You could use HTML formatted emails for Approval with a hyperlink "Approve"

have workflow to update the approval status.

Question about Data Management Tool

2009-11-24 Thread Gianluca Nieri
Hi everybody,
I have a question about Data Management Tool.
I'm configuring a new Incident 7.3 but I can't figure in which xls specify
Access Restrictions for people (I'm using multy tennancy and I want that one
people can see only his company tickets).
Also, how is possible to specify that a support user belongs to multiple
groups?

Thanks for the answer, gian

Integrating SRM with Blackberry -- what do you mean?

Being able to Request a service?

Being able to check status of a service?

Being able to approve?

Being able to fulfill?

The main issue is -- SRM is built on MidTier -- MidTier does not support
the blackberry. So -- if you want to integrate it -- you are probably
going to end up writing your own .java .jsp etc

I would think it would be easiest to tackle the approvals. Requests and
fulfillments may be quite dynamic -- and therefore much harder.

After scrutinizing the OBJSTR:Class form. I found that the Recon ID on one

So I my case, my model looks fine. However, it seems that the arcmdbd and

CMDB 2.1 p6 fixes this issue (SW00302593).

Re: Process Hanging

2009-11-24 Thread Lyle Taylor
The following two lines are for the Fast and List threads, respectively:

Private-RPC-Socket: 390620 12 20
Private-RPC-Socket: 390635 12 20

All thread queues whether the traditional Fast, List, etc., or actual new
private queues are represented in the config file with Private-PRC-Socket.
Certain types of threads simply have well-defined RPC numbers like the two
above that determine how they are used by the system.

Brandi,

You have a series of private queues listed, but I don't see any indication
what the fast and list queues are set to. Do you have everyone on private
queues?

If folks are running reports that have a query that takes a bit of time,
they tie up that thread until their results come back. No-one else can use
that thread until theirs is complete. So to the users, the system is hung
while it's actually working. I've had similar situations before (granted on
an Oracle db) and had to look at the Remedy logs in conjunction with a DBA
looking at what is happening in the database.

Hope this helps some

ARS 7.1.0
ITSM 7.0.3
SQL 2005 on remote server
Windows 2003

We turned on and configured SLM and about or right at that time our system
became slower and it started hanging up. The arerror.log only shows the
following:
Tue Nov 24 16:25:15 2009 390635 : AR System server terminated when a

Tue Nov 24 16:25:15 2009 0xc0fd
Tue Nov 24 16:25:15 2009 390635 : AR System server terminated -- fatal error

in the arthread log it shows:
 /* Tue Nov 24 2009 10:52:12.5620 */ Thread Trace Log -- ON (AR Server
7.1.00 Patch 002 200802011900)

on LIST queue died.
 /* Tue Nov 24 2009 14:04:27.7550 */ Thread Id 1904 (thread number  24)
on LIST queue restarted.
 /* Tue Nov 24 2009 14:05:19.9140 */ Thread Id 3420 (thread number  38)
on FAST queue started.

Always a LIST queue that dies;
We have increased threads:
Private-RPC-Socket: 390601 1 1
Private-RPC-Socket: 390603 2 2
Private-RPC-Socket: 390620 12 20
Private-RPC-Socket: 390626 2 3
Private-RPC-Socket: 390635 12 20
Since we have 4 processors (well really 2 with 2 core)

The Filter-Max-Total was changed since we have the ITSM suite.
Filter-Max-Total: 50
Filter-Max-Stack: 1

I have changed any Custom escalations that may have some sort of hit on the
system to either in off hours or to at least less frequent.

Now the problem seems to be anytime we have someone run a report or what most
likely is happening is 2 people are running reports the system hangs.
The user tool hangs up and the process for arserver.exe has a memory usage of
either over 800,000K or just under that. The actual service does not stop
however you can not do anything until the service is restarted.
As this is a fairly new system it now has more users then ever and more actions
are being taken. However with it crashing around 6 times a day it is not
useful. Turning on SLM may be just a coincedence however we have a lot of
Service Targets.
Has anyone seen this and the memory usage going that high? Support wants me to
limit the search to 1000. But we have way more that many tickets in one day
and Management will not allow that to happen.

Any help would be appreciated.

be the whole problem. The timing is just off on when everything started

Now the problem seems to be anytime we have someone run a report or what
most likely is happening is 2 people are running reports the system hangs.

The user tool hangs up and the process for arserver.exe has a memory usage
of either over 800,000K or just under that. The actual service does not
stop however you can not do anything until the service is restarted.
As this is a fairly new system it now has more users then ever and more
actions are being taken. However with it crashing around 6 times a day it
is not useful. Turning on SLM may be just a coincedence however we have
a lot of Service Targets.
Has anyone seen this and the memory usage going that high? Support wants
me to limit the search to 1000. But we have way more that many tickets in
one day and Management will not allow that to happen.

Any help would be appreciated.

Which ARS 7.1.0 patch level are you on (Patch 8 was released on November 20th)?
I think Patch 6 or 7 fixed a bug relating to reports.

operating in a server group? One thing I've wondered is if this could be
related to a busy server and another server in the group taking over e-mail
processing, even though it is already being taken care of. I've seen cases
of that, but I haven't been able to correlate it with this issue yet.

I second this. This is one of the more frustrating aspects of application
logging with several of the applications and subsystems. Date/time stamps
should _always_ be included in system log files but often isn't. The
logging is not nearly as useful without that information.

What is this... "CMDB Nightmares" -- a new reality show on FOX? 8-)

I've done something similar -- mine was related to version mismatch though
and classes stuck in pending. BMC had me check some of the backend data,
and use cmdbdriver to clean stuff up. I don't have the specifics though.
I'll let someone more technically astute in the inner workings of the CMDB
to advise.

I accidentally deleted the Base Element class definition from the

I was adding a field to BaseElement and there were two entries on the
Class Manager Console, one Active and one Change Pending. The change I
was trying to make failed and in my tired state I highlighted the line
that was Active and deleted it! Fortunately the one that says Change
Pending is still there and from what I can tell looks just like the
one that was Active.

Everything appears to be OK but am now wondering if I can change the
status of the current Change Pending class definition record to Active
or have I caused more damage than I'm seeing?

Thank you

Re: Repair of CMDB forms

2009-11-24 Thread Lyle Taylor
I'm not sure about the rest, but I think I can answer about the custom tabs, at
least in the Asset forms. In the asset forms, they come from running the
cmdb2asset utility (or by triggering it via the Sync Asset UI with CMDB form
under the App Admin Console). When you do that, it creates hidden tabs that
contain all of the visible fields defined on the class. You can then move the
fields from the custom tab to where you want them to live on the asset form.
OOB, I think it just installs the forms as BMC defined them, so you don't see
the custom tabs. Once you run the utility, though, it adds the tabs so that
you can then have access to the new fields added, etc.

Hi all,

ARS 7.1
ITSM 7.0.3 p7

I'm currently putting our CMDB stuff back together and have a question about
the 'custom' tabs that appear in the forms. My dev system has 8 custom tabs
for the base element form and my prod system has none. I'm wondering if anyone
can tell me which installer puts those in. They look like asset management
things to me mostly, but I want to double check.

When I ran the asset management installer I got a whole sheaf of errors about
missing forms and such, so I'm trying to work my way backwards to the thing I
have to do again to get this all working again.

For a little background, our CMDB was quite mangled. I had to follow the
instructions for uninstalling it. Of course, removing it also removed a lot of
join forms that depend on it and I did that. I was hoping that reinstalling
the CMDB and then coming back through with the other module installers
afterward would be enough to put it all back together. So far, it's looking
like that is not the case. Anyone have experience with this? Anyone able to
tell me how deep the quicksand is that I've stumbled into? 8)

Re: Repair of CMDB forms

2009-11-24 Thread Tommy Morris
I agree, I have tried to patch over a messed up install of CMDB and
spent most of a month solid on the phone with BMC to manually correct
the install. Now I want to upgrade to 7.6 and I am in the same boat
again because the manual install must not have been completed correctly
either.

When I ran the asset management installer I got a whole sheaf of errors

For a little background, our CMDB was quite mangled. I had to follow
the
instructions for uninstalling it. Of course, removing it also removed a
lot of
join forms that depend on it and I did that. I was hoping that
reinstalling the
CMDB and then coming back through with the other module installers
afterward
would be enough to put it all back together. So far, it's looking like
that is
not the case. Anyone have experience with this? Anyone able to tell me

The basic CMDB install was corrupted with a non-join form missing,
applying a patch will not create a form that was not created on an
initial install.

Yah. I saw that on the system I just took over. Take a look at the class
manager and you might find the model is mangled. Mine showed classes belonging
to superclasses that did not match what they were supposed to be. I couldn't
fix it and had to strip out the CMDB to start over and now I've got a mess. I
hope you aren't in that situation.

ITSM 7.0.3 - Tracking Work Effort

2009-11-24 Thread Chowdhury, Tauf
All,

Here is the dilemma... I'll use Incident Management as an example but
really, it affects all modules.

1. The assignee of an incident does some work on the request on
week 1. In the work effort, he/she puts in 10 minutes spent.

2. On week 2, the assignee does 20 minutes of work and updates the
effort log.

3. The system creates a single record for the assignee when the
1st 10 minutes was submitted in week 1 and creates a record in the Work
effort form.

4. For the 2nd week, the system updates that same record and adds
20 minutes and so we have a total of 30 minutes.

The problem that our organization is running into is this.

1. We run weekly reports on how much time is spent on requests.

2. For tickets that are opened and closed in the same week, the
reports work fine.

3. However, for the scenario mentioned above, it pretty much falls
apart.

4. Week 1 shows that the assignee did 10 minutes of work on this
incident.

5. Week 2 shows that assignee did 30 minutes of work for this
incident when really, it was just 20. (This is the problem).

Has anyone else dealt with something like this?

What I was thinking as a possible solution is to piggy back off of the
OOB workflow and do the following:

1. Create a custom form that can be used to collect work effort
info about all the modules in this 1 form.

2. Build workflow that creates a record in the custom form much
like the work effort forms and updates the record only for a given week.
Once the next week starts and someone updates work effort for an older
incident, a new record is created on this form and the process
continues.

Any other ideas would be helpful.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving for those who are observing in the States!

Use the corresponding number instead of using the display value, no need
for quotes then at all.

Re: Naming Standards

2009-11-24 Thread Lyle Taylor
Yeah, that works too. My reason for making it a prefix is that I like to be
able to see at a glance everything I've modified. Using a prefix allows me to
easily group it all together. Then I can say, "ok, these are the things I've
modified. Did the patch affect any of the original items?" With a well
defined suffix and the ability to easily filter in Developer Studio, that may
be less of an issue.

Hi,

I also prefer to use a suffix(if not a phase 1 filter), then it is
easier to see which object that has been changed when patching and
upgrading. Easy to sort on the name, and then see which object that
has been changed.

As you mention, with version 7.5 it may be easier to track changes
using the modification tracking

I wrote up a document on how to do this years ago, but as has been said, it
was just ONE right way of doing it, not necessary THE right way. You should
do what fits your business and technical needs. As long as it makes sense
to you and whoever follows you, and does not make upgrades harder than they
otherwise would be, that's all that counts.

Edward,

The processes you mention are not involved in creating CIs manually.

It looks like some filters associated with the AST and/or BMC forms have
been lost.

Open the admin tool and look at the filters on, for example, the
AST:Computer and BMC.CORE:BMC_ComputerSystem forms.

Compare these with a working system to identify if any have been lost.

And I prefer to append a suffix to modified ITSM, after disabling the ootb
workflow, so that it sorts with the rest of the workflow but can be
identified easily. I use a prefix if the work is custom.

A million ways to skin the cat. I'd be interested in hearing some
creative uses for packing lists or other 'new' features (object
modification tracking anyone) to manage customizations and the ITSM7
patching process. (A bit off topic.) I have some ideas but most have
proven too unwieldily to manage. I guess when put into the context of
patching ITSM7 though it's easy. :-)

I?ve seen several naming standards, and lots of passion around some of
them, but most of the ones I?ve seen are too complex and, IMO,
unnecessary. My preference is to keep it simple and readable without
trying to embed too much information into the name. Generally, I do
something like this:

:

is something specific to your organization that groups all of
your custom workflow together. That way, you keep all of your stuff in
one place, and it?s very easy to see what?s OOB and what?s yours. The
prefix may also be more than one level, kind of like this:
::. That helps to group related
workflow together. For active links, I may even have a third level to
indicate the primary form they?re with, but not always.

For example, I might have something like this:

LDS:MIRS:Config:Load Configuration Settings

In this case, I have three prefixes (probably the most I would
generally have). The first one says it?s for our organizations. The
second one is the app it?s associated with. And the third one is the
form it?s for (the configuration console). The primary reason for that
is that I have a group of workflow related to that form, and this makes
it easy to view and work with as a group. That?s not strictly
necessary, since you can view by or filter by the primary form, etc.,
but this works well for me.

I use two different prefixes for the organization, one for completely
custom workflow, and another for modified OOB workflow where we
disabled the original and copy it to a new object and modify the copied
object the way we need. For example, if I want to modify the following
active link

HPD:INC:DetailsCurrentIncident_100_OpenDlg

I would copy it to

LDS_HPD:INC:DetailsCurrentIncident_100_OpenDlg

And then disable the original and modify the copy. Using the
underscore makes it obvious that it?s modified OOB workflow rather than
our custom workflow. That?s important when you?re patching the system,
and you need to know what you?ve modified so you can verify that the
patch hasn?t broken something, or if you can now undo something you did
before, because the patch fixed the issue you were working around.

For the last part, I prefer not to try to embed all kinds of things
like the execution order, details about what the active link does,
etc. They tend to make the names cryptic, and don?t add much useful
information from what I?ve seen, especially given the tools we have to
work with now. In addition, since names can be quite long, I generally
don?t abbreviate words much, and often include spaces in the words.
The description I use usually is a short description of what the active
link accomplishes or what triggers it. I often use the latter for
active links attached to buttons, etc. That works well for me, because
I generally have the practice of having a single active link on the
button that then calls a guide to do the work rather than having a
bunch of active links on the button with different execution orders.
I?ve found that works better for me.

So that gives me names like this:

LDS:MIRS:Console:Check Required Fields
LDS:MIRS:Console:Clear Form

Or

LDS:MIRS:Console:Cancel Button Clicked
LDS:MIRS:Console:Assigned Group Entered

Occasionally, I will add additional information like sequence numbers
of there are two pieces of workflow that are conceptually together.
That is, there is conceptually one action being done, but it needs to
be done in two steps. Like this:

LDS:MIRS:Console:Lookup Assignee_1
LDS:MIRS:Console:Lookup Assignee_2

Looking up and validating the Assignee takes two active links to
complete (one to do the look up, and another to verify that it
succeeded), and since they?re intimately tied together, I give them the

I was wondering if there are any good standards for naming filters and active

what worked for the previous Admins. Also is there any need/value to having the

The first part of the name indicates what it’s about (in this case,

indicates the field I’m validating.  Doing it this way groups the names
together in the list and still makes it easy to see the two different
parts of the name.  You could just as easily use some other separator
that stands out to you as well.

So, in general, I don’t get much more complicated than that, because I

complicate application or set of applications (e.g., ITSM) could

Re: Naming Standards

2009-11-24 Thread Lyle Taylor
I've seen several naming standards, and lots of passion around some of them,
but most of the ones I've seen are too complex and, IMO, unnecessary. My
preference is to keep it simple and readable without trying to embed too much
information into the name. Generally, I do something like this:

:

is something specific to your organization that groups all of your
custom workflow together. That way, you keep all of your stuff in one place,
and it's very easy to see what's OOB and what's yours. The prefix may also be
more than one level, kind of like this: ::.
That helps to group related workflow together. For active links, I may even
have a third level to indicate the primary form they're with, but not always.

For example, I might have something like this:

LDS:MIRS:Config:Load Configuration Settings

In this case, I have three prefixes (probably the most I would generally have).
The first one says it's for our organizations. The second one is the app it's
associated with. And the third one is the form it's for (the configuration
console). The primary reason for that is that I have a group of workflow
related to that form, and this makes it easy to view and work with as a group.
That's not strictly necessary, since you can view by or filter by the primary
form, etc., but this works well for me.

I use two different prefixes for the organization, one for completely custom
workflow, and another for modified OOB workflow where we disabled the original
and copy it to a new object and modify the copied object the way we need. For
example, if I want to modify the following active link

HPD:INC:DetailsCurrentIncident_100_OpenDlg

I would copy it to

LDS_HPD:INC:DetailsCurrentIncident_100_OpenDlg

And then disable the original and modify the copy. Using the underscore makes
it obvious that it's modified OOB workflow rather than our custom workflow.
That's important when you're patching the system, and you need to know what
you've modified so you can verify that the patch hasn't broken something, or if
you can now undo something you did before, because the patch fixed the issue
you were working around.

For the last part, I prefer not to try to embed all kinds of things like the
execution order, details about what the active link does, etc. They tend to
make the names cryptic, and don't add much useful information from what I've
seen, especially given the tools we have to work with now. In addition, since
names can be quite long, I generally don't abbreviate words much, and often
include spaces in the words. The description I use usually is a short
description of what the active link accomplishes or what triggers it. I often
use the latter for active links attached to buttons, etc. That works well for
me, because I generally have the practice of having a single active link on the
button that then calls a guide to do the work rather than having a bunch of
active links on the button with different execution orders. I've found that
works better for me.

So that gives me names like this:

LDS:MIRS:Console:Check Required Fields
LDS:MIRS:Console:Clear Form

Or

LDS:MIRS:Console:Cancel Button Clicked
LDS:MIRS:Console:Assigned Group Entered

Occasionally, I will add additional information like sequence numbers of there
are two pieces of workflow that are conceptually together. That is, there is
conceptually one action being done, but it needs to be done in two steps. Like
this:

LDS:MIRS:Console:Lookup Assignee_1
LDS:MIRS:Console:Lookup Assignee_2

Looking up and validating the Assignee takes two active links to complete (one
to do the look up, and another to verify that it succeeded), and since they're
intimately tied together, I give them the same name with a sequence number.

I occasionally use underscores in the name when I want to visually separate two
parts of a name, like this:

LDS:MIRS:Console:Required Field_Assigned Group
LDS:MIRS:Console:Required Field_Assignee

The first part of the name indicates what it's about (in this case, validating
required fields), and the second part after the underscore indicates the field
I'm validating. Doing it this way groups the names together in the list and
still makes it easy to see the two different parts of the name. You could just
as easily use some other separator that stands out to you as well.

So, in general, I don't get much more complicated than that, because I don't
see much value in many of the complicated naming conventions I've seen,
including the ones used by BMC. That said, a large and complicate application
or set of applications (e.g., ITSM) could benefit from a rigorous naming
standard, but I'm not sure it needs to be as complex as what they've used in
the past. Embedding too much information in the name just makes it hard to
read, and harder to maintain. For example, if you include the execution order
in the name, you'll need to renaming the object if the execution order changes.

Service Management Process Model (SMPM): version 7.5/6? How to get a real copy?

2009-11-24 Thread Rabi Tripathi
Hi all, I see that SMPM 7.1 is available on BMC's support site. Is there
anything newer?

Also, what you can download from the site is an eval copy. How do you get a
real copy? Looks like organization with just ARS and Service Desk license are
not entitled to it.

How much does it cost and is it worth paying to get the extra in the paid
version?

---
If you're wondering what's SMPM:
It's BMC's "Service Management Process Model" introduced with ITSM 7.?.

For me, it's a group of clickable process maps that describe ITIL processes
automated by ITSM products, such as Incident Management, Change Management,
Release Management. They also reference steps you would take in ITSM apps to
move along the process. Very useful.

It's supposed to fill the gap that existed between ITIL's guidelines and actual
use of the tool/process. ITIL mostly describes guidelines in words/pictures,
but gives you no comprehensive process map. ITSM in the past has been fuzzy
about the process it automates. SMPM is intended to demonstrate an ITIL like
process that maps to the ITSM applications and their specific features,
workflow.

It's customizable, so if you adopt a customized tool/process, SMPM can reflect
that. Never used it, but sounds very useful.

Naming Standards

2009-11-24 Thread Brittain, Mark
Hi All,

I was wondering if there are any good standards for naming filters and active
links. On my server there is an amazing mix that appears to be dependant on
what worked for the previous Admins. Also is there any need/value to having the
name all one word like the last two examples. Really makes it hard to
read/find. Here are some examples of what I have.

CR-950-Notify Deinstall Closed-Cancelled
CR-UpdateAuditLogforAttachmentAdd
CR:SM-Company-ChkDefaultEmail-600 (SM=Submit/Modify)

Re: AREA authentication with CAS

2009-11-24 Thread Rabi Tripathi
Sereche,
I briefly looked at doing something similar, but I have put it on hold for now.
Part of the issue was that I don't understand all the terminologies and
concepts involved in the literature out there about
authentication/authorization mechanisms to make much sense and to figure out
what is the best course of action for me. Not a situation I like being in, but
I couldn't spend much time to overcome it.

Here's a tip of potentially dubious value: It appears that use of Kerberos may
simplify what you are trying to do. People have sample code for Kerberos based
authentication with Remedy. CAS I believe can handle that.

In my case, it appeared that doing authentication for web based clients is
easier than doing it for Windows client. I have a mixed client base, so that
doesn't help much.

Another trivia...Remedy can handle authentication through LDAP very easily, no
code required. So, if your LDAP is setup to talk to CAS, organizations have
used Remedy<->LDAP<-> to do
authentication. Remedy won't know and won't care that LDAP is just a relay and
is having CAS do the real authentication.

Here's something worth a look:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/web/library/wa-singlesign/

Sorry, I just have these random tidbits.

The only remedy architecture that can connect to an SQL server is a Windows

2009-11-24 Thread Walters, Mark
This won't work. There is no AR server for Solaris that will connect MS SQL.
If you want to use this db you'll have to use a Windows AR server. If you
stick with the Solaris AR server your db choices are Oracle, DB2, Informix or
Sybase.

Christie,

We had the same issue here. BMC support provided us with a hotfix which
involved replacing several dll files. They said that it was a memory
leak on the plugin.

Prior to this we used to go to the task manager and select the arplugin
process and do a end process tree which would restart the plugin,
whenever it was over the 1.5 GB.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I laughed out loud when that came across. I hope you learned your lesson.

One of the more interesting responses I've seen :)

Re: ARPlugin.exe growing uncontrollably

2009-11-24 Thread Sabyson Fernandes
Christie,

We had the same issue here. BMC support provided us with a hotfix which
involved replacing several dll files. They said that it was a memory leak on
the plugin.

Prior to this we used to go to the task manager and select the arplugin process
and do a end process tree which would restart the plugin, whenever it was over
the 1.5 GB.

Hope this helps.
Saby

Subject: ARPlugin.exe growing uncontrollably

**
Hi All - I am having to reboot my production server
because the ARPlugin.exe is growing to over 1.5 GBs of RAM. I have a
ticket into BMC but they are not sure why this is happening. I thought I
would see if anyone here has an idea why this is happening. We went live
with ITSM 7 at the end of June and have stayed pretty out of the box. We
haven't implemented the CMDB yet and only do a little with AIE. I am
wondering if this is happening because we are trying to use the ad hoc
report tool quite a bit. Any ideas?

Re: Integrating SRM with Blackberry

2009-11-24 Thread John Sundberg

I do not believe SRM can natively work with the BlackBerry.
You may be able to buy external products for that functionality -
check out Aeroprise.

However,
Kinetic Request is built on ARS -- and takes a different strategy --
you might want to check it out.

Kinetic Request has worked with the BlackBerry for 4 years now.
And, also with the iPhone - since the day it came out.
http://www.kineticdata.com/Products/KineticRequest/index.html

Use your BlackBerry/iPhone and fill out:
http://www.kineticdata.com/AboutUs/RequestInformation.html
(The above is driven by Kinetic Request)

I will say - it is most common to do approvals with a BlackBerry for
Kinetic Request. Probably the next most common is to check off work-
orders in the field. However, not so much activity in making Requests
-- but you can.

So -- if you are in the request management market -- know your options
-- make the choice that is right for you.

Oh FYI -- Kinetic Request also won the award "Innovator of the year"
at the WWRUG in Las Vegas.
