I did listen. Only Randy Bishop said a public official should not do PR (go figure). Your post said each of us said that. It was a matter of that it could not be built without amendation of the WRP. The city wants you to beleive in science fiction. As I said from the beginning, all it had to do was amend the plan and ask for nothing in return. It could have made its case for that. I've looked not to put one penny in my pocket - only in the public coffers. I made up nothing, from the Triangle to today, but truthfully - I don't care anymore. The people of AP are just too used to being taken advantage of. I will not disturb you of your notions, just don't try to make true what isn't. So yes, I was all talk with regard to C-8. Here's a new spin to the JK negativity. Instead of people outside of AP being worried about coming here due to bad publicity (which is just an ugly truth that some people want to keep hush hush), I think that some people, like Allan, won't be getting my business because of the bad PR they are bringing themselves due to the ugly and negative attitude they are showing us. While I think Allans store looks intriguing, i'll never spend a penny there because of the things he posts from time to time. Let me start by prefacing with the fact I didn't personally see the comments attributed to Jim. That said, I have read many of the posts here and based on the back and forth my issue with Keady is perhaps a bit different than many I read. I don't believe the debate is whether his statement was right or wrong, too few or too many. The issue is really whether Jim, in seeking and getting the responsibility to represent us as an elected official, has an obligation to speak more carefully and promote the city rather than point out the negatives in a venue such as ABC. That's not to say he should not fight the issues he believes are important, just that as an elected official there is a time and a place. As an elected official he is no longer just the community advocate who can say anything in any venue. The citizens of AP entrusted him with a responsibility not just to fix the bad but to promote the good. He seems to forget that there are people he is now responsible for representing (homeowners, business owners, etc.) who rely the continued positive momentum and press AP has recieved over the past several years. Many have staked their life savings to this momentum. To have someone that has been elected to serve their interests so directly highlight the negatives so aggressively to the entire region seems like a violation of trust. To me this is not about truth. This is about being more responsible to the voters and citizens of AP than to his own agenda or the viewers of ABC. And there I believe he failed. I believe he failed me. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: Jim Keady Inconvenient Truth(s)
I really care about bad public relations concerning AP. Here's a quick little story. I have a friend who lives in Montclair. She was planning a visit around Halloween, and when we were talking about it, she said I don't have to worry about being shot, do I? How do you think that made me feel? Where did she get her info? Not from the ABC news thing, but a few days earlier in the NY Times. That being said, I think it sucks that we have this stigma hanging over our heads, but I also think that focusing on the ABC/JK/200 bloods thing isn't really looking at the big picture. How about 19 yr. old kids having guns? And if we have a gang presence here, isn't that where the cheap guns are coming from? What about the drugs? AP has been a destination to get drugs for decades? Where do you think that comes from? Those are the issues that need to be addressed, not bad PR. Asbury has had bad PR for decades. I really don't think one more bad PR incident defines the city, Asburys history does that all by itself. I love living here. Funny thing is, my boss is worried about me, and asks if all the problems make me want to move out. My answer is always the same. No, I love Asbury. Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Jim Keady Inconvenient Truth(s)
Hinge, What people do not realize is that there has been success in Asbury. Even if the buildings that are close to be completed never went up, the town has changed. In part to the development rights being removed from the courts. The success of the town cam from people like me who bought a house, renovated and now live in it. I maintain my property etc. The store owner are another example. The town today is better than it was in 2001. If Keady is correct that there are 200 Blood gang members here then there is no issue. Show us the proof. If his statement is false, while it may not be the only reason it would add to the list of reasons not to invest in this town for others. We don't need additional reasons to keep people away. We have enough real reasons we don't need false reasons. In addition as a resident I would much rather hear how the police is on the case etc. Not that the problem is bigger than it may be. - Original Message From: Hinge [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.comSent: Sunday, November 5, 2006 9:51:23 AMSubject: [AsburyPark] Re: Jim Keady Inconvenient Truth(s) Here's a new spin to the JK negativity.Instead of people outside of AP being worried about coming here due to bad publicity (which is just an ugly truth that some people want to keep hush hush), I think that some people, like Allan, won't be getting my business because of the bad PR they are bringing themselves due to the ugly and negative attitude they are showing us.While I think Allans store looks intriguing, i'll never spend a penny there because of the things he posts from time to time.I don't think he deserved a "fuck off" though.--- In [EMAIL PROTECTED] ups.com, Allan Peterson nnjallans1@ ... wrote: Awww that was nice. This whole thing against Jim Keady is bullshit. Attacking him because of the 200 Bloods comment is ridiculous. It may not be the exact number, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if there were that many of them in our town. The sick thing about all of this is that he's basically being asked to not tell the truth...hush hush, don't let the outside world know what a scary place AP is. What a joke. Just disgusting. And this is coming from Debbie at the Wonderbar...claiming it hurt their business and it'll prevent new biz from coming our way. Give me a break. Asburys legacy of neglect, crime, drugs etc. are the problem, not Jim Keady. And speaking of the Wonder Bar...I worked there one night this past summer. Most unfriendly place i've ever been to. Debbie wasn't nice at all to me, and neither was the rest of the staff. Only nice person there was a bouncer. Unfriendly places keep me away. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In reference to NJ Dave'scomment: Keady's campaign included gathering information and listening to the thoughts and concerns of the people of Asbury Park. [AsburyPark] Re: Jim Keady Inconvenient Truth(s)
If there isn't a substantial gang problem in AP, then why are things like this happening? This is from Sept. 29 of this year; FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP Police have identified more than 200 gang members in Neptune, Red Bank, Freehold, Long Branch and Asbury Park, and another 200 in the county jail, many of whom are from Monmouth County, according to county Prosecutor Luis Valentin. Gang activity has also been detected in suburbs, including Howell, Matawan, Manasquan and Belmar, Valentin said Thursday at a conference on gangs. The county's relative affluence does not make it immune from gangs, he said. Among those operating here are the Bloods, Crips, Almighty Latin King/Queen Nation, Mexican and Central American gangs, motorcycle gangs, and hate and extremist groups, the prosecutor said. He did not want to alarm residents, but he wanted to educate them about the perils and presence of gang activity and make sure children know gang members should never be role models, Valentin said. Thursday's conference at the county Police Academy was not open to the public, but reporters were invited in for the initial opening remarks. The conference was one of the quarterly gatherings the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Jersey plans to hold in different parts of the state so police can share information on gangs. The office conducted a statewide gang intelligence conference earlier this year. About 160 law enforcement personnel from federal, state, county and local departments attended on Thursday. Represented locally were Aberdeen, Asbury Park, Belmar, Bradley Beach, Freehold, Hazlet, Highlands, Howell, Keyport, Lakewood, Little Silver, Long Branch, Manasquan, Matawan, Middletown, Neptune, Red Bank, Sea Bright, Union Beach, West Long Branch, and the prosecutor's offices from Monmouth and Ocean counties. U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie said gangs are not just a law enforcement problem, but a socioeconomic problem. In cities such as Newark and Irvington, police are fighting to take streets back from gangs, he said. Federal laws can help in the battle, he said. In the federal corrections system, there is no parole, and criminals serve their time in prisons outside New Jersey, making it much more difficult for them to run their criminal enterprises from behind bars, Christie said. It also makes it tougher for fellow gang members to keep in contact with them, he said. Christie's office has become known for prosecuting political corruption cases. In the next four years, Christie said, he also wants his office to be recognized for taking on gangs. We're ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with you, he told the officers. Anti-gang initiatives In July, Bloods members were reportedly arrested in Keansburg and Asbury Park. In June, 22 members of Los Cafeteros and Sureno 13 were taken into custody in Red Bank, and in November, seven MS-13 members were arrested in Lakewood, authorities said at the time. Asbury Park and Lakewood were among a dozen or so municipalities chosen earlier this year to participate in Operation CeaseFire, a state anti-gang program. Long Branch Public Safety Director William A. Richards said his department also has a number of anti-gang initiatives. We don't have what I would characterize as a virulent gang problem, as evidenced by criminal activity associated with gangs, but it's certainly something we keep an eye on, he said. Thursday's event was co-sponsored by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, the Middle Atlantic-Great Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement Network and the East Coast Gang Investigators Association. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In reference to NJ Dave'scomment: Keady's campaign included gathering information and listening to the thoughts and concerns of the people of Asbury Park. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, MarioAPNJ@ wrote: In reference to NJ Dave'scomment: Keady's campaign included gathering information and listening
[AsburyPark] Re: Jim Keady Inconvenient Truth(s)
Greetings from Long Branch: I find it rather interesting how the business community can now beat up Mr. Keady, because he had the courage to admit there is a gang prescence in Asbury. The politicians of the Culture of Corruption deny the negetives and create unfounded positives, all in a manner of promotion of an agenda. What if - people came to Asbury under the false impression there is no violence problem there, hiding facts relevent to what is going on in a given community could open a community up to liability. We have seen that in times pasted when a community hides health and public related issues. (ie: cancer clusters, electro magnetic fallout, brown fields etc) It was extremely courageous of Keady to admit a problem. Instead of bashing him, you all should be working on controlling addition violent episodes there. Before anyone dare assail him for his concern and opinion of the gang violence in Asbury Park, they should produce evidence that he is wrong or shut up. Having no basis of FACT for demanding his resignation and relocation out of town - those who make such a demand should be looking to relocate themselves. Speaking the truth is a seldom occurence in New Jersey. We should support and rally to those in elected office who dare to do so. Now get out those rosaries and ask the beads to protect you from my opinion on even this matter. LOL Rev. I disagree. He should not have given out that number unless there are facts to back up. The town is too small in size and 200 would represent a rather large percentage meaning that gang crime is out of control. People have risked everything to create businesses, fix homes etc. This do-gooder must realize his words can cause damage. I am sure gangs exist but 200 members? Well organized? If that was the case then he should show his facts. I don't think people have a problem with him saying that gang members reside in town. It is when he goes on a new broadcast and starts ramblining numbers. Why? So he can show he is going to save the town with basketball programs? More homeless shelters? Rent control? What does the number have to rise to before someone says something? It's not like it is news. Legislators take steps to combat gangs Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 05/19/06 BY TOM BALDWIN GANNETT STATE BUREAU TRENTON Lawmakers stepped up the war on street gangs Thursday, advancing a raft of measures they hope might restore calm. One in particular said gangland defendants had to prove bail money comes from legitimate sources, erasing the oft-repeated parlay in which a gang member bails out another with cash of uncertain sources stuffed into a brown paper bag. The steps also include special gun courts, shielding the identities of victims and lawyers and confiscating vehicles of people nabbed with illegal weapons. Where there's drugs, there's gangs, said Assemblyman Peter Barnes, D-Middlesex, chairman of the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee. Barnes sat in front of a state map that showed gang presence spreading across the state from urban centers to suburbs in Monmouth, Camden and Middlesex counties, across the Interstate 78 corridor to Warren County and in pockets around southern New Jersey. Heck, they're in Princeton, said Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, D- Mercer. It is a package of triage legislation, said Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-Mercer, where late-March gang battles on Trenton streets killed six people, including a 7-year-old girl and two bystanders, all in a 24-hour period. First Assistant Attorney General Anne Milgram urged passage of the package, saying all major violent gangs are present in New Jersey, from South Jersey bikers to West Coast street groups that have expanded east. She mentioned gangs in Asbury Park, Lakewood, Camden, Vineland and Trenton. I am sure gangs exist but 200 members? Well organized? If that was the case then he should show his facts. [AsburyPark] Re: Jim Keady Inconvenient Truth(s)
Well, while I agree with you on putting out a number without checking the facts...one indisputable fact is that we do have gangs in our city. Doesn't matter if there are 20 members, or 200. Either can cause alot of bad things to happen, and no matter how many are physically here at one time, they are connected to people in other communities. So, let's say there are 20 bloods in AP, another 20 in Neptune, and 20 more in Lakewood. Don't you realize that gangs are big in the drug biz, and members seek out others in all of these towns to do business? Are you for sugar coating the truth to attract new business's? Do you think it's right to hide the facts from prospective new residents, or business's that might consider moving to AP? I don't. Gangs and crime are a fact of life here. That's the real issue, and I think argueing about public opinion about our town is pointless. AP has had a bad reputation for 30 years, maybe more. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Allan Peterson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I disagree. The sick thing about all of this is that he's basically being asked to not tell the truth...hush hush, don't let the outside world know what a scary place AP is. What a joke. Just disgusting. And this is coming from Debbie at the Wonderbar... claiming it hurt their business and it'll prevent new biz from coming our way. I am not for sugar coating the truth but I am for the truth. If Larry Fishman went on the news and say the development is well underway how many posts would be on this board bitching and moaning? Yes there are buildings going up but not 200. I am well aware that gangs are all over. That is not my issue or the issue the UZE, Coaster etc the issue is why did he say 200 on tv? - Original Message From: Hinge [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.comSent: Friday, November 3, 2006 1:16:53 PMSubject: [AsburyPark] Re: Jim Keady Inconvenient Truth(s) Well, while I agree with you on putting out a number without checking the facts...one indisputable fact is that we do have gangs in our city. Are you for sugar coating the truth to attract new business's?Do you think it's right to hide the facts from prospective new residents, or business's that might consider moving to AP? I don't. Gangs and crime are a fact of life here. That's the real issue, and I think argueing about public opinion about our town is pointless. AP has had a bad reputation for 30 years, maybe more. --- In [EMAIL PROTECTED] ups.com, Allan Peterson nnjallans1@ ... wrote: I disagree.
