geez, that's just one website with info on asbury. Actaully, for the key words Asbury Park, Goog: asburypark.net, cityofasburypark.com, Gayasburypark, then wikipedia, asburyboardwalk.com ):, asburychamber.com and conventionhall.net then asburymusic.com. Yhoo:City is first, then app.com, asburypark.net, chamber, boe,...wiki is 6th. Live.com (microsfot's latest attempt at search):asburypark.net, then city add in keywods like boardwalk, music, or real estate and the mix changes. Hint: Whomever is in charge of PR should put out clear communication on events both on the bordwalk and downtown. The historical site seems to be working now as are the rest of the individually operated sites. cityofasburypark.com jsut needs to be maintained. It weighted more in search results. [AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Images at Wikipedia
My complaint isn't about that stuff. I didn't post all of that. I'm actually happy about what happened to my post, because it will give me a chance to highlight why Wiki is not a source. I added to the Asbury Park Wiki, under Noteable Residents Edna Woolman Chase, the editor of Vogue who was born in AP. When you add someone to the list, you are supposed to link to a source to prove your assertion. I linked to the Woolman family's website, to the page they keep about Edna, which contains a quote from her wherein she talks of being born in Asbury Park. Straight from the horse's mouth. It wasn't long before someone came along and changed my link. The link was changed from the family's website to a Wiki about Edna Woolman Chase. So I inquired of the guy why he made the change. Here is what he told me: It is Wiki policy that you should always first link to another Wiki if it exists, as opposed to an external link. Now, the Wiki link about Edna - doesn't even say she is from Asbury Park. Since the purpose of the link is to prove she is from Asbury Park, isn't mine better? Ready to complete the circle? At the bottom of the Wiki about Edna is the very link I used from her family's website. This highlights what is wrong with Wiki - they expect that in the end the source of proof for one Wiki will be - another Wiki, not the actual source material. They want to interpose Wiki between the reader and the source, as if Wiki is itself a source. it isn't. If I'm going to give Wiki any due at all, maybe it will be a good source agregator. But a source itself? It can't be, no matter how hard they try. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, dfsavgny [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright justifiedright@ wrote: Thanks, but my entry was immediately altered by a Wiki-Nazi, just like I said would happen. I agree that many, many people use Wiki. So you are absolutely right - we should endeavor to make it better. This also highlight why Wiki isn't a reliable source. As you say, the Asbury Park installment, taken as a whole, seems misleading. THe same is true for much of Wiki. It's OK for facts beyond dispute (birth and death dates, etc, but awful for anything subject to interpretation). Just wait until you see the fight you're in for when you try to change it. People who think just anyone can change it are wrong. There are a number of Wiki people out their, with no expertise on anything, that have veto power on what you put up there. They monitor every chnage. IF they don't like it, they change it back. I hope you can get it done. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In a message dated 7/30/2007 8:21:23 A.M. This would be a perfect job for the Asbury Park Historic Society, but, are they actually still a functioning group? The reason I ask is that I tried contacting them several times around the time that the Library Square Park fountain was vandalized, and I heard nothing from them. This surprised me, because they renovated the fountain and had a sprinkler system installed, but after both of those were damaged I have yet to see or hear anything from the society about this. It's like they went into the park and did some good work, then they pretty much forgot about the place. I'm sure it hurt them to find their efforts destroyed, but that doesn't mean that you just give up and move on. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Allan Peterson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The city can't ever maintain their own website. Anyone can update Wiki, but making it stick is the problem. People there have seniority depending upon how much they use the site. At some point they get granted a certain status. Accordingly, the people who use it most are the ones who have time - high school and college kids. If one of these guys with seniority doesn't like your post, not only can he take it down, he can suspend your posting privileges. Understand I'm not talking about someone actually connected with the ownership of Wiki - I'm talking about another usuer. So if some scientist wants to post something about stem cell research, and a High Schooler with seniority disagrees, the High Schooler gets to decide if it stays. Popular site? Absolutely - Mario's right we should change the Asbury Park entry. Reliable site? Not a chance (proof is that we are talking about having to change the entry in the fisrt place). --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: anyone can update the Wikipedia entries. Dan wrote: and was recently cited by a NYS Supreme Court judge in a decision. Yes it was. Many of the criticisms mentioned here deal with issues that have been ironed out. Last week's NYT reported that Wiki media is now giving Google a run for its money. IP addresses of people who hack or screw up with biased or incorrect information or refuse to be civil about disagreements on the discussion pages are blocked from editing. Jimbo Wales ( _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jimbo_Wales_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jimbo_Wales) ) founded Wiki and did a 45 minute interview at C-Span this weekend. He explains away most of the issues raised at the above link or at the interview here: Lookfor RECENT PROGRAMS __ (http://www.c-span.org/videoarchives.asp?CatCodePairs=Series,APSArchiveDays=100) _American Perspectives: Jimbo Wales, Dan Rather, Tammy Bruce_ (javascript:playClip(clip31856)) (07/28/2007)here: _Click here: C-SPAN: AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES_ (http://www.c-span.org/homepage.asp?Cat=SeriesCode=APSShowVidNum=10Rot_Cat_CD=APSRot_HT=206Rot_WD=ShowVid Days=100ShowVidDesc=ArchiveDays=100) The success of the site is partly attributed to the fact that info without citations are labeled as so, and therefore, suspect. Of course the site would have to be monitored, just as this board is for misinformation. Considering the high traffic the site receives now, it could be a very valuable PR tool for the city. High Schools and colleges are now clamping down on students using Wiki for research, just as in the old days we were not permitted to use encyclopedias as sources. If we all collaborated and reached consensus, the entry would remain intact. They now have all sorts of safeguards in place. Can't see why the city or developers wouldn't want to look into it -- all free PR. As it stands now, with some of those pictures , can't see why anyone would follow up if he or she were thinking of buying here. The legend has it that the radio was cut after a knockdown. Don't know which one. Could have been any of them, and the recollection you cite doesn't answer the question. That's called reliable info in Wiki world, not in the real world. Sounds like an insult to me. It was. Also, if I recall correctly, my column said something to the effect of legend has it about the radio broadcast being cut. Haven't you pretty much proved that I was telling the truth about that? You've found numerous sources, Wiki itself, citing the same thing. Lastly on this, which one of us is hijakcing the thread? You are bringing up this stuff from last year, not me. Maureen is right! How on earth can anyone be trusted to get the story right when any version of the story is only as accurate, or even as serious, as the last anonymous person to log on and rewrite it? Anne Frank was 13 when she started writing her diary. Want to question her letters? Both the cited letter I provided and the legend are included in the wiki entry on Max. It was amended based on new info. Unlike any of your mistakes: (Using the legend as analogous proof of a godless school board and judiciary which you ditto from the wingnut blogs. You've inadvertently transposed their misspellings which gave your sources away on more than one occasion.) Your responses today come before you could possibly have read any of the technology, business, magazine articles, or the video support I provided. They approximate primary sources far more than anything you've posted on this thread. Next time you fail to give sources for quotes in your columns, why not head the column with This article lacks citations as Wiki does? As far as your smears, they're not permitted at Wiki where disputed info, unlike your rants, is noted. Your responses are smarmy insults, mere assertions, and circular reasoning, par for the course. I am so glad to see the huge response! Taking my niece, down to the boards, tomorrow or Wednesday; whichever day she decides to come down! In any event, just who is supposed to maintain the City's website? Is it a paid position? I used to get an email once a week, but haven't received any in a while, until the July 4th weekend, then nothing again! I really hated the picture of the old Howard Johnsons, with the peeling paint, inside the eaves. I was crushed, because like the Asbury Park De-Pressed, we're always given a less than stellar image! Thanks to all who have contributed. Now if $850K can be spent on a water park, which I think was over priced, why can't the City sink $150K, to start installing some surveillance cameras? I was impressed with the scrutiny my suggestion received, but you implied that Wiki is full of mistakes by kids; i.e., there is no accountability at that site. Where was the accountability when you misplaced a statement, by about 14 years, then put quotation marks around a paraphrase to charge cut and run blah, blah, blah. Mario I'm not sure why we ended up arguing over this. I said in the beginning of the thread that I thought you were right. I believe the Wiki AP section needs to be updated. Again, I said you were right about that. Not sure what more I can do than say you are right about something. I added also that I don't like Wiki as a reliable source. That certainly isn't a knock against you personally. I just don't trust the website. I understand that you do trust it more than I do. I don't know why that disagreement requires you and I to go back and forth at eachother like we did. For some reason, we fell into it. I hope we can end this where we agree - updating the AP Wiki page is necessary, and appears to be underway. Yahoo!
