Question: How to improve AIS performance

2013-11-14 Thread Victor
Hello Listers,

Are there any parameter tuning that can be done to enhace the performance of
AIS?. We have performance issues when multiple users are performing
simulations or when the CI the simulation is performed on has got several
relationships/levels of relationships.
Any Idea how to improve performance?

Thanks for your inputs.

AR Server 8.0
Windows 2008
Tomcat 6
MS SQL 2008
Atrium CMDB 8.0

Hi Ryan,

Thank you very much for directing me to the KB article.

Unfortunately the situations described in the article do not apply to my
environment. It is also not a performance issue.

Thanks for trying.

Personally I haven't used it a lot as I was able to resolve most of my user
cache problems by altering stuff in the DB directly (which is not recommended
way of doing it) because I felt it was easier and I had more control of
whatever the issue was if I knew exactly what was wrong.

I am working with a vendor on a license monitoring tool and he thinks that some

arreload might work.

However, I remember doing this in the past on 7.6.1 and causing issues with my

So any ideas, or is arreload -u User safe to use on a 7.6.4 (arserver/itsm)

Hi,

Did you check the overlays point of view. You are moving objects from a non

You might need to refer to the migrator doc for this.

Atrium SSO Configuration Issues

2013-01-27 Thread Victor
Hello Listers,

I'm trying to configure Atrium SSO for AR System Integration.

I followed the instructions and performed the tasks listed on
https://docs.bmc.com/docs/display/public/sso80/Configuring+the+BMC+Atrium+Single+Sign-
On+server+for+AR+System+integration.
I can see the AR users and groups in Subjects part, I can even successfully
log in using https://AtriumSSOFQDNHostName:port/atriumsso?realm=BmcRealm and
relevant AR system username and password.
I configured the Atrium SSO Integration tab of Server Information from AR
System Administration Console.
When I tried to log in to AR system using
http://MidtierFQDNHostName:port/arsys I received the following error message:

BMCSSG1511E: Failed to access agent attribute (sunidentityserverdevicestatus)
from server (org.json.JSONException:

My ../debug/Authentication file shows

Hello Ripu Daman,

Thanks for your response.

Actually I followed the same steps from the link provided in my post earlier.
I even managed to run a successful health check.

Every first attempt to connet using http://MidtierFQDNHostName:port/arsys
results in the given error message.

Consecutive attemps produce ARERR [623] - Authentication failed error
message

 Subject: Atrium SSO Configuration Issues

 Hello Listers,

I'm trying to configure Atrium SSO for AR System Integration.

I followed the instructions and performed the tasks listed on
 https://docs.bmc.com/docs/display/public/sso80/Configuring+the+BMC+Atrium+S
 ingle+Sign- On+server+for+AR+System+integration.
I can see the AR users and groups in Subjects part, I can even successfully
 log in using https://AtriumSSOFQDNHostName:port/atriumsso?realm=BmcRealm
and relevant AR system username and password.
I configured the Atrium SSO Integration tab of Server Information from AR
 System Administration Console.
When I tried to log in to AR system using
http://MidtierFQDNHostName:port/arsys I received the following error
 message:

 My ../debug/Authentication file shows

Can someone please help me to resolve the issue?

Re: Atrium SSO Configuration Issues

2013-01-27 Thread Victor
Hi Ripu,

Thank you very much for this.

I missed the first step about configuring external authentication in the AR
System server. After doing this I was able to complete Atrium SSO
configuration for AR System Integration and use
http://MidtierFQDNHostName:port/arsys to access the application.

Thank you very much for your help

Best regards,

Victor

Hi Jason and Victor and others,

One thing that I noticed about V8 is that I think the default for the
maximum stack of filters is still a very high 10,000. The trouble with
having such a high limit is that you can have your system just run out of
resources eg. stack space, before that limit is reached. I would have
thought a limit to nested filters at around 25 or 50 should be plenty. If
you have it set to this limit and you find that a perfectly well behaved
process is still hitting the limit I'd be surprised, and you could just up
the limit. I suspect in the examples here there is a bug or some bad data
that is causing the system to be a lot more recursive than was intended.
You would probably see a bit of a spike on resources such as cpu and memory
 if a process does loop.

In the old days we didn't have a filter stack limit, just a total number of
filters. The trouble with that is that with the large number of filters
that something like HPD:Help Desk had you could hit pretty high limits in
just normal use. Alternatively you could have a tightly recursive set of
filters that used up the stack without hitting the filter limit.

If you can replicate the problem it would be a good idea to have server
logging on to see what is happening. You may not see the log immediately
prior to the system crash but you will definitely be able to see a trend
before hand. Your log will be pretty full if you are running out of stack.
If you have a low filter stack limit then you will see an error thrown and
won't have a crash to worry about.

WUT not functioning properly on Remedy ITSM 7.6.04

2012-11-10 Thread Victor
Hello Listers,

I am new to Remedy ITSM 7.6.04 and yes, I know User Tool has been deprecated
but I want to find out if the problems I am experiencing are typical (or maybe
someone found a workaround) or I am just doing something wrong.

After logging in through WUT and clicking the Home Page link - I get the image
shown in WUT_Home.png. The same thing happened when I tried to Asset
Management or Change Management Consoles.

When I tried to access Atrium Core Console I recieved ARERR 9217 - however on
returning to the home page using the link provided by the error page I was
able to use the tool as normal.

Is this a tool bug or expected behaviour? - Needless to say, the web client is
functioning as expected.

I just counted the number of votes again.
Using raw numbers of the number of registrations on the list,
1% voted. In other words, under 50 votes.

Let’s see if we beat that on comments about keeping it before you
get too excited about it returning.

The only reason I am ending it is because I think the level of voting
 reflects the level of interest;
and reflects that the arslist and participation in it is now for the most

IF there is a really big, and by big I mean say, 10% of the list,
That sends emails or creates a really long thread about continuing it,
I might be convinced to bring it back.

But with 2.5% voting, although they usually reach the right conclusion,
It says to me that the ARSlist is a commodity now and there isn’t that much
 interest in
 The Award.

To Clarify and somewhat repeat what I said at the conference:

There is no longer a separate session for the ARSlist Awards, it is part of
an opening session dedicated to all awards

The ARSlist carries on, and for now as “just an email list”

Not all logs - just Active Link loggings.

From your user tool klick Tools - Options and select the Logging tab.
Check Active Links from the Client section and provide a file name where the
logs should be written in Log File Path field.

Since the changes are visible in BMC.CORE forms I am suspecting that the menu
is actually activated by an Active Link that is not attached to AST Forms

I chked the same in user tool and it is not reflecting in ast formss

But the ast forms are modified(modified datw got changed)

I am not sure if you need to keep the customers in a special class.

Have you considered creating organizations for these external companies
within your company and putting the customers in appropriate organization
in your CTM:People form? This will enable you to relate customers to
relevant services which in turn will enable you to automate the
notification procedure.

Other alternative could be multi-tenancy ...

Since these attributes need to apply to all further subclasses I
don't think creating a custom class is a good idea. I have added a few
attributes myself to Base Element without any issues. The time needed
for the attributes to propagate to all existing subclasses depends on
your system and the number of subclasses you have. You still need to
modify the AST forms for the new attributes to be available in the
required classes.

John,
Thanks for your recommendation. That custom class you mention should
be a subclass of Base Element (BE), right?

I´m asking that because I don’t see how a custom subclass of Base
Element can propagate attributes to all existing subclasses in CDM.

I was thinking creating a custom namespace and adding attributes in
BE but stored in custom namespace.

Alejandro,
I'd recommend you do not add them to Base Element. Instead create
your own custom Class and add those attributes to that class.
Otherwise, your next upgrade will be a nightmare.

CMDB 7.6.04

ITSM 7.6.04
I need to add about ten (10) attributes (common to all kind of CIs)
to BaseElement.

I’ve read some threads (dated about 2009) recommending to NOT ADD
attributes in Base Element Class, because of known errors in Asset –
CMDB Sync process.

What’s your experience about that? Understanding CDM Model is
based in CIM Model I think there shouldn’t be problems in adding
fields to Base Element class.

Believe me if I’m telling you I’ve reviewed all BaseElement
attributes from BMC.CORE and BMC.AM namespaces and I have no match for
these 10 attributes required.

I guess a known issue could be extense time you may have to wait
after saving changes in CDM, because custom attributes in Base Element
must be propagated to all subclasses.

How to configure BMC Atrium Core

2011-02-27 Thread Victor
Hello Listers,

2 questions regarding Atrium Explorer:
- Is there any way to configure Atrium Explorer so that a CI parents are
displayed by default (instead of CI children) when Explore CI button is
pressed from Asset Management Module?
- What are the qualifications/parameters (if doable) needed to be passed with
URL in a browser's address field for Atrium Explorer to display widget
containing a CI parents (instead of CI children)?

Any suggestions please.

Are these updates available on BMC sites? Can someone point me to the right

Export it from the User tool and instead of saving it as a regular arx

A support group is not a change type group. It seems that for the role

I created a computed change type group, added this support group to the

It worked!.

If you don't want to pay for VMWare then use Microsoft Virtual PC.

If you don't have OS licenses try looking at Microsoft Action Pack (MAPS)

When I last looked you could use Oracle as a developer for free. I think MS

You will also need Remedy server licenses but the pain of getting them for

I gave up on 32 bit laptop recently as the VMs get quite big and really
need more RAM than a 32 bit system can give them.

I use VMWare Server v2.0 which is a freeware - you only need to register to
obtain serial numbers. For database server I use SQL server 2005 Express which
is also free.

You only need OS and ITSM licenses. For OS you could use MAPS as suggested by
Peter and trial licences for ITSM can be obtained through your vendor

Automatic logon to a display form

2010-06-07 Thread Victor
Hello Listers,

This is the scenario:
I want to give users a defined link (say: http://My_form). On clicking at this
link the user is logged on to AR System using a predefined login and password -
and a predefined display form is opened. The details of the login is hidden
from the user and the (predefined)user is logged out as soon as the form is
closed.
Any hint (or a push to the appropriate documentations) on how this could be
accomplished?

ARSystem 7.5 with ITSM 7.6 patch 001 on windows 2003, MS SQL 2005 and Tomcat
midtier.

Thanks in advance

Thanks very much for your suggestion - I'm a newbie when it comes to java.

The point is that I'm using the standard BMC-provided jdbc drivers and not a

Has anyone managed to use federation interface in Atrium CMDB 7.6?

Problem defining icons for a class

Hello Listers,

I'm having problem defining icons for instances of a class

I did as instructed in Defining icons for a class section of
Atrium CMDB Administrator guide. If I use a selection attribute to
define ComponentQual the related icon is displayed in Atrium

receive the corresponding icon in Atrium Explorer (e.g
$OwnerName$=Test).
Is anyone having the same problem or am I doing something wrong?

Any suggestions please?

Audit People relationships to CI

2010-01-13 Thread Victor Olufowobi

Hello Listers,

This is a sanity check to make sure I'm not duplicating OOTB
functionality

I need to audit people raltionship to CI (that is who
related/unrelated who to/from a CI in what role) and display
information in Asset Management AST forms for relevant CI.
The plan was to create a custom audit form with filters attached to
record relevant information On Submit and On Delete to/from
AST:AssetPeople form. This information can then be displayed for
relevant CI in Functions panel (just like CMDB Audits).
I suppose I could configure logging for AST:AssetPeople form to
CMDB:DefaultAuditLog form but there are two problems with this:
  - On Submit the GUID_ID defaults to instanceid of the record in
AST:AssetPeople form making it impossible for me to display with CMDB
Audits button
  - On Delete NULL information is recorded making it impossible to
determine who was unrelated.

Does anyone have a better approach?

Maybe that is what is required to insert that missing commit.

If Conny's suggestion still doesn't work, then write a stored procedure
that performs that update, with a commit at the end like I suggested a
couple of emails ago.. I'll copy the design of the body of that stored
procedure just for your benefit again because previously I suggested update
but it looks like its an insert you need to create a stored procedure for..
 BEGIN

Maybe before you try all this (either mine or Conny's suggestion) SQL

Oracle SQL logging would also help you find where a commit is missing..

   Victor,

running only the insert statement from sqlplus is not the whole
 story.

If you create an entry through ARS there are a bunch of statements
which gets executed. Immediately before the insert are 2 statements to
generate the request_id. You should see something like this in your
 sql-logfile.

   update arschema set nextid = nextid + 1 where schemaid = ;
   select nextid from arschema where schemaid = ;
   insert into T (cxxx,cyyy,czzz) values ('x','y','z');

Try to run these 3 in sqlplus. IMHO error ORA-02047 indicates some
problem with handling distributed transactions. If this sequence of
statements generates an error in sqlplus try a commit; after the first 2
statements. If this solves the problem you can set Next-ID-Commit: T in
ar.conf. This causes ARS to issue a commit after generating the nextid.

 Joe,
Thank you for pointing me to the right direction!.
I set on SQL log as suggested and found out that while SELECTing
fields from
MSSQL server to create a view in Oracle for the view form, ARS was
unable to
parse fields created in Oracle db with fields from MSSQL server.
This is
because the field names in MSSQL were in lowercases while in Oracle
they
were all in uppercases! (can this behaviour be changed?)
I redo the fields in SQL server to uppercases and I was able to
complete the
 creation of the view form!.
 Thanks a lot for that.
However, when I tried to submit to the form I received this error:
ARERR [552] Failure during SQL operation to the database:
ORA-02047: cannot
join the distributed transaction in progress
Once again I set on the SQL log.
ARS was trying to INSERT the required values to the view created for
the
view form when the error occurred.
I ran the command ARS was trying to run in sqlplus

 Hello Victor,

That is what I suspected with the invalid identifier error.. if your table
was not recognized it would be invalid table or view name error which is
not your case.. Which is why the later part of my previous email holds
good.. Take a SQL log, you may find that offending column name or columns..

There is something in the way that ARS is naming the offending column or
 columns causing that error..

When you find what column it is email the list or me directly and we'll try
to figure it out.. you might need to create a independent view in MS-SQL of
that table having names of fields that are legal to use in case there is a
column name there that the ARS converts into something else.. This is just
a speculative solution, we'll know more when you know more..

 Cheers

When you access the database view from oracle using SQL*Plus, are you
logging into SQL*Plus using the same username and password
(ARAdmin/AR#Admin# if you are using defaults) that is used by the AR System

If no, then do that and then try to access the table. If you get the same
error when you try it that way, it means that the DB link you have created
does not have sufficient privileges for that user that the AR System uses.
Ask your DBA to fix that..

If you can view the contents of that table after logging in as the AR
System database user ARAdmin, then you are trying to address that view
incorrectly while creating the view form.

Make sure that you are using the same name for the view when building it
from the AR System development interface, as you are using when addressing
it from SQL*Plus when connected as ARAdmin..

Check on the above before reading below... make sure you have enough
privileges to query that db link from ARAdmin and that you are addressing
 the view name correctly..

My gut feelings are you are using the right name, and have sufficient
privileges. Invalid Identifier errors in Oracle, is often due to the fact
that a column name used in an SQL statement, is an invalid column name. You
might want to turn up SQL logging to see what column is being addressed
wrongly. I'm betting on that the Request Identifier column that you are
selecting to create the view is being wrongly addressed by the SQL
 statement generated by Remedy.

Check your SQL log, and the SQL statement that is generating that error.
Copy that statement into SQL*Plus, execute it, and then try correcting that
statement (use ed line editor of SQL*Plus) and correct the column name that
is being addressed wrongly, then execute it till it runs correctly.

Tell us what you find there.. what works wrong and what needs to be fixed
on your SQL so that it may work correctly..

 Cheers

Thanks for the information and the links.

Unfortunately the external application does not publish web services

** Victor, Using the AIE should get you close where you
want to be.. Its straight forward, once you have AIE installed.. All
you need to do is configure AIE to access the MS-SQL database using
the AIE configuration console (its straight forward), and then create
that link. You then can use AIE schedules to exchange data. This means
that you would need a container table to hold that data. You cannot to
the best of my knowledge create a view form directly to a table in
MS-SQL using the AIE plugin.. So data got this way will not be online
data but will take a while to refresh depending on your refresh
schedules. To create a direct connection from Oracle to MS-SQL by
creating a table view of you would need to install the Oracle ODBC
drivers. Check this article..
http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_database_link_sql_server_oracle.htm [1]
Using JDBC to access MS-SQL. This however may not allow you to create
a DB link from Oracle to MS-SQL
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms378749.aspx [2] Have you
considered using Web Services for whatever you want to do? Does that
other application driven by that foreign data publish web services you
could consume? That would be perhaps more straight forward.. There
are also third party tools you may want to consider if you want data
connections to be online and real time.. Tibco is a name that comes to
my mind as I have used it in the past. Hope this helps.. Cheers

time, and this time the permissions will be correctly retained.

If you have an orphaned form you can perform the same operation if you have
it as part of the application on a second server so you can export a def
with the correct permissions. Otherwise you need to add it to the
application, then manually set the permissions.

To make this easier, open the application object and set the default
permissions you want, then for each field on the form you can just click
 the Set Defaults button.

 Hello listers,
I'm unable to find this information in Remedy manuals.

I just modified some forms that are part of a deployed application on my
development environment. I need to deployed these forms to the production
environment without losing the roles permission attached (I do not want to
 do
the same thing on production server). How can one do this?

Also can I (and how) attach a lose form to a deployed application so that
 the
 defined roles are applied?

Categorization vs Regular Subclass

2008-08-09 Thread Victor
Hello listers,

Just for sanity check, what are the pros, cons and potential problems or
pitfalls with creating categorization or regular subclass form classes
provided OOTB?
When should one or the other be used?

Suppose I wish to create a class for personal PCs and a seperate one for
servers (because there are 2 different groups managing those categories of CI
and they are not allowed to modify CIs not in their own class) is it better
to create 2 categorization subclasses from ComputerSystem class? Why not
regular classes?

Thanks in advance

Subject: Populating Table field with sql query result

 Hello Listers,

It is possible to populate a table field with the result from an sql
 query?
Any idea how this could be done?

Thank you Fred - but I'm afraid this approach is unacceptable.

The idea is to introduce a (sort of) summary button on system class form. On
clicking this button a summary page describing this particular CI together
its dependencies, components and components of its dependencies (in a single
Table form) will be displayed.

Remedy ARS 6.3
Oracle 9i database
MS IIS
Windows 2000

Any suggestions please?

Re: ITSM 7, CMDB CI and Product Definitions

2008-05-13 Thread Victor
The problem with Categorization Subclasses is that you cannot introduce new
attributes with different permission group. In cases where, for example, it
is not acceptable for server servicing group to change PC configurations
which is the domain of PC servicing group you cannot put everything in
BMC_ComputerSystem Class

And BMC's #1 rule on customizing the CMDB CDM is to try to create
Categorization Subclasses under an existing class structure before creating

That's how BMC_ComputerSystem can be used to contain almost all
 discoverable IT assets.

This situation is not a ploy to sell services. In its simplest form, the
fact is that ITIL adoption is a complex endeavor, and if your
organization is not willing to front-load their effort, then ITIL
adoption may not be for them. Everything that Chris mentioned is
important. Beyond what Chris wrote, it's necessary to understand the
thought processes that lead him to write what he did.

If your concern is future usability, then it is necessary to make your
very best effort to anticipate what the future needs will be. Only after
this process is grossly conlcluded can the CMDB be configured to meet the
need. Along with this concept, understand that the expected need will
never exactly match the actual future need, and so all you can do is make
  your best effort.

Just like CQI, ITIL is a journey, not a destination.

Less philosophically, my strongest recommendation to a customer is to not
add any new attributes or classes unless there is a demonstrable business
need for the new class/attribute. In my experience, customers are often
suprised how many CIs can be tracked using simply the BaseElement class.
My personal #1 rule of CMDB: unless there is a business need to consume
the data, do not store the data in the CMDB. This rule extends to the
Product Catalog, in that if there is no need to consume the data, then
there is no need to categorize the data.

Also, as Shawn mentioned, if you're using BMC's AM module, you have many
restrictions in the day-to-day use of your data, so some of these
questions, when pursued to their logical conclusion, will lead you to it
  doesn't matter.

** Thank you Shawn for your reply.

My concern is, and this is what I have heard from BMC, when designing
your Product categories, you need to think ahead to the design of the
CMDB as well. It's all interrelated and affects reporting, trending
  analysis etc.

I find it very difficult to design my Product categories and place all of
the Non-Asset items in an 'OTHER' category, only to find out 2 years down
the road our CMDB is messed up and mostly useless.

Was this information from BMC a ploy to sell more Professional Services?

I just hope to look enough ahead of the road to see the brick wall coming
  at me, that's all.

  Thanks again,

  Kevin P.

Part of the problem is that there are no good answers to your questions.
By default, we put things in the BMC_ComputerSystem class, unless it fits
in somewhere else. So a Blackberry technically is a computer, just a
tiny one. So is a calculator.

Stuff that doesn't have a class and isn't anything remotely close to
being a computer goes in as equipment.

I'm wary of creating new classes unless there is a demonstrable need for
it that is so strong we can't live without it. My users already hate
that they have nothing in Asset Management to be able to search across
the different classes (e.g. how do you find, in ITSM, all Assets located
on the third floor of a certain building? The data exists, but there is
no screen for users to pull that type of information.) New classes make
the system harder to use. In fact, rather than creating a bunch of new
classes, we've hidden some of the OOB classes to make the system easier
  to navigate.
