geez, that's just one website with info on asbury.

Actaully, for the key words Asbury Park,

Goog: asburypark.net, cityofasburypark.com, Gayasburypark, then
wikipedia, asburyboardwalk.com ):, asburychamber.com and
conventionhall.net then asburymusic.com.

Yhoo:City is first, then app.com, asburypark.net, chamber, boe,...wiki
is 6th.

Live.com (microsfot's latest attempt at search):asburypark.net, then
city

add in keywods like boardwalk, music, or real estate and the mix changes.

Hint: Whomever is in charge of PR should put out clear communication
on events both on the bordwalk and downtown. The historical site seems
to be working now as are the rest of the individually operated sites.

cityofasburypark.com jsut needs to be maintained. It weighted more in
search results.

The Internet is a powerful, cheap and TRUSTED marketing tool.

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Images at Wikipedia

2007-07-31 Thread justifiedright
My complaint isn't about that stuff. I didn't post all of that.

I'm actually happy about what happened to my post, because it will
give me a chance to highlight why Wiki is not a source.

I added to the Asbury Park Wiki, under Noteable Residents Edna
Woolman Chase, the editor of Vogue who was born in AP.

When you add someone to the list, you are supposed to link to a
source to prove your assertion.

I linked to the Woolman family's website, to the page they keep
about Edna, which contains a quote from her wherein she talks of
being born in Asbury Park. Straight from the horse's mouth.

It wasn't long before someone came along and changed my link. The
link was changed from the family's website to a Wiki about Edna
Woolman Chase.

So I inquired of the guy why he made the change. Here is what he
told me:

It is Wiki policy that you should always first link to another Wiki
if it exists, as opposed to an external link.

Now, the Wiki link about Edna - doesn't even say she is from Asbury
Park. Since the purpose of the link is to prove she is from Asbury
Park, isn't mine better?

Ready to complete the circle? At the bottom of the Wiki about Edna
is the very link I used from her family's website.

This highlights what is wrong with Wiki - they expect that in the
end the source of proof for one Wiki will be - another Wiki, not
the actual source material. They want to interpose Wiki between the
reader and the source, as if Wiki is itself a source. it isn't.

If I'm going to give Wiki any due at all, maybe it will be a
good source agregator. But a source itself? It can't be, no
matter how hard they try.

It's an almost decent assessment, but the photos, definitely should be
replaced! No doubt! I think the Council, should place their own
comments, don't you? The piece doesn't do Asbury enough justice,
IMHO! I saw a jewel, no, the Pearl, I envision, when I talk about AP!
I was impressed to no end, with all of the activity and beauty, I
surveyed. I am never one, to talk to strangers, and I found myself,
talking to anyone, who would listen! People were smiling, enjoying
the ocean, the boards; everything. I was happy as all get out and
sorry, I hadn't taken advantage of the beautiful place, we call home,
before! Yeah, yeah, I know, we aren't THERE, yet, but you have to
crawl, before you walk, as my dad, always said! There are REAL
possibilities here! Now, if we could just get those cameras! Me, who
is a civil libertarian, stating this! I must be getting old!

 1. Just some observations I've made recently. Reuters reports that
Wikipedia is now the top online news and information destination,
according to Nielsen//NetRatings. Online encyclopedia Wikipedia has
added about 20 million unique monthly visitors in the past year. In May,
Wikipedia had 46.8 million unique visitors, up 72 percent from June
2006, NetRatings said. Wikipedia also has finished on top of the news
and information category every month this year -- ranking ahead of
Landmark Communications' Weather Channel site by an increasing margin --
topping out with a disparity of about 10 million visitors in May.

 2. As I understand it, the rank of results at Google is based on what
sites users are visiting. Right now, a search for Asbury Park
will show Wikipedia ranked as number 3 or 4 out of approximately
 2,000,000 hits.

 3. Here is the main entry about our city: Click here: Asbury Park, New

 Negativity

Is it just me or do the photos in this suggest a lot of negativity?
Crumbling, dilapidated, vacant these are all used in the captions
of the photos and suggest the demise of the town. However, the article
doesn't talk about a decline and, instead, focuses on redevelopment.
What are the views on this? The photos seem to suggest one point of view
(that Asbury Park's a piece of crap [pardon the French]) and the article
suggests another (Asbury Park: Getting' better every day). Thoughts? 12
 January 2007 (UTC)

I totally agree-- the same thoughts passed through my head as I read it.
Perhaps some new photos are in order? 17:56, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

 have you ever been there?

talk it up all you want, this city is positively terrifying.

I'm hoping (suggesting) that the powers that be* have some
content and images that more accurately reflect our progress at this
time. Various news sources, marketing, and real estate interests have
recently published many terrific images (E.g., Paramount Theater
renovations, the new Hobo's, parades, et al.) They show us in a more
positive light than what you'll see there now: the old
 Beirut-by-the-Sea stuff.

It is not very difficult to edit a Wikipedia article or comment on the
talk or discussion pages. Much easier, less time and effort than it took
to carry out this year's a fantastic Road Trip event.

Hoping that the professionals* with expertise in this area might add
this to their To Do Lists.

I agree that many, many people use Wiki. So you are absolutely
right - we should endeavor to make it better.

This also highlight why Wiki isn't a reliable source. As you say,
the Asbury Park installment, taken as a whole, seems misleading. THe
same is true for much of Wiki. It's OK for facts beyond dispute
(birth and death dates, etc, but awful for anything subject to
interpretation).

Just wait until you see the fight you're in for when you try to
change it. People who think just anyone can change it are wrong.

There are a number of Wiki people out their, with no expertise on
anything, that have veto power on what you put up there. They
monitor every chnage. IF they don't like it, they change it back.

I hope you can get it done.

The city can't ever maintain their own website. Visitors will only find dead

much more. Poor source of information for people interested in Asbury Park.

2007-07-30 Thread Hinge
This would be a perfect job for the Asbury Park Historic Society, but, are they
actually still
a functioning group? The reason I ask is that I tried contacting them several
times around
the time that the Library Square Park fountain was vandalized, and I heard
nothing from
them. This surprised me, because they renovated the fountain and had a
sprinkler system
installed, but after both of those were damaged I have yet to see or hear
anything from the
society about this. It's like they went into the park and did some good work,
then they
pretty much forgot about the place. I'm sure it hurt them to find their efforts
destroyed,
but that doesn't mean that you just give up and move on.

Don't sweat Werner's insult, Alan. The fact that you will give the
City compliments where deserved and criticism where deserved (like

your opinions can be relied upon.

Clearly you have no axe to grind and are only interested in truth.

I was laughing at my own wit and sarcasm.
So that folks would not think my comment was a serious critique.

Although, others have used the same logic - 'oh, stop complaining' -
for other legitimate concerns, and no one characterizes it as an
insult.

Double standards here perhaps?

site. At some point they get granted a certain status.

Accordingly, the people who use it most are the ones who have time -
high school and college kids.

If one of these guys with seniority doesn't like your post, not only
can he take it down, he can suspend your posting privileges.

Understand I'm not talking about someone actually connected with the
ownership of Wiki - I'm talking about another usuer.

So if some scientist wants to post something about stem cell
research, and a High Schooler with seniority disagrees, the High
Schooler gets to decide if it stays.

Popular site? Absolutely - Mario's right we should change the
Asbury Park entry.

Reliable site? Not a chance (proof is that we are talking about
having to change the entry in the fisrt place).

Yes it was. Many of the criticisms mentioned here deal with issues that
have been ironed out. Last week's NYT reported that Wiki media is now giving
Google a run for its money. IP addresses of people who hack or screw up with
biased or incorrect information or refuse to be civil about disagreements on
the discussion pages are blocked from editing.

Jimbo Wales ( _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jimbo_Wales_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jimbo_Wales) ) founded Wiki and did a 45
minute
interview at C-Span this weekend. He explains away most of the issues raised
at the
above link or at the interview here:

The success of the site is partly attributed to the fact that info without
citations are labeled as so, and therefore, suspect. Of course the site would
have to be monitored, just as this board is for misinformation. Considering
the high traffic the site receives now, it could be a very valuable PR tool
for the city. High Schools and colleges are now clamping down on students
using Wiki for research, just as in the old days we were not permitted to
use
encyclopedias as sources.

If we all collaborated and reached consensus, the entry would remain intact.
They now have all sorts of safeguards in place.

Can't see why the city or developers wouldn't want to look into it -- all
free PR. As it stands now, with some of those pictures , can't see why anyone
would follow up if he or she were thinking of buying here.

BTW: Way back when, when I objected to a legend about the fighter Max in
Hitler's Germany, I submitted the additional info from the NYT letter to the
editor. My addition was thoroughly scrutinized and then made permanent by
those who watch over that entry.

Hope this thread doesn't get hijacked by irrelevant info -- since we all
care about this city so much.

At what point did this person recollect the announcer saying Get up

Excerpt from NYT magazine a few weeks ago:

The tricky thing is, the process by which Wikipedia usually, eventually gets
things right — the notion that mistakes in a given entry, whether
intentional or unintentional, will ultimately be caught and repaired as a
function of
the project’s massive, egalitarian oversight — doesn’t seem as if it would
work when people are looking for information about events unfolding in real
time. How on earth can anyone be trusted to get the story right when any
version
of the story is only as accurate, or even as serious, as the last anonymous
person to log on and rewrite it?
Nothing is easier than taking shots at Wikipedia, and its many mistakes (most
often instances of deliberate vandalism) are schadenfreude’s most renewable
resource. But given the chaotic way in which it works, the truly remarkable
thing about Wikipedia as a news site is that it works as well as it does.

Wikipedia
 has
added about 20 million unique monthly visitors in the past
year.
 In May,
Wikipedia had 46.8 million unique visitors, up 72 percent from
 June
2006, NetRatings said. Wikipedia also has finished on top of
the
 news

 of
Landmark Communications' Weather Channel site by an increasing
 margin --
topping out with a disparity of about 10 million visitors in
May.

   2. As I understand it, the rank of results at Google is based
on
 what
sites users are visiting. Right now, a search for Asbury Park
will show Wikipedia ranked as number 3 or 4 out of approximately
   2,000,000 hits.

Talk: Asbury Park, New Jersey, From Wikipedia, the free

   Negativity

Is it just me or do the photos in this suggest a lot of
 negativity?
Crumbling, dilapidated, vacant these are all used in the
 captions
of the photos and suggest the demise of the town. However, the
 article
doesn't talk about a decline and, instead, focuses on
 redevelopment.
What are the views on this? The photos seem to suggest one
point
 of view
(that Asbury Park's a piece of crap [pardon the French]) and
the
 article
suggests another (Asbury Park: Getting' better every day).

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Images at Wikipedia

2007-07-30 Thread 2fine4u
I am so glad to see the huge response! Taking my niece, down to the
boards, tomorrow or Wednesday; whichever day she decides to come down!
In any event, just who is supposed to maintain the City's website?
Is it a paid position? I used to get an email once a week, but
haven't received any in a while, until the July 4th weekend, then
nothing again! I really hated the picture of the old Howard Johnsons,
with the peeling paint, inside the eaves. I was crushed, because like
the Asbury Park De-Pressed, we're always given a less than stellar
image! Thanks to all who have contributed. Now if $850K can be spent
on a water park, which I think was over priced, why can't the City
sink $150K, to start installing some surveillance cameras? Are we
asking for too much? I am against Big Brother, but in common areas?
C'mon!

Maybe we should contact her to fix the Wiki. It is her job anyway,
which will perhaps also get her past the Wiki editors when she makes
 the changes.

I didn't know this was going to be an issue. When I said Her

even thinking of that.

All I meant was she takes pictures, and she is probably in
possession of them, regardless of ownership.

My main point was that since she has a title with the City, they
might accept her changes.

You see, when she makes the changes, it is likely that her changes
will be immediately deleted.

Then she will be contacted by the 10th grader in charge, demanding
to know her credibility on the issue.

The 10th grader will consult with his 9th grade assistant, and
together they will decide if Laura's version of Asbury Park is
acceptable to their view of reality.

They will accept the assignment in study hall, and hopefully make a
decision on behalf of Wiki before their Moms make them go to bed.

Certain persons on this Group will accept their decision as truth no
matter what it is.

I suppose you'll dismiss Ken Burn's new documentary War due on TV this
fall. PBS is a actively recruiting WWII veterans to videotape their memories
from over 50 years ago. Also, there was never a follow up letter i the Times
challenging the holocaust survivor's assertion. A red herring.

Yes, I know this was about the Asbury Wike site. So why did you bring
up our argument from last year about Max?
The argument wasn't about Max; your column was yet another culture war piece
in which you used paper thin evidence to reiterate the silly See what
liberals do! See, See!

I referred to Max because it was my experience in using my account to edit
that article. I was impressed with the scrutiny my suggestion received, but
you implied that Wiki is full of mistakes by kids; i.e., there is no
accountability at that site. Where was the accountability when you misplaced
a
statement, by about 14 years, then put quotation marks around a paraphrase to
charge cut and run blah, blah, blah.

I guess you have to stick to your guns and never ever admit to a mistake
like a certain chief executive. Your major assault on one of our councilmen
included making a fuss over his use of Wiki to support your Columbus Day
tantrum.

2007-07-30 Thread justifiedright
Mario I'm not sure why we ended up arguing over this.

I said in the beginning of the thread that I thought you were right.
I believe the Wiki AP section needs to be updated.

Again, I said you were right about that. Not sure what more I can do
than say you are right about something.

I added also that I don't like Wiki as a reliable source. That
certainly isn't a knock against you personally. I just don't trust
the website.

I understand that you do trust it more than I do.

I don't know why that disagreement requires you and I to go back and
forth at eachother like we did. For some reason, we fell into it.

I hope we can end this where we agree - updating the AP Wiki page is
necessary, and appears to be underway.
