I have never ever thought ARR will dance on the stage.
But now that does not seem to be far away at all..
by his next round of tour he might have a personal choreographer
and might stun people..

2010-06-15 Thread arr_raghu
the writer has some good points to mention..
but arr needs to release at least half a dozen of classic albums
before it makes sense to make it truly american show..
but this time i think he just tried to give something different..
it is not like trying to become a pop star or something else..
in the past he has already performed on the stage with all the professional
singers and full scale orchestra..

I completely see your point.. he will definitely do
what you have suggested in the future..many more tours to come.
even we want to see his name to become common on the stands..that will come.
meanwhile it is like arr rejecting typecasting..
it is very similar to he composing for the likes of both
kadal desam and lagaan.

I too agree with this. except CNN and MTV, there were no coverage on
american media except a little foot note that AR Rahman is performing.

Why is it ? the answer is simple.. most of the western audiences haven't
really heard of Rahman yet. Some probably know him as the guy who won the
Oscar. But majority of them haven't really become the fan just yet. That
will only happen if he releases some albums in the US, collaborate with big
stars in the west and do good musical concerts that really represent
rahman.. the kind we see in a Yanni Concert. not the kind that Britney
spears or Madonna does. and I wasn't quiet happy with the way they tried to
replicate a MJ on Rahman. I mean, what is the point ?

His music has lots of class that one would find in a western classical
composistions. instead of trying to make him a pop star, why not try to
showcase what really he is ? he is a composer. his compositions are to be
heard.. but not accompanied with lots of dancers and gimmicks.

I know a lot of people might disagree with me. But, that is just me. :) I
would love to see him perform his song with his singers in a classy
atmosphere than to see acrobatics and dances. There is plenty of that in
 Booollywood.

And so no surprise that the management team behind Rahman's new stage show
would call it Jai Ho 2010: The Journey Home Concert.

After all, the hope was that this concert was going to introduce Rahman in
a big way to mainstream America. That 'journey home' expression comes from
one of the original songs of Rahman's West End and Broadway musical *Bombay
  Dreams*.

I did not understand whether this time the expression 'journey home' was
supposed to represent Rahman's passage back to the US -- now that he
reportedly spends more time in Los Angeles; or was this concert reconnecting
his fans in the Indian Diaspora to their roots by traversing through the
  highlights of his rich career.

Last Friday before the first show started at the Nassau Coliseum in New

conducting our own non-scientific poll of white Caucasian faces in the
crowds that were entering the arena. There may have been more than 15,000
people in the audience, but we counted about 20 white faces and perhaps we
may have missed another 30 to 40.

We posted on Twitter and later during the show other friends texted from

   Guys

Last night, I had been to the Jai Ho show - New York..  Here is a quick
 review..

Prominent Singers were: Hariharan, Benny and Blazee ( I don't remember or I
don't know the others who performed)
Athiradee, Nazare Milana, Taxi Taxi  (slowly transformed after Rahman sung
the initial portion of  Urvashi Urvashi) Dilse re (must see to believe the
crowd's happiness for this song even today after hearing at least 100
times).  Luka Chupi  (Rahman singing with the huge image of Lata
Mangeshkar's earlier performance was a great idea)Benny Dayal and Blazze
looked similar (except Blazee wearing baggie). BTW, Benny danced greatly as
if he is a pro dancer. Ended with Jai Ho
Sivamani was missing but, the guy who took his place (a Chinese or some
Asian) was clearly on par with Sivamani.
Great combination of orchestra and colorful lighting arrangements like one of
the shows in Las VegasBut the connectivity was surely missing for some or
other reasons.   (may be due to the absence of regular performers such as
Sivamani, Sukwinder, Naresh Iyer, Chinmayee and the rest).

However, another great show from Rahman to challenge other kind of shows like
this.  It was clear when the crowd was reluctant from moving out even after
 the show was ended.

[arr] Re: Do Gujarat and Tamil Nadu really need Rahman?

2010-05-17 Thread arr_raghu
First of all not every piece of art has to go churning money.
An incredibly talented ARR can easily present composition as
a gift to the state of gujarath, to the indian navy, to the
tajmahal, and to the state of tamil nadu.
ARR might not capitalize much on these projects but the people
to whom he gift his work will feel exceptionally happy.
probably arr's idea is merely to make them and see them happy.
as a fellow fan, i feel proud that arr is contributing to such events.
it actually enhances his stature and reaps more respect across various
communities.

A R Rahman recently composed theme songs for 2 states – the first was for
Gujarat, scored for Gujarat's Golden Jubilee celebrations and the second was
the theme song composed for World Classical Tamil Conference. Now, what
would be the shelf life of such songs, composed for specific occasions?

In case of Bharatbala's Vande Mataram project, it was meant as, and marketed
as a commercial pop album and hence it worked wonderfully, with phenomenal
shelf-life. But, what do these one-off theme songs give Rahman, who's music
is always expected with feverish perseverance by his fans?

Money? Possibly, but that is the least of Rahman's considerations given his
global standing. An association with the state heads or the cause the theme
songs are supposed to represent? Very possible – since there is
time-based/historical significance to these events, and hence, possibly, the
 songs too.

But really, how often are these songs played? At least in case of the Tamil
World Conference, it is nothing but an ego-massage by the current Chief
Minister of Tamil Nadu and it is sad to see Rahman pandering to such blatant
abuse of power when there are many more worthy causes that are crying for
attention. Tamil Nadu is a state where there seems to be a unofficial diktat
to hold at least one conference/meeting every week with Karunanidhi as chief
guest – it is a cycle actually, since the exclusive TV rights of such weekly
conferences/meetings go to Karunanidhi-owned Kalaignar TV and slots are sold
to sponsors immediately, completing the money circle. But Rahman is from
Tamil Nadu, and needs to act like one, beyond personal beliefs – if that
means doing a theme song for a Tamil World Conference, so be it.

I've nothing personally against the conference and love my mother tongue
quite adequately that I chose Tamil as 2nd language all through my studies,
while my classmates had incredible fun with Sanskrit. But I'm befuddled with
the idea of using a celebrated, globally renowned composer for scoring a
theme song that may never be used or remembered beyond one evening. If this
was a film project, would Rahman agree? Or, would he use his discretion to
see the pointlessness of the exercise and focus on better projects? I cannot
answer that hypothetical question and I suppose neither will Rahman – even
if he has an answer. That is called being politically correct.

The song for Gujarat seems to have slightly better significance – after all,
50 years is not a small milestone – and, roping in a celebrated composer to
mark that occasion with a special song is a great idea. There are murmurs
about Narendra Modi doing this tactically, given his much-maligned past the
composer's religion, but such parochial assumptions insult both the occasion
and the composer, who is known for his religion-agnostic outlook.

The Gujarat song and the Tamil conference theme are predictable to a large
extent – rousing music that builds gradually; assortment of singers and
 state/culture/language-specific instruments used for obvious reasons;
jingoistic lyrics, again, for obvious and rightful reasons – Rahman's fans
are happy that they have something from their idol. But, what exactly are
these theme compositions meant to achieve? And for whom?
I personally believe that these initiatives gain more from Rahman's name
attached to them than Rahman gaining anything from them. That, of course,
does not make it any less important for Rahman to decline such
opportunities, but I really wonder why an incredibly busy composer who has
top-ranked directors and producers waiting in queue outside his house to
sign him for their projects, agree to such one-off efforts that may be used
once in their life time and revered only by fanatic followers? Hell with
being politically correct – at least online.

Kids, here come nursery rhymes with Katrina06 Feb, 2010 10:41 am ISTlIANS
Print  EMail Discuss Share Save CommentText:Children might love this. Here
comes a bunch of English nursery rhymes from Saregama that not only offers
audio-visual content but also features popular actress Katrina Kaif and some
musical magic from Oscar-Grammy winner A.R. Rahman's school.

Music engages the senses and stimulates the whole mind and body. This
venture is a concept that will aim to fulfil this need to make learning
rhymes a fun and engaging experience for the child, said B.R. Vijayalakshmi,
general manager, audio visual media of Saregama.

Nursery rhymes are a time-honoured play-and-learn method of introducing
children to language and rhythm, an engaging way to strengthen and identify,
differentiate and practise the sounds that are the building blocks of
 language, Vijayalakshmi told IANS.

Titled Sunfeast Dream Cream Rhymeskool, the album is slated to hit the
stores in March and Saregama has roped in Katrina to promote it and composer
 Rahman supervise the music.

Adding magic to the mix, Katrina will take the children through the lilting
rhymes in her own inimitable style in the video. Katrina's popularity among
kids and her affable style and persona on screen made her fit for such a
 project, said Vijayalakshmi.

Rahman is the music supervisor for this project. The students at KM Music
Conservatory, a college founded by Rahman, is arranging and composing the
music for this album under the supervision of the music master, she added.

Saregama is concentrating on other languges as well - in the recent past, the
label produced animated Tamil children's folk songs Nila Nila Odiva sung by
Latha Rajnikanth and animated Bengali children's rhymes Aye Re Aye Tiye,
which is a compilation of the traditional and most popular children's rhymes.

Preeti Sagar's Phulwari Bachchon Ki is another animated children's Hindi
 songs title in the pipeline.

Vijayalakshmi said : Saregama believes that learning can be made a lot more
fun and effective through the use of vibrant multimedia, music and dance. To
this effect, the company is launching a series of learning-oriented Home
EduTainment products that will impact the way children learn.

To make the album a hit, Saregama is planning a 360 degree media plan to
promote the product with heavy penetration across metros.

 [image: couples

didn't quite like the vocals in *Sajna* (which I believe is done by Vince
Vaughn, he is supposed to have recorded a song for the movie), mainly due to
the corny lyrics, but Rahman's mesmerizing arrangement is more than enough
to have you hooked to the track. The big surprise comes in the next track.
How often do you get to hear Tamil song playing in a Hollywood soundtrack?
Well here is one for you, Rahman crooning a chirpy *Kuru Kuru* set to a
mildly folksy orchestration. A really addictive track this one, as I am
discovering at this precise moment (thanks to a close friend for deciphering
the lyrics). *Jason and Cynthia Suite* on the other hand begins on a more
solemn note, Rahman employing all his orchestral splendour to a gradual
buildup over three minutes before springing a surprise mode change to a more
folksy segment led by the flute for the next two minutes. *Nana* which comes
next, has a lot of tribal sounding words interspersed with rap in a
carnivalesque track. I couldn't discern Blaaze's voice among the rappers.
And I think the kid's voice belongs to Rahman's son Alim who had reportedly
recorded a song in this movie.
In spite of a slight resemblance to *Jaage Hai*'s orchestral sequence in its
grand opening, *Tour of the Villas* is an absolute treat, an instrumental
and more elaborately orchestrated version of *Sajna*. Strangely enough for a
minute-long segment in between the song goes into a karaoke mode without a
leading tune, just the backing instruments playing on. Of course that takes
no credit off this short and sweet track. *Meeting Marcel*, the next track,
is a spiritual song, albeit arranged in a sinister manner. While the first
half with a folk tinge is dominated by the flute, the latter half taking on
a darker tone belongs to the violins. *Itinerary* is typical background
track material rather than something intended for a CD. It is made up of a
sequence of different tunes which wouldn't make much sense unless listened
to while watching the movie. *Undress* sounds very Indian and very nicely
so, thanks to the extensive use of ghatam, no negative connotation intended
mind you. Lasting just over 1.5 minutes, this track would have been a
perfect fit in a movie like *Lagaan* or *Swades*. It will be interesting to
see how the picturisation of this happens (my interest has nothing to do
with the title I assure you!).
*Sharks* is another mindblowing track albeit a totally classical-oriented
one (*Puriya Dhanasri/Panthuvarali* the raga is I guess). With the violins
playing at a frantic pace to an equally frenzied percussion, this song took
me back to Rahman's classic *Hai Rama* for a moment. *Luau* refers to a
Hawaiian feast. And John O'Brien's sole score for the movie is quite
evocative of the party mood with its very native arrangement. *Salvadore* is
superb fusion, Kailash Kher's well executed Hindustani tarana (similar to
thillana in Carnatic) mixed brilliantly with a Latin/Middle Eastern
instrumentation. *Intervention* is another track marked by its orchestral
opulence, and the combo with Rahman's soulful humming is quite deadly! The
 result, another totally riveting track.
Similar to *Itinerary*, *The Waterfall* also features a collation of varied
tunes which would be better viewed than listened to. Rahman produces an
elegant reprise to *Jason and Cynthia Suite* with *Jason and Cynthia Piano
Theme*, cutting down on the orchestral elements and making it more easy on
the ear. Things are rounded off with another bouncy track, *Animal Spirits*,
which starts off as a spruced up version of *Jason and Cynthia theme* but
then moves on along a different line for about two minutes where things take
a turn, with a revisit to the opening sequence of *Tour of the Villas*.
After a long hiatus post winning the Oscars suddenly there is a deluge of
Rahman songs. While *Blue* was more commercialised and *Passage* at a more
esoteric one, *Couples Retreat* combines a bit of both. Honestly I didn't
expect a Rahman soundtrack to displace *Passage* from the position of his
best soundtrack this year, so soon! And now the million dollar question is,
will the movie turn out to be worth such a brilliant effort. Hope it does.
You can listen to the soundtrack
 herehttp://www.couplesretreatsoundtrack.com/

 Music Aloud's rating – *8.5/10*

Allahabad: The superhit song 'Jai Ho' composed by music director and Academy
Award winner AR Rahman not only captivates music lovers in India, but across
the globe and in US one can hear the popular number being played in shopping
malls and not to mention at the John F Kennedy International Airport also,
said a delighted Vikas Swaroop, author of the book 'Q and A' which inspired
the making of Oscar winning movie Slumdog Millionaire' in an exclusive
interview with TOI after his arrival in the city here on Wednesday.

Holding high praise for the Hollywood film industry for its democratic
character, Swaroop said the scene at Academy Awards Ceremony was entirely
different from Indian Awards Function on account of the fact that once
ushered inside the venue one could freely interact with the likes of Brad
Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston. However, in Bollywood the security
paraphanelia around the stars keep the fans and common man at bay from their
 favourite stars.

As regards 'Slumdog Millionaire' the diplomat turned writer felt that after
Gandhi it is the first film based on an Indian theme which has earned the
accolades of movie lovers in western countries and won Oscars in virtually
all major categories. This is despite the fact that themes of both films were
altogether different. But this cannot deny the credit to Slumdog.. which was
a work of total fiction and its list of high profile admirers include present
US secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Attributing the success of the film to its ability to touch the hearts of

 Our man, Rahman
Musician A.R. Rahman has his own Barmy Army — some 15,000 diehard fans
who follow their idol's every move. Anirban Das Mahapatra meets some
 of them

ALL FOR ONE: Members of the A.R. Rahman fan club are all pepped up
before a concert in Calicut this year
Just in case you thought you knew everything about A.R. Rahman and
were his biggest fan under the sun, here's a reality check. Surely,
you wouldn't know anything about the ad jingles he once composed for
brands ranging from Hero Puch to Leo Coffee, would you? Or are you,
for that matter, aware that he's lending the soundtrack to an IMAX
production titled Heart of India? And have you the distinction of
being physically present at all concerts the music director has had on
 Indian soil till date?

Chances are you haven't. That is what makes people like Gopal
Srinivasan and Vijay Aiyar a special breed — a breed that has been
steadily growing for the past decade or so to now include some 15,000
music-crazed men and women who live, breathe and swing to A.R.
Rahman's magic for every living moment. Welcome to the real A.R.
 Rahman fan club.

It's funny how a simple initiative on our part went such a long way
in bringing Rahman fans together, says Srinivasan, a Hyderabad-based
software professional. All we wanted to do was form a forum where
people could interact with one another and contribute to an
information pool about the life and works of our favourite musician.
But look how far it has come now.

Srinivasan isn't exaggerating. Even as Rahman, who won two Oscars for
the film Slumdog Millionaire, came to Pune last month to perform at a
high-octane concert that marked the beginning of his Jai Ho world
tour, the army of Rahman fans, led by Srinivasan and Aiyar, created a
unique record of attending each of Rahman's concerts ever performed in
India. Some of us have even made it a point to be present at his
 concerts abroad, says Aiyar.

For Srinivasan, who's now at the helm of all activity undertaken by
Rahman's own Barmy Army — a name for English cricket fans who follow
the team — the journey began over 15 years ago. As an impressionable
youth in his late teens, he was completely bowled over by music from
Roja, the 1992 film that made Rahman a household name across India.
The music was so different, so new. It hooked me so badly that I went
mad hunting down every single bit of music that had ever come out of
 Rahman's studio.

Once the Internet arrived in the late 1990s, he logged in only to
receive a pleasant surprise. The net was full of Rahman trivia, much
more than I knew. Clearly, it looked like a nice platform for
exchanging ideas, and I decided to take my hunt online.

Very soon, he had struck an online friendship with Aiyar, a music
promoter and another die-hard Rahman fan. The duo decided to form an
online fan club to create a forum for like-minded individuals to
share thoughts about Rahman, says Aiyar. That was 11 years ago.

By 2000, when I joined, there were some 50 emails being swatted
around daily among members, with crazy details and trivia about
 Rahman's music, says 28-year-old Bangalore-based software engineer
Gomtesh Upadhye. The group, reveals Aiyar, was eventually taken over
by Yahoo!. Recently, the group went on to open a page on Facebook,
where the membership quickly swelled to 3 lakh.

Meanwhile, other bonds were being struck. Sometime in 2003, almost
miraculously, Aiyar boarded a flight to discover Rahman seated beside
him. A personal bond was quickly forged. Rahman was slated to perform
in Bangalore — the city where most of the group's fan base happens to
be. It was a golden opportunity for the group to get involved in a
 more direct way.

We helped out with dealing with sponsors, ticketing and even
backstage work, says Upadhye. There were about 40 of us. We did
everything we could do, for free.

It didn't go unrequited. The group was treated to a personal
interaction with Rahman after the show, an experience most of them
describe as awesome. Says Srinivasan, We learnt that Rahman himself
had been closely following our activity on the Internet. Since then,
he's reciprocated with great warmth to all our activities. It's been a
 very special association.

Rahman eventually invited Srinivasan and Aiyar to handle parts of his
promotional initiatives. Srinivasan is now in charge of all content on
Rahman's official website, while Aiyar manages KM Musiq, Rahman's
music label, apart from doubling as his media coordinator.

After Bangalore, the group has followed Rahman to all his concerts in
India. It's a crazy thing, actually, laughs Upadhye. We get
information about the concerts much before the public does. So we
begin planning our trips and start hunting for air tickets and

Good, but I dont think this is the right time to take any such poll.
People are on high now, excited about ARR, most of them

Of dozens of wonderful composers from history of indian film music, it does not

We definitely want ARR to win such a poll but only after people cool

MUMBAI: After A R Rahman brought home twin Oscars, music labels in
India are leaving no stone unturned to cash in on the Rahman fever.
T-Series has already launched a Rahman compilation last week. Others
like Sony BMG, Saregama are working on similar lines and are planning
early March launches for similar compilations.

T-Series launched a three CD set two days before the Oscar awards
and the album has been well received by music lovers. Says T-Series
president - marketing media publishing (TV) Vinod Bhanushali, “The
album tracks Rahman’s journey from Roja to Slumdog Millionaire as we
own many of his titles like 1947 earth, Nayak, Doli sajake rakhna, and
the recent titles acquired in the last two years- Yuvvraaj, Jaane tu
ya jaane na, Ghajini and Delhi 6.”

The label promoted the set across all television channels; and aired
an interesting 90 second promo across all music and news channels.

Sony BMG, on the other hand, is in talks with major music labels
including Saregama, Times Music, Venus Records etc to acquire music
rights of Rahman’s titles. Sony BMG would be tentatively be
launching a compilation of Rahman’s hits in March.

Sony BMG Marketing director Sanujeet Bhujabal says, “We are
looking at most of his landmark works including songs from his Tamil
soundtracks. Our compilation would include Rahman songs across
Bollywood, Tamil numbers, albums etc. We already have some five to six
Tamil titles which would be a part of the compilation.”

A R Rahman and Sony BMG have been associated with his first album
‘Vande Mataram’. “We have been doing A R Rahman
collections/compilations since the past couple of years for his fans.
We feel it gives a nice platform to showcase AR Rahman’s range of
music to all his fans worldwide,” says Bhujabal.

Venus, which already has three earlier Rahman compilations in the
market would be giving out their title track of ‘Dil se’ to Sony
BMG, which is also in talks with Times Music for the rights of
Rahman’s ‘Jana gana mana’, the only Rahman title with that
label. Sony BMG is also obtaining the rights of ‘Saathiya’ and
‘Sapnay’ from Saregama.

Saregama would also be launching a compilation by 10 March by buying
rights from other music labels like Sony BMG, Venus, Universal etc.

Saregama head, New Media and Publishing Gautam Sarakar denies that
the label is trying to cash in on the slumdog ...

This was the best ever TV programme on ARR I have watched till date.
This was telecasted on Pongal day in 1995. The Programme was titled A
R Rahman oru Kadhiraa illay Pudhiraa?. It was hosted by B.H. Abdul
hameed.

 K. Balachander, Vairamuthu, SPB etc spoke about ARR for about 45
minutes. (Remember that this was during his early days where he has
done only Roja, Pudiya mugam, Thiruda^2, Vandichola chinrasu, Duet,
Kadhalan etc). SPB also told that in Japan they had printed T-shirts
with Chinna Chinna Aasai as the slogan.

ARR was wearing a Green Shirt (which was very common in all of his
interviews during those days) and it was in his Panchathan studio. For
the last 15 minutes of the interview, ARR was asked to compose
something for the Sun TV viewers on occasion of Pongal. It was the
first time (and last time i think) that ARR produced LIVE music .
Couple of Nadaswaram and Thavil people were there in his studio
and ARR gave them the swarams in verbal and asked them to play, and he
recorded them as they played (This was done 2-3 times after some
corrections) . He also gave notations to the Thavil person which was
awesome to watch. In the end, ARR mixed it completely and played it
for the viewers which was a TREAT to watch.

I am searching for the interview (SUN TV has the rights for it). In
those days there was no Internet or Youtube to get the interview next
day. I have recorded the same in a Audio cassette during those days.
Have to search it now.

This one is a real treat for all RAHMANIACS and a must have !!

 Thanks,
 Sriram

ARR gave an interview to SUN TV (i guess during the release of
Bombay) on a Pongal day. At the end of that interview, they asked ARR
to compose a musical bit for the Pongal Occasion. Even though i heard
that only one time, i was really hooked into that great composition by
ARR. I guess the Tavil was played by a famous person (Pazhanichamy? ??).

Just hear the fusion of Nadaswaram and Tavil. Just over a minute..
but... WOW...

I searched for that in youtube and found it Kept on listening it
today for a long long time.
I hope that this has been shared already in the group, but i

An audibly ecstatic and unusually forthcoming A.R. Rahman gives a
quick phone interview in the
middle of a hectic first day back home in Chennai

You have tasted global success before with Bombay Dreams and Lord of
the Rings. How is it
 different with the Oscar?

The Oscar gives you the luxury to do more of your kind of work. It
opens up doors for
collaborations with the best of talent abroad. With the two
statuettes in my hand I feel on par
with the best out there. I am no longer intimidated. In the last two
weeks in LA, that white
 skin complex is gone.

Will we now find you doing more work abroad than in India?

It's a difficult decision to take. I certainly don't want to lose
out on the extraordinary work
a platform like the Oscars will provide in the future.

So what are these extraordinary projects?

There are three or four good projects. You will know more when they
happen.

You had a similar opportunity to shift base when Bombay Dreams
happened...

I didn't have enough exposure then. I was not ready mentally. The
atmosphere was new and I
wasn't comfortable. My body of work was also limited. I have a
better understanding; I am ready
 now.

How do you see your own music change now with the forthcoming
collaborations?

The transition is yet to be seen. In the past two weeks, all I have
given thought to is what
dress to wear, and if I have to go for The Tonight Show or Oprah
Winfrey.

Will we see an amalgamation of the East and the West in your future,
mainstream western work
 abroad?

I hope to keep the momentum going. There's stuff to do with Kylie
Minogue and the Pussycat
 Dolls as of now.

You have hugely influenced the film music scene since Roja...

It was society that wanted this change. The younger people wanted my
kind of music. It was the
 right moment for me.

Which is your own favourite composition?

I can't even remember. All I can recollect is Roja...

I do not know how you will ever miss him.
Please dont try to restrict ARR to tamil..
You can be proud for being from sate language as him
but asking him to do more tamil films is like asking him
to sacrfise his international offers which is not a fair request.
Dont you only think about yourselves, think about ARR too..
He likes to work with various artists, genres, across the borders.
Why cant you and all enjoy his hollywood music equally good?
I do not think anyone in the group will agree to limit ARR
to one language, if you love him, let him win the world.
We need to grow with him not pull him down with us.

I think it belongs to ARR, Gulzar and Sukhwinder in that order.
After ARR's Music, it is the simple and catchy phrase
JaiHo and its strong meaning is the one which made an
impact at Academy Jury. Sukhi sung very well, but really
what the jury is looking is creative music and influencial words.
Without discounting any of Sukhi's talent..

i completely agree. poor Sukhwinder is completely being ignored. come
on people he is the main singer of the winner song, give him some
importance. after ARR composed the song, this is he who rocked it and
made it what it is today. he deserves much. and as i said already, ARR

Telugu Music director Koti mentined following
few new titbits of our ARR in a program to TV9.

 1. In 80s, ARR started wirking with composer duo
Raj-Koti, ARR started with one keyboard and very soon has
 started programming 4 keyboards.
 2. ARR has programmed the complete song Hay Papa from movie
Trinetrudu in 1987, ARR has introduced two african americans
to RAP in this song. Rap is new in those days.
Song's link..he says that the song is still very fresh.
 http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=8YEc6RC0Hl8
 4. ARR gave many different varieties those days, they were
not able to record everything in those days becos of the
 limited recording equipment.
Some of the recordings which turned to be very beautiful were
unfortunately turned down by visionless producers and directors.
ARR used to be very disappointed for rejection of good sound.
 5. ARR has imported Roland Sampler from Singapore in those days
and have used to do the complete background score of a movie
called Marana Sasanam.Koti says that everybody was very impressed
by the very gradness of the sound. Actor Chiranjeevi gave chance to
Koti after hearing the sound in that movie.
 6. ARR has introduced singar Shubha to Koti..ARR has recorded
Shubha's private album Chik Pak chik.
Later ARR has used a similar beat and revolutionary sound
to make his popular song gentleman song Otthagattha. .
He clearly says that ARR did not copy from them or anything.
 7. There is a rare picture of Koti with ARR- picture is not shown.

Song's link..he says that the song is still very fresh.
   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YEc6RC0Hl8
Later ARR has used a similar beat and revolutionary sound
to make his popular song gentleman song Otthagattha..
He clearly says that ARR did not copy from them or anything.
7. There is a rare picture of Koti with ARR- picture is not shown.

I agree too about this change and I'm also glad to see it. I think
AR's PR skills have improved over time. But, a lot of this also

Laughs the soft spoken maestro sarcastically, Our
 communication has
been only through the press. He told the press he wanted to
 sing for
me. I told the press I had composed a song that would suit his
 voice.
To this he replied again through the press that he didn't want
 to sing
for me. We've not met. We haven't exchanged a call or an
   sms.

Rahman finds it strange that after hounding him for so long
 Reshammiya
changed his mind. For the past two years I had been reading
 about
   how
he wanted to sing for me. As a gesture returning his compliment
 I
thought this song would be perfect. I didn't know he would sing
 for me
only when I compose for a film starring him. I don't know if I
 can do
that, say Rahman who turns 41 in January.

2008 was my most productive year in Hindi cinema in the last
 ten
years. I had 7 soundtracks in the North and South. And I'm
 happy with
all of them. God has been kind. I haven't planned anything big
 for
2008. But my music school in Chennai is my biggest dream come
 true.
The whole of 2008 the school gave me a high.

Rahman has just composed his first ever song for an
 international
opera-on-film that's directed by Shekhar Kapoor. I thank
 Shekhar
   for
trusting me with something so unusual. The singer Kavita Baliga
 is a
teacher at my music school. Though she's Indian she comes from
 LA.
It's a great team that we have at music school. Right now I've
 110
students. They come from India, Singapore and Malaysia. I want
 to
cultivate musicians who don't know just about classical music
 but also
new-age sounds. Today's complete musician has to be clued into
 world
music. And that's what we're trying to inculcate at my
   school.

Eventually Rahman wants a music orchestra coming out of his
 school.
And I also want to produce new voices for films.

Rahman regrets the fact that music and harmony have gone out of
 our
music. In the course of time listeners have lost patience with
melody. All the tracks have to be super-racy. As a composer I'd
definitely prefer melody. But if people want to come to movies
 just to
have a good time then I'll give them racy

[arr] Re: Colours CD

2009-02-16 Thread arr_raghu
True that ARR did not have much share in this CD but this
is an attractive and interesting CD for collectors for reasons..
1. Recorded when ARR was Dilip
2. Classical Music Album
3. Along with Stalwarts Zakir Hussain and Vaidhyanathan.

--- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Aakarsh aakarsh...@... wrote:

I first heard this album in 1995. The album was released much earlier.
The album had credits to musicians and keyboards was credited to
Dileep. I just had a hunch (but was not sure) that this Dileep could
be Dileep KUmar who became A.R.Rahman and people were talking about
the score of Bombay. it was just a fleeting thought and i didnt bother
about it much. Later, my hunch proved to be right.

Coming to the album, ARR fans need not expect much Rahman-ism out of
this album. The album showcases the talents of Late Kunnakkudi
Vaidyanathan and Ustad Zakir Hussain primarily and the music
arrangement capabilities of Jeyasekhar, who arranged and conducted the
music. It is a brilliant album for sure. But to be frank, contribution
from Rahman is very minimal and limited to just 1-2 tracks(i think
maximum usage of keyboards was only in 'Evolution' track). Thats
because most of the tracks are pure classical and not fusion. The
fusion, in some Indian classical tracks, is non-electronic and
involves string orchestra playing tunes in western classical style.

Bottomline: Buy it if you like Indian Classical Music, Instrumental
Music, Carnatic Violin-Tabla stuff. If you are strictly looking for
ARR stuff, forget it.

AR Rahman's Delhi 6 music sales not hit by recession Story By:
MANISHA
 PRADHAN SINGH updated on: 07/02/09

MUMBAI: Music composer A R Rahman began the year literally on a high
note!
Post the Golden Globe Awards, followed by the Oscar nominations for
Slumdog
Millionaire, the expectations from him are soaring.

Known for giving soundtracks, which have good production value, his
next
album that is climbing the charts is Delhi 6. The soundtrack of
Delhi 6
 comprises 10 songs sans remixes.

Moreover, according to T-Series, which has the music rights of Delhi
6, the
album has been well received by consumers.

Delhi 6 has been directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, after the cult
classic
film Rang De Basanti. The lyrics have been written by Prasoon Joshi.
Rahman
teams up with Mehra and Joshi once again for Delhi 6 after RDB.

Even though the world is singing praises of Rahman post Golden
Globes, he
has always been recognized for his musical magic back home!
Similarly, each
and every song in Dehli 6 too upholds the high standards Rahman has
set.

T-Series chairman and managing director Bhushan Kumar says, Rahman
has
always given good music and the response to his music has always
been good
as far as sales are concerned. Moreover with the three talents -
Rahman,
Rakeysh Mehra and Prasoon Joshi coming together, the Delhi 6 album
too is
sure to be a big hit.

Though his personal favourites are Masakali and Rehna Tu, Kumar
feels the
album as a whole is great. He says, Despite the recession, where
people
have become very selective about what they buy, we are getting a
superb
response as far as music sales of Delhi 6 are concerned. We are not
feeling
the hit of recession with this album.

T-Series has the rights of some of Rahman's films like Taare Zameen
Par,
Jaane Tu, Yuvvraj, Ghajini, Slumdog Millionaire and Delhi 6.

According to Mehra, Rahman is involved with the film right from the
time the
story is conceived to the final draft. He says, Rahman, Prasoon and
I have
been working on the music since the last three years. In all my
films the
songs are played in the background theyare more like an
interpretation of
the story rather than lip sync, therefore there is nothing like the
song has
to be ready before the shoot. We discuss the story ideas together
and in the
process, Rahman starts forming pictures in his head and he works on
the
concept and the tune. He has a very unique way of working.

 *PEERS TALK*

Speaking to Businessofcinema.com, musician Shankar Mahadevan from
the
Shankar Ehsan Loy team says, Rahman has always given top quality
music and
he always will. The soundtrack of Delhi 6 too is sure to do well.
Post the
Golden Globe and the Oscar nominations the rest of the world has
become more
aware of Indian music and it's sure to have a bigger market abroad.

Music director Sajid, from the Sajid Wajid duo, feels, Expectations
from
Rahman post the awards might have gone up but Rahman's work has
always been
beyond expectations. When we talk about Rahman we talk about
guarantee.
Though there are some music composers like Aadesh Srivastav who are
doing
work for the international market, the singing of Jai Ho! at the
Oscars and
the numerous awards that Rahman has won will definitely make the
international market more aware about the quality and talent in
India.

Director Mehra adds, Rahman has always delivered good music and
brought a
change. In fact he's the change. The demand for the music of Delhi 6
too is
 hot.

 *DELHI 6's MUSIC MANTRA*

With Delhi 6, Rahman offers a wide array of musical genres in a
single album
ranging from devotional, Sufi, classical, rock, romance, folk.
Rahman has
also used more of new-age voices like Mohit Chauhan, Javed Ali and
Benny
 Dayal for this album.

On one hand, the Delhi 6 album has a completely Indian classical
like Bhor
Bhayi sung by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal and on
the other
it has Hey Kaala Bandar, which is somewhat a fun song on the lines
of Masti
Ki Paathshala from Rang de Basanti.

Then there's Genda Phool, which has a folk touch wherein Rehman has
matched
new age with folk music. Speaking to Bussinessofcinema.com, Mehra
says, The
song Genda Phool is a folk song and it was given to us by Raghuveer
Yadav
and Rajat Dholakia gave the additional music for the song.

On the other hand, Dil Gira Dafatan is more western, where Rahman
introduces
a new playback voice - Ash King. According to Mehra, Rahman had
heard him
in London sometime back, so he got him to India to do this song.
Being a
third generation Indian living in London, he could not speak Hindi
so we had
to train him before singing every line. It took us almost 18 days to
