[AsburyPark] The Fast Lane
Hi All, I'm a quiet lurker here, but the Fast Lane brings back a lot of memories for me. In the early 80's, Asbury Park was already down on her luck but the clubs were a draw. I was at Georgian Court College through most of that time (all women's Catholic colleges are not a hotbed of activity on the weekends especially when the nearest mens' school is a Yeshiva). Asbury was our usual destination. I went to one of my first concerts at the Fast Lane. I saw Jorma Koukenan (former guitarist for Jefferson Airplane and I'm sure I botched the spelling of his name). I was 17 and borrowed an older friend's ID. The drinking age back then was still 19. Didn't the Fast Lane have padded floors to sit on when there were concerts? There were not seats. I remember that. I don't think the draw was Jorma. He was already a trivia question by then. I think the draw was something to do, someplace to go here at the shore. It wasn't a huge train ride to NYC or worse driving down Route 70 through miles of Pine Barrens to Philly. It was here. We also used to go to other clubs like Mrs. Jay's all through college. I remember the painting on the wall of an old lady in a rocking chair. I think it said "Mrs. Jay's: We were here when you were born". I came back to work in a nonprofit in Asbury Park in 1994. Nothing was there anymore not even the places from before I was born. When I gave directions to my clients I was always saying "do you remember where x used to be?" It was very sad. The landmarks were gone. People used to tease me because I believed in Asbury coming back. I still do, but people aren't teasing anymore. Now they want to know what's going on. I don't think places like the Fast Lane or the Baronet are dumps. I know that they don't build things like the Baronet anymore. Don't people go to the Count Basie? I think if you restore it that people will come. There still isn't a whole lot to do here at the shore. Well unless you enjoy shopping in department stores. I know if there were theatres like the Baronet that I would go. I know my friends now wait to hear about the new restaurants I've tried. I know a lot of my friends who used to go into the city for dinner now say they're going to Asbury Park. I know that people came to Asbury Park in the pre-first redevelopment era to go to clubs like the Fast Lane Mrs Jay's. Most of my old friends are now going to NY or Red Bank for theatre and dinner. I don't see why they wouldn't come to Asbury again. I think they just have to know it's there and they will. Jennifer YAHOO! GROUPS LINKS Visit your group "AsburyPark" on the web. And relocate that density (#of units) to north of the BC Hotel. That would free up the core of the oceanfront for rezoning back to traditional tourism, entertainment, etc, uses. [AsburyPark] Board of Education Election

This has been a quiet election so far, but soon you'll see the lawn signs popping up all over almost as a right of spring. Even though this is a quiet election year, it is very important that the voters of Asbury Park do not become complacent and feel that it doesn't matter whether you vote or not. Each vote is extremely important in this town and one vote can make a difference. We've seen it before. Also, if you are not going to be in town on April 18th, PLEASE send for an absentee ballot. [AsburyPark] Re: THE ELEMENT OF TIMING
Well, one thing is for sure, I didn't try to hide my identity. However, you did a good job. You must know who my brother is based on all of the names you provided last night. As for the insurance issue, let me set the record straight, as I came from that field before becoming a teacher. First and foremost, this insurance issue has popped up once before. Our prior BA, EK, proposed this change to get out of the SHBP, while Karl Crudup was President. This change to BCBS came with the fact that now a broker, Grinspec, would handle the benefits. You are definitely right. This would have saved the BOE approximately 12% the first year. Not bad, and I would have definitely been in favor. However, year 2, 3 and so on steadily would have gone up drastically to the point that the savings were now a major loss to the BOE. To try to get back to the SHBP and get rid of a broker was and still is impossible. The state will not allow. Once you are out, you're out. Then you are forced to use this broker at a 10% fee. Yes, 10% to the broker, or at that time, roughly $700,000. There is your 600K in savings minus 100K. Second, this issue is rising to the top once more. I really don't need to go in to it again, but the fact remains that it is history, only two years old, repeating itself again. And I must also point out the fact that EK, the ex BA is under indictment in another school distrcit as we speak. I wonder who was getting a kickback with the 700K in commission? Now I don't know where you get your information, but I think they left out some major details. I would have no problem switching insurance companies to get a better deal for the members if the coverage was better. However, at the cost to the taxpayer, and a rising insurance cost higher than the SHBP, it would not only cost you, the taxpayer more than SHBP, but it would also make my negotiations harder. This would be due to the fact that cost of insurance under this so called savings, would be impossible to keep up with and the BOE would be forced to look again. Third and final point, Frank D. had nothing to do with the insurance being stopped, nor did the Association. It was economically the correct thing to do. Frank D., as you know, is only one vote and I really don't think he has that kind of power. However, I think he should be flattered by the fact that so many people think he does. I hope this answers your questions. I think the source should give you a bit more detailed information. And if you want, you can reach out to me any time and we can discuss it in person. Russ Leidy!!! The social studies teacher? If that's the same guy, I had a blast in his class. Every monday morning he played a tape of the previous night's 60 minutes. Talk about a liberal! He made no bones about it that he was a socialist. How much of that was bait to get me going I don't know, but I spent a whole year debating with him. He'd probably get in trouble with Sean Hannity for doing that in class today, but I recollect that he wasn't preachy about it - he got us talking. Very inspiring to make us defend our point of view. It's a different ballgame today with Administration.--- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, bluebishop82 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Russ Leidy!!! The social studies teacher? You KNOW Lewis and it seems like the Board falls in line to what he says. I'm sure Frank D. can get 5 votes if he really wants to, do the math. By the way why didn't the UNION publicly blast the 5 years contract giving to Lewis? Unless you agree with it. Bring back Russ Leidy he would have destroyed that contract. I am easily accessible, as you know who I am. Johnny Boy --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Fred asburydogma@ wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, apeaexec1

--- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, bluebishop82 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Russ Leidy!!! The social studies teacher? If that's the same guy, I had a blast in his class. First, BB, I want to thank you publicly (or at least semi-publicly as in this group) for stepping up to the plate and delivering a top of the line printer-fax-copier to the kids in the 5th grade apogee program at the Bradley Elementary School. Having seen some of their writings, I can say we have some really talented scribes among those young people. You'd think that with a huge budget like the one we have, the kids in that class would have had a decent printer to go along with the computers. Now, thanks to you (and I know you had attended that school for a time back when), the students can get a hard copy of what they compose. And thanks for the ink cartridges as well. We may disagree on lots of issues, especially red state-blue state stuff, but in this case we're on the same page, literally, I think. And perhaps you can assist us in a project the board has said is a priority: the creation of an Ed Foundation. In the years ahead, when the State steps further away from our district, such a foundation will be more important than ever. If you have any ideas on the subject, perhaps you can contact the folks in Central office and even (gasp!) the much maligned union. Anyone who doubts that the Bradley School has not come a long way and turned a significant corner lately should visit the place. The school administration and staff work together in an atmosphere that might put many suburban schools to shame. By the way, the same can be said for the other two Elementary Schools in Asbury: Thurgood Marshall and Bangs Avenue. There is an atmosphere of caring, calm, and best of all, learning, going on in those places, too. Frank (I'm not running for anything but the Crosstown bus) D'Alessandro Yahoo!
