Re: [Chevelle-list] (no subject)

2011-05-03 Thread Rick Schaefer
No, I've never tried an anodizing kit, I did use an anodizing remover
(BlueLightning Brand) with success. 10-15 years ago I polished the lower
trim on my elky, and the polish job was pretty good, but not great. To
protect it, I spray the pieces with a clear coat product from Eastwood.
The look lasted for a bit, but at this point needs to be redone. I am
currently trying to find time to strip and paint the Elky and when it comes
time for the trim I'll need to make a decision about which way to go, either
D-I-Y or let a pro do it. Cost will definitely be a factor.

For the hood trim, I'm assuming its Pot Metal, check with Superior Plating
or Superior Chrome out of Houston. I left the 2 forward corner trim pieces
from the bed with them this past weekend. Their estimate at the swap meet
was reasonable compared to repro trim and I know that they fit.
As for the bumper $400 does not seem too far out of line for a "show"
finish.Check with TriCity (I think that is the name) out of Tennesse,
they come highly recommended in the chevelletech forums. Again, with
original you know that there should not be fitment "issues".

I know that there are people on this list who know a lot more about this
than I so hopefully someone else will check-in.

Have you ever tried the do it yourself anodizing kits? It is it possible to
do a grill? I don't mind spending the time polishing them, I just want them
to look good when finished. My chrome moldings are pitted so all the polish
in the world won't save them so I will need to have them re-plated or
replaced. Any suggestions on where to send re-plating, the places I have
used in the past have gotten way out of line on price, they want over $300
to re-plate the molding down the center of the hood and the bumper exchange
that we use is at about $400 a bumper. The new replacement bumpers are only
$169.

The cloudy finish on the aluminum is the anodizing coating. The anodizing
needs to be removed before the parts can be polished. If you want to
polish them yourself, you can order anodizing remover from many sources
(caswellplating.com for one). Or if you have them polished by a pro,
he/she will know what to do. Then once they are polished, they should be
re-anodized to maintain the finish. Doing it yourself is not rocket
science but it is plenty of work.

As for replacement pieces, its generally recommended to keep your originals
and have them redone. Fit on replacement parts is hit or miss at best.

It could be that no vendors are advertising it or even offering it; maybe
because Windows Virtual PC no longer requires a hardware enabled CPU to run
in XP or 32-bit mode as Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 did - apparently two
different products. 64-bit is pretty much becoming the standard for new PCs
and CPUs. I bought Windows 7 Pro a few months ago and it comes with both
32- and 64-bit DVDs. I installed the 64-bit version initially. That's when
I discovered you needed a CPU with hardware virtualization to run 32-bit
programs with Virtual PC 2007. So, I reloaded the drive with the 32-bit
version so I could run my old software.

Now that Windows Virtual PC is not suppose to be hardware dependant I may
reinstall the 64-bit version and test it. On the MS website they still show
32- and 64-bit versions of Windows Home Premium for sale.

In either case I'm sure you need the Pro version to run Windows Virtual PC
as I just tried to download the software to my laptop (with 64-bit home
version) and got a dialog box saying I needed the Pro version to run it.

I assume you've gone from a 64 bit OS to a 32 bit and that the program
that won't run is a 64 bit because the other way around would work. If
your computer has a 64 bit CPU, as most new ones do, you could install
Wndows 64 bit (from your address I assume your running Windows).

Darrell,

I sent you a little longer response than this one to the list but if it's
the program I'm thinking of that was sold through Team Chevelle, I haven't
seen it available anywhere, I don't think the programmer supports it
anymore, and it won't install on a 64-bit OS.

I have not checked into the pickup situation either. Priority Mail is
pretty convenient for small stuff, especially with the new flat rate
boxes. Like you said, anything you can fit into that box goes for that
rate (presumably, and as long as it's legal).

For bigger items though I find that FedEx Ground has better rates than
UPS, but I don't have a UPS account or any discount with them, so I
guess I get the tourist rate with them.

I have a package place about a block and a half away that I just drop
stuff off at. I put my own label on it and FedEx picks it up there.

Don't forget about the new USPS 13-ounce rule (any package over 13
ounces has to be taken to the customer counter at the post office). I
don't know how it affects pickups. I wonder if that's nationwide or
just here because we have public street mailboxes for outgoing mail...

Quoting Dave Corgill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Yep, I use USPS, print my labels & they pick it up. I can ship up to 70

But no matter who you are buying from/shipping with, it stinks to pay
more for shipping & handling than the item cost you. I almost always wait
to consolidate my order OR go looking for more to buy to make it

Residential deliveries with UPS are always a dollar and some change higher
than commercial addresses. The other thing I forgot to add in is that some
companies, particularly OPG, like to base their shipping charges on dollar
value. UPS packages are automatically insured up to $99, anything after
that is a charge of about 75 cents per $100 of value. They also like to
rape you for items going oversize. I can say that oversize charges are not
$10 per piece, more like $2.

county) package less than one pound costs about $8.50 - $9.00 for
"Home Delivery", maybe $5 to $6 "Ground". Having said that, I usually
find FedEx Home Delivery to be less expensive than UPS Ground. Of
course this also depends on the business and what deal they have with
their shipper. Presumably OPGi is in a position to negotiate a good
rate.

The best deal for packages under 1 pound is USPS Priority Mail at
$4.60 to anywhere in the U.S. in 2-3 business days. However, for the
shipper it is often less convenient to ship USPS. That rate does not
include tracking or the automatic $100 insurance that you get w/
UPS/FedEx, and it often requires sending somebody to stand in line at
the post office, and of course an employee's time costs money.

Still, $22 - $24 seems exorbitant for shipping a door latch, assuming
you live in the continental US.

Quoting Tom Rightler <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

across the country..about $11, yes that would be from NJ to CA which
is 5 days UPS Ground. To ship the same thing 1 day UPS Ground is about
$5.

ridiculous. I can say that because I am a shipping manager at work and I know

You can try Year One who is having a Thanksgiving Day only online 15% off
sale put TDBS in the promo code box or sale code box. Another one is
C.A.R.S. Inc. they make a lot of their own interior products. There are a
lot of other companies out there but I have had good luck with both of
these. To be honest I do not remember any of the restoration companies
having parts specifically for 4 door models. A lot of the parts from the 2
doors will be interchangeable with the four door. C.A.R.S., Inc. might be a
good one to look up and then phone and talk to, if they can't help you they
may be able to put you in the right direction. Good luck. Hope this helps.

The wheel opening and rocker trim is the same as an SS except for the rear

I had mine straightened and polished a few years ago. You could try
looking locally for someone specializing in stainless steel trim. If
you don't have any luck, I have seen some shops recommended on Team

you guys.
My present frame off is my 69 convertible SS, but 4
years ago I did a complete restoration on a Plymouth
Superbird. For the last year I have been trying to get
in touch with Richard Petty who of course made the car
famous in nascar in 1970.
It finally happened and that day was today. I met up
with him at his museum, and he was a pleasant and
great person, of course he had the big cowboy hat,
dark sunglasses and cowboy boots, typical Petty, he
spoke to me about his early racing years, and he
signed my dash. Now my car is complete.
I visited the museum while I was there, lots of great
stuff.
What a good day this was, thank you guys for letting
me share this with the group..

Thanks fro the complement, Dan. I live in Texarkana, TX. The wife and I
will be driving over Friday afternoon.

I do plan on entering the El Camino. It has a 350 Crate, Dyno'ed at 319
Horses. Finished a 3 1/2 year complete frame-off early this year. It's done
well in several small area shows. I don't expect to do much at Goodguys,
but I'm exciting about showing it.

I started on a '67 Chevelle SS Convertible in May. It will be the Wife's
car. Where do you live?

Need some advice on brakes.Second time out last April, my brakes failed
on my '69 Chevelle. Had a repair shop that I have delt with in the past and was
very satisified with their work look at and make the repairs. The master
cylinder was replaced as well as the rear shoes and rebuild the rear wheel
cylinders . Checked the front discs and they were fine . Brakes were working
fine until yesterday...brake pedal went to the floor and the brake lite came on
. Good thing this happened in my driveway and not on the road like the last
time the brakes failed . Put the car back in the garage and checked the brake
fluid level and it fine, about a 1/4" fom the top. The brake job has less then
1000 miles on it. Any ideas went could have happened ? Could it be the vacuum
booster?

2006-02-20 Thread Karl Groves
Pete -

In light of what you said below, I agree with the others who've mentioned
the MC.

As for my project - I've gotten the entire front end disassembled, and the
engine & trans out of the car. I discovered that the rear IS a 12-bolt posi,
which makes me happy.

Interior is almost totally out of the car, too, with exception to the dash
and the rear package tray stuff.

Next step is getting a donor roof and welding that on. Then I can take the
body off the frame and do some work with that before doing the body work.

I'm thinking that paint & body will be done sometime this fall. The cold
weather has been setting me back.

I'll post some pics on the blog soon. Thanks!

2006-02-20 Thread Peter Hnat

I'll see what the repair has to say. My wife is glad the brakes failed in the
driveway too, just getting ready to take the car for a ride. The first time
they failed, she turned a ghost white and it took sometime before she would go
for a ride in the car after the brakes were fixed! Thanks for all the help!

Pete, I have to agree with Shawn that the MC is at fault here. I was going to
mention that there might be air in the line, but if the car was sitting for any
length of time then the air could have made it's way back up the line and into
the MC therefore "bleeding" themselves of any air. Even new MC's have been
known to fail. Like someone earlier said in this thread "s**t happens"
sometimes. They are machanical and they will fail. I'm glad for you that it
failed in your driveway and not on the highway which would increase the "pucker
factor" drastically.

2006-02-20 Thread Peter Hnat
As far as I can tell, there are no aftermarket parts on/in the brake system .
The car came from the factory with disc brakes on the front and drums on the
rear .I don't think any modifications were made to the brake system by any of
the previous owners and the repair shop didn't say they found any
modifications. I would hope if they found any modifications they would have
told me.I'm going to call the repair shop and see if there is any warranty on
the master cylinder.

How's work coming along on your Chevelle, Karl? Any updates / pictures ?

No signs of leaks anywhere? I'm assuming this is a dual master cylinder ?
If it is you should of had some brake. Sounds like  master cylinder
failure to me.

More than likely your "new" rebuilt master cylinder is kaput. I wouldn't say
it's the fault of the guy who did your brakes, it's just one of those "s**t
happens" things.

Need some advice on brakes.Second time out last April, my brakes
failed on my '69 Chevelle. Had a repair shop that I have delt with in the

The master cylinder was replaced as well as the rear shoes and rebuild the
rear wheel cylinders . Checked the front discs and they were fine . Brakes
were working fine until yesterday...brake pedal went to the floor and the
brake lite came on . Good thing this happened in my driveway and not on the

brake job has less then 1000 miles on it. Any ideas went could have happened
? Could it be the vacuum booster?

Pete,
I know you said they replaced the master cylinder, but with them
going to the floor and no sign of brake fluid on the ground (and a
mostly full MC) It pretty much has to be the master cylinder. I had
the same thing happen to my '69 when I was in college... it's truly
terrifying.

Can you get the brakes to 'pump up' if you pump on the pedal?
