The home to the The Wandering Soul's show Rahmania, Pune witnessed yet
another show but of a different kind and by a different group. only
common thing ? love for ARRahman's melody !

A group called ROOBAROO in Pune took their first step in the world of Rahman
music on 22'nd July by performing ARRahman's choicest songs in front of
select audience. In what way they were different than the TWS Rahmania show ?
well they had exactly 3 guitars and a rhythm-man to accompany 2 lead vocalist
! Call that UNPLUGGED show or Acoustic show, but to me this was a novel
concept showcased by Saurabh Bhalerao who felt the need to get close to the
Rahman melody sans the orchestration and the show simply rocked !

Since there was no pressure on the showcasing minutest details about ARRahman
sound which RAHMANIA team of TWS tries to get closer to, the ROOBAROO team
could experiment a lot with the song selection and presentation and thus
could play some (probably ) un-usual songs like Shauk Hai - Guru, O re
chhori - Lagaan, Luka Chuuppi - RDB, Tu Bin Bataye - RDB and many more
 in a non-stop 2 hour show.

This show is certainly for diehard ARR fans, for you HAVE to know all the
songs they play so that your mind is playing it's own track alongwith the
 unplugged version on stage.

The group comprises of professional singers and instrumentalists and led by
Saurabh and assisted by Rasika and Nishad on Vocals.

It is a welcome effort by Roobaroo and certainly many more such programmes
will be happening in near future and on behalf of all RAHMANIACS of the
World, I wish them best of luck ! May the Rahman Sound be always with
 them

There is something special in the air of Pune (and Mumbai..counting Swapnil
Mistry and his gang ) for sure

[arr] A R Rahman to take part in 'giving week'

2009-08-15 Thread ramakrisha laxmana subramanian siva gopala acharya iyer .aiyooo amma idli wada dosa sambar chatni .
An estimated two crore Indians — celebrities, corporate leaders and common
citizens — are expected to come together and pitch in with anything they can
give back to society as part of a unique 'Joy of Giving Week' scheduled to
begin on September 27.

Organised by Mumbai-based NGO GiveIndia, the event hopes to tug at the
heartstrings of the country, cutting across all divides, and has already got
commitments from a cross-section that includes Sachin Tendulkar, Azim Premji, A
R Rahman, not to mention government ministries and city civic bodies, Mumbai's
dabbawalas and Chennai's auto unions.

People can give something back in any manner they choose fit, and there are no
stipulations, said Venkat Krishnan N, director of GiveIndia. From a
millionaire writing a cheque, to a slumdweller sharing one of his three rotis,
any act of giving is welcome. The aim is to hold it annually in the week of
October 2, with the hope that it continues to grow to become a festival that
all Indians plan for.

Although the event has some parallels such as the Red Rose Day in Britain, the
New York Marathon and the Giving Week in Australia, they are not on the same
national scale as the proposed 'Joy of Giving Week', said Krishnan, an
IIM-Ahmedabad graduate who set up GiveIndia in 2000 to create a giving
culture in India by providing people with opportunities to contribute to good
causes, with high standards of transparency and accountability.

The list of names who have endorsed the event and pledged to contribute reads
like a who's who of the country: sports icons such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul
Dravid, Geet Sethi, Prakash Padukone and P Gopichand; Bollywood and regional
film celebrities such as Farah Khan, Rahul Bose, Madhavan and Nagarjuna;
film-makers Anurag Kashyap, Imitiaz Ali, Nandita Das and Maniratnam; music
maestro A R Rahman, and corporate leaders such as Azim Premji, N R Narayana
Murthy, Deepak Parekh, Adi Godrej and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit has committed full participation and support
from her government, reaching out to all schools in Delhi and promoting the
week through the Bhagidari newsletter, and having 'Joyboxes' in all Delhi
government offices. She has also agreed to provide visibility to the week
through bus shelters and at metro stations.

Sachin Pilot and Ambika Soni have offered Telecom, Information and Broadcasting
support to the week. The mov-ement has also found endorsement from West Bengal
Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the Bangalore and Ahmedabad city corporations and
the Andhra Tourism Board.

Slumdog composer reaches around the world in harmony
Matt Wade Herald Correspondent in New Delhi
 August 11, 2009
INDIA'S Oscar-winning pop icon, the Slumdog Millionaire composer A.R. Rahman,
wants to counter recent attacks on Indian students in Sydney and Melbourne
with a free concert during the Sydney Festival in January.''Considering the
recent hassles that have created a bad vibe I thought this concert would be a
statement of peace,'' he told the Herald yesterday.Rahman said he hoped to
deepen the connection between India and Australia.''I hope it will do what
ever it can to reunite culturally and spiritually,'' he said.Festival
organisers said Rahman suggested a free concert as a demonstration of
cultural diplomacy and a gesture of goodwill. It will be held at Parramatta
 Park on Saturday, January 16.
''This show is very important to me,'' said Rahman, who won two Academy
Awards for composing the soundtrack for the hit movie Slumdog Millionaire.
''I hope it creates a bridge of understanding and love.''A series of attacks
on Indians studying in Australia over the past two months has received
widespread media coverage in India and damaged Australia's reputation as a
 safe destination for students.
''As a musician I believe in peace and I believe in the good nature of
people, so I feel that it was one of my duties to come and perform in what
ever way I could help building a bridge between both countries,'' Rahman
said.He hopes the concert will help break down cultural misunderstandings and
boost the morale of tens of thousands of Indians studying in
Australia.Rahman, 43, is a superstar in India, where film and pop music are
one. His film scores and soundtracks have achieved sales of more than 300
million, making him one of the best-selling recording artists in the
world.Rahman has won 13 Filmfare Awards, four National Film Awards, a BAFTA
Award and a Golden Globe forSlumdog Millionaire.A Time magazine critic dubbed
him the ''the Mozart of Madras''.The film's anthem, Jai Ho, became an
international hit and Rahman promised fans to expect songs from the movie at
the Sydney concert.Rahman's friend, the Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann,
choreographed Rahman's performance of Jai Hoat this year's Oscar
ceremony. The song was used by the Congress Party as part of its triumphant
re-election campaign in May.Rahman has fond memories of playing to packed
crowds in Sydney and Melbourne in 2005.''They were probably some of the best
concerts we have ever done,'' he said. ''I want to re-create that in
Australia this time.''The Premier, Nathan Rees, congratulated Rahman for
''his leadership and goodwill'' in offering to perform at the free
concert.''We all look forward to having him here next year.''

Just came back from an absolutely fabulous Kailasa concert @ Stern

There were close to 8000 people today - probably 50% non-indians and the
 scenes were unbelievable.
Before the concert began though - there was a 30 minute meeting in a house
close to the venue with Kailash Kher and his group members - the first 10
mins were introductions and insight into his music and the host was asking
questions about his music style, life and influences. After that they
allowed the audience to ask questions and I was fortunate enough to not just
 ask 1 but 2 questions.

I asked him who amongst all of the people he has worked with he enjoys the
most - he was actually thrilled with the question and of course (you must
have guessed who it is) - it was *none other than ARR* who he enjoys the
most. He told the audience that he is nervous when he goes to ARR's studio
because there are always surprises as to what ARR wants - he will just let
you sing however u interpret the song first and then put in his bit of
suggestions et al. He went on for probably a minute and half speaking about
ARR. He also enjoys working with Salim-Sulaiman and Vishal Shekhar (one of
the first people he worked with and who gave him a break in this industry).

I also asked him him the news in the media about him singing for Couples
Retreat - he dismissed the Indian media completely and said that he has only
sung 4 lines in one song for ARR and that its completely an ARR album. He
also dismissed having done any work with Eddie Vedder (another rumor on the
block) - there are plans but nothing firm.

Someone else asked him about his favorite singers and surprise surprise - *the
first name was ARR again*. He said that I know lot of people find his voice
unconventional but to him thats ARR's singing his what is from the soul.

I was absolutely thrilled at his responses - managed to get his autograph as
well and wished him more n more songs with ARR :-)

London, June 29 (IANS) Pop legend Michael Jackson, who died Saturday, was
reading poetry by Indian Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore during the last
days of his life, and had commissioned Oscar-winning music maestro A.R..
Rahman to create a unity anthem for his new album.

Rahman got the job after his Academy Award success courtesy Danny Boyle's
multiple Oscar winning underdog drama 'Slumdog Millionaire' early this year.

Jackson's last brushes with Tagore suggest he was developing a special bond
  with India, reports contactmusic. com.

'A.R. Rahman met Michael Jackson after the Oscars in Los Angeles and
Michael asked him to compose a unity anthem for him...Michael' s planned
new album would have had a huge Indian feel to it...Michael was reportedly
working with Adnan Sami, which was to include Indian musical instruments
like the sarangi, tabla, and dholak,' said an insider close to Rahman.

The unity anthem wasn't the first time the pair would have worked together,
as they collaborated earlier on a track titled 'Ekam satyam'.

A source suggested Jackson's brother Jermaine encouraged the King of Pop to
explore Indian music, as 'Jermaine's wife Halima reportedly lived in
Chandigarh in India for some time'.

Jackson was secretly also studying Hinduism in the last years.

'Michael reportedly learned how to meditate and he was a vegetarian. When
he was presented statues of Hindu deities Ganesha and Nataraja, Michael
knew who they were. He was also very anxious to meet Mother Teresa before
her death. He had a great interest in all things India for some time,' said
Rajan Zed, the president of the Universal Society of Hinduism.

JAI HO won coz it's a good song (not extra-ordinary)AND ALSO because it was

Jai Ho was certainly outstanding song compared to others, so awarded the

R Anandh picked up the veena when he was all of seven years old. Later,
when studying to be a mechanical engineer in Roorkee, Anandh learnt to
play the guitar and got into the college band. I wanted to do something
in music, more than being an engineer, he recalls.

And for the last 20 years, he has been composing music for ads.

After his graduation in 1989, Anandh joined Prasad Media as a composer
and stayed there for three years, until the studio caught fire and had
to be shut down. He then started his own home studio called Aqua Regia
-- which is three parts hydrochloric acid and one part nitric acid that
dissolves gold -- with Gopal Rao, whom he met at Prasad Media.

Starting with music for ad films, the duo soon started getting offers
for doing Tamil and Malayalam feature films as well. That's when Shaleen
Sharma, who was Anandh's band member in college, was asked to join the
team.

The trio formed a band called Agosh, with Anandh playing the guitar, Rao
as the lead singer and Sharma at the drums. Agosh released one album,
Paisa, in the early 1990s.

The trio also composed music for the Hindi film, Zor, starring Sushmita
Sen and Sunny Deol. However, they were disappointed by the experience
and decided not to do Hindi feature films again.

The band disintegrated subsequently, but the three members have stayed
in touch. Anandh continued to compose music for ads.

He says that over the years, he has done ads down South and in Mumbai.
He has worked for major brands, such as Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Fanta,
Sprite and Limca.

Anandh says the initial days were difficult, but once the work started
being appreciated, offers started pouring in.

Another development that facilitated the entry of new talent in the
music industry was A R Rahman -- who, incidentally, was Anandh's
classmate in school -- moving into feature films. Rahman used to
dominate the ad music business, and it was difficult for youngsters to
showcase their work in the industry.

Anandh, a true-blue Chennai boy, would have remained so, had it not been
for the opportunity of doing a project in Mumbai towards the end of
2005. He had come to Mumbai for a day, and the same day, he got a call
from another client who wanted Anandh to stay back for a couple of days
and compose the music for an ad.

Soon, another call followed and he had to extend his stay for a week.
Bored of staying in the hotel, Anandh moved into the fully-furnished
house of one of his relatives. Within two weeks, he brought his wife and
car to Mumbai. And stayed on.

LOS ANGELES †Michael Jackson, the sensationally gifted
child star who rose to become the King of Pop
and the biggest celebrity in the world only to fall from his throne in
a freakish series of scandals, died Thursday. He was 50. Jackson died
at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. Ed Winter, the assistant chief coroner
for Los Angeles County, confirmed his office had been notified of the death
 and would handle the investigation.
The circumstances of Jackson's death were not immediately
clear. Jackson was not breathing when Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics
responded to a call at his Los Angeles home about 12:30 p.m., Capt. Steve
Ruda told the Los Angeles Times. The paramedics performed CPR and took him to
the hospital, Ruda told the newspaper.
 Jackson's
death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical
decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier
all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered
the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.
His 1982 album Thriller †which included the blockbuster
hits Beat It, Billie Jean and Thriller †is the best-selling album of
all time, with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.
The public first knew him in the late 1960s, when as a boy he
was the precocious, spinning lead singer of the Jackson 5, the music group he
formed with his four older brothers. Among their No. 1 hits were I Want You
Back, ABC, and I'll Be There.
He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation,
known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves
and his high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters. His
single sequined glove, tight, military-style jacket and aviator
sunglasses were trademarks second only to his ever-changing, surgically
 altered appearance.
For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a
young age, I just don't have the words, said Quincy Jones,
who produced Thriller. He was the consummate entertainer and his
contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I've lost
my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him.
Jackson ranked alongside Elvis Presley and the Beatles
as the biggest pop sensations of all time. He united two of music's
biggest names when he was briefly married to Presley's daughter, Lisa
Marie, and Jackson's death immediately evoked that of Presley himself,
who died at age 42 in 1977.
 As years went by,
Jackson became an increasingly freakish figure †a middle-aged
man-child weirdly out of touch with grown-up life. His skin became
lighter, his nose narrower, and he spoke in a breathy, girlish voice.
He surrounded himself with children at his Neverland ranch, often wore a germ
mask while traveling and kept a pet chimpanzee named Bubbles as one of his
 closest companions.
 It
seemed to me that his internal essence was at war with the norms of the
world. It's as if he was trying to defy gravity, said Michael Levine,
a Hollywood publicist who represented Jackson in the early 1990s. He
called Jackson a disciple of P.T. Barnum and said the star appeared
fragile at the time but was much more cunning and shrewd about the
 industry than anyone knew.
Jackson caused a furor in 2002 when he playfully dangled his
infant son, Prince Michael II, over a hotel balcony in Berlin while a throng
 of fans watched from below.
 In
2005, he was cleared of charges he molested a 13-year-old cancer
survivor at Neverland in 2003. He had been accused of plying the boy
with alcohol and groping him, and of engaging in strange and
 inappropriate behavior with other children.
 The
case followed years of rumors about Jackson and young boys. In a TV
documentary, he had acknowledged sharing his bed with children, a
practice he described as sweet and not at all sexual.
 Despite
the acquittal, the lurid allegations that came out in court took a
fearsome toll on his career and image, and he fell into serious
 financial trouble.
 Jackson was preparing for
what was to be his greatest comeback: He was scheduled for an
unprecedented 50 shows at a London arena, with the first set for July
 13. He was in rehearsals in Los Angeles for the concert, an extravaganza that
was to capture the classic Jackson magic: showstopping

 Our man, Rahman
Musician A.R. Rahman has his own Barmy Army — some 15,000 diehard fans
who follow their idol's every move. Anirban Das Mahapatra meets some
 of them

ALL FOR ONE: Members of the A.R. Rahman fan club are all pepped up
before a concert in Calicut this year
Just in case you thought you knew everything about A.R. Rahman and
were his biggest fan under the sun, here's a reality check. Surely,
you wouldn't know anything about the ad jingles he once composed for
brands ranging from Hero Puch to Leo Coffee, would you? Or are you,
for that matter, aware that he's lending the soundtrack to an IMAX
production titled Heart of India? And have you the distinction of
being physically present at all concerts the music director has had on
 Indian soil till date?

Chances are you haven't. That is what makes people like Gopal
Srinivasan and Vijay Aiyar a special breed — a breed that has been
steadily growing for the past decade or so to now include some 15,000
music-crazed men and women who live, breathe and swing to A.R.
Rahman's magic for every living moment. Welcome to the real A.R.
 Rahman fan club.

It's funny how a simple initiative on our part went such a long way
in bringing Rahman fans together, says Srinivasan, a Hyderabad-based
software professional. All we wanted to do was form a forum where
people could interact with one another and contribute to an
information pool about the life and works of our favourite musician.
But look how far it has come now.

Srinivasan isn't exaggerating. Even as Rahman, who won two Oscars for
the film Slumdog Millionaire, came to Pune last month to perform at a
high-octane concert that marked the beginning of his Jai Ho world
tour, the army of Rahman fans, led by Srinivasan and Aiyar, created a
unique record of attending each of Rahman's concerts ever performed in
India. Some of us have even made it a point to be present at his
 concerts abroad, says Aiyar.

For Srinivasan, who's now at the helm of all activity undertaken by
Rahman's own Barmy Army — a name for English cricket fans who follow
the team — the journey began over 15 years ago. As an impressionable
youth in his late teens, he was completely bowled over by music from
Roja, the 1992 film that made Rahman a household name across India.
The music was so different, so new. It hooked me so badly that I went
mad hunting down every single bit of music that had ever come out of
 Rahman's studio.

Once the Internet arrived in the late 1990s, he logged in only to
receive a pleasant surprise. The net was full of Rahman trivia, much
more than I knew. Clearly, it looked like a nice platform for
exchanging ideas, and I decided to take my hunt online.

Very soon, he had struck an online friendship with Aiyar, a music
promoter and another die-hard Rahman fan. The duo decided to form an
online fan club to create a forum for like-minded individuals to
share thoughts about Rahman, says Aiyar. That was 11 years ago.

By 2000, when I joined, there were some 50 emails being swatted
around daily among members, with crazy details and trivia about
 Rahman's music, says 28-year-old Bangalore-based software engineer
Gomtesh Upadhye. The group, reveals Aiyar, was eventually taken over
by Yahoo!. Recently, the group went on to open a page on Facebook,
where the membership quickly swelled to 3 lakh.

Meanwhile, other bonds were being struck. Sometime in 2003, almost
miraculously, Aiyar boarded a flight to discover Rahman seated beside
him. A personal bond was quickly forged. Rahman was slated to perform
in Bangalore — the city where most of the group's fan base happens to
be. It was a golden opportunity for the group to get involved in a
 more direct way.

We helped out with dealing with sponsors, ticketing and even
backstage work, says Upadhye. There were about 40 of us. We did
everything we could do, for free.

It didn't go unrequited. The group was treated to a personal
interaction with Rahman after the show, an experience most of them
describe as awesome. Says Srinivasan, We learnt that Rahman himself
had been closely following our activity on the Internet. Since then,
he's reciprocated with great warmth to all our activities. It's been a
 very special association.

Rahman eventually invited Srinivasan and Aiyar to handle parts of his
promotional initiatives. Srinivasan is now in charge of all content on
Rahman's official website, while Aiyar manages KM Musiq, Rahman's
music label, apart from doubling as his media coordinator.

After Bangalore, the group has followed Rahman to all his concerts in
India. It's a crazy thing, actually, laughs Upadhye. We get
information about the concerts much before the public does. So we
begin planning our trips and start hunting for air tickets and

A 79-year-old plastic surgeon and a charitable hospital in Kerala have managed
to revive a 15-year-old's dream of singing.

Mumbai-based Jayanth Pawar idolises A R Rahman and dreams of emulating him. He
plays the keyboard, but because of a cleft lip and palate problem he could not
sing like idol. The boy had always wanted to sing, but because of his
deformity, the sound would come out through his nose, said Fr Dr Francis
Alapatt, director and CEO, Jubilee Mission Medical College Hospital in Thrissur.

Jayanth, who lives with his family at Barve Nagar in Ghatkopar, was born with
these impairments and also suffers from blindness. He studies at Happy Home and
School for the Blind at Worli. It was in school that he learnt how to play the
keyboard. The school's director Meher Banaji said though Jayanth plays for the
school choir he always wanted to sing.

The Class IX student underwent surgery in Mumbai some years ago, but the cleft
problem was not solved completely. His lucky break came when the school
referred him to the Thrissur hospital, where he underwent cleft lip and palate
correction surgery on June 9 – which costs between Rs 15,000 and Rs 30,000.
However, in Thrissur he was not charged for the treatment.

Dr Alapatt said after the operation Jayanth's singing has become better. He is
now one important step closer to fulfilling his dream of becoming a popular
musician like the double Oscar-winning maestro. However, Dr Adenwalla said
nothing can be done about Jayanth's eye sight, as his optic nerve is
permanently damaged.

Having recovered from the operation the boy, whose father Jayaram works at a
jewellery shop in Mumbai, gave a performance in the out-patient wing of the
plastic surgery department before being discharged from the hospital.

What is a cleft?

A cleft is a fissure or opening. It is the non-fusion of the body's natural
structures that form before birth. Clefts can affect parts of the face, such as
the lips, eyes, ears, nose, cheeks and forehead

Back in the early eightiees, most Hindi film fans had heard of only three
male names from the South - actor Kamal Haasan, music director Ilayaraja and
singer S.P. Balasubramanium. Of course the ladies scene has always been
dominated by actresses from dowm south including the latest dusky beauties
Deepika, Genelia and Asin! But come 90s and the name of whiz kid A. R.
Rahman was heard all over, and he burst into the Hindi film scene with his
superhit dubbed songs for films like Mani Ratman's ROJA and BOMBAY. However,
it was Ramgopal Varma's Aamir Khan-Urmila Matondkar starrer RANGEELA that
was Rahman's first out and out Hindi film album, and the rest as they say is
 history.

The Beethoven of the East, Oscar winner Rahman is now amongst the top league
of music directors in the music industry having worked with the likes of
Mani Ratnam, Subhash Ghai, Rakeysh Mehra, Ashutosh Gowariker and many more.
His albums sell like hot cakes and any offering from the musical genius is a
cause of celebration amongst his countless fans.

So, what is it that despite not being very conversant with the Hindi
language, his music is such a big hit in the Hindi belt? Well, we posed the
question to the master; he had a very profound answer. Rahman said, ''I am
an Indian and Hindustani music lies embedded in my heart and soul and this
music can be classical, Punjabi, 'sufi', Tamil or any other language.'' He
further added, ''I am not a South Indian or North Indian, I am just an
 Indian.''

Well, great thoughts from the great master craftsman! Here's looking forward
 to his next album!

  Translation:
It was a fine Sunday morning, when I got a call from my friend,
cinematographer Rajeev Menon, asking if we can meet!

The meeting happened at 5 pm that day. I was then the sub editor of India
Today, and was handling movies section too. Those days, Rajeev was working
more on Ad films, than for movies. He told me about a youngster who was
composing for his ad films - His name is Dileep. He has tremendous music
sense. He's extremely talented in playing and handling all modern
instruments. Moreover, Mani sir has signed him on for his next movie, after
listening to some of his jingles.

Wow.. thats something new, I thought, and collected a pic of Dileep shot
by Rajeev and his phone number from Rajeev. Next day, I called up Dileep and
he answered. I introduced myself and asked for a meeting with him. He
immediately refused saying No sir... No Interviews now! Mani sir has asked
me not to speak anything about the project!

I retorted - You dont have to speak about the movie; speak about you! I
would be pleased if India Today publishes details about the new music
director who is Mani Ratnam's new find.
I also told him that I'd already collected his photo from Rajeev Menon.
Finally, later acceded to my request!

The meeting happened at 4 pm. He was not a school kid. He was not yet a
college student. He seemed to be just in that transition phase, with a shy
smile on his face! His mom and sister were with him. His mom offered me cake
and savouries they had purchased from the neighbourhood bakery, for me.
  Coffee followed.

Then, we started talking. He told me a lot - about his father RK Shekar,
about how music became his full-time job after his father's death, about the
family background, about the conversion to islam, about his name change! He
mentioned that the Mani film was a God-given gift for him. He conversed with
him as though we're very close friends for a long time! He took me to his
studio and played 2 songs from his new film.

One of those songs was Chinna Chinna Aasai. After listening to it, I
requested Rahman to play it once more. He was overjoyed and played it again.
Just this one song is enough to take you to heights of fame, I told him
and wished him all luck. Other their Mani sir, others connected with the
film hadn't listened to the songs. I played it just for you. Your words are
very encouraging, he said and thanked me. When I was leaving, he came out
till his front gate and bid farewell to me.

One week later, Rahman's mom called me - When can we see my son's photo in
the magazine, dear brother? I could sense the eagerness and excitement in
  her voice.
It will hit the stands in 2 days, mother. I'll come and give a few copies
to you, even before that, I told her.

En-route to my house from office, I visited Rahman's house with 5 copies of
India Today, and gave it to them. The images of the proud mother and sister,
smiling and sharing their happiness on seeing Rahman's photo in the
magazine, still remains fresh in my memories. But, Rahman took this big news
in a calm and composed manner. With a smile, he thanked me. His humbleness
was there with him right from that time.

After the release of Roja, there was no magazine which didnt feature
Rahman's photo. After that, I met him a few more times as a reporter. Much
to the envy of other reporters, he would approach me personally and talk to
me like a friend. Once, in a press meet, he openly said He's the first
person to interview me How can I not be close to him?. He hasn't yet
  lost that closeness to me.

8 years later, I'd moved from the press and started working for TV and
movies. I wanted to produce a special program for Sun TV for Tamil New Years
day, in association with my friend Balakrishnan. That program was - Special
  interview with Isai Puyal A.R.Rahman.

Rahman had started rocking both the Hindi and Tamil film industry by then,
  and was very busy! It

A R Rahman, as you didn't know him

The struggles and celebrations of A R Rahman's life will be documented in his
first ever biography, titled A R Rahman: The Musical Storm, which releases
June 10. It has been penned by Chennai-based Kamini Mathai, who has worked in
newspapers like Indian Express and The Times of India. This is Mathai's first
 book.

The 32-year-old tells Patcy N how she got the shy Rahman to open up to her,
 and reveal himself.

How did you decide on writing about Rahman?

I had no plans of writing a book. Penguin Books India contacted me in 2003
and commissioned me to write this book. Actually, they were looking out for
people to write the book on Rahman. They had short-listed some journalists; I
was among them. They had seen my articles in the Indian Express. Christin
Sabraini, from Penguin, asked me to give her a brief, and how I would go
about it. I did, and was selected.

How did you go about it?

I read up as much as possible on Rahman. I read whatever material I could get
on him, so that I would know where the biography would start from. I jotted
down names mentioned by him in his interviews, like Sudarshan master [music
director], M K Arjunan master [music director, and his father R K Shekhar's
colleague], L Vaidyanathan [music director] and Thomas Isaac Kathukapli [ad
filmmaker, who composes music as well]. I started tracing these people and
found managed to talk to most of them. I also spoke to people who knew his
 father.

I bought Rahman's music as well.

What was the toughest part of the biography?

Rahman's past -- his childhood and growing up years. Getting details on his
father was difficult. But as I met more and more people, I started getting
 the details I needed.

'Rahman wants us to call it an unauthorised biography'

How much time did Rahman give you?

It's very difficult to meet Rahman, so I would keep waiting at his studio. I
got to know a lot of people while waiting for him, so my research continued.
I met him about three-four times. With Rahman, when you interview him, you
have to be very specific of what you're asking him

Rahman is such a shy person. Was he okay with the okay of his biography being
 written?
He wants us to call it an unauthorised biography although he knew I was
writing a book on him and meeting people for it.

He does not open up. You have to try hard. But suddenly, Rahman opens up and
starts talking, and then all of a sudden, restricts himself from saying more.
But the times when he did open up, he would tell me good stories. Like he
said, as Dileep, he was a big failure. Whatever he did before he embraced
Islam failed. For instance, he did badly in school, his father died when he
was nine and he had to drop out of school, he had to work from a young age
even though he liked to play, his music bands flopped, his music albums
 flopped

How much time did it take you to write this book?

The process of writing the book started in 2003. It took me 10-11 months just
to be able to meet Rahman and tell him that I was writing a biography on him.
I met him next after six-seven months. In-between, I had a baby so the
 research took longer.

I made three drafts of the book, and finally sent the fourth to Penguin.

'Rahman said I can write about his music and his life but not about his wife
 and children'

Did you get to meet his family?

He made his mother available to me. But he made it clear that I should not
write about his children. He doesn't want his children to be exposed to
anything. He did not allow me to meet his wife either.

He said I can write about his music and his life but not about his wife and
children. He asked me to respect his privacy. I saw them around in the studio.

I have written stories about his wife and children, as told to me by the
people who worked with Rahman. But the book is mostly about Rahman and how he
 came to be.

What did Rahman's mother have to say?

His mother is free and open. She gave me nice information about Rahman's
childhood, about the family embracing Islam, Rahman's spiritual guru, his
father's illness and how they did not have money when he died, as he was the
 only breadwinner

When Rahman's father died, Rahman had to work. Rahman was a session musician,
who played instruments for music composers and got paid by the day. So he
would leave home early in the morning for the studio and return late at
 night. He had

Every day, there is some news about A.R. Rahman, also known as the Mozart of
Madras!. The noted composer seems to be making waves internationally and has
to be even more careful while choosing the right projects.

Rahman has scaled new heights after winning the Oscars, which made Indians
proud the world over. The musician has been receiving offers from several
quarters and across languages. He is also expected to compose music for many
 Hollywood flicks soon.

The American media has woken up to his glory and his name has appeared in
every newspaper. With Rahman becoming so popular, Oprah Winfrey, who is
famous for her talk shows, has decided to feature him in her popular
televison show. The American celebrity is expected to visit India soon, and
Rahman might accompany her to give a glimpse of India's richness!

The only other Indian celebrity Oprah Winfrey has featured is Aishwarya Rai.
Rahman will be the second Indian celebrity to appear in her talk show.

New Delhi, May 21 : Oscar winner A R Rahman, who enchanted the

 The five minute

Rahman praises the strength and valour of the border force.

 The
credit for the song goes to Meghalaya Governor R S Mooshahary who is a

who composed the song without charging any money for it, BSF Director
General M L Kumawat told PTI on the sidelines of a function here during
which the song was played for the public for the first time.

 The
song, which also captures the emotional tribulations of a jawan
guarding the border while leaving his family behind, comes with a video
showing the BSF men in action along the border, undergoing training and
the famous 'change of guard' ceremony at the Wagah border.

 The
song and the video capture the true spirit of the force. Rahman has
also promised to come and spend time with our men to boost their
 morale, Kumawat said.

 ask him questions too !

Ah ! What a man ! What a Man ! WHAT A MAN ! So simple, so quiet, so down to
earth ! Every moment I watched him, was a learning experience.

 Time 11 PM yesterday - Got a call from a very dear friend . I couldn't sleep
whole night. Just the feeling that tomorrow I will be seeing him for the
 first time kept me awake.

Time 10 AM today - The call which was to get the doors opened, did not

event. He and his support staff gave me blanket cheque to get as many fans as
 possible...

Time 1030 to 1530 today - Phone battery ran down 5 times, so many calls made
to all known fans, so many sms-es done... for many, it was a shock of life to
know that Rahman would be visiting city. Whosoever could bunk college /
 office came to the venue.

Time 5 PM till 7PM today - MIT college students and other fans had started
arriving since 430 PM. Pune does not believe in crowding the place from
morning, so what was virtually clear space at 430, by 530 the place was
decently full, mostly the students. There was lot of entertainment with all
odd instructions belted out by the organisers and crowd controlling team.
There was a band playing MILITARY MUSIC ! Whose crazy idea was that ?
 Still Full to fun !

Time 540PM - Suddenly police started running here and there... A black
Mercedes came at 200kph and out came our GURUJI ! AR RAHMAN, dressed in a
black blazer looked so cool that it was hard to believe that this fellow had
done a 15 hours nonstop flight from US ! From where does he get the energy ?

The crowd goes out of control everybody starts clapping and yelling
flashbulbs go wild.the crowd goes even wilder. He walks towards us as
if he is taking an evening stroll in a park.. no hurry whatsoever.

Rahman goes inside and then after few minutes comes out in an ULTIMATE
Maharashtrian headgear called PHETA ! He looked dashing at the same time CUTE
 !

The organisers are at it again trying to push the crowd so that Rahman can
reach the flag post and pull the chord to unfurl the JAI HO flag. He does it

Swapnil and some other local Mumbai fans used to meet there regularly and we
had great time at ARR meets. For a few hours we would be talking, listening,
watching and breathing everything-ARR. I got only fonder of ARR through these
meets. I've been a fan since Roja days - after being to these meets I
realized I was only one of the many ARR fan-atics out there.

I thought it would be great to have something similar in the NY/NJ area!!

So, come on over -- if you're a fan from ARR's vintage-music years or have
just discovered his music through some his recent hits. With last year's
terrific music like Jodhaa Akbar, Ghaniji, Slumdog, Elizabeth, etc. - we'll
have lot of material to listen to, discuss, critique, etc. We'll listen to
some new/old music, discuss his new/old work, etc.

see all this in person and used to weep and cry very badly. We have suffered

We took our father to a lot many places and tried different types of

very badly with his stomach ache. Finally, someone told us that somebody had
 kept something bad somewhere.

We found out where that someone had kept that bad item. In front of our

Abbas Tyrewala's Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na bestowed Genelia D'Souza with all that
an actress could wish for. But, that's not all; he will soon be making a
sequel to the teenybopper film. Giving us a peak into the film, Abbas
Tyrewala says, It starts with Jai (Imran Khan) and Aditi (Genelia D'Souza)
having problems in their marriage. They are on the verge of a divorce after
Jai ends up drunk and having a one-night-stand.

This validates Genelia's participation in the sequel and she is on cloud
nine. A film like Jaane Tu doesn't happen every day, says Genelia, It fell
into my lap by chance. All of us in Jaane Tu have got busy. Everyone went
their way. I've been working round the clock on my films and endorsements.
But whenever I meet Abbas or Imran, we feel the same warmth that we felt
during the making of the film. It would be fun for the whole team to be
 reunited.

However, Jaane Tu's other gifted supporting players who played Imran and
Genelia's college friends haven't found a single significant offer in
Bollywood. But Genelia is past all this. I haven't been sitting at home
waiting for the sequel to happen. Now, I have almost finished two other
films: Its My Life with Harman Baweja and Life Partner opposite Fardeen Khan.
Also, I've just begun shooting for David Dhawan's Hook Ya Crook where I play
a lawyer, which is the only prominent female character in the film.

Abbas has said that it was a conscious decision to not make Jaane Tu's sequel
immediately because he wanted to let the characters mature in his mind. He
will focus his attention on the sequel after finishing 1-800-Love, which
features his wife Pakhi and John Abraham and will go on the floors next month
 in London.

millions of Indians more musical, a special award has been instituted for the
Bollywood music industry by Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM. The first Tata Indicom
Mirchi Music Awards were announced at Hotel Taj Lands End in Bandra on
 Saturday evening.

Holding the golden trophy fashioned as female figurine, host Shaan emerged
singing from amidst the audience, encouraged by co-host Tulip Joshi. As was
the case at the Filmfare Awards, A R Rahman and Jodhaa Akbar swept the
honours here too, bagging song of the year for Jashn-e-bahara and best male
vocalist for Javed Ali for the same song.

Bela Shende, who was Shreya Ghoshal's rival at a talent hunt many years ago,
came out tops with Manmohana for Jodhaa Akbar. A R Rahman struck gold with
album of the year for Jaane Tu... and best music director for Kabhi Kabhi
Aditi. Aptly, the lifetime achievement award was presented to singer Lata
Mangeshkar for never having hit a wrong note in her life, as Bade Ghulam Ali
 Khan once said.

Interestingly, as many newcomers took the stage as veteran names in the
business. Upcoming talents Dominique Cerejo and Benny Dayal shared space with
veteran saxophonist and music arranger Manohari Singh. A spectacular lineup
of performances by Bipasha Basu, Shreya Ghoshal, Genelia DSouza and Kunal
Ganjawala punctuated the ceremony. In a spontaneous competition for music
directors present at the awards, Javed Akhtar gave them an 'unmusical' verse
to compose on IPL and the general elections.

Weeks before the actual awards ceremony, the jury met to deliberate the list
of nominations and then the winners. Jury chairman Javed Akhtar along with
Prasoon Joshi, Louis Banks, Shankar Mahadevan, Annu Malik, Lalit Pandit,
Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sonu Nigam, Kailash Kher, Suresh Wadkar, Sadhana
Sargam, Kunal Kohli, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Ramesh Sippy listened to
400-500 songs as they shortlisted the nominees to the 17 categories.

One of the award categories was branded the Tata Indicom Talent Hunt for
which aspiring singers from 23 locations in India had been invited to
compete. Contestwinner Prachi Shah from Ahmedabad performed at Saturday's
 awards ceremony.

The title sponsor of the Mirchi Music Awards is Tata Indicom. The channel

  Spontaneous Recording with ARR
  Category: Music
Wed Oct 22, 2008 Slum Dog Surprise !

Well, I took a swim in the deep end today -- new enjoyable waters with a
  familiar diving partner.

The eve started out well -- Kailash I were hanging out in the studio
took a photo for the interview, I got the keys to my flat then headed to
the Blue Frog with a couple friends to hear a musician. I wasn't so hip on
hearing the music, but to hang out with Monica Randolf something was
  compelling me to go out.

Well,,, the something was my lucky night, perfectly orchestrated by the
  universe.
As we entered the club I saw Sammy, AR's driver who joyfully said hello to
me told me AR is here. So I inquired was lead back to the recording
studios where AR welcomed me with a happy surprised hello. He introduced
me to everyone in the room, including Amir Khan – an actor director in
Hindi cinema I admire – quality films. They're recording the songs for
Amir's next film Gajini which comes out next month.

I hung out,, we had dinner then about 2am AR put a new track up started
discussing the lyrics with me Suzanne, the singer who had previously
written some lyrics for the track. He sketches out the overall theme style
hands me the pad pen while he goes into studio B to record a singer on
another track for the film. I wrote new lyrics, pages of couplets - AR
chooses his favorites, I came up with a new chorus by 530am we recorded
the song to completion. That's how I like to do it! Suzanne sang it
wonderfully – a touch of RB Indian inflections pronunciation with nice
  harmonies ! What fun!

I genuinely enjoy working with AR – I love the immediacy of the process, he
pushes me to be a better writer, we laugh, I grow, I'm challenged it's
  satisfying.

Thank you Universe for the opportunities, thanks Wendy for taking the
risks, stepping up to the cliff leaping – glad the world provided me with
the ability to fly or plung or whatever metaphor you choose – I like air,
water, …. Just feels good to be doing it. I'm grateful desire more! Bring
  it on!!

 Cheers,
 Pradeepan.

I am working as a Sous Chef on board Carnival Cruise Lines and been

enjoy those songs to the max. All my Collegues here and my Boss know that and

I immediately got hold of it and played that in our office , in the first

Later when i told him that it has won Golden Globe he was spellbound and
still he was not that convinced but this time he spent some time listening to
the songs in between his busy schedule, and slowly as we all know after
couple of listen he started singing along Jai Ho and this time he was

Now after this came the PussyCat Doll Remix of Jai Ho and Chef was so excited
that he planned to have this song for the dance show that we host in our

yesterday our Company President and Vice President was on board and they
instantly approved the song and dance to be performed fleetwide ( Carnival
has 23 Ships). It was just an honour for me that i was just taking ARR Sir's
music to the people and see them happy just the way i am when i hear one.
Moreover his song is full of energy that even after a tiresome day of work
one feels like dancing and relaxing to his tunes. That is what it is all

Acapulco(Mexico), Rio de jeniro (Brazil),no jokes it has reached worldwide,
and my Boss was with me and when he came back to ship he kept on telling
everyone that how astonished he was listening to JAIHO in a place like that.

Agree with you on most points, but I don't think its proper to call people who
call themselves as Die-hard AR fans as 'stupids', felt kinda harsh. Sure there
are a lot of other things to discuss here, but people are just sharing their
'personal experiences' with AR's music, and if that's what motivates them in
life to do better, let it.

I, personally think it was stupid of the security guard to have not checked
Dinesh just coz he was carrying an AR pic. Rather than being excited I'd be
disappointed at the lack of importance given on security in India especially at
this point in time.

And yeah, lets imbibe what rahman has tried to teach us all through these
years, he'd be more happy than if you like his music for that.

 Hi All Rahmaniacs,

I read this mail saying - The security gaurd saw A R Rahman's photo in the

Don't you guys think this is too much.. Its good to be ARR's fan, but keep it
at that level. Being a Rahman fan doesn't fill our belly!!

Music is for us to have a good time at our leisure, so keep it at that level.

I accept that A R Rahman is a genius when it comes to music and ask him, he
would definitely attribute that to his hardwork, intelligently making moves,
applying to right academies to appreciate his music - like Academy Awards,
and associating with best in the industry so that all of them benifit by that.

So, all that is his strategy, which we too should learn and apply in our
 respective fields.

There is no reason for us to go on mentioning in every mail that I am a Die
hard Rahmaniac. Just say I like his music.

Instead of saying You know what? Today I was very lucky, I saw HIM at the
 airport
You know, the security guard said you are Rahman fan so you can go without
 security check
kind of things are very stupid.

I am sure that even A R Rahman would not expect these things from us fans.

If you ask him personally, he would say what stupidity his fans do.

Thats what he told in a Sugar-Coated way during Felicitation of ARR by
 Chennai Music Directors Association that
Don't abuse anyone's music, every music director has his own way of doing
 things
Same way he would also say about the stupidity happening here

 Finally,

I TOO AM A DIE HARD FAN OF A R RAHMAN. I RESPECT HIM FOR HIS TALENT.

 But guys, dont act stupidly!!

 Discuss about his compositions,
   * discuss what you liked in it,
   * let the other person also remind you of other composition that you
 might have forgotten,
   * try to enjoy the nuances of his music,
   * focus on lyrics,
   * musical instruments used,
   * the way he switches from one Raga to other,
   * get more technical,
   * teach other who don't know the basics of music like Ragas,
   * discuss those things,
   * share your renditions,
   * let others give their feedback
  - These kind of healthy discussions shud be there. Not saying I saw him
 here, there, kind of things.

Vithur and other co-ordinators please understand my point and explain it to
 other Rahmaniacs.

One final thing, by just talking about the genius of A R Rahman, nothing good
is going to happen to us.

We will just keep seing how high Rahman goes each day.. He has shaped his
life very well. He is planning for what he wants and he is achieving that.
But what about us? When will we be like that

So just admire his talent, aspire to be someone like him, or if music is not
your cup of tea, use that inspiration to become better in you field.

Just use his acheivements as your motivation and ofcourse his music will be
on you side to support you (morally).

IF WE DO THIS, NO ONE WILL BE MORE HAPPIER THAN A R RAHMAN HIMSELF, because

everything in life. And she's enjoying this phase even as she is basking in

*Sure, because you are singing much less...

*I have sung so much since the late '80s despite trying to be choosy, but
now I have realised that to be heard, less is good. It's nice to be a

exclusive as that creates a kind of hunger in you as an artiste. This year,
I have sung only for Anu Malik's Love Story 2050, Ismail Darbar's Mehbooba
and Ada, a small film with good music by A R Rahman and Sajid-Wajid's God
Tussi Great Ho, and I sang even less last year.
   *What about you?

*I am not cribbing because now I get songs that are meant for me and not
for just any singer. Secondly, I have been brought up to vibe well with
every generation of composers, so while institutions like Kalyanji-Anandji
and Laxmikant-Pyarelal were like teachers, and Anu Malik, Nadeem-Shravan,
Jatin-Lalit, Anand-Milind and Rajesh Roshan were friends, I also get along
famously with A R Rahman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Himesh Reshammiya.

Rahman's songs in particular get a lot of mileage and one Rahman number
gets me more attention than four songs of other composers!

*And in which films will we get to hear you now?

*I am singing for Rahman in Yuvraaj and another international project,
for Nadeem-Shravan in Dharmesh Darshan's film, for Jatin Pandit and Lalit

JA together and during Khwaja mere khwaja as I mentioned that music
is by ARR, he said I did not see anything special (sadly enough. may
because it was in bad quality. also we know that ARR's music grows
  but he does not).

I am a known JA basher so I thought I can say about this song also.

khwaja song might be holding additional value for muslims due to its
religious connotations, and for general fans it might have got some high
weightage due to the anecdotes of ARR having composed it already and
then AG using it in the film.

But as a song, I find khwaja song quite barren and monotonous if I can
say that. It is a sort of introvert song giving a feel that a person
must be singing it within his heart and mind. It is his personal
pleasure. Others would not be able to connect to it.

Firstly, the song has some 1:20 initial alaaps that are quire boring to
say and kill the entire beauty of song that comes after that. It is more
like the sounds generated when a player tunes up his instruments
before starting to really play it up. Such a long wasted part is a sin
in current busy time. Those ya khwaja ji, moinuddin, gareeb nawaz are
without any lyrical or music value. So, I think the start itself is
 badly thought up.

But then the song starts with lovely music BUT, BUT BUT poor lyrics. A
typical lack of creativity in the monotonous, logically-built up
lyrics as is usually the case with Javed Akhtar.

 Khwaja Mere Khwaja
 Dil Mein Sama ja
 Bebaso ki Taqdeer
 Tu ne hai sawari

There is no rhyming, no deep devotion. All that dil mein sama ja type
of phrases had been used a 1000 times in cheap ladki-pataao songs in 60s
and here he comes up with that in a 21st century devotional song.

I would say that the major failure of the song remains in the poor
lyrics. Then, it fails in arrangements of vocals. None of the voices
carry and ethos and pathos. They are just singing an any song, not a
religious song for the most respected muslim personality of Indian
subcontinent. pronunciations are also not clear. that bebaso ki taqdeer
tu ne hai sanwari, has bebaso and tu ne pronounced so pooorly that one
has to strain to hear it and make the meaning of it. Sad that it is our
 man himself.

And then Tere darbaar mein khwaza noor ko mainne dekha has noor
pronounced so poorly by our man himself, and then there are alaaps, and
then the music gives the impression that the line is going to be
repeated, tere darbar mein khwaja - but they drop the line
unceremoniously and begin another line- sar jhukaate hain auliya.
What was so great in mentioning that auliya sar jhukate hain, so what,
is that why you feel respect for him? I think the respect should have
come from within, not due to seeing how others are respecting him.

and then tu hai khwaja - rutaba hai pyara chahne se tujhko
mustafa ko paya that xxx is still not clear to my aging ears. and
lastly that hai mere peer ka sadqa, tera daman hai thama, tali hai
bala hamari, chhaya hai khumar tera, jitna bhi rashq karein beshaq, to
ab hai XXX mere khwaja, tere kadmo ko mere rahnuma nahin chhodna gawara.
I don't get what exactly is the concept. No rhyming, no poetry, just
some words have got hammerred in. It must be the poorest lyrics by Javed.

I would say that ARR's voice is also not as sweet enough as he is famed
for, there is a rare shrillness, a hollow in ARR's voice that I don't
remember having heard in any other song. May be he was trying a new
voice but it didn't suit my ears.

all the internal aalaaps also are confusing, making it a classical song.
They are not even bringing a sense of a trance.

And as I already said once that JA music was a personal music and didn't
reflect the lavishness of the film.

I think I can describe now what I meant by that personal vs lavishness.
Listen to the music between 3:40 - 4:05. That Persian sort of. Now, that
is what I call a royal music, that has lavishness, that has luxury, that
is group music, public music. Also the instrument that stars playing at
the backdrop at about 6:10 and continues till the end of song. that
single instrument is giving a royal touch to the song. That type of
music is what I expected to be everywhere in JA music and background,
but no, we didn't get that. Our man had different ideas about music
suitable for the emperor of India. Compare the above two sounds to the
sound at 1:20-1:45. Now this 1:20 sound is what I call a personal sound,
lacking royal touch. It is a commoner's, a poor man's sound, now
 suitable for a period film.

Seeing so many members liking the song so much, mentioning it as their
most fav song, etc., I tried to listen to it

Rahman said that Slumdog Millionaire was definitely not his masterpiece,
Rahman said Jai Ho was more about a burst of joy and signified the release
of external energy. He attributed the awards to Gulzar's skills of making
the songs phonetically catchy which clicked with the Western audience.

Though the Americans are clueless about the meaning of the song, words like
Jai Ho, O Saya, Ringa, ringa seem to have caught their fancy and am happy
that they are now listening to Indian music, said the Oscar winner, who
already has a couple of Hollywood offers at hand.

Music has no language and it is this aspect that the film has brought out,
said Rahman who humbly dedicated his double Oscars to all his countrymen.

I had only five per cent expectation about the Oscar for Slumdog
Millionaire. In fact, I was more bothered about my live performance and that
was extraordinary and its impact was much more, confessed a jet-lagged
Rahman at the first press meet after his Oscar award.

Originally, they wanted me to do a live performance of the Hindi remix
song, aaj ki raat. But I wanted to present my own composition before the
world audience and hence I changed it to Jai Ho, said the Mozart of Madras.

Admitting that he felt more joyous and comfortable with devotional songs
than beat songs, Rahman felt that the Oscars had doubled his responsibility
and that now his priority was doing good films, be it in Tamil, Hindi,
 Telugu or English.

My dream is to connect people with music and probably this incident has
unified all of us. I think this is a starting point of extraordinary
 things, he proclaimed.

When queried about the partying and gifts that followed the Oscars, Rahman
admitted that he had to leave all the champagne bottles back in the US owing
to Customs trouble and brought back only the 2 Oscar statuettes which
carried a cash award of $500 each.

After all that news, it was my kids who were more relieved to see me back.
They bunked school that day and kept on e-mailing me – Daddy, get back to
 us, said the responsible father.

This group of AR Rahman fans feeds the poor every Sunday

 Lakshmi Kumaraswami | TNN

For the past one year, a group of people on motorbikes have been
 congregating at Kodambakkam
every Sunday. Laden with food packets, they hop off their bikes and
 distribute it to anyone who
looks like they need a meal — rag pickers, sewage workers and beggars. These
 good Samaritans
have one thing in common: they are all diehard fans of music maestro AR
 Rahman.

Last March, after meeting on an online group, some of the members —
 Vithur, Uma Shankar,
Rakesh, Rasol Hanifaa and Somu — decided to do their bit for society.
 Usually, we post a
message on the site saying we're going to meet and distribute food to the
 poor. Subsequently,
many people turn up, says Vithur. The group assembles at Shri Mahaganapathy
 fast foods in
Kodambakkam and buys packed food — usually tomato or brinjal rice along with
 an appalam — for
Rs 300 to Rs 500. Then they drive around the area, handing out food to the
 underprivileged. We
initially started out in Annanagar, but then decided to focus on Kodambakkam.
 As Rahman lives
in the area, we feel like we're doing a service and staying close to our
 mentor, says Uma
Shankar. Vithur adds that the students of KM Conservatory also often help out
 and they end up
 feeding at least 40 people.
The group is united by their love for Rahman and inspired by the AR Rahman
 Fo u n d at i o n
, which works towards eradicating poverty and hunger. His humility pushes us
 to do something
good for society. This is our small contribution to a cause he supports,
 says Rakesh. On
special days like Independence Day or Rahman's birthday, the group visits
 orphanages and
distributes a special meal. They organised a similar meal on Rahman's return
 to the city after
his triumphant run at the Oscars. Usually, when we distribute food, we don't
 mention Rahman's
name. But this time as we gave away special sweets and food, we said `Ellam
 pugazhum
irraivanake' as a tribute to him, says Vithur. He adds that the BlaaZe
 joined the group when
they distributed free meals after H Sridhar, Rahman's sound engineer, passed
 away.
The group plans to continue this service as long as possible. We would
 like to expand but
with our hectic schedules this is the only way we can do it regularly, says
 Uma Shankar.
Rakesh adds that there isn't a better feeling than seeing the happiness of
 the people they
feed. It would probably be their only meal that day. Sometimes I leave the
 packets by their
side while they are asleep and when they wake up, nothing can match the look
 on their faces,
 he says.

AM (Mumbai)The Congress will use music composer A R Rahman's Oscar winning
song Jai Ho in its poll campaign for the coming Lok Sabha elections.

The UPA has not only usurped the theme of the Oscar-winning  Slumdog
Millionnaire  to shore up its electoral prospects, it has also bought the
  rights to A R Rahman's Oscar-Winning song Jai Ho from T-Series.

But not everyone's humming a happy tune not least of all the lyrical genius
who penned the catchy Jai Ho lyrics.

Don't make it political, it is such a nice lyrical song by Rahman, don't
make it political, said Gulzar, Lyricist, Oscar Winner for Jai Ho.

Sukhwinder Singh who has sung the song is of a slightly different opinion,
he says, As long as this song is used to bring happiness, I don't have any
objection to it. My work was to sing the song. The music company is totally
free to sell the rights whosoever they want. As far as moral question is
concerned, whether it should be used for political gain or not, I am of the
view that if the song reaches out to more and more people and brings a smile
on the faces, it's good and it serves my purpose too. This is the whole
spirit with which I have sung it.

 Who's AR Rahman?

It is quite amusing to see how geo- political differences can
influence the coverage of events
that have cultural acceptability across borders. KUNAL MAJUMDAR
scans Dawn and The News of
Pakistan, and The Daily Star and The New Age of Bangladesh in search
of two words `AR Rahman'
 and `Oscars'.

 Posted Sunday, Mar 01 15:59:04, 2009

While the Indian media went overboard with the coverage of Oscars,
the Pakistani media tried
its best to ignore the Indian connection. The leading newspaper
Dawn has no mention of AR
Rahman's win. In its lead article – `Slumdog scoops eight of its
ten nominations' (23 Feb,
2009); it does mention that the movie is based in Mumbai and gives
brief outline of the story.
Beyond that, it simply ignores the Indians who won the Oscars. A
feeling that Dawn
intentionally wanted to stress on the poverty angle of the story
comes with the accompanying
articles and photographs of slum kids.

The News, of the Jang Group, was no different. The article --
`Slumdog Millionaire' wins Oscar
gold at 81'st Academy Awards (February 24, 2009) tells the readers
that Slumdog is small-budget
British movie on A ragtag group of Indian orphans. The writer
mentions how the cast and the
crew of the movie was present to accept the best film award, which
included several school
children who were plucked from Mumbai's shantytowns to appear in the
movie. AR Rahman again
 ignored!

The Daily Times also ignores the Indian winners. However, it has a
more sympathetic approach.
It quotes Danny Boyle offering gratitude to Mumbaikars and saying
they even, dwarf even this
guy (Oscar statue). The newspaper is the only one to carry a
photograph of the cast and crew
of the film, where you can see Anil Kapoor, AR Rahman and Rasul
Pookuthy.

One wonders how many Pakistanis actually know about Penelope Cruz
and Hugh Jackman, compared to
 AR Rahman!

 Bangladeshi awareness

Bangladeshi newspapers seem to be much more aware about the Indians
in the movie. In an article
 – Oscar Glory for `Slumdog'(February 24, 2009), The Daily Star
mentions AR Rahman's win quite
prominently. The newspaper calls Slumdog Millionaire a feel-good
film about a Mumbai tea boy
who rises from poverty and enters a television quiz show to win
millions and find the love of
his life. Quite a contrast to Pakistani media's definition. It goes
on to mention that in
spite of being directed and produced by Englishmen, many Indians
claim it to be their own. A
very just portray of the debate in India on the movie. The article
also mentions about Resul
Pookutty and the best documentary – Smile Pinki. Photographs
alongside have AR Rahman with his
 two Oscar statues.

`AR Rahman wins Golden Globe' was the front-page story on The New
Age (February 24, 2009). The
newspaper used Reuter's input and made Rahman's win the peg of the
story. The writer spoke
about the versatility of Rahman's music and his other achievements.
While other western actors
and films did get a mention, but it didn't dominate the story unlike
the Pakistani coverage.

It is quite amusing to find how geo- political differences can
influence the coverage of events
that have cultural acceptability across borders.

You put it very well! My dad loves the classical old tamil malayalam
songs, whenever I play ANY say 'fast track' he doesn't seem to like
it. He likes slow and soft music and doesn't care for whose music it
is by. I was wondering how people could listen to and love say Himesh
or even Anu Malik. But there is something about them which attracts
people, and they love AR too, but are more into the former. So at the
end of the day, its all about personal choices. And a majority of
youngsters in my college love AR and seem to connect with his music
instantly, but it varies with every album. They loved 'Jaane tu' more
than JA, but for me it's vice-versa.

--- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Chord purev...@... wrote:

After reading Jagjit Singh's, Pyarelal's and Ali Khan's comments

ARR and his music, it also struck me the big generational
differences
in terms of attitudes and exposure towards music. Personally, I
have
found that even with people I know, like my parents and their
friends,
their appreciation for music is within a narrow range. Anything
outside that range is overlooked and not appreciated as much, and
sometimes ridiculed. I have found that amongst many elders, there
is
a certain arrogance or haughtiness implying, we know what's best.
This is a product of our culture revering elders and their wisdom by
tradition in contrast to many seniors and elders feeling left out
and
disrespected by attitudinal changes in today's world reflecting less
 respect and reverie towards seniors.

For example, when I gave my parents a copy of the D6 CD, they only
liked the folk and semi-classical elements of the soundtrack.
That's
it. When I asked them about Jaane Tu, they said that they didn't
like
the music, although they love and appreciate ARR's other works that
are more in line with their taste. Of course, even within elders,
there will be a lot of variation in terms of taste and attitude, but
overall, I feel that they are more narrow minded about music than we
youngsters are OVERALL AS A GROUP, keeping in mind individual
differences. Because ARR's music is so diverse and touching upon so
many different genres, a large percentage of his work is not going
to
be appreciated by those with more narrow minded definitions of good
 music.

Who knows, maybe when we reach that age, we too may reflect some of
that narrow mindedness in terms of our exposure compared to what the
youth may be listening to at that time. However, I have hope that
because we youngsters have been exposed to such an array of world
music through ARR and other artists, I think we will generally have
a
broader appreciation for music than previous generations.

ARR has gifted us with something very important: tolerance and open
mindedness for different types of music. Thank you ARR!

All ten songs by Golden Globe and BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee

Rahman are joyful and diverse, partaking from a wider number of
styles
 than his Slumdog soundtrack.

In addition to the director and composer A.R. Rahman (who is
currently being showered with awards for his score for Slumdog
Millionaire), the luminous stars were on hand to greet the crowd.

Maybe the runaway success of Slumdog Millionaire will inspire
western
audiences to sample more authentic Bollywood fare; with its first-
rate
music, world-class stars, and postcard-ready views of India (not to
mention the relatively reasonable running time), Delhi 6 presents an
 especially welcoming option.

AR has always been in the spotlight. Rahman has had a BIG role in

Chennai: Did you know that Slumdog Millionaire - the film that
bagged eight Oscars this year - had no takers when it was released?
And that Rahman feels more passionate about his songs in the Aamir
Khan-starrer Lagaan than about Jai Ho?

“ I had only five per cent expectation about the Oscar for Slumdog
Millionaire. In fact, I was more bothered about my live performance
and that was extraordinary and its impact was much more,” confessed a
jet-lagged Rahman at the first press meet after his Oscar award on
Thursday, February 26, in Chennai.

“Originally, they wanted me to do a live performance of the Hindi
remix song, aaj ki raat. But I wanted to present my own composition
before the world audience and hence I changed it to Jai Ho,” said the
Mozart of Madras, who made up for the two-hour delay in the press meet
by patiently obliging the battery of press photographers and
television crew with exclusive shots with both Oscars in hand.

“Music has no language and it is this aspect that the film has
brought out,” said Rahman who humbly dedicated his double Oscars to
all his countrymen.

Confessing that Slumdog Millionaire was definitely not his
masterpiece, Rahman said Jai Ho was more about “a burst of joy and
signified the release of external energy.” He attributed the awards
to Gulzar’s skills of making the songs “phonetically catchy”
which clicked with the Western audience.

“Though the Americans are clueless about the meaning of the song,
words like Jai Ho, O Saya, Ringa, ringa seem to have caught their
fancy and am happy that they are now listening to Indian music,” said
the Oscar winner, who already has a couple of Hollywood offers at
hand.

When pointed out that the film had bagged the Oscars only under a
British tag, Rahman replied, “Hollywood is the world’s stage and
films are pieces of art and they are valued for their worth. Only
India had not got there till now but this was India’s time. Danny
Boyle’s film was a beautiful one and my music was just an ornament
that added to the beauty. This award would popularise Indian music in
the world scenario. A lot of collaboration is possible now.”

Admitting that he felt more joyous and comfortable with devotional
songs than beat songs, Rahman felt that the Oscars had doubled his
responsibility and that now “his priority was doing good films, be
it in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu or English.”

“My dream is to connect people with music and probably this
incident has unified all of us. I think this is a starting point of
extraordinary things,” he proclaimed.

When queried about the partying and gifts that followed the Oscars,
Rahman admitted that he had to leave all the champagne bottles back in
the US owing to Customs trouble and brought back only the 2 Oscar
statuettes “which carried a cash award of $500 each”.

“After all that news, it was my kids who were more relieved to see
me back. They bunked school that day and kept on e-mailing me †
Daddy, get back to us,” said the responsible father.

*AO: If you had to pick a ideal acceptance speech because I know you
have
the Golden Globes one and the BAFTA Awards which was very short,
what would
be your ideal acceptance speech when you chilled out in saying it,
without
 millions of eyes on you?*

AR: There's no ideal acceptance speech. You forget something
always. When
you have a piece of paper, it looks ugly. Normally I would just say
All
Praises To God and escape, but now I need to say things about
people that
worked hard, like, you know, Sam Schwartz is my agent in Hollywood
and the
PR people, Hindi PR, and I have to say all the people who have
given
extraordinary opportunity for me to do music in India which became a
bridge
for me to do... um, go to the West, to get the love from the
audience, and
all the people who have given good suggestions, you know, all the
singers,
all the recording engineers, all the musicians, all the lyricists
are very
important, all the people who acted all of the lovely ladies and the
guys in
the action movies, so there's no end actually.

*AO: So there's a long list then, actually?
 *

AR: I can't hold any of my own awards. I can just represent all of
them and
 get...(laughs).

*AO: And you know one of the sad things that has happened recently
is H.
Sridhar (Rahman's sound engineer who has passed away)*

AR: It's sad in a way and it's happy in a way actually.

 *AO: Yeah?
 *

AR: Happy because you can see the whole world point of view in two
different
angles, one as never being born and being born and having the
torture of
living life and living your life and making other people happy is
also one
thing. So here's a person who has worked so hard, who has made
other people
happy who had made a great contribution to art and he's pushed me on
recording and has guided me so much in the beginning days, I owed
him for
having all this extraordinary technology we had, with the support
of him
and both us withstood through that stuff and in a way when you see a
person
die with a good name and people come to mourn and comfort mourners
as I was
then old and cynical and abusing the inner community (laughs) which
we also
see that, but I also wish that, you know, I should go in a way where
I'm not
cynical and not pessimistic about the talent which I hunger and
embraced it
anyway, so that's very important, and to get a good meal every time
. I
pity his family though because I think he died very young. He was
only 48.
 His kids are great.

*AO: Great musicians as well I hear...*

AR: Yeah, they are good. They're gonna be hopefully joining me.

*AO: Really? Excellent! That's great to hear. Speaking of that, who
do you
think... It's a question that many people have said. Who do you
think your
successor will be? I ask this because you've left an indelible mark
already
 in just over a decade.*

AR: I don't know. My kids-I just want to probably educate my kids
in music
and let them have a choice. If I think that, well I know a lot of
musicians
who have done the mistake... well maybe not a mistake, but in my
point of
view, like great violin players and great trumpet players, you know,
they're
all like My sons should not be in music. They should find another,
more
stable job. They've enjoyed the pleasure of being musicians, which
is a
strange case of us not having any more musicians, or very few
musicians who
want their sons to be going into that. I feel it's in a way,
betrayal not
to put your kids into the art which gave you livelihood and gave you
the
respect and love from the people.

*AO: So, what's on your iPod right now?*

AR: I don't have an iPod now (laughs)

*AO: What music are you listening to?*

AR: I'm mostly listening to a film because I'm constantly
traveling. In
L.A. I was listening to a hip-hop station and in London, a classical
 station.

*AO: So what does it feel like to be getting this massive
recognition?
We've been waiting for this for years. I know your fans have been
waiting
for years to see this. I always say, Is the Nobel Peace Prize
next?*

AR: I think the whole attention thing gets wrong if you're craving
that
stuff. I just want to do my bit and get out. And I wanna build
with
people, not destroy them like [Barack] Obama says (laughs). That
was a
great statement that I loved from Obama saying that Know that your
people
will judge you on what you can

 AR
Rahman said this in a press meet organized at Vadapalani(Chennai)

pressmen, cinema artists, video cameramen and other technicians and
this was telecasted live in most channels.
 He also added that had
IR tried a different strategy in promoting his music to the mass, he
would have got an Oscar a long time ago and praised Illayaraja
saying
there is no boundries for Illayaraja's music and Oscar award is
nothing

 When asked if straight Indian
movies could also win Oscar awards, Rahman said it is possible but
there is a pattern/formula for impressing the jury at the Oscar and
should our film makers crack that formula and play the right strings
we
could win Oscars for Indian movies as well.

The worst was when he said, his dream was to see AR win an Oscar, how
could then not have seen it LIVE? Or did he watch it and then lie to
the press, coz he was not there in LA to perform.

He also indicated he didn't care a damn about performing at the Oscars
but later said that he was disappointed! :O

When asked as to why he couldn't perform there, he said he hadn't
received any calls from the events guys, and that AR had also not
picked up his calls. But later said AR was in no way responsible for
him not being there.

THE world is giving him a standing ovation, and rightfully so,
even though the Oscars
ceremony is over and done with. But music composer AR Rahman takes
the adulation so
nonchalantly that it surprises you. The man who bagged two Oscars
for the Best Original Score
for Slumdog Millionaire and its foot-tapping song Jai Ho! speaks to
BT after catching barely
two hours' sleep after the Academy Awards.
India got three Oscars on one day when the country had been
waiting for an Oscar ever since
Bhanu Athaiya and Satyajit Ray got Academy Awards for India decades
ago. It seems Bollywood
magic is finally sweeping the world in a big way. Ask him about this
and the musical wizard
says, Slumdog Millionaire may have served as a catalyst for
Bollywood's recognition, but
Indian music has always inspired people all over the world. It has
an inherent magical quality,
which has a wide appeal. However, to get appreciation from one's
peers is always a humbling
 experience.
The world watched in awe as Rahman dedicated his Oscar to god
and his mother. Millions of
people across the world who were watching the Oscars were bowled
over when Rahman said in true
Bollywood ishtyle, Mere paas maa hai! How did his mother react
when he went to her after
receiving the Oscars? She blessed me and was overwhelmed. I thank
god and my mom, whose
blessings have always been with me, he says with his inimitable
simplicity.
 This
 is
 the first
 time a typical
 Bollywood number
 was presented at the
 Oscars. Is there any
chance of this becoming a permanent feature? There's no dearth
of talent in Bollywood. I'm
sure there will be many more such performances from now on. The USP
of Indian music is its
allencompassing nature and the entire world is its canvas now,
answers the maestro.
This latest barrage of Oscars has put India on the world
creativity map. But Rahman fans
have already started fretting about whether the illustrious musician
will shift base to
Hollywood permanently. Try telling him this and Rahman quickly
reacts, India is where my roots
lie and there's no question of bidding adieu to my motherland!

what he has been able to contribute to music and to India.

I had spoken to him not only about this, but about other albums as
well. He has always been
able to produce something special in every album, Tendulkar said.

Rahman won two Oscars - for the best original score and the best
song.

I share similar views. For me Delhi 6 is like a piece of abstract
art with gentle brush strokes. Its very metaphoric. I liked the whole
format and narrative, which may or may not be box office friendly. The
characters were well etched and the AR's score elevated the film.
Beautiful camera work and I loved the whole concept of Dil Gira
Dafatan picturization. My only peeve would have to be the film's
ending. Hmm..

 Sunil

I watched Delhi 6 yesterday night to celebrate Rahman's Oscar win
and
enjoyed every second of the movie. Please do not listen / do not
read
the rubbish some pseudo intelligent critics have printed or the
reviews on TV dubbing this movie as a dud.

This movie certainly rocks for following reasons,
 1. Songs are a treat to watch.
 2. The movie does have a story.
 3. The first half is not at all boring.
 4. All characters of the movie do not appear to act, they move
effortlessly in and out of the frame.
 5. Dialogues are crisp Delhi style fire-crackers.
 6. Locations and situations are really really great !

 6 reasons for Delhi 6 !

Rakyesh Mehra has certainly directed this movie with lot of heart
and
 conviction and it shows.

Go and WATCH this MOVIE !

Yeah! The best part is that he didn't react as 'OMG I can't believe
it' and kept his composure and delivered his speech.

I loved both of those speeches, esp the last line, I had two choices
all my life, 'hatred and Love' I chose Love and I am here, God bless.

That quote will be remembered for a long time now!
