Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Higher Sampling Rate for Transporter

2009-08-23 Thread WSLam

Before I had my dedicated room, diff resolution files make little diff.
I think you really do need a very revealing system and a proper room for
the difference to shine through.

Also, if RR is now selling HRx being 24/176.4, it will nice if SD has a
player that can play back this format without resampling on the fly.

I am not one of those tweakers you think I am...

Yes, I went to the 'source' and emailed Sean directly to ask him about
the possibility of anything higher than 24/96.

His reply is this No, 96KHz is the maximum. There are many limiting
factors that come into play above that, mainly CPU cycles and memory for
buffering. The forums might be a good place to ask about resampling, I'm
not really
up to speed on the best server-side tools but I think there may be a
way to do what you want on-the-fly, in SC.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Higher Sampling Rate for Transporter

2009-08-17 Thread WSLam

When the Transporter was first launched, I recalled Sean Adams
mentioning that there's plenty untapped horsepower under the hood.

I am wondering if there is any plan to support higher sampling rate to
pass through... I use the Transporter as a 'transport' feeding into the
Berkeley Alpha DAC.

Companies like Reference Recordings are now selling higher sampling
material. It's a great way to get better sound. e.g., RR offers 24 bit
176.4 kHz material for purchase. But the Transporter maxes out at
24/96...

On a separate note, what is the best way to down and re-sample from
24/176.4 to 24/96 on OS X?

Thanks.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has managed to improve the
Transporter substantially with an external DAC.

I use a DCC2 SE.
As with all mix and match, you can always get a DIFFERENT sound, but
whether different equals good, that's a whole different topic.
The Transporter, imho, gives most high end DAC a run for its money. The
DAC is excellent. I have it setup so that I could listen to the
Transporter's analog out vs DCC2 SE processed signal with a click of a
button, and in a casual listening session, everyone (3 people)
preferred the Transporter's sound. The DCC2 SE is a little more
extended on the top end... but I really don't know if that mean it's
better...

I have also tried using the DCC2 SE as master clock. I PREFER to stick
with the internal clock on the transporter. Using the DCC2 SE as master
clock give a slightly more clinical sound. Perhaps cleaner, but
definitely more clinical.

we choose to use, to uncomplicate things, as you say - but as soon as

don't like that kind of ambiguity, but if you embrace it you are closer
to the universe's secrets. If there is anything I have learned in this
life it is that answers do not lie at the extremes, no matter how
convenient that would be. The best answer is usually found in the
 middle somewhere.

I ripped the board out of a SB2, modified it a lot, stuck it in a box
with a DAC board and some linear power supplies and it sounds fab - as
good as anything I have had or borrowed.

But I think with the TP I could ditch my preamp too so may be the
 business.

Hi again

Like I said, I admire scientists' curious minds. Without questionings
some of the fundamentals, many breakthroughs would not have happened.
But imo, you have to draw a line when enough experiments are performed
and verified a certain theory or model, that you have to accept that it
is the 'truth' until some one manages to come up with a new angle for an
experiment and disprove it. If you do not accept the possibility of some
form of truth and facts do indeed exists, you no longer live in a world
that we can touch upon, feel upon. Reality will become virtual if you
have absolutely no 'facts'. In fact I just recently read one of
Richard Feynman's lectures in the book The Meaning of It All, in which
he went in depth about what the term 'scientific' means. If you just
dream of models after models, then I guess you will be glad to get into
the String theory camp. At some point, you do need to draw a line to
differentiate facts vs fictions. imho. i am no scientist.

But again, this is just a piece of consumer electronics. I see no
reason why you would put yourself through that kind of torture. Buy it.
If you dont like it, I am sure you can get rid of it on audiogon in no
time with minimal loss. Then you can go back to your modified SB3.

The Scientiifc American article I referred to in an earlier post is
called The Tyrrany of Choice. Highly recommended!

treat the following as a fact 'aspirin relieves headaches'. It might
not be true for everybody or every headache, but it is a useful truth
for the vast majority of people when they have a headache. But when a
Copernicus postulates that the facts fit better with the outrageous
idea that the earth revolves around the sun, the so-called fact that
everyone accepts the sun revolves around earth, is not so useful. Its
useful to know that jumping from the 26th floor will almost definitely

his self as the only power source. Its useful to know increasing the

And that is why no one can tell you how good the Transporter is to your

enough to prove that.

That is why I have replied on those threads wanting to modify the
Transporter to wait and listen first. The Transporter is indeed an
excellent sounding machine, even when compared to my DCC2 SE which
costs over 10x more. The Transporter presents a real value and shows
how solid design and engineering can make a true audiophile grade
product affordable.

Quite the statement, and yet I have to agree, espcially at the price
range, or a few times exceeding the price range of the Transporter.
Except for maybe a few of the 'top' DAC out there, I would say the
Transporter is extremely competitive. And with its capability to be
used as a standalone DAC, it is indeed an extremely good value.

Do let us know how the direct setup works out. You can limit the max

under the Player Settings in SS.

2006-09-28 Thread WSLam

Ok, done more listening. Let me describe what I am hearing.

Using DCC2 SE in Master Clock mode, BNC out to Transporter Word Clock
In. Changed settings in Player Settings...

It sounds different. I was at first a little confused to the sound, but
after more listening, and comparing it with and without the DCC2 SE as
master clock, I think I am coming to realize the difference.

Images are more defined and seem to be more precise with the clock
cable. This clearer outline of the images make things more 'position'
oriented. And somehow, the sound seems slightly less blended then
without the clock cable. The size of the sound is now very defined. The
amount of 'space' (air some would call) seems to have been enhanced.

I need to do further listening. On some music, the clocked setup is
obviously more transparent and reveal more subtilties. But on some
recordings, it almost makes things a tad too dry for my taste.

need more time...

Your description seems to fit in with my experience in reducing jitter.
Either when using a better digital cable (a glass toslink) or when I
added a modded Elpac to my SB3.
Again, I feel the jitter spectrum of the SB3 (and based on your 'too
dry' description, the transporter as well) seems very 'euphonic' ie.
when there is jitter the SB3 sounds smooth (and actually soft). I feel
the 'air' or space/ambience is actually the best indicator of high
fidelity. The 'dryness' will be perceived as 'realistic' at higher
volumes. It will also be more dynamic and the bass should be tighter
 (is it ?) as well.

And I thought I would have an early night! 4am here.
Did nothing by A/B/C listening between A) unclocked Trans+DCC2SE, B)
clocked Trans+DCC2SE and C)Trans Analog Out.

You are absolutely right. I think what shocked me initially turns out
to be a level of fidelity I have not experienced before. Things are SO
clear it's a little eerie at first, but I am learning to appreciate it.
Bass is indeed tighter. The most difference I still find is in the
imaging. Images are now in a much more 3D soundstage. The 'air' quality
is definitely higher as well. So in short, these descriptions apply to
ABC. Frankly, C can often be the most comfortable sounding one.
Whereas A has this surreal realism that is hard to resist. When I
listen to C, I hear little wrong with the sound. But when I switch to
A, things become much clearer. B is a good compromise, but if I have to
choose, I will set up A and C and that will be an easy switch on the
preamp.

Must sleep. Hope I am still making sense.

WS: I think you need to make sure the word sync is really working.

If you connect the _analog_ outputs on Transporter and then set it to
word clock in mode, then try to play a track, what do you get? It
should be playing back very slowly, like maybe 1/2 speed, since it has
 no valid clock input.

Forget what I said before about clicking - that's applies only you're
 going the other direction.

In this case, if the work clock is not working then you would get no
sound at all over s/pdif. If you unplug the clock cable and you still
get sound, it means the clock sync was not functioning beforehand.

Ok this is what I just tried, all with Transporter set to Word Clock in
Mode.

1) Transorter Analog Out - Sounds NORMAL
2) Transorter Analog Out, I physically disconnect the clock cable -
Sounds like a snail
3) Transporter Digital Out, Turn off DCC2 SE Master Clock - No Sound.
DCC2SE cannot lock the signal.

Sounds right?

Innards of Transporter. Overview. Surprised how empty it is. The case
finishing is top notch! The fit is nice. And they put some very nice
touches to it... putting tiny pieces of tapes close to the screw
mounts, I believe to damp the chassis a little. No metal-to-metal
rubbing.

using a Transporter as a preamp/DAC with other digital sources (DVD
player, PVR), and would like to know how convenient (or otherwise)
 switching inputs is.

In the Transporter, there is a new item (customizable) called Digital
Inputs in the Root Menu. You just neeed to scroll there and then
select. It's not as easy as having a direct button on your remote, but
pretty convenient nonetheless. It should be good enough...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporters have arrived!

2006-09-25 Thread WSLam

Ok, 30 mins with the Transporter, using ANALOG out.
A brief impression:

1) Dual Display is way cool. SlimServer 6.5 allows you to customize
each display, which results in a much more complete visual display
compare to the limited display on the SB2/3.

2) The KNOB is COOL. It makes a little noise (not during playing), but
the 'tension' varies. Very cool. I don't really know HOW it works yet,
but I KNOW it is way cool

3) The backlit remote is great! It is still very much plastic, and
quite light, but it is totally functional. Definitely a step up from
the SB2/3 era. I wish the plastic isn't shiny though. Fingerprints all
over it in no time.

4) SlimServer6.5 has many Transporter only features, such as the word
clock function, polarity etc. Still exploring

5) Dual WiFi Antenna. Where my SB3 used to get 80% strength, I now get
*98%*!

6) LOVING IT!

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporters have arrived!

2006-09-25 Thread WSLam

ok, a few quick comments... only short ones because I am in shock!
The ANALOG output of the Transporter is amazingly good! Even when
compared to the Digital output feeding into a SOTA EMM Labs DCC2 SE!
The difference is really not as significant as you may think. For those
getting a Transporter, you have to think HARD before you decide to
actually use an external DAC. If the DCC2 SE can only edge so little
ahead (if at all) of the Transporter, what other DAC can you use to
pair it with the Transporter?

I had full intention to compare the Transporter Digital Out vs the
SB3's Digital out, but the excellent performance (right out of the box)
of the Transporter's ANALOG performance has totally grabbed my
attention.

Give it a good hard listen before you plan any mod. I think Sean has
put a great deal of engineering genius into the Transporter. The Power
Supply in the Transporter is clearly REALLY good... no way could you
get sound like this from a so-so power supply.

I just told my friends via email, for those who are waiting for their
Transporter, be a little more patient. For those who plan to buy a DAC
to go with a SB3, hold your decision... andfor those who has a 'so-so'
DAC with a SB3, it may be time just to get the Transporter.

One thing I did notice is that the Analog Out of the Transporter is
much lower in volume then the vol I get with the digital input going
through my EMM Labs DCC2 SE. So when you guys compare the sounds
eventually make sure you 'sync' the volume. The DCC2 SE has independent
vol settings for each input, which made comparisons very easy.

Did some more listening, still doing Trans Analog vs Trans Digital + EMM
Labs DCC2 SE.

EMM is definitely a little richer and fuller sounding, but no way does
the Transporter sounds thin in anyway. In fact, the Transporter has
excellent resolution throughout. DCC2SE also seems to have a slight
edge in the overall balance which imo, affects the overall soundstage
(not imaging).

But the Transporter is gonna give many 'hifi' DAC a run for its money.

Sleestack,
I dont think you will be disappointed. I want to let it break in a
little more before I comment further, but so far so good. Unless it
takes a turn for the worse after break in (which is unlikely), I think
this is another landmark product from SD.

ModelCitizen,
I shared your feelings when I looked at the photos. But the black one I
am using now, from a distance (12 ft or so), the buttons are really not
intrusive. What I thought was surprising is that if you really use the
front panel to choose music etc (instead of remote) the buttons are
actually extremely functional. No menu and no multi-function
buttons/navigation. direct buttons... very very functional. Going from
a button-less SB3 may takes a little getting used to, but I have a
feeling it will be easier to live with then you may think.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporters have arrived!

2006-09-25 Thread WSLam

A few issues, which I am sure SD will fix with the next firmware. And
none of these affects the way the T sounds...

1) The very cool knob makes a rattling sound occasionally. Apparently,
when the player firmware interacts with the rotary encoder firmware.
This causes a click sound when the magnetic brake in the encoder to be
audible. It's not very loud, but new Transporter owners should be aware
that it is normal (at this point anyway) to hear that little rattling
sound. It happens a few times during initial setup, then during
operation, it seems to be rather random.

2) On my unit, when I power off, there's a tiny green dot on the left
that gets lit up. just ONE pixel. I can only see it when I am within 5
ft of the unit.

Just a few quirks in case the fuutre perfectionist Transporter owners
wonder... =)

2006-09-24 Thread WSLam

Transporters have arrived! Will post some photos soon.

A few quick comments:

Packaging is excellent. I do not like overpacked things, but this is
very sensibly packed. Well done.

The Transporters themselves are very highly finished. Wil post a few
pics soon. But in short, SD knows what they are charging and know what
they must deliver. VERY well done. Even among my 'hi end' equipment, I
have to say this is one of the better looking ones. I have a black and
silver on hands now. Silver is not mine... so after the initial photos,
I will only have the black one...

now what sucks is I have to go to work! so can't play with it until
tonight!

removing or hiding incomplete skins to avoid users getting into this

you can manually navigate to any skin by doing

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Clock Sync Cable

2006-09-20 Thread WSLam

In anticipation of the Transporter, I will be using the Transporter
digital out into my DCC2 SE and since the DCC2 SE has a clock out, I
could connect it to the Transporter clock in.

So I need a BNC to BNC cable. What kind of cable? Anything will do? Or
is there a certain type of wiring I need for the clock sync?

Thanks

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] A real commitment to SB: sold my CD12

2005-09-12 Thread WSLam

Just want to share.
Ever since I got the SB2, I had not listened to a single CD. So there
it was, a nice Linn CD12 sitting on my shelf collecting dust (while I
sit on the couch collecting dust).
So I finally sold off my CD12. And the thing is, as perfect as the CD12
was as a CD player, I do not miss it a single bit. I am now using the
SB2 with a EMM Labs DCC2. Great sound, much greater convenience. I use
a Tablet PC (X41T) as my remote. Using the Touch skin, I see that as
the perfect setup for me for now.

PhilNYC Wrote:
WS...congrats! But I did notice that your signature still has the Linn
Unidisk; are you still using that? By many accounts, the Unidisk is
better as a transport than the CD12. And of course your beautiful
EmmLabs DAC is also probably a lot better sounding than the CD12.

Hmm, EMM has a diff sound from the CD12. CD12 is still a tad bit more
'musical', or rather maybe the EMM just offers more 'resolution' and
details that the CD12 tends to 'smooth over'. But I am fine with
either. I think it boils down to personal preference. There really is
no absolute.

Unidisk... yes I do have it, but rarely use it. I do have some SACD
that I use the Unidisk with. CD performance on the Unidisk 1.1 is
so-so...SACD sounds very good, but ironically, I think DVDA sounds the
best. I also use it as my DVD Video player.

PhilNYC Wrote:
FWIW, I'm finding that I like listening to music using my SB2 to feed my
Dodson DA-218 DAC. On critical listening (and in system demonstrations
for potential customers, since I am an audio dealer), I will use my
modified Sony S7700 transport because it does sound a little bit better
than the SB2. But it's damn close...and my S7700 has about $1300 worth
of mods on it (more than the cost of my SB2 and eMac combined!)...

I have personally tried many transports vs the SB2. Honestly i think if
the RIP are perfect, there should be NO difference. The perfect
transport is to deliver the bits accurately. And once you are there,
you can't go 'beyond' that.

2005-07-26 Thread WSLam

I got my Big Ben off someone on the TacT Yahoo User Group.
A lot of people there tried it and gave up on it, claiming it makes
absolutely no audible difference, and in some cases, actually degrade
the sound (collapsing soundatage etc).

I hear a difference, but I a not ready to make my judgement yet. It all
boils down to 'personal preference'. But using the SB2 with the BB, the
'highs' are indeed a little more tame. Less 'Digititus'...

Hi kbelinski
I am in similar situation. I have maybe 10% of music in Chinese.
But let me tell you, get the SB2 now. 1) you can control your music via
a computer UI (notebook, tablet pc) using SlimServer web UI, all chinese
will display there. 2) the SB2 is already ready, so it's a matter of
font library via firmware upgrade? it's a matter of time. and you can
easily listen to the 70% of music you have now.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB Audiophile Wish List

2005-06-21 Thread WSLam

I am so happy with the SB2 (replacing slowly, my Linn CD12) that I
really hope SD will build an 'audiophile' version of the SB.

Here are a list of features I could think of! Hope you guys can all
pitch in:

- No Internal DAC. Save the cost, and spend it on elsewhere
- AES Digital Out (That would make my day!)
- No Volume control, the simpler the circuit, the better
- WBT or Neutrik connectors
- Make it heavier! =) audio nuts are all for heavy equipment!
(otherwise, the AES cable is gonna make the SB2 'move')
- A even better, higher resolution display.
- more 'solid' feel remote control

Anyone else?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Introducing myself

2005-06-18 Thread WSLam

Hi Awylwin, The SB2 is suprisingly good as a transport. I guess in
theory, it has every right to be. the idea makes sense. In fact,
assuming you have perfectly ripped music, the SB2 should take the
variable of the transport out of the equation.

I am now using awaken.com to rip the rest of my music. They provid
excellent customer service and are very accomodating (tagging wise). I
really look forward to having ALL my CDs in a lossless format.

Other then the PSU, the unit should be 'bit perfect', right? But I
suppose the remaining issue will be the jitter/clock issues?
