Policy routing

2000-06-23 Thread Evans Peake

I've been thinking of using policy routing to handle some "special"
situations in my network. Since this is process switched (on my 7513) what
kind of performance hit should I expect? My route maps will most likely
only be for < 10 networks / destinations. I'll have a mix of standard and
extended ACL's for them. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Help: ISDN problem

2000-06-23 Thread Ken Yeo

Yes, I am in US. On the configuration sheet, it says Switch type 5ess. So I
used switch-type basic-5ess. ISDN autodetect also comes out with switch-type
basic-5ess. I will try NI-1.

You are correct, I almost screaming at the lady when I said I want only 2
SPIDs. However no one is paying attention yet.

Anyone knows how to troubleshoot SPID NOT SENT? Does that means SPID is sent
but not correct, or it is not being sent to terco switch at all?

TIA,
Ken.

Re: Retransmissions

2000-06-23 Thread Will

I'm trying to verify there is no problem. Another consulting company
evalauted one of our customer's large frame-relay networks. The only "fault"
they could find, (without ever touching the network like putting a sniffer
on it or even looking at the interface statistics) was that there was
probably lots of retransmission of packets taking place and that some form
of traffic shaping should be instituted. I'm trying to verify there is no
significant retransmission taking place. I've reset the counters and
monitored for DE packets and dropped packets. There are some DE packets and
very few dropped packets. I would think that only the dropped packets would
be retransmitted and if there are only 2-20 dropped packets over a 2 week
period, that that is NOT alot of retransmissions. Am I off base? I'd like to
prove this other company is just trying to find "something" to justify their
fee. Thanks Howard.

RE: any MRTG document?

2000-06-23 Thread Daniel Cotts

The ip address is a host address or host route. The subnet mask of
255.255.255.255 means that all bits of the ip address are significant. You
can create a static route to a specific computer.

ip unnumbered is used on serial links to conserve ip addresses. The
interface does not have an assigned ip address. It references the ip address
of another interface on the router.

IPSEC tunnel between 2 pix only works one way

2000-06-23 Thread Kevin Welch

I know this list is not for this type of post, but I figure since I am not
understanding the problem that it may be considered a learning question. And
to be honest my mind is fried and I dont think the problem is with the tunnel
as it worked in the lab before it was deployed but I have to admit I do
not know enough to say for certain any assistance would be appreciated.

That being said, let me describe the problem.

I am attempting a IPSEC tunnel over the Internet between two pix boxes running
5.1(1). Lets call the boxes clientpix and colopix, now when these boxes are
out in the field they are making a SA to each ohter. From clientpix, I can
both send and receive icmp requests as well as other network traffic. From
the colopix I cannot ping or access any device on the clean side clientpix.

My connectivity diagram looks something like this:

(HostA) --- (coloPix) ---(Internet) --- (clientPix) --- (HostB)

I have connectivity between HostA and colopix.
I also have connectivity between hostb and clientpix.
I also have connectivity from the dirty side of colopix to the dirty side of
clientpix.
I have connectivity from the dirty side of clientpix to the dirty side of
colopix.
I have conenctivity from the clean side of clientpix to the clean side of
colopix
I DO NOT have connectivity from the clean side of clientpix to the clean side
of colopix
I can ping/telnet/whatever from hostB to hostA
I CANNOT ping/telnet/whatever from hostA to hostB

First my speculation then the configs... It almost seems like there is a
firewall/ACL that is only allowing conenctions established from one side.

I tested this configuration in a lab environment with 2 hosts and 2 pix boxen
seperated by one router just doing default routing and everything worked fine.
Here are the configs from each Pix box.

// This is the config from coloPix
// This is the PIX that cannot initiate a session

Re: Challenge Question

2000-06-23 Thread Paul Borghese

First off, Please do not CC: any other discussion groups. Just puts more
work on the server.

The first packet will go to the router (assuming it is being used as a
default gateway). The router will then send an ICMP Redirect message
directing any subsequent packets directly to P2. So after the redirect
message is received, the PC1 should send any additional packets to PC2.

Of course this is assuming that the PC's have an operating system that
understands and supports ICMP redirect messages.

I get it and just know there are DNS clients will send broadcast to locate DNS
Server for resolving queries. Before I don't know there exists such
implementation. The working environment to me is so ordered that I have no
this experience client will broadcast DNS query. All clients either have their
server apointed or failure at all.

/16... If you obtain a /24 which is summarised by your primary ISP as a
/16 or /20 then you will not be blackholed from any part of the net. Check
out http://www.nanog.org/ for filtering policies imposed by some ISP's...

This does not make sense because the mask is wrong.
ip unnumbered means that using, let say, E0's ip address on S0 in order to
save ip address space.

Re: 2 subnets in 1 vlan

2000-06-23 Thread John Neiberger

Not really. By definition, a VLAN is a separate broadcast domain and a
separate subnet. Communication between VLANs requires a routing process.
Trying to place two separate subnets in the same VLAN defeats the purpose of
having a VLAN in the first place, and it's going to screw up your routing.
I'm not even sure you'd be able to do it.

If you have an external router doing your interVLAN routing for you, then I
suppose you could try a secondary IP address on the subinterface for that
VLAN. I don't even know if that's possible, and even if it is, I'm sure it
opens up an entire separate can of worms.

I suggest doing it right from the beginning: keep each subnet in its own
VLAN.

However the second B-channel is having problem. I enable debug isdn q931 and

I will try your suggestion tomorrow and see what'll happen.

How to advertise my small backbone to Internet?

2000-06-23 Thread Roger Lu

Hello,

I am working to setup a network backbone across US and Asia total 8
different countries with one POP in each country. These 9 POPs are connected
to local ISP to Internet. We plan to connect all these 9 POPs through lease
line to become a backbone. The idea is that when a Internet user tries
access our service which is located at another country, we want the traffic
goes to the nearest POP, then go through the backbone and reach the
destination.

My original plan was to get PI (provider independent) IP space and ASN from
ARIN, and negotiate transit agreement with different ISP to advertise our
own route by using BGP). Now I received a response from ARIN which states my
application for PI IP space is not
qualified ( most likely is because my current IP usage is only includes
about 100 notes). I wonder whether I can use 24 bit IP subnet from one of my
ISP (the IP space now is provider dependent IP space) and advertise it
through BGP to other ISP. Will ISP will filter out the advertisement? Or
there is other way to accomplish this project?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Roger

CCNP1/CCNP2 and Exam Objectives

2000-06-23 Thread Asim Kamran

Dear Gurus,
While going through the exam objectives of CCNP 2.0, I have found that the
track almost resembles CCNP 1.0. The only difference is the introduction of
new technology and products.
What are your opinions if one starts CCNP 2.0 track by using the available
material of CCNP 1.0 and fulfill the remaining objectives by using technical
docs/details at different web sites ??
What are the chances of going through flying colors with this option???

Thanks in advance,

Re: TFTP Problem

2000-06-23 Thread Johnny Dedon

You do not have to set your default gateway to the address of the TFTP
server. You should set your default gateway to the address of a router that
resides on the same network segment as your PC is located. You may want to
check the spelling of the file ie look for spaces or make sure the extension
is correct. You may also want to try putting the file into a directory by
itself. The Cisco tftp server has problems sometime timing out when there
are more than one file in the directory.
The last suggestion I have is to try another tftp server such as teh 3com
tftp server.

RE: Link Flapping

2000-06-23 Thread Stull, Cory

Because of the level of the exam being studied for here I'm geussing that
its not referring to BGP, although it could be.. it sounds more like they
may be refferring to this...

This is an exerpt from the Cisco Press ACRC book. page 197

OSPF

Sometimes a link, such as a serial line, will go up and down rapidly (called
flapping), or a link-state change may affect another series of links. In
these situations, a series of LSUs could be generated, which would cause
routers to repeatedly recompute a new routing table. This flapping could be
so serious that the routers would never converge (exchange). To minimize
this problem, each time an LSU is received, the router waits for a period of
time before recalculating its routing table. The SPF HOLDTIME command was
added to the Cisco IOS software to prevent routers from computing a new
routing table until 10 seconds (default) after a route change...

I never came across this terminology either until I was reading some notes
on the sitamoht website. This an excerpt from the sitamoht site
Route dampening is a BGP feature designed to minimize the propagation of
flapping routes across an internetwork. A route is considered to be flapping

when it is repeatedly available, then unavailable, then available, then
unavailable, and so on.
A route that is flapping receives a penalty of 1000 for each flap. When the
accumulated penalty reaches a configurable limit, BGP suppresses
advertisement of the route even if the route is up. The accumulated penalty
is decremented by the half-life time. When the accumulated penalty is less
than the reuse limit, the route is advertised again (if it is still up).

accumulated penalty reaches a configurable limit, BGP suppresses
advertisement of the route even if the route is up. The accumulated penalty
is decremented by the half-life time. When the accumulated penalty is less
than the reuse limit, the route is advertised again (if it is still up).

Re: NAT using Windows 2000 Server

2000-06-23 Thread Tia Crawford

Ok you need to make sure you have Routing and Remote Access installed. You
also need to have DHCP installed. Then you need to configure it through the
RRAS applet icon under administrative tools. when you first start it it
opens a wizard go ahead and try to put as much as you can in to it but I
don't remember the dialog to the wizard. once in the MMC RRAS tool look
under routing interfaces and check to make sure you see both of your
Interfaces. I would make sure they are labeled well so you know wich one is
outside and inside. then click on the ip routing icon, then the general icon
under it. then right click in the open space under your interfaces, you
should see a menu with add new routing protocal click it and then select
network address translation and put the interfaces when it askes you. now
there is a very easy way to do this also but you can't use any other
gateways in your home network. that is click the properties of your outside
network card, under network neighborhood and then select internet connection
sharing. once you are have done that it will all be automatic. feel free to
right back if you need more help...

Re: How far by self study?

2000-06-23 Thread Russell Lusignan

I have my CCNP and I never attended any Cisco or related training. I bought
Cisco Press books and other related books and since I work with the products
full time it helped quite a bit. If your going to do self study for your
certification, make sure you have a lab readily available to you. CCNA was
passable without actually using a router/switch, but CCNP requires
experience

Hope that helps

Re:IP Addressing

2000-06-23 Thread Kishor Bhagwat

hello,
This refers to your other
mail "ip and subnet" alsoa few observations:
Do u really have so many hosts on each floor that u need to
choose a /16 subnet?

If not, then this is a wasteful use of Ip
address space.
I hope u have concluded that floor-wise
subnetting is the best option after studying ur traffic pattern.
The easiest thing for u would be to trash this
addresing scheme, and go for a completely new scheme..
I suggest :
All routers and servers on 192.168.1.0/24.(of course, i'm
totally ignoring your assigned IP from the ISP :-) )
1st Floor : all hosts on 192.168.2.0/24
2nd Floor : all on 192.168.3.0/24
3rd  Floor : all on 192.168.4.0/24 and so on
And to make things easier administratively, mebbe u could just
use dynamic addressing floor-wise

kishor

Hi one and all,

RE: RJ45 & RJ48 difference

2000-06-23 Thread Jorge Rodriguez

RJ48 also shown as RJ48X and RJ48S are used for Digital Circuits.

RJ48X Jack is used for either T1 or PRI. Telecom people work with this kind
of stuff. RJ48 is a termination Jack also known
as NIU ( Network Interface Unit ) or SmartJack.
RJ48S Jack term is where your chanalized T1 are terminated, such as 56k
circuits, 64k circuits or DS0 and so forth.

For example, the T1 RJ48x Jack where the service provider terminates the
circuit has 8 connectors such as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8
which connectors 1,2,4,5 are where the coper pairs will be connected and the
T1 or PRI terminated. Connector 1 takes wite/blue pair, connector 2 connects
the brown/white pair, connector 4 takes white/orange, and connector 5
takes orange/white pairs. This layout is design for digital circuit
signaling. But if you realy look at this RJ48 is just a term and by hearing
this term you know that is a telecom term.

The RJ45 is a connector term design for Ethernet Networks where four pair
coper are used, the signaling on RJ45 10baseT Ethernet uses only two pairs
1,2,3, and 6. I don't know on top of my head the two pairs signaling specs.

Hope this clarifies your question

Hi,

What is the difference between an RJ45 connector as used on 10Bt and an
RJ48

They both appear to be the same 8 pin idc connector.

ssh through NAT will work fine. If you're going out, no problem. RSA
auth, and password auth work fine. Coming in, you'll have to have a
static address that maps to an IP of a host running sshd open on port
22, of course..

Cisco Internetworking with Microsoft

2000-06-23 Thread Wenderson . Duarte

This is a little network problem, but I can not make it work.
There are two different subnets, each one with a cisco router running only
IP. Between them, there is a point to point serial connection. The IP
connectivity between the two networks is OK.
In each network, there is a NT server (each one with a different domain
name), some NT workstations, and Win95/98 wkts..
In each network, the NT server is configured with WINS service and local
DHCP service.
In one network, the users are working in a Domain, and in the other
network, users are working only in a Workgroup (without login in the Domain).
>From the first network (users in Domain), I can not browse the workstation of
the other side. From the second network (users in a Workgroup), I can browse the
workstations of the other site using the Network Neighborhood..
I want to enable all the PCs (from both networks) to browse all the PCs
from both networks (using the Network Neighborhood) without changing too much my
topology (ie. estabilishing domain trust relationships).. Does anyone have an
ideia about this problem?

Tks and best rgds.

How can I get a Cisco router to chop up large packets of one protocol type
(say FTP) coming in on a LAN interface so that smaller packets of some
other, higher-priority protocol can be interleaved on an outgoing WAN
interface that they share?

I think that I'll need this to give a more granular control while using
custom or WPC queuing.
Otherwise small high-priority packets could get stuck behind large
low-priorty packets.

Ez.

Re: RJ45 & RJ48 difference

2000-06-23 Thread woody

Same connector, different pinnings for TX/RX etc... Cat 5 patch cables seem
to work OK for both as signal levels are not too different.
