Re: [BVARC] Volunteers Needed - Greater Houston HamFest
Mike, Any of us volunteering our time should not be required to buy entrance to Hamfest. I planned to do VE testing Saturday. Now I hear I have to also pay to walk the tables after driving all the way out there to volunteer our time? Thats messed up Buddy. And you know it is. And my complaint applies to ANY operators volunteering their time. You are not necessarily being asked to helpwith both setup and teardown. Someone will be there mostof the day tending to this and other pre-hamfest work; In addition to the 2 – 3hours for table setup, we need other volunteers for an hour or two at any timethroughout that day (Thursday). Re: [BVARC] Techniques for mitigating Lightning
A single bolt of lightning can contain up to one billion volts. And not even a full-fledged lightning protection system can divert 100% of that electricity safely into the ground. That is based upon a DIRECT strike, not a local strike in the area. But a connected antennae to your shack is a lightning magnet. Best recourse? Knowing upcoming storms are likey, simply disconnect your antenna from your shack until storm passes. No surge protection can guarantee complete strike protection. The speed of the surge can pass faster than a fuse can blow. Its that fast. NK5Q Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Wed, Oct 4, 2023 at 19:49, Robert Polinski via BVARC wrote: Buy some good quality surge protectors. Make sure they have a protected light on them. Tripp-Lite good brand. Most surge protectors use MOVs to absorb the surge. If hit, they can be destroyed and you will never know it. The protector will continue to pass power but offer no protection. Higher quality protectors will have a protected light on them, when the surge hits it will blow a fuse causing the light to go out indicating a surge damaged the MOV. You need to replace the surge protector when the protected light is out. Re: [BVARC] Techniques for mitigating Lightning
It is not expensive at all. I drove a big copper rod pretty deep into the clay just outside our home. If you are driving the rod into the ground (sledgehammer with cap over the end of the rod while hammering), close outside your shack, I would recommend copper braided ground strap into your shack. Solid copper ground strap is best, but expensive, and difficult to manipulate into your shack. But as prior commenter said, use at least #8 gauge copper wire. It only costs a few bucks more to move up bigger to #6 gauge. Just a thought. But I may be wrong. Any others wish to input on this? Re: [BVARC] AI
AI will soon eliminate college essay requirements just as electronic calculators eliminated the usage of my slide rule in high school. Sure, there are AI analysis programs out now to identify whether a college essay was written by AI, but the cat is out of the bag, because AI is evolving magnitudes faster by the day. It is self learning. And there is a dark side. AI can be set up with starting parameters to be biased. As in election and candidate articles. But none of that worries me more than AI becoming a terrorist weapon. Another threat most people are not aware of is the VAST array of simple jobs that will be eliminated. HR jobs will be first, but the list is endless. It is estimated that 30% of workforce will be taken out by AI...and that estimate is only for nowthink 5 yrs down the road. Kids these days better be considering "hands-on" jobs instead of college degrees if they want a sustainable income later in life. And they better look into the future as best as possible to identify hands-on jobs that will NOT be easily replaced by robotics. I spent 40 years programming robotics. It is evolving fast, and with addition of AI, expect robotic evolution to take a logarithmic increase. The world we live in now will be unrecognizable in 5 years. Did we not learn anything from the Terminator movie series? 73'sRod M.NK5Q Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Sat, Jul 29, 2023 at 19:08, K5BOU via BVARC wrote: The last example took 25 seconds. From emergency communication networks to exploring the farthest reaches of the radio spectrum, Ham radio is a unique, fulfilling, and exciting endeavor. A vital component of any amateur radio setup is the antenna, acting as the essential interface between the radio waves propagating in space and the electronic signals in the radio equipment. Ham radio antennas come in many forms and sizes, each having its own unique characteristics and usage scenarios. This essay delves into the world of Ham radio antennas, exploring their purpose, types, design, and application in the realm of amateur radio communications. Understanding Antennas in Amateur Radio At a fundamental level, a Ham radio antenna is a device that transforms electric currents into radio waves and vice versa. Antennas play an indispensable role in transmitting and receiving radio signals, effectively determining the efficiency of the communication process. They can be designed to have a broad range of coverage (omnidirectional antennas), or to focus the radio signals in a specific direction (directional or beam antennas), enhancing communication range and signal strength in the intended direction. Types of Ham Radio Antennas Dipole Antennas: Often referred to as the simplest type of antenna, a dipole consists of two metal conductors or rods, arranged end to end with the feed line (cable connecting the antenna to the radio equipment) connected in the middle. These are typically used at low to medium frequencies. Vertical Antennas: These are a type of omnidirectional antennas that radiate in all horizontal directions. The most common type is the quarter-wave vertical, where the length of the antenna is a quarter of the wavelength of the desired frequency. Yagi-Uda Antennas: Named after their Japanese inventors, Yagi-Uda or simply 'Yagi' antennas are directional antennas that focus their radiation pattern in one direction, enhancing gain and directivity. They are commonly used for communications at higher frequencies. Loop Antennas: These antennas form a loop as the conductor is shaped into a circle or a square. They can be used for both transmitting and receiving and are especially effective at lower frequencies. Design and Construction of Ham Radio Antennas Designing and constructing a Ham radio antenna is a process deeply rooted in the understanding of electromagnetism and radio wave propagation. The type, size, height, and orientation of the antenna are all significant parameters that affect its performance. While the fundamental principles remain constant, the design must also take into account the available space, materials, budget, and the specific frequencies the operator wishes to use. Impedance matching is another critical aspect of the antenna design. It involves making the impedance of the antenna match with the impedance of the transmitter or receiver, to ensure maximum power transfer. The use of tools such as antenna tuners and baluns is common in achieving this. Moreover, the successful implementation of a Ham radio antenna also involves safe and effective installation. As antennas are often installed outdoors, they must be securely mounted and properly grounded to withstand various weather conditions and avoid any

Its fairly straightforward. I've upgraded memory on all my laptops, and replaced keyboards, screen hinges, etc. I can walk you through the process. Before you start, lay down a towel, flip the laptop upside down on the towel, and remove the bottom screws. Please note: many laptops have different length screws on the underside. Try to pay attention to where each screw comes out. This will make re-assembly a breeze. Re: [BVARC] BVARC NEWS BLAST # 70 210725
So I have an issue here about tonight's Net Control management. He starts off the check-ins basically saying that if you don't have anything to contribute, don't bother checking in. Then later in the transmissions he basically said to one check-in that he didn't want "check-ins, and outs". BVARC Team, this is not right. Many people want to check in to register their monitoring of the net. Many of them just want to listen and LEARN. I had my General Class wife all set up to check in for the first time. After she heard that, she just went into the next room. She wants to drop her membership now. I don't think some board members will really care. I know one wont. Do you seriously think he will contribute in the future after that embarrassment? Re: [BVARC] FM
I have no experience with FM on CB. I run a "highly modified" President McKinley model CB with SSB for my 6 hour trips to the ranch and back. Say what you want about 27 Mhz, but it is somewhat valuable when stuck on I-10 not knowing why. Truckers on opposite side give constant reports of what they saw in passing. But again, I have no knowledge of CB FM. 73,RodNK5Q Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Sun, Aug 1, 2021 at 19:44, Robert Polinski via BVARC wrote: I see the FCC is going to allow FM on the CB band. Re: [BVARC] SUPER BARGAIN SALE FOR DRAKE L-7 AND MN-2700
I sent the following email to your email link listed below, but it came back undeliverable. So copy and pasting my response to you below on the group email: Bill, I have a spread of Drake tube type radios at my ranch about 6 hours west from here. Only thing I dint have to finish the collection is a Linear. I "think" I may have a tuner out there, but would gladly buy a backup if so. Its my SHTF radio setup. I am 62 years old and remember the old tube testers at the Lil General convenience stores! I have a full electronics workstation at home to build Raspberry Pi controlled devices, etc. Latest invention on the table is a camera shutter speed timing calculator using 4 laser beams driven by a Rasp Pi 4B. Writing code in Linux Python for it. So, yes, I can handle the Linear Cap maintenance or replacements. When may you be available for me to take it off your hands, and may I provide a check for it? If not I can go to the bank and get cash, Sir. 73, Rodney MartinezNK5Q5462 Loch Lomond DriveHouston 77096832-423-5640 cellSent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Thu, Jul 22, 2021 at 18:02, Bill Green via BVARC wrote: I HAVE A DRAKE L-7 KW LINEAR / P.S. Re: [BVARC] Police/Fire call listening on UHF/VHF
Ive been monitoring just the Southwest HPD dispatch during this whole storm window. We are not seeing it on TV, but burglaries and looting have been relentless since the water started going down. They are backed up at least a couple dozen calls this morning. Even the Valero's near Chimney Rock and North Braeswood has been looted, and it serves as sort of a staging area the police stay at regularly. I was told that even the Beldens grocery store got looted, but I have not verified this. Walked the area and saw they have barricaded the doors at Beldens with stacks of pallets, and a sign on front saying Armed Guard Inside. Dont even think that it is all peaceful out there. [BVARC] New Member to the club
I would like to announce my wife Tina Martinez as a new member of BVARC. She passed her Tech rating about 3 weeks ago. She has paid the club dues, and is now a member of the best radio club in Texas. Before studying for her Tech rating, she told me she would NOT go any further in Ham Radio. But after she aced the Tech test, it has somehow become a challenge to her now. She is at 60% in her General Class study, and will again be taking her next test from Franz Laugermann in about 2 weeks. I am sure if she aces that one too, she will try to show me up and ace the Extra Class just to look me in the eye and say "I told you So". But until then, I still have that Extra Class carrot hanging in front of herdaring her to catch up with me! Not bad for a CPA that never knew a volt from a watt. Now I cant shut her up. She is continually hitting me up with electrical formulae now. And I don't know a damn thing about accounting.Duh Best Regards,Rodney J. Re: [BVARC] Trash on our Amateur Radio reflector
BVARC Group, I only joined our club last month, so I have no right to tell anybody in the club how to post on the BVARC list. All I want to say is that my inbox has been getting hammered with email not really associated with our hobby since I joined, and please understand that I am not putting anybody down whatsoever right now. And yes, it is very simple to hit the delete link, but we have to read all these postings before realizing that they are unrelated to our hobby. The reason I joined the club was to meet people that could assist me in learning more about amateur radio, and to assist others with the same teachings as I increase my knowledge as well. When I get to know each of you, I would like to put a list together of those that would like to share emails that are outside of the hobby, and keep it between us as friends. If we did that, the rest of the group would not receive emails that they may not agree with, or have time to read. Again, I have no right to tell any of you how to moderate the group, and I understand that. This is just my experience so far, and how I am seeing it from my lens after a month in the club. I am taking the General Class test in 2 weeks. I would ask you to wish me luck, but I wont need it.
