CCIE written

2000-09-15 Thread John Barnes

I took and passed the CCIE written today. Not that
bad a test coming off the CCNP track. Honestly, I'd
never even touched a switch before about 4 months ago.
Wish I could say more about it, but it really is a
fair test. Sure made me feel better about that crappy
interview I had this week.

makes 7 tests in 10 weeks... :)

Good luck!

2900/3500XL Cluster Config STP

2000-09-15 Thread Adrian Chew

Curious question - anyone knows if a clustered stack of 2900/3500s will
appear as a single STP bridge to other switches or each cluster switch
appears as a seperate bridge? I'm guessing each switch is treated as a
seperate bridge entity for the purposes of STP.

The cause of concern would be if one stacks 16 3500s using Gigastack
connectors into a cluster, and use the remaining Gig port on the top and
bottom switches as uplinks, you'd end up with a pretty large STP diameter
caused by the stacking... assuming the cluster is split right down the
middle with a port between switches 8 and 9 in blocking state, the maximum
diameter would be 17? (the 8 switches on either side plus the
distribution/core switch the stack connects to). If one tunes STP
accordingly, it would lengthen the network outages during STP convergence.

Any thoughts on this - and designs with stacks of 2900s/3500s that are
stringed one to another rather than each uplinked seperately to the uplink
switch?

Regards,
Adrian

Re: Configuring Catalyst 1200 ?

2000-09-15 Thread Ejay Hire

That is illogical. The switch shouldn't care if it's a DB9 or DB25 on the
other end of the cable. Connect to the console port and Power cycle the
switch. If you see Gibberish, the Baud Rate is wrong. 9600 is the default,
but depending on the config-register, it could be 9600,4800,2400, or 1200.
(Other comm settings are 8,none,1)

Re: trace route question

2000-09-15 Thread Charles Ryan

In your traceroute, the router has multiple paths to the destination, that's
why you get the output that you have below. On your router, if you do a
"show ip route www.ibm.com", note the next hop address, then do a show ip
route on that next hop ip address, chances are you will have multiple paths
to that next hop address.

I got AMP certified in cat5 and fiber and administration...It's sort of a
joke, ya do it every 2 years. Face facts, when you are persuing Cisco
Certification, everything else looks "half assed".

Don't forget to study this weekend everybody!

Sounds like the guy is serious. Heck if he wants the date, he must already
know the information and configs. Instead of flaming him maybe we should
spend more time hitting the books or playing with the equipment. My 2 cents

Ok I think that settles it then. I'm running 12.07T 3DES/FW/IDS on my

That is, if he has enough flash to run an enterprise version.

Re: BSCN Test (Routing)

Cisco is apparently using a logical "building-block" approach to their
certification objectives. Assume that if you are taking a CCNP-level exam
that you are already expected to know any information required for the CCNA
(review the CCNA objectives to be sure you are confident in that material).
It would be a violation of the NDA (Confidentiality Agreement) to discuss
what subjects are on the exam other than rehashing the stated objectives or
perhaps a relevant course outline.

2000-09-15 Thread Bradley J. Wilson

No no no, you guys have it all wrong...this isn't about money...he mentioned
a decline in Morales, and he's absolutely right - Hector Morales (star of
such comedy classics as "Oh God," "Herbie Goes Bananas," and "Three Amigos")
hasn't done *any* work since 1988's "Out of the Dark"!

Guys

The best practice is surely to write your own questions based on the
course text. You will find in order to frame the questions, you need to
know the answers and therefore the subject. And as Frank mentioned, test
questions then become irrelevant. I've tried this on 14 Prometric exams
for a range of qualifications including Cisco.. and I have managed to
pass every one [thank God].

How in the world can this be considered "a decline in morales"? Maybe I'm
naive but how does this have anything to do with my morales? When you go to
the store and purchase something, what are you doing? Wait I'll answer YOU
ARE PAYING FOR IT. If there's an auction for something and you outbid
someone, what is that? Wait I'll answer YOU ARE PAYING FOR IT. As far as
I'm concerned you 2 don't have a clue. Are you both self employed? NO,
then by that standard you are "IT whores" also. you are providing services
to someone else, and whether you are small minded enough to think you are
actually being paid show's your stupidity. If making more money helps me
support my family, then I'll pay 100 bucks to get another shot at a
certification

As this list goes, if you don't like the subject line, ignore it.

Re: Layer 2 Addressing

2000-09-15 Thread Ed Crowe

Neil,
How did the canonical/MAC issue arise, and why is it so confusing?

I think it was a mistake. A mistake made because we are all guilty of using
terminology that means different things to different people. We often do
not bother to define something because it is so "natural" that "everyone
knows it". Making this mistake is probably how the definers-of-standards
and the manufacturers-of-hardware got us into this little mess.

I'm going to try to avoid terms like: "endian" (big and little), memory
(computer and adapter), "significance" (most and least significant) unless
essential. Most issues of memory-addressing --- on the basis of byte,
word, integer, string, or whatever --- are only indirectly related to this
question.

So what are we left with?
1. Sequential transmission of bits on the wire.
2. Representation and identification of these bits, on paper, in the
standard
3. Representation and identification of the bits-within-a-byte, on paper,
in hardware documentation of a computer.

To be more specific, the first issue is: sequential sending of a frame of
bytes, one bit at a time, so that the collection can be identically
reconstructed at the receiver. So this first issue is not a problem as long
as whatever-we-do at the sender is reciprocated at the receiver.

The second issue is also simple. LAN standards involve definition of
meanings of various parts of the bit-stream. To explain what they wanted,
the definers-of-standards had to represent their concepts on paper. To
represent the bit-sequence, they wrote down bits from left-to-right.
Left-to-right, naturally, because --- in western culture --- our
time-sequence is left-to-right for reading/writing.

As part of the standard, the beginning of the frame includes an address, and
the standard defines that the first bit (first, in time sequence, naturally)
of the address denotes whether the address is multicast. Because of the way
they wrote it down, this "first bit" was the left-most bit.
As an example, just take a possible first byte and write it down on paper:
01000101
The first bit of this first byte has the value zero, which the standard
defines as meaning that the address is not multicast. The
definers-of-standards decided, naturally, to number the bits in the same
left-to-right sequence. It would have been very strange for them to have
decided otherwise. They assumed that this "natural" numbering would be
fine. And it is, until a hardware engineer has to implement it.

Now for the third part. Manufacturers-of-hardware also represent bits and
bytes. They also enumerate bits-within-a-byte to allow documentation of
their product.
HOWEVER...
Within a computer, there is no inherent time-sequence to guide the numbering
scheme. Within a computer, each byte is transferred "in parallel". No bit
arrives before or after any other. There is no "natural" direction for
numbering. Most hardware designers number the representation of their
bits-within-a-byte from RIGHT-TO-LEFT.

So put yourself in the position of the designer of the adapter. He has to
serialize each byte. He has a quick look at the standard and sees that the
bits on the wire are numbered in an ascending sequence. So he builds a bit
of kit to do it. To send the byte above, most computers then have to
transfer this byte:
10100010
(If ever he finds out, a good hardware designer knows that any complaint is
just one of many, many, many issues that whining, lazy programmers are
always dredging up, to try to get hardware engineers to do their jobs for
them.)
;-)

So, I think that is how the problem started... Then it was made worse...

Despite the fact that LANs work perfectly well with this anomaly, the
inadequate definition in the earlier standards (802.3 and 802.4) was
addressed in the later ones.

For 802.5 and FDDI the definers-of-standards insisted on serializing from
the left-most bit of (most) computers' representations. If they had just
left it the same it probably would never have been important.
After all. how important is it to know whether the parity bit for async
serial goes first or last?

Anyway, look on the bright side, it makes various forms of mixed-media
bridging more entertaining.

Best regards,
Ed Crowe

2000-09-15 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

Kenny:

I hope you can calm down a second, take a deep breath and re-read the
thread. We were defending you.

I think you need to reconsider who you're posting to, or how you're replying
to posts on here when you are angry.

Chill the hell out and don't let this Cisco thing get to you. It's NOT
worth it. Now go pass your damn lab!

Does anyone know the passing grade for the CCNP tests. I took the ACRC

Re: How to get rid of "Loading network-config ... [timed out]

2000-09-15 Thread Thomas Lisa

In global config mode enter: no service config
Then: copy run start
At next boot up it will not try and auto load configuration files from a network
server.

Complete explanation is here:

Do a show run. Somewhere near the top, there should be a line that says
"service config". Remove it by typing "no service config" in global config
mode.

Try, "no service config". For some reason, the router tries to load the
files from a tftp server first, so you tell it not to with that command.

Ok I think that settles it then. I'm running 12.07T 3DES/FW/IDS on my

That is, if he has enough flash to run an enterprise version.

Re: Help about a technical interview I had PLEASE!

2000-09-15 Thread Cthulu, CCIE Candidate

There is also the possiblity that the CCIE was testing you, to see how you
would handle one of your fellow workers spouting wrong information.

I have sometimes deliberately and incorrectly stated some wrong information
to find out exactly how much someone knew about something, and how they
would handle it to hear someone else give out incorrect information.

It 's like an experienced mechanic asking a new mechanic "How often do you
change the flush the radiator in a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle?" as a way of
determing what they know.

Just a thought!

Charles

P.S. You don't: the 1969 beetle does not have a radiator!

ask your provider1 NOT to aggregate your /23 block, instead advertise it
alone, AND put more AS # in your updates to provider2 so as to make the
route(AS_path) longer for them to reach you.

hope help.

RE: Help about a technical interview I had PLEASE!

2000-09-15 Thread Leigh Anne Chisholm

John/Sam

I interviewed with an organization recently and completely blew one question. I was
asked what in an SMTP header will help troubleshoot email delivery problems. Now I
immediately start thinking about framing formats, and I don't know the frame format of
an SMTP header. I panic. I say I don't know.

I get home, I realize they weren't asking what field in a frame, but rather what
information in the header that you can see as plain as day that gets tacked on to an
email message. I feel very silly...

I emailed the hiring manager, and asked if this is what they were referring to, and
provided him with a few examples of when I've used the SMTP header to troubleshoot
delivery problems before.

If I get the job, wonderful--they like my initiative following up. If I don't... oh
well. I've been thinking about changing careers, because there are very few
companies in my city that I would like to work for...

John--what if the CCIE was trying to find out not just what technical knowledge you
had, but how you handled difficult situations where two people who worked together
thought differently about what was right. Would you defer to the CCIE just because
they're a CCIE or would you take initiative to find the correct answer? Would you
follow up? Maybe... maybe not. It's hard to guess what's going on in the heads of
interviewers. I like to keep a positive attitude and not think the worst. I'd HATE
to think a CCIE wouldn't know simple network concepts.

Same problem for me. I have been waiting for more than a month. They said
on their website they will do it once a week, but apparently they didn't.
Maybe because their service is free, they are not motivated to keep their

Anyway, I'm just gonna get my CCIE, that groupstudy CCIE list is NOT GOD.

RE: trace route question

2000-09-15 Thread Roger Wang

That's because there are more than one equal-cost next hops. You see three
round-trip times because the packets with the same TTL were send out three
times. If you look at your hop 3, you can see that it responded three
times.

BSCN Test (Routing)

I've looked at all the objectives for this exam. They say that other things
that are not listed could possibly be on the exam.
I was wondering if anyone has taken it. If so, are there any other subjects
I ought to prepare for before testing.

Obscure (?) questions

2000-09-15 Thread Kristopher B. Climie

Hello, all. I am trying to find the answers to some questions, but have
looked all over Cisco's web site and in every book I have. Since I am
having such a hard time finding the answers, I thought I would post them
here, and hopefully help someone else out in the process.

1) Host A (on ring 001) and Host B (on ring 003) are separated by two Cisco
routers acting as bridges. The virtual ring number of Router A is 19 and
the virtual ring number of Router B is 0x19. What is the RIF for a packet
transmitted from Host A to Host B? Or is this not even a valid config?

 _
|A|---
 /_
|B|

2) Host A and Host B are separated by two Cisco routers configured to route
IP packets. The two routers are separated by a serial line using HDLC
encap. During a packet transmission from Host A to Host B, the serial line
takes a hit. Who is responsible for retranslating the packet?

 _
|A|---
 /_
|B|

3) In an ATM lane setup, where are IP ARP requests sent?

Thanks a bunch...
K

John,

Besides the technical questions, how was the chemistry between you and the
interviewer? I know I went through a recent interview and I left wondering
if I wanted to work with the interviewer. Needless to say, I wasn't offered
a second interview. Guess he felt the same.

I had technical with a CCIE interview yesterday, and
I’m not really sure were to go with this.

He asked me a lot of pretty high level questions and
some not so high level, the problem is, I feel some of
the answers he wanted were wrong. I’m going to post
the questions, the answers I gave, and the answers he
claimed to be correct. If I’m wrong on these, I’d
like to know. If I’m right, how would you deal with
this kind of thing?

1) What is the size of a token ring frame?
My answer: Token ring has a variable frame size.
His answer: 3 bytes..

Isn’t that the size of the Token frame?

2) What the MTU of a token ring frame? (Isn’t this
about the same question as #1?)
My answer: slightly larger that 16K (I couldn’t
remember the exact number)
His answer: about 4470 bytes .

Ahh….. what? He claimed I was thinking about
FDDI…g Ah… Who’s thinking about what?

3) What is the decision making process involved when a
packet enters a router? What three criteria are used
to make this decision?
My answer: It depends. Is this the first
packet with this destination to arrive at this router?
What switching mode is the router configured for.

His answer: Forget about that stuff… how does
it determine which route to use.

My answer: longest match in the routing table

His answer: What if multiple routes exist in
the table.

   My answer: It depends.

Ok…..I’m gonna cut to the chase… The answer he
wanted was longest match, Administrative distance,
then metric. Ahh…. I’m pretty sure is wrong. The
router looks at AD and Metrics long before the packet
enters the router. The router uses AD and metric to
populate the routing table, and then longest match
from the routing table to make the decision once the
packet actually enters the router. Comparing AD and
metric on every known route every time would place
unnecessary burden on the CPU. Compare it once, make
the decision, and enter it in the RIT. Even in the
case of IGRP/EIGRP with variance, the next eligible
route is determined before the packet enters the
router.

Maybe I should have picked up on this stuff when
the recruiter asked me with BGP was a DV or LS based
routing protocol. My answer… ahh…neither, it’s path
vector.

I’m basically sending this out to get thoughts, and
hopefully Howard, Priscilla or someone can tell me
wether I’m off technically or not.

THANKS!

-john

RE: trace route question

2000-09-15 Thread Nguyen_Trang

I read somewhere a long while ago about the internal working of traceroute.
I may be wrong, but I recall that it goes something like this:
a. Source to 1st hop.
b. Back to source to print first hop (success) and time.
c. Source to 2nd hop via 1st hop.
d. Back to source ignore time to first hop, print second hop (success) and
time.
and so on.

Passed CID

2000-09-15 Thread Vijay Ramcharan

Hi all, just wanted to share my elation with the rest of you. I took CID
for the second time yesterday and barely passed with a 67% score. The first
time I scored 60%. As mentioned many times on this list, the CID is one of
the more difficult exams because it requires thinking a bit beyond what you
actually learn from the study guide. Quite a few of the questions were
really puzzling and it was hard to figure out what answer to choose. I have
nothing really to add other than the fact that the exam objectives are a
pretty accurate guide of what topics should be known. 100 questions, 65%
passing score. I used Cisco Internetwork Design from Cisco Press and CID
Study Guide from Sybex. Anyone planning to take this test, be forewarned.
Don't be fooled by the apparent simplicity of the material in the study
guide. Good luck. Now I'm on to advancing my knowledge by tackling CCIE
material and the long hard road to THE lab...

RE: BCMSN: Inter VLAN communication

2000-09-15 Thread Dinesh B

Hi..

Well, I must say I am confused now...The only reason what I could think of
that setup depends on the configuration in the router. If in the router,
you want to retain the VLAN information then probably we endup with the 3
line setup. Group, clarify this doubt.

BGP question - Multihoming

2000-09-15 Thread Martin-Guy Richard

I have a tricky version for you guys:

I am multihomed to two provider. I got a /23 from Provider1. I
announce my /23 two Provider1 and Provider2. Since my /23 comes from
Provider1, he is supposed to aggregate in in is /16 CIDR. But, I have
to announce my /23 to my other provider. Somebody told me that the
longest prefix becomes something of a traffic magnet (or something like
that). So, all of my traffic would come from Provider2 and not
Provider1. How is it so, since BGP use aggregation?

I don't understand!

Am i missing something or the gif does say that the vertical scale is in
bytes not bits. So if you are reaching 180K bytes per second then it is
equivalent to 1440 K bits per sec which is pretty good if you ask me.

netmeeting through firewall..?

2000-09-15 Thread Stull, Cory

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to allow netmeeting through a 2600
IOS firewall securely?
The remote users will not have same address all of the time.. I'm geussing
I will end up setting up AAA authentication to a radius type server to do it
securely because I don't want to just open up the netmeeting ports to
anyone.

Any other suggestions on cheap radius server software, or new ideas are
appreciated.. I'm not asking for assistance just ideas. So please no
flames.

Thanks

RE: BCMSN: Inter VLAN communication

2000-09-15 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

Maybe I am slow this Friday morning, but I still do not see the light.

If we forget about them being three VLAN's on one switch, let's instead say
they are three LAN's - one on each switch. You would now connect those three
switches to the router with a cable per switch - thus using three cables. On
the other side of the router we only had one VLAN, so we just forget about
the VLAN and make it a LAN which then only need one switch, and thus only
one cable to the router.

What we have now is four switches - each in a separate LAN, that are
interconnected via the router.

If we say that the three LAN's are in building A and the fourth LAN are in
building B, and the router we could place in the parking garage. We would
now need three cables from the router to building A and one cable from the
router to building B.

So far, so good.

It would make sense to connect the first three switches to each other and
separate the LAN's by making VLAN's instead (we are now getting back to the
original plot). The switch in building B only has one LAN, so we would only
need to make one VLAN over there.

Now, why should I suddenly have to run three cables instead of only one
between the router and the switch in building B???

Thanks for your comments (and time) on this,

Ole

Hi

In the first scenario, the book explains the setup without ISL being
configured, and hence each one of the 3 VLANs need a separate link to
communicate to VLAN60. Only when ISL is configured , your argument holds
good.

Hope this clears your doubt.

Correct me if I'm wrong. In the below trace route, the three entries in
the first hop are the three attempts to route from hop 1 to hop2, correct?
It is not the case that the router cannot determine how to get to

packet from s20.r8.mtcrcl to s1.r1.mrbakr to s0.r8.mtcrcl before sending it

I was looking through this and didn't notice the command you were looking
for as shown from the link you gave.. Maybe this will work.. instead! Here
is a Manual keying example that list the commands within a table so you know
exactly why you're doing what.

You DO have enabled access on all of the other connected routers.

Re: Pix Failover Question

2000-09-15 Thread BE

Rodgers,

Hi! Thanks for your response.

The answer is YES to all of your questions. The really strange thing is,
when I leave the single PIX 510 running for an extended period of time, it
works great, no problems. When I add the second PIX, it just seems to grab
the DMZ connection (but leaves the other two connections alone). My
original guess was that there is some strange bug in 4.4 somewhere that I
havent seen.

Both boxes have the same config (and are sync'd up).

It sounds like they're both identical. That's good.
Do you have ALL the interfaces in an UP state? and each pair of interfaces

A down interface will be considered a failure

Both configs are identical? You power cycled both boxes at the same time?

Pix Failover Question

2000-09-15 Thread BE

Hey gang! Any Pix gurus out there?

I've been playing with a couple of Pixs (510s) trying to get the failover to
work. I thought it would be a piece of cake, but it just isn't showing me
any love. Ive got (2) Pix 510s that each have 3 NICs in them (internal,
untrusted, DMZ) each running 4.4. Everything seems all fine and dandy until
about 10 minutes later when the standby PIX starts stealing the DMZ
connections.

Any thoughts?

I think it would make sense to put it on the Ethernet Interface (out) so
that the router applies the access list only once, instead of on each
individual dial-up port.

Is this right?

Hello all.

We are using some AS5300 for our access-network. I need to deny some ports
to the dialup users.
Where it is better to apply the access-lists? To the Asynchronous group or
the the Ethernet port.

I bielive that it is better to apply the access-list to the asynchronous
group but I am thinking whether this will affect the performance of the
dialup users.

Any information will be appreciated
