I ask all of you to put yourselves in Werner's shoes and think again.

How many of us have actually been forced into a corner without a

maybe, I have learned from a great teacher.

With a few exceptions that I am aware of, many of Werner's critics on

My best advice to all of you is that if you choose to attack, make

As we watch the economy bundgy jumping, we must realize that any

This is just my opinion, but please try to think out of the box.

Brilliantly is relative.

Asbury Park was on the cutting edge of using new technologies. Two
factors played in that, founder James Bradley and the recognition that
visitors were attracted to the newest innovations.

Being a progressive resort, many technologies were taken advantage of
such as sanitary sewers, centralized gas and water distribution, along
with electric lighting.

Keep in mind that the lighting of that day was nothing like what is
available today A typical bulb put out far less light than those
of today.. dim by comparison, and of a different color.

The Morro Castle grounded across from the Sunset Avenue Pavilion. I

It would create a attraction to venture north beyond the ConHall.

Isn't the simplest, and most obvious attraction to AP it's music scene?
If we still had as many venues as we once had, and outdoor summer concerts on
the
beach, and the Arthur Pryor Bandshell in use, then we'd plenty to attact people.
The city lost a huge opportunity by letting it's musical heritage slip away.

[AsburyPark] Re: Why is it we miss a simple attraction to AP???

2008-11-25 Thread Jack Pitzer
Yeah, but unless you are a history buff, or a local, how many people would
actually take
the time to visit just for the Morro Castle?
The Hindenburgh disaster happened at Lakehurst, and people rarely visit the
memorial
there. I'm not sure if the airbase has been closed to the public since 9/11,
but before that,
when it was open, I made a visit once. The person at the visitors center said
that maybe a
few 100 people visit every year, with less as the years go by.
If I had my say, I'd steer our boardwalk area to be focused on music and
entertainment.
Those are proven attractions, and if the price is right, they are usually
recession proof.
Austin TX thrives because of it's music and entertainment scene.
Memphis has Beele street.
Nashville is all about music tourism.
NYC packs people into their theaters and concert halls, and below that there's
a myriad of
places that carry on the tradition of CBGBs etc.
AP once had that kind of draw, but the venues are disappearing, and the
boardwalk has
been made into a high end retail location that I predict will fail big time
this winter.
If AP had a rock and roll museum that highlighted Bruce and the others who are
tied to our
city, people would come from all over the US, Europe and the world to check it
out.
But, my thoughts on this are a complete waste, because it's just not going to
happen,
because our city doesn't recognize what it let slip thru it's fingers.

You need BIG things like BIG entertainment and little things like

AP kept the morro around for a couple years then because people wanted

Oak is that really an ad for AP from 1903?

The lights were Brilliantly Illuminated until dawn?

That should settle the arguement taking place on this board over
beach front lighting.

I smell complete vindication.

They new back then that visitors wanted a brilliantly lit place at
night so they would feel safe (not to mention awake to stay out
longer).

It's just plain common sense. There is no contrary view grounded in
the reality of tourism.

Even when I was there Sunday night, when we walked onto the
boardwalk looking for the Watermark Door (didn't know it was on
Ocean Ave) I could sense right away there wasn't enough lights to
make an outsider feel safe.

First thing I did when I got to the boards was look left to make
sure no one was going to jump out form behind the container/store.

Bright, bright lights - they make a tourist feel good.

Yeah, I could see a walk thru, well done museum about the Morro Castle, but I
think the

AP also has Bud Abbott and Arthur Pryor in it's history.

[AsburyPark] Re: A New Board Walk Brilliantly Illuminated By Electricity to Dawn

2008-11-25 Thread Jack Pitzer
The concept of lighting in our boardwalk area is not a competition about who's
right and
wrong. 1903's Brilliant was much different then 2008, and you can't make a
fair, or
accurate comparison.
And, the discussion about lighting isn't just about how much is appropriate,
it's more
about what kind of equipment is being used.
At the moment, AP really isn't being a good neighbor to Ocean Grove because of
the
overblown lighting in the Casino Parking lot.
During most nights of the week, the boardwalk area is pretty much a ghost town,
and our
city is wasting lot's of money lighting up empty lot's.
The light on top of The Berkley would be more appropriate for a disaster then
nightly use.
I agree that lighting makes people feel safer, but the city didn't make enough
effort to
install the right kind of lighting fixtures, that fit better into the area they
are illuminating.
Remember about a year ago when I was looking into buying a telescope? Well, I
bought
one, and now, I have to go to the Ocean Grove beach, or elsewhere to use it,
because light
pollution is out of control.
I'd also suggest looking at last months National Geographic. The main article
is all about
light pollution, and ways to illuminate an area that are more realistic.

I sometimes feel like I live in a different place than some of the
posters. ap has been crazy busy the past few weekends as far as I can
tell, isn't it ALREADY an attraction. Maybe fun is an attraction.
Feels that way to me. Sat nite Stella looked busy, Paradise was packed
and throbbing with dancers. Wonder Bar looked humming, there were cars
all over the place.

it seems like there are a lot of people on the board trying to eat the
menu instead of the food. instead of living the coulda woulda shoulda
existence, how about getting out and diving into it? and dropping some
of your cash. lots of others are. you can be concerned about the
budget AND dig the place.

BTW drinks are affordable at Paradise and they had a special on
absolut. Paradise is a beautifully mixed crowd, lights and sound are
amazing. plus you get the buff men in cock socks. sorry guys it is
what it is.

you can spend a lot of time thinking ap (and life) could be better
than it is, but you'll just die without having tasted what is offered
which is pretty delicious. and you'll be as miserable and perception
challenged as the anonymous maubdy who only posts to bash Werner. or
the even more miserable code asshole who keeps getting off on giving
him violations. what is that guy's deal? and what in God's name sleeps
with him? he seems to be a perfect example of what Wilhelm Reich wrote
about in Listen Little Man. somebody's pawn, somebody's bitch. maybe
maubdy and he are the same person.?

The Hindenburgh disaster happened at Lakehurst, and people rarely
visit the memorial

since 9/11, but before that,
when it was open, I made a visit once. The person at the visitors

If I had my say, I'd steer our boardwalk area to be focused on music

Those are proven attractions, and if the price is right, they are
usually recession proof.
Austin TX thrives because of it's music and entertainment scene.
 Memphis has Beele street.
Nashville is all about music tourism.
NYC packs people into their theaters and concert halls, and below
that there's a myriad of
places that carry on the tradition of CBGBs etc.
AP once had that kind of draw, but the venues are disappearing, and
the boardwalk has
been made into a high end retail location that I predict will fail
big time this winter.
If AP had a rock and roll museum that highlighted Bruce and the
others who are tied to our
city, people would come from all over the US, Europe and the world
to check it out.
But, my thoughts on this are a complete waste, because it's just not
going to happen,
because our city doesn't recognize what it let slip thru it's fingers.

You're right, AP is an attraction when music events are in town. Without them,
it would be
more of a ghost town.
For me, the point is that it's obvious what will bring new people to the city,
entertainment
and dining.
I think that should be the focus of new PR campaigns. The high end retail on
the
boardwalk isn't going to succeed year round in my opinion, and it's probably
not going to
succeed in the summer months too, because in our economy, people aren't showing
up at
a beach to go shopping at a mall.

Glenn,
In defense of Werner, you said a LOT in just a few paragraphs! Funny,
Jesus was a victim of His own people, too! This forum, although
mainly about Asbury Park, the City's Redevelopment, the starts, stops,
C8, one and two, the parking meter fiasco, the Wonder Bar, a
successful undertaking, which opened, closed and reopened and on and on.

Werner, a gifted and talented individual, with a lot to offer in
historical value, gets short shrifted, for a variety of reasons,
mainly by 3 people in this group, who never post unless they want to
put in a dig or criticism, which NOBODY of conscience, cares for and
only divert attention away from REAL issues. By and large, a private
individual, super intelligent and knowlegable about the historical
aspects of this small city, that a lot of people want to lay claim to.

Then there are others, including myself, who get jumped on, if we
don't agree or have a different point of view, which in America is
allowed by law to agree or disagree, but in this group, it can be
almost fatal! The powers that be, will have you harrassed, arrested
and jailed, if you don't dance to their particular tune, which now
that Obama has been elected, true justice may prevail and the
gestapo tactics of officials run amok, will end!

There ARE people who agree with everything Werner states! I'm one of
them! He is right on point, when he explains WHY the lights for
example, are deficient. He explains WHY, the Palace SHOULDN'T have
been demolished, JR! It was a LANDMARK! It spoke of what Asbury Park
IS/WAS and COULD have been! We WERE a resort, dotted with small and
large hotels/motels/inns, etc. A Coney Island, South!

When I read posters speaking of frozen custard, hot dogs and lemonade,
I think of what I found when I moved here, even after the riots! If
the boardwalk had been demolished, I NEVER would have known! As a
Catholic, I could never have Madam Marie read my palm, but I wanted
her to; just for fun. My kids played miniature golf many times,
before it was closed, went to the movies at the Baronet, bowled at
Asbury Lanes. Kid stuff!

There are some mean spirited people who post in this group, who really
need a life anytime they take an innocent like Werner to pick on!
Thanks Glenn!

attacks, yet still shares his wisdom for the greater good of the
city. Let us recall that those attacks have cost Werner money and

I ask all of you to put yourselves in Werner's shoes and think again.

How many of us have actually been forced into a corner without a

With a few exceptions that I am aware of, many of Werner's critics on
this forum have never met Werner. I have. Werner could win the

My best advice to all of you is that if you choose to attack, make
certain that your know your opponent well. That man in the scary

As we watch the economy bundgy jumping, we must realize that any
one of us may face the budget that Werner deals with daily. Would

I also think you are missing the point that the lighting was a novelty back
then.
We've been living with outdoor lighting for more then a century now, and it's a
normal part
of life.
The question in AP is simple - Are the fixtures being used appropriate for the
usage?
Are they cost effective? Could better fixtures have been utilized, that
would've done the
same job, more appropriately?
And, what about the idea of being a better neighbor to Ocean Grove?

Yeah, but why should Ocean Grove have to deal with AP's excessive lighting?
And why should the city be paying huge electric bills for lights that are on at
times when
there's nobody around?
Appropriate lighting is great. Excessive lighting, like what we currently have,
is a waste,
not attractive and is an annoyance to residents who have to deal with it.

2008-11-25 Thread Jack Pitzer
From National Geographic;

Of all the pollutions we face, light pollution is perhaps the most easily
remedied. Simple
changes in lighting design and installation yield immediate changes in the
amount of light
spilled into the atmosphere and, often, immediate energy savings.

It was once thought that light pollution only affected astronomers, who need
to see the
night sky in all its glorious clarity. And, in fact, some of the earliest civic
efforts to control
light pollution—in Flagstaff, Arizona, half a century ago—were made to protect
the view
from Lowell Observatory, which sits high above that city. Flagstaff has
tightened its
regulations since then, and in 2001 it was declared the first International
Dark Sky City. By
now the effort to control light pollution has spread around the globe. More and
more cities
and even entire countries, such as the Czech Republic, have committed
themselves to
reducing unwanted glare.

I don't think anyone wants the city to be dark and unsafe, what I
object to, are the types of lighting. Parts of town look like a
railyard, and nothing looks warm and inviting under mercury vapor
street lighting. You could twice as much light of the proper type on
the boardwalk and it would feel more inviting. Whith the super tall
streetlamps that are there now, you have pools of very ugly dazzling
light, then pools of shadow all down the boardwalk. Lower, more
attactive poles, with a yellow tinged light would make the place
safer and more attractive.

Like I said before, the two, bright blue/white, humming floodlights
on the north side of the Casino are a very good, bad example. The
rest of the OG boardwalk is well lit, with simple low lights, but it
is a comforting attracive lighting, that also gives the feeling of
safety.

You are right, and Ocean Groves boardwalk lighting is absolutely perfect, and
could be
used as a model as to what would be nice on our boardwalk and in the
surrounding areas.
Same goes for the lighting on the promenade leading to the Auditorium. Just
right, not
over bright, and not flooding the surrounding homes.

Try to find the nice young lady from Howell singing 1st Soprano.

I imagine they will be singing Christmas songs, but they just
recorded an a copella verson of Born to Run. Considering the venue,
I'm guessing they will sneak it in.

There has historically been opposition to the custom of the Christmas
tree because of its alleged pagan origins. Thus, Oliver Cromwell
preached against the heathen traditions of Christmas carols and
decorated trees. As pastor Henry Schwan of Cleveland OH in 1851
decorating what was likely the first Christmas tree in an American
church. His parishioners condemned the idea as a Pagan practice.

There are various legends regarding the origin of the Christmas tree,
often relating to Saint Boniface. Thus, in one version, Boniface
disrupted a pagan child sacrifice at an oak tree, flattening the oak
with a blow of his fist. A small fir sprang up in place of the oak,
which Boniface told the pagans represented Christ.[1] In some
accounts, Martin Luther is credited with adding lights and decoration
to fir branches traditionally hung from ceilings.[2]

Condemnation of the Christmas tree as pagan has been based on a
passage in Jeremiah,

Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not
dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of
the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They
deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with
hammers, that it move not. (Jeremiah 10:2-4, KJV).

Christmas traditions in general have often been associated with
paganism in 19th century scholarship. Robert Chambers in his 1832 Book
of Days notes that the festivities of Christmas originally derived
from the Roman Saturnalia , had afterwards been intermingled with the
ceremonies observed by the British Druids at the period of
winter-solstice, and at a subsequent period became incorporated with
the grim mythology of the ancient Saxons. Two popular observances
belonging to Christmas are more especially derived from the worship of
our pagan ancestors—the hanging up of the mistletoe and the burning of
the Yule log. Regarding the Christmas tree itself, Chambers notes that
it seems to be a very ancient custom in Germany, and is probably a
remnant of the splendid and fanciful pageants of the middle ages.
Other traditions relating to Christmas that may derive from Germanic
pagan practices include the Christmas ham, Yule Goat, stuffing
stockings, elements of Santa Claus and his nocturnal ride through the
sky, and elements of Alpine folklore.[3]

There are also some accounts that place the earliest Christmas trees
in the Baltic (variously Estonia or Lativa), while in actuality the
custom was introduced there in the 1920s.

Yes - Christmas Trees.

You see, Christmas is also a cultural part of America. A recognized
federal holiday. Many Jews who are proud of their American Culture
take part fully in the American tradition of Christmas, without the
religious part of the celebration.

They wouldn't dream of casting an insult by changing the name of
Christmas.

Better to be inclusive and be part of the American holiday.

[AsburyPark] A.K.A. Thanksgiving in Asbury Park

2008-11-25 Thread MarioAPNJ
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

a.k.a. “Thanksgiving in Asbury Park” ;-)

Tonight at 8:00 on ABC

==

Charlie Brown: We've got ANOTHER holiday to worry about. It seems
Thanksgiving Day is upon us.

Sally Brown: I haven't even finished eating all of my Halloween candy.

Linus: Blah.

[after singing Over the River and Through the Woods to Grandmother's House
We Go.]

Charlie Brown: Well, there's only one thing wrong with that. My grandmother
lives in a condominium.

Sally Brown: I went down to buy a turkey tree and all they have are things
for Christmas. Anyway, why should I give thanks on Thanksgiving? What have I
got to be thankful for? All it does is make more work for us at school.

Peppermint Patty: What kind of Thanksgiving dinner is this? Where's the
turkey, Chuck? Don't you know anything about Thanksgiving dinners? Where's the
mashed potatoes? Where's the cranberry sauce? Where's the pumpkin pie?

Marcie: Those early Pilgrims were thankful for what had happened to them,
and we should be thankful, too. We should just be thankful for being together.

Sally Brown: Do you know what they want us to do? They want us to write an
essay on Stanley Miles.

Charlie Brown: Don't you mean Miles Standish?

Sally Brown: I can't be expected to remember all those names.

Lucy: [holding football] Oh, Charlie Brown! Charlie Brown!

Charlie Brown: She must think I'm the stupidest person alive.

Lucy: I'll hold the ball and you run up and kick it.

Charlie Brown: Hold it? Ha! You'll just pull it away and I'll fall flat on
my back and kill myself.

Lucy: I wouldn't do that. It's Thanksgiving. One of our most cherished
traditions is the Thanksgiving football game.

Charlie Brown: Gee, I guess if it is a tradition, it would be an honor. She
wouldn't pull it away if it is a tradition. This time I'm gonna kick that ball
 clear to the moon!
[he runs to kick the ball, but Lucy pulls it away]

I assume your question is to Jack since the seller is calling them
Christmas trees and Jack wonders why he doesn't change it.

Perhaps it would be a good move, from a marketing
perspective, to
   just call them Holiday
trees, wreaths, and garlands
If you think about the overwhelming retail aspect of
Christmas, I
   doubt that people who
are trolling around the mall are thinking about the baby jesus
   when they are surrounded
by decorations.
Actually, if there were a Jesus, and he were alive today, he'd
probably want to collect royalties from all the merchandise
sold in
   his name.

Hmmm I am not sure where this news aired from, but my first
question would be:

Should we really be out there singing: On the First Day of
Christmas, Ma-Tola-Gave-To-Us, a Christmas Tree inside the Car-Rou-
Sel?

Shouldn't this be a CITY activity, not a DEVELOPER activity?

Happy Festival of Lights, Tommy! Yep, I get it.

it's on the owner's property, not public.

It's the season and real smart they can turn the arcade into a
shopping/entertainment center - in December.

And it should be good for downtown, who has to learn and take
advantage of the boardwalk draw and feed off of it.

That's FREE marketing for the downtown and the rest of the city.

Learn to capitalize on it.

A guy once had a pizzeria. He first complained that McDonalds moved
across the street (must of meant he was in a good spot, right). He
thought it would hurt his business.

In the long run, his business increased and he gained additional
parking from the lot and additional traffic

get it?

Yep, Oak, I get it... I lost site of the ownership. Man, I was just
trying to stand on Tommy's side for once! Thank you for putting the
ownership into perspective.

The ad doesn't show up using Firefox instead of IE.

Works fine for me! Using Mozilla 5.0.
