Except for the fact that the General lists the 3.70 as a 10 bolt carrying
part number 3961414 and the 3.73 as a 12 bolt carrying part number 3961408
for Chevrolet.

If you're telling us that the 3.70 and 3.73 are the same gear sets, maybe
your day-to-day grind is too much. :*)

 hey guys,
I deal with this in my day 2 day grind,
   3.70:1 3.73:1 are the same ratio/gear set..
in order ta make them different the would have ta be such a fine
tooth count that they would have no strength at all -- same with their
 trucks which were advertised as
front-4.09:1 4.11:1rear- purpose 4 this is so they could tell
 people that
the front axle would pull the rear axle 4 greater

I was wondering about thatseemed like a small amount to change for a
 gear set.

3.70 and 3.73 are different. They are different pinion / ring gear combinations.
A 10 tooth pinion with a 37 tooth ring gear (which Ford uses) gives you a 3.70 .
An 11 tooth pinion with a 41 tooth ring gear will give you a 3.73. Close, but
not quite the same.

In my previous post I included a link to an EAA site
with some info about oxygenated fuel. Here's another
(it wraps so you'll need to rebuild the string):

http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/fuels/bulletin/motorgas/c

Basically I did a google.com search for oxygenated
and gasoline. There's a lot of info/propaganda out
there and quite a bit of it's definitely slanted one way
or another. I suggest stockpiling salt grains prior to
visiting any websites. ;^)

Larry, you can find some elementary info at
http://www.eaa.org/education/fuel/oxygenated.html.

Just as an aside, some oxygenates can really do a number
on older rubber fuel hose. I strongly encourage
everyone to upgrade their fuel systems with new hose
designed to be compatible with modern gasoline
formulations. Hose marked 30R7 is good for carbureted
engines and 30R9 works for higher-pressure systems like
fuel injection.

WOW! That sounds very expensive. You should try looking around salvage or
swap meets, most people cant tell the differences between the 3 of them.
You should be able to pick one up for about $500.00 then rebuilt for an
additional 350.00 at any tranny shop. I spent about $900.00 total for my
M22 purchased at the one of the super- chevy show about 3yrs ago not
including the pressure plate, clutch and aluminium flywheel.

Are the Edelbrock carbs any good?

I have an Edelbrock 1406 on my Elky and it performed very well until
recently. The choke coil is gone and the every once in awhile it stumbles
onff the start. Considering the carb costs less than the new Holley (which
is 'sposed to be the neatest thing since sliced bread) and the fact that
mine is now five years old, I'd say it's a very good choice. It is
calibrated for mileage over performance, get the manual choke model (1405?)
for performance.

If I remember correctly, the M-22 uses straight cut gears instead of
helical cut gears as in the M-21. That's where the Rock Crusher name

Re: [Chevelle-List] Paint Job Prices

2001-11-26 Thread Spatch

Well I think I forgot to mention one more important
fact in the whole transaction. He also told me it wouldn't be done for
almost a year. :-( I would have much less problem with the $5000
estimate if he would just jump on it and do it and get it done. Why, if
shops are getting paid for their time, do they insist on putting it behind
insurance work. I mean couldn'ta shop just jump on it and get it
done in a couple of weeks and then get their money? Sheesh. I can
honestly say that after all the troubles I have had trying to get this thing
looking decent (this is about the 10th shop I've been to and the first other
than Maaco who would actually take the job)that I am almost to the point
of just selling the damn thing as it is and waiting until I can buy a Chevelle
with a paint job already. :-( This "hobby" shouldn't be so
frustrating.

Spatch, those numbers don't sound too far off amazingly. As
you may know, I recently got my 72 finished. My buddy (who owns the body shop)
allowed me to do all the labor. (I stripped the whole car, cut off the rear
quarters, welded the new ones on, skinned a door, removed and replaced all the
glass, fixed rust spots, removed and reinstalled new outer wheelhouses, primed
and blocked the whole body etc...) The only things he really did other than
guide me were to help put the front sheetmetal on and align it, shoot the
paint and buff it. Anyway, he just gave me the bill for materials only. It was
$1400. It was basecoat, clear coat, and lots of Uro prime and Vari- Prime,
plus seam sealers, metal ready, sand paper,etc... I can't even begin to
imagine how many hours I had in doing all the prep work, but I will tell you,
I started the body work in Jan. of last year, by removing the 1/4's at home
and stripping the roof, doors etc... Then tho doors, hood, fenders
anddeck lidwere primed, blocked, and cut in in the new
color. After all that was ready, the car shell was ready to go into the
shop in June and was completed in the last week in Sept. At that time I
brought the painted shell home and started putting all the glass, trim and
interior in. During those ten months, I spent every day off and many hours
before and after work at the shop and I have 3 days a week, off!

 Rob,
I agree with you 100%, you really don't get much
easyer to work on than a Holley, I think a lot of
people dog on Holleys only because they buy a carb
thats three times bigger than they need, and they
wonder why the carb doesn't work well for there

Spatch.

Sounds like the shops you are taking your car to are Auto Body Shops not
restoration. Body Shops almost always put Insurance/Collision work first...
that's where they can make the most money, the quickest. Look into a shop
that does restoration work... I think you will be better satisifed and
possibly get a better job. Maybe not a cheaper job money wise. Just
remember you pay for what you get.

The short answer is that non-oxygenated is plain old gasoline. Oxygenated
includes additives that promote combustion-MTBE being the most common, but
alcohol is used in some places. Most all gas is now oxygenated due to
emissions. I'd avoid alcohol, as it can corrode systems. Otherwise, I never
got too excited about it. When I lived in St. Louis, MTBE gas was all we
could get, and I ran it in a blown 454 without problem.

Don, could you please describe the way your HEI's
wired? Since your '71 didn't come with it from the
factory someone obviously added it later.

When I convert from points to HEI (or any other ignition
requiring 12 volts) I like to run a 10-gauge wire
straight from the IGN tap in the fuse block, if it's
available.

You didn't say what the load was for the relay, only the supply. However, I
would expect that this relay might be providing voltage to the starter
solenoid. This is a common fix for the hot soak problem many Chevy
starters suffer from. If so, then I think your ignition switch is
definitely suspect for the run-on problem.

But first, verify for sure that this relay is in line with the starter
solenoid. If it's still in line with the coil, get rid of it, see if the
problem persists, and if so look to the ignition switch as your likely
problem.

Interesting. Does this relay do anything else other
than feed the coil? I would start by seeing if there's
any current going through the coil lead with the
ignition off, then with the ignition on, and then with
the ignition off again. Also, consider these 3 tests
with the indicator placed between the relay and its
source of power; this will help determine if the problem
is with the relay or some element located before it in
the circuit.

I have to agree that the edelbrock is by far the best bolt on and run carb.
However, I was at the dragstrip and after bolting on a 390 cfm holley on my
283 (yes the nascar mandated one) i got five tenths out of it. It knocked
down 18 mpg on the highway and had unreal throttle response. Contrary to
popular belief it only became restrictive at 6,000. It was the best $10 i
could have spent on my car. And once i dialed it in it ran like a top. and
with the right model all holleys run like that, you might just have to play
with it. Call Holley and ask them which one is best.

Rob,
I agree with you 100%, you really don't get much
easyer to work on than a Holley, I think a lot of
people dog on Holleys only because they buy a carb
thats three times bigger than they need, and they
wonder why the carb doesn't work well for there

[Chevelle-List] question: power steering pumps 327/275 horse motors?

2001-11-26 Thread Paul Hernandez

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

I located a short style power steering pump from a 68 chevy 350 suburban.
and I tried installing it on my 68 chevelle just to find out that it does
not clear my steering box even if I adjust it as far as possible away from
the steering box. I may be wrong but I think this will only fit a camaro or
the donor vehicle. Does anyone know what other type of pump will fit with
brackets. My current bracket has the two vertical bolts that bolt up to the
driver side of the block on the driver side of the water pump while the
other piece bolts to the motor mount. My question, If I find a power
steering bracket with pump from a later model long style say Monte Carlo or
what ever does anyone on this list know if it will bolt up and not have any
alignment problems with the short style original pulley configuration ?

On another note, I found a 67 chevy Impala 4-door with the 327/ 275 horse
motor and it had camel hump heads, a/c, power steering missing, ram horns
and, air cleaner which looks like the base plate for a Holley carb since it
has the two dimples in the front back to clear the needle screws on top
of the carb. Anyway is this also the base engine option for the 68
chevelle? I thought only camel humps came in performance option vehicles
only? I didn't think they would carry the option of A/C.

I got that part licked thanks to a home improvement magazine issue. 1st
you put a powerful box fan in the window with a filter in front of it to
take out the paint, then you use plastic sheeting to cover any and all
ways for the paint to escape. Then you put a small piece of the plastic
across the access door and tape it. Now you have a great paint spray

You didn't say what the load was for the relay, only the supply. However,
I
would expect that this relay might be providing voltage to the starter
solenoid. This is a common fix for the hot soak problem many Chevy
starters suffer from. If so, then I think your ignition switch is
definitely suspect for the run-on problem.

But first, verify for sure that this relay is in line with the starter
solenoid. If it's still in line with the coil, get rid of it, see if the
problem persists, and if so look to the ignition switch as your likely
 problem.

I have always done my own engines. What I do is have a good engine shop
clean my block and heads. Then I let them do any boring of the block. I let
them do the head work, valve job, valve seals and test the heads for leaks or
cracks. Then I do the rest of the assembly work myself. It is not hard to
put the crank, bearing and pistons in. I assemble the spring, valve and
rockers myself. Install the camshaft and anything else I want to do. Just
find someone good to the block and head work and do the rest yourself. Once
you have done it one time, you will feel really good, no more fears.

Hey Michael -
I'm deciding the same thing too. I think the polished ones look really
cool, but with no coating of any kind the polished aluminum will oxidize over
time and exposure to the elements and will require periodic wheel removal and
cleaning/polishing with aluminum polish to keep it looking good. The interval
will of course be affected by how often you use your car and your local
climate. The paint Baer uses is actually a powder coating that is ~3x thicker
than a normal coat of paint and is much more resilient, and it doesn't require
as much maintenance. I think I'm going to go with bright yellow powder coat on
mine, to match my yellow shocks, traction bar snubbers and BMR Fabrication rear
control arm kit. HTH.

Hey Michael -
I'm deciding the same thing too. I think the polished ones look
really
cool, but with no coating of any kind the polished aluminum will oxidize
over
time and exposure to the elements and will require periodic wheel removal
and
cleaning/polishing with aluminum polish to keep it looking good. The
interval
will of course be affected by how often you use your car and your local
climate. The paint Baer uses is actually a powder coating that is ~3x
thicker
than a normal coat of paint and is much more resilient, and it doesn't
require
as much maintenance. I think I'm going to go with bright yellow powder
coat on
mine, to match my yellow shocks, traction bar snubbers and BMR Fabrication
rear
control arm kit. HTH.

type of yellow, so I'm sure they have a wide selection of colors. You can call

Dang Michael.

My 67 is in the engine shop right now or I'd run out and take a better
picture of the Baer polished calipers. You might try

You can compare them to

Welcome aboard, Steve. I have a '69 also that I am restifying like you plan
to do. One thing I have learned the last couple of years is don't let the
purists out there discourage you from doing the car the way YOU want it.
Too many guys out there saying that's not restored correctly. If it is
done to your liking, that is all that matters. Have fun with your project !

 Hi peoples,

I just signed up on the list and just wanted to say Hi. I
pick up a 69 Chevelle in about a week as part of my Xmas present.

Any restoration tips would be greatly appreciated. It's a middle of the
road restore case from what I have seen, but has lots of typical rust for
a
midwest car. I noticed that there are plenty of replacement parts
available,
and some buddys offered to teach me to weld them in, as well as offer the
use of their welding equipment. I have a lot to learn and that's part of
why
I am signing up here. TEACH me please oh knowledegable and experienced
ones
 :)

It's not going to be a racing car, although it IS a sports/muscle car
and
will look the part as well as act it if/when I want. I hope to be able to
control that and keep it to a minimum, speeding tickets are expensive ;) I
hope to only drive it to work occasionally, special occasions, warm summer
nights, and cruise-in's. I don't plan on competing in large shows
against
guys that have a lot more money than me.

Right now it has a stock mid 80's 350 in it, but I think that will have to
be replaced with a 396 or reasonable facsimile thereof ;) I also plan to
replace the auto-magic with a 4 speed. Replace the bench with buckets, and
put in a console. I know, a lot of modifications, and why didn't I just
leave it as it is or buy a diffrent car? Well I WANT a 4 speed, and for
the
shape it's in, the price was about right and maybe as cheap as I can get
started and still have something to work with. I am aware that it won't be
original or as valuable to collectors or purists. I am building this car
for ME !!! Not anyone else.

Ok, ok, it may be part of a midlife crises thing, and I know it will be
expensive! But will help to keep me busy and out of trouble ;) Therefore
maybe less expensive in the longrun ? ;)

If you would care to E-mail me, and/or have a web site for your car that
can
assist me in tips, techiniques, good places to buy parts etc. I would
 appreciate hearing from you.

Again Hi guys and gals, please be gentle with me :)

Steve

Someone in ACES has an awesome Black 70 SS Elky with LS6,six speed, and
billet 17 wheels. That car gives me a woodie.
If I can't buy my 68 back,I've been thinking about finding a nicely painted
69 SS Elky and building it similar to my old 68. However, this time I'm not
going to run 20 wheels on the back again but will mini-tub the back half so
I can run some 18x13's with 345/35/18 rubber. Baer has really slashed their
pricing on their Alcon stuff;i.e. front 14 rotors with six piston Alcon
calipers for less than $3500(normally over $6K). My ZR-1 is just too complex
for me,anymore, and El Caminos have always been my favorite car. As you
know,I sold my 40 Ford streetrod,57 Chev Nomad,and 68 Elky so I could afford
to keep the ZR-1 when the wife got sick. Really wish I would've kept the
Nomad Elky, instead. Oh well, you live and learn.

That last digit of the P code should tell me if it's a m20, m21, or m22. C

[Chevelle-List] Virus information update

2001-11-26 Thread Keith Cooper

To all Chevelle.net members,
I am sorry for any trouble that anyone had by my
friend opening the attachment from Mike Wood. I have seriously chewed out his
ass. My Norton Anti-Virus 2001 program did not catchthe virus because the
automatic update was not updating the virus definition file. It was only
updating the program and notthe virus definition file. I had to go
to http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-N95.htmlto
manually get the new virus file. It found two infected files, kdll.dll and
kernel32.exe. The virus starts out as Readme.mp3.scr and changes to
News.doc.scr, humor.mp3.scr etc, but virus is really the W32.badtrans.B@mm virus.
I did not start the virus, but from all the emails
returns and messages from service providers about detecting a virus, it has been
sent to everyone in my address book and every website I have been. Again I am
sorry. If you do not open or save the file you will be OK. I would update your
Virus Definition Files for whatever virus program you are using. I am seriously
embarrassed about this.
I work on computers and if anyone has this virus
and needs help restoring these two files, please email and I will give you
instruction on how to do this repair. The Norton Anti-Virus program is not able
to repair the files so you will have to manual replace these files from your
Windows 95/98 installation disk. If you want, you can send your Thanks to Mike
Wood:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Because he did not response to my email about the
virus, I would say itwas intentionly

68 and 69 M22's have a main case casting number of 3925660...could there be
a zero at the end of that? The page says, Muncie data shows 1968 and 1969
M22 received maincase #3925661. All documented M22 transmissions have the
#3925660 maincase. It's unclear as to why this discrepancy exists.
