RE: OSPF On Demand Circuit

2000-07-23 Thread jenny . mcleod

OK, the thread's a bit dead now, but for anyone who's interested, Rick and I had
a bit of an offline discussion on this one. Thought it might be of interest to
some (possibly even the original poster...)

Re: Masters degrees / distance learning

2000-07-23 Thread NHK

Lauren,

I'm working on my MSc in IT Management over here in Malaysia at one of the
IT college that is backup by
the Uni of Staffordshire. This might still consider as distance learning
which tooks 2 years to complete (normally
1 year full time at Staffordshire) with 8 modules and 1 thesis. To be frank
there are nothing technical in MSc even if
you are taking the software module, they are purely into the management.
So what is this master thingy to you?

Hiya,

Ive been thinking about the Masters Degree thing - I have a BSc in
Computing (communications and Networks). Im wondering about doing a
masters degree by distance learning. My old university, Sheffield
Hallam in the UK does a distance learning "enterrprise networks" masters
degree thats accredited by Novell, but having spent 4 years there
already, and having had disagreements with staff members etc, I was
wondering what other degrees people might have found or taken by
distance learning?

Re: Passed CCDP

2000-07-23 Thread Bharat Suneja

Congragulations Tim!

Yes, once you achieve a milestone, it's not as exciting any more... :-) The
excitement lasts all of 2 days, maybe 3 if you've scored real good. I think
the real excitement comes if you get a better job based on your
certifications, if you get better projects because of your certifications,
if you get a raise because of those certifications. Certifications in
themselves probably aren't the goal - and we always tend to say - what next
?? :-)

I just finished my CCNA. Excited for a couple of days. Now thinking - what
next ? CCDA, CCNP, CCIE Checkpoint... :-)

RE: ISDN interface problem

2000-07-23 Thread jenny . mcleod

Not sure (I haven't used BRI interfaces much), but I seem to remember that if an
ISDN interface is configured as a backup interface, it will be in standby mode
and cannot be used for anything else.
Is your BRI configured as a backup interface? If so, what happens when the main
link is brought down?
Can anyone confirm or deny my hazy memory?

I also seem to remember from my studies awhile back, that you have to reboot
the router when changing the ISDN switch type to make the change take
effect. Something like you'll see the change in the config, but the router
won't recognize it until the reboot. Have you tried that?It rather
resembles a Microsoft product in this regard!  :-}

Maybe posting a "show config" would help determine why BRI0/0 is in standby
mode.

BTW Carrier Transitions are incremented each time your "call" changes state.
For example, when an active call gets disconnected (from timeout, bad
hardware, etc.), that activity will increment the Carrier Transition count
by one. If you have DDR/BOD setup, this is a pretty typical thing. If not,
then you either need to make a config change or you might have bad hardware
somewhere in the line.

Hi Larry,

thanks for your answer.
What exactly do you mean by enabling the interface first ?
My concern is that I do not see any lit LEDs on the interface. Can you tell
me what a status of standby/down means ? How can I get the interface in
up/up (spoofing) status ? Also, what do the carrier transitions mean ?
I include the output from the sh int command:

Ener_Erkath#sh int bri0/0
BRI0/0 is standby mode, line protocol is down
  Hardware is PQUICC BRI
  Internet address is 10.90.1.70/30
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 64 Kbit, DLY 2 usec, rely 255/255, load 1/255
  Encapsulation PPP, loopback not set
Last input never, output never, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Input queue: 0/75/0 (size/max/drops); Total output drops: 0
  Queueing strategy: weighted fair
  Output queue: 0/1000/64/0 (size/max total/threshold/drops)
 Conversations 0/0/256 (active/max active/max total)
 Reserved Conversations 0/0 (allocated/max allocated)
  5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
  5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
0 packets input, 0 bytes, 0 no buffer
 Received 0 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles

Re: Masters degrees / distance learning

2000-07-23 Thread whatshakin

I'd like to interject a little if I may. Having all cert related
credentials will certainly open the doors to decent money and better and
better opportunities in the IT related field. All certs and no degree
however, (in most cases) is probably going to limit one's potential for
growth opportunities. To expound on his further, having a degree and
numerous certifications in the same discipline (IT in this case) could also
hamper ones long term potential growth opportunities! I am referring to the
possibility of moving into management positions in this case. Here the lack
of business related skills could draw many obstacles to which overcoming
them may prove difficult. It seems logical that a combination of both
technical and business skills/certs will provide one with the best platform
onto which you could build a solid career. Unfortunately, with bachelor
degree's becoming almost a commodity these days, you may soon need to set
yourself above the crowd with a graduate degree and high level certs of
sorts. I dare say the folks with a MBA and CCIE will soon find themselves
running the businesses of tomorrow.

RE: Passed CCDP

2000-07-23 Thread Mooney Drew-DMOONEY1

Congrats Timothy!

I have a question or two about the DA/DP track vice the CA/CP track.

It seems to me that CCDA is a useful, yet seemingly quick and dirty
certification to obtain. The groundwork for it - at first glance at least -
looks like a bit of a departure from that involved with the CCNA Routing &
Switching curricula.

So I was considering going after CCNA and CCDA in order to put a bit more
depth and breadth into my system/product knowledge and certifications, then
proceeding to CCNP .

It doesn't seem though, to make much sense to go after CCDP as well, because
of the apparent overlap between the CCNP and CCDP certification paths.

Is this a reasonable set of assumptions? Does anyone see any value [other
than intellectual curiosity, etc.] in obtaining concurrent DP / NP certs?
Are the two paths, beyond a certain point of expertise or career
specialization, mutually exclusive in any way? Highly complementary? Mildly
so?

Comments/Feedback greatly appreciated!

Subject: Passed CCDP

I just thought I would drop a quick note to let the group know that I passed
CID on Friday gaining me my CCDP.
I started pursuing this certification earlier this year when I took a new
job. Now that I have passed, I don't have the excitement that I thought I
would have. Don't get me wrong, I am very excited and relieved that I am
past it now. The problem is that I don't have anyone close to share the
excitement with. My wife was happy for me but she, as well as the rest of my
family, doesn't really understand what I have accomplished.
Does anyone else feel similar?

Anywhoo, here is my path to CCDP.
I took the CCDP 2.0 path.
Jan 2000 - Passed BCMSN beta. I studied CLSC course book a little. Not much
help for this test. I did have lots of hands on including 29xx and 5500
switches. Know spanning tree, Cisco multicast, MLS, VTP, ISL etc.

April 2000 - Passed DCN test for CCDA. I studied DCN CD. Not to difficult.

June 2000 - Passed BCSN. I studied the Cisco Press ACRC book. Skip WAN, IPX
and AppleTalk stuff. Read Cisco's BGP tutorial on CCO. Just search on "BGP
TUTORIAL". Know OSPF and EIGRP.

June 2000 - Passed BCRAN. The group said this was the easiest but I thought
it was fairly difficult. I used Cisco Press BCRAN book.

July 2000 - Passed CID. This was also difficult. I used the Cisco Press CID
book. Study Cisco's ATM product guide.
Know specs on ATM gear.

I hope to take CIT in August. I may take this class just because the hands
on will be good practice for CCIE.

Thanks to the group for all of your posts.

Works with the IGP. Kewl. Also confirmed this in Halabi's book as well.

RE: Masters degrees / distance learning

2000-07-23 Thread John Robert

Hi,
About distance learning...you can search through www.yahoo.com under
education categories. It has pretty good list of all distance learning
colleges and universiteis.
I got information for Barrington University but not sure yet if I will start
with them. But they have pretty good list of classes and also some friends
reccommended me checking it out. Here is address: www.barrington.edu
You can e-mail them to get a free catalog.

good luck!

IBGP and multiple hops through IGP

2000-07-23 Thread JulianCharlene

G-day 'groupstudy.cisco' newsgroup. Here is a questions I hope you folks
can answer.

Here is a leg of our network in beautiful ASCII art:

7206(1)==7206(2)==12012

The 12012 is running E/I-BGP and I want to peer with the 7206(1) router. I
do not want to run IBGP and a RR on 7206(2) until I upgrade the memory (only
32 megs right now) and only have IGP's on it at the moment.

Does IBGP set the TTL to 1 like EBGP? Or does it simply use the IGP to
route accordingly? Since there is no 'ibgp-multihop #' command I am hoping
it uses the IGP to route with a higher TTL.

I am setting this up now and may actually answer my own question in a matter
of minutes but if someone can expand on this it would be appreciated. I
will post what happens.

Regards,

Julian

Re: Masters degrees / distance learning

2000-07-23 Thread JohnMail

TTFN:

Good to see that someone believe in the process of education and is prepared
to go beyond MCSE/CNE/CCxx. My guess is that the vast majority of people
with "Certs only", plan to do network configuration type stuff for a very
long time to come.

At some stage my plan is to be able to effectively manage the people doing
the "GRUNT" work - pardon the term. And this is where a graduate degree
will enable me to compete for technical (or business) managerial positions.
The higher levels of formal education will enable to do much than mere
networking stuff. I am sure you want to be able to WRITE effectively and
perfect your PRESENTATION skills.

So far I have completed one graduate program - MBA. I also have MCSE and
CCNA. I am currently working on MCSE (2000) and CCDA/CCNP. I do this
because learning is fun to me.

Go for Gold!

Ohit pings just fine. I am just trying a little experiment. You
know...fix it
up, tear it down, fix it up, tear it down - ad nauseum. Anyway - it goes
something
like this. I have a Linksys (I know...don't say it) Broadband
Router/Switch that
my internal LAN accesses the internet through. I have a laptop that is
connected
to a 3com hub. Also connected to that hub is the e0 interface of a
2501. On the
s0 interface of the 2501, it is connected through a DCE/DTE cable to the s0
interface of a 2503 (following me so far?). The e0 interface of the 2503
is connected
to a switch port on the Linksys Router/Switch. I can ping the Linksys from
the first PC
(traveling through three different networks and across the Frame-Relay link
with no problems.
I just can't get beyond that into the WAN. Also, I can't ping another PC
plugged into the Linksys
switch either. I know this is probably worded very confusingly but I just
thought that
maybe one of my other fine associates out there had experienced something
similar.

Thanks again guys and gals,
Roman

BCMSN question

2000-07-23 Thread Helena LOW

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could tell me how indepth we need to know the
material in the Cisco press book of BCMSN? When I was studying for my
CCNA, I mostly used Todd's book which was enough, but I did take a look at
the Cisco Press book for CCNA and it was really indepth..I was wondering
if this is the case for the BCMSN book? Like would we need to know the
fields of ISL encapsulation?

Thanks
Helena

Re: Passed CCNA 640-407

2000-07-23 Thread Avran

I took the CCNA 640-407 and passed it. Cisco meant it when they said it is
random set of questions. I suggest that you read the following at east
once.

* WAN (especially Frame Relay & ISDN)
* Routing Protocols
* CLI commands (Make sure you know what context you are in when entering any
commands. E.g.. testrouterA> or testrouterA# or or testrouterA(config) etc.

You will do fine. Odom's book is excellent! Lamelle has done a fair job

Hi Avran,

I wonder if you could provide me links of Nova and Webster. BTW, are these

Re: Cisco CCIE All-in-one Lab Study Guide

if you're taking the exam in (4) weeks and you plan on using that this late
in the game, FORGET it! Go and buy Marc Russell's labs
(www.ccbootcamp.com). That's what I used to pass the CCIE exam!!!

The All-in-one Lab Study Guide is great for a starting point (3-6 months
prior to the lab exam). After that, you need some REAL labs!

RE: Cisco and the Montgomery GI Bill

2000-07-23 Thread Aaron K. Dixon

I did some checking on the va web-site and it appears that this is feasible.

http://www.gibill.va.gov/education/FAQ_edu.htm#eleven

Follow the link to the FAQ page where you will see:

Q. May I use VA education benefits for short-term high-cost programs, such
as Novell and Microsoft certification?

A. Yes, if the program has been approved for VA purposes.

You need to contact the training provider or the VA to find out if it's
approved. The number for the VA is 888-442-4551.

Unfortunately, if you read on you will see that they cover very little cost.
If you go full-time for a week they give you the full time rate for one
week. I think the full time rate for a month is around $500 so that would
only cover about $125 for a one-week course which typically costs $2000 or
more.

Aaron K. Dixon

Good question, I have never heard of it. However I think it would work if
the institution(i.e. School/College/University) was/is an accredited
educational institute. Check with the VA reps at the your local JCs and
Universities/Colleges. Some are Cisco Academies as well.

Yes indeed! Community Colleges with Cisco Networking Academies are
expanding. This year some are starting/offering CCNP programs starting with
ACRC. I'm registering tomorrow for the fall semester, at a college
15 miles away. Only downside is you must have completed the first four
modules (two a semester) or have attained the CCNA certification. Ten
routers and two switches, for three months, for $145...WOOHOOO!!! Four hours
college credit also.
ACRC...Yes I know. I beleive they said they would work off of notes or
something. This ought to be good!? :>)

Well, that's better than nothing I guess. I guess GI Bill would be best
to use on like 4 "college courses" in advanced networking that lasted a
semestero well, always trying to make those goverment dollars
work.

Now if you were "active duty" you could probably use TA to pay for your
courses.perhaps..

Cisco DHCP server question?

2000-07-23 Thread derek lewinson

I am replacing a 3com lanmodem with a 2620. The lanmodem currently operates
as a dchp server, providing
services to windows 9x/NT clients.

I have set up a 2620 as a dhcp server, but can't seem to get the server to
assign an address
to the client, except if I choose the 'renew' option in windows' WINIPCFG
utility.

Does anyone know whether this is because :

a) the router is not 'seeing' the initial dhcprequest packet?
b) MS Windows clients require a 'bootfile' on the dhcp server ?

Any help or redirection to an appropriate source would be helpful.

I have checked the cisco site, but can only find info on how to set up the
server,
not troubleshoot it.

Re: Stupid question...(no questions are stupid friend)

2000-07-23 Thread Roman

The frame-relay portion is only between the two cisco routers. The linksys
router is tied to the e0 port of one of them. Actually, I have that linksys
router/switch functioning only as a gateway/switch. It does no routing per se.
Just shoves everything not local out the WAN port and that's about it. I
was playing
a bit with a sniffer and I noticed that the ping will travel from one pc,
through the two
cisco routers running FR, out the e0 port of the second, to the switch, and
the too the
second PC. That pc, replies to the echo but it never makes it back to the
original PC.

Grrr... :)

I think it will be easier to go through the archives if our posts were titled
properly. It definately is irritating to see the same questions being asked over
and over again but I think its unfair to blame anyone for asking if it will take
a whole day to sift thru the archive and still not find what you were looking
for even if it was there.

just helping to make the list more useful.

Cyberhead,

Try reading Cisco's IDG (Internetwork Design Guide)
You can find it at http://www.gdd.net/cisco

Then look under the CCDA section.

Re: Stupid question..

2000-07-23 Thread Circusnuts

You need a crossover to
"talk" NIC to E0.  The only time you would use a patch cable, is when
you connect the router/ PC to a switch/ hub.  I "personally" know when
to use each cable (I even know the pinouts), but I'm not sure if I
could clearly explain to you why this is.  I can promise you this, knowing
the engineering of that Ethernet transceiver & it's data exchange on that
RJ45 pinout will not change the paycheck you get this Friday :-)

Good Luck

RE: Stupid question..

2000-07-23 Thread Pavel . Bulgakov

You must use a "straight" cable if you're connecting pc/router/etc. to a
hub/switch. And you definetely must use a "crossed-over" cable to connect a
pc/router to another pc/router and hub/switch to another hub/switch. Some
hubs/switches/routers may let you change manually the role of the port
(MDI-X or MDI) so it becomes "crossed" internally and you may use a
"straight" cable where the crossed one needed. Thus, on some devices it is
possible to change the port settings and to use a straight cable to connect
hub to hub and pc/router to router.

In your case, 2500 series router's ethernet port does not support this
feature and the solution to your problem is to use a crossed-over cable.

Roman,
Just buy a cheap 5 port hub for this. That will work. PC to hub, and hub
to router. Also, you dont need a PC to check if ether will get through the
link. Just create a ping on router A, and when it asks for the source, put
the address for etherO. For example:

RouterA#ping
IP address: (routerB's ether, or whatever)
Source address: (etherO's address)

It goes something like that...Hope it helps,

Each guy paid $9.

There is no extra dollar. The manager accepts $30, gives back $3 in change,
keeps $2 for himself, and pays the hotel $25 for the room. 3 + 2 + 25 = 30

The "$27 + $2 = $29" is the faulty logic. The $27 is the sum of the room
cost and the $2 skimming by the crooked manager. The three guys each got
$1 in change which needs to ba added to this to arrive at the original $30.

I don't know if there is a name for this particular riddle.

Does anyone know the math the name of the math puzzler that goes like this:

3 guys go to a hotel, the manager says the room is $30. Each guy puts in $10
then go to sleep.

The next manager decides the room is really only $25, but decides to keep $2
for himself.

He then hands each guy back $1 each.

The Question is if each guy paid $9 for the room, and 3*9=27 +2(the manager
took) what happens to the other dollar, since 27+2=$29?

I only ask since I belive this is a math riddle and wanted to know the name.

I think my next step it to work towards an Electrical Engineering degree.
GA Tech has a masters in Electrical Engineer concentrating on

Master Degree?

2000-07-23 Thread John Robert

Hi,

I have my B.A in Computer Information System, A+, MCSE, CCNA and CCNP, but
still not satisfied. I have seen different job postings that required master
degrees and I have sort of desire to go for it too.
So, my question from group is: If we are going toward CCIE and also want to
get masters, what major to choose and which universtiy to go for?
I am in New York City and have searched different universities's web sites.
I have seen nothing interesting that I want to go for there. If I check
courses under diff Computer related master degrees, some courses are same
old that I have already finished in B.A. or they are so mixed that I don't
know what I will be specializing in.
Has anyone gone through same problem or doing masters (in what subjects)?
Any suggestions that where I should look for?

Thanks in advance!
John
