NEPTUNE — A two-and-a-half-story house at 511 S. Riverside Drive was
destroyed by fire late Monday night.

Officials said a woman who was in the house escaped injury from the
blaze, which started about 10:45 p.m.

Firefighters were still hosing down the shell that remained of the
house late Monday night. Police Lt. Darrell Furman said at about
11:30 p.m. that it would be at least two hours before investigators
could start determining cause of the fire.

Exactly. Why pick on them? THEY took a risk - MM and Style.

 I'm just waiting for a 50 or 70% sale.

They have a cool bathing suit I've been eyeing.

Yes, they took a big risk. Give them credit for that. Not
everything is going to be for everyone. If you don't like it, don't go
there! I just hope there are other types of boadwalk establishments
that are more boardwalk in feeling and style. I don't want to see
everything with the same high pried clothing store atmosphere. That
doesn't create the boardwalk magic of last night. Not at all. The
magic was brought on by the concert. Without it, the crowds would not

You both have valid points. There is nothing wrong with appealing to a
wealthier clientele with one or two stores. (remember the Japanese High
Art
http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/images/eaa/M/M01/M0126/M0126\
-lrg.jpeg store on the boardwalk from 1920?) And spending money
locally instead of in Freehold is a good thing. Let the market work. If
there's no customer base, the store will fold and someone else will give
it a shot. At the same time, smart development demands a mix of stores
so not-so-wealthy people can treat themselves or their families to
something too (hot dogs, pizza, $10 Tillie face T-Shirts, beach chairs
that DON'T fall apart at the end of the season ;) Giving the working
class a reason to feel conected to the new Asbury Park is also a very
good thing. It's not chi-chi versus hicks. It's just a healthy mix
of tourists with money willing to part with it and locals who also want
to enjoy the ocean without forking over their life's savings. Get it
right and everyone wins.

The locals should guard against economic gerrymandering. What you don't
want is to slip into the us vs. them mindset that's apparently already
infected http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AsburyPark/message/38419 the
local music scene
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AsburyPark/message/37572 . Believe me, I
cheered along with everyone else when the Bennies Go Home boat sailed
past the beach every Labor Day. But there IS a reason they waited till
Labor Day. We may have rolled our eyes at the hand that fed us, but we
never really bit it.

Well, no one would argue that any good came from destroying the

Tillie may be born out of the same human emotion that compels the
preservation of chunks of the Berlin Wall. I'm not making any
comparison to the histories behind the two structures, obviously.
What I am saying is that those who have preserved the pieces of the
Wall see the graffiti and pock marks from rocks and bullets as a
visual reminder of the resistance to what the Wall represented. It's
a monument to the good fight. Locally, even when the rest of Asbury
Park was falling apart, Tillie stood silently over the city as a
rallying point to those fighting the good fight. (I know you have a
much different angle on this, but bear with me...) So now that the
Palace is gone, those who fought to save it want to hold on to the
most visually inspiring piece of that resistance.

Not saying it's a smart way to spend money. But I understand the
emotion that compels it.

[AsburyPark] Jersey Shore Premium Outlets: Good or bad for Asbury Park???

2008-08-19 Thread arcman210
The new high-end outlet mall is opening on Rt 66 in Tinton Falls this
November (the tenants were just announced today). Will this be a good
thing or a bad thing for Asbury Park? On one hand, people will come
from near and far to go shopping at the outlets... and Asbury Park is
only a 10 minute ride from there. Many people could be inclined to go
check out the restaurants and stores in Asbury after or before a day of
shopping or just go to relax on the beach or boardwalk as it will be
the closest one to the outlets. On the other hand, the outlets could
have a negative effect by taking away business from the Asbury shops
and stores and could possibly prove to be competition (a sort
of Monmouth Mall effect, you could call it). It should be interesting
to see, especially next summer.

We discussed this one before.

You have a well known developer who spent hundreds of millions to

(they took the concept and ran with it).

The outlet can only HELP - that is, if you know how to market it.

A bunch of stores off the parkway - the Asbury Park exit. Get it?

Time to show what Asbury Park has in the summer - a beach and
boardwalk - for AFTER shopping, shopping break - or for husbands (or
signifigant other) to go cruising.

If an extra 5,000 people are 5 miles away - what will YOU do to get
them to see what YOU have? They came to spend money - your goal is to
take it from them - letting thme go home empty handed.

We did it on the boardwalk. I never turned a kid away that said to

Kind of like getting a desert and coffee at some place in ap after

Great point, Oak.

Isn't that area where the Asbury Park Golf Course or Airport used to
be? It wasn't in AP, but it was marketed that way.

Perhaps Madison Marquette should pay for some naming rights and call
it the Asbury Park Outlet Stores (the other one is commonly referred
to as the Jackson Outlets, but I'm not sure if that's the official
name).

I thought it might have been discussed here before, oops... must have
missed the topic. Or forgot discussing it. Either way, still should
be interesting to see how much it brings. But I dont remember
discussing it when the boardwalk had its new high end retail stores.

One thing I forgot to mention, if you read the list, the food options
are pretty limited, which should help AP since there are so many
restaurants... Mostly quick grabs too: hot dogs, ice cream,
pretzels, etc... sounds alot like what there should be more of on the
boardwalk.

I would think that would be hard to do... since MM itself is a retail
development company, just like the Chelsea company that built the
outlets... thats where I would assume the competition lies... two
different approaches but two companies who basically build
shopping/lifestyle destinations competing only a few miles apart.

[AsburyPark] So if it's Pizza you want...

2008-08-19 Thread oakdorf
My guess is Stella's when open in the first ave pav will have it.

I have my thoughts on the Pizza biz in NJ.

Someone has to ok it. I have my reasons to think that.

On the AP bw- there was the original Tami's pizza in 3rd Ave Pavfrom
the mid 60's I think to around '79 give or take a few years. Casino I
think had some frozen crust ones. That was it a short period on the
side of the casino and of course over that palace. The real stuff was
at Tami's. Automatic dough roller etc.

When we started in '81. I searched for a used pizza oven. My old
Italian friends found me one from an old bakery in Long branch. We
were after the old stone in the oven. It worked. The dough we would
buy from the original Piaconnes.. big plastic bags of dough. The
sauce we'd brew. For a short period of time it was great - then we
got lazy. Then back..then as the boardwalk died by 84 85- the frozen
crust, plop some canned sauce and some cheese.

So if you want to open a pizzeria - go over to Corbos, APE on 4th or
Johnsons...

Get an oven, hoods, fire system, extra AC to help cool the place,
dough retarder, mixer, refrigation...floors, walls, tables, sinks, pots
and pans, chairs..lights, signs, soda coolers, gratersthen figure
out you're rent, insurance and all the rest.

Here's my last thoughts on boardwalk food...

 - wnew concert our second spin on the bw on no pizza - my buddies
from attillos supplied me with about 100 pies and over 100 subs-
sold out real fast

 - the reason you never sold subs or pies on the BW - becasue you
wanted people (like families) to buy something for everyone - not to
share one sub or one pie- you don't make money doing that you
want to sell 10 burgers and 10 sodas

 - same reason you don't sell bottles of soda like 2 liter or 1
liter - you don't want people sharing

 - small, medium, large - most people will at LEAST buy a medium -
men a large...

 - people would bitch when you ask them for 10 cents for a cup of
water, today $3.00 for a bottle and no one bitches..

What ever happened to sushi

Like Jackson PREMIUM outlet marketing itself to GA

WHY? Because you dump your family at Great Adventure then kill time

Think the same here - same distance from JAckson outlet to drop off

I have a clue.

That's enough. Someone can pay me from this point.

[AsburyPark] Re: DEP Equivocating on Oceanfront Parking

2008-08-19 Thread sandpiper15

First of all, good for you for following up on this. I have a feeling
the bigger fish to fry mindset makes people forget that AP is
indeed on the Atlantic Ocean. This stuff matters big time.

Second of all...

...However, Hershey made it clear that DEP did not acknowledge that a
dune had been bulldozed. Ms. Hershey made a point of noting that crab
grass had occupied that land before, not dune grass...

Ummm...yeah, and people used to dump garbage right into the ocean
back in the 1800s.

Are you freaking kidding me??

This woman actually said that with a straight face??? (Actually,
she was on the phone. Maybe she was stifling laughter like a 3rd
grader while she was saying that.) Yeah, no kidding crab grass
occupied the land before. That's the case in a lot of shore towns. So
the hell what? At one point, enough people wised up to the fact that
relying on crab grass to protect housing and commercial spaces from
storm after storm wasn't working, so they constructed dunes.
Get with the program Hershey!

..But there's also nothing good about having car engine oil and
other fluids dripping into the ocean either...

No kidding - particularly at a time when AP's trying to rebrand
itself as an oceanfront destination (i.e. place to go swimming)
again.

...(We 've never understood how the diehard fishermen justify
destroying dunes to park their trucks while they fish and most likely
grumble about the dirty water and poor catches.)...

I can't even tell you how many times I've taken a party boat out of
Belmar and seen the captain or first mate cut up a customer's tangled
line and chuck it right into the water like it's no big deal. It was
only my desire to get back to shore that kept me from socking the SOB
right on the nose. Expecting fishermen to act in their best economic
interests will never cease to bring disappointment.

...When I asked who was authorized to discuss the city's CAFRA permit
with the press, Ms. Hershey again asked for this officer's name. Ms.
Hershey could not pin point the person in the DEP's press office
knowledgeable enough to discuss this 5 year old plan...

I'd start with DEP Assistant Commisioner Mark Mauriello at 609-292-
1932.

Beyond that, this shouldn't even be a DEP issue. If this is a Green
Acres lot, doesn't that mean the state gave money to Asbury Park to
acquire the land for permanent open space? It is still city-owned land,
no?

I can't for the life of me find the city's municipal code online. But I
have to believe - no wait - I would LIKE to believe that, much like
every other oceanfront town with dunes, Asbury Park has a written and
enforceable code governing tresspassing in these areas - like this one
http://www.e-codes.generalcode.com/codebook_frameset.asp?t=gsrindex=21\
00_Arequest=dune%20areasfuzzy=fuzziness=4stemming=phonic=natlang=\
maxfiles=999  or this one
http://www.e-codes.generalcode.com/codebook_frameset.asp?t=gsrindex=16\
43_Arequest=dune%20areasfuzzy=fuzziness=4stemming=phonic=natlang=\
maxfiles=999 . If yes, shouldn't there be a patrol car at the
entrance to this lot with a friendly patrolman leaning against the
side and letting everyone know, Texas Ranger style, in no uncertain
terms, that tresspassing on that dune, be it on foot or wheel, is
STRICTLY forbidden? Seriously, enough already with the Trenton
bureacracy. Those trucks need to go, like yesterday.

The new high-end outlet mall is opening on Rt 66 in Tinton Falls this

thing or a bad thing for Asbury Park? On one hand, people will come
from near and far to go shopping at the outlets... and Asbury Park is
only a 10 minute ride from there. Many people could be inclined to go
check out the restaurants and stores in Asbury after or before a day of
shopping or just go to relax on the beach or boardwalk as it will be
the closest one to the outlets. On the other hand, the outlets could
have a negative effect by taking away business from the Asbury shops
and stores and could possibly prove to be competition (a sort
of Monmouth Mall effect, you could call it). It should be interesting
 to see, especially next summer.

Good for AP but bad for my ride to Home Depot. They will have tour
buses bringing visitors to NYC. Get an AP trolley there (free shuttle
service)

A little confusing, since part of the CAFRA permit requires a
fisherman's parking lot on the old Marine Grill site. It also
considers the development of the Triangle (talk about economically
sensitive) with a 6-8 story structure and townhouses in the vacated
portions of the road bed abutting the beachfront.

I have Prada blues on now. About 5 years old. My wife got them for me
and I remember cursing her out when she didbut when I had to meet
some women some time ago for breakfast in Long Branch - one very cute
one noticed the shoes...

I can go to Garmany as well and pick out nice stuff - $545 for a
shirt would be a bit rough.

One my first jobs, my mother had me call my uncle to tell me to go
get suits in the city. Sent me to 3rd and 21st, 11th floor. Elevator
opens up and three old jewish guys and about 7 bolts of
material. you a 42long... ok- whats your address and phone.. In
about a week, these guys banged out 3 suits which I wore day in and
out for years at $130 per. Cut and fit like a charm - that and the
Florsheims...

As for the outlet centers...

 - not like the original outlet centers when you had to haul your
ass up to reading or lake george and find real outlet stuff - stuff
sen wrong or overstocked... now the stuff is MADE for the outlet
centers or simply stuff that didn't sell at regular price that you
will probably pay MORE for at the outlet center then you would had
you purchased it on sale at the non-outlet store.

 - I don't imagine many gay guys running over to this outlet
center...no names to go running to. So there oyu go - AP can become
THE name place to come to - prada, hugo boss, zenga, canali, DG,
Smith etc etcadd a ferrari and porsche dealer- wrap main street
from Monroe to bond back to Cookman - The gay man's shopping
center

You can always shop Mr. Fashion on Cookman. While he's no longer
there, the first time I met Carl Williams - he pulled at my collar
and tried to straighten my clothes out. Just like this guy did in AC
as he was trying to convince me that a pair of silver shoes he was
trying to sell me looked good on me and not like the tin man.

[AsburyPark] Re: Jersey Shore Premium Outlets: Good or bad for Asbury Park???

2008-08-19 Thread justifiedright
Arcman I don't think Chelsea and MM have any need to overcome the
other considering the location of the projects and what they are
designed for.

Chelsea benefits from the ocean/boardwalk/after shopping
entertainment connection.

Asbury benefits from the mall-type shopping it doesn't have.

They both benefit from a shared advertiseing budget and a shuttle
service.

Seems like a win-win to me.

I would think that would be hard to do... since MM itself is a
retail
development company, just like the Chelsea company that built the
outlets... thats where I would assume the competition lies... two
different approaches but two companies who basically build
shopping/lifestyle destinations competing only a few miles apart.

The Job fair - for about 800 EIGHT HUNDRED people is at CONVENTION HALL.

That's in ASBURY PARK.

1+1=2

And that kind of math wasn't the norm for AP.

[AsburyPark] Asbury Park Boardwalk and Olympic Baseball in article....

2008-08-19 Thread oakdorf
Interesting commentary in this article the other day.

.The cab driver looked at my map, the Wukesong Baseball Complex circled in
pen, and
smiled. He nodded, said something in Chinese, and we were off. Ah, a summer
night in
Beijing. What could be better than Olympic baseball in the twilight smog?

Except that the cabbie took me to the air pistol range.

Okay, let me get this straight: People shooting targets like they're trying to
win a stuffed
giraffe on the Asbury Park boardwalk ... that can stay, but baseball has to go?

[AsburyPark] BCH - TripAdvisor.com Review

2008-08-19 Thread wernerapnj
Found this recent opinion:

Aug 10, 2008
The Hotel, like Asbury Park itself, is rundown, with lots of vacant
lots, boarded up buildings and people that look and act as though
they are on work release from the state prison. The hotel room
itself was fine but the building needed serious exterior work. There
was broken glass and construction debris all along the perimeter.
The yard was overgrown with crabgrass breaking through pavement.
Lots of sloppy painting with chipped molding and paint chips and
paintdroppings falling all about. We were there for three days and
there was no groundskeeper to be seen. The back door of the hotel
was open all night so anyone could have wandered in

There was only one working elevator when we arrived and that went
down when a malfunctioning fire alarm set everything down. The
continental breakfast was bagels, coffee and OJ. That's it. There is
a bar, but it is not in use. It looks like there was a restaurant,
but it is not in use. The parking lot was a mess and hardly adequate
for the number of people.

The pool was actually quite nice and well kept, with smooth tile
bottom. It is clear that they are trying, but for the life of me, I
don't know why they opened when they clearly are not ready. If you
just want to hit the beach cheaply then this place is adequate, but
there are other beaches. Asbury is a dump by comparison. Try Point
Pleasant, Sandy Hook

The full info page for the BCH and all the reviews.

Does not help Asbury Park that most reviews were poor.
I thought the new owners were a first class operation.
What's going on over there?

That's were a chamber, economic development dept, and any marketing co hired by
the
city should react and take action. So should the owners. Those are probably old
comments
-r egardless of the dates. Some of those dates are self regenerating - based on
some
work I've done.

They do that to make it APPEAR the site is updated on a regular basis when in
fact, it's
not.

However. the exterior of the hotel could really be spruced up - at least the
grounds.

Some people understand the power of Internet marketing, others don't.

For mall consultant's fee, I can review some interesting stats gathered from
various
websites - about ap - like asburyboardwalk.com.

Sometimes, data is gold. You just have to know how to utilize it.

Like sand and water marketed correctly, is gold.

Hi John,

I live too far away to visit for just a show which is why I had asked
about how seating would be handled and if that information might be
shared with the group. I was politely told that if I wanted to know, I
should buy a ticket and go to the show.

Not too long after I posed that question, the NY Times reported that
this performance would be in a Theater in the Round formation. I
suppose that my question original question was quelled as I do not have
the clout of The New York Times.

Although I would have liked to have attended a performance, I was and am
unable to. I offer the following web resources for the group to peruse

The Asbury Park Press Building and Neptune Township fought and lost on
this one! Can you imagine the congestion? It's already hairy going
to Wal-Mart or Home Depot. That area was all woods, for decades and
nothing was out there. Now? Ruby Tuesday, Walmart, Walgreens, Home
Depot the bank and a couple of other stores on the Home Depot side and
an Arby's? Neptune did NOT want the traffic or responsibility of
installing traffic signals that Tinton Falls didn't buy or share in
the expense, but they, (Tinton Falls), will reap the benefit!

only a 10 minute ride from there. Many people could be inclined to go
check out the restaurants and stores in Asbury after or before a day of

have a negative effect by taking away business from the Asbury shops

of Monmouth Mall effect, you could call it). It should be interesting
 to see, especially next summer.

  We discussed this one before.

You have a well known developer who spent hundreds of millions to
build the place - and has experience drawing people to their
 outlets
(they took the concept and ran with it).

The outlet can only HELP - that is, if you know how to market it.

A bunch of stores off the parkway - the Asbury Park exit. Get it?

Time to show what Asbury Park has in the summer - a beach and
boardwalk - for AFTER shopping, shopping break - or for husbands
 (or
  signifigant other) to go cruising.

If an extra 5,000 people are 5 miles away - what will YOU do to
 get
them to see what YOU have? They came to spend money - your goal is
 to
take it from them - letting thme go home empty handed.

We did it on the boardwalk. I never turned a kid away that said to
me hey mister... what you got for 25 cent..can I get a soda or an
ice cream.. or like my 90 year old neighbor who told me that if
 they
put $5.00 down to shoot a gun and it cost only $1 - you never let
  them leave...

Kind of like getting a desert and coffee at some place in ap after

 bam -
  you're out another $30...

That's what happens in Rehoboth Beach.

There's a free shuttle from the Cape May-Lewes Ferry to the outlets to
Rehoboth and back again.

Someone can take the ferry over and go to the beach and the outlets in
the same day.

I've been on the shuttles and they get pretty crowded, especially in
the summer.

think had some frozen crust ones.

Johnsons...

Get an oven, hoods,20fire system, extra AC to help cool the place,

dough retarder, mixer, refrigation...floors, walls, tables, sinks, pots

and pans, chairs..lights, signs, soda coolers, gratersthen figure

out you're rent, insurance and all the rest.

EXACTLY.

The Brick and Mortar store is there while they can be selling a hell
mroe over the net.so maybe the store is a warehouse that enables
you to walk in and touchy feel, yet you can be back in arkansas buying
it from your couch, wondering what the hell the ocean looks like.

An early interpertation back in 2000 was on asburyboardwalk.com . Sold
a bunch of swim clothes on the site - via amazon and carabella.

Might take another shot at this winter if time permits.

They management should check all the travel sites. Lots of older

They need to hire someone to do some blogging for them...and to invest
in some sod and some flower beds.

I stayed there a number of times between July 07 through this past
winter. I reviewed some of the comments on tripadvisor and found
most of them pretty accurate, however a few opinions too extreme.

take a look at Expedia reviews.6 reviews avg rating 4.3 out of 5
http://tinyurl.com/59e29f

There is no doubt that maintaining the grounds better and repairing
the exterior would elevate the image of the property. The rear of
the building could also be use some attention. Service level is
just OK, however I found the rooms clean and comfortable.

At the current price it is a bargain.unless you are turned off
by ap.in which case you propably would not want to stay there
for any price! Bottom line in my opinion is that have done a pretty
good job, but if they want to start comanding higher rates they need
to pay more attention to the details.I can see why it is getting
mixed reviews.

John

If The Berkely is paying attention, the negative reviews are actually a good
thing in
disguise. If they pay attention to them and make the right kind of changes,
they can turn
the bad reviews into something good. That's the beauty of Tripadvisor.com.
If you do a google search on any vacation location, tripadvisor.com reviews
always come
in with the top results. It's constructive criticism at it's finest. Any
property or location
that doesn't pay attention to such things is living in the past. Hopefully The
Berkely will
take notice to what people are saying.

You can include meso change that to 38 and over. I bought the
best swim suit I have ever bought in my life therethe penguin
suits are worth the money. They dry very quickly and once they are
dry the fabric is more like regular shorts than a typical bathing
suit which can irritate your skin.(maybe too much info)

there are some things like shoes that I am not afraid to spend extra
money on.they will last longer and are constructed better.

I hope Style Rocket lasts on the boardwalkwhat I do not
understand is furniture stores on the boardwalk, in my mind
furniture stores belong downtown, on a highway or in a shopping
area, eventually it will all work itself out. As others have
mentioned would love to see an arcade, a good old fashioned
pizzeria and 1 or 2 rides that would be focal pointsa carousel
in the carousel house or a ferris wheel. Different things excite
different people.let's wait and see.
