Question: How to improve AIS performance
Hello Listers, Are there any parameter tuning that can be done to enhace the performance of AIS?. We have performance issues when multiple users are performing simulations or when the CI the simulation is performed on has got several relationships/levels of relationships. Any Idea how to improve performance? Thanks for your inputs. The trouble with having such a high limit is that you can have your system just run out of resources eg. stack space, before that limit is reached. I would have thought a limit to nested filters at around 25 or 50 should be plenty. If you have it set to this limit and you find that a perfectly well behaved process is still hitting the limit I'd be surprised, and you could just up the limit. I suspect in the examples here there is a bug or some bad data that is causing the system to be a lot more recursive than was intended. You would probably see a bit of a spike on resources such as cpu and memory if a process does loop. In the old days we didn't have a filter stack limit, just a total number of filters. The trouble with that is that with the large number of filters that something like HPD:Help Desk had you could hit pretty high limits in just normal use. Alternatively you could have a tightly recursive set of filters that used up the stack without hitting the filter limit. If you can replicate the problem it would be a good idea to have server logging on to see what is happening. You may not see the log immediately prior to the system crash but you will definitely be able to see a trend before hand. Your log will be pretty full if you are running out of stack. If you have a low filter stack limit then you will see an error thrown and won't have a crash to worry about. Hello Listers, I am new to Remedy ITSM 7.6.04 and yes, I know User Tool has been deprecated but I want to find out if the problems I am experiencing are typical (or maybe someone found a workaround) or I am just doing something wrong. After logging in through WUT and clicking the Home Page link - I get the image shown in WUT_Home.png. The same thing happened when I tried to Asset Management or Change Management Consoles. When I tried to access Atrium Core Console I recieved ARERR 9217 - however on returning to the home page using the link provided by the error page I was able to use the tool as normal. Since these attributes need to apply to all further subclasses I don't think creating a custom class is a good idea. I have added a few attributes myself to Base Element without any issues. CMDB Change Permission role not working.
Hello listers, I need to allow a support group to modify only a certain set of attributes. So I add a new role (with -6) and reSet the necessary attributes to include -6 role for change permission using CMDBDriver tool. After that I add this support group to this new role. I assign a user to this support group but when this user attempt to modify one of those attributes an error message informing that user does not have a write permit to those fields is displayed. What am I missing? This user is also a member of Asset User group and is having write license. Any suggestions - please? If you don't have OS licenses try looking at Microsoft Action Pack (MAPS) or I guess you could use Linux for nothing. When I last looked you could use Oracle as a developer for free. On Thursday 10 December 2009 20:30:37 Joe D'Souza wrote: Victor, When you access the database view from oracle using SQL*Plus, are you logging into SQL*Plus using the same username and password (ARAdmin/AR#Admin# if you are using defaults) that is used by the AR System to connect to the Oracle database? If no, then do that and then try to access the table. If you get the same error when you try it that way, it means that the DB link you have created does not have sufficient privileges for that user that the AR System uses. Ask your DBA to fix that.. If you can view the contents of that table after logging in as the AR System database user ARAdmin, then you are trying to address that view incorrectly while creating the view form. Make sure that you are using the same name for the view when building it from the AR System development interface, as you are using when addressing it from SQL*Plus when connected as ARAdmin.. Check on the above before reading below... make sure you have enough privileges to query that db link from ARAdmin and that you are addressing the view name correctly.. My gut feelings are you are using the right name, and have sufficient privileges. Invalid Identifier errors in Oracle, is often due to the fact that a column name used in an SQL statement, is an invalid column name. You might want to turn up SQL logging to see what column is being addressed wrongly. I'm betting on that the Request Identifier column that you are selecting to create the view is being wrongly addressed by the SQL statement generated by Remedy. Check your SQL log, and the SQL statement that is generating that error. Copy that statement into SQL*Plus, execute it, and then try correcting that statement (use ed line editor of SQL*Plus) and correct the column name that is being addressed wrongly, then execute it till it runs correctly. Tell us what you find there.. what works wrong and what needs to be fixed on your SQL so that it may work correctly.. Re: View form to MS SQL database from Oracle based ARSystem
Joe, Thanks for the information and the links. Unfortunately the external application does not publish web services - I was thinking that maybe I could use the AIE plugin to create view forms without going through the procedure of creating db link. ... But nevermind, I'll have to talk to the Oracle db administrator :) Thanks again Victor On Tue 08/12/09 01:57 , Joe D'Souza jdso...@shyle.net sent: ** Victor, Using the AIE should get you close where you want to be.. Its straight forward, once you have AIE installed.. All you need to do is configure AIE to access the MS-SQL database using the AIE configuration console (its straight forward), and then create that link. You then can use AIE schedules to exchange data. This means that you would need a container table to hold that data. You cannot to the best of my knowledge create a view form directly to a table in MS-SQL using the AIE plugin.. So data got this way will not be online data but will take a while to refresh depending on your refresh schedules. To create a direct connection from Oracle to MS-SQL by creating a table view of you would need to install the Oracle ODBC drivers. Check this article.. http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_database_link_sql_server_oracle.htm [1] Using JDBC to access MS-SQL. This however may not allow you to create a DB link from Oracle to MS-SQL http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms378749.aspx [2] Have you considered using Web Services for whatever you want to do? Does that other application driven by that foreign data publish web services you could consume? That would be perhaps more straight forward.. There are also third party tools you may want to consider if you want data connections to be online and real time.. Tibco is a name that comes to my mind as I have used it in the past. Hope this helps.. ..or maybe a service call cannot be used in this situatation?. The filter guide will perform a table loop to concatenate values from the database and this resultant value will be output to the calling AL. Any suggestions please? If you have an orphaned form you can perform the same operation if you have it as part of the application on a second server so you can export a def with the correct permissions. Otherwise you need to add it to the application, then manually set the permissions. To make this easier, open the application object and set the default permissions you want, then for each field on the form you can just click the Set Defaults button. For example, if AIE was installed using the Demo user and this user was subsequently locked down (eg new password) then the AIE instances would not be able to log in. There is a utility in the AIE install area to change the AIE user in the AIE config file. This ensures that the password is encrypted in the config file. Cheers Peter Is REMEDY7 the actual name of your host? If you check your open connections to your SQL server from its Management Console, do you see the AIE service connecting to it? If not do you have a max number of open connections defined on your SQL server that may be preventing AIE from connecting? Categorization vs Regular Subclass
Hello listers, Just for sanity check, what are the pros, cons and potential problems or pitfalls with creating categorization or regular subclass form classes provided OOTB? When should one or the other be used? Suppose I wish to create a class for personal PCs and a seperate one for servers (because there are 2 different groups managing those categories of CI and they are not allowed to modify CIs not in their own class) is it better to create 2 categorization subclasses from ComputerSystem class? Why not regular classes? Thanks in advance Victor ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Platinum Sponsor: www.rmsportal.com ARSlist: Where the Answers Are

Re: ITSM 7, CMDB CI and Product Definitions
The problem with Categorization Subclasses is that you cannot introduce new attributes with different permission group. In cases where, for example, it is not acceptable for server servicing group to change PC configurations which is the domain of PC servicing group you cannot put everything in BMC_ComputerSystem Class Victor On Tuesday 13 of May 2008 17:30:03 Rick Cook wrote: And BMC's #1 rule on customizing the CMDB CDM is to try to create Categorization Subclasses under an existing class structure before creating new classes. Creating new classes and subclasses should be reserved for situations that can be proven to not fit into any of the existing ones. That's how BMC_ComputerSystem can be used to contain almost all discoverable IT assets. In its simplest form, the fact is that ITIL adoption is a complex endeavor, and if your organization is not willing to front-load their effort, then ITIL adoption may not be for them. Everything that Chris mentioned is important. Beyond what Chris wrote, it's necessary to understand the thought processes that lead him to write what he did. If your concern is future usability, then it is necessary to make your very best effort to anticipate what the future needs will be. Only after this process is grossly conlcluded can the CMDB be configured to meet the need. Along with this concept, understand that the expected need will never exactly match the actual future need, and so all you can do is make your best effort. Just like CQI, ITIL is a journey, not a destination. Less philosophically, my strongest recommendation to a customer is to not add any new attributes or classes unless there is a demonstrable business need for the new class/attribute. In my experience, customers are often suprised how many CIs can be tracked using simply the BaseElement class. My personal #1 rule of CMDB: unless there is a business need to consume the data, do not store the data in the CMDB. This rule extends to the Product Catalog, in that if there is no need to consume the data, then there is no need to categorize the data. Also, as Shawn mentioned, if you're using BMC's AM module, you have many restrictions in the day-to-day use of your data, so some of these questions, when pursued to their logical conclusion, will lead you to it doesn't matter. My concern is, and this is what I have heard from BMC, when designing your Product categories, you need to think ahead to the design of the CMDB as well. It's all interrelated and affects reporting, trending analysis etc. I find it very difficult to design my Product categories and place all of the Non-Asset items in an 'OTHER' category, only to find out 2 years down the road our CMDB is messed up and mostly useless. Was this information from BMC a ploy to sell more Professional Services? I just hope to look enough ahead of the road to see the brick wall coming at me, that's all. Thanks again, Kevin P. ** Part of the problem is that there are no good answers to your questions. By default, we put things in the BMC_ComputerSystem class, unless it fits in somewhere else. So a Blackberry technically is a computer, just a tiny one. So is a calculator. Stuff that doesn't have a class and isn't anything remotely close to being a computer goes in as equipment. I'm wary of creating new classes unless there is a demonstrable need for it that is so strong we can't live without it. My users already hate that they have nothing in Asset Management to be able to search across the different classes (e.g. how do you find, in ITSM, all Assets located on the third floor of a certain building? The data exists, but there is no screen for users to pull that type of information.) New classes make the system harder to use. In fact, rather than creating a bunch of new classes, we've hidden some of the OOB classes to make the system easier to navigate.
