Saw the city's backhoe trying to shovel  out the street sweeper's driveway,it
got stuck and then they left-have not seen or heard anything since did get the
reverse 911 call-thought they might try to do something with the street-not- a
chance nothing from Neptune either-

Arg. I saw one go by last night but I don't think they've plowed 6th ave since.
I got a *red alert* phone call from the police last night and again today. The
one today (recorded message) apologized for the lack of services and that they
would be contacting outside contractors. We are still totally snowed in. My mom
in North Jersey lives on a quiet dead-end street and she was plowed out. This

5th Avenue from Grand Ave to the beachfront has been impassable for 2 days. Not
a plow in sight.

This is the worst snow response I have ever seen in 30 years here. And there
have been similar storms. Looking around, it appears that Sunset Ave and Park
Ave across the lake from me are also snow-bound.

The risk from lack of access is huge... there is no way fire and emergency
services to help people in parts of the City if needed.

My conclusion over the past several years that Asbury Park is dysfunctional
appears to be panning out on many levels.

I have never seen such an incredibly non-existent snow removal plan in my life.
My street is a nightmare. My downstairs neighbor is a nurse, and it's going to
take all day to get her car out. The only plowing that occurred left 1 car wide
lane in the middle of the street, and there's 3 car widths of heavy snow
between. What a joke. Where did all the money go that AP made from parking?

The issue is not money... recall that the City has not had any problem spending
money it does not have for the past decade.

The problem is not having the skill set to deal with this. The two most

True.
It's amazing that the city had plenty of warning for this storm, yet as it
unfolded there was no road sanding or salting, no early plowing, nothing. Even

The issue is not money... recall that the City has not had any problem spending
money it does not have for the past decade.

The problem is not having the skill set to deal with this. The two most
experienced public works employees were relieved/fired/retired last month.

True.
It's amazing that the city had plenty of warning for this storm, yet as it
unfolded there was no road sanding or salting, no early plowing, nothing. Even
Main street is a nightmare.

2010-12-28 Thread wernerapnj
I'm taking your question as facetious. Waiting until there is several feet
accumulated is ridiculous.

The proper process is to start sanding/salting when snowfall starts. Followed
by clearing during the storm so that accumulations on streets do not occur
leading to the stuck vehicles you mention.

Dealing with a heavy snowfall is s much art as it is science and requires
experienced leadership to be effective.

Waiting until a storm is over and then trying to address it is clearly
irresponsible.
Certainly there can be extenuating circumstances (available resources,
equipment/manpower), but the basic process is well known.

worse if your trying to manage commercial properties and clear lots. Some towns

just hope you dont get tickets for not shoveling.

literally in the middle of the street. at around 2nd and main there is an
abandoned taxi, looks like it was trying to make a left turn but got stuck.
NOT A SINGLE COP or FD or city personnel in sight. i peeked in the firehouse
as there was a APFD truck w/ plow outside - about 4 men were sitting having
coffee, looking out the window...

cars are not only double parked, they are IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD.

my neighbor is a volunteer citizen on patrol. when he called the PD, the
dispatcher said they city had NO PLAN and no contracts in place for
plowing and that the city manger was driving around trying to come up with
a plan.

she reported that they were trying to get the side streets plowed tonite or

[AsburyPark] Re: Has anyone seen a snow plow yet

2010-12-28 Thread terrariumlife
Are we really this pathetic that we have to freak out about not being able to
drive our cars around? I know that it's important for ambulances and fire
trucks to be able to get around, but I found it quite comforting (for one day
only - today everyone was as out as they could be to buy bread, salt, or
whatever they couldn't walk to get) to be able to walk around the area and not
be surrounded by hundreds of cars. All that I could think was this is how it
should be. F--- cars!

People freak out about a little bit of snow, as if it's all over. Is your home
life that bad? Maybe go outside? 33 degrees and full sun isn't that bad,
actually. I'm usually the one that complains about the weather (in the spring
and summer when it's not hot enough). This is just reality. We live at 40
degrees latitude in a humid temperate/humid subtropical climate. This is the
temperate side. It snows here. I don't want to be a jerk, but I feel like we
can do better as humans. My rant isn't fully directed toward list subscribers,
but I think there are more important things to worry about than if your street
is plowed. Ever hear of hydraulic fracturing?

I was worried about my neighbor getting to her job (she's a nurse) but
honestly, I don't mind being snowed in. Plus I got plenty of excersize. What
worries me the most is how are any emergency service vehicles going to get to
people in case of emergency. Currently there's a stuck garbage truck at the end
of my street, and a stuck tractor trailer on main.
Mostly, just think about what the Chilean miners endured. We have nothing to
complain about.

I don't think the problem is about driving cars around. If people have an
emergency, vehicles can't get through. Others NEED to get to work (either
because they are are nurses/doctors or bc they are simply supporting their
family and don't have the most understanding of employers). Moreover, it is all
well and good to walk around and be peaceful about it, but I don't keep a ton
of food in my house and I am not walking down the middle of the street with a
17 month old on my back. Luckily, I took this week off from work anyway because
if not, there is no way my employer in NYC would be understanding about me
taking 3 or 4 days for a snow storm. People in North Jersey where my mother
lives have been driving since Monday afternoon and she claims they also got a
lot of snow. It is about planning and execution as Werner said. The Stone Pony
cancelled shows through Thursday? That is four days for a storm. In my mind,
that is unacceptable. And just because it isn't as bad as what the miners went
through- I mean how could you even compare to something like that?- Doesn't
mean we don't have a right to have our town execute a cohesive plan to clean
our streets after a snow storm.

I have to add though that it is not just Asbury- the whole shore area seems to
be having trouble. I grew up in North Jersey as I've said before and the worst
storm I ever experiences there took 48 hours max to clean up, usually it is 24

[AsburyPark] NJ snow removal is a joke

2010-12-28 Thread dfsavgny

I tried to leave AP at 2:30 pm today to head back to NY to go to work tomorrow
and dig out there as well. This is after digging out 3 cars and a path around
my whole corner property - which btw no one else seemed to do.

Asbury Ave was plowed yesterday and finally bond street in the middle of the
night. It woke me up and I saw the front loader make a mountain at least 12
feet high in front of my driveway gates.

Back to trying to leave AP. First I head down Main St to go to the Quick Check
in BB. Halted at Corlies Rte 33. Main St blocked. A state or county road? Turn
down Rte 33 and figure go right to GSP. Halted right after memorial. All the
cars have to back up because we can't get through. A State or county main road?
Disgraceful. It gets better. Try Asbury Ave. Make it to Jimmy's. Fed Ex truck
stuck. Back up again. Wander around (go down and back up) several streets.
Finally make my way back to Memorial. I try Sunset with success (but slow). Get
to Rte 35 and decide better chance there then go back to AP circle and Asbury
Ave.

Only 1 lane barely open. Going fine and see southbound traffic stuck behind
tractor trailers stuck going into Wegmans. We get stuck behind traffic a little
north. Hoping to turn left at Rte 36 and get to GSP. Get to Rte 36 intersection
around 5 pm. 2.5 hours in car by then. Police won't allow left onto Rte 36
(although south bound 35 are allowed to make right).

Continue up Rte 35 north and see southbound traffic backed up for miles.
Finally can make left onto Shrewsbury Ave (cleared of snow) and within 15
minutes or so on GSP and sail home.

A usual 45-60 minute trip home to SI takes 4 hours. People here on SI
complaining about NYC response to snow. But I can tell you that the side street
I live on is in better shape than I road I traveled on today in NJ with the
exception of Shrewsbury Ave and Newman Springs Road.

Shame oon the state of NJ, Monmouth County and the City of Asbury Park and
adjoining shore towns. The amount of money spent on public works and pensions
and the level of response is disgraceful. I am paying almost $12K in taxes in
NJ and I am being robbed.

The main routes (33, 71, 35) should have been all completely cleared by today
with all lanes open. There is no excuse for this.

2010-12-28 Thread dfsavgny

So maybe I owe apology to AP. Hear back from City Manager. State never showed
up to do Main St/71. County failed to plow Asbury and Memorial. City tied up
keeping clear for ambulances and escorting to hospital. So let the state and
county hear about it.

[AsburyPark] Re: Has anyone seen a snow plow yet

2010-12-28 Thread Hinge
Once people start thinking they are entitled is the beginning of the end. This
was a disaster class snow storm. We all had plenty of warning. The big picture
is not about the response, but how the people are equipped to deal with it.
Complaining after the fact does nothing. The real focus should be on why did
people ignore the warnings and chose to drive, and then get stuck and block the
process of cleaning the mess. We've come to a point in our culture when we
either blame others because people don't want to accept the blame, or blame the
government that we think is too big for not serving us. Honestly, toughen up
and get over it.

you know what, it isnt about walking or cars or about what everyone else is
doing.

as mentioned, i was happy to walk. i enjoy the snow. However, when i am
unemployeed my spouses' income is essential to us.

Asbury would be really fantasic if it were not for the city government. I
suppose i have been fortunate to have previously lived in towns and cities
where things ran smoothly and we didn't notice when things went as planned.

but the fact is, Asbury Park did NOT plan for this even though they had 48
hours plus notice. can you imagine if there was (god forbid) a terrorist
attack, nuclear accident or natural event such as a flood or eathquake? It's
be a free for all.

The city of AP has let me and my neighbors down over and over and I'm fed
up, this is just one more thing to add to my list.

- this fall 3 of the 7 houses on my street were broken into

- one car window broken by kids, one car window broken by the neighbors
who got into a fight (the police responded to break up the fight, noted the
property damage but did nothing to prosecute the responsible party or notify
me, the owner),

- the unreasonable traffic tickets (1. lights not on while wipers were on,
despite it not raining, got that dismissed. car parked too close to traffic
light - i was in the middle of a block and there was no light, that was
dismissed too). dad got no seatbelt while moving the car across the street
for alt parking by THE FIRE DEPT- all within last yr.

-my female neighbor who was arrested by APPD (who called her names i wont
repeat) for hitting her husband when she attempted to defend herself from
his repeated physical abuse. she was taken to monmouth county jail overnite
and prosecuted for assault becuase he had a 'fresh' mark on him when hers
were old.

 - the drug dealers next door the PD doesn't do anything about, despite eye
witness acoounts from a number of neighbors

- i will also note the obvious which doesnt need mentioning - the waterfront
redevelopment.

yea, save your this is the real world / this is AP speech. I know it. But
guess what? I have choices. I am exersizing my CHOICE of where to live and
im selling my house and moving (a decision we made months ago).

I complain about this snow plowing because I PAY TAXES. these are services i
have pre-paid for and have not recieved. just because all the jersey shore
is not being plowed DOESNT MAKE IT RIGHT.

I moved here because i wanted to help make a difference and support AP. I am
a designer, an artist, and I wanted to be surrounded by like mided folks. I
have been involved and tried to help and volunteer.

I love the people - all walks of life - except the corrupt people in office
who run this town.

I am not the first and will not be the last to leave because of this.

all well and good to walk around and be peaceful about it, but I don't keep

anyway because if not, there is no way my employer in NYC would be
understanding about me taking 3 or 4 days for a snow storm. People in North
Jersey where my mother lives have been driving since Monday afternoon and
she claims they also got a lot of snow. It is about planning and execution
as Werner said. The Stone Pony cancelled shows through Thursday? That is
four days for a storm. In my mind, that is unacceptable. And just because it
isn't as bad as what the miners went through- I mean how could you even
compare to something like that?- Doesn't mean we don't have a right to have
our town execute a cohesive plan to clean our streets after a snow storm.

about what the Chilean miners endured. We have nothing to complain about.

It's amazing to me that so many people these days are anti-government, but when
it doesn't work for them personally, it's the first thing they blame for their
troubles.
If you aren't happy, run for city office and try and make a difference. I think
about it all the time. Maybe it's an eye opening experience about the reality
of our city. Maybe not. But honestly, the amount of bitching about this
snowstorm is ridiculous. It will be past history in a few days. Not life
changing for a vast majority of us. If anything, it should be life changing in
the way that it should teach each and every one of us to be prepared. If you
have plenty of food and water, then unless it's life or death you should stay
home, not drive, and let the streets be cleaned ASAP.
But no, people don't prepare, they try and drive, get stuck, and block
progress. Right now, there's a taxi stuck on Main St. in AP, right in the
middle of the street, for at least the past 12 hours. Who's fault is that?
Sometimes, people just need to be patient and stay home. Yes, your job might
not be happy with that, but realistically speaking, what's more important, your
job, your safety, or being part of a bigger picture where people think about
we instead of me?

Asbury would be really fantasic if it were not for the city government. I

but the fact is, Asbury Park did NOT plan for this even though they had 48

So what you're saying is, if someone has a job as a paramedic, heart surgeon or
air traffic controller, they should just stay home until city, county and state
governments mount an adequate response to the snow?

While I agree with your point about taking action instead of complaining, this
is one case where the government response to an important need was inadequate.
For example, Route 35 in Ocean Township looked like a war zone, even at 11 pm
on Tuesday. At the same time, the parking lots of the Monmouth Mall, Wegman's,
and even Red Lobster were all infinitely better than the state highway. Why
are these private enterprises so much more capable of clearing the snow?

...and I'm a fairly liberal Democrat, but I can admit when the public sector
F's up.

I think we live in a hypocritical culture. Some people are all for smaller
government but when it happens, and people feel the loss, they complain that
somethings wrong. I find this to be ridiculous.
The same people preach about personal responsibility...
Ok, so we were getting report after report about a weather issue...did the
paramedic, air traffic controller or heart surgeon make plans for a disaster?
Probably not.
Instead, when the disaster hit, it's easier to bitch about it than take the so
called personal responsibilty and be prepared.
We ALL heard the warnings. Yet how many of us got our cars stuck after the fact
while trying to get things we should have had in the first place?
What's more important? Having milk for coffee after forgetting to get some, or
risking getting your car stuck and screwing with snow clean up progress?
