JH: Might you mean CIR? Committed information rate?

JMcL: It might be a regional term. Around here, EIR (Excess Information Rate)
refers to the amount of bandwidth available 'above' the CIR. So if you have an
access speed of 256K at one end of a PVC and 512K at the other end, and a CIR of
64K between them, then your EIR for the PVC will be 192K (the difference between
the smallest access speed and the CIR).

You can send up to the CIR without getting any traffic marked Discard Eligible
(DE). You can then send up to the EIR in addition to that, but that traffic
will be marked DE - i.e. it will be dropped first if there is congestion in the
network.

Re: Help with Debug ip packet

2000-08-03 Thread JEK

Your correct on the "g = ateway " "s = ource" "d = estination".
the len is the size of the packet.Depending on where the packet
will go will depend on your routing protocol.Your routing table
and if you have any loops in the network or not.So your source
and destination will rely on those.Hope this helps.

Cat6506 and Cat3548

2000-08-03 Thread Saravana Kumar

Hi,

I am trying to establish dot1q trunking between Cat6506 and Cat3548 switches. As soon
as I connect these switches using a cross-over cable, the C3548 switch does not
recognise the packets coming from C6506.

First, I tried to configure ISL trunking in the Cat3548 switch using "switchport trunk
encapsulation isl" command in the interface configuration mode, it accepted the
command silently (mean without any error). But the line is missing in the
running-configuration. Note: Cat3548 is using IOS based software. Both the switches
are using the latest software versions.

How can I solve this issue?

Thanks in advance,

Hi John,

you won't loose image that is already in IOS. But, when you
boot router you will have two partitions. You will notice in
config

partition flash 2 8 8

To make it one 16 MB partition you should go into boot-helper
IOS (config-register 0x2101), then delete flash, make it one
partition, and after that load new IOS. Before reloading router,
set config register to 0x2102.

what is the function of the E1/T1 port on the router?

2000-08-03 Thread Sim, CT (Chee Tong)

Dear Friends,

Thank for your valuable information,

I had a question on the E1/T1 conroller port? Previously we have a project
connecting for VoIP, we connect the E1/T1 port of 3810 router to the PABX
and serial port to the WAN

My question

1)What is the difference between E1/T1 controller port and the serial port?
Do E1 need ip address to be configured?

2)Can we use E1 controller to connect to the internet service provider?

3)I heard of E1 link (2M) and T1 link (1.544M) Does these two term related
to E1/T1 port of the router? That's mean if we want to have E1 link speed
we got to use E1/T1 port to connect? Is that true?? Then What I should do
if I need a E3 link

4)What router model got E1/T1 controller installed except 3810

Is this a circuit that has worked in the past and stopped, or a new turn-up?
The answer to this question can cause a different approach to
troubleshooting.

Assuming frame-relay encaps because you mentioned frame-relay in question
1...
>
> router A
> interface is up and protocol is down
> modem status is DCD=up DSR=up DTR=up RTS=up CTS=up

The physical circuit to the router is OK. It _probably_ is talking to the
frame-relay switch OK, especially if the circuit has worked in the past and
just quit. The DCD=up and CTS=up show that the physical layer is good, or
at least connected.

If "sho int" contains a line like:
LMI enq sent 209473, LMI stat recvd 209473, LMI upd recvd 0, DTE LMI up

then the "DTE LMI up" verifies that this router is good to the switch.

"sho frame pvc" should show the DLCI as USAGE = LOCAL and STATUS = ACTIVE
for the DLCI of the circuit between the two routers if everything is happy.
If the remote router is not happy, then you'll see STATUS = INACTIVE. If
the
PVC isn't built in the switch, you'll see STATUS = DELETED or nothing at
all for that DLCI if you're using inarp.
>
> but at the router B,
> the interface is down and protocol is down,
> the modem status is DCD=down DSR=up DTR=up RTS=up CTS=down.

This router or its CSU/DSU if external is not communicating with the
frame-relay switch. Look for trouble on the physical wiring to this
router. In the real world, this is almost always a telephone company
issue. In a lab, it could be a bad or miswired cable.

> What is likely the cause of the problem?

A tech at the telco closest to router B looped its NIU while mis-reading
a circuit ID trying to fix something else. (That's the most likely cause,
but don't expect to find it on the test.)

> Is that the modem of router B got
> problem or serial port of router B got problem or the link within the
> service provider got problem

If this is a previously working circuit, it's most likely a telco issue
between the frame-relay switch and router B. A loopback plug on the line
to the CSU (1-4, 2-5 for T1, 1-7, 2-8 for 56K) cusing DCD to go "up" will
isolate it.

Note: Telephone companies are notorious for blaming the customer and
looping the wrong circuit. Carry a loopback plug in your tool kit. When
telco claime "It's good to the NIU", plug your loopback plug into their
smartjack and ask them to run to it. Unplug it and see if the loop goes
down.

In the real world, if a circuit has been working fine for months or years
and suddenly quits, what has probably happened is that a telco tech, in
the process of troubleshooting something else, accidentally hopped on to
your circuit and put a smartjack in loopback. When you call in to report
the problem, they'll test things and knock down the loop that they put
up by mistake earlier. Then it will work again, and get closed out as
another "came clear while testing." The second most likely cause is that
someone clipped a butt-set on your data pair which wasn't documented
correctly, didn't hear dial tone, and swiped it for something else. This
takes longer to fix, but telco will still probably claim "came clear
while testing" even though they know better. A lot depends on the
competence
of your local telephone company.

Hint: If they are spending millions of dollars right now on a massive,
saturation TV ad campaign just to announce that they're changing their
name while under the threat of a labor strike, then perhaps they have their
priorities wrong.

RE: PPP Callback

2000-08-03 Thread Cuthbert Simalenga

It is simply a security feature for dial up accounts. The user dials into
the system and the system authenticates him, drops the connection then calls
the user back at a designated number.

So if someone else tried to dial into the system from a different location,
the system will accept the call, drop it then call the pre-configured number
-this is where security comes in,

Cisco Prerequisites

2000-08-03 Thread Adedapo Ola

Hello Everyone,
I have a couple of naive questions from
a c.e. student. I could'nt help noticing that everyone seemed to at least have
an MCSE before attempting the cisco route. Is this highly essential to
succeed?

I have always been more or less a command line nut,
hence Linux has always been a pass time hobby, so I wonder, would this
be somewhat similar?

Unfortunately, my networking knowledge is basically
at the bottom of the scale, since I am just at the ethernet level of networking
such as the setting up of multi-homed machines, etc, hence I have been trying
to learn all I can about basic networking, i.e. ,  hubs, bridges ,
switches,  cabling, etc, before actually purchasing a router.

Also, I have done a lot of helpdesk type work and
some hands on, but it's mostly been desktop related.

So, basically,to cut matters short, could
someone advise me on this path:

1) Mastery of Basic Networking
2) MCSE or (Routers and CCNA, etc)

Thank you
 Adedapo Ola, MCP

On another note, If I am permitted, I noticed
some folks were job hunting for cisco entry level. If it's at least experience
that's vital, here's a link for five Junior level cisco
job openings, I think it's through a recruiter
though, but, hey the experience is what matters.

Firstly, we would all need to know what routing protocols are in use here,
then what are the ip addresses of you and your partner. Secondly what type

Until then I and I expect no one else can answer your question.

I've setup a couple of sites using the BR342's. Pretty easy to do. They
are just bridges though so the two connecting sites will be on the same
subnet unless you hook one end into a separate vlan or something. Haven't
done the voice part though.

Modem not connected to con/aux port ?

2000-08-03 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I wonder if any of you know if there is a way to find out by looking at the
configuration of a router if there is a modem connected to the aux or
console port ? I have a router which should have a modem attached to it, but
when I try to dial in, I get a NO CARRIER response. I suspect that the cable
from the modem is not attached to the router, but I cannot ask anybody at
the site if that is really the case. Now I wonder if there is a way (maybe a
DEBUG command) to find out if there is physically anything connected to the
aux or console port ? I can TELNET to the router and access the
configuration.
Thanks for your help in advance !

RE: Conflicting answers

2000-08-03 Thread TKager

Flow control is a pretty broad term. Some could argue that this is a transport layer
function but in actual practice and implementation the question is right.
Bridges do not provide congestive feedback or flow control, but routers certainly can.

Here is just some food for thought:

The data link layer can provide flow control. In fact some switches employ a technique
called back pressure to throttle a client. This technique works by creating artificial
collisions, causing the sender to slow down transmission. This is typically done to
avoid a switch buffer overflow condition. If employing a connection oriented data
link, such as LLC2, there is an explicit mechanism available, RNR (Receiver Not
Ready), that provides flow control. Another good one is frame relay with it's use of
the BECN bit. There are probably many other examples.

In implementation, the network layer, specifically ICMP, allows an overwhelmed router
to send source quench messages when it is becoming congested. Again there are many
more exapmles.

There are session layer examples as well.

The point I am trying to make, is that there is often a distinction between the OSI
text book answer and the actual implementations. The OSI is a good guide and point of
reference, but very few protocols fall neatly into this cookie cutter, although they
are considered to predominantly reside at a particular layer.

RE: what is mean by EIR on the frame relay???

Typically indicates that the router is not sensing a Carrier Detect signal.

Generally can be attributed to a Telephone Company problem, faulty or
incorrect cabling, or a hardware failure in the DSU.

1)what is mean by EIR on the Frame relay? Can any one tell me?

2)If I found the link is up between two router,

router A
interface is up and protocol is down
modem status is DCD=up DSR=up DTR=up RTS=up CTS=up

but at the router B,
the interface is down and protocol is down,
the modem status is DCD=down DSR=up DTR=up RTS=up CTS=down.

What is likely the cause of the problem? Is that the modem of router B got

service provider got problem

Might you mean CIR? Committed information rate?

>

>

Hint: If they are spending millions of dollars right now on a massive,
saturation TV ad campaign just to announce that they're changing their
name while under the threat of a labor strike, then perhaps they have their
priorities wrong.

digits in half & each half is a mirror image, so 4 bits divided by 2 is 2,
and there are 4 possibilities in a 2-bit number.)

Maybe the wifes don't understand just like most of us men don't understand
the toilet seat lid up thingy.
Maybe cause we forget to acknowledge the work the wife performs behind the
scenes as we are miles away in our clouds.
I am sure to a point it becomes a slight form of jealousy as we take way
wife and family time ..
But even tho they may not say much to you . I am sure she brags about it
to her friends.

I overheard a conversation my wife had with one of her friends and it went
something like this..
Oh he works on networks and Cisco stuff and servers..
Cisco that the company that joins all the internet together.. ( maybe you
have to explain in very basic terms what routers do )
Sigh my kitchenette look like a computer store with cables and equipment all
over the place.
Heck no I don't touch anything. his mess his problem..
yes the money is great but sometimes he is never home but I am used to it
know.
it makes him happy and provides for the family so it's good.
he has worked very hard to get where he is so at least it's better than
race cars.
And he has his own money to buy stuff and at least he is home playing rather
than in a garage somewhere or driving all over the place.
the rest was woman talk
So the wifes do understand to a point

just as a side bar

I just asked my 7 yro old what i do for a job and he said a "computerist"
heh.
I asked did he know what a network was and he did not know .
So I asked him what the internet was and he says a bunch of servers.
So I tell OK so Daddy helps build the internet.
Ok says the 7 yro then you build servers ?
Think it's time for the kids to meet Mr. Ping and the network neighborhood

Congrats

Wow Susan, you really let Cisco know who's boss with that score!!! Great
job and I wish you luck with your mission. By the way, I was going to do the
BSCN next also but the CiscoPress book doesn't come out until October. You
may want to get the BCMSN out of the way, then when the BSCN comes out you
can hit that. Just a suggestion. Good luck Sue,

Re: Modem not connected to con/aux port ?

2000-08-03 Thread Dale Holmes

When and where do you get the "no carrier" message. That is typically
something you see in a terminal program when there is no phone connection to
the modem at YOUR end. In other words, you start the program, enter the
phone number to dial and initiate a connection - then within a second or two
you get the "no carrier" message. It means that your modem could not dial
out because it did not detect a carrier signal (dial tone). Can you dial out
to anyplace else?

If the modem at the remote end was up and simply was not connected to the
router, it seems to me that it would:

1. Ring
2. Answer
3. Negotiate
4. Leave you with no responses to your input

I'm not sure that "no carrier" is the message that you would see if the
remote modem did not have a connection to the remote router.

But then again - I COULD BE COMPLETELY WRONG!!!

RE: Workgroup across VLANs

2000-08-03 Thread Luong, David
Title: RE: Workgroup across VLANs

But
the question asked how one particular VLAN (ie. VLAN 20) is able to see all
PC's across 6 other vlans, an extended access-list won't do that since initially
VLAN 20 can only see PC's connected to its vlan. If VLAN 20 is able to see all
PC's across all vlans, then your solution would be correct in applying an
extended access-list. Therefore, how do you get VLAN 20 to be able to see PC's
in distributed VLANs?

Sorry, it is rather
"Multi-layer Switching".  It is a flow-based switching using the
capabilities of MSFC or a combination of high-end router and a CAT
switch supporting MLS.

MultiLayer Switching. MLS-SE and MLS-RP allow switching

RE: mls

2000-08-03 Thread Guyler, Rik [EESUS]

MLS refers to Multilayer Switching

MLS is the process whereby a switch works in conjunction with a router or
RSM (route switch module) to provide high-speed routed traffic. In simple
terms, the switch sends the initial traffic to the router to discover the
path needed for the destination, and then the switch takes over from there
without the router's assistance. This allows you to maintain routed
networks at switched speeds as the switch fabric, which is based in
hardware, will move traffic much faster than a router, which is based in
software.

Good luck!

RE: Modem not connected to con/aux port ?

2000-08-03 Thread Radford Dion

If you are able to do a reverse telnet to the modem then obviously the modem
is connected to the router correctly. You can then enter an atdt command to
test if there is a telephone cable connected to the modem.

If you don't know what reverse telnet is refer to previous mails.

Re: DLCI Numbering Scheme

2000-08-03 Thread Frank Wells

Use a portion of the IP addresses of the interfaces you are using for the
Frame lines or the loopback address etc. If you don't have your frame lines
or loopback addresses already configured or you don't have the resources
available to do so, use a number off the box of the frame line which will
not change, which you can refer to. T.R, FDDI, Ethernet interfaces are
ideal.

If you make use numbers which are similar to your existing network
configuration you will find it much easier to troubleshoot and monitor.

Mac running IP over Frame Relay

2000-08-03 Thread Mike Bowlin

I have two routers (2524 / 2611) communicating via a Frame Relay WAN
connection. The IOS is IP only.

All MACs are configured to use IP. I can validate MACs on the local network
and access an NT Domain, shares, etc.
The MAC clients on the other end cannot access the shares. They do logon to
the domain.

It would appear that I don't need appletalk to make the connection to NT
shares. Is there something I need to do on the router to make this happen?

Also, one other thing I forgot. If you are trying to do debugs and not
seeing anything, then aside form checking syntax etc. make sure the debug
command you are using does not require fast switching to be turned off. Many
debug commands won't work with silicon, autonomous or fast switching and
must be process switched.
You can disable fast switching with

no ip route-cahce ?? I think that is it. There may be others.

unequal cost load balancing

2000-08-03 Thread Roger Dellaca

An explanation of a question on certificationzone says unequal cost load balancing can
only be process switched, however Doyle's book says unequal cost load balancing can be
either process switched or fast switched. I looked on cisco, only thing I found that
was close was an explanation of pulling more packets from the link with the lower cost
than the link with the higher cost, but it just sounds like they're talking in packets
to give an easy explanation as opposed to confirming that it's only per packet load
balancing.

Does anyone know by experience if unequal-cost load balancing can be fast switched?

Sh logging. Make sure console logging and or monitor logging is enabled,
also check the message level.

router#sh logging
Syslog logging: enabled (0 messages dropped, 0 flushes, 0 overruns)
Console logging: level debugging, 1959 messages logged
Monitor logging: level debugging, 1846 messages logged
Buffer logging: level debugging, 1959 messages logged
Trap logging: level informational, 126 message lines logged

This shows that Console logging, and Monitor logging(tty) is enabled and
that debug messages and higher will be logged to the console. If you are
only logging alerts or critical then you will not see much.

router(config)#logging ?
Hostname or A.B.C.D IP address of the logging host
  buffered Set buffered logging parameters
  console Set console logging level
facility Facility parameter for syslog messages
  history Configure syslog history table
monitor Set terminal line (monitor) logging level
on Enable logging to all supported destinations
source-interface Specify interface for source address in logging
   transactions
trap Set syslog server logging level

router(config)#logging monitor ?
  <0-7> Logging severity level
  alerts Immediate action needed (severity=1)
  critical Critical conditions (severity=2)
  debugging Debugging messages(severity=7)
  emergenciesSystem is unusable(severity=0)
  errors Error conditions (severity=3)
  informational Informational messages(severity=6)
notifications Normal but significant conditions (severity=5)

CBT Training Options (CCNP)

RE: Review of BSCN: Building Scalable Cisco Networks

2000-08-03 Thread Louie Belt

While I can't entirely agree with your review, I can say this:

I read the book (my only reference) and then took the test and scored a 906.
So I feel that there is a lot of good material in the book - HOWEVER, there
were quite a few errors in the book and a horrific number on the CD based
test that comes with the book. Almost 20% of the questions/answers had
severe errors for example:

Question # 166 states that: RIP uses UDP port 1058 for updates when in fact
it uses UDP port 520 (1058 is the RFC for RIP)

Question # 165 states that: RIP is a link state protocol, when it is
actually a Distance Vector protocol.

Question # 168 states that: RIP response messages are sent every 5 seconds,
but in the book they state that RIP response messages are sent every 30
seconds.

Question # 174 states that: IGRP uses hops and Autonomous System number for
link metrics, when it actually uses delay and bandwidth.

Question # 163 & 183 states that: IGRP is not a classful routing protocol
when it is.

Question # 176 states that: Split horizon "ignores duplicate information
from more than one interface" when it is actually to prevent routing
information from being sent out of the same interface from which it was
received".

Question # 164 states that: OSPF is not a classless routing protocol when it
is.

These are just a few samples, I found nearly 40 questions (out of 200) that
had such blatant errors.

My suggestion is use the book, along with the Boson tests (BSMSN tests 1&2)
and throw the CD away.

Hope this helps.

Louie

Review of BSCN: Building Scalable Cisco Networks

1 out of 5 starsIncomplete Coverage - Missing PSV Protocol

Reviewer: A Humble Reviewer from Rehoboth Beach, DE

This book has incomplete coverage of the topics required to pass the test.
For example they left out all detail of the PSV Protocol that they have
implemented at McGraw Hill.

You might ask what is the PSV Service. Well it stands for Poop Shoot
Violator Service. McGraw Hill has quite evidently implemented this protocol
in BSCN Book but failed to mention its implementation to you the
unsuspecting buyer. They should have clearly mentioned that when you buy
this book you are signing up for two (2) Poop Shoot Violations of yourself.
One (1) for buying the book and not getting any details from it. Two (2) for
then going to take the test, thus paying another hundred bucks, and getting
a second and more expensive Poop Shoot Violation. Thus it is felt by this
reviewer that the PSV Protocol should have been explained in the Disclaimer
section of the Book.

RE: Boson test for BCRAN???

2000-08-03 Thread Odell, Jeff

The Boson tests are a great tool for evaluating if you are ready to take the
BCRAN test. They are not a substitute for learning the material. Pick up a
book and study. When you think you are ready, spend $30 for the Boson test.
If you score well, take the real thing, if not, study more to help on your
weak areas.

I have not been disappointed with any of the Boson tests so far. I have
used then as part of my preparation for CCNA, CCDA, BCRAN and CIT. I will
keep using them as I feel they are a good tool for my style of preparation.

Has anyone used the Boson tests to study for the BCRAN? If so how close
were they?

Thanks,

Cisco Prerequisites

2000-08-03 Thread Adedapo Ola

I would like to express my gratitude for all the responses I recieved during
this decision making stage of mine, they were quite helpful indeed.

In reference to Mr Mintz's example situation:

A fatal MTA database server error was encountered. A bad list member
length is on object 0646. File offset: 3134. Attribute ID: 79.
Referenced object (0 => N/A). Referenced object error: 0. [DB
Server DISP:ROUTER 8 42] (16)

being no such expert, I can only concur with your remarks. But if I were to
logically take a guess from the debugger, I would surmise it as a reference
to a non-existent object, or basically, " get .. , where is ...?

I think.. hmmm

Well, at least I have a million menthors at the moment, and who said these
were hard to find

I forgot to ask yesterday...

does the Sysco cert cover advanced condiments such as mint jelly and
horseradish? Does it cover other savories? Do you have to know which is most
appropriate as seasoning for various meats, poultries, and vegetables?

I'll bet Howard would know!

Re: Another New CCIE Book

Haven't even opened it yet. Just bought based on the QUE name and it has a
CD with 240 questions.

I allow myself a generous book allowance in my business so I thought I'd
have a look. It was only published in June 2000 so I also thought a newer
book would be interesting what with the new stuff being added to the CCIE
track.

It is indeed geared to the written (hence the 350-001 in the title).

I like your comment on strengthening the CCIE cert through the increased
fail rate on the lab.
