on Linux next month.

I documented the upgrade of our test environment. It didn't go the most
smoothly, and I couldn't have completed it without BMC Support's help.
We had to manually update some of the table structures. Perhaps this
is because we totally skipped 7.0, 7.1, 7.5, 7.6, and 8.0. We also
had a duplicate index on one table, according to the data dictionary,
so we had to delete it.

In any case, my last technical challenge was to get single sign on
working. I never tried to get it working before, and I thought it
would be a bonus if I could get it working as part of this upgrade.

I did a lot of google searching, and I saw a few other posts where
other people were trying to accomplish what I wanted to do. Either
nobody responded, or some people gave some general pointers, or
javasystemsolutions.com chimed in to tout their product.

In any case, after a long 14 hour day, I finally got it working.
We have the following environment:
Linux RHEL 6.6 / Apache 2.2 / Tomcat 7.0 / mod_ssl /
   mod_auth_cas 1.0.9 / areasso 7.0

If there is any interest, I will write up a guide on how to implement
SSO with CAS and share it with the list.

Great discussion, Doug!

Everyone,

I thought I would share a few thoughts….

We do listen to requests and feedback and often react to it. However,
sometimes things are not as simple as they seem…

Let’s take this case as an example. You can have three types of
things that you are looking at when in Best Practice mode:

1)An unaltered definition that is just being read through from the
base – no delete is possible here

2)An overlaid definition that is present in base – delete of the
overlay is possible but not of the base definition

3)A custom object that does not exist in base – delete here deletes
the object

All of the focus of the thread has been on the wording of the Delete
operation and should it be called Delete Overlay.

I actually think that the concept is a good one. However, be aware
that there really needs to be three states for the menu choice:

1)It is disabled as it is not possible

2)Delete Overlayto emphasize you are only deleting the overlay and
not the object

3)Delete to emphasize it is a custom object and you are REALLY
deleting the object not an overly

Then, let’s look at the next topic – I believe you can multi-select
items and then pick Delete…. What should the menu choice be if you
select three items, one of each of the above categories, and then
select Delete? Should it be disabled because one is just a read
through? Should it say Delete Overlay because one is an overlay?
Should it say Delete because one is a custom object? More complexity…
Does it say Delete and Delete Overlay? Do we remove the multi-select
(of if it is not there, never add it)?

I am not objecting to the request and in fact think there is value in
the request, but just be aware that there is sometimes more to the
issue than it may at first seem.

Now, there are icons that indicate if something is an overlay, a
custom object, or a base object bleeding through so you can tell which
is which – but does it need to be more?

And, about the not being in base mode discussion….

I would agree and argue that you should not be in base mode.

In fact, I would go so far as to suggest that you should have most –
all the day to day Admin logins and any special access Admin user –
LOCKED to the overlay layer. Check the documentation, it allows you
to lock an Admin into a specific layer. They can go into the other
layer (well, this depends on version, current versions let you in read
only to other layers, but older versions blocked them entirely) but no
change is possible. Doing this guarantees that there are no mistakes
and that no one is accidentally in the wrong mode and making changes.
(and yes, BMC should lock our Admins to base to prevent accidentally
creating custom objects in the overlay layer)

You always have some super Admin who is not locked to Base in case you
do need to go into that layer. They could also change the rights of
an Admin to remove the restriction locking them to Best Practice –
there is logic that doesn’t allow an Admin locked to a layer to change
the permissions to override that lock.

Note that you can use this same ability to also lock an Admin to an
undefined layer so that they can make no structure changes at all but
can access data. This is good for a data access but read only
definition Admin or for Admins used for integrations that only do data
so that they cannot be used to change structures regardless of what
calls are made.

So, we have deviated from the original topic a bit.

I just wanted to note that not having action taken is not always a
sign of disagreement or of ignoring. Sometimes the problem is simply
more complex than it seems nad more work needs to be done to make a
decision. Then, there is the entire balancing of requests to pick the
ones that make the most difference. Please keep the ideas and
requests coming as without them being shared, there is almost 0 chance
of them being done as we don’t know about them.

Despite being comfortable with the labels personally, I do think there
is a point to all this.

But until that becomes a reality, just know that when you are in the
best practice mode, the deletion of base objects is not allowed by the
tool. So there is nothing to fear there.

It’s only when you switch the mode to Base Development that you risk
loosing stuff.

As a practice, YOU SHOULD NEVER be in the Base Development mode if you
are using ITSM or any of the OTB Remedy applications. It offers you no
benefit at all to be in the Base Development mode, UNLESS you are on
one of the following exceptional cases:

Lisa,

We do the very thing that you're asking for in Spoon. It requires a
couple of lookups from asset people and the dependency form, but the
output is to a spreadsheet with one line per CI (with each association
on the same line).

Once you get the hang of spoon, you'll find other ways of using it.

A non-trivial view should do it. You might need to add a proc or two

It’s trickier if you do need class and/or people specific attributes.
You’d have to devise a syntax for a “Used By” string.

A simple Meta-Update script would do it do (about 1 hr dev/test
time). You’d have a repeatable process you could run on any CI subset
at any time.

Meta-Update required absolutely zero server changes and goes through

As the operations that you specify will only run on this server, you
can allocate system resources through configuration to target the
operations that will occur on this server than that of the other
servers i.e. more memory to CMDB and RE that the other servers

Ideally you would allocate more memory to this server to accommodate

Yeah, we're stuck on an Atrium upgrade from 8.1.00 to 8.1.02 also.

The first time, admin server upgraded fine, but non-admin server
reported that there was no Atrium server to upgrade. One week later, we
tried again, but this time we got an upgrade version incompatibility on
the admin server.

I've been working with BMC on it, but all we find is the correct
'upgrade from' which is version 8.1.00.

The weird thing is that we had db copies and vm snapshots to roll back
to, so there shouldn't have been anything left over from the upgrade
attempt.

Tami, I've not had that problem, but I've had a few others with the
8.1.02 install packages. One thing that Support told me was that they
are using a new Installer technology for the first time in this release.

One issue I had is that the AR System install won't accept a DB name
with any special characters in it, even though neither AR System nor
SQL mind them.

Also dealing with an issue with the Atrium Core install, which leaves
out an entire /bin directory (among possibly other things).

8.1.02 upgrade test...Sybase-Server-Name:

2014-10-27 Thread Rick Phillips

Hi,

We're doing our own test of the upgrade installers (seems there's alot
of that going on). I have a copy of the prod db and a copy of the prod
app server (vm) in my dev environment, and have updated all the server
references in the new app server vm (i.e., ar.cfg, armonitor.cfg, and
registry, among others). When I got ready to update the server refs in
the db, I couldn't get ARS to start, and there were errors like this in
the arerror.log:

/[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or
access denied. (SQL Server 17)//
//SQL database is still not available -- continuing to attempt
connection (ARNOTE 591)//

//The SQL database operation failed. (ARERR 552)/

I was able to log into the db via SQL Management Studio with the ARAdmin
account, and successfully execute a select statement against user_x, so
I contacted the dba who suggested trying to create an ODBC connection
just to test the connection to the db. He said to ensure that the
server name was defined as myserver, port, which connected fine. At
that point I went back to the ar.cfg and armonitor for the umpteenth
time, and a colleague suggested adding the port number to the
Sybase-Server-Name parameter, so that the line in the ar.cfg looked like
Sybase-Server-Name: myserver,1234

The server started right up, no errors in the error.log, so my question is:

None of the other servers in any of our environments needed the port
added, the old dev server didn't need it (and I'm told that that vm is
turned off), and I don't recall ever seeing a port id in the
Sybase-Server-Name: line.

Any idea, why the ar.cfg needs it now?

Thanks,

rp

8.1.01 Approval Engine question...

Hi,

When a emergency CRQ is created, there are a set number of approvers
generated, all for the close-down phase. If a change manager adds a
single ad-hoc approver during the implementation phase, the system
creates an additional signature record for all approvers; so the number
of approvers goes from 6 close-down approvers to 13 total approvers (7
new implementation approvers including the intended ad-hoc approver).

Has anyone seen this before?

Ditto for us on most of what you've said. We have a brand new 8.1
implementation, and are p2. Most of the issues are reported by our IE
users, and we're looking forward to a hotfix or patch to resolve these
same issues.

I didn't want to hijack this email thread for my own issues but
hopefully Suresh can get some benefit from what I've run into as well.

We have been on ARS 8.1 for a couple of months but just upgraded ITSM
to 8.1 (including the two patches) as of this past weekend. In
testing we ran into the Caught Exception errors that Suresh ran into,
but the ITSM patches seemed to have addressed most of those. The
problem now is basically instability. Tomcat itself keeps crashing,
so I upgraded it from patch 32 to patch 37 tonight to see if that helps.

There have also been a never-ending stream of Mid Tier issues, but of
very low intensity, from 7.6.4 on with Internet Explorer. My
understanding is that Internet Explorer has defects in it that cause
it to not correctly refresh cache, and the way the Mid Tier is
designed that becomes a big issue. However, we also have run into
issues with 7.6.4 that are worse on 8.1 with specific user's cache on
the Mid Tier becoming corrupt somehow and generating errors. The only
way to resolve those is to flush the cache on the Mid Tier, but doing
so messes up a small but vocal percentage of other people who have to
clear their IE browser cache.

So based on the suggestion below, I am planning on looking into the
Mid Tier hotfix. I'll open a ticket with BMC tomorrow if my system is
still unstable after the Tomcat upgrade and try to get that hotfix but
I have an I.T. form of PTSD because our implementation of 7.6.4 a
couple years ago was delayed a few months due to BMC support not being
helpful with Mid Tier issues (which resulted in a custom Mid Tier
patch for us, which so far hadn't been necessary on 8.1.)

So with all that said, I tried to guess the 8.1 path on the FTP site
below but couldn't find one that worked. I also tried searching their
Knowledge Base because I often find hotfixes in there, including
several that have gone in with my 8.1 install.

Thanks,

Interestingly, BMC makes it next to impossible to actually get
hotfixes without waiting on their support. Do you know any alternate

require a U.N. Resolution worth of log files and config files in the

What is the patch version of ARS , Midtier and Tomcat

Apply Patch 02 for ARS, Mid tier Hotfix (Dec072013 ) and Patch 36 for

We had few issues with ARS 8.1 un-patched version.

8.1 DMT issue failure to import data...

2013-10-08 Thread Rick Phillips

Hi,

I'm trying to import new products using the 8.1 DMT.

The job hangs fairly early, and the arerror.log shows:
Mon Oct 07 23:52:44 2013 390634 : Error in plugin : Either job

exist Or User Remedy Application Service is not allowed to access job

4554)
Mon Oct 07 23:52:44 2013 Application-Delete-Entry DMT:Action
0006905

If I try to delete the record in DMT:Action manually, I receive this error:
Error in plugin : Either job Product_Catalog(Object Id null, Directory
Id 000) does not exist Or User Rick Phillips is not allowed
to access job Product_Catalog (ARERR 8753)

I've done some research, and found a lot of material to review regarding
plug-in errors (including one I posted earlier this year, but that
resolution doesn't work this time around). This has worked before, as
I've imported all of the foundation data using DMT (although it was
month's ago).

Any ideas? This issue is holding up UAT.

2013-10-08 Thread Rick Phillips

Carl,

Thanks for the response.

Your assessment was precisely what our problem was, although in our case
both the jobs and transformation were missing completely! Not sure what
happened there, but we imported the correct job/trans for the import
that I was doing (product catalog), and successfully completed the
import via DMT.

Next task is to determine how to move the remainder of the ITSM
(foundation?) jobs/trans to complete the set in spoon.

Not sure what happened to the original jobs/trans as I completed a
foundation data import via DMT as late as a couple of months ago.

Thanks again,

Rick

I have had issue in the past with corrupt Jobs/Transformations in the
repository that threw the below types of errors (repository was corrupt).
Basically there was a mismatch between where the catalog points to for the
Job/Transformation and when it attempts to load the Job it cannot find it in
the catalog.

Check your Jobs/Transformations are available in the Spoon client for the
data you are loading and also check the AI Jobs form (UDM:Repoisitory:Job)
for the correct ID of the Job/Transform and that it lines up with what is
being called in the DMT Tool i.e. when you run the DMT Job (DMT:Job), it
calls the AI Job (Job/Transform) via an ID in the repository.

The import/export of the Spoon tool loads the Job/Transform into the
repository as an attachment - these can sometimes not be present or corrupt
and the ID's between the DMT Job (yes confusing as BMC are sharing
terminology) and actual repository AI Job do not match.

Re: Anyone have a list (or know of a list) of plugins...

2013-09-23 Thread Rick Phillips

Thanks to everyone who replied.

What started this was a plugin error that was due to a C plugin that was
listed in the ar.cfg with a port of . Not sure how that happened,
but, it did. Normally, it's easy enough to see a plugin alias with a
port of , and think, that's a java plugin; the see another plugin
alias with a port that matches one that you've defined for C plugins
(see Plugin-Port: /whatever you've defined here/), and think, that's a
C plugin; but, in my case, it wasn't so easy.

So, I thought I'd see if there was a list somewhere that differentiated
between the two (but it doesn't look like there is).

Thanks, anyway!

For getting just the list, the ar.conf file should be more than
enough for
plugins used by the AR Server and applications installed on it.

You could also probably try to identify most of their types from the
configuration parameter name related to each of the plugin - I
think most of
them have the type in the configuration parameter name..

when a BMC person (or two) try to convince our organization
that by using overlays customizations are now configurations.
The impact, maintenance, testing and documentation needs do
not change with overlays. Sure BMC code will not
intentionally change your overlay or custom object like in the
past when there was only one object layer but it all still has
to work together.
 2. There was an oversight in 7.6.04 Dev Studio where the option to
convert from unmodified to custom was left out. There is a thread
from last year where Doug Mueller explained and gave some options.
I would think it has been added to 7.6.04 in a patch but if not
my recommendation is to upgrade Dev Studio to 8.1 since you will
need to do that at some point. You will then have the option to
convert unmodified to custom before the server upgrade.
 3. If I remember correctly the rapp service was called via run

the objects that call it. Chances are since you don't have SLA
there are probably only a handful of places that use it and you
won't likely miss it. I seem to remember there was one or two
things about HD pre 6 that used it outside of SLA.
 4. That sounds reasonable. Open Windows was one of the most frequent
uses for macros. It has been so long since I have done this
process that what you describe sounds familiar :)
 5. Technically they are buttons but you will have to adjust how they
are presented in the view. If you create a Vertical Navigation
field you can click Click here to attach orphaned items. This
will show your menu bar buttons. If you want to make them
individual buttons without a Nav field I am pretty sure there is a
way but can't completely remember right now.
  * Ok, this was bugging me so I figured out how to do it (and it
is super simple). Select the menu field from the Outline
list, under Display Properties change Display Type from Menu
to Button.
 6. The User Tool is not phased out for AR System 7.6.04, just ITSM
7.6.04. You can still use WUT with a 7.6.04 AR System Server and
non-ITSM applications. This configuration will be supported until
7.6.04 falls out of support. This is why we are sticking with ARS
7.6.04 for our Help Desk/custom environment and not moving to ARS
8.x. I am willing to be you will be fine with WUT 7.6.04 and AR
System Server 8,1. It is not a supported configuration but it
will work. All of us who are using WUT 7.6.04 with 8.0/8.1 raise
our hands.

Note that in overlaid forms, you have two records with different id for each

There is also a form called AR System Metadata: arschema that you can use
with any client instead of direct SQL. It is just a view form based upon the

Note that in overlaid forms, you have two records with different id for each
table. You might want to look at resolvedSchemaId and resolvedName instead.

There is also a form called AR System Metadata: arschema that you can use
with any client instead of direct SQL. It is just a view form based upon the
arschema table.

  It works for same version

2. By taking report( *.arx, *.xml , *.csv)
Field mapping are not same for forms in different versions.

* In 2.2 we don't have variable mapping feature as that of 7.6.

Re: SRM 7.1 to 8.1

2013-07-18 Thread Rick Phillips

Thanks, LJ.

We're not upgrading the 7.1 server, but instead have moved selected
legacy Foundation data to the new 8.1 instance (re-imported via DMT so
that we have new ID's and GUID's), and created new foundation data where
needed to address new business requirements (also imported via DMT).

So it looks like the options are:

1) Manually re-created the SRD's in the new 8.1 system, or
2) Upgrade the 7.1 system (or a clone of it), then export from the
upgraded system and import into the pre-production 8.1 system using SRM
import/export.

Parody by David J. Easter

I read ARSList and what do I see?
A lotta people cryin’ for the W-A-T
They point their crooked little fingers at Dev Studio
They’re shakin’ their heads sayin’ nothing but “No”.
It doesn’t do that and it doesn’t do this
They want to keep their Admin Tool from 1996

Get over it!
Get over it!
All this whinin’ and cryin’ and pitchin’ a fit
Get over it! Get over it!

You say you can’t develop since you switched in 7.5
But you might feel better if we keep the User Tool alive
The more I think about it old Dougie was right
Let’s drop the support, drop it tonight
You don’t wanna upgrade, want your maintenance for free
This ain’t open source – it’s B-M-C Remedy

Get over it!
Get over it!
Read the documentation, it’ll help quite a bit
Get over it! Get over it!

I yell at my screen every time you start a brand new poll
This horse is now dead, you’re out of control
You think you’re a rebel, I think you’re a troll, yeah yeah yeah

Yeah you’re draggin’ your feet - the future is here
You might as well accept it - your path is crystal clear
If you don’t adapt, we won’t keep you around

Instead of writing workflow you’d just bring our servers down
Complain about the present - you’re livin’ in the past
So come next year to WWRUG – we’ll kick your little ass!

Get over it!
Get over it!
You need 3 extra screens to make the panels all fit?
Get over it! Get over it!

Get over it!
Get over it!
Dan will throw you off the list if you don’t call it quits!
Get over it! Get over it!

fts pluginsvr_config.xml question...

2012-07-17 Thread Rick Phillips

Hi,

In the fts pluginsvr_config.xml file, what is the user defined section
for?

One of the things I'm trying to nail down is the server group
implementation for fts. The doc that I have (from BMC) states that all
fts plugins should reside on the primary server, but the collection
directories should stay on each server group member. So we:

Comment out the secondary member's fts plugin server's line from the
armonitor
In each secondary member's ar.cfg, we point to the respective fts plugin
on the primary server
Update the primary server's armonitor to include a line to start each
secondary server's fts plugin server
When the indexing begins, each fts plugin server writes to the
collection dir on the corresponding member's collection dir (or so BMC
has advised me).

Where is the parameter that tells each fts plugin server to write to the
respective member's collection dir? The only thing that looks possible
is the user defined section of the fts pluginsvr_config.xml.
Also, does anyone know if, during the indexing process, the collection
dirs are written to concurrently? My indexing process has been running
for a day, ft_pending is at 13, and primary collection dir is being
written to, and growing 21 GB, but nada on any collection dirs on
secondary member's collection dirs.

Rick

All,

I apologies for posting something to this list that is not Remedy
related. It was the only way that I could think of to contact all of
the people I have worked with in the world of Remedy.

I know that in my 16 years of working with the AR system, I have
crossed paths with a number of the members of this great list and I
just wanted to let that at 8:30am the 17th my 23 year old son will be
donating his kidney to me.

He graduated from college in December (with a degree in IT security)
he has put his life on hold and spent his time helping my wife and I
as we struggle with the loss of my kidney functions (due to some RA
meds I was on in the 90s). We do dialysis at home, so I can work
fulltime and he sees my struggles every day.

I know that we all think our children are unique and will always do
the right thing, but Andrew is the example of that. How many of us
would in truth change our lives forever for someone else? He is doing
this with humor and a desire to get his old man (me) off of that darn
dialysis machine. Words cannot describe how proud I am of him. In a
lot of ways he has set the tone on how my wife’s and I should handle
this challenge we are going through.

So if you have a minute on the morning of the 17th, think a good
thought for me and my son.

Take care and keep well,

Re: SRM 7.6.03 registering an application template with a new AOT...

2011-01-31 Thread Rick Phillips

Yes on the multi-tenancy.

I have a single INC template 'used by' 2 operating companies. I have a
single user who is a member of a support group in each of the 2
operating companies. That user has Support Group admin functional role
in each group.

From the AOT template form, with company A, the template is visible:
with company B, no template visible.

7.6.03 Data Management Tool issues converting to .csv...

2010-10-13 Thread Rick Phillips
I'm having problems getting my spreadsheets converted to .csv. I've
created a single record in the People.xls. When I run the Convert CSV
Files from the DMT, the DOS window opens, begins converting the
Company.xls, and hangs. Two windows in Excel open: Company.xls and the
CompanyConvertCSV. The Company.xls has a Visual Basic Debugger open, with
the error defined at the last line:

Workbooks.Open Filename:=def_path + Company.xls
'
'
For i = 2 To Sheets.Count
Sheets(i).Activate
Rows(1:2).Delete Shift:=xlUp
Range(A2, ActiveCell.SpecialCells(xlLastCell)).Select
Selection.Sort Key1:=Range(B2), Order1:=xlAscending,
Header:=xlNo, OrderCustom:=1, MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom,
DataOption1:=xlSortNormal

I can walk the entire process by manually closing the Excel windows (the
process runs on the next Excel file, then hangs again, etc.), but I need to
fix this.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks,

Rick

Marcelo,

You may want to check out the 7.6.03 .pdf, 160651_CDMClassedMapping (I got
is with my 7.6.03 download).

In it DNS servers are categorized (prodcats) as: SoftwareSoftware

Not sure that this will help you, but it may be something of value to you

We are managing DNS changes, but not classifying them correctly. I wasn’t
sure if others were tracking these. You’re correct, since they are not
objects it is difficult to add them as CIs.

We are not on 7.6 yet, just wanted to see how others are doing with
Release thus far.. I remember lightly covering it in ITSM 7.5 training.

** Well, you are obviously managing DNS changes, so that means that there
needs to be some way of classifying them. However, they aren't
technically objects, so that makes them difficult to manage as CIs, unless
you want to manage them as server attributes or something. So it would
seem that having some categorization around them for the CM module would
probably do the trick.

As far as Release goes, it has it's place, but I think if you can make it
work with Changes and Tasks without having to twist or compress the
process, you're probably fine without Release. If you find that you have
large projects that need to be managed and scheduled at multiple sites or
on multiple timelines, having a Release encompassing several RFCs, which
can still have Tasks subordinate to them, is probably the way to go.

Problem with web reporting and Date fields

2010-08-04 Thread Rick Phillips
ARS 7.5 p 5/~11542
SQL 2005
Tomcat 5.5.28
Java 1.5.022
IE browsers 6 and 8

Has anyone seen problems with directing web reports to the screen in either
.rpt or .csv format, and the date fields
not rendering? Our reports show the date field headings, but no values for
DATE fields and any field type that
follows (we've moved the DATE fields to the end of the report).

If we direct the reports to a file, there is no failure.
If we report from the UT, there is no failure.
The .csv reports directed to the screen display an error in the browser,
Illegal Date Style 4

I've deleted the date field, and replaced it with a new one with the same db id.
I've deleted the date field, and replaced it with a new one with a different db
id.
There is no change.

I've created new reports; no change. Two out of three servers have this issue
(all in dev env.)

Obviously we're working around it by not directing the reports to the screen,
but...

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks,

Rick

but enabling the Search Bar from the field view, Accessible Menu Items list
(where it's called Advanced Search).

Win2003 R2, Ora9i with 10G client.

When installing ARS 7.0.1p2, I'm receiving the error:
22:26:16 -[ERROR]: Couldn't create the Demo user.
22:26:24 -[ERROR]: Failed to create a valid Admin user. This
installation cannot complete importing of forms or data. A valid Admin
user will need to be created and forms and data manually imported.

This error occurred after the installation of the AR System was
completed.
To correct this error, import the sample applications from the samples
subdirectory.
22:46:29 Done importing forms.
22:46:29 -[ERROR]: Failed to complete AR Server installation.

I know that I can correct this by following the instructions listed,
but I am creating documention for an installation process; what I
really need is an error free installation.

I can connect to the db via SQLPlus as ARAdmin, and by using OEM I can
view the contents of the arschema table (User and Group are notably
missing).

Any clues where I should begin looking?

tia,

Rick

2007-04-18 Thread Rick Phillips
L.J.,

Thanks,

I was able to install filemon and found two things:

The most recent .obf file is updated (now at over 138MB) when I
perform a search in Remedy Dev Plus 6.3 p1492 on Admin Tool 7.0.1 p1
Filemon shows:
path = C:\WINNT\system32\java.exe
command line = java -Xmx256m -cp C:\Program Files\AR System
\ARAdmin7.0.1\appexplorer60.jar;C:\Program Files\AR System
\ARAdmin7.0.1\jgraph.jar;C:\Program Files\AR System
\ARAdmin7.0.1\arapi60.jar;C:\Program Files\AR System
\ARAdmin7.0.1\jakarta-regexp-1.3.jar;C:\Program Files\¨q

Does this shed any light on the problem?

I'm at a loss, too. I checked the email service, but it's set to manual,

I checked the Windows Event Viewer to see if I could match the create date

I guess we'll have to wait to see if anyone else has an idea.

Thanks to everyone; here's what I found: the .obf files are not
deleted when RDP is closed. They are not deleted when the Admin Tool
is closed; nor are they deleted if the machine is rebooted. Bug
maybe, but real pain when there is no more disk space and apps begin
crashing.

I have a ticket opened with Remedy Support; I'll see what they say.

Re: ARS 7.0.01 upgrade problems

2007-02-22 Thread Rick Phillips
I had a slightly different variation: in going from 5.1.2 to 7.0.1,
we had to stop at 7.0.0 first. This was due to a known error (per
support). We also had problems with forms displaying fields that the
db did not have. We exported the form, deleted the form, re-imported
the form, and thus were able to sync ARS and the DB in that the number
(and type) of fields listed in the admin tool (or the .def file)
matched what was returned via SQL Plus.

I just finished working on a CMDB 1.1 patch 4 installation that twice
failed due to incomplete installers downloaded from the support site.

The process was painful because support kept saying it was something we
did on the original upgrade. And after the usual sending of megatons of
stuff and over a week later it was determined that you needed to stop at v6
  first.

What happened to us was that all the new fields on the user and groups
forms appeared on the client screen like they were there, but in actuality
they were not in the database. If you went into the admin tool they were
there, so you moved a field or even added another field and saved ... which
should have corrected any issue of not being the same ... NOT ... they were
still not in the database. Unexplainable except that once we started over
and did the extra step everything went fine.

It was frustrating and aggrevating. It took over 3 weeks to finally get

waiting for that since last August. Worse than a Chinese puzzle!

laptop. I installed the Oracle 10g client and used this as instructed. I
could never get the service to start. It would always time out. I watched
what Remedy was up to through Enterprise Manager and could see it talking to
the database, presumably trying to build its cache. It would keep starting
more and more connections. It was driving me crazy until I was advised by a
colleague that you cannot upgrade from 5.1.2 to 7.0.1. You have to go
  through version 7.0.0 first.

I don't know what the problem is though. I have now done an install of 7.0.0
over my 7.0.1 and it starts ok. I have yet to upgrade this to 7.0.1 though
through lack of free time. I also want to restore the database back to 5.1.2
and try the upgrade to 7.0.0 and then 7.0.1 to see what the result is. But
have yet to find the time!

Thanks for the quick reply. I pasted a copy of tnsnames.ora in the
new 10g \Network\Admin folder, but am still getting the same error.
tnsping shows the correct use of sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora, so that
  looks good.

Not sure what to try next.

   Hello all,

   Windows 2000 AS
   Ora 9i
   ARS 5.1.2 upgraded to 7.0.1

I installed the 10g client, but am unable to start arserver following
the 7.0.1 upgrade. Found no errors in the install log, but found the
   following in the arerror.log

   Mon Feb 05 11:13:38 2007 ORA-06401: NETCMN: invalid driver
   designator

   Mon Feb 05 11:13:38 2007 390600 : Cannot initialize contact with SQL

   Mon Feb 05 11:13:38 2007 Stop server

   Mon Feb 05 11:13:38 2007 390600 : AR System server terminated -- fatal
   error encountered (ARNOTE 21)

I can connect via SQL Plus as ARAdmin.

I have my old 9i client installed, and tnsnames.ora is in the 9i path.
Was the 10g client installation supposed to create a new or modify the
   old tnsnames.ora file?

Re: Import ARERROR 405 ARS 5.1.2 on Display Only forms... (part 2)

2006-12-15 Thread Rick Phillips
Jason,

I have a .def file from a known good 5.1.2/HD 5.5 server (heavily
customized), and I need to Migrate that file to a new destination
server. The two servers should be mirror images (from the OS up) with
the exception of form data.

The migration was successful with the exception of the forms listed
earlier (plus a few DO forms; Remedy Requester-New Request, etc.), some
menus (no suprise here since forms failed), and a handful of filters.

My attempt to import those forms individually via the admin tool also
failed, hence the posting here (parts 1 and 2) with the attendant
errors. Clean up is not an option, and new views were not added (as
suggested by Jennifer-thanks).

I'm working on getting a second computer so I can see both systems
concurrently (the production system is not available to me). I know
that I can install multiple AR servers, but can't do at this point in
the project.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Import ARERROR 405 ARS 5.1.2 on Display Only forms... (part 2)

2006-12-14 Thread Rick Phillips
I am attempting to import over a dozen heavily modified HD 5.5 forms
from a .def file onto another 5.1.2/HD 5.5 server, overwriting a clean
HD 5.5 install.

Rec'ing the same ARERROR 405:

A core definition from the definition file is incorrect: (1) : :
(ARERR 405)
A core definition from the definition file is incorrect: (7) : :
(ARERR 405)
A core definition from the definition file is incorrect: (7) : :
(ARERR 405)

on over a dozen core HD forms (SHR:Categorization,
SHR:ConsolidatedList, etc.)

Any ideas why the errors? Why an error twice on 'status' (7)?

Any help appreciated,

Rick

Re: Import ARERROR 405 ARS 5.1.2 on Display Only forms... (part 2)

2006-12-14 Thread Rick Phillips
Jennifer,

Thanks.

First, I'm importing an entire HD 5.5 app that I inherited, so I have
little to no history on changes that were made.

Second, it's heavily customized, so anything could have happened on the
way to its current state.

Third, most of the app was imported successfully; most of the errors
were with forms/menus.

I could restore the 'Status' fields on the original server, perform the
import, then change the 'Status' fields back on the destination server
so that they work with workflow, but I'm not sure how to make a
'generic' copy.

In any event, I'm trying to avoid recreating:
CHG:Change
CHG:Task
HPD:Solutions
SHR:ApplicationGroups
SHR:Association
SHR:Bulletin
SHR:Categorization
SHR:ConsolidatedList
SHR:Contact
SHR:Location
SHR:People
SHR:PersonalPreferences
SHR:Survey
SHR:Template
SHRCFG:ConfigTmpIndex
SLA:Measurement
SLA:Rule Event Occurrence

(I'm sitting here contemplating just how painful that would be!!)

Anyway,

Thanks again.

First two things to check, Rick, did you tell your import to Import In
Place or Replace Objects on the Destination Server?

Second thing, I am guessing there are two things it doesn't like about
your Status field--as if you have changed two qualities, perhaps your
permissions and attributes. Have you ever exported your definition
files, mucked with the definition files as text, and reimported them?
It might not have given you an error at the time, but that could cause
it to blow up on the new server.

Since it's throwing up all over your Request ID field, you have some
sort of ick that is messing up all your fields. Perhaps copy the form,
make the copy as generic as possible, export the form, then try to
import it. This may be a situation where it's just easier to recreate
the form on the new server.

How many forms is this happening on, and have any of your imports
 succeeded?
