[AsburyPark] Dinner to Honor Mr. Frank Budd
Dear Constituents, I am writing to invite you to take part in honoring Mr. Frank Budd, arguably, the greatest athlete to ever grace the Asbury Park athletic scene. Many of you may be aware that on October 30, 2006 the Asbury Park Board of Education passed a resolution naming the Asbury Park High School Track and Field Oval after Mr. Budd. In light of this action, on February 23rd a dinner will be hosted by the Shore Athletic Club at the Jumping Brook Country Club in Neptune, NJ, with proceeds benefiting the Frank Budd Memorial Scholarship and to help erect a monument in Mr. Budds honor at the Asbury Park High School Stadium. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Mr. Budds athletic accomplishments, Frank graduated from Asbury Park High School in 1958. During his time as a Blue Bishop, Frank was a member of the Varsity Basketball Team, was a First Team All-State Football player, and an All-American Track and Field performer. Frank attended Villanova University on a full athletic scholarship and was a three time NCAA track champion. He participated in the 100 and 200 yard dashes, the 4x100, 4x200 and the mile relay. In 1960, while still a student at Villanova, Frank made the United States Olympic Team and competed in the Olympic Games in Rome, Italy in the 100 yard dash, for which he was a finalist, and as a member of the 4 x 100 relay team. In 1962 Frank broke the 20-year-old 100 yard dash record of 9.3 seconds by running a new world record of 9.2 seconds. After this feat, Frank Budd was dubbed The Worlds Fastest Human Alive. After Franks graduation from Villanova University in 1962, he played professional football for the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins and did a stint in the Canadian Professional Football League. Frank has since been selected by the Asbury Park Press as Athlete of the Century and was inducted into the Asbury Park High School distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame in 2003. Given all his accomplishments it is clear why we should honor Mr. Budd and hold him up as a role model for our children in Asbury Park. You can participate in honoring him in the following ways. First, you can attend the event on February 23rd. Tickets are $75 each. Second you can purchase an ad in the ad booklet for the event. [AsburyPark] A recent OP/ED I had published in the TriCity News
Dear Constituents, Below is an Op/Ed of mine that was published on Thursday in the TriCity News. It is a response to Mr. Jacobsens recent piece about me titled, Idealist Becomes the Demagogue. I have posted it on my blog at www.keadyreport.blogspot.com and I welcome comments there. Peace, James W. Keady Councilman, City of Asbury Park, NJ GET THE FACTS BEFORE YOU WRITE By Councilman James W. Keady In the November 16th issue of the TriCity News, TCN Publisher, Dan Jacobson authored a story titled, Idealist Becomes the Demagogue, commenting on an event that took place at the November 13th Asbury Park City Council Meeting. He called me a slew of nasty names and leveled some serious charges against me. What he failed to tell his readers is that he was not in attendance at the Council meeting in question. In fact, all of Mr. Jacobsons information from that evening came from secondhand sources. Unfortunately, I am not surprised by this because Mr. Jacobson rarely attends City Council meetings and he usually reports the majority of his news from secondhand sources. Ok, so Dan could not make it to the meeting. He heard about what happened and thought it worthy to write about. Given this, did he do what any fair-minded journalist would do and reach out to me to confirm his facts or to seek comment or clarification from me on what he was reporting? No. What Mr. Jacobson did was print false information and extrapolated his lengthy opinion from it, misinforming and misleading his readership in the process. When I read the article, I called Dan and asked him why he did not reach out to me to confirm that he had the facts correct given that he was not at the meeting. And he said: My deadline was too tight for me to call you. His deadline was too tight for him to call me. Let me give TCN readers a little background here. Dan Jacobson and I have a fairly good rapport with each other and we have an ongoing dialogue on a range of local and national political issues. He has my home phone number, my cell phone number, and my work phone number, all of which he has used in the past to call me about stories he is working on. Dans office is about 50 feet from mine same building, same floor - and he stops by our office regularly. And if I do not see Dan in the office, one of his favorite hang out spots is directly across the street from my home. Despite all this access and the fact that Dan was writing a story that was focused on me and my statements at a City Council meeting, he never said a word to me. Now, do I expect Dan Jacobson or anyone for that matter to agree with everything I say or do in my role as a Councilman in Asbury Park? Certainly not, but what I do hope for is simple fairness and accuracy in reporting. What would have been fair in this situation would have been for Dan to call me and ask me direct questions about what transpired at the November 13, 2006 City Council meeting. Here are my thoughts on how such a phone call might have gone. BEGIN INTERVIEW DJ: JIM, WHAT EXACTLY DID YOU PROPOSE AT THE COUNCIL MEETING REGARDING THE WEST SIDE COMMUNITY CENTER? During the public portion of the meeting, a significant number of residents and community leaders shared their frustrations about the violence in our streets and its impact on our young people. To combat this problem, they asked for the City Council to offer greater support to the West Side Community Center. In light of the issues they raised, I put a motion on the floor requesting that the governing body earmark $100,000 in funding from our Community Development and Affordable Housing Fund that could be made available for infrastructure upgrades and programming at the West Side Community Center. I also stated that in order for this money to be released, the West Side Community Center would submit proposals to the City Council on how the money would be used. The governing body would subsequently vote on which proposals they would like to support. Again, to be clear, I was not saying the money should go to the West Side Community Center that night. I requested a firm and measurable commitment of resources on the part of the City and a process by which those resources could be allocated. I was unable to garner a second for this motion. DJ: DID YOU TALK ABOUT THIS ISSUE WITH ANY OF YOUR FELLOW COUNCIL MEMBERS PRIOR TO THE MEETING? There has been the charge that I blindsided my colleagues with my request, that I had never discussed this issue before. On October 18, 2006, the day that Tylik Pugh was shot, I discussed earmarking $250,000 in funds from the Community Development and Affordable Housing Fund for community programs with both the City Manager and the Mayor. My proposal was similar to the one I made on Monday night, that the funds would be set aside and that community organizations like the West Side Community Center, the Boys and Girls Club, the Salvation

[AsburyPark] Proof or Retraction Mr. DeSeno
Nice try. I mocked Keady, and plan to do so again, for saying that the shooting wasn't criminal Mr. DeSeno, Your above statement is a lie. I NEVER said that the shooting was not criminal. Provide clear evidence of me making this statement VERBATIM or retract your comment. You are twisting words and insinuating meaning in a libelous fashion. For the benefit of others on this list, I have included the entire article in question below. The comments that Mr. DeSeno is referencing are as follows. Earlier in the week City Councilman James Keady said the shootings are not just a criminal problem but stem from social issues. (emphasis mine) The roots of the problem are not criminal, theyre social, he said. One of the underpinning issues is poverty as well as a sense of hopelessness among young African-American men in the city. Mr. DeSeno, again, you are lying and I expect either proof to the contrary or a retraction of your statement. Peace, James W. Keady THE COASTER The city of Asbury Park is reeling from several shootings in four days, one leaving a teenager on life support at press time. The shootings, two of which took place during the day, all occurred within a two-block radius near the Asbury Park Middle School and Bangs Avenue Elementary School. In the most recent shooting Tylek Pugh, 18, was shot in the head at the corner of Summerfield and Prospect Avenues at about 11 a.m. Wednesday. Board of Education President Robert DiSanto said all public schools in the district would be closed today (Oct. 19). We are very concerned about our students; that is our primary concern, he said. We need to work closer with the police and in that area. It has happened too many times in that area. Police Inspector Christopher Van Buren was at the scene Wednesday afternoon and said Pugh did not live in the neighborhood where he was shot, but was from the general area. Van Buren said he knew Pugh, but did not know if he had prior arrests. I know who he is, said Van Buren. The inspector said he could not confirm that the shooting was gang related, but said, Our guys are looking into it now. The shooting occurred within one block of the Middle School on Bangs Avenue. Several police cars and officers were in the area at the time of the schools dismissal, but Van Buren said students left the school without incident. There were no problems, he said. Two residents at the scene said they did not see anything and a man sitting on a porch outside the house on Prospect Avenue where the shooting took place, said he did not want to comment as he strummed his guitar with his dog nearby. Fire Official Garrett Giberson said the fire department responded to a call at 11:20 a.m. from the county 911 and Asbury Park Police Department that a man had been shot. They went to Summerfield and Prospect Avenue and found the victim laying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head. They administered CPR and transported the man to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where the trauma team was awaiting his arrival. Giberson said off-duty firemen were called into work to cover for those sent to the crime scene. Deputy Mayor Jim Bruno said he did not know whether the shooting was gang related. But gangs have their own justice system and they dont help the authorities when there are shootings, he said. The victims should help the police but they dont and thats a big problem. They get mad and then they get even. This is the time to act, not react. Whatever the deputy chief thinks he needs, the council will be there to support him. Wednesdays shooting was at least the third and possibly the fourth since Sunday. Asbury Park Police and the Monmouth County Prosecutors Office are investigating two shootings which occurred in the city on Sunday, as well as reports of another shooting which took place Tuesday. The first of the shootings occurred about 1 p.m. on Sunday on the 400 block of Comstock Street. Jahmere Crooms, 18, was shot once in the shoulder and taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. The victims last known address was in Asbury Park. Crooms gave city police very few details at the time of the incident, Det./Lt. David Kelso said. As of Wednesday, no arrests had been made in the case but the police are following leads, he said. The motive for the shooting is unknown as of yet. The second incident took place Sunday evening, as shots were fired from outside into the home at 612 Pine Street at 7:46 pm. One of the rounds hit the ceiling in the home and ricocheted into the head of a 19-year-old- man who had been standing in the living room, Kelso said. The young man was treated on-site for non-life threatening injuries. No arrests have been made yet, nor has a motive been determined. A report of shots being fired in the 1300 block of Langford Avenue at about 4 p.m. Tuesday is still being confirmed by police, Kelso said. The Monmouth County
[AsburyPark] CM Pallone and Asbury Park
In response to Mr. DeSenos comment about CM Pallone: Has anyone ever seen him in Asbury, other than Barney Frank visits and for Ranney School night? Yes. I stood with him during the dedication of The Center in October. He spent about an hour at The Center, toured the building, spoke with citizens, etc. On that day let me know that he is willing and wanting to discuss issues dealing with Asbury Park and told me to call him and make an appointment to do so. Also, on October 17th he and I were to meet with the principals of the Metro Homes project to discuss the union/local workforce issues. Metro cancelled the meeting at the last minute. I plan to request a new date from them soon. I also plan to arrange a meeting with CM Pallone in the coming weeks to discuss getting federal help for Asbury Parks recreation, police, workforce development and economic revitalization efforts. I certainly welcome additional suggestions for discussion from constituents. I hope this finds everyone enjoying this beautiful day. Peace, JWK Councilman James W. [AsburyPark] A few responses - CM Keady
In response to Allans statement: I understand your view at the bigger picture to bring upon social change. Councilman I am not going to give Asbury Park 20 years to clean up. I want to see results NOW. This is my frustration. If you can find money, use it for police. I am not asking for 20 years, but can I have at least the four years of my term to make an impact? It took 30 years for the City to get to the point that it has, I think you can agree that it is going to take at least a little time for it to turn the corner. You are concerned about money and spending it on police, how exactly would you propose spending the money if it were available? You might say, Hire more cops! Do you really believe that is going to give you results, NOW. Even if we wanted to hire 10 new cops right now, as Deputy Mayor Bruno correctly pointed out at the meeting on Wednesday, they would not be ready to hit the streets for almost a year. I want action NOW too Allan. That is why I am pushing my idea of greater immediate involvement from police in our surrounding municipalities and from the county and state forces. Again, our crime and violence problem is linked to regional issues and we should have regional cooperation for a regional solution. As for spending money on recreation, as an example, I can get a basketball league going two nights a week (which means two nights that these young guys wont be on the streets) for about $3-4K. This is a far cry from the tens of thousands it would take to hire one new police officer with benefits. I may also be able to get this paid for without city money, similar to my soccer program that I run in town where the program is completely self-sufficient through donations and fees. However, in light of recent events, I do think that taking a significant amount of money from the Community Development and Affordable Housing fund and investing it in recreation programs would pay both short and long-term dividends for the community. To this end, I have been in conversations with the Mayor and we JOINTLY stated at the meeting on Wednesday that we are going to be hammering out an expanded program and attaching a dollar amount to it in the near future. I am curious, have you called or emailed anyone in the Council majority and asked them for their plan of action on this matter? If so, can you please let me know what information you were able to get. On a completely different note I would like respond to Rev. Browns labeling me a Progressive Democrat. Progressive, yes, I will even proudly wear the mantle of liberal, (i.e. open minded and willing to accept and promote change). I am not however, a Democrat. I am unaffiliated at this time and the last political party I belonged to was the Republican Party. Peace, JWK Councilman James W. [AsburyPark] One more response - CM Keady
Allan wrote in response to Dan: In all due respect, the other counsil memnbers did not suggest finding money for recreation. (Original spelling his) The Mayor and I BOTH recommended this the other night at the Council meeting. What the actual dollar amount would be, we are still discussing. I pointed this out in my last email, but I wanted to be very clear on this point. Peace, JWK Councilman James W. [AsburyPark] Addressing Allan's Concerns about Recreation and Tourism - CM Keady
Allan, Please allow me to address the concerns that you raised in this forum in the past two days regarding statements I have made both here and to the press. I will address the matter of public safety and the shootings that have occurred first as this is far more pressing than tourism. My belief is that the ongoing problem of violence and crime in our City needs to be attacked on two levels criminal and social. With regards to the criminal issue, you wrote: Keady plans to talk with Mayor Kevin Sanders today, prior to tonight's council meeting, about taking funds out of the community development funds, some of which are earmarked for affordable housing, to tackle the problem through recreation. What's the point of building homes if people are afraid to move in? he says. WRONG Use the money and hire police. Make this town so tough that if you go 31 MPH in a 25 zone you are given a ticket and there are so many police in the town that if you do the same thing 2 blocks further, you are given another ticket. You are not going to fix the problem by playing ball. Make it so tough that a person has to decide either clean up or get out. I am assuming that you were not at last nights City Council meeting when I proposed the following to the Deputy Chief and the City Manager. Given that much of the crime in Asbury Park stems from the drug trade and that Asbury Park is the REGIONS drug hub, I want a regional solution. I asked that we request that the Prosecutors office make it mandatory for surrounding municipalities to supplement our Police Department so that we can flood the streets with officers and lock down the Southwest Corner of town where much of the violent crime is occurring. I also shared a concern with the Deputy Chief that residents in the affected neighborhood had shared with me earlier in the day. They said that if you go to other towns (I used Wall Township as an example) that you wouldnt even drive over the 25 MPH speed limit, let alone do the things that kids in our town are doing. I conveyed that residents feel that there seems to be a much tougher attitude on the part of the police in those towns and that there is a healthy fear of breaking the law and a respect for the police. I asked if the Deputy Chief could consider this and begin developing ways to create such an atmosphere in our department. It is important to note that I was severely criticized for this particular statement by one resident who claimed that what I said was a slap in the face to the Police Department. It seems that I could have used you there to support what appears to be our shared position on this matter. I also agreed with the Mayors suggestion that we CONSIDER the placement of cameras in these particular areas. I do have serious concerns about the violations of civil liberties that this might bring about and I will weigh this option with great discernment. However, these are clearly serious times and they MAY call for such measures. After the Council meeting, I spoke with members of the Monmouth County Tactical Narcotics Team and the State Police about the current situation in Asbury Park. I shared with them my desire to have our Police Department supplemented with at least 20 more officers and that I wanted to have a situation where one could not walk more than a few blocks in Asbury Park without seeing a police officer on foot. This afternoon, in the hour I had between the Capital Budget meeting and the Affordable Housing Subcommittee meeting, I walked over to Bangs and Prospect Avenues to speak with residents and business owners. I spoke with the owners of Sheffields Market and let them know that I was sorry that this happened so close to their store and that if they needed anything from me, they knew where to call me. I also visited the barber shop across the street to speak with Clayton, the owner of the shop. I regularly visit him to find out what is going on in the neighborhood and how I can help. One of the first things that I noticed during my walk up Bangs Avenue was that there was not one Asbury Park police officer walking that street or standing on the corner of Bangs and Prospect. When I went into the barber shop and spoke with Clayton and his customers, I asked them if there had been any cops on foot on that corner today. They said that there were not. So, I immediately called the City Manager and shared this information. Within minutes, a number of police cars came past the site, which I was please with, but no officers got out of those cars and walked the area. I monitored the situation for about 45 minutes and when I returned to City Hall, I immediately raised this issue with the City Manager and told him that I want our officers out of their cars on the street on that corner. He assured me that he would address it. I hope this

[AsburyPark] Point of Clarity - SCHOOL TAXES
Oak, The following comment is not correct. 2. The Council for failing to raise School Tax $. In Asbury Park, the City Council does not raise school taxes. We are only the collecting agent. [AsburyPark] A Point of Clarity - Missed Vote/Conference Call
I would like to clarify the following point. The city manager did not pick-up the phone when Keady called from San Francisco, to go on the record, to vote no on the two votes. Other times, other council members in the past, used the phone to vote at the meetings. This was not Mr. Reidys fault. I take full responsibility for this. There was a clear miscommunication on setting up the conference call, however, given that the responsibility to participate was mine, I take full blame and I offer my apology to my constituents. [AsburyPark] DeSeno is a Disappointment
I would like to quickly respond to Mr. DeSenos comments that he posted yesterday. I say quickly, because I have an affordable housing subcommittee meeting that I am now 1 minute late for. I will be sure to post a more detailed explanation of the actions I am taking regarding the C-8 property in the coming days. Tom, I am really shocked about the things you posted in your initial email. I am especially shocked in light of the conversation I had with you regarding this matter at Be Green about a week ago. You were the one who told me that if there was discussion about the C-8 paragraph in question during the public meetings at the Berkeley Carteret, then we would have a problem. You also went on to tell me, Jim, get the tapes of those meetings, along with other informal legal advice. I have started to do everything you advised me to do. I know you said that you had to be careful about what you said publicly because of your contract with the City and that you would be hurt and extremely disappointed if something improper had occurred because of your lifelong friendships with Jim Bruno and Kevin Sanders. I also ask that if you publish an editorial on this issue in this weeks TriCity News, that you: 1. Disclose the fact that you have a contract with the city. Your readers deserve to know this. 2. You listen to the tape of the last city council meeting to report on EXACTLY what was said by me, Bruno and Johnson on this issue. I know you would never trust Nancy Shields at the Press to get things 100% right. That is at least one point that you, I and your publisher can agree on. 3. That you, unlike Nancy Shields, actually inform the public about the facts in question, most specifically, print the paragraph in question and the implications of said paragraph if it is, as I believe, a part of the current redevelopment plan. As I mentioned above, I will provide more later as I believe this issue is of paramount importance. Peace, JWK Councilmember James W. [AsburyPark] Councilmember Keady's November Update
FROM THE DESK OF COUNCILMEMBER JAMES W. KEADY NOVEMBER UPDATE 2005 Dear Constituents: I hope that each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Here is my November Update, a progress report on the areas in which I am continuing to focus my energies. I apologize that you are receiving the November update on December 1st. I was lecturing in Philadelphia and Washington, DC the past few days and my attempts to email this to you from the road were unsuccessful on a number of occasions. PUBLIC SAFETY Our current Police Director Lou Jordan has effectively finished his tenure in Asbury Park by using his remaining sick and vacation days through the month of December. Our City Manager is now engaged in an aggressive search for a new Police Director. During the recent League of Municipalities conference I was lucky enough to speak with a number of law enforcement officials from around the state and all of them have offered their help to us to ensure that Asbury Park gets the most competent Police Director available. This past week our City Manager made two very important promotions in our Police Department. We now have Mark Kinmon as our Deputy Police Director and Christopher Van Buren as our Police Inspector. Following these promotions I spoke with officers from our department, from Neptune, from the Prosecutors Office, and from the TNT Force. Every one of them agreed that the promotion of these two officers was one of the best developments for our Police Department in years. I wholeheartedly agree with them. During our November 14th City Council Meeting, I was very clear with former Deputy Chief Reed that I felt our Police Department failed our citizens, particularly our children, following the recent murder of Jerry Jules on DeWitt Avenue. Certainly they should have increased their presence on DeWitt in the days after the murder to give the people in the neighborhood an increased sense of safety. The Monday after the murder, when school was letting out, I was on DeWitt Avenue and there was not a police officer in sight. I let Deputy Chief Reed know, in no uncertain terms, that this was unacceptable. I also was critical of our lack of progress on curtailing the drug trade at the corner of Bangs and Prospect. In recent days I have been pleased by what appears to be an increased police presence on that corner and I will continue to track progress here. RECREATION On November 4th I had a very productive meeting with Stacey LaStella from the Red Bank YMCA and Robert Taylor from the Boys and Girls Club. Our conversation was focused on establishing a unique partnership between these two organizations to provide a comprehensive swim program for children, adults and seniors at the Boys and Girls Club, as well as creating dynamic daytime programming (yoga, aerobics, etc.) for young mothers and seniors. We are in the midst of preparing formal proposals for these programs and, if all goes well, we envision executing them in 4 to 5 months. I have made tentative arrangements for a meeting between Stacey from the YMCA and Susan Maynard from the West Side Community Center to see what possibilities there are for a programming partnership. Once this meeting takes place, I will update you. I submitted a proposal to our City Manager and Director of Social Services to resurrect the Senior Ceramics Program. It seems that we have just a few small hurdles to get over, but I am hopeful that this program will be active in the very near future. The City Recreation Department has recently begun an after-school program at the Asbury Park Middle School. For more information, please contact Cheryl Pearsal at 732-502-5747. EMPLOYMENT In November I attended two meetings for the Asbury Works Advisory Board. The first was our full board meeting at which we discussed a very impressive proposal by our Summer Jobs Subcommittee. I am looking forward to this proposal getting to its final form and then being executed. The second was with the At Risk Youth Subcommittee of which I am a member. During this meeting we had a very enlightening discussion on the responsibilities of ours and the other subcommittees and we will be returning to the full committee with what we believe will be a more effective means of moving forward. Once we report to the full committee on our findings, I am looking forward to sharing with you the details of what we propose. I recently requested a report from Tamara Richardson on the progress she has been making with the Asbury Works program and I was very pleased with the information she shared with me. The following are highlights from Asbury Works actions prior to March 15, 2005: Registered almost 700 people - approximately 50 were non residents and they were

But, my family's place does not have the POTENTIAL to be a massive tourist draw for Waretown, NJ. The Stone Pony, with its name, potential branding power, historic prevalence in Springsteen mythology (perceived or earned, it doesn't matter, it exists), make it a significant ASSET and one that should be capitalized on, rather than discarded glibly as we redevelop our city. We have two clear and exciting assets in Asbury Park that are not being capitalized on in the least - our music history and our reputation as a beachfront tourist destination. [AsburyPark] Deadlines - Addressing Allan's question
Hello all, I wanted to quickly address the question raised by Allan last week: What is Keady doing about the past deadlines? When he was citizen Keady, he claimed he was going to get to the bottom of this. It is one thing to say these words or talk about how the redevelopment should be, but actions would be nice. Maybe action has been taken, just nobody tells us. I have finally received (last week) the complete set of documents for the Waterfront Redevelopment Agreement. I will now go through these documents and make determinations as to what needs to be addressed in terms of missed deadlines. To give you an idea of the type of accountability I have begun and will continue to implement, I have attached a recent memo that I sent to our City Manager. It should give you a sense of the questions I am asking and the approach I will be using to get answers to these questions. In the past month, I have sent almost 20 memos such as this on a range of issues that I wanted addressed. The response from our City Manager and staff to date has been very good and I am encouraged to continue along these lines. If you have a specific issue you would like me to address, please feel free to email it to me at this address and I will be sure to get back to you. Allan, I would also like to personally invite you to City Council meetings so that you can hear/see what is going on first hand. There is a special meeting tonight at 5:30pm on the budget and another set of regularly scheduled public meetings next Wednesday starting at 6pm. I hope this finds you well and I hope to see you soon. RE: [AsburyPark] T-Dube follow the Posts
Jim turned it to an invite to talk to 3 people he believes he heard make an off color remark during his campaign. Hardly a walk about AP, T-Dube. Tom, Here you go again, twisting words to suit your own arguments. I did not believe I heard an off-color remark. I had three people flat out say to me that Asbury Park would be a better place if we just got all the blacks out of town. I didn't believe I heard it, I did. Now, I do not think that in any of my posts that I said that Asbury Park is a racist town. However, I did and would continue to state that racism exists is Asbury Park. This is a clear distinction and an important one. First, we were referring to Dan S and me, not Dan J and me. Second - I have money invested in AP in real estate (not to mention enormous amounts of time energy volunteering for three different community boards). How about you? Your money where your mouth is? If things are so GREAT in Dan's Little City By The Sea he ought to come out of his bunker and prove it. Alas, similar to turning down Keady's invite to walk the streets, Dan and Tom will continue to write their fiction and ne'er step foot on those mean streets. First, Keady can walk around AP for the rest of his life and not catch up to me being on Asbury's streets. Second, the only way you can conclude that I turned Jim down is by not following the posts. Jim turned it down. The topic was whether AP is a racist town. My answer was no, Jim's was yes. Jim first invited me to walk around AP find the racism. Knowing that would be futile, I compared it to walking to the Shore to find mermaids (or intelligent liberals). A light bulb went off in Jim's head that walking around AP would not turn up racism (because I'm right, it isn't a racist place) Jim turned it to an invite to talk to 3 people he believes he heard make an off color remark during his campaign. Hardly a walk about AP, T-Dube. Third, although you won't believe me, I feel a certain need to protect our young councilman from himself. Just like I wouldn't let him list names on this board of his constituents that he believes can't make an informed, intelligent decision, I also won't take part in Jim publicly announcing that he categorizes his constituents as a bunch of racists. Each would be an act of political suicide (assuming the AP Press ever pays attention here) and I won't take part in Jim doing that to himself (or us for that matter - I'm no racist - any of you?). I have a question. In the interview with Vin Scelsa and Daniel Wolff, they talk about the Asbury riots. Wolff refers to riots as a rebellion, interestingly. He also says that the Asbury riots were 2 years after the riots that rocked American cities. I recall that the Asbury riots were going on at the same time as rioting in Newark, Watts, Detroit, Trenton and elsewhere. Who is correct. While AP vandalism was several years removed from the other cities riots, you aren't wrong to put them in the same time frame as I don't believe the general mood of the country had changed. That being said it is a tricky question, because the AP vandalism didn't have it's genesis in the mood of the country like the other places. Wolff also relates a Springsteen story that has Bruce climbing a water tower and seeing the riots on Springwood and people on the beach. I hope Gary Wein asks Wolff in his interview if he knows which tower that was. But oh what a treat it would be to see a Kohrs Ice Cream on the boardwalk again in Asbury, there is one in Point Pleasant, but that's hardly a boardwalk. It's more like a bunch of boards. I must respectfully disagree. Pt. Pleasant boardwalk rocks. Yahoo! Groups Links Yahoo! RE: [AsburyPark] Re: Councilman Keady's Notes - July 6, 2005
I always wondered why there is such a space between city government and the Board of Ed. This is certainly a concern of mine as well. Prior to my running for council, I had a wonderful two-hour conversation with BOE President, Rob DiSanto about how the City Government and the School Board could work more collaboratively together. We knocked around a number of ideas that I hope we can pursue in the coming months. I also very recently had lunch with our new Athletic Director and I am very excited about the ideas we shared for upgrading our athletic facilities and increasing youth involvement in school and city run recreation programs. In the coming weeks I plan to lay out my goals for the next four years and clearly articulate what exactly I am going to work towards. Certainly items such as the ones mentioned above will be high on the list. RE: [AsburyPark] RE: Bikes on the Boardwalk
Marc, I have raised the topic of a bike lane on the boardwalk with both our City Manager and the Director of Public Works. I hope to have some clarity on this soon after my taking office on July 1st. Last night, my wife and I went for a bike ride on the boardwalk and one of Fishman's workers yelled at us for riding our bikes through the casino. Now we would be more than happy to ride on the street, but it's under construction. This guy had no clue. Does anyone know what the rules are? Why would you stop the bikers who spend money on the boardwalk? Shops will close down and we will then be back to square one. Who will spend money at the shops? The crack heads at Howard Johnson? I bike lane would be great, but the current construction prevents this on the street. Any thoughts or feedback? Marc Elia 4th Ave Yahoo! Groups Links Yahoo!
