RE: FCKEditor and IE7

2008-05-19 Thread Erika L. Walker
Just an FYI in case many of you didn't know, but ActivEdit, the "other"
WYSIWYG editor for web pages, is now open source and available for download
at the creator's website: http://www.zrinity.com/activedit

Just an alternative solution for those who haven't invested a lot of time
into FCKEditor.

Thank you,
Erika

BUT ... your continue shopping button is not really usable ... you use a
_javascript_ GoBack ... and when I pushed it the first itme, I looked at
my cart in the upper right hand corner and it said $0. I was like "Wha?"
then I refreshed, and there it was.

You should likely pass along either the last item they were looking at
and get them back to a new view of that page, or send them back to the
front of the site .. this will at least refresh the page they were on,
and update the status of their cart immediately.

Beautiful site ... and I like your shopping cart layout.

I prefer the method you've used because it satisfies

1) my need to see an OBVIOUS action and
2) I prefer to see an immediate listing of my items in a cart. All
nicely lined up and totalled

RE: Any issues with Helm Control Panel?

2004-03-10 Thread Erika L Walker-Arnold
I  gotta say, I really like HELM.
It's a really nice interface and apart from the recent upgrade bug
(which didn't effect the server, just HELM) it's been rather swell.

They have a lovely support forum as well, like Phil mentioned.

Another thing Phil didn't mention, is that if you have sites on a static
IP, and add a subdomain, that subdomain does not always get put on the
right IP.
Our setup we run mostly IP-less ... so creating sub domains is easy
peezy ... but on the few we have static IPs on, whenever I create a sub,
I have to go into IIS and adjust the host headers to reflect the proper
static IP.

No big deal if you have control of the server ... but I really don't
know whether they got that fixed or what happens in the shared hosting
environment ...

Good luck

RE: Hosting Solutions

2003-08-30 Thread Erika L. Walker-Arnold
I have a chime against uplinkearth ... Whilst their support might be
good and I never had any problems with server uptime, their flexibility
with customer issues is NOT.

So just a small story to be aware in case it ever happens to anyone else
...

We had a house robbery and all credit cards were stolen, one of which
paid for the uplinkearth account. It was just a small test account,
nothing mission critical, and only cost about $4.75 (approx.) a month.
The timing of the robbery sucked, because two days later, the
uplinkearth bill was due.

We had NOTHING to pay it with as ALL cards were cancelled and we were
awaiting replacements. The first replacements were not due until 1 day
after their grace period of 5 days. So I figured, hey, no problem, I'll
call them up and ask for a two day extension or whatever they would give
so I could give them the new credit card number.

This worked with our main dedicated host (www.handynetworks.com) with
whom we have a bill of over $1000 a month. They were willing to wait.

The uplinkearth bill was like $14.25 (billed quarterly). Uplinkearth
customer service said NO. Just a flat out, NO we can't work with you, no
sympathy for being robbed, just a flat out NO. I promptly cancelled the
account of course.

Sometimes crap happens, and I think a company should be able to work
with special situations, especially when the amount was ludicrously low.
They weren't even willing to listen. I think that sucks.

But, that's just my experience.

Cheers,
Erika

RE: 'Webinars'

2003-07-10 Thread Erika L Walker-Arnold
The WebEx API contract is very expensive, true, especially since they
switched to a per seat, PER MINUTE conference pricing plan.

Gone are the days when you could leave a conference open to do testing
on ;)

BUT If anything goes wrong, you've got a whole support department
to work with ... They work very hard to keep cross browser and cross OS
compatible and their tech support people are great.

I love the concept of using FlashComm and Breeze for smaller,
non-critical conferences ... And I can't wait until we have time to
explore that option even further ...
But I am very comfortable with WebEx, relying on them to be there for
the international pharmaceutical conferences we're a part of.
Companies where uptime and NO technical glitches is of the utmost
priority.

The other plus at the moment with WebEx is brand recognition. I've heard
of a few conference contracts that were only signed because the
development company agreed to use WebEx.

Placeware is another option.

Cheers,
Erika

RE: Beta 3 is up! was: macromedia web site

2003-04-05 Thread Erika L. Walker-Arnold
I *really* enjoyed visiting the MM site this past week. It was indeed
faster all over for me ... Even the exchange was faster to load. Maybe
I'm just having a good week. ;)

I still have HTML checked off for my version, and everything popped up
nice and fast on my WinXP (Home) desktop and my WinXP (Pro) Laptop.

It was even quick on the Mac and everything loaded fine on our Win2k
machines. We are on a 1MB link, so I would expect everything to be
somewhat speedybut it was definitely better than the first release.

I still think you should drop the "You may not have everything "
message off the top ... But what the heck. ;)

The report was very interesting and made a good read, and it's papers
like those that just might make some of the people that control the
money purses, open them up a bit more. The more documentation and
real-world examples we have, *that work*, the better to be able to sell
skeptics a technology that they might raise an eyebrow to.

Now if we can get some really good up-to-date comparisons of ASP/PHP
apps versus ColdFusion apps, with ROI comparisons included (not putting
those languages down, "right tool for the job stuff is always adhered
to") then from a marketing perspective, we could be heading to some
great places.

Thanks Macromedia!

This all very nice of you Michael, and I have already received it
from

another kind person ...

But it kinda misses some of the point I was trying to make.

I love flash. It's pretty. It makes websites really cool.

HOWEVER

I shouldn't have to use it to download an updater to a piece of
software

we all pay very good money for.

That's all.

Been doing a lot of trial by fire testing of CFMX installs lately
(win2k

and Linux - installing by command line) and forgive me if I come off
a

bit touchy. I happen to love CF and make a living by it, but darn if

Just asking because I'd like to order it but I want to make sure I order

Thanks.

OT: CF Hosting

2002-09-07 Thread Erika L. Walker-Arnold

I'm loathe to bring this up for the zillionth time ... But I need
opinions. A client wants to know about hosting a couple of sites with
this outfit:
http://www.hostica.com/products.html ...
Does anyone know anything about them?
Opinions?

I don't need a referral to another host, we have plenty of others to
choose from, I always follow those threads on here ... But this is the
first time I've heard of this one. A search of the archives on HOF
didn't bring anything up.

Thanks,

Erika

RE: Macromedia DevCon 2002

2002-07-10 Thread Erika L. Walker

I'd be willing to bet that if you notified MM when you registered with a
list of the classes you were attending (which they would have anyway)
that they might be able to work with you, ensuring maybe that you got a
seat as close to the presenter as possible ... Making it easier to hear
what they were saying?

Does MM take requests like this into consideration?

ALSO! I saw this product on the web somewhere where it was about the
size of a handheld cassette recorder with ear phones, and when you put
it on, and set the box on your lap or table or whatever, it amplified
the sound around you ... Maybe that would help in this situation?
(http://www.spyhear.com/) :) Found the url.

Anyways, you should definitely come. Looking forward to this year's
line-up of sessions.

RE: Naming Convention choice

2002-07-05 Thread Erika L. Walker

I second this ... Just like we all hate people who type in caps all the
time, reading code that's all uppercased make me feel like I have a
hangover! The only thing we uppercase is our TABLE NAMES and FIELD
NAMES, so they stick out when we're doing forms, which is almost all we
ever do. Though sometimes the SQL gets difficult to read, it's
easier on the outputting side.

It all really comes down to who prefers pink and who prefers blue
though.

I like brown. ;)

RE: Macromedia / Allaire IDEs

Talk about jumping into the fire

If you search the archives for DWMX, Dreamweaver or Studio or Homesite
... You'll find lots of interesting discussions ... As it's been hashed
to bits here already ... Otherwise, head over to www.macromedia.com and
check out the new line forums there ...

I use CF Studio 5 with the updater available from the MM site ... (don't
have url handy). Works fine. Though I really gave DWMX a thorough chance
.. It's just a little too slow right now.

Welcome back to CF.

RE: DevCon 2002 info

2002-07-03 Thread Erika L. Walker

I stayed at a Marriott down the street, and while obviously, it's not on
the same grounds ... They had DSL access...which is why I chose to stay
at the Marriot. I also had a suite that slept 6 for $99 a night. You
can't beat that. Yeah, you have to use a shuttle or rent a car to get
back and forth ... But I thought it was well worth it.

This year, I might try and try at the Swan and Dolphin ... But a suite
w/DSL versus a box with a bed ... It's a tough decision.

WOW! Someone else that does this.

I always use the a two letter abbreviation of the table name for the
beginning of every field in said table. This is SO helpful when doing
complex joins.

My typical convention is:

(For example only)

GUESTBOOK

GB_ID
GBFIRSTNAME
GBLASTNAME
GBEMAIL
GBCOMMENTS
GBDATEADDED

I use all caps because I camelback or lowercase all other variables, and
when I run across DB variables in forms and other bits of code, I'll
know immediately those vars are coming from the database, and not
something local, though most everything is scoped.

I have to be a Dave groupie, and agree ... In the past several years
we've used IIS, we've never (gotta knock on wood here) had any security
problems. We just ALWAYS make sure we uninstall all the silly extras,
and just use the bits we absolutely have to have ... Then we run it
through the security check tools, apply appropriate patches, and away we
go.

Works fine. Of course we like the other web servers out there as well,
we just like to get along with all OS's. You never know when one will
totally get knocked off it's feet and disappear. Always be ready for
anything.

2002-06-06 Thread Erika L Walker-Arnold

YES! Go! Well worth the time. Went last year, thought we we're going
this year, but deadlines are getting in the way ... Quality subject
matter, quality speakers, and Michael Smith and his crew do a super job
organizing it all.

So please go, and tell everyone I said hi!

RE: dw mx chopping code?

2002-06-03 Thread Erika L Walker-Arnold

One thing I noticed is do not let it update your links Like when
you make a change to a page Name or you delete a file ... If you have
any query strings attached to the file name, it will chop them off.

I haven't noticed anything else, but I never touch design mode ... Are
you using that feature?

RE: MX training courses now available

2002-05-30 Thread Erika L Walker-Arnold

I answered off-list, but just to throw my 2 cents worth in here as well,

It is an awesome class. Adam and Dave are fantastic, they treat you like
gold, and you get so much out of the class your brain is buzzing for
months. Mine is still buzzing and it's almost a year later. I keep some
of my notes from class by my side to this day. They give you so many
great techniques and they push your abilities to the limit.

It is definitely not for the 9-5'ers, as you do put in a full 10-12 hour
day, but they make sure you have plenty of drink and snacks, and it
NEVER gets boring. Even for the "really" advanced people I had in my
class.

They go way above and beyond their duties, and by the end of the week,
not only will you feel like part of the family, but you'll be armed with
so much sample code and techniques, you won't know where to run first.

A must do if you are looking for a great training class.

RE: [style] usernames

2002-05-27 Thread Erika L Walker-Arnold

We have this discussion, all the time ... And we've come down to what we
think is the best of both worlds ...

We allow usernames that are people's email addresses. Yes, it's a double
entry, but not everyone wants to use an email address as a username. I
hate to. I much prefer to use weberika. I always remember it .. And it's
rarely taken. (no wisenhimers now ;) ... )

However, if you want to use [EMAIL PROTECTED] to sign up to one of
our websites, why go right ahead ... It's up to the user anyway to keep
their info up to date.

We very rarely allow people to change their usernames once they are
chosen ... But will do if the customer requests this feature.

As for username/password retrieval All we ask for is an email
address. Easy enough ... Unless of course you forget your email address
that you used and we've never had that problem yet (knock on wood).

Either scenario still requires a DB check to ensure nobody enters
duplicate info/correct data, etc ... it just comes down to personal
style and business processes.

RE: damn Netscape 4.x!

Sample code?

It could be one tiny little forgotten tag .. Or something not closed

One of the useful things about DWMX, .. Is when I open code up in it ...
If any of the tags are not nested correctly .. Or not closed properly
.. It highlights it. Found quite a few errors like this that I didn't

RE: Custom warning this page has expired page?

2002-05-21 Thread Erika L Walker-Arnold

I was playing with this and hubby brought up a good point ... Changing
the registry key to point to a new doc is cool, if you are viewing the
web page from that machine ... It's not the server that feeds the page,
it's the end user's browser.

Would this be an issue in your search for customizing the expired paged?

Or is this wrong?

OT or not OT: Voxeo and ColdFusion

Anybody here do anything with Voxeo and ColdFusion?

If so, are there any pitfalls to avoid?

Thanks in advance
Going through the developer's stuff on the site and it's pretty
straightforward, I'm just doing some research. Joined the newsgroup, but

>>| Oh, and the Drag and Drop of images is also there - as long

Neal, I'm sorry, but that's useless to us "hand-coders". Absolutely
useless. That drag and drop of images into your code was an excellent
feature...adding in the height and width of said image as well,
automatically.

I get it now though. Us die-hard "hand-coders" aren't expected to use
DWMX. We have Homesite+. Apparently. And we get to keep using CFStudio.

OR we can use both side by side, which I can't until I upgrade my RAM,
because my computer can't handle Outlook, CFStudio, DWMX and 2-10
Browser windows open all at once, even with 256MB RAM!

It's ok. I am sad but I'll get over it. I liked it while it lasted. I'll
still upgrade though. Use it just for web services and CFC's until
someone comes out with an add-on for CFStudio for those things ... It's
only time.

And don't get me wrong, it really is a fantstic product on it's own. I
really do like a lot of the features ... I don't feel like some of these
complaints are unjustified. We work with this stuff day in and day out.
They are just our opinions, and as a company, MM can take it all in and
make decisions and in the end, progams get changed or they don't and
we'll all just have to learn to live with it. Though I do speak for
myself.

RE: Macromedia Folks: What are you thinking?

2002-05-07 Thread Erika L Walker-Arnold

Vernon,

I really like it. But I think it will be the next version that I really
love. I've been using it exclusively since the release, because I WANT
to use it. The small demo Jeremy gave at a recent meeting was great. I
want to use if for CFC's and web services and all the great new tools. I
am chomping at the bit to be able to ONLY use this product.

BUT ... I was finally forced to go back to studio yesterday (after 8
days without using it), because DWMX was taking soo long to update
and switch between views, it was killing me. I'd finally had enough.

I would post this to the wish form, but it's a long rant, and I'd rather
you read it here ... And hopefully someday you'll get all that flesh
back!

This whole RDS/FTP, define a site first, saving down a local copy, is a
pain. I use RDS/FTP religiously, every day, but I also develop/test on a
test server and deploy on a production serverand being able to jump
around at will was a time saver. Yeah, you had to set up the RDS/FTP
connections but not like we have to do in DWMX. But I'll get used to it,
and find a work around, and maybe in the next version, you guys will
make behave differently.

A couple other REALLY bad things. DWMX is a HUGE memory hog. Why does it
have to use 50 MB RAM just to sit there? Anybody else get this? Also,
the refresh when you Alt-Tab is a pain. I still can't find where to turn
this off.

There's a delay between the database tab and the code when you are
dragging and dropping field and table names. Why?

And be careful if you rename a file in the file list ... DW wants to
know if it should update the links throughout your site...this would be
an incredible feature if it didn't take away any url variables you had
attached to the reference of the page inside the code of any of your
templates.

Oh, and I'm still having that issue with long file names, but I know my
way around it, so I ignore the DW popup box.

But Vernon, I like it!!! I really do! I think most of do ... It's just
we are so used to Studio/Homesite, and we want what we want, so I may be
behaving like a spoiled child when I rant ... But it's just my honest
opinion.

I'll still use DWMX, can't wait for the official FULL release ...
Because I'm already spoiled by the file view, and the asset view, and
the way I can have the databases open with the files.

I just need to upgrade my RAM I guess .... Already at 256. :)

If you look under the folders for your "defined" site, you'll see the

I have the CFIDE folder setup on the remote server with limited
permissions ...so I need to login twice, once with Windows
authentication, then with RDS authentication ... With Studio, this is
fine, I get the prompt box for my Win password, then RDS kicks in ...

Doesn't seem as if DWMX can handle this, unless I'm missing something
somewhere?

Oof. Doing another pull every 5 - 10 minutes? To keep the data fresh? I
think they refresh every 5 minutes.

Although I would pull it it, store in a db, then feed the page fom the
db, keeping maybe the last ten pulls, just in case on a refresh, their
site is down. (Which happens to moreover every once in a while) ...
You'd have to adjust your schedule to inbetween their schedule, so you
synchronize correctly.

What about the shortcut's? Like Ctrl 3 for surrounding a variable with

I went into Keyboard shortcut's, but couldn't figure out how to add it

RE: CFStudio > DWMX hiccups

2002-04-30 Thread Erika L Walker-Arnold

Here's a BAD hiccup.

I have a file name that's pretty long (26 characters). Not hugely long,
but apparently longer than Dreamweaver wants it. It was ok, until I
clicked on the actual file on the left to copy the name of it to use in
my code, then when I clicked off it, it kept telling me the name was too
long in a popup, I don't want to change it. I alt-tabbed to switch to
Outlook to write this post, I just switched back to count the letters,
and Dreamweaver let go of the file. I clicked back on the file, then
tried to click off again, same message.

This is unacceptableworkarounds? Anybody else get this?

RE: OnRequestEnd.cfm not running

2002-01-16 Thread Erika L Walker-Arnold

Thanks for the posts, and to answer some of the q's ...

My OnRequestEnd.cfm resides in the same folder as my Application.cfm,
spelled exactly that way even though the site runs on IIS 5 on a Win 2K box
.. I like to watch file case in the off-chance the app ever gets moved to a
Unix box.

The Application and OnRequestEnd reside in the outermost folder of the app,
and I only go about two folders deep at any time. This works perfectly at
moment ... I also have a designated in Application.cfm.

I have a form.cfm page and a formSubmit.cfm page. These sit one folder down.
When you go to form.cfm, OnRequestEnd runs fine. When you submit the
form.cfm, and formSubmit.cfm checks for data validity ... phone number
digits, blank fields, email validity, that kind of error. If there is
something wrong, I send them back to the form.cfm via a cfinclude NOT a
cflocation ... so that's not the problem.

It only happens in this situation. I gues a quick fix would be to cfinclude
the OnRequestEnd after the original include if there's an error, but it just
seems to me that this is wrong, as Application runs again, why doesn't
OnRequestEnd?

Any further ideas? Thanks muchly!

OnRequestEnd.cfm not running

2002-01-16 Thread Erika L Walker-Arnold

OK. This is weird.

I thought OnRequestEnd runs every time a page is called, as long as there is
a matching Application.cfm in the app

Am I ok so far?

I have a form page ... on submission goes to another .cfm page which does
some error checking ... if errors are found, it sends the user back to the
form , and highlights the errors.

When I first load the form page ... All the templates that are supposed to
run, indeed do so. Including OnRequestEnd.cfm. If there is an error on the
page though, and the user gets sent back to the form, the OnRequestEnd does
not run, but Application.cfm does.

Has anyone ever had this happen? Am I going nuts? Did I do something wrong?

AllaireMIB Error

2002-01-10 Thread Erika L Walker-Arnold

Have any of you guys run across this in your event logs on a Win2k Server
running CF 5 ...

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Allaire AllaireMIB
Event Category: None
Event ID: 3
Date: 11/26/2001
Time: 2:36:58 PM
User: N/A
Computer:
Description:
Failure to connect to url:
http:///cfide/mib/getmetricdataXML.cfm.

I also get one for
Failure to connect to url: http:///cfide/mib/serverinfo.cfm.

Then these errors are followed by:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Allaire AllaireMIB
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7
Date: 1/9/2002
Time: 2:46:00 PM
User: N/A
Computer:

Description:
A server abnormal state trap has been generated. The server (
[]) state is 2.
-
I found this in the knowledgebase:

"When using IIS security, enabling the MIB agent to work properly requires
anonymous file access be given to getmetricdataXML.cfm and serverinfo.cfm.
These files are located in the \cfide\mib\ directory."

And I followed its advice, but I still get the errors in the event log.

Puzzled as to what to do with it and prevent it from happening.

Any clues?

A New CF-Community Site!

2001-09-17 Thread Erika L. Walker

House of Fusion and RUWebby.com are happy to present a new CF-Community
site! CF-Community.com (http://www.cf-community.com) will talk about all
things community-related, and be your fun portal and guide to the CF world,
whether it's code related or off-topic. Preferably OT!

We're starting with the biggest community event coming up -- the CF
Community Suite, taking place during and alongside the Macromedia Conference
in Orlando. Register now and participate in the different events and things
we've got planned.

And of course, there's the raffle that will get you a chance to win a
one-year subscription to the House of Fusion Tech Digest as well as other
great prizes! This new service, an edited, redacted, digest of all pertinent
Tech posts for CF-Talk and the other Tech lists, normally will be a paid
subscription. But you will have a chance to win a free subscription, once
each day of the conference, only at the Community Suite.

The best thing is, all proceeds go to help victims of the World Trade Center
attacks, or to Byteback, a non-profit organization that helps train the
underpriviliged in Web development in Washington, D.C. So you get a chance
to help and to win this great new digest!

Check us out, http://www.cf-community.com, and we'll see you at the suite!
---

Please be warned, we are brand new ... and as most all new sites, I'm sure
there will be growing pains. Please report any and all glitches to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and we will do our best to get them corrected
as soon as possible. Thank you.

RE: Processor Spike

2001-07-04 Thread Erika L. Walker

This is likely not your issue at all, but something to look out for
nonetheless

We recently installed a new server as well with Win2k and CF4.5, a
configuration that had been working on the old server very well. The only
thing we didn't have running on the new server was an mail service
(Exchange), which we were to install after we checked everything else. (very
low volume web server - otherwise we wouldn't put it all on one. It only
gets MAYBE 50 different people hitting it every other day, and that's a
lot.)

AnywayAll of our apps utilize CFMAIL. We ran one which triggered an
email, and I thought nothing of it because it should just sit in the spool
folder and/or quit. HAHAHAHA

After several frustrating attempts (including several reboots) to figure out
why all of a sudden the CPU was pegged at 100% and the computer barely
working, I went into the mail spool folder, deleted that message waiting to
send...and VOILA! Server was back to normal. (I don't even know why it
occurred to me to check that.)

Why it grabbed onto the one little file and was so dedicated to getting it
sent is beyond me, but now, when I test apps that have CFMAIL tags that run,
and I'm not hooked up to send, I know I have to go delete that file.

SO..I was thinking maybe you have a CFMAIL tag working and they
aren't getting out? Anybody else ever have this happen?

Subject: Processor Spike

Hello,

I recently changed enviroments for our coldfusion 4.5.1 sp2 application to a
new ISP with 2 new servers. Basically we had the SQL Server 7.0 and the
ColdFusion Server on the same NT 4 box. We split the DB and web/cf server
onto 2 new boxes both running Windows 2k Server sp2. I spent several days
configuring the new servers and we went live this morning. Now, the
processor on the new cf/web server is always at 100%. ColdFusion Server is
taking all the rescources. It's a single 1ghz processor with 512 ram,
Windows 2k Server and coldfusion 4.5.1 sp2. It didn't start until after we
went live. I have stopped and started the CF server and each time the
processor goes to 100% almost instantly. I have also rebooted several times
with no luck. Is there a patch I need. Both the old and the new servers have
the same coldfusion version and patch. What am I missing?

TIA

This is *exactly* why you never run as root unless you absolutely have to
(even then you can often get away w/ running only the current command as
root using su).

First suggestion is restoring from your daily backup. You *do* have a daily
backup don't you? :)

As far as recovery goes, assuming that the OpenBoot security level is not
set to full you should be able to quickly recover with the help of the
Solaris CD. Basically it will consist of booting off the CD, mounting the
partition that normally contains /etc (and the partion where you think it
went), and restoring it to it's proper location.

For more exact details on how to do the boot and mount, you should be able
to find some FAQ or info on one of the many Solaris sites (
http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Software/Operating_Systems/Unix/So
laris/ ) or your favourite Solaris book.

1. Depends on what you're locking! If you're locking application variables,
you're probably best to go for 1 or two seconds. If you're locking access to
a file, which might be locked for a lengthy writing process, go for
something longer. In general, I go for one or two second timeouts with
throwonerror="yes", then I can catch the error and display something
meaningful to the client, rather than have them wait for ages thinking the
server is down.

2. See 1. above !

3. In this situation, I'd go for this -

#VARIABLES.CatName#

That way you only lock for the minimum amount of time/code, which is always
good practice. If you cache your APPLICATION variables into a local struct,
you only need to lock the bit that copies the values, and you're free to
read and write to the local struct as much as you like.

Hope that helps

3 quick Qs about Locking:

1. how do you set the right timeout value? i.e - what are the rules and
opinions on that? (longer
time or shorter and "efficient"?

2. throwonerror? yes or no? what is recommened? assuming the program may not
use the current
variable?

3. please look at this:

1. #application.cats[url.catid].catNAME#
2. MORE "PURE" HTML
3. MORE "PURE" HTML
4. MORE "PURE" HTML
5.

6. MORE "PURE" HTML
8. MORE "PURE" HTML
9.

what is better? to provide 2 "quick" locks around line#1 and around line#5-9
or to provide a "bigger" lock around lines1-9?
in general, when the content inside the lock is pure html, with no use of
CF/Other Process
and ofcourse, no other shared variable, is it necessary to close and re-open
another lock?

I do work for Macromedia, and can certainly vouch for the performance of
ColdFusion, which is one of the reasons Half.com uses it. In addition to
Half.com, there are dozens of other large-scale Web sites that use
ColdFusion, including Autobytel and SmartMoney.com. For a more objective
perspective on performance, there is an extensive performance brief on the
Allaire Members Only Web site (accessible to all partners) that provides
benchmarks for ColdFusion 4.5. These are also being updated for ColdFusion
5, which provides dramatically improved performance across all platforms.

As to the comment in the article from PC Magazine, the quotation was
paraphrased and taken out of context, which is unfortunate. We strongly
believe that ColdFusion is a very effective development platform for
high-volume, business-critical Web applications. It's proven itself again
and again in this arena. I tried to make the point that ColdFusion can work
well in a multi-tier environment, and if you want to use other languages to
implement part of your application, ColdFusion offers you that flexibility.
Unfortunately that point was lost. We're committed to building a positive
public image for ColdFusion, and we're going to keep working this issue.

Thanks for your comments. As always, we are dedicated to working harder with
ColdFusion. I'm glad this mailing list has been set up, as it offers a very
good forum for partners like those in this thread to offer comments and
feedback.

I like the Allaire Alive format. Using Flash to deliver a tutorial or

Fits one of my client's needs perfectly!

Question iswhat was/is required to make that presentation besides Flash?
Can a powerpoint presentation be used for the slide show? What are the
limitations if any? Does it have to be on a streaming server? Or does it not
have anything to do with streaming?

Any info at all is much appreciated! Thanks for your time!

Hi!
I need to implement an e-commerce package for one of my
sites, but I haven't worked with e-commerce before. What
they want is fairly simple, just the ability to buy items
on-line. This in mind, I think AbleCommerce would be
over-kill. The two I have researched are CFWebstore and
Cartease. I'm torn between the two...does anyone have
reasons to go with one or the other? What I need is a
solution that I can add on to an existing site or build a
complete store from scratch. Ease of implementation would be
nice too :)

I'm parsing some text through CF that comes from another publishing system.

The publishing system allows text to be centered, justified, left justified,
right justified, etc.

Each justification leaves a mysterious character in the string. In HTML
this just shows up as a box.

I'm having a devil of a time figuring out or tracking down what the ASCII
code is for these characters. Even the tech support for the publishing
system doesn't know.

Any of the smart people on this list know?

Ok here's another code snippet, this is a password gen that I use now
and then. The slight advantage of this one is
it creates a word which hopefully more rememberable than just random
letters and numbers. There's more than one occurrence of some letters
to tip the odds towards those.

OT: Data Integrity - Q of the Day

2001-05-10 Thread Erika L. Walker

Here's a question that's been bothersome for some time.

We have an interface where participants register for meeting. There is a
form they fill out with basic information, including the pharmaceutical
company they are associated with.

We use drop downs where we can to keep data as constant as possible, but we
cannot use dropdowns for the company they are with as there are far too many
to compile and list.

And therein lies our problem. Users from one company can have a half dozen
different ways to spell their company name.

There is an admin search page where an administrator can search for
registered users by several different criteria, one of which is the user's
company name. I dynamically build a drop down for this field on the search
page by pulling all distinct company names from the db. Of course, there are
several different variations of the company name in the dropdown, which
makes it very cumbersome.

Has anyone had to deal with this? If so, how did you deal with it? And/or
does someone have an idea on how to go about dealing with it?

Here is a different approach that would find the next conference even if it
was in the same month.

select top 1 CORFNBR, CODATE, COTIME, CONAME, CODESCR, COSPEAKER, COSPECIAL
from CONFERENCES, SPEAKERS
where CORFNBR IN (#ValueList(getconfnumbers.RCCORFNBR)#)
and COSPEAKER = SPRFNBR
and conferences.CODATE > (Database function to return todays date i.e.,
getdate(), now())
order by conferences.codate desc

Some pointing in the right direction please

I generate an email based upon a user's attendance of a conference on a
particular day. The email is going to tell the user when the next conference
is.

I pull a list of all conferences.

Here is my SQL statement:

select CORFNBR, CODATE, COTIME, CONAME, CODESCR, COSPEAKER, COSPECIAL
from CONFERENCES, SPEAKERS
where CORFNBR IN (#ValueList(getconfnumbers.RCCORFNBR)#)
and COSPEAKER = SPRFNBR
and month(conferences.CODATE) = #nextMonth#
Works great if there is a conference in June (for next month).
But not if the next conference is in say, August.

So,.. I can't see the light hereit's on the tip of my brain, but I'm
having trouble figuring it out. I need to loop through an index of nextMonth
until it matches a month in the conference list, right?

Am I thinking in the right direction?

Signed,
Going Loopy. (yeah, yeah, yeah, I already am!)

SurePay wants your transaction data in XML form, but they provide examples

SECURITY CHECKS

2001-05-08 Thread Erika L Walker

Speaking of security and how to go about fixing here, here is some excellent
advice from people on the lists.a compilation from my posts last week.

--
You're not going to like what I have to say, I don't think.

If your server has been compromised, you can't fix it by simply taking it
offline and installing patches. Anything on the server could very well have
been compromised. Ideally, you should wipe the disks, reinstall the OS and
everything else, and restore your application files from a trusted backup.
Otherwise, you can't be sure that other back doors haven't been set up on
the box.

During the reinstall process, you might want to take a look at the following
resources, in addition to everything else that's been suggested:

"Securing Windows NT/2000 Servers for the Internet", Stefan Norberg,
O'Reilly. This is a very good explanation of securing IIS web servers, and
contains good step-by-step instructions.

"Hardening Windows 2000 Guide", available as a PDF download:
http://www.systemexperts.com/win2k/HardenWin2K.html

"Windows NT Security Guidelines", written by Trusted Systems for NSA,
available as a download:
http://www.trustedsystems.com/tss_nsa_guide.htm
This doesn't have too much to do with web services specifically, but
provides a clear description of basic use of ACLs, which is essential for
securing your web server.

Finally, check out securityfocus.com and the other security sites. They may

Websites in America and China are the trophies. It's not a 'real war', but

Hi,

I thought the group would like to see the techniques of a recent attack on
our web servers. They've been doing this a couple times a day for a week.
UUNet (their ISP) is slow in doing stopping them.

To secure IIS we've removed all extensions except cfm. We've taken out all
the iis folders and files like /mdac, /scripts and /printers. We've secured
cfide folder with passwords including locking out the user after a couple
failed attempts and log the failures. Lastly, we've remove all permissions
from cmd.exe.

This has kept them out to date. Any additional ideas are welcomed. Non of
this is top secret info, the hackers already know it, but do you and are you
protected?

Look for fellow programmer references.

Check the actual formis the input name the same as what you are

I've checked datasource name etc. Could anyone suggest what I may be

I know this was on the list at some pointbut I cannot find it.

Here is my scenario

I have a page that runs some queries.
Based upon the queries, I create an HTML page that contains the results of
said queries.
I don't want to show this page to the user, I just want to save it to a

Can I do this?

If the field is marked as text, shouldn't there be ticks around the

Is uderid a text field or is skill a text field?

system logs, web logs, CF logs and whatever you may find his attack route.
Finally, check out securityfocus.com and the other security sites. They may
know.

ALL of my client sites were hacked and defaced last week - (by Evil
Angelica) - and the only common thread among them was my WS-FTP.INI file.
I would suggest taking a look here to find the common thread, which might
give you a clue:

PoisonBox is a rather infamous group of hackers...if they want in, they can
get in. I believe they where the group that bragged of hacking 200+ Chinese
websites recently, and got mentioned in Wired...

Take a look at the time the files were altered, look in your log files
around those times. See if you can find out what urls where requested, or
see of any other abnormal activity was going on.

Make sure all of the below holes are patched or taken care of too.

Websites in America and China are the trophies. It's not a 'real war', but
you've got hackers and crackers from both sides hitting the other for
protest points.
As for you ISP, they may say that the security is your problem or they may
not. Best thing to do is make sure your patches are up to date, follow the
proper coding standards so as to not open any holes and keep an eye on some
security lists or sites.

Hacking Exposed is a great book to learn about network and computer
security. It covers the basics of hacking and how to protect yourself. It
even has a section on website hacking and uses Cold Fusion as an example. I
would recommend it to anyone interested in securing their server/network.

Also have a couple of script-kiddie tools I would be happy to run on your
site to check the basics. Send me an email off the list if you are
interested.

As far as IIS4/5 is concerned, a version not completely up to date (read:
get mail notification of new exploits/patches) is a security hole waiting to
happen, especially if the old pre-asp htr extensions are enabled. Heh, it's
actually still a security hole waiting to happen even patched but that's
just IIS. I'm not overly familiar w/ anything win32 so you might want to
check these sites.

My opinion is that we should move to the CF-Community list if we're going to
be doing more lightening up today (or any day). Of course, they're all very
light there any day. Dancing horses, bad jokes, and every other OT thing you
can imagine. The community is very strong and weirder than you can imagine.

OT but VIQ: Denial of Service Attacks

2001-04-30 Thread Erika L Walker

A client of mine got hacked over the weekend.

The hacker was PoisonBOx or someone posing as PoisonBOx.

They only infected default.asp, index.asp and default.htm, index.htm pages.
Thankfully, on this particular box, we don't use any of them.

Obviously there are vulnerabilities lurking around in IIS4/SP6 that need to
be addressed and the client is now in the process of making sure each and
every patch/hot fix that exists is in place and that permissions are set up
as they should be.

My question is, has anybody else been affected by this particular hacker,
and if so, did you ever find out how exactly they got in?

A search on PoisonBOx turned up 74 results, with news articles from websites
being hacked, etc. But I can't find anything on whether or not they figured
out how the &*^%#@ got in!

Ahh, Monday morning. how sweet it is.

Thanks for any feedback...,

Erika
