RE: Any issues with Helm Control Panel?
Igotta say, I really like HELM. It's a really nice interface and apart from the recent upgrade bug (which didn't effect the server, just HELM) it's been rather swell. They have a lovely support forum as well, like Phil mentioned. Another thing Phil didn't mention, is that if you have sites on a static IP, and add a subdomain, that subdomain does not always get put on the right IP. Our setup we run mostly IP-less ... so creating sub domains is easy peezy ... but on the few we have static IPs on, whenever I create a sub, I have to go into IIS and adjust the host headers to reflect the proper static IP. No big deal if you have control of the server ... but I really don't know whether they got that fixed or what happens in the shared hosting environment ... Good luck Erika From: Michael Kear My hosting wholesaler wants us to switch from the gawd-awful Etrinix control panel for hosting to Helm, and while I realise nothing is perfect, are there any serious issues with Helm?Does anyone here use it either as wholesaler or reseller or site owner? How have you found it to be? RE: Hosting Solutions
I have a chime against uplinkearth ... Whilst their support might be good and I never had any problems with server uptime, their flexibility with customer issues is NOT. So just a small story to be aware in case it ever happens to anyone else ... We had a house robbery and all credit cards were stolen, one of which paid for the uplinkearth account. It was just a small test account, nothing mission critical, and only cost about $4.75 (approx.) a month. The timing of the robbery sucked, because two days later, the uplinkearth bill was due. We had NOTHING to pay it with as ALL cards were cancelled and we were awaiting replacements. The first replacements were not due until 1 day after their grace period of 5 days. So I figured, hey, no problem, I'll call them up and ask for a two day extension or whatever they would give so I could give them the new credit card number. This worked with our main dedicated host (www.handynetworks.com) with whom we have a bill of over $1000 a month. They were willing to wait. The uplinkearth bill was like $14.25 (billed quarterly). Uplinkearth customer service said NO. Just a flat out, NO we can't work with you, no sympathy for being robbed, just a flat out NO. I promptly cancelled the account of course. Sometimes crap happens, and I think a company should be able to work with special situations, especially when the amount was ludicrously low. They weren't even willing to listen. I think that sucks. But, that's just my experience. RE: 'Webinars'
The WebEx API contract is very expensive, true, especially since they switched to a per seat, PER MINUTE conference pricing plan. Gone are the days when you could leave a conference open to do testing on ;) BUT If anything goes wrong, you've got a whole support department to work with ... They work very hard to keep cross browser and cross OS compatible and their tech support people are great. I love the concept of using FlashComm and Breeze for smaller, non-critical conferences ... And I can't wait until we have time to explore that option even further ... But I am very comfortable with WebEx, relying on them to be there for the international pharmaceutical conferences we're a part of. Companies where uptime and NO technical glitches is of the utmost priority. The other plus at the moment with WebEx is brand recognition. I've heard of a few conference contracts that were only signed because the development company agreed to use WebEx. Placeware is another option. RE: Beta 3 is up! was: macromedia web site
I *really* enjoyed visiting the MM site this past week. It was indeed faster all over for me ... Even the exchange was faster to load. Maybe I'm just having a good week. ;) I still have HTML checked off for my version, and everything popped up nice and fast on my WinXP (Home) desktop and my WinXP (Pro) Laptop. It was even quick on the Mac and everything loaded fine on our Win2k machines. We are on a 1MB link, so I would expect everything to be somewhat speedybut it was definitely better than the first release. I still think you should drop the You may not have everything message off the top ... But what the heck. ;) The report was very interesting and made a good read, and it's papers like those that just might make some of the people that control the money purses, open them up a bit more. The more documentation and real-world examples we have, *that work*, the better to be able to sell skeptics a technology that they might raise an eyebrow to. Now if we can get some really good up-to-date comparisons of ASP/PHP apps versus ColdFusion apps, with ROI comparisons included (not putting those languages down, right tool for the job stuff is always adhered to) then from a marketing perspective, we could be heading to some great places. This all very nice of you Michael, and I have already received it from another kind person ... But it kinda misses some of the point I was trying to make. I love flash. It's pretty. RE: Macromedia DevCon 2002
I'd be willing to bet that if you notified MM when you registered with a list of the classes you were attending (which they would have anyway) that they might be able to work with you, ensuring maybe that you got a seat as close to the presenter as possible ... Making it easier to hear what they were saying? Does MM take requests like this into consideration? ALSO! I saw this product on the web somewhere where it was about the size of a handheld cassette recorder with ear phones, and when you put it on, and set the box on your lap or table or whatever, it amplified the sound around you ... RE: Naming Convention choice
I second this ... Just like we all hate people who type in caps all the time, reading code that's all uppercased make me feel like I have a hangover! The only thing we uppercase is our TABLE NAMES and FIELD NAMES, so they stick out when we're doing forms, which is almost all we ever do. sigh Though sometimes the SQL gets difficult to read, it's easier on the outputting side. | From: Dave Watts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] | | | The thing is, if you install IIS correctly, and disable the | stuff that you don't use, it's not a security patch | circus. By default, IIS includes a lot of features that | WebSite doesn't have, and that most people don't use | anyway. It's trivial to remove those unused features, and | those are the things which frequently cause IIS security problems. I have to be a Dave groupie, and agree ... In the past several years we've used IIS, we've never (gotta knock on wood here) had any security problems. We just ALWAYS make sure we uninstall all the silly extras, and just use the bits we absolutely have to have ... Then we run it through the security check tools, apply appropriate patches, and away we go. Works fine. Of course we like the other web servers out there as well, we just like to get along with all OS's. You never know when one will totally get knocked off it's feet and disappear. RE: MX training courses now available
I answered off-list, but just to throw my 2 cents worth in here as well, It is an awesome class. Adam and Dave are fantastic, they treat you like gold, and you get so much out of the class your brain is buzzing for months. Mine is still buzzing and it's almost a year later. I keep some of my notes from class by my side to this day. They give you so many great techniques and they push your abilities to the limit. It is definitely not for the 9-5'ers, as you do put in a full 10-12 hour day, but they make sure you have plenty of drink and snacks, and it NEVER gets boring. Even for the really advanced people I had in my class. They go way above and beyond their duties, and by the end of the week, not only will you feel like part of the family, but you'll be armed with so much sample code and techniques, you won't know where to run first. RE: [style] usernames
We have this discussion, all the time ... And we've come down to what we think is the best of both worlds ... We allow usernames that are people's email addresses. Yes, it's a double entry, but not everyone wants to use an email address as a username. I hate to. I much prefer to use weberika. I always remember it .. And it's rarely taken. (no wisenhimers now ;) ... ) However, if you want to use [EMAIL PROTECTED] to sign up to one of our websites, why go right ahead ... It's up to the user anyway to keep their info up to date. We very rarely allow people to change their usernames once they are chosen ... But will do if the customer requests this feature. As for username/password retrieval All we ask for is an email address. Easy enough ... Unless of course you forget your email address that you used and we've never had that problem yet (knock on wood). Either scenario still requires a DB check to ensure nobody enters duplicate info/correct data, etc ... it just comes down to personal style and business processes. Erika | -Original Message- | From: Bud [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] | | The one thing I like about using e-mail addresses is, if | people come | back to your site, and don't remember their username, many will | simply register again if it doesn't cost anything to | register and if | there is no information they need from a previous session. For | instance, my shopping cart. If I used a username, which I used to, | and they forget it, which they always do, they just enter their | billing info again. Since I use e-mail now, when they go to log in | they know their e-mail address. If they enter the wrong password I | just e-mail it to them. If they try to sign up again rather than | logging in, unless they've changed their e-mail address since their | initial purchase, I can catch it and send them to the login screen. | | I can never remember my username at places that take usernames | because buddy is ALWAYS taken. |-Original Message- |From: Andrew Tyrone [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] | |Are you using the cfabort tag by any chance, after you include |the form.cfm page again? OnRequestEnd.cfm not running
OK. This is weird. I thought OnRequestEnd runs every time a page is called, as long as there is a matching Application.cfm in the app Am I ok so far? I have a form page ... on submission goes to another .cfm page which does some error checking ... if errors are found, it sends the user back to the form cfinclude, and highlights the errors. When I first load the form page ... All the templates that are supposed to run, indeed do so. Including OnRequestEnd.cfm. If there is an error on the page though, and the user gets sent back to the form, the OnRequestEnd does not run, but Application.cfm does. Has anyone ever had this happen? Am I going nuts? RE: OnRequestEnd.cfm not running
Thanks for the posts, and to answer some of the q's ... My OnRequestEnd.cfm resides in the same folder as my Application.cfm, spelled exactly that way even though the site runs on IIS 5 on a Win 2K box .. I like to watch file case in the off-chance the app ever gets moved to a Unix box. The Application and OnRequestEnd reside in the outermost folder of the app, and I only go about two folders deep at any time. This works perfectly at moment ... I also have a cfapplication designated in Application.cfm. I have a form.cfm page and a formSubmit.cfm page. These sit one folder down. When you go to form.cfm, OnRequestEnd runs fine. When you submit the form.cfm, and formSubmit.cfm checks for data validity ... phone number digits, blank fields, email validity, that kind of error. If there is something wrong, I send them back to the form.cfm via a cfinclude NOT a cflocation ... so that's not the problem. It only happens in this situation. I gues a quick fix would be to cfinclude the OnRequestEnd after the original include if there's an error, but it just seems to me that this is wrong, as Application runs again, why doesn't OnRequestEnd? RE: Processor Spike
This is likely not your issue at all, but something to look out for nonetheless We recently installed a new server as well with Win2k and CF4.5, a configuration that had been working on the old server very well. The only thing we didn't have running on the new server was an mail service (Exchange), which we were to install after we checked everything else. (very low volume web server - otherwise we wouldn't put it all on one. It only gets MAYBE 50 different people hitting it every other day, and that's a lot.) AnywayAll of our apps utilize CFMAIL. We ran one which triggered an email, and I thought nothing of it because it should just sit in the spool folder and/or quit. HAHAHAHA After several frustrating attempts (including several reboots) to figure out why all of a sudden the CPU was pegged at 100% and the computer barely working, I went into the mail spool folder, deleted that message waiting to send...and VOILA! Server was back to normal. (I don't even know why it occurred to me to check that.) Why it grabbed onto the one little file and was so dedicated to getting it sent is beyond me, but now, when I test apps that have CFMAIL tags that run, and I'm not hooked up to send, I know I have to go delete that file. SO..I was thinking maybe you have a CFMAIL tag working and they aren't getting out? Anybody else ever have this happen? RE: Lock me up!
That was one of the best rundowns on CFLOCK I've been privy to! Thank you for the great insight! I've always been a bit mystified when it come to setting the proper timeouts. Depends on what you're locking! If you're locking application variables, you're probably best to go for 1 or two seconds. If you're locking access to a file, which might be locked for a lengthy writing process, go for something longer. In general, I go for one or two second timeouts with throwonerror=yes, then I can catch the error and display something meaningful to the client, rather than have them wait for ages thinking the server is down. 2. See 1. above ! 3. In this situation, I'd go for this - cfset Variables = StructNew() cftry cflock scope=APPLICATION timeout=2 throwonerror=YES cfset VARIABLES.CatName = APPLICATION.cats[url.catid].catNAME cfset VARIABLES.SubCats = APPLICATION.SubCats /cflock cfcatch type=ANY !--- Display a message --- cfexit method=EXITTEMPLATE /cfcatch /cftry cfoutput #VARIABLES.CatName# !--- Your PURE HTML --- cfloop index=i from=1 to=#ArrayLen(VARIABLES.subcats)# !--- More pure HTML --- /cfloop /cfoutput That way you only lock for the minimum amount of time/code, which is always good practice. If you cache your APPLICATION variables into a local struct, you only need to lock the bit that copies the values, and you're free to read and write to the local struct as much as you like. FW: CF Scalability and MacroMedia - Searching for the OFFICIAL Wo rd
For those of you who may have been following the Scalability thread, and aren't a part of the partners list, I felt compelled to share this statement from Phil Costa at Macromedia on the CF Scalability issue. Erika (with a *K*) Don't hurry, don't worry. You're only here for a short visit. So be sure to stop and smell the flowers. - Walter C. Hagen -Original Message- From: Phil Costa [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, May 18, 2001 12:35 PM To: CF-partners Subject: RE: CF Scalability and MacroMedia - Searching for the OFFICIAL Wo rd I do work for Macromedia, and can certainly vouch for the performance of ColdFusion, which is one of the reasons Half.com uses it. In addition to Half.com, there are dozens of other large-scale Web sites that use ColdFusion, including Autobytel and SmartMoney.com. For a more objective perspective on performance, there is an extensive performance brief on the Allaire Members Only Web site (accessible to all partners) that provides benchmarks for ColdFusion 4.5. These are also being updated for ColdFusion 5, which provides dramatically improved performance across all platforms. As to the comment in the article from PC Magazine, the quotation was paraphrased and taken out of context, which is unfortunate. We strongly believe that ColdFusion is a very effective development platform for high-volume, business-critical Web applications. It's proven itself again and again in this arena. I tried to make the point that ColdFusion can work well in a multi-tier environment, and if you want to use other languages to implement part of your application, ColdFusion offers you that flexibility. Unfortunately that point was lost. We're committed to building a positive public image for ColdFusion, and we're going to keep working this issue. Thanks for your comments. As always, we are dedicated to working harder with ColdFusion. I'm glad this mailing list has been set up, as it offers a very good forum for partners like those in this thread to offer comments and feedback. CF Server Pro does not scale, how ever CF Server Enterprise (the key bit being _Enterprise_) does scale and has been able to scale as long as I can remember (about 6-7 years now). As standard CF Ent 4.x is supplied with ClusterCats, which is software server clustering/ip failover, and has the ability to be set up on multiple servers eg. WebServer -- CF Server -- Database (a very simple example) using the CFRemote.ini and CFDist.ini (Have a look at the CF documentation) It is very easy to make a CF application that does not scale, but with planning (something sadly lacking in the web industry) and good coding practices, you can build applications like ebags.com, which was one of the first very large fusebox website and still is running CF and code written using the Fusebox methodology. CF5 actually goes a step further. As it has enhanced application monitoring features, which include customised agents to monitor applications, integration with enterprise management systems vis snmp and Agent based hardware load balancing integration. CF5 will be supported on windows 9x,nt,2000 (with much improved memory management and other win2k specific improvements), Solaris 2.6/7/8, HPUX II, Linux Redhat and additionally Linux SuSE and Cobalt. I could go on quoting the information that was given to the CFUG Managers, but I hope that this was sufficient to get you started. I think I may have asked this before, but I can't find it on the list, so here we go again... I like the Allaire Alive format. Using Flash to deliver a tutorial or presentation and having the ability to give the user a test on the topic or short survey. Fits one of my client's needs perfectly! Does it have to be on a streaming server? Or does it not have anything to do with streaming? Any info at all is much appreciated! Thanks for your time! OT: Data Integrity - Q of the Day
Here's a question that's been bothersome for some time. We have an interface where participants register for meeting. There is a form they fill out with basic information, including the pharmaceutical company they are associated with. We use drop downs where we can to keep data as constant as possible, but we cannot use dropdowns for the company they are with as there are far too many to compile and list. And therein lies our problem. Users from one company can have a half dozen different ways to spell their company name. There is an admin search page where an administrator can search for registered users by several different criteria, one of which is the user's company name. I dynamically build a drop down for this field on the search page by pulling all distinct company names from the db. Of course, there are several different variations of the company name in the dropdown, which makes it very cumbersome. Has anyone had to deal with this? If so, how did you deal with it? And/or does someone have an idea on how to go about dealing with it? Erika (with a *K*) ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. SECURITY CHECKS
Speaking of security and how to go about fixing here, here is some excellent advice from people on the lists.a compilation from my posts last week. -- You're not going to like what I have to say, I don't think. If your server has been compromised, you can't fix it by simply taking it offline and installing patches. Anything on the server could very well have been compromised. Ideally, you should wipe the disks, reinstall the OS and everything else, and restore your application files from a trusted backup. Otherwise, you can't be sure that other back doors haven't been set up on the box. During the reinstall process, you might want to take a look at the following resources, in addition to everything else that's been suggested: Securing Windows NT/2000 Servers for the Internet, Stefan Norberg, O'Reilly. This is a very good explanation of securing IIS web servers, and contains good step-by-step instructions. Hardening Windows 2000 Guide, available as a PDF download: http://www.systemexperts.com/win2k/HardenWin2K.html Windows NT Security Guidelines, written by Trusted Systems for NSA, available as a download: http://www.trustedsystems.com/tss_nsa_guide.htm This doesn't have too much to do with web services specifically, but provides a clear description of basic use of ACLs, which is essential for securing your web server. Dave Watts [[EMAIL PROTECTED]] - I do a security scan of my system every now and again using whisker from RFP (http://www.wiretrip.net/rfp/2/index.asp). I suggest everyone either do the same or ask someone you trust to do it for you. It takes little time to do and the rewards could be massive (especially with the supposed cyberwar coming). Also, run a few searches over your code for things like CFFILE, CFINCLUDE and other tags that can be used as attack points. A few hours of code review could save days in code rebuild. As for how he got in, check all the logs on the box. Look for file gaps to see if he hacked them to cover his trail. If there are none, then look for things out of thr ordinary like .dll, .htx or other calls. Between the system logs, web logs, CF logs and whatever you may find his attack route. OT but VIQ: Denial of Service Attacks
A client of mine got hacked over the weekend. The hacker was PoisonBOx or someone posing as PoisonBOx. They only infected default.asp, index.asp and default.htm, index.htm pages. Thankfully, on this particular box, we don't use any of them. Obviously there are vulnerabilities lurking around in IIS4/SP6 that need to be addressed and the client is now in the process of making sure each and every patch/hot fix that exists is in place and that permissions are set up as they should be. My question is, has anybody else been affected by this particular hacker, and if so, did you ever find out how exactly they got in?
