Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Garage Conversion - Sound advice ?

2012-02-10 Thread tank121

You can see the that the project was completed in July and somehow I've
managed
to delay ordering the dining room table we agreed to have!

Well, somebody is collecting the old dining room table on Sunday from
our current dining in preparation of it becoming a 2nd sitting
room/son's playroom!

The ordering of the new table is imminent ah.

My wife has agreed that the table can remain in the far left of the
room close to the window until we have guests around and we can then
move the table into the centre of the room.

Will this still work as the table will not be directly between me and
the speakers ? The speakers are approximately 5ft apart and I will
hopefully remain 5ft away - triangle, this is what I want isn't it ?

The only remaining task is to convince the Mrs to get the 1500 length
table instead of the 1810mm one! The 13cm could be vital!

Any other advise appreciated

Lined curtains and pole getting fitted tomorrow.

My wife is now debating whether to keep it as an audio room!

The recently purchased Yamaha YSP-2200 might end up in there together
with a new TV.

I couldn't ask for a better result 2 channel and home cinema at a

Well it is in mind but not in the wifes!

Sounds great, curtains still to go up at the opposite end of the room.
I should imagine this will improve the sound, stop reflections back off
the window.

Oh and the dining room table which is on a slow boat from China!

Should the speakers be further apart ? Closer to the side walls ? I
know I've got to experiment.

I take it that you are not planning on buying the Acer with a
pre-installed OS on it, however, if you decide to go the pre-installed
OS route just make sure to avoid Windows Vista at all costs. Windows 7
and Squeezebox Server play well together so if you can get a Revo with
Windows 7 pre-installed on it that would not be a bad way to go.

I also agree with Phil in that there will be no difference in the sound
quality between a Touch running a full version of SBS and one running
Tiny SBS.

24/96 files in flac or wav would play just fine standalone too 192 k
files would need transcoding, then a server is needed, btw hd tracks
have 24/96 versions you dont need to buy 192 k files you can save some
money

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Garage Conversion - Sound advice ?

2011-06-19 Thread Phil Leigh

Using a proper server will not change the sound but will improve
everything else about the whole experience (stability, performance
etc).

As for HDTracks... it's not about the numbers(24/96, 24/192) it's
about the sound of the masters. Sometimes these are worth getting, but
personally I would NEVER pay the extra premium for 24/192 if 24/96 or
24/48 versions were available.

There is no evidence that anyone can hear the difference between any
24/192 or 24/96 track and that same track properly downsampled to
redbook...

Room treatments... do NOT do anything yet. Wait until the room is
finished and fully populated with furniture and speakers are in their
final locations.

You need to live with the room for a bit.

I quite agree and I also find it fascinating. Idioms and idiomatic
expressions are the spices of any language. The Queen's English and all
its various permutations are all called English whereas many other
languages with similar dialects are each known by different name. For
example many of the Slavic tongues. I think that are bigger differences
between Cockney accent and a Southern American accent than between some
languages.

Ah, now you're mentioning some old devisive terms - The Queen's English

Now more specifically you should have said flat BBC English, as became
the norm here before the widespread acceptance of local dialect by
Auntie (Beeb, as in BBC).

My parents were both born and raised in Manchester, Lancashire.
I was born in the Middle East (Aden, to be specific), and raised all
over the place, as my father was in the Royal Air Force.

And the way I speak is very close to flat BBC English - it's an easily
understood, neutral accent, which is also quite accepting and
accomodating of slight local dialect and inflection.

My roots are North West England, specifically Manchester (I am a
lifelong supporter of Manchester City Football Club, as were/are most

Well finally decided on stands!

Custom Design stands ordered rs202 I think and with a custom made plate
and one column will be filled. £110.00

Dealer has agreed full refund on the brackets.

The one remaining question is this, I'm going to experiment with the
positining of the speakers. They will be quite close to the stud wall
(back wall) to improve the bass.

Once I've decided on the position do I feed the speaker cable in the
stud wall and drill back through the plaster ? The remaining speaker
cable will be concealed in the stand.

The other end of the cable would come through the Labgear single width
cable entry exit plate and the airlocks plugged into the amp.

Alternatively have the cable under the carpet ? This means I'll
probably be able to cut the Chord Rumour cable in half as I ordered 2 x
4m lenghts.
Should be able to sell it on!

Anyone interested in buying my Dynaudio audience 70 floorstanders ?

Since you are no longer using wall brackets, there is NO point in
running the cable through the wall. Just run it over/under the
carpet

What evidence have you got that the speakers will be any good in your
room? None. So why commit yourself so soon? Why not wait till the room
is finished - at least that gives you the chance to return or swap the
speakers if you don't like them. And to try others. Your room isn't
particularly hifi friendly, and you're spending a lot of money, so why
not give yourself a better chance of success than picking speakers
you've never heard in your room?

But we're happy to trade some of that substance for the improved stereo

Well if you're committed to the speakers without having heard them in
your own home, at least wait till the room's furnished and play around
with them before you commit to stands or even more wall mounts. Try the
different listening positions you have speculated here about. Get some
cheap height adjustable stands. Take care not to damage the speakers -
they may sound dreadful and you may wish to sell them. You're running
blind.

This is going to be my plan of action

1) Speaker cable is here - Chord rumour 2 x 4 metre runs (might be able
to sell
some depending on placement.)
2) Order speakers tomorrow
3) See if anyone on here can lend me some stands who lives locally (but
will need a particular type to accommodate the menuets.
4) Order the thick carpet and thick underlay.
5) Decorator is in 1 week today.
6) AV stand will be delivered

http://www.gecko-furniture.co.uk/ProductRanges/Sapphire/sapphire.html

7) Get thick lined curtains fitted.
8) Install kit
9) Test with stands and the table. (sitting at far end of room)
10) Play around with stands
11) Get two volunteers to hold speakers at level of the brackets (5ft)

12) Decide !

Any variations ?

I am now considering stand mounting my Dali Mentor Menuets instead.

My concern is this those.

They will be spaced wide enough to that they will not be pointing
directly the dining room table. They will be firing down the sides.

As they won't be higher than the table will all the sound be absorbed
by the table ?

Alternatively the table goes nearer to the window and we sit in front
of the speakers about 5-6ft away. Gap between speakers 6ft.

Any good retrogradations for stands up to £100.

No, it's not just you, I would too! - but there's a dining table in

It's NOT going to sound great with a table between you and the
speakers, no matter where you put them. I'd stick with wall mounting
and get them up high so that you will be mostly listening to the
tweeters not the tweeters reflected/interfered with by the table.

Is it a dining room with background speakers, or is it a listening room
with an (occasionally used) dining table somewhere where it won't get in
 the way of the music?

Putting the speakers on low stands to fire under the dining table won't
 achieve much imo.

I'm not sure - but the 6ft triangle will work and then stands with the
tweeter at (sitting) ear height will be best...

2011-05-29 Thread tank121

Your'e both kind of right.

If they're wall mounted it's going to be at a height of 5ft which
should hopefully clear the table with is 800mm heigh (2 ft 7.5
inches).

We would be about 15ft away with about 6ft between the speakers. Would
this work ?

If there wall mounted though there's no flexibility, on stands they can
easily be moved around.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Garage Conversion - Sound advice ?

2011-05-28 Thread tank121

OK i'm going with the 1ft in from the side walls.

The room is getting plastered on Tuesday so I take it I'll need to wait
a couple of days before drilling the holes for the mounting brackets.

Is it best to drill the holes before the wallpaper is on ?

The speaker cable is not in yet because the plasterboard has
intentionally be left off the stud wall in the storage area side of the
wall.

So
1) drill the holes
2)Fit the brackets, fit the bracket on the rear on the speaker and hang
it.
3) This will give the exact height for the wholes to be drilled for the
speaker wire to come through the stud wall ?

I'm only ordering the speakers on just should take about a week from
Denmark.

Managed to get them for £799.00 with the mountain brackets which cost
£50.00

Picked the carpet today.
This is going to be the AV cabinet. Your thoughts please.

It's now 15ft 2 x 7ft 9 width.

We will probably be sitting at the far end opposite where the speakers
will be

mounted on the stud wall in front of the window.

In between us and the speakers will be the dining table (if my wife
gets her own way). With the appropriate cover on.

The back boxes have been fitted today with the green glue and 2nd level
of plasterboard.

Plastering on Tuesday.

I'll post more pics later.

I've chosen chord rumour cable which will be connected directly into the
Dali Mentor Menuets on the wall.

At the other end though, should I have something like this

http://www.audiovisualonline.co.uk/dynamic/eshop_products.set/ref/2230/qed-aveq-wm11-gold-4mm-banana-speaker-socket-wall-plate-(twin)/display.html

The length of cable from the plates to the amp would be inches.

Or just banana plugs that go straight into my Amp.

Chord rumour speaker cable ordered 2x 4mtr runs with QED airlocks at one
end.

The cable will plug directly into the speakers wall mounted Dali
Mentor Menuets.

The cable will be embedded into the stud wall and then the airlock end
will plug into the Amp.

What is the best way to create an exit in the stud wall for the speaker
cable ? Is there a particular wall box ? I don't need a speaker wall
plate as there will be hardly any distance between the wall and
amplifier.

If the speakers are on the stud wall about 5ft up would this work ?

Our seating position for listening would be at the far end next to the

Would the sound clear over the top of the table ? Somehow I doubt it!

My plan have the table at the end nearest to the window, then 2 seats
can be positioned 7ft away from the speakers which will be the distance
between them. In this case the speakers will be mout about 4ft from the
floor.

For serious listening, you would need to put a covering over the table
(even a thick tablecloth would do... maybe with a thermal protector
blanket underneath)
Otherwise you are going to get a nice acoustic reflection from the
tabletop.

However, I suspect your wife's intention is to have the bare tabletop
exposed when not eating...

not all of it

This goes back to what I was saying earlier - imagine the tweeters are
torches - you want the beams of light pointing at your ears. How wide
the beam is - and so how much will stray onto the table - is down to
the design of the speakers.

please. Should the window wall be done too ?

What's behind the plasterboard? - really the cavity should be filled
with acoustic rockwool slabs or similar

In layman terms and within my budget are you saying using acoustic
boards will be better than 2x12mm boards with green glue in between ?

Behind the plasterboards will be some kingspan insulation I believe
having got plans and paperwork with me at work.

The insulation is sufficent to meet building regs/control.

Stop sound escaping or make your room sound good inside?

1st priority meeting building regs

2nd stop sound escaping (within budget) original plans submitted showed
2x12mm board green glue just on wall that connects to our kitchen.

Thinking of adding to the other walls but not in the storage area.

3rd Improve rooom acoustics within budget. I know sound boards, good
curtains, we're having carpet can be added.

Filling the cavity behind the plasterboard with fire-retardant rockwool
slab RWA45 like this:
http://www.greenglueshop.co.uk/products-page/acoustic-construction-products/rockwool-rwa45-acoustic-insulation-slabs-50mm/

complies with UK building regs. I thought that is what you were
planning?

It will also keep the room warmer :-)

Personally I would fill all walls - but the main focus would be any
wall(s) that connect to the body of the house.

Would I just need 1xsheet of 12mm normal plasterboard with this stuff ?

Phil any reason why the reviewers only give it 3* ?

Would this be needed on the wall connecting to the kitchen ?

Is it going to considerably reduce the width of the 8ft room ?

I'm no longer clear if we are talking about soundproofing as you would
do for a semi-pro/home studio or not.

In the past I have always used rockwool behind 2 layers of 12mm
plasterboard (one layer laid at 90 degrees to the other). If the
plasterboard is laid onto 2 inch studding there is no loss of depth in
the room - the wall is 3 inch depth in total over and above the
brickwork, the rockwool fits in the cavity that would be there anyway.
I have no idea about green glue - I have never used it/ don't know
what it is...

I have always treated all walls equally, becuase I wanted very good
soundproofing both from the studio to the house and vice versa And also
from the outside (traffic noise etc).

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Garage Conversion - Sound advice ?

2011-05-12 Thread tank121

OK now I'm home and I've got the plans.

Originally the plans were submitted and with the revisions by bulding
control it was as follows

- new stud wall between living area and storage. 75x50 sw stud wall
with Rockwool acoustic insulation --(as Phil suggested).

New front wall with windows - External skin 100 x50 studding
constructed 25-50mm from inside vapour barrier on the warm side of
insulation. Where the new cavity brickwork is installed a 85mm cavity
filled with Crown Dritherm and 13mm
dense plaster. -- Do I take it rockwool is not needed here then ?

On the other walls 25mm to be left between inside face of existing
single brickwork, then 100 x 75 sw studding with 75 mm kingspan between
studs, vapour barrier (1200 visqueen) then insulation backed
plasterboard 25mm.

-- Will the 75mm Rockwool rwa45 be an acceptable replacement for the
Kinspan? for building regs ? With 2 sheets of 12.5mm plasterboard (by
default are they insulation backed ?)

The connecting wall to the kitchen was 2 layers of 12.5m plasterboard
with green glue in between. 75 x50 sw studs at600mm nominal centres
with 75mm kingspan against 190mm turbo brickwork.
--- again do away with green glue and replace the kingspan with the
Rockwool ?

Floor - insulation 110mm of kingspan kool therm k3 or similar. Carpet
top layer

2011-05-12 Thread Phil Leigh

The Dritherm will behave similarly to Rockwool slab. The Kingspan is all
about thermal insulation but it will have some acoustic benefits too.

I think your plans are fine for what is after all still a normal room.

Which wall are the speakers being mounted on?
