What is the problem with my 2621?

2000-12-06 Thread Bilge Karabacak

I configured a Cisco 2621 router. The problem with this router is its
throughput. It is ten times slower than a linux machine acting as a
gateway with two ethernet interfaces. The properties of linux machine is
Intel celeron 400, 64 MByte RAM. The second important point is that,
the router gave this result with no access-lists. The last one to say is
that,, NAT operation at this cisco 2621 degrades performance by 60%
percent. This is ridicilous, if all cisco routers are like this one.
May you please comment on this, after examining the configuration of the
router? Is it normal? What should I do to increase performance?

Frame Relay SVC

2000-12-06 Thread Ken Yeo

Any one knows how to configure Frame Relay SVC switch on Cisco routers?

The Cisco configuration guide has examples for SVC on routers but no example
for SVC switch configuration. How do you test your SVC router configuration?

I have searched the archives, many have asked the questions but I can't seem
to find the answer, so I ask again.

Thanks!

Hi,

In my humble opinion, how about this one?

Let me suppose your provider's AS number is 1:

ip as-path access-list 4 permit ^1 [0-9]+$
ip as-path access-list 4 permit ^1$

You can also check threads "Help about BGP regular expression".
and "Internet Routing Architecture" pp. 370~378

Re: Router(boot)#

2000-12-06 Thread Atef Rostom

Another slow but solid way to upload a new image to the router is xmodem.

Put the image on the machine you have connected to the router's console,
then

xmodem

and when you have the "ready to receive message ... " use you terminal
application to send the file using the X-Modem Protocol.

Win Hyperterm, File transfer menu, send file option.

This will also load/start the IOS as soon as the upload is complete, if you
don't want it to start, add -x to the xmodem command.

This is s..l..o..w.. I repeat, usually 9600 compared to the TFTP 1000,
but solid and reliable.

Good luck.

CCIE Written Passed ---- JUST!

2000-12-06 Thread McCallum, Robert

Hi,

I have just received the beautiful news that I have passed the CCIE Written.
At the moment I am still typing with my hands trembling from the experience.
For those of you who have still to sit this exam good luck. I personally
didn't enjoy the experience as from question 50 I thought I had failed. As
for exam questions I can hardly remember any BUT what I will say is that you
do not get told how many answers there are to the questions i.e. choose all
that apply between 1 and 8 answers. On most of these questions (around 30)
I found that I always had a maybe correct, so I was faced with do I check it
or Not.

The subject headings for my exam were :-

Cisco Device Operation
Networking Theory
Bridging and LAN Switching
TCP/IP
IP routing protocols
Desktop Protocols
Performance management
WAN
LAN
Security
Multiservice

For me the areas that I thought I was strong in i.e. TCPIP, Cisco device
operation were the worst (except the security questions 33% in that field).
I scored 50% in TCPIP (doh!) and 50 % in Cisco device operation. You really
have to know your bridging if you don't, I reckon you wont pass.

The total I got was 70% the pass mark was 70% -- what springs to mind
is I am one lucky person. But hell, it still says PASS.

I am now sitting the design written in two days (I must be MAD!), will let
you know how that goes but after this experience I am not looking forward to
it.

Aste!

P.S. I am heading to the pub right now! Cheers!!

Ok, well lets say your upstream is AS 666, the devil himself.

neighbor x.x.x.x filter-list 51 in
ip as-path access-list 51 permit ^666 ?[0-9]*$

this would allow all routes with just "666" in the AS PATH, and
additionally one more hop. Customers of 666 who prepend could get
"missed" by this.but all and all its a good compromise. BGP's
regex's dont' support forward look-ahead type matching (at least I don't
think so) so you can't really say "And also count additional hops as long
as they are the same as the previous hop" (for prepending customers).

Have you heard of the CiscoPress book by Sam Halabi called Internet Routing Architectures, he is the BGP Guru.

Hello,

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good CBT or Book or something to
learn more about BGP?  I read a book on BGP, but it talked about
confederations, communities and bgp in general.  The ACRC book I have
only grazes the subject I was hoping for a book or something that would
go more in depth.  EX: Confederations, Commands, Filters, Regular
Expressions, etc...  Can anyone give me some good suggestions?  I of
course am looking for material concerning Cisco BGP configuration!

Any suggestions are welcome!!!

Thank You,
Andre

I will be writing the CCDA exam next week, and was wondering if there is any
material on AppleTalk on it. I have been studying quite a bit and found that
AppleTalk is widely covered, mind you this was the same for CCNA, and I
found no questions regarding AppleTalk on the CCNA. Can anyone please answer
this question for me?

Thanks very much.

Re: OSPF redistribution into RIP

2000-12-06 Thread Paul Fazzone

I would have to disagree with this responseThe "ip ospf priority" command is used
to
determing the DR/BDR Election. Should there be a tie, the router with the higher
Router
ID would be chosen.

The Router ID is the highest IP address on the router at the time OSPF was configured
or
at the time the router boots up with OSPF configured. My sugestion, if it will fit you
scenario, is to redistribute a default route into rip and let your Cache-flow server
feed
off that. This way, you don't have to worry about mutual redistribution issues(which
are
a huge no-no anyway) and you can inject the static route into rip from multiple spots,
so
you will have redundancy.

Just my $0.02

Re: CID Beta

2000-12-06 Thread Chris H

I would have to agree with some of Roberts comments... There were some
questions that I just shook my head because of the lack of clarity. Some of
the diagrams in the exhibits were utterly useless, it may have been more
usefull to answer the questions without looking at them.

I thought the exam focused more on specific topics, objectives that were
clearly covered in the 3 foundation exams, rather than design theory and
related topics. While I took the CCIE Design beta sometime last spring and
was very impressed with the material on the test, the CID clearly didn't
focus enough on design. I haven't taken the Foundation exam, just the tests
individually, but the CID seemed to be what I would picture the Foundation
being.

I thought the test was redundant and noticed similar questions that I've
seen on other exams.

Most of the questions seemed to be pretty straight forward, and it is pretty
current with technology.

You can also source off of the internal calendar clock if you have 7200
series router in your network and therefore would not need an NTP server.

You can setup an NTP Server on a unix machine and let all
your routers sync to this NTP server by configure the following commands
in your routers. Make sure you have a accurate timing in your server.

ntp clock-period 17179860

Re: CCDA and appletalk help please

2000-12-06 Thread Bharat Suneja

I took the CCDA 3 weeks ago. Didn't find any AppleTalk questions. You might
find some case studies where AppleTalk is covered. I think what's useful is
to know the AppleTalk addressing format - network.node.port, and that EIGRP
is the routing protocol to use if you want to route IP, IPX & AppleTalk.
Also know what's AURP & RTMP. AppleTalk is not really covered in much
detail - when you see some Macs on a case study you'll have to figure out
what routed & routing protocols are being used - I don't clearly remember
whether I saw any AppleTalk questions at all.

All the best for the CCDA.

RE: Router(boot)#

2000-12-06 Thread Quadri, Habeeb

If a router has ethernet interface, as shown in "sh ver" then activate the
interface by giving it an ip address. If you don't want to connect to live
network then use a simple class C ip address, configure a laptop (tftp
server)with another ip address in the same subnet, use tftp download.
Config register setting 0x2102 is not a problem in this case.

Wireless Networking

2000-12-06 Thread Denis A. Baldwin

I am going to have to rewire our whole network for centralization in the
next couple of months and am looking at possibly making some or all of it
wireless. We have an all NT network. We currently have approximately 60
nodes. We will probably be up to 80-100 nodes within 2 years. We were
looking at using Cisco gear to replace our aging Kingston network. The
whole LAN is less than 200 feet in length from end to end and will be
meeting in the middle at around the 100 foot mark. Here are the questions:

Would wireless technology be a possibility?

Would it be cheaper in the long run to just rerun homeruns to a centralized
switch and stay wired?

What technology would we need to make this work?

If we have to stay wired, what switch would you recommend?

Does wireless really only go up to 11MB?

Thanks for all your help.

The proper key is the one that gets you to the Hilgraeve web site to
download the enhanced version of Hyperterminal that actually sends the
"break". Else search the archives for references to TeraTerm sp?. It is a
free terminal emulation utility.

Halabi's book is a good reference. I would also pay a lot of attention to the
following

*RFC 1771 BGP v4
*RFC 1997 BGP Communities
*RFC 2796 BGP Route Reflection
*RFC 1965 BGP AS Confederations
*RFC 1998 BGP Communities for Multihoming

I would also read Cisco's site fully to get a feel for their implementation
methodology.

Depends on the cabling requirement on your site.
If free run cable is acceptable. The cost is low.
If conduit and pipe work is a must. Then Wireless may be a cheaper solution.

> If we have to stay wired, what switch would you recommend?

If you don't need VLAN and VLAN routing. I suggest Catalyst 6509.
If you need VLAN and VLAN routing, I suggest you not to use Cisco.
Let's try Extreme or Foundry

For a 802.11 Wireless LAN, yes. but in a limit distant only. And it must be an open
area. Not block by wall.
If the env is not idel. It will step down to 5MB, 2MB then 1MB.

The above page has a list of break key combinations, depending on platform and

even
for Windows NT. If you can't get Hyperterminal to work I suggest the freeware package
TeraTerm which is in constant use on my laptop.

Get TeraTerm Pro from the authors at:

There's an ssh add-on, also freeware: http://www.zip.com.au/~roca/ttssh.html

Re: Password recovery, 2610

2000-12-06 Thread Larry Ogun-Banjo

How to Simulate a Break Key Sequence
This is useful if your terminal emulator doesn't support the break key, or
if a
bug prevents it from sending the correct signal (the hyperterminal under
Windows
NT used to suffer from this behavior):

Connect to the router with the following terminal settings:
1200 baud rate
No parity
8 data bits
1 stop bit
No flow control

You will no longer be able to see any output on your screen. This is normal.

Reload the router and press the spacebar for 10-15 seconds. This generates a
signal similar to the break sequence.

Disconnect your terminal and reconnect with a 9600 baud rate. You should now
be
in ROM Monitor mode.

I notice that you have spped and duplex set to "auto".

Are the FE interfaces running at 100Mb/s? If not, might explain
10 time slower throughput.

"Show int" might help here.

Re: modem configuration

2000-12-06 Thread Frank Wells

Are you using the documentation that came with the modem to enter the
correct commands into the modem? I suspect you are not using the correct
commands to either enter or save the new parameters. If you don't have the
docs that came with the modems, go to the manufacturers website and download
them.

If, after having gotten the modems to save their parameters, you still have
problems, note their firmware revision and cross reference with the
TAC bug database to see if their are any known problems with certain IOS
revs and MICA modem revs.

BTW, Cisco also has tons of general information on MICA modems. Run a
search for 'mica modems' and you will have more info that you need.

If the routes are learned over both links from the OSPF process, it will
use both links automatically.

Halabi's book is a good reference. I would also pay a lot of attention to the
following

*RFC 1771 BGP v4
*RFC 1997 BGP Communities
*RFC 2796 BGP Route Reflection
*RFC 1965 BGP AS Confederations
*RFC 1998 BGP Communities for Multihoming

I would also read Cisco's site fully to get a feel for their implementation
methodology.

RE: What is the problem with my 2621? - continued

2000-12-06 Thread psimmons

Bilge,

I presume all traffic is being process switched because you are
running IDS commands on this router.

This excerpt is from
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/120newft/120t/120t5/iosfw2/ios_ids.htm

(watch the wrap)

"Memory and Performance Impact
The performance impact of intrusion detection will depend on
the number of signatures enabled, the level of traffic on the
router, the router platform, and other individual features enabled
on the router such as encryption, source route bridging, and
so on. Because this router is being used as a security device,
no packet will be allowed to bypass the security mechanisms.
The IDS process in the Cisco IOS Firewall router sits directly
in the packet path and thus will search each packet for signature
matches. In some cases, the entire packet will need to be searched,
and state information and even application state and awareness
must be maintained by the router."

I infer from this that all traffic will be process switched -
i.e. take the lowest performance path through the router.

>From
http://195.116.208.9/cheat/router_performance.htm
(Watch the wrap)

Throughput in PPS for various platforms:
ID Process Fast
2500 800 4,400
2610 1,500 15,000
2620 1,500 25,000
3620 2,000 40,000
3640 4,000 80,000
3660 12,000 120,000
4500 5,000 40,000
4700 7,000 50,000

If you're seeing these kind of numbers, then this may be the
cause.

Let us know what happens.

Regards

Pete S.

Re: Wireless Networking

2000-12-06 Thread Perry Lucas

I would not recommend wireless in your environment. While wireless is a
nice gee wiz thing, it should be used to compliment the functionality of
your network but not be your network.

First, the current limitation is 11 megabit SHARED bandwidth. So you will
get better performance by having Cat5e or Cat6 home runned to a switch.

Without knowing what your business is, it sounds like you could get away
with a stack of 2 to 3 3548 switches. BUT you could potentially also get a
Catalyst 4000 series switch. However, if you have QOS, VoIP, IP/TV or other
high end needs, a cat 6000 or 6500 series chasis maybe appropriate.

Hm. That's a good question. I'm thinking aloud here

You can reduce the bandwidth with the bandwidth command, and then delay
increases. But that is just from the point of view of EIGRP routing
metrics. To really increase the delay is a lot harder. You could add a
bunch of access lists and other features so that the router gets bogged
down processing, but it would be a lot of work to get this calibrated to
the exact delay that you want.

Could you use a simulation tool instead? Have you looked into Cisco's
Netsys product? Another good product is NetPredictor from
http://www.netpredict.com.

You should send this question to the Cisco Group Study list. I hope you
don't mind if I copy them. Any ideas, folks? Thanks.

I don't think anyone has come out with a CVOICE study guide yet. Your best

highly recommend the following book,

DSL aggregation says it all. A DSLAM aggregates multiple DSL lines into
single or multiple OC3 or OC12 (Depending and what you use) circuit to feed
back into the core of a network. Look up 6400, 6111, and DSLAM on Cisco's
web page.

All this is true. But if I remenber, considering the switching mode on the
concerned interfaces, you will use per session load-balancing (fast
switching) or per packet load-balancing (process switching).

Jeff Doyle p. 564 Frame-relay with OSPF

2000-12-06 Thread Ken Yeo

In the book, on the spoke routers, all sub-interfaces didn't explicitly
define multipoint or point-to-point inteface, I tried that and IOS 11.2/11.3
requires multipoint or point-to-point interface type to be explicitly
defined.

I think Doyle means to run point-to-point on the spoke routers because if
they are multipoint, by default OSPF network types are mismatched between
hub and spoke.

Am I correct? Or did I miss anything here?

Thanks!

RE: Router(boot)#

has anybody thoguth that this router has an IOS and is not booting from the correct
partition? It cannot route packets because the IOS was not fiully loaded. All
routers come with default software. Check to see if there is a boot system flash
statement. Make sure the IOS it is calling is calling it from the correct partition
and the name is correct.

sh flash detail

>>> "Quadri, Habeeb" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 12/06/00 10:32AM >>>

CCSI question

2000-12-06 Thread Brian

We have a training facility in my town.

They are *not* a Cisco Authorized Training Partner.

They bring in a guy from out of state who is a CCSI. He teaches some
classes, and then heads back.

Are CCSI's allowed to do this? My understanding was that a CCSI was not
allowed to do side jobs/unauthorized training at non-cisco training
centers, and only suppose to teach where they are assigned.

FW: ISDN Channels Config Q?

2000-12-06 Thread Jean-Marc Gilbert

HI,

ISDN is working whith 2 B channels (BRI0:1 and BRI0:2) for DATA and 1 D channel
for signalisation (BRI0). To dial to (multiple) location(s), you must use the
signalisation channel for the call setup. So it's normal to configure
everything on the BRI0. Use n dialer map to specify your n locations you want
to dial out to.

yeah this is possible in case u use PPP as encap protocol
u can config two different dialer maps on the physical interface with the
two remote IPs
and try to ping them , both connection will use only 1 channel for each
about the D channel ...i guess u dont have to worry ..it will control both
:))

RE: CID 3.0 is gone??

2000-12-06 Thread Robert Padjen

I spoke with Sylvan and they report that the exam is
officially inactive, however, the Cisco Web site still
reports that 640-025 is the correct one. In addition,
as others have noted, the -015 exam is available. I
have left a VM for Cisco training to try and resolve
for the group and will let everyone know. My guess is
that someone goofed when the CID beta was closed and
they inactivated the mainline exam. This happened on
the CCNA beta a few months ago if you'll recall, and
was fixed in a day or so. As a number of us have
noted, the beta is usually not brought into the
mainline for at least three months, and the beta
doesn't end for another week plus.

Hope that helps for now.

Ok, just as I thought. You are process switching most of your packets on

the header information on the process switched packets and see which ones

Hi!

Better get proper topics from CVOICE 2.0 course and find out proper
documents.
And experience and more practice are helpful.
I 'm 3 years of VoX implementation and passed CVOICE 2.0 with 880 / 1000
points.

Re: simulating delay on Cisco routers in test bench

2000-12-06 Thread xndr

Hi!

On Ethernet it's impossible without some kind of repeater or low-end
gateways.

Try to configure NT server with two Ethernet NICs on i386 computer and try
to load it with many computation and bus manipulating - you'll get PROPER
delay.

On Serial 'clock rate' is helpful, but real satellite delay is longer.

Re: DSL Aggregation

2000-12-06 Thread Patrick A. Morin

DSL aggregation is where you terminate your DSL subscribers, and it's not
necessarely your DSLAM.

For a box, do you mean a box like the RedBack sms1800 ?
http://www.redback.com/products/sms1800_datasheet.asp

The cisco 6400 seems to be an equivalent box.

RE: Router(boot)#

2000-12-06 Thread Kane, Christopher A.

I recently had the same problem on a production 7204VXR. I tried to remove
boot flash and re-add it then reload the router, problem remained. Found out
that the IOS had become corrupted, tftp'd new ios to it and everything
restored. This was something I hadn't seen before.

Side note: Since this was production and was stuck in boot, the only way I
could reach it was by telnetting from the directly connected gateway (border
router)(the oob was ring no answer, which seems to always be the case just
when you need to use it. ha, ha). Changed the default gateway to point to
where we had the IOS and got it onto the router.

Good luck,
Chris

has anybody thoguth that this router has an IOS and is not booting from the
correct partition? It cannot route packets because the IOS was not fiully
loaded. All routers come with default software. Check to see if there is a
boot system flash statement. Make sure the IOS it is calling is calling it
from the correct partition and the name is correct.

Great Deal on CCIE LAN Switching book!!

2000-12-06 Thread Joseph Ezerski

Working towards CCNP and was looking to expand my library. Someone on this
list mentioned to check Mysimon.com and compare book prices. I did that and
I found a great price at Wal-Mart of all places.

Normally the book lists for 70.00 US and Walmart has it, in hard-cover, for
49.00! I ordered it today and so I cannot fully verify it, but the website
did say it was hardcover, so let's hope it comes through as such.

Anyway, it is worth a "look-see".

Re: simulating delay on Cisco routers in test bench

2000-12-06 Thread Marty Adkins

You might experiment with traffic shaping. If you set it low enough
you will decrease the routers effective use of the available bandwidth.
Note this will NOT lower the delay. But it might approximate what
you're looking for.

2000-12-06 Thread Brian

I have a Cisco EtherSwitch 2200, which is basically the same thing as a
Catalyst 2901, but a different color. It runs the Catalyst 5000 OS, has
14 ports, and is great for Cisco study.

$1800

Brian

Off Topic - Ask Miss Manners - Protocol and Behaviour

2000-12-06 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Dear Miss Groupstudy Manners,

I have the privilege and good fortune of attending a meeting at which
someone who is recognized as one of the top people in the field, and author
of a well received book on the subject, will also be in attendance.

My question is this: is it considered rude, not to mention obsequious, to
whip out my copy of said person's book and ask for an autograph? Should this
be done during the introductions, at the first break, or out in the parking
lot?

Also, how do I keep from hurting myself nodding my head in agreement with
said guru?

Thanks.

Chuck

Cisco 7000 RP flash card

2000-12-06 Thread Barrett

I am looking at purchasing a flash card for my 7000 series router. In
researching compatable flash cards, I came across the following statement
from Cisco "All RP-specific flash cards must have a metal sleeve
installed." Does anyone have any information on this "metal sleeve". I
have never heard of it and Cisco does not explain it at all. I plan on
trying to find the flash card second-hand, so I need to know what to look
for.
Thanks, Barrett

Re: Passive vs. Active FTP

2000-12-06 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

With both active or passive mode, the client opens an FTP control
connection by sending a SYN to the FTP server, from an ephemeral port, to
the well-known FTP control port 21. The control connection is used for
sending commands, such as RETR or STOR. An ephemeral port is a port above
1023 that is not used for any well-known service. The OS temporarily
assigns an ephemeral port to an application.

With active mode, when the user requests data by asking for a file or
directory listing, the client sends a PORT command specifying an ephemeral
port for use in a data connection. The FTP server opens the data connection
by sending a SYN from port 20 to the ephemeral port that the client
specified in the PORT command. A lot of firewalls won't allow a session
establishment from an outside server, so this can cause problems.

With passive mode, the FTP client opens the data session. The server uses
the PORT command to specify an ephemeral port. The client opens the data
connection by sending a SYN from one of its own ephemeral ports to the
ephemeral port specified by the server. This works better with firewalls
usually, though I have run across cases where passive doesn't work because
the server side was running a personal firewall that wouldn't allow an
incoming session establishment to an ephemeral (not well-known) port number.

FTP is bad from a security point of view. Not only does it have this ugly
business with passive vs. active, but it also sends passwords in clear
text. It also includes the host's IP address in the PORT command which is
not such a good idea for security and can have problems when NAT is in use.
