Re: [Chevelle-list] SB lifter question
So, the story is I had a collapsed lifter as I suspected and also a broken intake valve spring that I didn't know about. I also want to address the issue of adjusting valves. It was said here that "turn until it stops tapping + 1/4 turn" was an old rule for solid lifters. It was pointed out to me that with solid lifters, if you go the extra 1/4 turn you are bound to bend a rod, because it has nowhere to go. Makes sense. So, the old 1/4 turn rule seems to be for hydraulic lifters only. Thanks, John Nasta
Re: [Chevelle-list] SB lifter question
Luckily it's not like I keep adjusting it and it keeps getting worse. It's more like I developed a tap and now I can't adjust it properly. Hoping for the best. Thanks everyone for the good suggestions. Quoting Jim Thompson : Sorry to bring this up. You may have a wiped cam shaft. The cam lobe has worn, you adjust lifter the cam wears down more you adjust lifter. See the cycle. You need a dial gauge to check the lift before installing new lifters. Jim

I did call the police but then the husband came out. I told him that his wife had just hit my car. Then she came out and she did not deny it. They gave me all of their info and said they would pay for a new lens. There are light scratches on the bumper & quarter panel too but I am not going to worry about those. Luckily my car is not so perfect to begin with. By the time the police arrived they had agreed to pay for it and it is less than $100 damage, so I didn't file a report. Thanks guys. I will look into it. He made it to a service station today and they determined that it was the coil, replaced that and also replaced his cap, rotor, wires and a bunch of other routine stuff and charged him $650. Car is apparently fine again. I had advised him to change to HEI when I saw how hard it was to find a place that had the points.
[Chevelle-list] OT: 1969 Mopar HEI drop-in distributor?
Hi all, I have a good friend who has been having problems with his 1969 Coronet w/ 318 & 2bbl. He got stuck a few days ago and it was very hard to find a place that sells the points & condensor. We changed those and got him running and he called a little while ago saying that he's stuck again. Luckily he has AAA. So, does anyone know of a good drop-in HEI distributor for Mopar like so many of us have for our Chevys? Thanks, John Nasta

Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 Chevelle starting problem
Had a similar problem with my 71, but difference is I replaced the backup switch, and noticed two purple wires coming into the switch, not the backup wires itself. My new switch did not have the plug attachment for these purple wires. When I went to start the car, nothing. After some needed research, those wires are the neutral saftey switch, would have never started in a million years without making those wires connect. Just made a short bridge between the two, car starts fine now! Re: [Chevelle-list] engine oil
Tom & Dan, I am also running the Chevron DELO 400 15W-40 in my '70. You are correct about the amount of ZDDP levels dropping in it. I have been working for Chevron Oronite Company, we manufacture the additives that go into engine oils, for 33 years and have been seeing the amount of ZDDP in the packages of additives that we have been shipping to our customers drop over the last couple of years. I will be staying with the DELO 400 for the reason that not only does it contain ZDDP but it also contains MOLYBDEMUN. Combined with the ZDDP that remains in it this works very well. I am not a chemist just an operator that makes the additives and sees the combinations of products that are blended together that our customers are asking for. Hope this helps. Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring question
At this point before I would buy new gages I would split the dash harness between the cluster plug and fuse box and check for melted or shorted wires. Also I would recheck all grounds to cluster and maybe run a direct ground from the battery to the cluster, straight wire. With the sending unit plugs disconnected and then shorted to ground you should have some type of movement in the gage. If there were a short or open in the harness nothing would change by removing the plugs from the senders. Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring question
What you need to do now is with ign in run, go to the senders unplug them and check for voltage at the plug. Either with a voltmeter or test light. This is checking continuity from the gauges to the sender’s plugs. If you have continuity then there is a grounding issue. If you have no voltage at the unplugged sender plugs then there is open wire to the gauges. Leo
Re: [Chevelle-list] wiring question
Bob, Jim is right. With the cluster plug connected to the cluster and Ign switch in run, you should have 12v when you disconnect the plug at either the temp sender or fuel sender. If you don’t, then there is an open somewhere between the gauge fuse and the sender plugs. You can use a test light and disconnect the sender plugs and connect the test light to these connectors. The light should light but it will be dim. As for grounding; You should ground the engine to the frame and to the body. You should ground the body to the frame. The cluster should be grounded to the dash frame. The headlight should be grounded to the cluster by a shorting strap. The fuel tank should be grounded to the frame. All of these grounds need to be in place to eliminate any grounding loops. Bad grounds will give bad readings and can cause you to go around in circles. You did indicate that your gauges never did work. My 70 El Camino had a problem that was caused by the amp meter wires had melted in the dash harness. There was no indication of a problem except that the amp didn’t move. The outside of the harness looked good. I found the problem when install a TPI engine and rewired the harness for the computer and upgrade for glass fuse to ATO. Several of the wires were melted together. These old original harness are in bad shape. Do check the grounds. Below is a copy of the 12 pin plugs for both gauges & idiot lights. With the key in the RUN position you should have 12v at pin 7, the pink wire. Pin 10, green wire, is temp from engine, no power. Pin 11, brown wire is from gas tank sender, no power. Pin 6, Blue wire is for oil pressure light, no power. If you have power at pin 7, reconnect the plug to instrument cluster, with ign switch in the RUN position, disconnect the temp connector for the sender and ground it. The temp gauge to indicate full deflection. The same indication with the fuel wire grounded. The only time you should have power to the instruments is in the run position. Re: [Chevelle-list] So, your front inner wheel bearing is stuck to the spindle...
The bearing was not dry. It was greased and working, but the inner race was stuck to the spindle. I think the thing is that when you have a car that has been sitting and you change the bearings, you should clean the spindle w/ emery cloth and put some anti-seize or at least some grease between the bearing race and the spindle. Quoting Rick Schaefer : Me too- neither - thankfully. But I have heard of it happening before. Suppose the only way it happens is if the bearing runs dry.
[Chevelle-list] So, your front inner wheel bearing is stuck to the spindle...
Went to install new front brake shoes and found that my inner wheel bearing was stuck to the spindle. Here's the short version... Tried to pry the bearing off, which caused the bearing to fall apart Bought the biggest pair of channel lock pliers I could find, heated the inner race w/ a propane torch (get it as hot as possible) and was able to wrestle it off (sounds much simpler than it was). Cleaned the spindle w/ coarse then fine emery cloth. Let the spindle cool and test fit the new bearing to make sure it slides on & off (put some grease on the spindle). Everything's cool. So, if this ever happens to you don't panic. Best way to get the old bearing off is to try to pry it and if it breaks apart use a torch and a big channel lock to get the race off. If you need to cut the race, obviously avoid the threaded part of the spindle and if you scratch the back part where the bearing sits, clean it up w/ emery cloth. It won't kill the spindle but obviously try not to gouge it. It helps to get the race at least a little bit away from the backing plate. Don't strike the spindle w/ a hammer. If you have to hammer or chisel, work toward the backing plate. Don't apply force to the spindle. HTH, John Nasta

Thanks Tom. My brother pulled out the reservoir bottle and the hoses and all before I got the car, but I think I still have everything and it should all work if I just take the time to hook it up. Re: [Chevelle-list] Autolite Racing Plugs
Not unusual with BBC. Has to do with fuel distribution most of time. But you will probably need to go up just a small bit in plug heat range. Or if you can find one in a very close but slightly hotter heat rance a Commercial (Heavy equipment/Heavy duty line) plug will usually stand up better. Autolite is very good and used to make a Commercial set of plugs for lots of different combinations. Maybe look in C-60 BBC truck engine line. - Original Message - From: "Larry Williams" To: "The Chevelle Mailing List" Sent: Monday, August 24, 2009 8:04 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Autolite Racing Plugs Yes. Re: [Chevelle-list] Autolite Racing Plugs
Hi.new person here. I've been reading this list for awhile, very impressed with all the knowledge. I've learned quite a bit already. I also have a question about plugs: I'm restoring a 70 Chevelle Malibu, engine & trans were built when I bought it. Has a 454, .030 over, Magnum cam, 750 Holley (vac. secondary's), TH350 w/kit, TCI converter- 2000 stall, 12 bolt posi-4.88 gears, headers, roller rockers, etc. I was racing it (12.5 sec., 108 mph)..now I'm restoring it for show. My question is: what plugs would be recommended for street use/smooth idle? I had "Splitfire" plugs in it but one just quit working and they were expensive. I expect a number of opinions but I have no idea what would be best to use. Thanks for any help (I'm sure I'll have more questions). Just a little caveat emptor... When I built the engine for my El Camino 4 or 5 years ago, I put one of those shiny chrome thermostat housings on it. It rotted from the inside and developed a hole, which caused a bad leak. Today I bought the good old fashioned cast one and the walls of it are substantially thicker. Re: [Chevelle-list] Aftermarket Parts
The truth is that the only companies that are having Chevelle sheet metal parts stamped are Dynacorn and Goodmark, so the retailers mostly all carry the same stuff and it just becomes a matter of price and delivery time. With the economy being the way it is, most retailers (especially those who do know have a "brick and mortar" storefront and the smaller stores) are carrying less inventory and having everything drop-shipped, which makes everybody's delivery time about the same, which only leaves price as a major consideration. On the subject of price, it's a troubled business right now as prices have been fluctuating wildly with the cost of transportation rising and falling accordingly with fuel prices. Dynacorn doesn't even post prices on most items on their wholesale web site any more, and prices on the Excel spreadsheets that they sent me in March are already wrong. I often have to reject orders because the price has changed so much that I would either lose money or literally make nothing by filling the order. I just sent someone a refund for roughly $1100 today for that reason. Luckily auto parts is not my only business. OPGI and some of the hot rod & speed stores (Jegs, Summit, etc.) distinguish themselves by carrying things like your disc brake conversion kit and other speed and customization parts rather than strictly reproduction restoration parts. Trevor sells used parts as well as new parts, although I don't know how he does it considering the storage and labor costs involved. I have purchased some used things from him myself and he sold me good stuff at good prices. I have always heard good things about NPD and IIRC that's the one owned by the Bumgarner's who participate in this list. You guys can correct me if I'm wrong. I have never dealt with Ausleys or GM Restoration Parts (didn't even know that was the name of a retail company, and if so I'm surprised they haven't been sued by GM). It's definitely a very hard business right now, especially for the smaller fish in the pond. The idea is not to have the list become overrun with commercial announcements. There are several commercial parts & services sellers on this list and it could get crazy if they all used this listserver as a place to post advertisements. For the most part the rule is respected and the friendly non-commercial discourse objective is preserved. BTW Tom, I was recently talking with Rob Sauerhaft at GOLF Magazine about you. Quoting ntowl...@aol.com: Not sure what the big deal is..I like the idea that a couple of times a year that I get an email from Trevor telling me that he's got a sale going on, or anybody else that is on the list selling stuff that will benefit me and my Chevelle. Re: [Chevelle-list] door shell

Re: [Chevelle-list] sail panel install
I should try the brush-on stuff. So far I have been using sprays and the hold doesn't last. With contact cement you have to coat both of the surfaces that are being bonded to each other. I assume when you say the "good side" you are referring to the side that shows, which of course you don't want glue on. You do want to put to glue on the cardboard panel as well as the back of the fabric though. John Quoting Rick Schaefer : Definitely brush on. And I'm not sure if I'm understanding John correctly, but I didn't use any glue on the "good" side.
Re: [Chevelle-list] sail panel install
Sail panels are an ongoing battle for me. I did cut darts in the back. It becomes obvious when you start test-wrapping the material around the curves of the panel that this has to be done in order for it to conform. My mom also sews, quilts, etc. so it was not the first time I had ever heard of the concept. Anyway, the glue is another story. With any kind of contact cement it's important to spray both sides and let it dry a few minutes until it's tacky rather than wet (the Super 77 can says to bond when it is "aggressively tacky"). Hold the can 6 to 8 inches away, keep it moving and don't spray too much. If your headliner material is porous it can ooze out the other side and it is hard to get off. Maybe it's a symptom of the fact that I park outdoors in all kinds of weather, but mine fall down at least once a year, meaning that the material separates from the boards. I have tried 3M Headliner Adhesive as well as Super 77. Maybe some day I'll just buy the pre-done ones and get it over with. John

Wouldn't any 68-72 work as long as it's from a two-door? I'd like to get one for my '69 El Camino because the seat that is in there is from a four door car, so the backs don't tilt up. The seat does not even seem to be from a 68-72 A-body because only two mounts line up at a time (front or back but not both) and the seat is too far forward even when it's all the way back. Hopefully some day that dream will be realized... Quoting Tom Rightler <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: The internet, hemmings motor news, etc. The front bench seat is pretty easy to come by. Re: [Chevelle-list] lost my keys
Glad to be able to help. In some cases locks were changed over the years and the door & ignition keys no longer match, but hopefully that's not the case for you. There are codes on the tumblers that a locksmith can use to make a key w/o having the original. If you do that, ask the locksmith to write the codes down for you. The tumblers can also be re-inserted in a different order to re-code an existing cylinder so that old keys will no longer work. There's also a diagram in the Fisher Body Manual that you can lay a key on to figure out the tumbler codes. I did this once and emailed the codes to a guy in another state, and he was able to make new keys for me w/o ever seeing the originals. Of course this is not terribly useful because you need to have a key to do it, but it is another way to determine your key codes, which you can write down and save in case you lose the keys in the future. In my case, I just did it as an experiment to see if it would work, and it did. It is also helpful in cases where the key you have is very worn, because the new one will match the original rather than the worn out one. [Chevelle-list] 1969 EC electrical problem
I think I know what to do here, but I'll run it by the list in case I'm setting myself up for disaster. I somehow recently developed what seems to be a dead short in the fat red wire that goes from the battery to the horn relay (my junction block is gone). It's killing the battery when the car is sitting. I detached that wire at both ends and noticed that if I put a meter between the positive battery terminal and either end of that wire, it pulls full battery voltage and amperage. So, as a test I was thinking about bypassing that wire and running a new one to the horn relay. The other option would be to take the radiator top plate off, unwrap the harness, look for physical damage and replace that wire if it is damaged. A little more work but probably a more sophisticated approach. Anyway, since the list is slow I just thought I'd see if anyone has any suggestions. Unfortunately my battery seems to be toast. It was stone dead when I realized the problem. I had it on a .5A battery tender for about 5 days and it only got up to 8V. That charger is really for my motorcycle battery. Maybe it's just not strong enough for a car battery. I figured if it couldn't charge it in 5 days it never will. Maybe now that it has 8V it would be ok to jump it. Any thoughts are appreciated. I just got those cards yesterday too. If anyone wants the codes, email me off-list. I recently canceled my subscription, so there's nothing in it for me. John Nasta Quoting Dale <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: Off topic - NetFlix I'm a Netflix subscriber and today I received 4 trial cards for free movies. Basically what you get is 1 free month of movies as a trial offer.
[Chevelle-list] thank you
Well, as you can see, I'm back on the list. I just want to say thank you to everyone who sent kind words, thoughts and prayers, the people who posted messages on my brother's tribute site, and especially the Rightler family who I basically have to thank every day of my life for their kindness and understanding. Sincerely, John Nasta

Re: [Chevelle-list] A Veteran
You need to read what I said. “I can’t agree more with the paragraph at the bottom of this post.” After thirty years and retired form the Navy, I rather believe that I AM a Veteran! I didn’t do 2 or 4 and jump out, and I gave that blank check several times. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: chevelle-list@chevelles.net Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2008 12:01 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] A Veteran I'm in late guys but I have to respond. What's there not to agree with. Nothing political here. No disrepect but obviously you're not a veteran! Phil G. 65 SS

[Chevelle-list] signing off for a while
Unfortunately my brother was killed yesterday when his small plane crashed during an air show in Rhinebeck, NY. I will not be able to check mail regularly or correspond with the group for a while. Sincerely, John Nasta
Re: [Chevelle-list] after market bumpers
The repro bumpers are fine for a driver or show and go car. There are bumper places that can add extra creamy goodness if you want to spend the extra $$. There are also re-chroming outfits that are not exactly well liked even if you do spend the extra $$. Quoting Jim & Chris <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: My origonal bumpers are in good shape but are weathered. I am considering re-pops for $ 149 ea. does anyone have any opinion or experiance with the after market bumpers. car is not a show car just a decent driver and the condition of the bumpers brings it down a bit. [Chevelle-list] Flowmaster rescinds VPP pricing
Hey, guess what. Flowmaster has already decided to rescind their VPP program, which means that now the big players who can afford to sell below jobber can squash the smaller retailers again. Flowmaster's reason is that they were losing market share to competitors by forcing their bigger retailers to raise prices.
Re: [Chevelle-list] No Mail
There has been mail in the past week but the list has generally been slow lately compared to when I first joined. Quoting "D.R. Jones" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: No mail for week now, is it me or is something broke. I even signed back up. D.R. Jones

Re: [Chevelle-list] elcamino mirror
It looks a lot like this one: http://www.oldcarnetwork.com/Merchant2/graphics/gmparts/3921816.jpg which is correct for 1968 Chevelle & El Camino, 1968-69 Camaro, and 1968-72 Impala and other full-size Chevrolets. Those cars use a standard non-remote mirror on the right. [Chevelle-list] Flowmaster introduces VPP pricing
Just FYI, Flowmaster has recently mandated that all authorized dealers sell Flowmaster products at or above jobber pricing. This is called VPP or "Value Pricing Plan". This is good for the smaller retailers who used to see the bigger companies selling these systems at the same price that the small guys were paying for it, meaning that smaller guys could not possibly compete. Unfortunately for the customers it means that the cut-throat discounting which allowed you to buy these systems below jobber will stop, but it also allows you to give your business to a smaller company without paying more. Flowmaster is threatening to pull the accounts of dealers who do not comply w/ the VPP policy. John Nasta
Re: [Chevelle-list] 72 elcamino
Just grease them everywhere that two surfaces touch. Takes a minute, can't hurt, and I'll bet it solves the problem. My El Camino hood did the same thing until I greased the hinges. Quoting Josh Campbell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: Hinges are most likely worn out and rocking to the side, or in a best case scenario the hood/ fender alingment is off but doubtful if it does it occasionally.
