Isn't the simplest, and most obvious attraction to AP it's music scene? Yeah, but unless you are a history buff, or a local, how many people would actually take the time to visit just for the Morro Castle? The Hindenburgh disaster happened at Lakehurst, and people rarely visit the memorial there. I'm not sure if the airbase has been closed to the public since 9/11, but before that, when it was open, I made a visit once. The person at the visitors center said that maybe a few 100 people visit every year, with less as the years go by. If I had my say, I'd steer our boardwalk area to be focused on music and entertainment. Those are proven attractions, and if the price is right, they are usually recession proof. Austin TX thrives because of it's music and entertainment scene. Memphis has Beele street. Nashville is all about music tourism. NYC packs people into their theaters and concert halls, and below that there's a myriad of places that carry on the tradition of CBGBs etc. AP once had that kind of draw, but the venues are disappearing, and the boardwalk has been made into a high end retail location that I predict will fail big time this winter. If AP had a rock and roll museum that highlighted Bruce and the others who are tied to our city, people would come from all over the US, Europe and the world to check it out. But, my thoughts on this are a complete waste, because it's just not going to happen, because our city doesn't recognize what it let slip thru it's fingers. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer hinge98@ wrote: Isn't the simplest, and most obvious attraction to AP it's music scene? Oak is that really an ad for AP from 1903? The lights were Brilliantly Illuminated until dawn? That should settle the arguement taking place on this board over beach front lighting. I smell complete vindication. They new back then that visitors wanted a brilliantly lit place at night so they would feel safe (not to mention awake to stay out longer). It's just plain common sense. There is no contrary view grounded in the reality of tourism. Even when I was there Sunday night, when we walked onto the boardwalk looking for the Watermark Door (didn't know it was on Ocean Ave) I could sense right away there wasn't enough lights to make an outsider feel safe. Yeah, I could see a walk thru, well done museum about the Morro Castle, but I think the public would need a reintroduction to it, because I doubt many people living today still have a conscience connection between AP and that disaster. AP also has Bud Abbott and Arthur Pryor in it's history. [AsburyPark] Re: A New Board Walk Brilliantly Illuminated By Electricity to Dawn
The concept of lighting in our boardwalk area is not a competition about who's right and wrong. 1903's Brilliant was much different then 2008, and you can't make a fair, or accurate comparison. And, the discussion about lighting isn't just about how much is appropriate, it's more about what kind of equipment is being used. At the moment, AP really isn't being a good neighbor to Ocean Grove because of the overblown lighting in the Casino Parking lot. During most nights of the week, the boardwalk area is pretty much a ghost town, and our city is wasting lot's of money lighting up empty lot's. The light on top of The Berkley would be more appropriate for a disaster then nightly use. I agree that lighting makes people feel safer, but the city didn't make enough effort to install the right kind of lighting fixtures, that fit better into the area they are illuminating. Remember about a year ago when I was looking into buying a telescope? Well, I bought one, and now, I have to go to the Ocean Grove beach, or elsewhere to use it, because light pollution is out of control. I'd also suggest looking at last months National Geographic. The main article is all about light pollution, and ways to illuminate an area that are more realistic. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oak is that really an ad for AP from 1903? You're right, AP is an attraction when music events are in town. Without them, it would be more of a ghost town. For me, the point is that it's obvious what will bring new people to the city, entertainment and dining. I think that should be the focus of new PR campaigns. The high end retail on the boardwalk isn't going to succeed year round in my opinion, and it's probably not going to succeed in the summer months too, because in our economy, people aren't showing up at a beach to go shopping at a mall. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Gabrielle Obre [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I sometimes feel like I live in a different place than some of the posters. ap has been crazy busy the past few weekends as far as I can tell, isn't it ALREADY an attraction. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf oakdorf@ wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer hinge98@ wrote: Isn't the simplest, and most obvious attraction to AP it's music scene? Glenn, In defense of Werner, you said a LOT in just a few paragraphs! Funny, Jesus was a victim of His own people, too! This forum, although mainly about Asbury Park, the City's Redevelopment, the starts, stops, C8, one and two, the parking meter fiasco, the Wonder Bar, a successful undertaking, which opened, closed and reopened and on and on. Werner, a gifted and talented individual, with a lot to offer in historical value, gets short shrifted, for a variety of reasons, mainly by 3 people in this group, who never post unless they want to put in a dig or criticism, which NOBODY of conscience, cares for and only divert attention away from REAL issues. By and large, a private individual, super intelligent and knowlegable about the historical aspects of this small city, that a lot of people want to lay claim to. Then there are others, including myself, who get jumped on, if we don't agree or have a different point of view, which in America is allowed by law to agree or disagree, but in this group, it can be almost fatal! The powers that be, will have you harrassed, arrested and jailed, if you don't dance to their particular tune, which now that Obama has been elected, true justice may prevail and the gestapo tactics of officials run amok, will end! There ARE people who agree with everything Werner states! I'm one of them! He is right on point, when he explains WHY the lights for example, are deficient. He explains WHY, the Palace SHOULDN'T have been demolished, JR! It was a LANDMARK! It spoke of what Asbury Park IS/WAS and COULD have been! We WERE a resort, dotted with small and large hotels/motels/inns, etc. A Coney Island, South! When I read posters speaking of frozen custard, hot dogs and lemonade, I think of what I found when I moved here, even after the riots! If the boardwalk had been demolished, I NEVER would have known! As a Catholic, I could never have Madam Marie read my palm, but I wanted her to; just for fun. My kids played miniature golf many times, before it was closed, went to the movies at the Baronet, bowled at Asbury Lanes. Kid stuff! There are some mean spirited people who post in this group, who really need a life anytime they take an innocent like Werner to pick on! I also think you are missing the point that the lighting was a novelty back then. We've been living with outdoor lighting for more then a century now, and it's a normal part of life. From National Geographic; Of all the pollutions we face, light pollution is perhaps the most easily remedied. Simple changes in lighting design and installation yield immediate changes in the amount of light spilled into the atmosphere and, often, immediate energy savings. It was once thought that light pollution only affected astronomers, who need to see the night sky in all its glorious clarity. And, in fact, some of the earliest civic efforts to control light pollutionin Flagstaff, Arizona, half a century agowere made to protect the view from Lowell Observatory, which sits high above that city. Flagstaff has tightened its regulations since then, and in 2001 it was declared the first International Dark Sky City. By now the effort to control light pollution has spread around the globe. More and more cities and even entire countries, such as the Czech Republic, have committed themselves to reducing unwanted glare. I don't think anyone wants the city to be dark and unsafe, what I object to, are the types of lighting. Parts of town look like a railyard, and nothing looks warm and inviting under mercury vapor street lighting. You could twice as much light of the proper type on the boardwalk and it would feel more inviting. Whith the super tall streetlamps that are there now, you have pools of very ugly dazzling light, then pools of shadow all down the boardwalk. Lower, more attactive poles, with a yellow tinged light would make the place safer and more attractive. Like I said before, the two, bright blue/white, humming floodlights on the north side of the Casino are a very good, bad example. The rest of the OG boardwalk is well lit, with simple low lights, but it is a comforting attracive lighting, that also gives the feeling of safety. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, wernerapnj [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Things were done a certain way in 1900 Therefore - it should be done that way now. On Friday night at 6 in the Grand Arcade between Paramount and CH there will be a performance by the NJ Rock n Roll Chorus. Try to find the nice young lady from Howell singing 1st Soprano. I imagine they will be singing Christmas songs, but they just recorded an a copella verson of Born to Run. Considering the venue, I'm guessing they will sneak it in. I hope you enjoy. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Asbury Park plans tree-lighting for Sunday STAFF REPORT NOVEMBER 25, 2008 ASBURY PARK Madison Marquette will hold this year's holiday tree lighting at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Convention Hall Arcade on the boardwalk. There are various legends regarding the origin of the Christmas tree, often relating to Saint Boniface. Thus, in one version, Boniface disrupted a pagan child sacrifice at an oak tree, flattening the oak with a blow of his fist. A small fir sprang up in place of the oak, which Boniface told the pagans represented Christ.[1] In some accounts, Martin Luther is credited with adding lights and decoration to fir branches traditionally hung from ceilings.[2] Condemnation of the Christmas tree as pagan has been based on a passage in Jeremiah, Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. (Jeremiah 10:2-4, KJV). Christmas traditions in general have often been associated with paganism in 19th century scholarship. Robert Chambers in his 1832 Book of Days notes that the festivities of Christmas originally derived from the Roman Saturnalia , had afterwards been intermingled with the ceremonies observed by the British Druids at the period of winter-solstice, and at a subsequent period became incorporated with the grim mythology of the ancient Saxons. Two popular observances belonging to Christmas are more especially derived from the worship of our pagan ancestorsthe hanging up of the mistletoe and the burning of the Yule log. Regarding the Christmas tree itself, Chambers notes that it seems to be a very ancient custom in Germany, and is probably a remnant of the splendid and fanciful pageants of the middle ages. Other traditions relating to Christmas that may derive from Germanic pagan practices include the Christmas ham, Yule Goat, stuffing stockings, elements of Santa Claus and his nocturnal ride through the sky, and elements of Alpine folklore.[3] There are also some accounts that place the earliest Christmas trees in the Baltic (variously Estonia or Lativa), while in actuality the custom was introduced there in the 1920s. Yes - Christmas Trees. You see, Christmas is also a cultural part of America. A recognized federal holiday. Many Jews who are proud of their American Culture take part fully in the American tradition of Christmas, without the religious part of the celebration. They wouldn't dream of casting an insult by changing the name of Christmas. Better to be inclusive and be part of the American holiday. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: But, don't some Jewish people have trees in their homes, just because they like them? --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright justifiedright@ wrote: Because they aren't holiday trees. [AsburyPark] A.K.A. Thanksgiving in Asbury Park
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving a.k.a. “Thanksgiving in Asbury Park” ;-) Tonight at 8:00 on ABC == Charlie Brown: We've got ANOTHER holiday to worry about. It seems Thanksgiving Day is upon us. Sally Brown: I haven't even finished eating all of my Halloween candy. Linus: Blah. [after singing Over the River and Through the Woods to Grandmother's House We Go.] Charlie Brown: Well, there's only one thing wrong with that. My grandmother lives in a condominium. Sally Brown: I went down to buy a turkey tree and all they have are things for Christmas. Anyway, why should I give thanks on Thanksgiving? What have I got to be thankful for? All it does is make more work for us at school. Peppermint Patty: What kind of Thanksgiving dinner is this? Where's the turkey, Chuck? Don't you know anything about Thanksgiving dinners? Where's the mashed potatoes? Where's the cranberry sauce? Where's the pumpkin pie? Marcie: Those early Pilgrims were thankful for what had happened to them, and we should be thankful, too. We should just be thankful for being together. Sally Brown: Do you know what they want us to do? They want us to write an essay on Stanley Miles. Charlie Brown: Don't you mean Miles Standish? Sally Brown: I can't be expected to remember all those names. Lucy: [holding football] Oh, Charlie Brown! Charlie Brown! Charlie Brown: She must think I'm the stupidest person alive. Lucy: I'll hold the ball and you run up and kick it. Charlie Brown: Hold it? Ha! You'll just pull it away and I'll fall flat on my back and kill myself. Lucy: I wouldn't do that. It's Thanksgiving. One of our most cherished traditions is the Thanksgiving football game. Charlie Brown: Gee, I guess if it is a tradition, it would be an honor. She wouldn't pull it away if it is a tradition. Hmmm I am not sure where this news aired from, but my first question would be: Should we really be out there singing: On the First Day of Christmas, Ma-Tola-Gave-To-Us, a Christmas Tree inside the Car-Rou- Sel? Shouldn't this be a CITY activity, not a DEVELOPER activity? Happy Festival of Lights, Tommy! Yep, I get it.
