2007-07-12 Thread andy_c

There is actually some rational information on this subject as well.
See:

http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/ampins/groundloops/grndloop.htm

Figure 3. For equipment with an ungrounded chassis, one can measure
the AC voltage from the chassis to safety ground. When I first thought
about this, my impression was that reversing the mains plug would only
reverse the polarity of the AC error signal and not affect its
magnitude. But apparently this relationship does not always hold with
real hardware. The only reason I can think of for this is some kind of
asymmetrical load between positive and negative supplies of typical
hardware, giving a partial cancellation of the residual AC signal in
the preferred state. Because the residual signal is from an
asymettry of the transformer, the optimum polarity will vary from
unit to unit.

Of course, audibility of this situation is debatable - yet I'm sure it
will be trotted out by the usual suspects for some time to come.

Ok, now that we are (sort of) back on topic, here's my suggestion for
most fundamental improvement to the SB3/SB+/Trainspotter (I've only
tried it in the SB3 though):

Remove the ~12MHz crystal.

Reason: Uncorrelated noise caused by the 2 crystal oscillators sharing
the same HCU04 package(and possibly the same silicon area on the

for the folks who never heard of that, I found this nice article:
 http://www.audaud.com/audaud/JUL01/EQUIP/equip3JUL01.html

NO!!
The article suggests disconnecting the protective earth connection from
your equipment to make measurements or to improve sound quality. DO NOT
ATTEMPT TO DO THIS FOR ANY REASON. IF YOUR EQUIPMENT HAS AN EARTH
CONNECTION IT'S BECAUSE IT'S REQUIRED FOR SAFE OPERATION. TOUCH THE
UNEARTHED BOX, AND THE FIRST YOU'LL KNOW OF A FAULT SOMEWHERE IN YOUR
SYSTEM COULD BE A FATAL ELECTRIC SHOCK.

(After all, you wouldn't go round replacing all your fuses with nails
to 'improve the power supply', would you? You would? Darwinian
evolution in action. Go right ahead).

But, suppose for a moment that you were actually dumb enough to make
the measurement anyway, or that your equipment is designed such that
the earth connection isn't needed. What are you actually measuring?

With the case disconnected, either by double-insulation from the mains
or because some idiot has removed the earth connection, it's
essentially floating. Maybe it's connected to the analogue ground which
is shared with the rest of your system, but not necessarily. It may also
pick up a voltage by capacitive and/or electromagnetic coupling from the
power supply, but in this case the impedance will be extremely high, and
only a rather expensive meter will pick it up.

So, what you're measuring is the potential between this undefined
point, and earth at some other point. Meaningless - but audiophiles
like to find something they can measure and then come up with a rule
for what it should be.

It's not impossible for reversing the live neutral to make a
difference to the sound, though. In the UK at least (and presumably
elsewhere), the neutral wire is kept around earth potential while the
live oscillates either side of it. So, if inside your equipment there's
a live wire nearer some sensitive audio signal than the neutral, there
will be a greater degree of interference introduced. Swapping live
neutral effectively moves the noise source further away, which can
indeed help.

You can't tell whether this is the case by making meaningless
measurements of the voltage on the outside of the box, though. And the
idea of trying to 'match' these voltages across components is just...
well, rubbish too.

So, if you have reversible mains plugs, by all means swap them around
and pick whichever way you like the sound of. Just don't electrocute
yourself by doing something silly, OK? ;-)

AKM released the AK4397 DAC a couple of weeks ago - it's software
compatible with the AK4396, but not, sadly, pin compatible as it comes
in a 44 pin package.

But, if someone wanted to be creative with their Transporter, it could
be quite an interesting upgrade - just watch that the kludge (sorry,
adapter) used to mount it doesn't negate any benefit the new chip may
have.

On the sb3 you can remove it, but you lose the ability to play 48kHz
streams like internet radio, and possibly (?) the ability to downsample
96kHz stuff to 48kHz as well. Since transporter handles 96kHz natively
though, I'd guess it may be needed for that, and would avoid removing
it. Of course, I could be wrong.

You could always just buy better sounding music.

One unfortunate difference: the AK4397 isn't able to accept a 3.3v
digital supply, only 5.0v, though it does accept 3.3v logic input
levels. So, any modification would have to provide a 5.0v supply,
ideally separate from the analogue 5.0v, and would also have to
disconnect the digital outputs (which I doubt are needed anyway).

That's unless, of course, Transporter uses 5.0v to power the AK4396
digital side - anyone know? (Sean? Is there a reason to prefer one
voltage over the other?)

I have to disagree with you there. The reason it has a polarized plug
is so that the fuse is assured to be on hot side. That way if something
shorts out in there, when the fuse blows the unit will become cold. So
if you want to reverse them, do it INSIDE the chassis, AFTER the fuse
(not easy on Transporter since it's all wired on the PCB).

It's 3v3, but you could bypass regulator U9 to give it 5V. However then
you'd effectively have AVDD and DVDD tied directly together and this

Ah - there's an international variation there. Here in the UK, as I'm
sure you know, we have 3 pin plugs that have a fuse built into them on
the live (hot) side, so it's quite hard to electrocute yourself.

The only occasion on which it's normally possible to swap live
neutral is on equipment that has a non-earthed 'figure 8' plug, as a
lot of hi-fi kit does, and in those cases it's quite safe to plug it in
either way round as the kit has to be double insulated anyway. That's
the case I was thinking of, sorry for any confusion.

serves to specify the algebraic sign of the coupling *between* coils.
If I take a transformer symbol and swap the positions of all the dots
at once, that transformer with the swapped dots is electrically
equivalent to the original.

The entire start of the winding and end of the winding concept is
nonsense.

For a dual supply (positive and negative), one might envision getting a

this is so, then it's likely the result of asymmetrical capacitive
coupling between the primary and the two secondaries. The relationship
there is likely not going to be repeatable from one transformer sample
to the next, and certainly has nothing to do with transformer dots.

See figure 3 on this page:

But I haven't seen anyone provide evidence of improved audio
performance from doing this - only anecdotal evidence.

I've been told the best connection to the primary side is the one
that yields the lowest voltage reading from neutral to ground/chassis.

I've heard of this measurement of residual AC voltage and that makes
sense. This has nothing to do with transformer dots though. The dot
convention is just as I mentioned before. It relates to the algebraic
sign of the mutual inductance terms relative to the self inductance
terms when the equations are written out. Or measurement-wise, the
relative polarity of the AC voltage of the coupled coil to the driven
one.

I agree that reversing the primary wires may reduce the residual AC
voltage in some cases.

I think you'd want to measure from the local safety ground to the
signal common (say, outer ring of RCA jack), assuming the equipment
does not connect the chassis to safety ground. So this would only
apply to Class II (double insulated) equipment. But the transporter
AFAICT connects chassis to safety ground, so to make this measurement,
you'd have to break this connection - probably not wise unless you're
very familiar with safety issues.

Neutral is not a good ground reference because, although it does
eventually go back to the ground rod in the home, it carries the return
currents of equipment and appliances plugged into that line. So it will
have an AC voltage drop due its resistance from the point of measurement
to the ground rod and the current flowing through it. Ideally, the
safety ground wire will have no current flowing through it - unless
there's a ground fault in a piece of equipment plugged in somewhere.

So for class II equipment, this tweak is free - so why not? Just
reverse the plug. I'd still like to see some system noise measurement
that demonstrates that the tweak works though. There's so many
audiophile old wives' tales floating around it's hard not to be
skeptical.

I understand you fully

I have wached this forum for some time , actually since a couple of
month prior to the Transporter release and every day it gets more and
more unplesant .

Why i dont know but it surly started after the mass hystria stoped and
it was known that the transporter did not suppas the sound kval of even
the most excotic player.

Infact here in my comunity most people still use there fully moddified
sb3´s with special powersupplys and special dac´s because it clearly
sounds better then the TP and all off them have had the transporter
on trial.

And its all for the same reasons namly the glare.
Its funny with glare and glassyness you can liv a whole life hearing it
but its when its gone you hear it and when its gone you will never go
back to stock or glarish frontends again.

But i will still fullhartly recordment the transporter becaue there is
one area besides the fantastic userfriendlynes where it really shines
and that is when you plug it straigt into poweramps .

Here it sounds amazing and very musiacal and if the littel sb3 with
some help can sound amazing the transporter can surly also be made into
worldclass.

Forget about the angry tone there are still many helpfull people in
here .

(but be carefull when you say that you have found a way to make it
sound better for some its like challengeing there religion.)

I guess the problem is that as a pure 24/44.1 digital transport both
the SB and TP are pretty much as good as it gets...and can be
scientifically proven to be so. And then we have to add a SPDIF cable
and an external DAC and all bets are off.

However the moment you stick an internal DAC into the equation, the
analogue output is the net sum of the DAC chip designers view and the
surrounding circuits designers view of what things should sound like.
At this point science is replaced to some extent by preference.

There is nothing wrong with that - however as we know different people
prefer different things. There are no absolutes so you have to match up
your preferences with those of the product designers...or mod to taste.

Regards
Phil

PS why is audio the only topic that is a quasi-religion? Nobody on

C'mon Phil.
I did not say anything about less is more or absolute truth .

Maybe you have to get over putting words in others mouths.

I own a pair of Bryston BP20's and at the moment they are in the

I like the sound of my system without them in the chain.
So, I happen to agree with Harmonic on that point, my comment was
directed to him.

Yes it is true.

Even with 120v.

You want your gear to run In the same Phase as the rest of your gear.

Why do you say they are Critical?

What specific issue do you believe you are addressing?

Are you equipped to make your own conducted EMI measurements?

Did you spend many thousands of dollars having your design tested by a
certified EMI lab like I did, after installing your Critical LINE
FILTERS?

Are you aware that it is possible to create a new resonance that can
actually _increase_ emissions (especially radiated) by installing
filters where they don't belong?

That's just the AC jack... did you test all the other connections on
the unit after making all your other internal changes? It is quite easy
to drastically increase EMI just by moving a few wires around.

Did you test the noise floor of all the internal power supplies after
making your changes?

How about the analog outs?

Do you even have the foggiest idea if your design would pass regulatory
requirements in the countries where you do business? I'm not just
talking about CE/FCC, but also safety since you are modifying the AC
connections.

I would very much like to see some data showing the benefits your
Critical LINE FILTERS, or at least hear your theory as to why you think
they're a good idea.

Do you think I forgot to tell my guys to solder them in there or
something?

Although I'm sure you are an expert in RF and have designed many
products of your own for worldwide compliance, I will explain anyway
for the benefit of our other readers.

When designing complex PC boards, it's a good idea to put pads for
series elements wherever feasible on power and IO lines. Then when you
test the system for emissions, you may need to experiment with chokes,
ferrite beads, resistors, and caps to identify and suppress specific
sources RF. Often this process takes several weeks and many board
spins, since you can't always just cut-and-jump the changes. That's why
you need to put the pads in - you can't just wire these parts in by hand
and expect them to perform the same way. When the board is ready for
production, you don't go back and remove all the unused pads. There
would be no benefit to doing that, and you actually would run a
significant risk of changing the characteristics of those traces or
otherwise introducing some new error. These extra pads are referred to
as NP for not populated, but I'm sure you knew that. If you look at
pretty much any circuit board you will see places for parts that are not
there. That does not mean that the designer messed up. It means that
the part could be installed (or not) for any number of reasons, not
just EMI but also feature differentiation between products sharing the
same PCB, configuration bits such as an IRQ or clock speed, alternate
footprints for second-source parts, and so on. But again, I'm sure you
design circuit boards all day long and you know all of this.

So back to the case in point: in all likelihood, unless you actually
tested your modifications it is quite possible that you have created an
EMI problem where there was none before. But what do I know - I only
DESIGNED it, right?

So, now that I have answered your questions, would you kindly answer
mine? Thanks.

Sean,
When I received my first Transporter, The first thing I done was
plugged it in to my bench power bar. Without realizing, I had a noise
sniffer plugged in the same power bar….. Do need I say more?
I popped the cover of the transporter, and found to line filters was
omitted from the design. Further investigating, I realized that the
package size of the filter components was incapable of handling the
amount of current the transporter required. So instead of redesigning
the whole Pc board to accept properly sized filter parts, they was
jumper’ed and shipped, as is.

So if anyone is looking for a Validated Mod Install a HQ dual stage
line filter in between the IEC and pc board. The one I use has world
wide compliance built in to it. This can be the reason why your line
filter was ommitted from final design. ;c)

So your theory of I created is tossed out the window.. :c)

I did in fact test both of those ideas and there was no significant
difference in EMI or any other kind of noise. That SMPS is simply not a
source of noise to be concerned with, which is exactly why I chose it.
The only difference you'd get by putting a linear supply in it's place
would be that the system would weigh a couple more pounds and run a
hell of a lot hotter. Probably hot enough to need a fan or some beefy
fins on the side. The circuits which it powers are high-current things
which are not sensitive to ripple, such as the display filaments, the
magnetic braking mechanism in the knob, and the 1.2V supply for the CPU
core. It also powers the auto-ranging circuitry which measures the
incoming line voltage and configures the transformers properly for the
linear supplies. For that purpose it's nice to have a PS which can
comfortably handle a very wide range of input voltages.

There are a lot of audio companies who do things just because, but
that is not the way I engineer our products.

When i had the stock transporter i listended to it for 4 hours a day
for 2 weeks and every time it had a sligt glarness to the sound in the
top , and it was there all the time
The the aberdeen transporter where installed and the glare was gone
simple as that when i/we installed the stock one in the glare came back
its actually very simple you see when the differece is profound enourgh
you dont neeed blindfold.

People tend to spend a huge amounth of money on cables that have some
pretty excotic explanitaions going on and people eat it and here tiny
differences .
Now here we have a company that CLEARLY improved the preformans off
the transporter as transport why is that so bad ?

I have gamut l3 speakers tact millennium mk3 linn klimax 500 solos and
sonus faber cremonas speakers my system is high resolution top notch
gear.

so what MODs do we have yet:

- transporter MOD from aberdeen/mauimods

and I found the upcoming transporter TUBE (!) MOD
(according to manufacturer to be finalized this month!)

check it out here:
http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/index.php?topic=41197.new;topicseen#new

surely a tube mod will bring some warmth and like sean said distortion
(harmonic?) + even more noise level into the sound. but yes, if it
sounds better to my ears and the details and dynamics are still there,
I'll be with it.

here some more info (just some facts!):
we are working on a (TRANSPORTER) mod that replaces the stock analog
stage with our own Class A analog stage. I expect to offer a mod with
internal PS and single-ended tube stage (6H30 tube) for ~ $1250 US and
a mod with external PS and balanced tube stage, for ~ $2K US.

does any one has any experience with former stuff from modwright.com
and the sound quality?

well my amp only has CINCH (RCA) inputs, no XLR.

is there any way to use a converter-cable from XLR to RCA and does this
make sense? I heard that the XLR has about 3 volts ouput while the RCA
only around 1-2 volts?

so it really has to be a converting-cable and this on the other hand
will compromise the sound again?

is there any information to be found on the web about the
aberdeen/mauimods modification and how much it costs.

my interest is purely on the analog output stage (and whatever it
affects too).

thx!

You don't want to do that. Transporter has a proper
balanced-unbalanced converter driving its RCA outputs, so that the
RCAs get the maximal benefit of a fully balanced signal path from the
DAC up to that point of conversion. If you wire the XLRs to an RCA
input then you are only using one side of the circuit.

That's news to me.

does this also apply to transporter?

No. AC is AC. From the input transformer's perspective there simply is
no polarity, and phase can only be defined in relation to another
signal. Within your house wiring system you will have a neutral and a
hot, and they need to be wired correctly for safety reasons and for
proper functioning of multi-phase wiring. For example, a light bulb
socket has neutral connected to the sleeve of the plug so that you're
less likely to be shocked by touching it, but it would work just the
same if you turned them around.

Likewise, since the transformer primary is not connected to earth
ground, in that context their voltages are only meaningful in relation
to each other, so they're the same either way because a sine wave is
symmetric. If you were to connect a voltmeter or floating scope to the
leads it would not matter which way around you connected it, you would
get the same thing. The system's earth ground is for safety and is not
a return path for any input current, so phase of the power input is
meaningless.

I've never heard that one before. You might as well say that it matters
at what exact moment you play a track as you need to make sure that the
music is exactly aligned with the absolute phase of the mains supply.
And logically 50Hz units will sound different to 60 Hz units.

It's also potentially lethal if you start rewiring units to reverse
live and neutral in case only live is disconnected at any mains switch.

as far as I am informed it has something to do with several devices
connected to each other via. e.g. RCA cable connection.
you might get different potentials, if one device is connected out of
phase and the other isn't.

surely AC is AC and the whole sentence I wrote doesn't really make
sense.
but a lot of high-end manufacturers mark the hot phase on their audio
devices. and there are quite a lot of phase-detectors out on the market.
this is also used in the video domain.

electrode voltage / potential difference / difference of potential

are the correct words in english :)

I am sorry, my english is to bad for the correct technical
explantation.

you might have devices where it is uncritical. but there are surely
devices where you can hear a difference between the plug installment
(180° turn). different resistance in cables/ connections generate
different potentials in the devices and normally they balance through
the earth. but if they don't they can crawl over your RCA connections
and change your sound...

just try it out - its for free!

There are phase inversion switches on some gear for the audio output -
nothing to do with mains supply. Some people believe that some
recordings were made out of phase to others and by flicking the switch
you can restore them to their correct absolute phase. It also might
work in cases where other gear in the reproduction chain have reversed
phase during amplification stages. In other words, you make the
loudspeakers move in the same direction as the monitors in the studio.

Given that recordings are made up of many tracks with all types of
effects, compression and filtering on them, I doubt that this has any
audible effect. Of course having one channel out of phase to the other
is audible as it can cancel out pressure waves in the more monotonic
signals at the low end.

Personally, my ears are so shot by live concerts, I wouldn't claim to
hear any perceptible differences!

Personally I'm not a fan of super regs so this is where I would start on
the Transporter. S-regs are a great example of excellent specs and poor
sound IMHO.

Harmonic,

Perhaps you should try blind testing. I doubt you would hear a
difference.

As I have stated many times, NO difference was heard in the modded TP
through several very high end systems by a group of very experienced
audiophiles.

But if you want to spend your money on questionable upgrades that is
certainly your right.

As to modders making better gear than the original designer I guess you
would need to feel that way to justify your expenditure.

The Spanish have a saying for this: de ilusion tan bien se vive
