, it's A.R. Rahman doing the score again after Slumdog. Can you speak a little about what he's done? Boyle: We've got a couple of songs, and the rest of the work is more guitar-based. Some of it is solo guitar, which felt appropriate given the nature of the story. Got a couple of wonderful songs. Free Blood (Never Hear Surf Music Again) at the beginning, which we used for the trailer. Music has always been a big part of a movie for me, and I hope we've done another one justice we've what we've used. Full Interview : http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1647109/20100902/story.jhtml At the 81st Academy Awards in early 2008, Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire took home eight awards, including Best Director, while Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler lost both categories in which it was nominated. But that didn't stop Boyle from wanting to emulate Aronofsky's cinematic approach for his next project. Thus, 127 Hours. follows one central character, in much the same way that The Wrestler focused on Mickey Rourke's damaged grappler. Boyle's new film is based on the true story of an avid outdoorsman who becomes trapped under a boulder in the wildness and is forced to saw off his own arm to escape. James Franco plays the unfortunate hiker. The film is one that Boyle has wanted to make for years. Only after virtually sweeping the Oscars, and being inspired by Aronofsky's style, though, did he move forward with the project. As part of MTV News' Fall Movie Preview, Boyle called us to chat about how his career has changed since Slumdog, the challenges of making a film about a man who can't move, and why 127 Hours may not be the ideal date movie. MTV: How are you? Danny Boyle: Good. We're mixing 127 Hours at Pinewood, and we've been kicked out of the big theater by Harry Potter. We're next door in the little theater. MTV: I guess if you're going to be kicked out by anybody, they have a big thing going on. Boyle: They're not even here! Do you know what they do? It's a big bank holiday this weekend here in Britain, and we're working right through the weekend to get it ready, and what they do is they book the theater for months and nothing happens! It's like, Really? MTV: Well, it is great to talk to you. So, you had, you know, a little bit of success with Slumdog Millionaire. Coming off of that, why this one? Boyle: I'd always wanted to do it. The story has an instant tension that draws everyone's attention to it. So many people remember it vaguely. But it wasn't that. I wanted to make the film and I tried to get it going. Of course, it's a tough subject, but I had a way of doing it that wasn't what you think. It would be compelling and would occupy you completely as a viewer so that the whole barrier — it's just one guy stuck in one place — that wouldn't become an issue because you'd be with him. You would be him, in effect. That was always my take on it. Anyway, once Slumdog kicked off, [producer] Christian [Colson] and I thought, This is our chance to make this. There's no other moment in our careers when we'll get a chance to make something like this, which is really a tricky prospect for any studio or financier. So we worked on it, we prepared a script, and then we had to find an actor. That's the key to this. Beyond our vision of it, you have to have someone who's not only going to share the vision but actually going to carry it much more than any film like Slumdog or a thriller or a big love story or anything that has a plot or the dynamics changing between two people. It's just one guy. We got Franco. He's amazing in it. MTV: There are a couple ways to go off something like Slumdog. Either you go with the project you've been wanting to make, or I'm sure you were offered every project under the sun. Boyle: I don't think like that. It's such an amazing thing that happened that you have to take advantage in the right way. It's why we wanted to get [127 Hours] ready for Toronto, because that's where we started with Slumdog. We wanted to take back there a film that had been made in its shadow. It's wonderful to do that, because suddenly it's not an intimidating shadow, it's liberating because it's a success that's allowed you to make something you've always wanted to make and you believe but wouldn't get made otherwise. Even though people, before they see the film, might think it a peculiar choice, but the film is really accessible. Whether they can get people into [the theater], I don't know. If you want to take a girl on a Friday and say, What should we go and see? it's tough to say, It's a film about a guy who cuts his arm off. What do you think? But once you're in there, it's a big story for everyone. It's a very universal thing. MTV: What are the challenges for you as a filmmaker, keeping things dynamic, and the challenges for an audience? Do you imagine them feeling what Franco is feeling for the length of the movie? Boyle: I

'Swagatham', A R Rahman’s anthem for the Commonwealth Games, has received anything but rapturous welcome. People who have heard it are cool, downloads are flat, music professionals are looking away – even politicians are denouncing the song. The slow-paced number, sung by Rahman himself, has got everyone wondering whether this is what the Games deserves. PollWhy does the CWG anthem Swagatham not work for you? Slow-paced Lacks punch Style of Rahman is missing While everyone may wonder what went wrong, it’s worth remembering that Rahman, for all his apparent Midas touch with melody, has had his share of duds. Unfortunately, the tune that the nation was looking forward to has turned out to be one of them. Some of the songs Rahman composed in his early years for Malayalam and Telugu films have remained unpopular. Fans who have grown used to the trademark Rahman style over the years have also complained the composer is repeating himself. Towering expectations of the man dubbed “Mozart of Madras” of repeating the legendary success of ‘Roja’ in every film may have also led to a slump in quality in some soundtracks. “I’ve heard better from Rahman,” was the common sentiment on the streets when “Jai Ho” received international acclaim. Here, then, are Rahman’s top 10 dud soundtracks from a musical career spanning almost 20 years – songs that have either bombed at the charts or simply faded from memory for lack of fizz: 1. 'Swagatham': A nation, eagerly awaiting its own ‘Waka Waka’ from its trusted composer, is bitterly disappointed at the outcome of the Commonwealth Games anthem. Critics call it a “cacophony” while fans find the punch missing. 2. 'Raavan': The music of Raavan is dark and appeals to specific audiences. One of the most anticipated films of 2010, Rahman brings in contemporary techno and marries it off to Punjabi folk creating tracks like ‘Thok de killi’ that lack the hummability of ‘Behne de’ or its staying power. 3. 'Fire': Rahman composed the background score for Deepa Mehta's Fire. It had the appeal of any Rahman classic but failed to leave a mark in India as the soundtrack was available only through mail order from a German company. 4. 'Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya': Rahman’s Tamil album comes after a hiatus of two years and disappointed fans say the songs lack character. 5. 'Parasuram': Rahman tries to experiment with lyrics in ‘Jack and Jill’ and the effect is disastrous. Fans trash the music of this 2003 starrer and ‘Dolna Dolna’ is the only song that leaves a mark in an album that has songs sung by Hariharan. 6. 'Jeans': After a decade, ‘Ajooba’ sang by Hariharan is the only Jeans soundtrack that sticks with audiences. Beautiful lyrics by Javed Akhtar and Hariharan’s lilting vocals failed to move traditional Rahman fans looking for more than just instrumental fusions and contemporary background score. 7. 'Mr. Romeo': This Prabhu Deva starrer had songs such as “Mona Lisa” composed by Rahman that faded with the film. 8. 'Yodha': An off beat Malyalam film that had Buddhist music in it, shifting away from the usual Rahman style. 9. 'Lovebirds': ‘No Problem’ – perhaps the only song that has outstayed the film’s shelf life – is part of a collection put together by Rahman that is mostly forgettable. 10. 'Kadhal Desam': Rahman sang some of the tracks of the 1996 Tabbu starrer. While Mustafa Mustafa went on to become a hit with several versions being replicated on the internet by budding artists, numbers such as 'Hello Doctor' never caught on.

[arr] Why CWG song is targeted by...
Why CWG song is targeted by... Opposition - The name itself says Opposition, what more can one expect from them. Even if CWG becomes a success, they will oppose it saying that the country didn't need these games and only tax payers money was wasted on this. Media - Not every day they get a chance to publish a news against Rahman. Just to show that they are not partial to Rahman in everything he does, they are publishing these kind of articles. So they are using this opportunity to criticize his work by asking opinions about this song from every tom, dick and harry.. Government - Some of them from Govt are using media to convey their displeasures about this song. Why? To divert the attention from other important things(incomplete venues etc etc) and make ARR and the song the scapegoat. After all, they are the easy targets you see. So called Senior Music Composers - Firstly, they can't digest the fact that why only Rahman was asked to compose a theme song and why they were not...and the most hurting factor for them is the price tag that is floating around for that song.. Fans - Nothing new with these poor fellows...Some of them have genuine reasons for their dislike and others are still in 90's mode. They still refuse to believe that Rahman is a human being. They want Roja's and Thiruda Thiruda's all the time..and when Rahman gives them the album with 90's touch, they say that the song is outdated and Rahman has lost his touch... Just my opinion...not to hurt any one...

Also, tracks like Rehnuma from BLUE, match his Thiruda THiruda-Rangeela levels... Couples Retreat was also excellent.. THen different ppl have different favourites. For me, I love the sounds in Endhiran, but Iam unable to find soul. But many ppl in the group were lucky to find soul in Endhiran. Then, from Sivaji, Oru Koodai and Sahana are my only favourite songs. Whereas that is not the case of others. My all-time favourite is thiruda thiruda. Thatz not the case of all. So it all depends and varies on tastes. That is what makes our BOSS great. There are many ppl in India with totally different tastes.. But they unite under one umbrella and call themselves Rahmaniacs. Y...Because ARR is great enough to cater to a wide range of audience. Saying ARR of the 90's was better than ARR of the 2000's is not right. According to meARR till 2006 is better than ARR after 2006 (atleast for Indian assignments)..And that maybe jst for me.

The film tells the story of Aron Ralston (James Franco), the mountain climber who had to amputate his own arm with a dull knife after a 2003 hiking accident. Check out their reaction below. Todd McCarthy wrote of the Coen brothers A Serious Man, “This is the kind of movie you get to make after you’ve won an Oscar.” The same can be said of Danny Boyle’s latest, 127 Hours. In telling the true story of a climber who is forced to amputate his arm after being trapped for five days, Boyle and James Franco certainly do a lot with a little. The cinematography by Boyle regular Anthony Dod Mantle and Enrique Chediak is beautiful and inventive. The score bySlumdog Millionaire composer A.R Rahman is strong » - Jordan Raup

Probably he wanted Mughda to say it out aloud herself. There were many people out there who have no idea what KMMC is, including my mom. Hif ARR wasn't singing it, would it still be as liked? I wonder why ARR choose this song to sing. Maybe for diversity... wanted to try his voice on another techno track besides Fannah? [arr] Rediff reviews Endhiran music
http://movies.rediff.com/report/2010/aug/02/south-music-tamil-review-endhiran.htm Every film of director Shankar or superstar Rajnikanth [ Images ] has beaten previously set box office successes after Sivaji, their first venture together. Now with Sun Pictures' Endhiran, science-fiction adventure, the hype has only increased. This time the dynamic duo has join hands with another icon, A R Rahman [ Images ]. Proof of their excitement is evident in the way Shankar and A R Rahman have penned their thoughts in the helpful lyric-booklet that accompanies the CD: How do I describe Endhiran? It is excitement, entertainment, a huge, fresh dream ... goes on the director, while the music maestro calls it the movie that will define Tamil cinema. A score of lyricists such as Vairamuthu, Madhan Karki and Pa Vijay have contributed the words to this much vaunted blockbuster in the making. Here's a look at what Endhiran has to offer. First off we have what sounds like machinery powering down, followed by a forlorn echo. You can't really recognize S P Balasubramaniyam's voice without his name being mentioned. A R Rahman's voice is easier to make out, as it really suits the robot format -- unemotional, crisp and metallic. The lyrics are themselves meant as an awakening, and Khatija Rahman's young voice adds an almost reverence to it. This of course, is only the prelude to the much more zest-filled Pudhiya Manitha. Veteran SPB's voice gives full vent, touching the high and low notes with equal ease. The ending is strangely peaceful. It's a song that celebrates a new birth, and it does justice to the event. There's no doubt at all about what kind of song Kadhal Anukkal is going to be -- the melange of instruments that warble in a delighted fashion tell you that it's yet another scientifically romantic number, bringing Newton along for the ride. It does remind you, in parts, of an earlier Rahman number, Omana Penne, but has enough drive to carry it on its own strength. The refrain in particular is catchy, even as Vijay Prakash and Shreya Ghoshal [ Images ] sing with enthusiasm. Though it doesn't scale heights of brilliance, it manages to be sweet. The Chitti Dance Showcase, as a departure from other numbers is, as you might expect, a piece meant to display the many perfections of the robot. Rendered by Yogi B, Praveen Mani and Pradeep Vijay, it's a mixture of synthesized rhythms and carnatic music, even bringing in a dash of melodious western symphony on occasion. It's short and to the point. Irumbile Oru Idhayam begins with heart-thumping enthusiasm, while a female voice kicks off the refrain with energy practically flying off the CD. The futuristic mood is ever-present, and appropriately, the number starts in English. Rahman himself takes the vocal reins in a voice modified to suit a robot. It fits in quite well, especially in accompaniment with Kash n Krissy. The song itself is abrupt and has a choppy feel, entirely suitable for the mood of the song. It's all romantic, this number, but suffused with equal parts of sensuality. You can't help but smile at phrases where the robot fails to shutdown at night. In fact, it's the English rap that rather fails in its appeal. The robot's voice in itself, and the faint angst in it are quite pleasant; it's easy to fall into its rhythm. The lion-king arrives as Arima Arima kicks off with trumpets blaring and then into ominous, royal-esque music that heralds, not surprisingly, the arrival of a king. The song is typically hero-centric, with both male and female lavishing praises on the hero. Certainly, the superstar's image stands up well to the praise, and the rumbling background arrangement adds to the depth. Like a good many of Rahman's numbers lately, the song, sung by Hariharan [ Images] and Sadhna Sargam seems to slip away from a structured format. There's a good deal of English thrown in too. Still, certain phrases, like Akrinaiyin arasan naan, and Kaamutra kanini, are unique and intriguing. Others, like Aisukke Ice, though a direct and flattering reference to the former Miss World, aren't that appealing. The second instrumental interlude has certain interesting variations, before returning to the charanam which heaps accolades on Aishwarya Rai Bachchan [ Images ] as well. There's a certain majesty to the song; the refrain works quite well, which goes a long way towards elevating this song from just another praise-filled number to one that gives you something, musically.Kilimanjaro begins, expectedly, with a distinctly African feel -- drums, what feels like a spider chittering across a table-top, a gaggle of words, a thumping beat. Javed Ali and Chinmayi kick off the high notes. It's simplistic, steady, and the words are a jumble of Thamizh and who-knows-what, but when accompanied by the rousing rhythm, make you forget. Rather jarring are the oohs and aahs that add an erotic note to the song for this is a rather
[arr] The Hindu reviews Endhiran music
http://www.thehindu.com/arts/cinema/article547834.ece Music to the ears With its blend of melody, trance and rhythm, “Enthiran — The Robot” sounds like a winner It's finally here — the music of the much-awaited Rajinikanth-Aishwarya Rai starrer “Enthiran — The Robot”. Chennai may have lost out on hosting the formal music launch event (it was held in Malaysia), but the album has hit the stands in stores across the city, and it's time to check out what the maestro A.R. Rahman has to offer the Superstar this time, after their super-successful last outing in “Sivaji — The Boss”. The first track of the album, Pudhiya Manidha, truly sets the mood. A futuristic trance number, the songis all robotic voices and hypnotic rhythms, and captures your imagination right away. In typical Rahman style, it's more than just another trance track — it also has a haunting, invocatory tone, both in the lyrics by Vairamuthu (the recurring refrain is Pudhiya manidha boomiku vaa)and in the music itself, which can be goose-bump inducing. A terrific opening for an otherworldly sci-fic epic's soundtrack, for sure. Kadhal Anukkal, the second number, is the perfect contrast to the first, and opens with a gorgeous guitar intro. A lilting romantic duet, sung with style by Vijay Prakash (and ably supported by the sweet-voiced Shreya Ghosal), this song comes as a breath of fresh air, infused as it is with pretty harmonies and dreamy musical interludes. In an album filled with thumping beats and futuristic robotic voices, it provides welcome respite (even if its lyrics are liberally sprinkled with words such as ‘neutron' and ‘electron' and ‘Newton'). An instantly appealing number, with Rahman at his melodic best. And then, it's back to future with Irumbile Oru Irudhaiyam (featuring Rahman and Kash n' Krissy), a purely techno track with pounding breakbeats, a mix of English and Tamil lyrics, and more of the computerised voices and sound effects and such. It's almost certain to become all the rage at clubs around the city, along with the next track, Chitti Dance Showcase, which, as the name suggests, is a hardcore dance number, with virtually no lyrics. Chitti…has such an eclectic mix of rhythms and styles that only Rahman could have carried it off — some hip-hop, some heavy metal guitar riffs, and even some symphony orchestra and konnakol mixed in for good measure, all set to frenetic beats. It's a short piece, but boy, does it pack a punch! There are some things you expect from every album of a Superstar movie, and one of them is His Song. You know, that wonderfully celebratory number to which Rajini will fill the screen in his inimitable style. For “Enthiran”, Arima Arima is that song. It has the triumphant trumpet calls and the majestic drums, the chorus singing praises; just a dramatic piece overall to which you can picture Rajini striding forward, jacket flying regally behind him. Kilimanjaro, the penultimate number in the album, is quintessentially Rahman. A playful and quirky song with an infectious refrain and a thumping beat, it features some lively vocals by Javed Ali and Chinmayi. It has tribal-sounding interludes, but manages to be super-modern at the same time, and grows on you with every listen. Quite likely to become one of the immediately popular numbers from the album. The final number, Boom Boom Robo Da with a rap track by Yogi B, is one of the slightly more forgettable songs in the album, though has its moments too, with its multiple elements, including a softly Latin interlude, and a title refrain that's likely to keep looping your head. The album is classic Rajnikanth in parts, classic Rahman in others, with a heavy-duty dash of the futuristic thrown in. The emphasis on techno and dance might mean it isn't to everyone‘s tastes, but overall, it's unlikely to disappoint fans of either the Superstar or the Mozart of Madras. Greater access It's been craziness and chaos all around, but it's finally done —the “Enthiran”CDs have been packed and shipped out by Think Music. “We've tried to set up as many ways as possible for customers to access ‘Endhiran'content,” says Priya Krishnan of Think Music. Those ways include setting up a mini-store online at enthiranthemovie.in, where you can buy the seven tracks either as singles or as an album, and, in the process, get access to branded badges, posters, and best of all, first-week tickets to the movie. “We've sweetened the deal by making 5,000 tickets available on the Web,” says Krishnan. This is to provide people who want to download the music online with legal alternatives. Anti-piracy planning has been a core part of the process for Think Music this time, including a link-up with antipiracy.org, a U.S.-based team that specialises in bringing down infringing websites and content on sites such as youtube. “We've already caught 300 piracy sites in the space of just 24 hours,” she says. http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/musicreview/9874.html Endhiran Music Review Print E-mail this Endhiran - Rhythmachine! IndiaGlitz [Monday, August 02, 2010] AR Rahman’s compositions for Shankar have always been chart toppers. Considering the fact that the movie stars Superstar Rajinikanth and is a big budget science fiction movie, Rahman has tried too much of techno beats! The lyrics by Vairamuthu, his son Karki Madan and Pa. Vijay use scientific words and even science as body of the songs at times. Music dominates in a few songs that lyrics are not so prominent and no wonder the CD box has the lyrics book for the listener to ‘read’! Puthiya Manidha Listen here Singers: SP. Balasubramaniam, AR. Rahman, Khatijia Rahman Lyricist: Vairamuthu Going by the names of the vocalists, it could possibly be the introduction song of the hero. SP Balasubramaniam’s sung most of super star Rajinikanth’s songs and all being super hit! In fact, even for a superstitious sentiment, SPB’s voice is mandatory! ‘Puthiya Manidha’ shows the making of ‘the robot’ in the movie! ‘Puthiya Manidha’ starts with the synthesized voice resembling a robot and slowly AR Rahman chips in with his vocals as though a computer singing! Rahman’s daughter Khatija sings the prelude of the song slowly. And after this prelude the tempo increases gradually with the graceful voice of SPB singing the lyrics. Through out the song, the listener has this feel of being in outer space! The techno beats, the fillers and the electro-chorus all give that ambience. The song has an attractive music pattern in the background composed by Rahman. He’s given best of compositions for introductions before but somehow thing song doesn’t reach the ‘Rajini standards’ yet all depends on how Shankar presents this on screen. Listen to the song for the ‘robot touch’. Kadal Anukkal Listen here Singers: Vijay Prakash, Shreya Ghoshal Lyricist: Vairamuthu Everything positive about the song! From the beginning till the end! AR Rahman uses the strings amazingly as Vijay Prakash starts singing the duet! As soon as the para starts, the beats used create that positive temperature. Shreya’s voice as usual is fabulous. Vijay Prakash with the chorus sings the lyrics ‘Oh Baby’ soon after every stanza cantabile. The instrumentation is pleasant with effective percussions as well as harmonious fillers and they are not too jarring. Shreya’s balance of pitch is extraordinary, look at her flow from the low to the high pitch, and no wonder a singer to beckon! Irumbile Oru Idhaiyam Listen here Singers: AR. Rahman, Kash 'n' Krissy Lyricist: Karki, Kash 'n' Krissy (English) ‘Irumbile Oru Idhaiyam’ marks the debut of Karki, Vairamuthu’s son as lyricist. A song that talks about the robot having a heart! Lady Kash and Krissy are talented singers and their services have been used perfectly by AR Rahman. Rahman sings this song himself! The start up of this song might remind you of a popular western number but the majority won’t be aware! The hip-hop beats are classy and the word ’Super Star’ from the ladies sounds amazing! AR Rahman and Kash n Krissy sing this song with lot of energy as the tempo of the song keeps increasing! The percussions are used effectively. Take notice of Kash n Krissy’s rap, especially their rendition of Tamil! ARR’s music is truly international. Listen to the glissando in every stanza; he’s tried to infuse the electronic tones to create the ‘robot touch’! Must listen song! Chitti Dance Showcase Listen here Singers: Pradeep Vijay, Pravin Mani, Yogi B An instrumental track possibly, an interlude. Rahman is a sheer genius and when it comes to beats, he is incomparable. This track talks about all that, as his instrumentation in the background is classy. Adding to that is Yogi B’s rap and the fusion of Carnatic rendition! As the song progresses, as soon as the reprise, the tempo varies! So could be a title track but answer awaits only on the screen! The end note: You are missing a musical genius if you don’t listen to this! Arima Arima Listen here Singers: Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam, Benny Dayal, Naresh Iyer Lyricist: Vairamuthu A paean on the hero! The song starts with the rhythms of a royal introduction to the hero! As soon as the chorus diminishes, Hariharan starts the song with a varying modulation. The tempo of the song and its background sound something similar to a previous Rahman’s tune but he’s tried to cover that with obvious modifications. Sadhana’s humming in the behind when Hariharan sings soothes the listener’s ear. When its her turn, Sadhana has sung it well yet flaws of her Tamil pronunciation can be spotted! The sub verses remind you of old Rahman’s compositions but the fillers change that illusion. A terrific song as it progresses, thanks to Hariharan’s expertise! Kilimanjaro Listen here Singers: Javed Ali, Chinmayee Lyricist: Pa. Vijay A tribal song with tribal beats but the song

Off late, I have been highly disappointed with the audio launch functions of Rahman's bollywood movies. They have been calling it as a music launch but its been of more off a movie launch kinda page 3 event and with hardly any discussion about the music and people involved in creating it... Have a look at Rahman's two recent regional releases..VTV and PULI, where the focus is on music, the people involved in itI feel, this is what is called Music launch. All the guests speak about the music and share their experience instead of just performing or playing the songs on the stage..in short, Music is at center stage and not the stars... Check out the audio release function of Aa Aaha as well. Its such a satisfying experience for a fan to see such kind of launch functions...They might lack professionalism, but at least the music is given the importance and recognition it deserves...

[arr] RICHARD CORLISS on RAAVAN
http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1999246-1,00.html For the lovers of Indian films at home and around the world — and they number in the hundreds of millions — the coming of Raavan held the promise of celebration: Holi and Diwali in one blast of musical drama. Its creator, Mani Ratnam, is the subcontinent's premier writer-director (his 1987 Nayakan made TIME's list of the 100 all-time best movies), though he usually works in his home town of Madras, and in the Tamil language, not in Hindi Mumbai, aka Bollywood. The movie's stars, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, are Indian cinema's golden couple: he the son of superstar Amitabh Bachchan, she the former Miss World (and TIME Asia covergirl) who made her film debut in Ratnam's 1997 Iruvar. The music director is A.R. Rahman, a Ratnam discovery whose infectious melodies in more than 100 films have made him, by some accounts, the world's best-selling recording artist. Last year Rahman won two Oscars for his Slumdog Millionaire score. (See TIME's Summer Entertainment Preview.) In 2007 this eminent quartet collaborated on the popular, well-received Guru, a fictionalized bio-pic of the Indian plutocrat Dhirubhai Ambani. (Abhishek and Aishwarya, known everywhere as Abhi and Ash, fell in love on the set and were married shortly after the opening.) The new film would be a modern retelling of The Ramayana, the beloved Sanskrit epic about the kidnapping of Sita, wife of the monarch Rama, by the demon king Ravana; Bachchan would play the kidnapper, Rai the abductee and the Tamil star Vikram her husband. Filmed in three versions — Hindi (as Raavan), Tamil (as Raavanan) and Telegu (as Villain) — and released last weekend on 2,200 screens around the world, including 109 in the U.S., the picture had all the makings of a critical success and an international hit. Except it wasn't. The local reviews ranged from disappointed to scathing (though the few American critics were more indulgent). The film's global weekend take, of Rs 52 crores, or about $11.6 million, fell far below that of the recent Indian hits 3 Idiots, My Name Is Khan and Kites. Film fans were soon jamming the internet to express derision toward Raavan and complain about Bachchan's outsize acting style. So noisome was the tumult that, on Sunday, Papa Amitabh took to Twitter to blame his son's character's erratic behaviour on the director's vigorous editing style: Lot of merited film edited out, causing inconsistent performance and narrative. Ratnam Tweeted back: Amitji should have conveyed me whatever he wanted to say, he has my cell no. One of India's all-time top film stars and its greatest living auteur were dissing each other like sophomore cheerleaders in a Facebook snit. (Watch TIME's 10 Questions with A.R. Rahman.) So, you ask, how is the movie? Rather, how is the Hindi version, the one shown in the U.S.? Well, Raavan is better than you'd be led to think by all the outrage; it's just not up to the director's high standard. It begins with a vibrant chaos of images, as Rahman's ultra-catchy tune Beera Beera (listen to it on YouTube) accentuates the propulsive pace. The movie boasts some impressive stunt work, as the stars or their stunt doubles slide down rock faces, drop through tree branches or navigate a giant waterfall. The best action scene takes place on a rickety foot-bridge with the purported hero dangling over a ravine, his life literally in the hand of the purported villain. And at the very end the film ventures into the territory of ethical ambiguity. But in between are wastes of creaky incident without much enriching of character or plot. And the central performance by Bachchan is either a bold stab at thespic immortality or an essay in grotesque derangement. Maybe both. A region troubled by insurgency gets a new Chief Inspector: Dev (Vikram), accompanied by his faithful wife Ragini (Rai). In short order, Ragini is kidnapped by the legendary rebel Beera (Bachchan) and held for 14 days —as opposed to the 14 years of the queen's captivity in The Ramayana — while she juggles her hatred for Beera with a growing sympathy. In a flashback, we learn that Beera has abducted Ragini in retaliation for the long-ago abuse suffered by his beloved stepsister Jamuniya (Priyamani) at the hands of the local police. Meanwhile, in his desperate search for Ragini, Dev finds an ally in the forest guard Sanjeevani (Govinda). Den and Beera finally clash, on the wooden bridge, but what seems like the movie's climax is just where it starts to get interesting. While Raavan may not be not up there with Nayakan, Roja, Bombay and Dil Se, it's very recognizably a Mani Ratnam film. His work often touches on controversial real-life figures (Mafia bosses, revolutionaries) and incendiary political issues (terrorist kidnappings, the Bombay riots of 1992-93, the Sri Lankan war), and Raavan is no exception. Ahbishek's Beera, while clearly a version of The

[arr] Raavan earns highest distinction from the U.S. Media
http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/hindi/article/57977.html Raavan earns highest distinction from the U.S. Media IndiaGlitz [Monday, June 21, 2010] Well, the goras are loving it and so are the thinking audience in India. But the west media is totally swept by the striking images and the quality of filmmaking by our genius from Chennai Mr. Mani Ratnam. The movie has got the rare distinction to be called as a ‘Critics Pick’ a distinction rarely if ever earned by an Indian film. Leading American daily ‘The New York Times’ hailed it as a ‘Critics’ Pick’. The world top entertainment trade publication ‘Variety’ and ‘Hollywood Reporter’ too have praised the film that opened Friday on over 2200 screens around the world in 35 countries including US and Canada. ‘Raavan’ has “Bollywood glamour aplenty, with the lovely if occasionally dramatically challenged Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Bachchan’s wife, playing the Sita stand-in,” said the New York Times. “The real star, though, is Ratnam, a talented visual storyteller who directs action crisply and fills the screen with striking images.” The reviewers in west are very much impressed by A.R. Rahman’s ‘excellent score’ and Mani’s way of strory telling. Praising cinematographers Manikandan and Santosh Sivan, production designer Samir Chanda and editor A. Sreekar Prasad for serving “Ratnam superbly with images, settings and vitality that take one’s breath away,” the publication thinks “success is inevitable throughout India and with expat audiences.” “And that, folks, is entertainment,” was the Times’ verdict. Well the home land may not given such overwhelming support to Mani but its sure as mentioned in our Hindi review of the ‘Raavan’ that the movie is for the connoisseurs of ‘quality’ cinema and the team should be happy that a film based on the most popular Indian epic ‘Ramayana’ is getting immense praise from the west. A rare achievement which underlines the fact that you don’t have to visit Korea or Iran or America to churn a quality cinema. The Hollywood reporter has termed it as a ‘Pan-Indian saga with epic sweep, intense emotion and gorgeous images.’ East or west Mani Ratnam is the Best, we are proud of you Mani Sir.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Entertainment/Music/Rahmanthe-most-downloaded-Indian-artist/articleshow/5985261.cms Britain has become the top country to download Bollywood music abroad while AR Rahman has been declared the most downloaded Indian artist, according to a new research . Bollywood tracks have found particular favour with listeners in Britain, where over one in four tracks downloaded is a Bollywood song. Following suit in the downloading department are Singaporeans at the second spot, who are responsible for nearly a third (31 per cent) of all Indian music downloads outside India. While Finland and Germany occupy the third and fourth slots respectively, Australian music fans account for a fifth of the global total. The UAE, South Africa, Switzerland, Mexico and Russia round off the top 10 respectively. In India, Bollywood songs represent over half of all downloaded tracks (54 per cent), with western pop and ghazal next in line. Among Indian artistes, Oscar-award winning music composer AR Rahman leads the way as the world’s most downloaded Indian artiste. He is followed in popularity by playback singer Sonu Nigam, JoJo, Himesh Reshammiya and Shaan. Udit Narayan, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar and Salim-Sulaiman occupy the rest of the spots in that order. The research was conducted by a mobile phone company based on the number of downloaded songs across 35 countries until mid-March 2010.
[arr] Semmozhiyaana Thamizh Mozhiyaam - Song Review
http://movies.rediff.com/review/2010/may/25/south-review-tamil-ulaga-tamizh-semmozhi-maanadu.htm Rahman's Tamizh Anthem is a pleasant experience May 25, 2010 13:43 IST Scholars and academicians are gearing up for the biggest academic event of the year, the World Classical Tamil Conference to be held in Coimbatore from June 23 to 27. In preparation, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi [ Images ] has already released the Conference's anthem titled Ulaga Tamizh Semmozhi Maanadu, tuned exclusively by A R Rahman [ Images ], and filmed by director of the moment, Gautam Vasudev Menon. Sung by 30 different artists who represent the cream of Tamil industry's musical elite, the lyrics have been penned by Kalaignar Karunanidhi. Here's what the anthem has to offer: With an enthusiastic crash begins the Semmozhiyaana Thamizh Mozhiyaam anthem, starting out with the first Thamizh letter (the letter morphs from its earliest, centuries-old version to its present form), and the impressive words, Pirappokkum Ella Uyirkkum, sung by legend T M Soundarrajan after a flash of Thiruvalluvar's statue at Kanyakumari, eagerly picked up by A R Rahman himself, singing Yaadhum Oore, Yaavarum Kelir. Other singers like Harini, Chinmayi and Karthik follow, singing the simple phrases that make up Thamizh's long literary lineage and even as Karthik's voice rises in an impressive crescendo, the instrumental background score takes over, and the song proper begins. Montage shots of stone-etched Thamizh inscriptions flow, while Hariharan [ Images ], A R Rahman and Yuvan Shankar Raja croon the song, and then the entire team of songsters take up the refrain, Semmozhiyaana Thamizh Mozhiye while the words glow in the background. The beat thunders while it rises and ebbs across the musical plane. In the midst, another legend, P Susheela takes up the song, even as the Thamizh alphabet runs across the screen. Bharathanatyam dancers flit around while G V Prakash, Nithyashree Mahadevan and Sowmya show their vocal power, classical fashion. Abruptly, the song changes courses, with strains of nadhaswaran, while Blaaze suddenly jumps into the fray with Thamizh rap, bizarrely beginning Kamba Nattazhwan The words sound odd and forced, but after a while, the fusion actually begins to appeal to you, courtesy the rhythm. Dazzling Thamizh letters intriguingly emerge from boiling oil as murukkus, while ethnic singers take up the chorus. From hereon, the jump from classical to rap occurs more frequently; the melody is unstructured, yet appealing. Thamizh's gradual ascension from stone temples to blackberrys is shown. Singers like Naresh Iyer sing in pop fashion on brightly-lout stages, while at the same time, poi kal kudhirai and karakattam dancers spin around in festivals; even Chinna Ponnu contributes. The anthem, meanwhile, rises slowly note by note, closing with a grand crescendo amidst crashing beats, even as the chief minister sits at his desk, signing documents with a flourish. The lyrics themselves are unstructured at best, and take some time getting used to but the meaning contained within the instrumental arrangement and varied vocals make it a very pleasant musical experience. Praise for Thamizh is lavishly sung, even while exploring its development through the centuries, its ability to adapt and stay within the common man's grasp without dying out, and evolving into the digital age. A R Rahman has gone with his favourite template, it seems but even when you can predict the rise and fall of notes, it's still very appealing for the swift shift in genres and style. The lyrics and picturization undoubtedly add to the allure. Rediff Rating:

http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/entertainment/raavan-music-soaring-charts_100368955.html May 24, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Raavan’s music which released last month in April is a sensational hit already. The music given by Oscar winning A R Rahman is beautiful as always. The lyrics by Gulzar, no need to say, make a way for themselves straight to your heart! No doubt the music of this much awaited flick is creating such a buzz. Raavan’s music has been climbing to the top of the music charts of various radio channels. Besides, there are also special requests to play tracks from the movies’ album. “Behne De’ seems to be the track loved by most. This mind-blowing song with beautiful lyrics by Gulzar and Rahman’s amazing tune has an undeniable romantic touch to it which casts its magic on the listeners. This track has made many lose themselves in a trance! This is the track for which there are, maximum number of requests and which is constantly topping charts! “Beera’ is a track which has to be mentioned as it has the most unique flavour to it. It’s unforgettable and one of its kind as it apparently is a song which portrays/ introduces the audiences/ listeners to the character Beera played by Abhishek Bachchan. “Thok Di Killi’, “Khili Re’ and “Ranjha Ranjha’ are more songs from the movie which have enchanted the listeners. This movie has already been predicted by some to be a box-office hit! We will have to wait and see whether the film works or not! But the soundtrack is definitely working – and doing great at that! The music of this film is sure to be listed as one of the best of Rahman’s glorious music career! – Sampurn Wire

[arr] Movie Review: ‘Jodhaa Akbar’
Late..but latest.. :) http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/35682/ Eighty elephants, fifty-five camels, and over four thousand kilograms of gold jewelry reportedly went into its production. In addition to “Braveheart” style battles and courtly intrigue, Ashutosh Gowariker’s “Jodhaa Akbar” also features several lavish musical interludes. Welcome to Bollywood cinema, the internationally popular flamboyant films produced in Mumbai (formerly Bombay). Growing in recognition and popular acclaim with American audiences following the success of 2009 Oscar winner “Slumdog Millionaire,” the Film Society of Lincoln Center launches “Muslim Cultures of Bombay,” a retrospective of Bollywood’s most ambitious and socially conscious historical dramas, this Wednesday with a special screening of Gowariker’s three and a half hour epic. The young Emperor Akbar has finally consolidated the Muslim Mughal Imperium’s hold on all of Hindustan. For the sake of peace with the restless Hindu Rajput principalities, Akbar has taken Jodhaa, a Rajput princess, as his bride. She also happens to be very beautiful but is less than thrilled by the proposed union, only acquiescing when the Emperor promises to respect her faith and build a modest Hindu temple for her within the palace. While duly married, it will take a serious campaign of wooing for Akbar to win her heart. Of course, India has experienced years of Hindu-Muslim conflicts, even predating Kashmir and the Partition. It is that subtext that deeply informs “Akbar.” While Rajput reaction has been highly critical, accusing the film of whitewashing the anti-Hindu campaigns of the historical Akbar and his heirs, western audiences will likely interpret it as a rebuke of militant Islam. Whether historically accurate or not, the film’s pivotal decision to lift the tax on Hindu religious pilgrimage clearly celebrates religious tolerance. While the disapproving mullahs of the Mughal Court are unflaggingly portrayed as deceitful and intolerant, the heroic Akbar’s observance of Islam comes across as simply a requirement of his position rather than an examined faith. By contrast, the only unambiguous example of pure religious devotion is that of Jodhaa’s Hinduism. Notwithstanding the important social and religious significance of the story, it is very definitely grandly epic story telling. Wild elephants are tamed, pitched battles are joined, and there are indeed musical numbers, courtesy of “Slum Dog” Oscar-winning musician A. R. Rahman, perhaps the best being the Sufis serenading Akbar on his wedding night. It also has Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, often heralded in Internet polls as the world’s most beautiful woman, as Jodhaa, and Hrithik Roshan (soon be seen in “Kites,” a major Bollywood trial balloon for mainstream American commercial acceptance) as Akbar. JODHAA: Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan portrays half of the title character in Jodhaa Akbar. While their chemistry is okay, the film is most successful when luxuriating in the grandeur of its enormous scale and lush design. It even inspired a Jodhaa Akbar collection from the Indian jeweler Tanis. With some cool battle scenes and most of its courtship done through fencing, “Akbar” certainly satisfies the audience looking for more on-screen swordplay. It also has plenty of romantic yearning and high tragedy as befits a sweeping epic. Old fashioned in an entertaining way, the extravagantly produced “Akbar” is a perfect choice to kick-off the FSLC’s new retrospective, “Social Dramas and Shimmering Spectacles: Muslim Cultures of Bombay Cinema,” this Wednesday evening (May 19) at the Walter Reade Theater.

AR Rahman has promised to produce a fusion musical score that will span the world. Two versions will be made – one with a tragic ending for western markets and the other with a happy ending for the North African, Middle East and South Asian markets. “The rapidly growing economies of the east provide an avenue for revenue that western production houses are only just waking up to,” explained Phyllida Lloyd, the director. “This is just the first of a proposed series of three musicals that New Moon will put into production this year.” Miley Cyrus and Mitch Musso are scheduled to appear in Fast Lane with Billy Ray Cyrus and Angelina Jolie scheduled to play the parents of a troubled teenager who gets led astray by a fast-living party-girl, who has to face tragedy before discovering true friendship. Up-and-coming singer Paloma Faith is scheduled to star in Destiny, a movie about an innocent young woman from Ciudad Juarez, who is kidnapped by people traffickers and forced into prostitution before eventually being rescued by her childhood friend who never gives up hope of finding her after she disappears. But is the woman he finds the same woman he lost? “Isn’t it significant that this major announcement should have been made on this day of all days,” asked an industry spokesman.

Nikhil was perfect with the Flute and Saxaphone. Sanjeev was at his usual best with the guitars and the strings section was mesmerising with 6 violinists. It was a perfect concert. Enjoyed it a lot. [arr] The most notable omissions from the Oscar 2010 shortlist.
http://www.altfg.com/blog/awards/oscar-2010-its-complicated-julianne-moore-190/ Which movies were totally ignored by the Academy? Which performers and filmmakers were ignored? The list is quite long, of course. Below are the most notable omissions from the Oscar 2010 shortlist. Marc Webb’s (500) Days of Summer, Pedro Almodóvar’sBroken Embraces, Todd Phillips‘ The Hangover, Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story, Duncan Jones‘ Moon, Cary Fukunaga’s Sin Nombre, Sebastian Silva’s The Maid, and Olivier Assayas‘ Summer Hours were totally left out. And so were Richard Linklater’s Me and Orson Welles, Nancy Meyers‘ It’s Complicated, Steven Soderbergh’s The Informant!, John Hillcoat’s The Road, Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are, Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo, Jim Sheridan’s Brothers, Roland Emmerich’s 2012, and Grant Heslov’s The Men Who Stare at Goats. Among the individuals left out wereJulianne Moore (A Single Man), Samantha Morton (The Messenger), Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man), Robert Downey Jr (Sherlock Holmes), Marion Cotillard (Nine), Catalina Saavedra (The Maid), Clint Eastwood (Invictus), Michael Haneke (The White Ribbon), Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria), Abbie Cornish and Ben Whishaw (Bright Star), and Diane Kruger and Melanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds). Also, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel ((500) Days of Summer), Sam Rockwell (Moon), Alec Baldwin (It’s Complicated), Saoirse Ronan and Susan Sarandon (The Lovely Bones), Christian McKay (Me and Orson Welles), Nora Ephron (Julie Julia), cinematographer Dion Beebe (Nine), plus A.R. Rahman’s song Na Na (Couples Retreat), Agnes Varda’s documentary The Beaches of Agnes, and Warwick Thornton’s best foreign language film semi-finalist Samson Delilah. It’s always good to remember that all of the above may — and likely did — get a number of votes. Some may even have showed up on a majority of the ballots — but as a result of the preferential voting system their potential nominations went kaput.

Tamil Nadu feels proud on this grand occasion of her son getting the highest global awards. I convey my hearty congratulations to you for attaining the top position in music. It is to be noted here that Rahman, who is set to score music for a theme song penned by Karunanidhi for the World Classic Tamil Conference, called on the Chief Minister recently. During the meeting, the top politician hoped that the music composer would emerge victorious at the Grammys.
[arr] Why is Rahman's Grammy win Special?
http://www.glamsham.com/movies/features/10/feb/02-why-is-rahmans-grammy-win-special-021008.asp Why is Rahman's Grammy win Special? February 2, 2010 3:40:00 PM IST Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network A.R.RAHMAN A R Rahman is the fourth Indian, who has won the Grammy awards, his predecessor being Pandit Ravi Shankar (twice), Ustad Zaakir Hussain Rakha, Pandit and Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt But Rahman's feat is indeed different from his predecessors as it is for the first time that film given in music by an Indian music director has been considered worthy enough to be awarded Grammy. Grammy awards, as a matter of convention are given for individual excellence in music and it has happened after a long time that music given for a film has won the award at Grammy, as it has happened with SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. Last time a film had swapped the Grammy awards was with THE SOUND OF MUSIC. For this sheer fact the award won by Rahman needs to be savored, highlighted and is a matter for which every Indian or for that matter everybody who is associated with Indian film music should feel proud about. It is acknowledgement about the outreach of Indian music and signals its arrival on international platform in a big way. Before advent of Rahman on the international platform through his unique style of music, where mukhda, antara do not find any distinct but all of them merge into each other, the kind of Indian music making waves at the international levels and coming into contention was that characterized by emphasis on Indian sounds. The emphasis on Indian sounds was to maintain the distinctness of the nodes, but Rahman made the concept stand on its own head as he relied on the western instruments, fusing them with the Indian sounds to create his own unique sound, which has literally mesmerized the world of music aficionados. Rahman has taken the Indian music to a new platform and it is for the others to follow upon it. One distinct feature of Indian music that provides it the edge as compared to the western music is the difference in the number of nodes. While the western music comprises 5 nodes, 2 nodes characterize Indian music. The additional 2 nodes provide the opportunity to the Indian music creators to strive for additional sounds. Rahman has indeed shown that he is the wizard as far as production of different kinds of sounds in the composition of music is concerned, and it is this experimentation with the sound which has emerged as his hallmark and helped him stamp his authority at the Grammy awards as well. To borrow the title from Rashmi Bansal's book, STAY YOUNG STAY FOOLISH, Rahman's music spreads the spirit of youth among all the music fans and also provides them an opportunity to continue to flirt with being foolish so that the new scales of performances can be aspired for.

[arr] Music needs more government patronage, says Rahman
Read the last para..that's interesting.. :) http://www.deccanherald.com/content/50112/music-needs-more-government-patronage.html - Music needs more government patronage, says Rahman Los Angeles, Feb 1 (PTI) Music maestro AR Rahman has once again done India proud with his double Grammy win but the artiste feels that music needs more ''government patronage'' in India. The 'Mozart of Madras' who was recently chosen for the Padma Bhushan honour, won two Grammies for his composition in the rags to riches blockbuster 'Slumdog Millionaire'. I hope it opens up more doors for the creativity that India has and I wish there was more government patronage. I hope that the award will help shape a lot of things better, said Rahman. The 44-year-old musician's golden Grammy moment was reminiscent of his victory at the Oscars last year where he bagged two Academy awards besides winning a Golden Globe and a BAFTA award earlier. Rahman whose song 'Na Na' from his Hollywood debut 'Couple's Retreat' has been shortlisted for an Oscar this year, said that his journey has come full circle with his latest win. It's like the culmination of a roller coaster ride. It has come full circle because the Grammys are like the father of all music awards, said Rahman. But the musician has no plans to uproot himself to Hollywood, because in his own words he is grounded in India. Well you will not lose me. I am grounded in India. The awards just mean that I have more responsibility now and I will be expanding my roles and getting involved more creatively in the process of filmmaking, said Rahman.
[arr] I am happy Rahman won the Grammy - Ustad Amjad Ali Khan
http://movies.rediff.com/report/2010/feb/01/amjad-ali-khan-on-losing-grammy.htm Ustad Amjad Ali Khan may have lost out on a Grammy [ Images ] win at the 52nd Grammy awards but the maestro is very happy for A R Rahman, who won two Grammies this year. The Ustad was nominated in the Traditional World Music category for his album Ancient Sounds in collaboration with Iraqi oud artiste Rahim AlHaj. Patcy N asks Ustadji about his loss. Are you disappointed about losing at the Grammies? No, not at all. I am happy that Rahman won an award because an Indian musician got it. Personally, I did not enter any kind of competition when we recorded the album Ancient Sounds in America, with Rahim AlHaj. We did not have any idea of the future of the album. The album's producer decided to enter the competition. I was not even aware until I was nominated. You had said that the Grammy win was important because the sarod would become popular. Do you feel bad that the sarod may have to wait longer for attention? I have been travelling for all over Europe and America for 20 years, so the sarod is already popular. Also, my country has given me many honours like the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and a doctorate from Shantiniketan. Douga Mansa won the Grammy in the category that you were nominated for. Have you heard his music? No, I have never heard his work or the album which was nominated. Do you think Rahman deserved the Grammy? Yes. He is so young and committed to music. He has done a diploma from Trinity College. He gives a freshness to film music. I like his music and the fact that he is young. The future of India [ Images ] is in the hands of young musicians, whether they are classical or film music composers. I hope he creates more appealing and peaceful music for disturbed people so that they get peace and tranquillity. He will go a long way in life. What are you working on right now? I am writing orchestra symphony for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, which will record in March in England [ Images ]. I also have some offers in collaborations. I think I should take them up to popularise my sarod. I am doing collaborations very late in life but I have realised that we have to show the world that we are one through music.

[arr] Planetradiocity reviews VTV
http://www.planetradiocity.com/musicreporter/review.php?reviewid=428 Another Gem from Rahman R Richard Mahesh, Sampurn Media Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya Artist: Benny Dayal, Kalyani Menon, Devan Ekambaram, Chinmayee, Karthik , Vijay Prakash, Blaaze and Suzanne, Naresh Iyer, A R Rahman, Shreya Ghosal and Alphonse Music Director: A R Rahman Lyricist: Thamarai Label: Sony Music Genre: Regional Printer-Friendly Version Review: It cannot get better than this. Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya binds the listener in a fantabulous spell of awe-inspiring magnificence. The aesthetically enriching songs invigorate our spirits with the poignant lyrics and a completely unparalleled musical charisma by academy award winner A R Rahman. For those, who had been looking forward to listen more from Rahman following his Oscar triumph, the breezy numbers will make you fall in love with it over and over again. As Rahman mentioned in his recent interview, he has gone beyond the limits of the clichéd patterns of typical Tamil film music. Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya has seven resplendent songs with unique rhythms and catchy instrumentals. The first song ‘Omana Pennae’ speaks of the beauty of a Malayali girl with mesmerising soft rhythms on chimes and more fill-ins. Well, you’ll tend to hear so many light instrumentals with its very prelude. Though the rhythmic pattern faintly resembles Rahman’s yesteryear composition ‘Cinderella’ from Kangalal Kaidhu Sei, it touches your heart for its lyrics. The mellifluous tone of the Nadhaswaram (most popular classical south Indian non-brass acoustic instrument) adds more beauty to this song. The theme of ‘Anbil Avan’ (a day to remember) blends Hindu and Christian wedding tunes. You’ll first hear the chords played by a church organ, fused with Mridangam and Nadhaswaram adding to the Hindi flavour. The highlight of the song is the fusion between the traditional wedding song ‘Anandham Anandham’ played during intermezzo. Deva and Chinmayee have crooned the number brilliantly. The title song’s brevity and simple lyrics and music work in its favour. It has detailed work on guitar elements and will acquire everyone’s interests only after the film’s release. Sing praise to the God! ‘Hosanna’ means it all and is commonly used in the Christian community. It’s a jubilant song crooned by Vijay Prakash, and is about a guy falling in love. The stringed section which goes along with finely exquisite melody makes it sound enchanting. Featuring two singers from Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire is yet another additional attribute that enhances the song. ‘Kannukul Kannai’ invigorates and fills your spirits with sublime emotions. The opening notes played on cellos and violins adds to the attention-grabbing factors. Naresh Iyer’s rendition of one-on-one style keeps us engrossed. Shreya Ghoshal conveys an aura of elegance and gentility with her voice while A R Rahman croons his lines with a typical touch of ‘Tu Hi To Meri Dost Hai’ (Yuvvraaj) for ‘Mannipaaya’. It may not top your list of favourites after one hearing, but is bound to grow on you. A pleasant bucolic romantic solo rendered with a stunningly high-pitched tone of Alphonse – ‘Aaromale’ can safely be classified as one of the best songs of the season. For sure, it would top the charts of the global music market. Kudos to Alphonse for his mind-boggling vocals. On the whole, Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya has A R Rahman’s seal all over it. Naturally, the Mozart of Madras exceeds our expectations with a unique touch over every song. As of now, ‘Omana Penne’, ‘Hosanna’, ‘Aaromale’ and ‘Anbil Avan’ have already made it big on the charts while the rest of the numbers would gradually make their claim to fame.

Actually he is known for originality. but thats' not true i think. May be he have used nepali tunes since nepali people don't listen tamil song and though no one will know it. Only i am the person to listen tamil songs as well since beign a fan of arr. The music starting from 1:37 to 2:38 in Anbil Avan is ditto copy from one of the nepali songs. I dont remember the song but the music is exactly same. I doon't know why arr uses it. Also, the additional voices tune in Aaromale is also seems to be copied . I have already heard that tune in one of the nepali songs.IIf i wil find those nepali song then surely i will share in this group. Prevously Vishhal-shekar also copied some nepali tunes. anyway arr is great. bye n enjoy arr music.

Rahman captivated the 70,000-strong audience in Parramatta on Saturday night with a spectacular musical show. Photo: James Alcock A.R. RAHMAN Parramatta Park, January 16 MORE than a concert, this was a gesture: A.R. Rahman performed for free as an affirmation that the friendship between Australians and Indians cannot be fractured by moronic and violent element. These sentiments were echoed by the Premier, Kristina Keneally, in launching the concert. She then welcomed to the stage that most popular of Australians in India, the former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh, who eloquently expressed his own distress at the violence. He went on to describe Rahman as the Sachin Tendulkar of music. Given that Tendulkar may be the second finest batsman in the game's history, that is to somewhat overstate Rahman's significance (as does his ''Mozart of Madras'' tag), but Waugh's good-natured words were enthusiastically received. Rahman was rapturously welcomed by what was probably the largest gathering of Indians ever seen in Australia, among the 70,000-plus crowd. His international recognition results from having composed the score for the multiple Oscar-winning movie, Slumdog Millionaire. His success in India was already stupendous, built upon albums, concerts and soundtracks. His appeal lies in an ability to cross and mix genres and clearly he is a gifted composer and singer. But what emerged on the night was largely trite pop music made into dance spectaculars via dozens of colourful, cavorting bodies, a vast lighting rig and even fireworks. Visually it became an apotheosis of kitsch, rather like Olympic opening and closing ceremonies. But that's Bollywood. Meanwhile, my internal organs were being rearranged courtesy of the force of the bass end of the PA - something of no concern to a four-year-old girl in front of me, who danced happily throughout, and had all the moves. Rahman was only an intermittent star of his own show, often leaving the stage to the huge cast of singers, dancers and expert musicians, and occasionally leaving the trivial for a fleeting taste of the sumptuous tradition of Indian classical music, somewhat diluted. The arrival of the forecast showers did little to dampen the crowd's excitement, which grew to hysteria when the big hit Jai Ho ( Victory to You ) was finally unleashed. The music may largely have been trifling, but the message was vital. The violence is reprehensible; the friendship must be lasting.

Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman proved a magnet for Indian and non-Indians alike, who flocked to Parramatta Park to see a Sydney Festival highlight. His show, with its signature intoxicating beats - including Jai Ho, from the film Slumdog Millionaire - featured 40 dancers and musicians in colourful Indian costumes, accompanied by a laser show adding to the vibrant colours. An enthusiastic audience sat on rugs and picnic blankets, grooving and swaying to the music. Rish Chandra, 25, staked his spot at 1pm to ensure he had a good view. Mr Chandra, a fan of the international artist's work since the 1990s, said: It's an honour to see him live. It's really great that Sydney Festival is putting this concert on because it really shows the multicultural diversity of this city. Related Coverage * A.R. This year's Sydney Festival seems likely to be the most successful yet. I couldn't be happier with the way we started the first week - it's gone terrifically well, in terms of grabbing people's attention, festival director Lindy Hume said. More than ever, the festival is showcase for the diverse, exotic and plain unlikely. Another Indian-themed act, The Manganiyar Seduction, features 43 Rajasthani musicians performing a spectacular combination of music and theatre. There's something about the fact that they sing honestly, from the heart, and they love their work, she said.

Rahman thrills masses at Parramatta Park * NEWS * LOCAL NEWS 16 JAN 10 @ 10:38PM BY STEVEN DEARE A.R. Rahman sings during his free concert at Parramatta Park. PICTURE: MELVYN KNIPE RAIN did not spoil the musical parade of Indian superstar A.R. Rahman as he thrilled tens of thousands of people in his concert extravaganza at a packed Parramatta Park. Part of the Sydney Festival, the free concert had everything from Bollywood jive, hip hop-influenced grooves and traditional Indian sounds as Rahman and his entourage of colourful dancers captivated the crowd from start to finish on Saturday night. That finish to the two and a half hour production came in the form of crowd favourite `Jai ho’, which saw fireworks light the sky while concert-goers danced and chanted the chorus. The Slumdog Millionaire composer addressed the crowd before the finale on what he had earlier in the night called ``one of the most historic concerts of my life’’. ``Thank you for being part of change,’’ he said, a reference to his wish to end the attacks against Indian students in Victoria.. ``I want all of you guys staying here to bless the children of India with love.’’ Rahman also asked the crowd to spare a thought for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. ``Life is just like that. Anything can happen,’’ he said. ``So Jai ho, God bless you all..’’ They were words of wisdom to his adoring crowd, mostly expats from the subcontinent who came from across Sydney and interstate for the free concert. The crowd stretched over 500 metres through a tree-lined corridor in the park, many families seated on picnic rugs. Most people stayed to the end of the concert, albeit some with umbrellas. Black clouds loomed overhead and light rain fell a couple of times but few revellers left early. Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh commented on the mammoth crowd in his welcome speech before the concert. ``I’ve never seen so many Indian people here, it reminds me when I was in Calcutta,’’ he told concert-goers. He asked Australians to embrace all people who come to their country, and called Rahman ``the Sachin Tendulkar of music’’. A spokesperson for NSW Police said there had been no reports of major incidents.
[arr] RM reviews VTV music - 3.5/5
http://www.radioandmusic.com/content/reviews/film-music-reviews/vinnaithandi-varuvaya Music: A R Rahman Lyrics: Thamarai Label: Sony Music Rating: 3.5/5 Anticipations have been high for A R Rahman’s music in Gautham Menon’s Vinnaithandi Varuvaya as this is the first Tamil album composed by the maestro after he bagged the Academy awards, Bafta and Golden Globe honours last year. Expectations increase all the more as Thamarai has penned the lyrics for the album. Vinnaithandi Varuvaya is packed with impressive tracks by the acclaimed musician but is dominated by western influences, which might not go down too well with the audiences. But the album is a sure treat for music lovers looking for experimental music. Here’s a walk through the tracks in the album- Mannipaya - Mannipaya is a melodious track with Shreya Ghoshal and Rahman on the mike. Although you are hooked to flawless vocals of the singers, you can’t miss the orchestration which stands out in the track. The perfect blend of music arrangements with the keyboard, piano, flute, chorus and the vocalists would definitely hook music lovers. Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya - The album has a great title track Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya rendered by Karthik. The free flowing guitar in the background blends naturally with the vocals - yet both seem to have their own character. The music and vocals seem to be competing throughout the track, often outdoing each other. Hossana - This track is bound to have a mass appeal with its contemporary arrangements and rap portions rendered by Blaaze. Vijay Prakash is at his best and the track starts on a melodious note with Prakash, enters the rap- hip hop mode with Blaaze and Prakash again brings back the melody bit. Suzzane D’Mello’s humming in the background makes the song even more likable. Kannukkul Kannai - The violin is a prominent instrument in this track dominated by western music influences. Rahman displays his flair for western music with this track sung brilliantly by Naresh Iyer. But it is a mediocre track and nothing about it grips you even after repeated hearings. This is not the track I would look forward to in the album. Aaoromale - Passionate singing by Malayalam music director Alphonse Joseph and amazing guitar play make the song grow on you after the first hearing itself. A Malayalam track with a feel of country music, Aaromale is an experimental track by Rahman. The song has a perfect fusion of western and Indian music with violin interludes along with base instrument - guitar. Alphonse has composed for Malayalam films including Pachamarathanalil, Jalolsavam and is a regular band member of Rex Band, a prolific guitarist and a carnatic classical vocalist. Anbil Avan - Sung by Devan Ekambaram and Chinmayi, Anbil Avan is a peppy song with nothing exceptional. With some spellbound tracks in the album, Anbil Avan falls much below the expectations. Omana pene - Benny Dayal does what he is best at in this rhythmic song. Kalyani Menon’s voice surprises as, just when you conclude that it is a male song, Menon surfaces beautifully. Another surprise in the track is the traditional nadaswaram towards the end which gives an altogether different essence to the track. Experimental in nature, the album Vinnaithandi Varuvaya exudes freshness. My pick in the album includes Hossana which would go well with the audiences, Alphonse Joseph owes Rahman for beautiful composition- Aaoromale and Mannipaya.

When he looked at the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge he was like a child with a new toy. It gave me a lot of pleasure that I met someone who is very humble for his age and for his achievements. On Thursday Mr Viswanathan met the Bollywood idol again, presenting him with a framed memento of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. It was wonderful meeting him [again]. He recollected [who I was] and then he signed an autograph for me. Mr Viswanathan says the concert comes at an important time for Australia and India. We're going to get an effect of harmony, community harmony, which is very much needed in the [recent] tension between India and Australia, he said. A friend of Mr Viswanathan, Neera Srivastava, says Rahman's concert will mix both Indian and Western music. We would think that this concert is going to generate enough interest from the Western people as well. We really look forward to seeing many Australians at the concert as well to see what the Bollywood music is all about, she said. Festival organisers are warning that large crowds are expected. SHOWTIME The event is free. Gates will open at noon, show time 7..30pm. Music videos will continue after the concert. Concert goers are asked to take public transport. No BYO alcohol. [arr] Rediff reviews VTV music - Vintage Rahman
http://movies.rediff.com/report/2010/jan/13/south-tamil-music-review-vinnaithaandi-varuvaaya.htm No other album has raised such high expectations or created quite this much frenzy among eager fans like Escape Artists' Motion Pictures' Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya (Will You Cross the Skies for Me?). The Tamil movie has everything going for it namely Gautam Menon as its director, Academy Award winner A R Rahman [ Images ] as its composer, and lyricists like Thamarai, Kalyani Menon and Kaithapram. With Simbhu and Trisha [ Images ] as the lead pair, VTV has been making headlines ever since it was launched as a touching love story with music set to blitzkrieg everyone's heart. Add to that is the fact this is the composer's return to Tamil after his Oscar success. So, does the collection live up to the hype? Let's find out. A guitar strums lazily, reminding you very faintly of the old Wild West, and then morphs into something that might be an ancient native Indian chant -- that's Aaromale, sung by Alphonse. The lyrics in Malayalam seem to form a neat accompaniment to the general structure of the song. There's a soothing, gentle feel to the number, an experience that lets you sink into it. The song proper starts some time later, with a faint strain of violins somewhere far off. Even as Alphonse's voice rises to higher octaves, the refrain hugs the original depths, supplying a many-layered experience. An intense number, this. You sit blinking when you listen to Anbil Avan as you're transported straight to a church choir until you realize that the song, rendered by Devan Ekambaram and Chinmayi, is actually a conglomerate that describes two kinds of religious weddings. The lyrics are all about eternal bonding, unending love and essentially the basics of wedding vows. It's got a peppy feel, full of happy anticipation, an eagerness to seek out the next heady experience, supplemented by synthesized instrumental arrangements. It seems a little like the Ibiza number -- but you're too carried away by its zeal to notice that until the end. On a half romantic, half mournful note, with a flute interlude begins possibly the most publicized number of the album: Hosanna by Blaaze, Vijay Prakash and Suzanne. The musical arrangement somehow takes you right back to the early days of ARR until you realize which number the refrain, Hosanna, bears a striking resemblance to: Only Time, by Enya. The rap segment closely follows the tune as well; the lyrics celebrate the lover pining away for his beloved until his world shrinks to just her. There's no denying that it's romantic what with church bells pealing, complicated violin arrangements and a chorus which all reach a crescendo in the finale. It's a pleasant listen but still seems inspired. The violin rendition in the first few seconds of Kannukkul Kannai is enticing and the number itself, rendered by Naresh Iyer in a fast- and almost breathless manner that aims to bring the heady feeling of being in love. Aside from the violin segment, though, you feel like this is a musical arrangement you've heard often in Rahman's earlier albums, and faithfully mimicked by others following in his footsteps. In terms of ARR numbers, it's pretty run-of-the-mill. Shreya Goshal's melodious voice begins Mannippaya with anguish, and it morphs gradually into a more gentle melody. Remorse and forgiveness are the prevalent themes of this number, and the soothing tones suit the sentiment, with ARR himself providing the accompaniment. Appealing, yes, but the lyrics have precedence in this song and the tune seems to have been composed to accommodate it. Even the flute segment reminds you of the signature tune of Titanic [ Images ]. The kural couplets that suddenly appear take you by surprise. They're a pleasant listen -- and then it's back to the meandering tune. Kalyani Menon and Benny Dhayal begin Omanappenne, which seems like a fusion between western and classical music with a violin suddenly launching into a classical melody at certain points. And that's the essence of the whole song: a gentle composition which attempts to crossover from one genre to another, while a nadaswaram makes a not unwelcome appearance to add a different flavour to the proceedings. Having said that, we've heard many such numbers from ARR himself, and with more variation. Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, accompanied by guitar strings and rendered by Karthik, comes in a different fashion altogether. It's slow, introspective, and the general tone doesn't seem to care much whether it hits the highs and lows of notes in an approved manner, which is actually a plus. The tune moves from contemplative to contentment to interrogative, and that seems to be the essence of the number itself: all the different emotions encompassed in one question. It isn't possible to toss an opinion of an A R Rahman album based on just one listen. This composer has a talent for coming up with numbers that grow on you. Lyricist

[arr] Decade in Analysis-VII (Glamsham writeup on Rahman)
http://www.glamsham.com/movies/features/10/jan/11-decade-in-analysis-7-011010.asp Decade in Analysis-VII January 11, 2010 4:28:58 PM IST Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network Continuing with our feature decade in analysis, today's column would like to put under spotlight A. R. Rahman, who has literally catapulted the Indian music to an international platform and has opened the door for more Indian music directors to aspire to go international through his music. January is also the month in which Rahman celebrates his birthday, and therefore it is a double whammy to interpret Rahman's rise through the decade. A.R. Rahman: Allah Ka Banda in BANDAGI with music He has only attained 44 years of age but has achieved so much in his field i.e. music that by the time he decides to hang his baton he would create such benchmarks in the field of music that it would be difficult to emulate. Such is his prowess with the western instruments, that TIME magazine had conferred on him the title of Mozart from Madras. He is also one of the rare music directors who have been featured on the cover story of news magazines underlining the fact that indeed he is a master whose feat would be a tough task to emulate. 2009 has been the year that has emerged as triumph of his perseverance to the cause of music. If music is creative presentation of sounds in such a manner that the auditory nerves may be swept of the feet, Rahman has indeed become a wizard of music. The decade that has gone by is indeed a decade in which Rahman experimented with all kinds of sound, and there never was a year in which Rahman's music did not make its presence in an impacted manner. The decade started with LAGAAN where Rahman brought out sounds from the rural hinterland of the country and also created one of the most enduring bhajans in the form of O paalan haare, deconstructing the notion built around Rahman that he was a music director who could bring out forgotten sounds from the Indian musical instruments as well, as he did in this song. In fact the decade began on a classical note for Rahman with LAGAAN and he swept all the awards that year. LAGAAN was followed by SAATHIYA, which again set the imagination of nation on fire with the fusion of Sanskrit shlokas to the thump of nodes of piano. SAATHIYA brought Gulzar for the first time with Rahman and the chemistry that was created between Rahman and Gulzar was the platform indeed that paved the way for Oscars in SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. SAATHIYA also affirmed the reach of Rahman to the youth of the country, as his music for this film attained immense popularity among the youth of the country. Rahman again returned to the folk music of the villages with SWADES followed by WATER consolidating his position as a music director who was constantly on the lookout for innovative sounds to mesmerize the audience and create the impact. Indeed he set the nation on fire once again with RANG DE BASANTI whose popularity was not only relegated to the youth but whole nation was engulfed in its kaleidoscopic colors. Be it Loose control, or Rubaroo or for that matter the pangs of a mother, music of RDB caught the imagination of the country unheard off in the recent memory. One of the specialties of Rahman has been to create music using the water as a source or building his music around the water bodies. One wonders whether Rahman is provided the backdrop against which he has to set the music. He catapulted himself into the imagination of nation with his debut song Dil hi choata sa, in ROZA, which he overhauled with Haaji Ali in FIZA and he again showed his penchant for sounds associated with water in GURU with na na na nana re which fetched him scores of awards once again. Interesting pattern of Rahman's music in the decade has been his flipping between western sounds and returning back to the Indian acoustics in contrasts. So JODHAA AKBAR and JAANE TU YA JAANE NA followed RDB. For Rahman this was a first large scale historical film and his music representing the period of the Mughal era was also responsible for the immense popularity that the film enjoyed all over the country and even outside. Rahman also stepped into the Broadway music when he gave the music for BOMBAY DREAMS. His association with the BOMBAY DREAMS opened up the window for him to tell the world the immensely diversified talent that he was blessed with. Music of DELHI-6 created another milestone for him, as he came up with one of the most exquisite qawallis in the recent times Maula Maula. Genda Phool from the same album was an example of the Indian hip hop set to the tune of classical folk, and while the film was not a big hit, its music gave his fans a choice to relive in the glory of old Delhi. The decade came to an end with a fitting triumphant for him in the form of an Oscar for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. No wonder he has been awarded as the

[arr] Happy Birthday Rahman - Indiaglitz Special
It has 2 articles...read on.. -- http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/hindi/article/53283.html The common man admires him. So is the Prime Minister of the country. Every aspiring filmmaker eagerly looks forward to work with him. So are the veterans of the industry. He is A R Rahman, the pride of India, who is celebrating his birthday today. His journey that started with jingles, bloomed in ‘Roja’, and has now touched millions and millions of hearts courtesy ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. He is the first Indian musician to win the Oscars. But this has not stopped him. For the musician is now looking forward for the Grammys. This is his first birthday after the Oscar triumph. But he is celebrating the day like he always does – quietly. Sources close to him say the Mozart of Madras is busy preparing for the Australian concert, slated for January 16 in Sydney. It was in this day a few years ago Rahman started the KM Music Conservatory, one of the long cherished dreams of him. For him, the instititution is “an attempt to recreate a world-class orchestra for the enjoyment of the people of India.” “Synthesizers and electronic sounds played a significant role in the evolution of music in the 80's and 90's. As this fresh sound captivated listeners, they began to lose appreciation and interest in live classical compositions,” Rahman said at that time and added: “If the trend of listening only to synthesizers and electronic sounds continues, future generations would be deprived of the joy, that is, live classical music.” Rahman's role does not end with the school. The music Messiah is taking with him the message of love wherever he goes. This aptly reflected on the Oscar stage, where he said “I had to choose between love and hate. I chose love and I am here.” And the year ahead is going to be crucial for Rahman. As he needs to meet the world’s expectation, thanks to his phenomenal fame after the Oscars. Apart from international projects, he is having three big releases in his home turf too- ‘Endhiran’, ‘Raavan’ and ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’. “God has given me one skill and I’m very happy with it,” says the musician. “We too a lot, Rahman”, says Team IndiaGlitz and wishes him many more happy returns of the day. AR Rahman has filled his career year with innumerable, memorable, fantastic… (Words are not enough for this humble legend)… a vast musical treasure for all to hear…. From Roja to Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman as set inimitable records, being phenomena in his own way and style. Leave alone being striking, each of his composition are different from the other. It is said that Rahman favours to work on variety. He had stated that he likes working on two styles, say, a Slumdog Millionaire-type- of-film and a Jodha Akbar-type. These are two different styles in cinema and both of them need to be there, said Rahman. The films which carry his songs speak for him, carry his unique trademark. Like, ‘Blue’ that had awesome picturesque fabulous blended with his remarkable notes. Think ‘Taal’, ‘Pukaar’, ‘Lagaan’, ‘Saathiya’, ‘Swades’, ‘Guru’… one can just feel his music creeping in mind – that’s an aura he creates… Ok leave that aside…. What about the universal Airtel song which has made its way even the nook and corner of the remote areas? Or say the current hep anthem “Jai Ho” that made its impact worldwide? [arr] Ebony Ivory (Good one)
http://business.in.com/article/person-of-the-year-09/ebony-ivory/8662/1 Ebony Ivory A.R. Rahman is consumed with passion to bring together Western and Eastern musical forms by Shishir Prasad | Jan 7, 2010 Email | Print | Share | Comment (0) | Text Size A A Danny Boyle almost botched it. The Welsh director had bottled the mad razzle of Mumbai quite brilliantly in Slumdog Millionaire. He just had to cap it well. As Jamal meets Latika at the Churchgate station in a climax that was inevitably Mumbai, everything was perfect – the release of tension, atmosphere of jubilation – except for the sound of joy. “Rahman heard the song that I had put and said ‘Don’t use this song. I have another song for you. Use it’ and I said What!!!” Boyle recalled in an interview to a Web site. Actually, it wasn’t even a song; just a danceable instrumental piece. But he agreed to listen to the song that Allah Rakha Rahman had in mind. Looking back, Jai Ho is what defines the climax. Hell, it is the climax. Critics don’t consider Jai Ho as his best work but they are barking up the tree and missing the woods. The reality is that Jai Ho is important for a variety of reasons that make Rahman one of the most influential musicians on the planet. And most of the reasons are in that song. The song itself can be thought of as a Rahman glide note that joins three worlds: music of the West, East and computer technology. The rousing victory song set in A Minor reminds many people of Mozart’s 40th Symphony but the melodic line of Jai Ho runs closer to the Austrian Legend’s Piano Sonata 8. One is tempted to think of it as a subconscious hat-tip from the Mozart of Madras to the Dear Departed. Image: www.worldlight.in/ T Selvakumar He has won two Academy Awards for Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song in Slumdog Millionaire. Nominated for Grammy. Beyond the hat-tip though, it is Rahman’s interpretation of the euphoric mood of the moment. The song loops in the enthusiasm of disco, rawness of world music, slick synthesizer runs and all of these buoy the soaring vocals. Superb sound engineering is the final touch that creates a song that is as much at home in an Indian music competition as much as it is in an Oscar ceremony. The success of Slumdog may have left everyone surprised but it is the result of a concerted effort. Rahman did the music for a Chinese film Warriors of Heaven and Earth in 2003. Then, he did the musical Bombay Dreams with Andrew Lloyd Webber in 2004. He did the score for Lord of the Rings in 2007 and he did Raga’s Dance for the violinist Vanessa Mae in 2008. In 2009, he did the music for a Hollywood film Couple’s Retreat. If this was merely another Indian composer trying to make it in the West it wouldn’t be a big deal. It is much bigger. Rahman is trying to create sound that fuses the music of East and West. To do this, he has started his own KM music conservatory, a school of music as it were. He also has his own label KM Musiq to produce the sort of music that he thinks should be out there. “I want to think like an entrepreneur not an employee. Attempts to create a synthesis of the music of West and the East were made in the past but did not last because that form wasn’t institutionalised. I want to do that,” says Rahman. The tea leaves augur well. “Rahman has been trying to do this East-West bridge for a very long time. Bombay Dreams was the first time he made such an attempt. If anyone can, he can,” says Atul Churamani, vice president at SaReGaMa. Rahman was destined to cross boundaries. He was a child prodigy. A Tehelka article on him talks about one such instance. When Rahman was a kid, his father took him to a music director called Sudarshan. “I hear your child can play anything. Let’s see if you can play this,” he said and played a challening piece. He then covered the harmonium keys with a veshti and gave it to the child. Rahman played the composition pitch perfect. An overwhelmed Sudarshan embraced the boy. Maybe Rahman could have become a great Carnatic musician, maybe a great western classical virtuoso. A world of possibilities ended when his father passed away and the family went through some very hard times. He had to record music for a fee to help feed his family. He played for television shows. He travelled with different music troupes all over South India. The genius could have remained a journeyman. A scholarship to Trinity College of Music at Oxford in changed everything. In 1987, he returned from Oxford and by 1992, he had stunned the world with the soundtrack of Roja. Roja would define how music composers all over India change their oeuvre. That’s because Rahman revolutionised the way music was composed for Indian films primarily because he understood technology very well. “Earlier, you could record only two or three tracks, essentially streams of music. Only the singer’s voice you could record in

http://www.dnaindia.com/speakup/report_we-wish-you-many-more-jai-ho-ar-rahman_1330980 Mumbai: Appeal transcends national boundaries He is a brilliant music composer. Every time he comes up with different and original tunes which is not easy for any music director or composer. Above all, he has earned unique recognition not only in India but all over the world. This is because he has created a unique style in his composition and singing, which is not so easy. He has a great fan following everywhere. Mostly I like classical songs, but I cannot miss listening to his songs from Dil Se… and Saathiya. He has no parallel even in this day and age. But he is getting younger due to the novelty of his musical compositions and direction. —Manjusha Kulkarni Patil, classical singer Isn’t afraid of experimenting with melody At any given point of time, there will be people who will be successful in their vocation. But many of them will be forgotten, since a newer and talented lot will come in. However, there are a few people who will be remembered even after they are no more, the reason being that they have created milestones in their career. After RD Burman, I think AR Rahman is a musician who changed the structure, sensibility of melody. He is able to do it time and again, because he is not bound by tradition. He follows his instincts and even allows lyricists and singers to follow their impulse. His is different since he isn’t afraid of experimenting.—Javed Akhtar, lyricist Humble demeanour endears him AR Rahman is the only singer-musician who doesn’t require any introduction. Sometimes I don’t know the name of the album or composer, but his voice is distinct. His singing style shows he sings from his heart. All his songs are unforgettable whether it is Roja’s numbers or Dil Se… or Jai Ho… or any other composition. Despite being right up there, he is down-to-earth. I have seen him perform too. I always feel happy when he receives any award and I pray from my heart for his long life and success.—Bhakti Udeshi He’s also made Tamil music popular With his universally appealing tunes, AR Rahman has demolished all conventional rules in Indian film music. If anyone can make a perfect potpourri of the latest dance rhythms, pop, Latin melodies, Western and Indian classical and pepper it all with local folk tunes, it is Rahman. His music transcends all barriers — geographical, religious or linguistic. He has made people accept Tamil music with equal acceptance and made them proudly acknowledge that they love Indian film music.—Parul Singh Originality is his hallmark AR Rahman is an asset to our nation. The music he composes gives a different kind of serenity while listening to it. The music is mesmerising and lyrics are always meaningful. All his compositions are original; he has never plagiarised. Moreover he sings well and it’s very touching to listen to any song which has been sung by him. Moreover I respect him because recently I came to know he respects all religions. It is very rare to come across people like him in the world of cinema.—Pratyasha Malakar People anxiously wait for next album Every music composer has a specific target audience, but it’s not with AR Rahman. Everyone, young or old, loves to listen to his music. He has actually bridged the gap between old and contemporary songs. I like all songs but Roja is my favourite. Rahman is quite different from others since he doesn’t believe in copying. Apart from his music, he is a melodious singer. Vande Mataram sung by him is amazing. People eagerly await the launch of each of Rahman’s albums. This suggests how popular he is. —Manish Chimnani
[arr] Will these 3 Indians win the Grammy?
http://movies.rediff.com/slide-show/2010/jan/05/slide-show-1-three-indians-have-been-nominated-at-the-grammys.htm If 2009 was a significant year for Rahman, what with the music maestro grabbing two Oscars, and collaborating with Pussycat Dolls for another version of Jai Ho, this year's Grammy Awards nomination (in two categories) is, as musician Salim Merchant explains, another feather in his cap. Rahman is nominated in the category of Best Song Written for Motion Picture/Television or Other Visual Media, along with lyricist Gulzar and singer Tanvi Shah for Jai Ho. Rahman is also nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture/Television or Other Visual Media, and will face competition from Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, Darnell Martin's Cadillac Records, HBO's True Blood and Twilight. While experts are already predicting Rahman's win at the function, the music maestro continues to remain humble and down to earth. Every tune that goes out from my studio is special. Jai ho was special too, he says. While Indians are rejoicing at the inclusion of the Indian artistes at the Grammy Awards in LA, musician Shubha Mudgal, in an article, makes an interesting observation: Why is there no separate category for Indian music or even for Asian music, despite its strong and unique presence in the world? Why do we have to be dumped into a category called World Music with the rest of the world?... Why not a new South Asian Grammy, if not an all-Indian Grammy? Going by the growing Indian presence at the Grammys, who knows, maybe the event in January 2010 will be an all-Indian Grammy?

[arr] Rewind '09 - 2009: A milestone year for A R Rahman (Good one..)
http://www.radioandmusic.com/content/year-ender/rewind-09/rewind-09-2009-a-milestone-year-a-r-rahman MUMBAI: As the Mozart of Madras turns 44 on Wednesday, Radioandmusic.com pays tribute to the maestro by tracking his numerous successes of the past year, a year that A R Rahman is unlikely to forget in a hurry. 2009 was when he took the world music stage by storm, gathering up accolades and awards in his fold and taking to the international scene in a big way. After his Oscar win for Danny Doyle's Slumdog Millionaire in February, recognitions, awards, Hollywood projects, and collaborations followed - in the music world, he was the man who had everyone glued to his every note and every move. Radioandmusic.com tracks the genius musician. BAFTA AND GOLDEN GLOBE GETS THE BALL ROLLING A R Rahman becomes the first Indian musician to win the Bafta award (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) for best original score. Resul Pookutty and his team (Glen Freemantle, Richard Pryke, Tom Sayers, Ian Tapp) too won Baftas for Best Sound Editing for Slumdog Millionaire. After Bafta, Rahman eventually goes on to win four prizes at prestigious Golden Globe awards where he bags the Best Original Music Score award for 'Jai Ho'. THE BIG 'O' A month after Rahman wins the Golden Globe award for best music score, he gets nominated for Best Original Score and Best Song (One each for Jai Ho and O Saya) for the Oscars. The nomination also brings international recognition for Veteran lyricist Gulzar, who has penned the lyrics for 'Jai ho' that was nominated for best original song for the 81st Annual Academy Awards. PHILANTHROPHY TOUR KICKSTARTS The first concert of the Jai Ho series is held at Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode, Kerala, on 3 May 2009. Approximately, 50,000 people from all over the country and overseas attend the event. This, and subsequent concerts in Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata concert are not only meant for entertainment, but also help generate funds for socially underprivileged. For 2010, Rahman is scheduled to perform in Middle-east, Singapore and Australia. DOCTOR A R RAHMAN First it was raining awards, now it’s time for degrees and doctorates. Rahman gets picked for an Honorary Degree by Middlesex University, London in July 2009. RAHMAN BLOGS ON MJ’S DEATH June 25 was a day that sent news media into a tizzy as Michael Jackson passes away a month short of his comeback multi millionaire 'This is it' tour. Rahman greives his loss on his blog, (excerpts) I am shocked at the untimely passing away of Michael Jackson, one of the greatest musicians of our time. MJ, for most of our generation, was an icon who made uncompromising music. He pushed the milestone of Pop music to unbelievable levels through the 80s and 90s. I am yet to find an artist with that energy, perfection and vision. I met him personally after the Oscars in Los Angeles and we vibed very well. He said that he loved India and the Indian people. He said he heard good things about me and he was praising the chord progression of Jai Ho's chorus. He was bursting with energy and told me that every dance move he did, came from his soul and did a five second stunning example. It was like a lightning strike. RAHMAN INTRODUCES MJ COURSE In November, it was reported that Rahman had introduced a course that gave music lovers an opportunity to study MJ's music at Rahman's Tamil Nadu based music school - the KM Music Conservatory. This is believed to be Rahman's way of honouring the legendary pop icon. Now, news reports also mention that Rahman is working on new tunes in memory of Jackson that will feature musicians from all over the world. SIGNS EXCLUSIVE DEAL WITH UNIVERSAL After the Oscar win, Rahman signed an exclusive worldwide publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group. According to the deal, large portions of Rahman's catalog as well as new music rights to the 'Slumdog' music were included in the UMPG deal. David Renzer, chairman and CEO of UMPG said that the fact that he is a twice over Oscar winner has really elevated his visibility and notoriety globally. The Rahman deal, Renzer said, “fits the company's strategy as film and television music are one of the key areas that are focused on.” BOLLYWOOD ON HOLD The only scores that Rahman releases in 2009 for Bollywood are Dilli 6 and Blue. While Dilli 6' 'Masakali' becomes a rage, Anthony DSouza's Blue, which boasted a high budget and featured the likes of Kylie Minogue, bombs. Expectations from Blue’s music get phenomenally high after Rahman’s Oscar win, the music however fails to impress. RAHMAN GOES ON A HOLLYWOOD RETREAT Rahman records his score for the ensemble romantic comedy, Couples Retreat. Written by Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn and Dana Fox, the film - directed by Peter Billingsly – the film revolves around four couples who go to an island resort for vacation. While one of the couples is there to work on their marriage, the other three set out to
[arr] Radio Mirchi's Top songs of 2009
Chor Bazaari top song of 2009TNN 4 January 2010, 12:00am IST Text Size: |a href=http://netspiderads2.indiatimes.com/ads.dll/clickthrough?slotid=36257; target=_blankimg src=http://netspiderads2.indiatimes.com/ads.dll/photoserv?slotid=36257; border=0 width=670 height=50 alt=Advertisement/a It’s been a great year for music! Capping the year at pole position on the Radio Mirchi Top 100 Year End Special,is the top song of 2009 Chor Bazaari from Love Aaj Kal — which spent a whopping 25 weeks on the Mirchi Top 20. At a close second, having spent a healthy 34 weeks on the chart, is the inimitable Masakalli from the box office turkey that was Delhi 6, proof that a good tune can stand on its own feet if it connects with the public. SRK’s Haule Haule from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, which spent 40 weeks on the chart, is a justified No. 3. While the shout-along anthem of 2009, Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire, makes it to the No. 4 spot with 40 weeks too on the chart; and Dhan Te Nan from Kaminey, which created a buzz and sustained a 24-week run, ends up at No. 5. For more on this hot list, turn to our music page. Going by the Mirchi Top 20 every week over 2009, it really seems that Delhi 6 was the most popular film with about six entries on the charts. Moreover, it also seems like a good melody has been the common thread running through the songs last year, and it looks like the same will happen this year too. Importantly, the Mirchi countdown is one of the oldest and most respected music charts in the country and is seen as the gold standard for the industry. This countdown represents the musical tastes of the entire country, not just of a single radio channel. Hitmaker Pritam, excited by his lead position on the Radio Mirchi Top 100 Year End Special, said, “The year was exceptionally good for me, my songs from Love Aaj Kal, Tum Mile, Ajab Prem.. and Billu were all loved by listeners. Apart from Chor Bazaari, the Mirchi Top 100 features many of my other songs. It is one of the oldest, most authentic and looked forward to countdowns on radio.” Love Aaj Kal’s director Imtiaz Ali, added, “It’s fantastic to know that Chor Bazaari is the No. 1 song.. You don’t know the popularity of your song until something like this happens.” Known for his nuanced lyrics, Prasoon Joshi, whose Masakalli weighed in at No. 2, remarked, “This is proof of the immense popularity of melodious songs as Radio Mirchi reaches out to the maximum number of listeners all over India.” Sukhwinder Singh (whose Jai Ho has two Grammy nominations) has three songs on the Mirchi Top 100 and said, “Haule Haule is by far the most romantic song I have sung. Jai Ho, too, was very special, it was all about celebration. A.R. Rehman and I have made a winning combination right from our Chaiyya Chaiyya days. But I never expected Dhan Te Nan to become the kind of hit that it did.” Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan is also all praise for this track. “Dhan Te Nan is fit to be a part of the Top 5 songs in the Mirchi Top 100. It took the nation by storm and what a cult song it turned out to be,” he said. The actor’s best buddy Karan Johar said he was “thrilled that songs from Wake Up Sid and Kurbaan are a part of the Mirchi Top 100 countdown. “Shankar Ehsaan Loy have made super music this year,” said the filmmaker. And let’s not forget the upcoming Amit Trivedi who won critical and commercial acclaim for the songs of Dev D and Iktara and his ‘alternative’ sound. As an extension of its dominance in the music space, Radio Mirchi also does the annual ‘Mirchi Music Awards’ which is equivalent to the Indian Grammies and is clearly one of the most coveted music awards in India.. Tune in and watch this space for further announcements. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/music/Chor-Bazaari-top-song-of-2009/articleshow/5407195.cms

[arr] From Melody to Dev D
http://www.hindustantimes.com/From-Melody-to-Dev-D/H1-Article1-492354.aspx Conventional ‘melodies’ were replaced by experimental music, as Bollywood became ‘cool’. 2000 The end of ‘melody’ Nadeem-Shravan had cracked it. The ’90s had belonged to the composer duo, who churned out chartbuster tunes, one album after another. After a brief hiatus, the duo had come back to Bollywood in 2000 with Dhadkan. Almost instantly, the music created new records. But with Taal in the last year, A R Rahman had proved that conventional Bollywood melodies were giving way to a new sound – where experimentation would lead the way. The dawn of music directors like Vishal-Shekhar and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy on the scene, who gave equal importance to music production, as they did to composition, all signified a complete overhaul of ‘conventional’ Bollywood music. 2001 The Bhatt film formula The signs were there, right from the time of Kasoor. A high-pitched romantic number with a catchy hook (‘Kitni bechain ho ke’), a male sad song with deep vocals (‘Mohabbat ho na jaaye’), and a female sad song about unrequited love (‘Zindagi man gaye ho tum’). Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt’s films had worked out a distinct music formula at the time of Kasoor, that they’d replicate every year, in every movie, even if the composer and singers changed. So, in the years that followed, Anu Malik gave a similar sound in Murder, Pritam in Gangster, right up to Toshi-Sharib in Jashn. You could identify a Bhatt-film song from a mile away, but that’s not a bad thing. 2002 Kaanta laga If the Bollywood music industry was ever in peril, it was in 2002, when remixes threatened to replace the ‘mukhadas’ and ‘antaras’ with different variations of the phrase ‘Let’s party’, and some turntable effects thrown in for good measure. Shefali Zariwala became the face ... or.. err.. butt of the remix revolution, when she starred in the music video of Kaanta laga, thong firmly in place. Pristine Hindi songs like Chadhti jawani acquired a new meaning, the moral police had a field day, and DJs minted money with Non-stop remix albums. And we found out that even Bappi Lahiri can be plagiarised, when he sued R ‘n’ B singer, Truth Hurts for remixing his song Kaliyon ka chaman in his single, Addictive! 2003 The Return of R D It had to happen. After RD Burman passed away in 1994, his mad orchestrations, wacky experiments, and penchant for using unusual musical instruments to create songs that broke out of the typical rhythm-based Bollywood routine, could never be recreated by any other composer. A lot of remixes came and went, but the Panchamda sound had been lost forever. Until Jhankaar Beats and Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar came. Vishal-Shekhar’s break out album, Jhankaar Beats was an ode to the legacy of Panchamda, and was rooted in his sound. And Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar went the whole mile, recreating 14 of Burman’s best songs, in the voice of the present generation. The Pancham flavour was back! 2004 Zip, zoom, dhoom Move your body, shake your ass’, did you say? That was the domain of the ‘foreign’ singers, that we caught glimpses of, on late night shows on MTV. Music videos, did you say? Only the Indipop world of Sunita Rao and Baba Sehgal had that. Car music, did you say? Well, unless you call Kanta laga car music... In 2004, Pritam changed all that with Dhoom machale. With Thai singer Tata Young at its helm, the song was singularly responsible for the zipping ‘Hinglish’ songs we hear on every track now, the trend of music videos, and the much-abused phrase, ‘international collaboration’. 2005 Kajra re There’s something about Kajre re (Bunty Aur Babli). Maybe it is the sight of a droolsome Aishwarya Rai performing trademark Bollywood ‘thumkas’, in a ravishing, sexy avatar, that men had so-far only dreamed about. Maybe it is the father-son duo dancing with abandon. Or maybe it is the reinvention of the qawwali by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Gulzar, that helped the song pip Omkara’s Beedi (2006) as the item number of the decade. We think it’s Aishwarya! 2006 The phenomenon called Himesh He came, he sang, he conquered. In 2005, Himesh Reshammiya was unwittingly encouraged to sing title song for hisAashiq Banaya Aapne. The song, which had a ‘sufi flavour’, became a rage across India. And an idea was born – that took shape in the form of a 23-song debut private album, Aap Ka Suroor, by Reshammiya, who exploited his nose to sing, swallowed his tears for beautiful models, who ditched him in music videos, and wore a cap to hide his bald patch. The sale of caps reached an unprecedented high, Reshammiya was signed on for a big-budget movie that would explain ‘why he doesn’t smile in music videos’ and ‘nasal singing’ found a synonym. And a phenomenon was born. 2007 Chak De India Last decade, India never really had a sports movie that set our pulses racing and made us bite our nails in excitement.Lagaan, in 2003, changed that. But though Lagaan became
