Question: To what is your Transporter connected

- Preamp
- Poweramp

It's interesting to read others experiences with the transporter! I love
it, but it has me tweaking my ass off!

My experience is that the transporter needs some color. There are many
different ways of doing that. Tubes being the most obvious path. This
goes beyond and around the question of using or not using a preamp in
the signal. If one was to add a good tube pre I could see how that would
really work well. I have the t-amp sound in my system. Very good but
still tweaking caps. The sound is very precise but still a bit thin and
clinical. Much more fleshed out than my mosfet Perreaux (which is
considered as euphonic as most if any SS amps), but still a tad anemic.

I think the challenge with the transporter is with matching the right
analog leaning sound amplification/downstream reproduction to the mix.

It seems it would be simpler to take the preamp out of the variables
and go direct to a power amp. That way if it doesn't work you know what
is wrong. I personally feel that the newer class D amps are a good place
to start - Wyred4sound comes to mind!

Yes I have both types of the NHT passive controllers (balanced and
unbalanced versions), and have tried each with a Transporter and also
with an SB3 (SB Classic). These NHT passive volume controls are easily
the best passives I've ever tried to date, and I think this might also
be partly due to the excellent Jensen line-level input transformers
contained in them. I wish that I had discovered these little NHT
devices a long time ago, I find them to be *the* ideal match for the SB
and Transporter.

My experience is it's all about system synergy.

I have used my transporter plugged direct into my SAR Labs power amp
and it was excellent. However, direct into my Quicksilver power amps
wasn't a good result so I am running it into my preamp. It sounds
awesome as so.

I did connect my Transporter directly into a Primare 33.2 power amp
using balanced ouputs. At first I worried about overloading the Primare
input, since I did not use any attenuation. It turned out that the
Transporter was not able to drive the Primare no where near the maximum.
So, in my case I need a pre-amp. Secondly I realy feel a pre-amp is the
key element of making- or braking a system. Without pre-amp the sound is
just very 'correct'. With pre-amp (primare pre30) the system comes to
live.

Pulled the pre-amp out and max volume is fine through the P1's.

I will be testing some ATC SCM50A's in the near future but I am not
sure it is worth the cost to upgrade. Currenty the configuration is
outstanding in accuracy to the point that recordings I use to listen to
sound a bit dirty compared to better recordings. (just plain bad
engineering in the studio).

My impression so far is that the TP is everything I had hoped for and
more. 24/96 recordings through the TP are a great improvement over my
single disc transport at 16/44.

The next item to address is getting the 12v trigger to work for the
amps. I am looking at just taking the fast way out and going with the
Niles MSU250. This would let me use the IR off the TP to the Niles and
then connect to the 12V trigger.

Does anyone have a preference for controlling the TP? I use my iphone
when at home but my spouse wants to be able to see all the music and
make playlist etc without having to go to the server. I was thinking of
using RDP from a small laptop (with SSD drive and no fan) in the
listening room.

I have not looked at softsqueeze so I am open to ideas for an easy user
interface with full function and a readable size.

Thanks

Yes you can, but the gain staging might be sub-optimal. If when you
connect it up like this you find that at 100% volume setting on the TP
it's louder than you'd ever want, you should add some passive
attenuation.

Have a look at these wiki pages:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Connect_To_PowerAmp
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/BalancedPowerAmps
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/DIYPassiveAttenuation

Ozz;442251 Wrote:
Next question: are the IR connections just 12V trigger for the amps?
No. In their native form they send and receive IR codes to/from other
equipment (with assistance from the IR Blaster plugin).

If you want to get some kind of trigger signal to switch the power amps
on/off with the TP, they can easily be arranged that way, using Felix's
PowerSwitchII plugin
(http://www.gwendesign.com/slimserver/dev_hard_and_software.htm#powerswitchii).
What you get out of the IR socket using this plugin is a DC signal of
about 3.2V, not 12V. If your amps have a 12V trigger input, then you can
step it up using a transistor as described on Felix's page. Note that
this requires an external power supply.

However, what you say next changes things slightly...

Go for it. Passive ATCs? - you heretic! :-)

If you plan to get active ATCs, then (unless ATC have recently added a
DC triggering facility), you'll need to switch the mains power. The most
elegant way to do this is to use an opto-isolated triac (eg. MOC3020 or
similar) switching a power relay with a mains voltage AC coil. This
requires no external power supply (the mains power you're switching is
itself the power for the relay coil). You'll need to add a resistor
(about 75 ohms) to step the 3.2V down to about 1.2V, which is the
voltage needed to switch the opto-triac. (This same arrangement can of
course be used to switch the mains power to your Arcam monoblocks in the
meantime).

Hi Christian,

I had my TP connected directly to my Classé power amp via RCA cables.
Two days ago, I upgraded to XLR balanced cables (with a pair of Endler
attenuators with -16 dB attenuation) and I noticed a sound improvement
in term of spatialization and high frequencies definition. This just
finished convincing me about the benefits of a pre-amplifier free
configuration.

As your power amp has balanced input, it could be worth trying to
connect the TP with XLR cables. However, you'll probably need some
passive attenuation...

I agree with dealer issue in Sitzerland; I had the same problem a few
months ago before buying my system. Finally I took my TP to the dealer
to test it with different power amplifiers.

Same experience here, too, living in Zurich... Any dealer and equipment
recommendations?

Right now my TP is connected (balanced) to a Thule IA350 integrated amp
driving a pair of Focal Electra 1027 Be and Electra 1007 Be.
[IA350 is a virtual class a balanced stereo amp or a 5 channel amp,
depending on input selection...]

I would even abandon the rear speakers when connecting TP directly to a
poweramp for enhanced sound reproduction and reduced system complexity.

Very nice speakers... Personally I wanted a configuration based on BW
802d speakers. The only remaining questione were 1) which power
amplifier to associate with and 2)pre-amplifier or not?

I read a lot of forums and finally decided to test by myself. I took my
TP and asked the dealer to test it directly connected to a power amp. Of
course, he never heard about the TP and was very skeptical about a
Logitech gear connected to a 10k bucks amplifier. But quickly he (and I)
realized that the matching was just perfect, taking the best from the
speakers!

Finally and without any doubt, the configuration without pre-amplifier
just appeared to be THE Solution, providing the best sonic performances
for the smallest price (remember that a pre-amplifier is at least as
expensive as the power amplifier itself).

There's no discernable degradation in sound quality at any volume
setting on the TP. But the change in loudness pretty much overwhelms
most other audible measures of sound quality, so that's probably to be
expected. I can certainly say that there is no audible quantisation
noise at any volume setting.

Were I to remove the 13dB passive attenuators and compensate by
reducing the volume, there may very well be a noticable difference, but
doing a proper level-matched blind comparison of those two setups is
next to impossible, so I've never attempted it.

Ok, I've done quite a bit of listening today substituting my SCA2 with
Endler 12-step balanced attenuators. Bottom line is they sound equally
good to me, so my recommendation to anyone looking at a single-input
music setup is not to bother with a preamp, get/ make yourself some
decent attenuators and you're done (at a tiny fraction of the cost).

Thanks. That seems to confirm Clive B's view- i.e. no preamp is ideal,
but the SCA 2 is so good, it is unlikely to have any audible
'signature'.
I feel vindicated in adopting a minimalist approach.
I use Rothwell fixed attenuators and currently have only a single
source, which is the TP. I may add TV/DVD, but think I can get away with
using the TP for this, so shouldn't need a preamp..?
I have now replaced most albums with CDs,so it will be difficult to
justify the cost of an SCA2 ( with phono stage), and a respectable
turntable.
There's probably no going back now, even though it would be nice to
hear some of the old vinyl and find out if it really is 'better' than
CD.
The vinyl will probably stay in boxes for another 10 years. That's the
price of progress!

Vereina, did you also try the Transporter direct into ATCs?
I can understand why introducing the SCA2 may have resulted in
'better' sound than using the volume control in a CD player, but would
be interested in the difference when introducing SCA2 between TP and
Active ATCs.
Like Clive B, I also run TP direct into ATC 100s via XLR.
I was tempted to get a good quality preamp(eg SCA2, or even a
valve...), to allow me to play vinyl.
I decided it was cheaper to replace all my vinyl with CDs rather than
buy, even a second hand, SCA2!
This setup has the advantage of simplicity, and I know that Clive B is
an advocate, but I'd be interested in your experience, and also those of
egd.

Haven't used my Endlers for a long time. I'll bypass the SCA2 this
weekend and do some listening. Last time I did it there was nothing in
it so I settled for the convenience of a preamp. Doubt I'd notice any
real differences this time around, albeit I'm in a much better room now.

Agreed. Some people round here will know that I'm a bit of an
evangelist for the ditch the preamp message. But my rationale has
always been that it's because most preamps do have an audible
signature. The SCA2 is one of the few exceptions. (Of course, some
people might actually prefer whatever colourations their choice of
preamp introduces, and that's fine).

Preamp here, but it's also an SCA2 into SCM100SL AT's.

I run my TP directly into my power amp (Classé CA-2200). It is now
connected with unbalanced cables - and appropriate -20db attenuation -
but I will upgrade to XLR as soon as my Endler's attenuators arrive.

Anyway, I can only strongly recommend this setup, as long as you don't
need the analog source management capabilities of a pre-amp. The sound
is just amazing! And remember, the shortest the audio path is, the
better the sound will be!

It's not an answer to your question, but I can give you a perspective
that may be relevant.

For about eighteen months, I had my CD player (which has a good quality
volume control) directly connected to ATC active loudspeakers, using an
XLR balanced connection. This was a nice, minimalist setup and, so I
thought, sounded pretty good. However, when I purchased a Transporter
and decided to move my LP12 to this system, I obviously needed a
pre-amp, and was lucky enough to get a second-hand ATC SCA2. This was a
major improvement!

I can only conclude that the SCA2 is better (yes, better, not
different) at driving the ATC power amps. Perhaps the input and output
impedances are better matched? (They clearly should be a good match,
being manufactured by the same company ...) Perhaps the SCA2 is
easier for the CD player to drive? Perhaps the CD player's direct
output (without volume control) is better?

Clearly, there may be cases where no pre-amp is better but, in this
particular instance, the pre-amp was very definitely an improvement.

My TP is connected to my Pre-amp using the XLR Balanced outs. If I
didn't also use the system for other sources and Home Theater, I am sure
I would be directly connected. The reason I know is that I take the time
to do that on occasion. Transporter to 1.5M XLR to Ayre MX-R to
Vandersteen Quatro Speakers sounds very good. Hard to go wrong using the
minimum possible components!

I had thought about this, but then I read an interview with someone (who
I think was one of the original design people) state that the best sound
possible from TP is when it's at 0db. Could we mortals hear the
difference? Who knows .. ?
